More November Fun

Ah November. It’s one on my most favorite months of the year. Mostly because we’ve always got a lot going on this month and I think it’s a lot of fun!! ๐Ÿ˜

One of the reasons November is so much fun is because it’s my birthday month!!! Hahaha I was born exactly half way into November, on the 15th back in 1991. So I turned 27 this year. Yay!๐Ÿฅณ

Haha so my father-in-law always pick out weird/funny cards to send me for my birthday. Last year’s was a cat shooting lasers out of its eyes to light the candles on a birthday cake. Haha it’s still hanging up on my fridge actually. ๐Ÿ˜‚ I thought that one was gonna be hard to beat, but this year’s was a flying kitten with rainbows and stuff. It was great.

Anyway, Luke is the best and got me a believe Training journal. I’ve wanted one of these for a while and I’m really stoked about it! It’s so neat and full of all sorts of awesome stuff! I can’t wait to start using it!! Hahaha I’m gonna wait to start filling it out until December though.

Ugh it’s so pretty!!! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ Plus I finally found a good use for a bunch of the stickers that have come in my monthly StrideBoxes. I’ve had a huge stack of them just collecting in my drawer, but I thought this was a good place to put them. Along with a good ol Honey Stinger sticker and a fortune cookie fortune. ๐Ÿ˜

Luke also got me Chinese food for my birthday dinner, because that’s kind of a tradition for me. Even from when I was a little kid I always wanted Chinese food for my birthday. It was a great birthday dinner. ๐Ÿ˜Š No cake though. I’ve never been a big cake person. Hahaha when I was a kid my grandma used to make me giant batches of rice crispy treats instead of birthday cakes. I’ve also had cookie cakes, pies, cheesecake, and ice cream cakes (which is kinda weird for a November birthday ๐Ÿ˜‚), instead of normal cake. I wasn’t really feeling dessert this year though, which is weird for me. But I was really into the Chinese food.

Anyway, the day after my birthday I found out about a 5k/10k turkey trot on Thanksgiving Day that gives out while pumpkin pies to all of the finishers. So of course I signed up for the 5k. ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ I’ve never done a turkey trot until this year, and of course I’m an overachiever about it and have ended up doing two. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Well, signing up for two at this point. But there’s no way I’m not gonna finish a 3.1 mile turkey trot.

Anyway, while signing up I also bought a sweet turkey hat, to go along with my spiffy turkey trot Zensah compression socks, and Gobbler Grind hoodie. So I’m gonna be all turkey’d out for this race! Well, my hoodie doesn’t have a turkey on it, it just says “Gobbler Grind Marathon, Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k”. But I think it still counts. ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ˜Š

Not the best photo, but you get the point. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So yeah, I’m super duper excited about that! I’ve never done a turkey trot on Thanksgiving Day before because Luke and I usually travel to either Colorado or Illinois to be apart of one of our families Thanksgiving’s. But both of our dads work on Thanksgiving this year, so we decided to save some money and just stay home and do our own Thanksgiving.

We might end up doing something with my brother-in-law, his girlfriend, and her kids. But they always want us to come to their apartment and Luke and I aren’t to keen on that idea. We’re both crazy excited to be out of our apartment (for going on 4 years now ๐Ÿ˜) and we enjoy having more space that’s all our own. Plus they vape inside their apartment and I just can’t handle that. Those things destroy my lungs… And we have a backyard their dogs could run around in, but whatever. If they don’t want to come to our house we’ll probably just stay home and do our own thing.

Okey dokey, enough about Thanksgiving for now. I ran today!!! Hahaha I was very resigned to take at least a week off from running after my races last weekend and I mean, I kinda made it. ๐Ÿ˜‚ But oh man, my life is an absolute wreck when I don’t have running and the routine that it keeps me in. So I HAD to run today.

I only did 1 super easy mile, but apparently that was enough to get me back on track. Ever since I started my little break I’ve been eating like shit and sitting around being an absolute lazy and unproductive lump of a human being. Now, I’m a firm believer that sometimes doing things like that is necessary. But at this point I feel like I’ve gotten a bit out of hand with it. ๐Ÿ˜‚ But like I said, my super short run this morning helped. ๐Ÿ˜„

It’s pretty crazy how tired, lazy, and out of it NOT running can make a person feel! I know a break is necessary, but yesterday I felt like shit. That’s when I decided that I absolutely NEEDED to run. Even if it was only a super short 1 mile run. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Whew! Anyway, more photos from the Gobbler Grind Half were posted online last night. Of course I appreciate free race photos, but I’m really disappointed about how terrible the quality of all of the photos are. legit could have taken better pictures with my phone. In fact, my dad and I DID take better photos with our phones. They had legit photographs with DSLR cameras, so I’m not sure what happened here…

I mean, they aren’t awful. But I still feel like I could have handed someone my phone and ended up with a much better quality photo. oh well. At least they’re free!

But let’s just compare them to this photo taken at Longview. I cropped this one A LOT and it’s still a much better quality. Plus photos from Longview were free as well.

Anyways, that’s all for now. I hope everyone has a super Saturday!

Weekly Recap: September 10th-16th, 2018

Oh man, this week has been tough. I’ve been feeling kind of off all week and then on Sunday I woke up feeling sore everywhere for no real reason, tired, and sniffly. So I suppose that would explain it.

Unfortunately that means I didn’t run a lot this week. That might be for the best though, it I am sick or getting sick it’s probably better that I take things easy instead of pushing myself and stressing my system more. It’s just been kinda frustrating because I didn’t really know what was up until Sunday morning. So yeah, this week was a struggle, but at least now I have a pretty good idea as to why. Not exactly happy with how it went, running wise, but it happens. Hopefully I’ll feel better next week.

Monday:ย

  • 2 miles
  • 15 minutes of yoga

Had a shorter, slightly speedy run on the scheduled for Monday. I thought it was going to be an easier run but it turns out I was really wrong. This two mile run was harder than the 11 miles I did on Saturday. Running is weird like that somethings.

img_4757

Tuesday:

  • 3.1 miles

Things I regretted about this run; that I didn’t get out earlier and that I wore tights instead of shorts. Things I didn’t regret about this run; doing it.

Another rough run…The plan was 5 miles, but I cut it short. Obviously. Still pretty happy with what I got done though. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_4777

Wednesday:ย

  • 3 miles on the treadmill

I actually ended up sleeping in on Wednesday and really didn’t feel like going out, so I did this workout on the treadmill. Warmed up for a mile, ran at threshold pace for about a mile, and then cooled down for a mile. Kinda haha. There was about a 40 minute break between my threshold mile and cool down mile. My dad actually called me right as I was starting that last mile, so I hopped off the treadmill to talk to him. We haven’t really talked in a while so that was nice. Plus talking to my dad was definitely more important than running 3 consecutive miles. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So instead of a photo from Wednesday’s run here’s a photo of my dad and I hiking in Lory State Park from 2016. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_4953

Thursday:

  • rest day

Yeah, no. Just not feeling it…

img_4843

Friday:

Yay pumpkin picking!

So I didn’t run on Friday, but Luke and I were pretty busy! We got quite a bit done, along with going to a cider mill and picking some pumpkins. It was a lot of fun, and you can read more about it by clicking the link above!

Saturday:

  • 2.25 miles

Had no real intentions for Saturday. I just went out to see what I could do. Apparently the answer to to that was 2.25 miles. Not great considering my long runs are usually on Saturdays, but a little something is always better than nothing.

img_4916

Sunday:

  • ย rest day

Luke and I both woke up feeling sniffly and gross. Well, even more so than I’ve been feeling. So I spent the day resting, relaxing, and trying to recover from whatever bug I seem to have come down with. Hopefully I wont be feeling too badly for too long.

img_4950-1

Total Weekly Mileage: 10.47

Well that’s slightly embarrassing. But still better than nothing! Really hoping that next week goes better.

But for now, happy Sunday! I Hope everyone has a great week!

Weekly Recap: July 23rd-29th, 2018

The first week of training for Operation Two Half Marathons in Two Days is done!! I think it went really well and all-in-all it was a great way to kick off this training cycle! Now hopefully the next 15 weeks will go just as well. ๐Ÿ˜‰ We’ll just have to wait and see about that, but at this point I’m super stoked and motivated to be training and working towards a new goal! ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday:

  • 3 easy miles
  • 30 minutes of strength work

Started off the week with 3 easy miles, followed by 30 minutes of strength work! Right now I really want to focus on getting stronger! I think that’s going to be really important to help get me across both finish lines on November 10th and 11th and will hopefully help reduce my likely hood of getting injured. I feel like I’m going to need all of the help I can get in that department haha. But anyway, for the most part Monday’s run was good, but uneventful. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_3560

Tuesday:

  • 2 “steady” miles

In the past when my training plans have called for steady runs, I usually just ignore the steady part haha. I’m not very good at holding a steady pace. In fact, that’s probably one of my biggest weaknesses as a runner. But instead of ignoring that this time, I took my run onto the treadmill instead! Because as long as you don’t mess with the speed on the treadmill too much, it pretty much forces you to run at a steady pace haha. But the thing is, I usually do interval stuff on the treadmill because constantly changing up the pace helps fight off the boredom of running on a treadmill. But I did manage to make this run a steady one and hopefully got a little bit stronger mentally by sticking it out at one pace on the treadmill haha. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_3574

Wednesday:

  • 5 easy miles
  • 30 minutes of yoga

So on Tuesday night I went to Luke’s softball games and ended up staying up a little too late, so I wasn’t too thrilled about having to wake up early on Wednesday morning. Getting out of bed and eating breakfast was hard. Getting dressed and getting out of the door was hard. But once I managed that things got considerably more easy. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Then later in the afternoon I did a really nice yoga session. I didn’t realize how tight my body actually was until I got onto my yoga mat haha. But at least I did something about it and I ended up feeling pretty good afterward!

img_3593

Thursday:

  • rest day

Thursday was actually supposed to be another strength day, but I was sore and tired and kinda had a feeling that if I did do a workout that my run the next day wouldn’t go as well. So I ended up sleeping in a little bit, I got to slow down and really enjoy my breakfast that morning. Then I worked on some blog posts, cleaned up around the house a little bit, did a little more yoga in the afternoon, and spent the rest of my day reading and relaxing. ๐Ÿ™‚ There was a time when I would feel kind of guilty for not doing much of anything for a day, but rest is most definitely part of the program!! Not too long ago Alexi Pappas did a live stream on her Instagram account and said something to the affect of “days off are like allowing your body to marinate in you’re hard work”, and compared it to letting a steak marinate in the fridge for a day. For some reason that really got through to me and now I’m trying to take my off days more seriously and giving my training seep into my body a little bit more and not feel guilty that I “didn’t do anything that day” or didn’t hit my step goal or whatever.

img_3614

Friday:

  • 2 easy miles
  • about 10 minutes of strength work

My training plan called for a fartlek on Friday, but I didn’t really feel like doing a fartlek. That just didn’t sound like fun. So instead I just did a couple of easy miles. Noting fancy but it felt good! Followed that with a very very small amount of strength work, but I figure a little bit is better than nothing at all!

Then on Friday night we helped some friends move (more strength work? ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) and then went out to dinner with them. We ended up staying out later than we’d planned, but it was a good time. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_3660

Saturday:

  • 8 miles

Getting out of bed on Saturday morning was hard. It seems like no one in my life understands my need for sleep haha. I just don’t feel great if I don’t sleep for 8 hours a night. Luke thinks I’m just being a baby, but damn it I need to sleep! Haha anyway, I ended up getting up a little bit later that I would have liked, butย it was cloudy and in the 70’s today, so I wasn’t too worried about it. It did start warming up more towards the end of my run, but at least I didn’t end up having to run in 80 or 90 degrees. That would have sucked! But all in all it was a pretty decent run and I had a pretty decent time doing it. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_3692

Sunday:

  • rest day

Since Sunday was a day off of running I took all three dogs out for walks. One at a time though haha. If I take more than one at a time they gang up on me and will drag me around town, chasing every squirrel we see! So while walking the dogs I was also playing Pokemon Go. Mostly catching pokemon, but I also battled and took over a gym. Now this has been kind of an ongoing thing, but there’s this guy in my town who always goes around taking over the gyms. He’s super annoying and a higher level than pretty much everyone else in my town, so today I made it my mission in life to keep him out of the gym closest to my house. Every time he’d take it over, I’d go over there and take it back. 3 times I took that gym from him. It was great hahaha! Luke even helped me take over a few gyms from him when he got home from work, but my main objective was to keep that one from him and I feel I was very successful that that. So yeah, that’s how I spent most of my day. ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_3726

Total Weekly Mileage: 20.12

Not exactly where I wanted to be at this point in the year, but I’ll take it! I feel like I’m off to a pretty good start for my training! This week was a good one, but there’s still a lot more work to be done! I’m excited to see what I can get done next week and throughout this entire training cycle!

Your currently very motivated runner friend,

Half Marathon Training W1D3

Oh man, this morning was rough!

Luke plays softball on his company’s league on Tuesday’s. They’re always double headers and each game lasts about an hour. Which is no big deal. But last night his first game started at 8:30 pm, so we were at the softball fields until 10:30 and didn’t get to bed until well after 11 that night. That’s really not that big of an issue. I just turn into a big baby when I don’t get enough sleep, and I’m still getting up earlier than usual to beat the summer heat.

Plus I’m just feeling kinda worn out from my runs on Monday and Tuesday. But I knew that was coming and that this week would be kinda tough. I’m hoping if I just stick it out that next week will be better. It anyway, getting out of bed this morning was hard. Eating breakfast and getting dressed was hard. Stepping out the door and starting my Garmin was hard. But after that things got considerably easier. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The plan for today was 5 easy miles and that’s what I did! Nothing all too exciting to report from this run either, but honestly that’s not a bad thing! I’d rather have a decent, uneventful run, than a bad, exciting run haha. But this run did get my blood moving, my muscles working, and woke me up a little, which I definitely needed! So far this week I’ve felt tired before my runs and then awake and energized afterwards, so that’s been a nice little bonus. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh and during today’s run I notice that my legs are looking more and more like “runner’s” legs. They’re definitely getting slimmer, more muscle definition, and my quads are getting pretty big! I wish I would have thought to take a “before” photo of them, because obviously I can see the changes, but otherwise it’s kind of hard to know that anythings different. But I’ll definitely be saving the photo above so I’ll have something to compare to if I notice any more changes. I know I’ve been getting stronger, but I just think it’s cool to actually be able toย see the physical changes in my body. For many years I was very focused on just losing weight and nothing else. I didn’t care how strong I was, that I could run a half marathon, or that my body was capable of all sorts of amazing things. Now I’m not all too concerned about what the scale says and am more exciting to see and feel that I’m getting stronger, more capable, and hopefully more injury resistant haha. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyway, who else runs for second breakfast?!? I know I sure do!! It’s like, 90% of the reason why I’m willing to wake up early and go run. #breakfastfoodisthebestfood ๐Ÿ˜‰ Basically I’m just a hobbit. I’m always eating haha. I mean, I legit eat two breakfasts on most day’s that I run and its great. I usually also always have food on me. Last night before Luke’s softball games I was kind of upset that I had forgotten to wash my grapes earlier in the day, so the only snack I had out there at the softball fields for like 2 hours was a banana. That was a bummer and I was pretty hungry by the time we got home. And it’s not like I didn’t have a filling dinner or anything. I’m just always hungry. ๐Ÿ˜‚

So after I was satisfied with my second breakfast I took Lily for a short little walk, watered the garden and picked some more tomatoes, along with a little watermelon. Then I did some laundry, loaded, ran, and unloaded the dishwasher, vacuumed and just picked up the house in general, and then finally showered, ate lunch, and then sat down to work on a few blog posts.

Later in the afternoon I did about 30 minutes of yoga, and holy cow I didn’t realize how tight I was until I did! Haha it was pretty bad! But at least I took the time to do something about it and I ended up feeling pretty great afterwards so yay for that! ๐Ÿ™‚ After that I just kinda spent the rest of the afternoon hanging out and waiting for Luke to get home from work. He should be home in about half an hour and we might go out hunting for Pokemon when he does. ๐Ÿ˜‰

But that’s all for now! I feel like I’ve had a very successful day half marathon training, but I’m pretty darn excited that tomorrow is a cross training day so I don’t have to get up early to run haha.

Happy hump day!!

Weekly Recap: June 25th-July 1st, 2018

This week I’ve been insanely grateful for my new treadmill! It’s been another hot one here in Kansas; with a few thunderstorms, high humidity, and air quality warnings. So definitely not ideal running weather haha. I did manage to get out and do some outdoor running, but most of it was done on the treadmill this week. But with heat indexes around 105 degrees, there was no way I was going to be able to do much outside. So thank goodness for my treadmill! Because of it I was still able to get my running done this week! ๐Ÿ™‚

img_2793

This was just from Tuesday! Both alerts ended up getting extended!

Monday:ย

  • 3 miles

It was actually relatively cool on Monday! I wasn’t about to waste that, so I hit the road that morning. We had some thunderstorms come through and even more that were nearby and that left the temperatures in the high 60’s in the morning. Not bad for late June!! The only downside was that those storms made it pretty darn humid! But I mean, it is summertime in the Midwest. It’s ALWAYS humid this time of year haha.

img_2767

Tuesday:ย

  • 2 miles
  • 30 minutes strength training
  • 10 minutes stretching

71 degrees + 90% humidity = the poor man’s altitude training. Haha seriously! Summer running is no freaking joke and it actually does help your body create more red blood cells, similar to the way altitude training does! And knowing this, I decided to take this run outside as well. I kinda didn’t want to haha, but I figured it was so short there was really no reason for me not to. I was completely drenched in sweat by the time I was done though!!

Followed up my run with some strength training. My current goal is to get stronger and hopefully a little more injury resistant since I’m going to be running two half marathons in two days this November, so I’ve been fitting in a couple of strength sessions every week. Haha I can already see the difference in my tiny little biceps! Now that being said, my heals have been kinda hurting me. I know exactly why too, like, two weeks ago I think, I ran too far in a pair of shoes that were too worn out…oops. I had a similar problem when I had first started running by wearing a pair of shoes that were too supportive for my feet. So I’ve been working on getting my feet back to feeling well. Lots of calf and foot stretching, along with ice, and rolling my feet with one of those little massage ball things. Last time I had this issue it lasted a while. Hopefully that wont be the case this time, but we shall see.

img_2783

Wednesday:

  • 7 treadmill miles
  • 10 minutes stretching

Holy cow! I feel like this run was more exhausting on the treadmill that it would have been on the road! My goal was actually 8 miles but once I got to 7 I just couldn’t spend another minute on my treadmill. I like it, it’s a really nice treadmill, and I’m extremely grateful to have it because getting in 7 miles on Wednesday probably wouldn’t have happened. All day I was getting air quality alerts and excessive heat warning on my phone haha. But jeez louise running on the treadmill is hard! Like, I’m actually going slower, but it feels harder. I’m just awkward and not good at running on treadmills, I guess. I also felt kinda dizzy getting off the treadmill. Probably because I was moving, but not really moving, ya feel me? Oh and treadmill running is hopelessly boring. Watching Hulu helped, but still. Haha anyway, this was the longest run I’ve ever done on a treadmill and I was very glad to be done with it!

img_2802

Also, my latest Honey Stinger order came on Wednesday!! Since training for my half marathons on November 10th and 11th (yup, two halfโ€™s in two days. Thatโ€™s slightly terrifying and a potentially bad decision on my part! I still haven’t gotten over that yet.ย ๐Ÿคฃ) officially starts on July 22nd, so I figured now would be a good time to top off my Honey Stinger supply!! The sick new hat and Hive stickers were an added bonus that were just too good to pass up! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿ˜„ย I’ve already put on of the stickers on my laptop. Now I just need to figure out what I want to do with the other 4 haha.

img_2808

Thursday:

  • 2 miles

The excessive heat warning continues with no end in sight… So on Thursday my run was done on the treadmill again. It was slow and unpleasant, but at least it got done. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_2830

Friday:

  • Rest Day
  • 40 minutes stretching

And a much needed one too! This heat just wears me out!! I did some stretching though and felt pretty good after that! ๐Ÿ˜„

Saturday:

  • 3.5 morning miles
  • 2 afternoon miles

Saturday was yet another hot and humid day. Iย really didn’t want to run on the treadmill that morning though, so I decided to just take my run outside and see how far I could go until I felt like I was going to die. Apparently 3.5 miles was my limit haha. It felt good to get outside and run on the road though! ๐Ÿ™‚ Then a little later that afternoon I figured why not got for a total of 5 miles for the day and ended up running 2 miles on the treadmill, which obviously got me to 5.5 miles for the day. ๐Ÿ™‚

Sunday:ย

  • Rest Day

Yesterday I was kinda thinking that I could run a mile or two to get my weekly mileage up over 20, but I got a little bit wine drunk last night and didn’t really feel like running today. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย Not like that’s a big deal or anything. Sunday’s are usually a rest day for me anyway, and since half marathon training starts later this month I might as well start getting into the habit of doing certain things on certain days. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So I didn’t run today, but I did do some walking. Last night in my slightly drunken state (haha I drank almost 2 bottles of wine, slightly may be a bit of an understatement. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) I decided that I was going to start playing Pokemon Go again. So at midnight, slightly drunk, and all alone (because Luke was too busy playing Call Of Duty with his dad and brother), I walked like, 2 blocks to the civics center to hit a few Pokestops. And since I did that I decided I really wanted to start playing Pokemon Go again, so that’s what I’ve done today. Walked dogs and played Pokemon Go haha. It’s been kinda fun though. ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_2890-1

Total Weekly Mileage: 19.55ย

Not bad considering the terrible weather!! This kinda stuff usually puts a damper on my running, but thanks to my treadmill I’ve still been able to get some miles in! ๐Ÿ™‚ Hopefully the weather will be a little better next week, but as of right now it doesn’t look like this heat is going to be letting up…

But anyway, happy first day of July!! I hope everyone has a safe and fun 4th of July!! We’ve currently got a few things planned so that should be exciting!

But that’s all for now!

Until next time,

~Ashley

Treadmill Running

I started out my running journey almost 5 years ago on a treadmill in my old apartment complexes fitness center, but once I started running on the paved trail that was near by, I ditched the treadmill and never looked back. In that time I’ve forgotten a little something about myself; I’m super duper awkward on treadmills!

So just going back a little bit, last weekend Luke and I went to Illinois for one of his brother’s high school graduation party. While we were there we picked up my sister’s old treadmill from her boyfriend’s mom’s house. My sister (actually, both of my sister’s, my brother, and both of my parents) live in Colorado now. It would have been more expensive for her to rent a truck and drive all the way to Illinois just to get it, and since she knew Luke just recently bought a new truck, she told me that we could take it. And that, my friends, is how I ended up getting a $600 treadmill for free. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_2642

Originally I wasn’t going to take the treadmill. “I’m a road runner!” I told myself, “I pride myself in running in ALL OF THE WEATHER CONDITIONS!” And that is true, but in the summer months I always end up runningย a lot less and basically not doing any kind of speed work, because I do not do well in the heat. It absolutely drains me and my running kinda suffers because of it. So after thinking about that for a while, I figured why not take the treadmill? I could probably utilize it in a way to supplement my outdoor running and actually do some speed work in the summer! So at this point I’m pretty stoked to have it. Even though it’s kinda huge and taking up a lot of room in my living room haha.

Anyway, back to my original point. I run weird on treadmills. And I’ve kinda forgotten about that little fact until now. Once I had started running on that trail back in the apartment days I realized how natural treadmill running felt to me. I also realized how quickly I tore shoes up while running on a treadmill. Once I started running on asphalt my shoes started lasting me a lot longer. Probably because running on a revolving belt is just naturally going to wear them out faster, but also because my running gait is just super awkward while moving on said revolving belt and I’ve never been able to get into a good rhythm on one. And honestly I probably never will.

So I’ve only run twice since Sunday when we brought this thing home. Both runs were on the treadmill and both runs felt super weird. Now, I know I’m slow, but a little simple math told me that my Garmin wasn’t reading correctly with that first run on Monday and that I was going somewhere around a 13:30 pace and not a 15 minute per mile pace. Haha that was a huge relief! Because that first run felt HARD! So I’m not actually sure about the distance on this run. I’m not all that worried about it though, I figured out how to calibrate my watch to the treadmill and it was pretty close to what the treadmill was reading on Tuesday. Still not sure how accurate the treadmill is, but I’m just gonna roll with it haha.

img_2651

First treadmill run in a very long time on Monday!

You might notice in the photo above that I’m not wearing any shoes. Haha remember how I said I tear shoes up while running on the treadmill? Yeah, I don’t want to be doing that right now. You see, I’m down to one pair of running shoes (I just had to retire my current pair of Nike Free’s. It was a sad day), my Nike Pegasus and they’re getting close to being halfway through their running life with me. I can usually get about 300 ish miles out of a pair of shoes before they have to retire to my “everyday” shoes, and then I can usually wear them for about another year before I have to get rid of them. It’s a good system for me. ๐Ÿ™‚ But anyway, since I’m down to one pair of running shoes and currently not able to spend $100 to get a new pair (that whole trip to Illinois, our up coming family vacation that Luke’s mom has been planning, and having to pay bills, buy food, and other adult stuff like that is really slowing the whole getting new running shoes thing down). So in order to preserve my current pair of shoes I’ve done both of my runs this week in my socks!!

(Just a little side note here guys, I have a ko-fi account now! You might have notice the “Buy Me A Coffee” button on the side of my blog. I actually spent a lot of time thinking about whether or not I should join ko-fi, because I didn’t want anyone to think I was like, begging for money or anything. And I’m totally not! But you know, I do work pretty hard on this blog and my other social media accounts. I put myself out there and share my story in some pretty up close and personal ways. So I figured why not give people a way to show me some love and support in the small way of “buying me a coffee” if they want to. And if they don’t, no big deal and no hard feelings. It’s not like I started this blog to make boatloads of money. Although I’d be lying if I said that wouldn’t be nice. ๐Ÿ˜‰ But anyway, just thought I’d throw that out there really quick. I probably wont be bringing it up much though.)

So anyway, in order to preserve the life of my remaining pair of running shoes, I’ve done both of my runs this week in just my socks. I figured it wouldn’t be that big of a deal though. As kids my sisters and I would run around the farm barefoot all the time. We’d walk around corn fields, cow pastures, the woods, our gravel driveway, and even ride our bikes all sans shoes, and it was great!! And it’s not like I wear shoes all the time anyway. Nowadays I always walk around my house in just socks. I ride my stationary bike barefoot, tend to my garden barefoot or in flip flops or rubber boots (so, shoes that basically have no support whatsoever). I’ve even played tennis and helped Luke practice for softball either barefoot or in socks. Haha we’ve actually discoverd that I pitch better without shoes on! Although that’s probably just a weird coincidence, but now whenever we got out to the softball fields and there’s no home plate out we just use my shoes because I’m a-ok with not wearing them haha.

P.S. I’m totally in love with my Zensah watermelon compression socks!!ย ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿ˜„[/[/[/[/[/[/

I’ve also got an affinity for minimalist shoes. Hence why I love Nike Free’s so much. Don’t get me wrong, I love myย Pegasus. They’re a great training shoe and a good way for me to switch things up a little bit, but I wont do races in them haha. Compared to the Free’s they just feel heavy to me. I don’t even like wearing them on long runs, but I do because I know it’s good for me. But anyway, since I’m quite often barefoot, or wearing socks or minimalist shoes, I figured my feet, ankles, and legs would be strong enough to do my treadmill running in just my socks. But I think I might have overdone it a bit yesterday. I ran 4 miles on the treadmill, very awkwardly because like I said, treadmill running is weird and hard, in just my socks. I’m not hurt or injured or anything, but my calves are just super tight today! My guess is from running super duper awkwardly on the treadmill two days in a row and now wearing shoes probably didn’t help.

Haha yesterday I actually spent those 4 miles watching part of a full Green Day concert on YouTube. I have no idea how people can go to a concert and record the whole thing! I’m too busy singing and dancing to even consider taking decent pictures, let along record a video! But I am incredibly grateful to the people who do! Haha yesterday’s 4 miles flew by thanks to whoever recorded this concert! I find treadmill running to be incredibly boring, so I never thought I’d say treadmill miles just flew by! So that was really nice!! But like I said, I woke up with super tight calves today, so I figured I needed to rest them and stretch them, so that’s been my goal for today.

I actually wanted to run outside today. The weather has been a little less hot thanks to some rain we have in the forecast, so it would have been nice to take it outside today. But my tight calves are making my heels hurt a little bit. I’ve dealt with plantarย fasciitis before (and ironically I got it from running in a pair of shoes that were waaay to supportive for my feet. I have very high arches and I’ve found the less support a shoe has, the better!) and I definitely didn’t want to go through all of that again, so I figured taking the day off and getting my calves to loosen up a bit was obviously the better option. So I spent about 30 minutes on my yoga mat doing just that. I still felt a little tight, but a lot better after that!

So I’m hoping tomorrow they feel even better and I’ll be able to run on them. The weather forecast is saying that it’s supposed to be in the 60’s and cloudy with a chance of rain, so I’d like to run in that before it starts getting hot and gross again!! But once it does, at least I’ll have the treadmill as an option. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve also got another dentist appointment tomorrow to get my permanent crowns put on. So hopefully that all goes well. But that is all I’ve got for now, so happy hump day everyone!

Will (and did) Run For Pizza, Tomatoes, Zucchini, and Green Beans, Oh My! And One More Week Until Running With The Cows! ๐Ÿฎ

Ya know, I don’t think that title is long enough. I feel like I could have done a lot better. I mean, why not just write the whole blog post in the title? Problem solved! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Haha obviously coming up with catchy titles is not my strong suit, but whatever, I make it work. I think…

Anyway, Luke and I have officially got our garden started! Last year we had to rent a tiller because ours had broken and neither of us knew how to fix it and we kinda didn’t want to mess with it anyway. But yesterday we bought a new one because it was on sale at Tractor Supply, and because why not? ๐Ÿ˜‰ So once we had that we were pretty much set on everything else, so we went to a local farm to get our plants.

I think the very first year that we lived in this house we started most of our plants from seeds, but that’s a lot of extra work haha! Plus I really like this farm we get ours from. Everything there is organic, non GMO, and the plants always look really good and do well, so that’s where we’ve been getting and will probably continue getting our plants. This year we ended up getting 16 tomato plants (8 “Jet Star” plants and 6 cherry tomato plants), 4 zucchini plants, 4 banana pepper plants, 4 watermelon plants, 2 green bean plants, another strawberry plant, 1 black berry bush, 1 raspberry bush, and a goji berry bush. We also wanted a few cucumber plants but they didn’t have any so we’ll have to get those somewhere else and hopefully really soon!

So now that we were armed with our new tiller and most of the plants that we wanted, Luke recruited his brother and his whole crew to come “help” us put in the plants. Originally he just wanted him there because Luke wanted to build some structures for all of the vine plants, but we didn’t end up getting to that last night. We did, however, get some tilling done and the tomatoes, peppers, and berry bushes planted! I even had 3 kids (my brother-in-law’s girlfriend’s kids and my next door neighbor) fighting over who got to dig the next hole for me haha. That was pretty funny but it also kinda made the whole process take a little longer. Oh well, at least they had fun and we got some of our plants into the ground.

During all of those shenanigans Luke had ordered pizza, and while I was eating I realized I was wearing a very fitting shirt haha! And I mean, it is very true, I will definitely run for pizza! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Actually, what I really like to do is have pizza for dinner the night before my long run, because it always seems like when I do my long runs go soo much better haha. Still not sure if that’s just a coincidence or not, buy hey, I’ll gladly say its true if it means I get to eat more pizza. ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ˜‰ And at that point I was thinking that ended up working out really well for me, because I’d planned on doing a long run today.

img_1471

That didn’t exactly end up happening though. When I woke up this morning my calves were crazy sore. Not sure how I managed that one, but they were. Plus I was feeling kinda tired. I guess that’s not very surprising considering all of our gardening adventures last night. But I told myself I was gonna try for 8 miles anyway. And foolishly thought to myself that hey, maybe it’ll go really well and I can do 10. I did not do 10…

I felt alright during the first 3 ish miles, but by the time I got to 5 I was just absolutely done. The sun was all the way up at that point and I had started to heat up even more than I already was which sucks. Being hot is like, my least favorite thing ever, and it kinda turns me into a huge baby. But I stuck it out through another mile and a half before I just called it quits. Ooooh man it was really hard. But I’m happy with the 6.5 miles I got done. ๐Ÿ™‚

Honestly I’m thinking it’s not a bad thing that I didn’t run 10 miles today. My next 5k is next Saturday and obviously I want to good and have fresh legs for that! And I mean, I’m pretty freaking stoked for this race! I did it once before in 2016 and it was so much fun! There were goats and a baby cow at the start/finish line, the course was pretty, rural, and full of cows, and there was a HUGE buffet at the end. Seriously, there was SO. MUCH. FOOD. It’s definitely my kind of race! And maybe one day I’ll end up running the half instead of the 5k haha. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Originally I was doing a 5k specific training plan for this race, but that kinda went to the wayside once I made the potentially bad decision to run two half marathons in two days. Haha I’m running the Longview half on November 10th and on November 11th my dad, brother, and I are going to do the Gobbler Grind half marathon so that should be interesting. But the second my dad signed us up for the Gobbler Grind I pretty much stopped everything I was doing and started focusing on milesย miles miles. I really need to start getting more in now that I’m attempting the crazy stunt, so I’ve been focusing on upping my mileage and have pretty much stopped doing speed work. Although I have thrown in a few short and fast sessions in over the last few weeks, just for fun. ๐Ÿ™‚

But anyway, I haven’t completely given up on the time goal I had for Running With the Cows though. Depending what kind of weather we get on race day (have I mentioned how big of a baby I am when it comes to hot/sunny weather? ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) and how I’m feeling next Saturday, I think I might actually be able to do pretty well! I mean, my dad and I crushed it at the Whiskey 5k we did together in March and I kinda want to see if I can do this race faster. But I guess I’ll just have to wait and see what race day brings! I’m pretty excited for it! But I’m even more excited about the buffet at the end. I’m definitely gonna go all out on that. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰

Okey dokey then! I just kinda wanted to give a little update on what I’ve been up to and to say how stoked I am about Running With The Cows next week! So that is all for today!

Happy Saturday from me and this chubby bunny!
