Treadmill Running

I started out my running journey almost 5 years ago on a treadmill in my old apartment complexes fitness center, but once I started running on the paved trail that was near by, I ditched the treadmill and never looked back. In that time I’ve forgotten a little something about myself; I’m super duper awkward on treadmills!

So just going back a little bit, last weekend Luke and I went to Illinois for one of his brother’s high school graduation party. While we were there we picked up my sister’s old treadmill from her boyfriend’s mom’s house. My sister (actually, both of my sister’s, my brother, and both of my parents) live in Colorado now. It would have been more expensive for her to rent a truck and drive all the way to Illinois just to get it, and since she knew Luke just recently bought a new truck, she told me that we could take it. And that, my friends, is how I ended up getting a $600 treadmill for free. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_2642

Originally I wasn’t going to take the treadmill. “I’m a road runner!” I told myself, “I pride myself in running in ALL OF THE WEATHER CONDITIONS!” And that is true, but in the summer months I always end up runningย a lot less and basically not doing any kind of speed work, because I do not do well in the heat. It absolutely drains me and my running kinda suffers because of it. So after thinking about that for a while, I figured why not take the treadmill? I could probably utilize it in a way to supplement my outdoor running and actually do some speed work in the summer! So at this point I’m pretty stoked to have it. Even though it’s kinda huge and taking up a lot of room in my living room haha.

Anyway, back to my original point. I run weird on treadmills. And I’ve kinda forgotten about that little fact until now. Once I had started running on that trail back in the apartment days I realized how natural treadmill running felt to me. I also realized how quickly I tore shoes up while running on a treadmill. Once I started running on asphalt my shoes started lasting me a lot longer. Probably because running on a revolving belt is just naturally going to wear them out faster, but also because my running gait is just super awkward while moving on said revolving belt and I’ve never been able to get into a good rhythm on one. And honestly I probably never will.

So I’ve only run twice since Sunday when we brought this thing home. Both runs were on the treadmill and both runs felt super weird. Now, I know I’m slow, but a little simple math told me that my Garmin wasn’t reading correctly with that first run on Monday and that I was going somewhere around a 13:30 pace and not a 15 minute per mile pace. Haha that was a huge relief! Because that first run felt HARD! So I’m not actually sure about the distance on this run. I’m not all that worried about it though, I figured out how to calibrate my watch to the treadmill and it was pretty close to what the treadmill was reading on Tuesday. Still not sure how accurate the treadmill is, but I’m just gonna roll with it haha.

img_2651

First treadmill run in a very long time on Monday!

You might notice in the photo above that I’m not wearing any shoes. Haha remember how I said I tear shoes up while running on the treadmill? Yeah, I don’t want to be doing that right now. You see, I’m down to one pair of running shoes (I just had to retire my current pair of Nike Free’s. It was a sad day), my Nike Pegasus and they’re getting close to being halfway through their running life with me. I can usually get about 300 ish miles out of a pair of shoes before they have to retire to my “everyday” shoes, and then I can usually wear them for about another year before I have to get rid of them. It’s a good system for me. ๐Ÿ™‚ But anyway, since I’m down to one pair of running shoes and currently not able to spend $100 to get a new pair (that whole trip to Illinois, our up coming family vacation that Luke’s mom has been planning, and having to pay bills, buy food, and other adult stuff like that is really slowing the whole getting new running shoes thing down). So in order to preserve my current pair of shoes I’ve done both of my runs this week in my socks!!

(Just a little side note here guys, I have a ko-fi account now! You might have notice the “Buy Me A Coffee” button on the side of my blog. I actually spent a lot of time thinking about whether or not I should join ko-fi, because I didn’t want anyone to think I was like, begging for money or anything. And I’m totally not! But you know, I do work pretty hard on this blog and my other social media accounts. I put myself out there and share my story in some pretty up close and personal ways. So I figured why not give people a way to show me some love and support in the small way of “buying me a coffee” if they want to. And if they don’t, no big deal and no hard feelings. It’s not like I started this blog to make boatloads of money. Although I’d be lying if I said that wouldn’t be nice. ๐Ÿ˜‰ But anyway, just thought I’d throw that out there really quick. I probably wont be bringing it up much though.)

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

So anyway, in order to preserve the life of my remaining pair of running shoes, I’ve done both of my runs this week in just my socks. I figured it wouldn’t be that big of a deal though. As kids my sisters and I would run around the farm barefoot all the time. We’d walk around corn fields, cow pastures, the woods, our gravel driveway, and even ride our bikes all sans shoes, and it was great!! And it’s not like I wear shoes all the time anyway. Nowadays I always walk around my house in just socks. I ride my stationary bike barefoot, tend to my garden barefoot or in flip flops or rubber boots (so, shoes that basically have no support whatsoever). I’ve even played tennis and helped Luke practice for softball either barefoot or in socks. Haha we’ve actually discoverd that I pitch better without shoes on! Although that’s probably just a weird coincidence, but now whenever we got out to the softball fields and there’s no home plate out we just use my shoes because I’m a-ok with not wearing them haha.

img_2452

P.S. I’m totally in love with my Zensah watermelon compression socks!!ย ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿ˜„[/[/[/[/[/[/

I’ve also got an affinity for minimalist shoes. Hence why I love Nike Free’s so much. Don’t get me wrong, I love myย Pegasus. They’re a great training shoe and a good way for me to switch things up a little bit, but I wont do races in them haha. Compared to the Free’s they just feel heavy to me. I don’t even like wearing them on long runs, but I do because I know it’s good for me. But anyway, since I’m quite often barefoot, or wearing socks or minimalist shoes, I figured my feet, ankles, and legs would be strong enough to do my treadmill running in just my socks. But I think I might have overdone it a bit yesterday. I ran 4 miles on the treadmill, very awkwardly because like I said, treadmill running is weird and hard, in just my socks. I’m not hurt or injured or anything, but my calves are just super tight today! My guess is from running super duper awkwardly on the treadmill two days in a row and now wearing shoes probably didn’t help.

img_2684

Haha yesterday I actually spent those 4 miles watching part of a full Green Day concert on YouTube. I have no idea how people can go to a concert and record the whole thing! I’m too busy singing and dancing to even consider taking decent pictures, let along record a video! But I am incredibly grateful to the people who do! Haha yesterday’s 4 miles flew by thanks to whoever recorded this concert! I find treadmill running to be incredibly boring, so I never thought I’d say treadmill miles just flew by! So that was really nice!! But like I said, I woke up with super tight calves today, so I figured I needed to rest them and stretch them, so that’s been my goal for today.

I actually wanted to run outside today. The weather has been a little less hot thanks to some rain we have in the forecast, so it would have been nice to take it outside today. But my tight calves are making my heels hurt a little bit. I’ve dealt with plantarย fasciitis before (and ironically I got it from running in a pair of shoes that were waaay to supportive for my feet. I have very high arches and I’ve found the less support a shoe has, the better!) and I definitely didn’t want to go through all of that again, so I figured taking the day off and getting my calves to loosen up a bit was obviously the better option. So I spent about 30 minutes on my yoga mat doing just that. I still felt a little tight, but a lot better after that!

img_2690

So I’m hoping tomorrow they feel even better and I’ll be able to run on them. The weather forecast is saying that it’s supposed to be in the 60’s and cloudy with a chance of rain, so I’d like to run in that before it starts getting hot and gross again!! But once it does, at least I’ll have the treadmill as an option. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve also got another dentist appointment tomorrow to get my permanent crowns put on. So hopefully that all goes well. But that is all I’ve got for now, so happy hump day everyone!

Will (and did) Run For Pizza, Tomatoes, Zucchini, and Green Beans, Oh My! And One More Week Until Running With The Cows! ๐Ÿฎ

Ya know, I don’t think that title is long enough. I feel like I could have done a lot better. I mean, why not just write the whole blog post in the title? Problem solved! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Haha obviously coming up with catchy titles is not my strong suit, but whatever, I make it work. I think…

Anyway, Luke and I have officially got our garden started! Last year we had to rent a tiller because ours had broken and neither of us knew how to fix it and we kinda didn’t want to mess with it anyway. But yesterday we bought a new one because it was on sale at Tractor Supply, and because why not? ๐Ÿ˜‰ So once we had that we were pretty much set on everything else, so we went to a local farm to get our plants.

I think the very first year that we lived in this house we started most of our plants from seeds, but that’s a lot of extra work haha! Plus I really like this farm we get ours from. Everything there is organic, non GMO, and the plants always look really good and do well, so that’s where we’ve been getting and will probably continue getting our plants. This year we ended up getting 16 tomato plants (8 “Jet Star” plants and 6 cherry tomato plants), 4 zucchini plants, 4 banana pepper plants, 4 watermelon plants, 2 green bean plants, another strawberry plant, 1 black berry bush, 1 raspberry bush, and a goji berry bush. We also wanted a few cucumber plants but they didn’t have any so we’ll have to get those somewhere else and hopefully really soon!

img_1461

So now that we were armed with our new tiller and most of the plants that we wanted, Luke recruited his brother and his whole crew to come “help” us put in the plants. Originally he just wanted him there because Luke wanted to build some structures for all of the vine plants, but we didn’t end up getting to that last night. We did, however, get some tilling done and the tomatoes, peppers, and berry bushes planted! I even had 3 kids (my brother-in-law’s girlfriend’s kids and my next door neighbor) fighting over who got to dig the next hole for me haha. That was pretty funny but it also kinda made the whole process take a little longer. Oh well, at least they had fun and we got some of our plants into the ground.

img_1468-1

During all of those shenanigans Luke had ordered pizza, and while I was eating I realized I was wearing a very fitting shirt haha! And I mean, it is very true, I will definitely run for pizza! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Actually, what I really like to do is have pizza for dinner the night before my long run, because it always seems like when I do my long runs go soo much better haha. Still not sure if that’s just a coincidence or not, buy hey, I’ll gladly say its true if it means I get to eat more pizza. ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ˜‰ And at that point I was thinking that ended up working out really well for me, because I’d planned on doing a long run today.

img_1471

That didn’t exactly end up happening though. When I woke up this morning my calves were crazy sore. Not sure how I managed that one, but they were. Plus I was feeling kinda tired. I guess that’s not very surprising considering all of our gardening adventures last night. But I told myself I was gonna try for 8 miles anyway. And foolishly thought to myself that hey, maybe it’ll go really well and I can do 10. I did not do 10…

I felt alright during the first 3 ish miles, but by the time I got to 5 I was just absolutely done. The sun was all the way up at that point and I had started to heat up even more than I already was which sucks. Being hot is like, my least favorite thing ever, and it kinda turns me into a huge baby. But I stuck it out through another mile and a half before I just called it quits. Ooooh man it was really hard. But I’m happy with the 6.5 miles I got done. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_1480

Fueled by Honey Stinger.๐Ÿ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿซ Feet kept happy by Zensah. ๐Ÿงฆ๐Ÿ‰

Honestly I’m thinking it’s not a bad thing that I didn’t run 10 miles today. My next 5k is next Saturday and obviously I want to good and have fresh legs for that! And I mean, I’m pretty freaking stoked for this race! I did it once before in 2016 and it was so much fun! There were goats and a baby cow at the start/finish line, the course was pretty, rural, and full of cows, and there was a HUGE buffet at the end. Seriously, there was SO. MUCH. FOOD. It’s definitely my kind of race! And maybe one day I’ll end up running the half instead of the 5k haha. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Originally I was doing a 5k specific training plan for this race, but that kinda went to the wayside once I made the potentially bad decision to run two half marathons in two days. Haha I’m running the Longview half on November 10th and on November 11th my dad, brother, and I are going to do the Gobbler Grind half marathon so that should be interesting. But the second my dad signed us up for the Gobbler Grind I pretty much stopped everything I was doing and started focusing on milesย miles miles. I really need to start getting more in now that I’m attempting the crazy stunt, so I’ve been focusing on upping my mileage and have pretty much stopped doing speed work. Although I have thrown in a few short and fast sessions in over the last few weeks, just for fun. ๐Ÿ™‚

But anyway, I haven’t completely given up on the time goal I had for Running With the Cows though. Depending what kind of weather we get on race day (have I mentioned how big of a baby I am when it comes to hot/sunny weather? ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) and how I’m feeling next Saturday, I think I might actually be able to do pretty well! I mean, my dad and I crushed it at the Whiskey 5k we did together in March and I kinda want to see if I can do this race faster. But I guess I’ll just have to wait and see what race day brings! I’m pretty excited for it! But I’m even more excited about the buffet at the end. I’m definitely gonna go all out on that. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰

Okey dokey then! I just kinda wanted to give a little update on what I’ve been up to and to say how stoked I am about Running With The Cows next week! So that is all for today!

Happy Saturday from me and this chubby bunny!

Weekly Recap: April 2nd-8th, 2018

I managed to impress myself this week! I did pretty good running-wise, considering we weren’t home for most of Monday and had a hand injury that kinda slowed me down earlier in the week, but I still got a decent amount of running done! ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks to that hand injury I didn’t really get any strength work or stretching done. I just haven’t been able to use it very much and that makes doing most things more difficult. Still though, I’m happy with how this week went.

Monday:

Monday was an interesting day! It was our last day in Illinois so we squeezed in quite a few things before we had to go home! Luke, two of his brother’s, me, and my brother spent a lot of time doing all sorts of fun things together, before we had to start heading back home. I talk about all of that stuff here, if you’re interested.

Tuesday:

  • Rest Day

After all of the excitement on Monday I needed a rest day! So I took one. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I spent most of Tuesday drinking water because I was feeling dehydrate, resting, and tending to my hand. Haha on Monday I got bit by a dog. It wasn’t that big of a deal, but my hand was sore, swollen, and I pretty much couldn’t do anything with it.

Wednesday:ย

  • 2.5 miles easy miles

Yay! I finally got to wear my super spiffy new Zensah compression socks!! Haha they were actually delivered on Monday, but obviously I didn’t do any running until Wednesday. ๐Ÿ˜‰ It’s not really feeling much like spring anymore, here in Kansas. It was pretty cold on Wednesday. But I’m already looking forward to all of the watermelon that will be devoured this summer! So obviously I needed socks to represent that haha.

img_0768-1

Thursday:

  • 3 miles

Thursday ended up being the one warm day this week. In the afternoon it ended up being in the 60’s! It was kinda nice running in the warm sunny weather, but I still prefer the cold. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Anyway, I’m hoping my peach tree hold up during this wacky weather! It’s getting ready to bloom and I really want to get some peaches this year!!

img_0787-2

Friday:

  • 2.27 miles

Another chilly day on Friday. I wasn’t complaining though. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyway, Iโ€™ve been reading Jeff Gallowayโ€™s book โ€œThe Run Walk Run Methodโ€, so on Friday I decided to try out the cadence drill in thatโ€™s in this book, because oh man, my cadence could use all the help it can get! I did modify it a little bit though, since I was doing it on its own instead of as a warm up for a speed workout (as the book suggests you can do this drill for). So I warmed up with a mile of easy running instead of 10 minutes (Iโ€™m slow. Itโ€™s a fact.) and did 10 reps instead of the recommended 3-7 lol. And then did another 1/2 a mile of easy running for a cool down. But like I said, Iโ€™m slow and I wanted to hit at least 2 miles today, so mission accomplished on that front! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜„ It was a fun little drill sequence though! And Iโ€™ll probably end up using the actual recommendations as a warm up for a speed session every once in a while. ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Also, this was my lunch, and it was delicious as always. ๐Ÿž๐Ÿฅ‘๐Ÿ…๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ˜‹

Saturday:

  • 8 miles

You know how not all runs are rainbows and sunshine? Well actually, for me most of theย  running I do is super hard. Sometimes it’s fun and I usually like the way I feel when the run is done, but those rainbows and sunshine runs are very few and far in between. Saturday’s 8 miler though was the rare exception! Nothing but rainbows, sunshine, happy thoughts and feelings, even though it was a cold, cloudy, and windy day. It was fucking great!

img_0878

Sunday:

  • Rest Day

Yay! Yesterday’s run was fun, but boy am I tired today! Totally worth it though. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Spent the morning throwing together some crock pot chili, did a little bit of cleaning in the afternoon, and spent the rest of the afternoon reading Alex Hutchinson’s new book Endure. My hand was feeling almost back to normal today and I probably should have done some stretching, but meh, I was tired and didn’t feel like doing it haha. That’s not a good excuse, but oh well. Today was still a good day. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_0896

Total Weekly Mileage: 15.78

Not bad all things considered! Need to keep that number moving up though! My main running goal for the year is to build up to 40-50 miles per week. Obviously I’ve still got a way to go and I’m a little farther behind than I would like to be thanks to some setbacks earlier this year, but this week was definitely a step in the right direction! ๐Ÿ™‚

Happy Sunday everyone!

~Ashley

Thursday Things

They’re here!!!!!

img_0329-e1520978588979.jpg

I’ve mentioned before how excited I was about these Honey Stinger cracker n’ nut butter snack bars, right? Well, if not, I’m super duper excited about theseย  Honey Stinger cracker n’ nut butter snack bars!! Haha so of course I ordered a box of the almond butter and dark chocolate bars on Monday. Along with a couple of boxes of waffles because priorities. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So that all got here today and I was able to try out one of the snack bars. They. Are. Amazing! Honey Stinger has yet to disappoint! ๐Ÿ™‚

You can get a box of these bad boys here, if you’re interested. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_0393

Along with getting my Honey Stinger fix, I also got a new pair of Zensah compression sleeves earlier this week! How super spiffy are these?!?!?!

img_0334

Haha I think they’re pretty freaking great. Plus along with being super neat looking (who doesn’t like rubber ducks?), I love Zensah’s compression sleeves (and socks). They’re super comfortable and I don’t feel like I’m being squeezed to death when I’m wearing them, but they still provide a pretty good amount of compression. I think they’re great. ๐Ÿ™‚

These rubber ducky sleeves, mini crew socks, and no-show socks are limited edition, so if you’re into that kinda thing like me, I’d snatch them up while I can! And obviously I did haha. ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, I finally got around to updating my “Goals and PR’s” page. You know, we’re only halfway through the 3rd month of the year, but better late than never, right? ๐Ÿ˜‰ At some point I need to get around to update my “About” page. I think it’s been something like 2 years since I’ve updated that, and obviously some things have changed. Plus I’ve just never been a fan of my “about” page so I really probably should just sit down and work on that. I’ll do it at some point haha.

Oh man, I’ve talked a little bit about what kind of running nutrition and gear that I like, so I guess maybe I should talk about actual running…it’s hard. I’m just having one of those weeks where everything feels hard and I just don’t want to do it. Which is super discouraging after how much fun and how great I felt during the Whiskey Run last Sunday. But it happens. It seems to happen to me a lot, but hey, just gotta work through it. So that’s what I’m doing. I took a rest day on Monday since I raced on Sunday. Did an easy 2 mile run on Tuesday (it didn’t feel easy), did the most difficult 4 miler of my life on Wednesday. Seriously, it was awful. I got through it though. Slowly. But my goal was 4 so dammit I did 4 haha.

img_0366-1

This morning I wanted to get another 3-4 miles in, but holy cow I felt like shit! I woke up sore, tired, and gross feeling. And I’m not entirely sure why. I don’t think I’ve done anything so far this week to warrant being this sore, so I figured I should play it safe and take the day off. Part of me kinda wonders if that’s just a lame excuse to get out of doing what probably would have been another not so fun run, but the rest of me is too tired and achy to care haha. So I’m mostly happy with my decision. I have a feeling skipping today’s run means I’m avoiding some kind of illness or potential injury, because like I said, I really don’t think I have a reason to feel this crappy today haha.

So, instead of running I took an epsom salt bath at 9 am (that was really nice ๐Ÿ™‚ ), walked my dogs, did some yoga, drank some bone broth, and spent quite a bit of time working on blog posts. I definitely felt better doing all of that than I probably would have if I’d attempted to run. ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_0381

Whew, I really hope things start feeling better for me running-wise soon. But I’m pretty much dedicated to suffering through it until it finally does. Hopefully that means I’ll come out on the other side of it stronger, but I guess we’ll find out when I get there.

And on that note; who wants to see some super unflattering photos of my dad and I at the Whiskey Run 5k last Sunday? Because the official race photos were posted a few days ago, and oh boy we are some very photogenic people! ๐Ÿ˜‰

They got a great photo of me walking up a hill, I totally nailed the “stopping your watch at the finish line” photo (that’s the first time I’ve done that, I think! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ), there’s a great photo of my dad being in pain because he hurt himself in the last few feet of the run (he’s feeling better now though), and post race/breakfast coffee while walking to the car while my dad was still in pain. Haha oh man, they’re all pretty great, but none of them beat my photos from mile 11 at last years Longview half marathon.

My goal for this year at Longview is to not be making that face at mile 11. ๐Ÿ˜‚

And finally, how about a little chicken update? My tiny raptors are growing like crazy! Look at all of those feathers they’re growing!! ๐Ÿ™‚ Since they are doing so well, getting a little bigger, and the weather’s been relatively nice, Luke and I took them outside and let them explore their chicken coop a little bit for the first time last night. Initially they were kinda freaked out (and understandably so) but after a few minutes they started wandering around and checking everything out. After about 10 or 15 minutes we brought them back inside though. Don’t want them getting sick or too stressed out or anything. We want them laying eggs ASAP! They should start around June or July, so that’s not too long of a wait. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Plus by then they’ll be living outside full-time, and thank goodness for that! Having chicks living in your house is kinda fun, but they are messy little creatures haha.

Alrighty then! I guess that pretty much covers everything I wanted to talk about today. Today is basically my Friday because Luke is off work tomorrow and apparently we’re going to be super busy tomorrow! Should be fun though! ๐Ÿ™‚

Happy Friday eve!

~Ashley

Weekly Recap March 5th-11th, 2018

I had a lot of fun in Colorado and you definitely can’t beat the views there, but it’s nice to be back home and running the streets that I know like the back of my hand! Plus it’s much more comfortable being back at the elevation that I’m used to haha. Longmont may only be at around 5,000 feet above sea level, which is probably nothing for some people, but I live 1,000 feet above sea level, so that’s a pretty big difference for me! Oh and sleeping in my own bed is also really nice! I do miss waking up to views like these though…

img_9885

Anyway, lets recap this week, shall we? ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday:ย

  • 2 easy miles
  • 10 minutes of strength work

My 5k training plan for Running With The Cows started on Monday! So I kicked things off with 2 easy miles because I’m doing a beginner’s plan haha. That seemed like a smarter decision since I’m coming back from about 2 weeks off after breaking my toe and just a not so great winter of running. It’s all good though! I’m thinking this is actually going to end up being really good for me! Anyway, followed my easy run with 10 minutes of strenght work. Mostly because I kinda didn’t want to do it, but also because I had another 5k that I planned on doing with my dad on Sunday so I didn’t want to do anything too crazy that would make me sore for that. Not like a strength session on Monday was likely to still have me feeling sore by Sunday, but still. ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_0188

Tuesday:

  • Rest Day
  • 15 minutes of yoga

I like beginner’s training plans because they include a lot of rest. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Actually, this is the first actual 5k training plan that I’ve ever done, so I don’t really know if that’s true or not. But I’m gonna go ahead and assume it is. I actually thought about doing another easy mile or two on Tuesday because “I’m definitely at least an intermediate runner” and “miles matter” and “I don’t need 3 rest days in a week”. All of which are probably fair points. But I woke up feeling really tired and still a little run down. Probably from the traveling to, staying in, and then traveling back from Colorado. Let me tell ya, that 10 hour car ride sucks! And my dad, brother, and I managed to make the trip there and back a lot longer than it should have been haha. We all have fun together though.

On Tuesday I also started taking a magnesium supplement. I’ve been reading a lot about it and how is helps support something like 300 different processes in the body, and is supposed to be good for anxiety and teeth health (two things I could use all the help I can get for haha), and I figured since most people are deficient in magnesium I might as well try it out and see if I feel any different because of it.

img_0211

Wednesday:ย

  • 2 easy miles

Holy cow! According to my Garmin, I got a lot more deep sleep the night before than I usually do! I’m not sure it that was a fluke or because of the magnesium, but I’m definitely interested in finding out! After I took the magnesium on Tuesday night I started to feel really calm and kinda tired after about 5 ish minutes. So I suppose there’s a good possibility that it really did make a difference in my sleep. I’m wondering if anything else will start to feel different as I continue to take it.

Anyway, Wednesday’s run was less than steller. I got chased by a dog again. I’ve actually been chased by this dog several times before. His owner always has him tied out in his front yard and the dog breaks off all the time. It’s really obnoxious and the dog tends to act pretty aggressively. But can’t really do anything about that…

img_0213

Thursday:ย

  • 1 hour on the stationary bike

Cross training! Yay! Hahaha not really. Cross training is boring. The stationary bike is boring. Being on it for an hour is a special kind of torturer for me. But watching Green Day things makes it a little bit better.

img_0235-1

Friday:

  • 3 Miles

Whew man, this run was so. Freaking. Hard. Jeez Louise… Can we just talk about how difficult running is the week before your period? Because it really is. I was so tired. I felt like my legs were made of lead and that I was running through a foot of mud. It was pretty awful and tookย forever.ย But on the bright side, I found a rubber duck dressed as a gnome on this run. So obviously that made up for everything. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_0253

Saturday:

  • Rest Day

I felt a little better on Saturday. Less tired, but still bleh. I could have definitely run on Saturday. Maybe even should have run on Saturday. But I wanted to feel rested and have my legs feel good for the Whiskey run on Sunday that my dad and I did, so I focused on that instead.

But sticking with the rubber duck theme, yesterday I bought some new compression sleeves yesterday! And the shipped out to me on Saturday and should be here by Monday. I can’t wait for them to get here! They’re so spiffy! Plus I love Zensah’s compression sleeves! They’re pretty great! ๐Ÿ™‚

Sunday:

  • Whiskey Run 5k with my dad

Oh man this was so much fun!! We did really well, had lots of fun, got our shot of Whiskey at the end, and had a great breakfast afterwards! Haha that’s all I’ve got about that for now though. I’m gonna try to have a full race recap up at some point tomorrow. Haha there were a few reasons why both of us could have had a really bad day, but like I said, it went really well for both of us! ๐Ÿ™‚

Total Weekly Mileage: 10.10

Haha I’ve got a lot of work to do in the weekly mileage department. But I did spend two weeks doing nothing because of my probably broken to, and 10.10 miles is a whole lot better than that! So I’ll gladly take it!

Happy Sunday, everyone!

Weekly Recap: November 27th-December 3rd, 2017

Monday:ย

  • RWRunStreak Day 5: 5k

Ugh! Why was it 60 degrees out on Monday?!?!? Actually, why has it been super crazy warm for most of November…It’s looking like this winter is shaping up to be another warm and dry one. Sad face. I’m not a fan…

But on the bright side! Monday’s run went pretty well! I felt great so I decided to do a nice little interval workout. Haha so this isn’t technically my 5k PR (I’m still suffering from new watch syndrome ๐Ÿ˜‰ ), but hey, I’ll gladly take it!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Tuesday:ย

  • RWRunStreak Day 6: 1 mile

So I may or may not have run this mile a little too fast. Especially since I decided to do interval work on Monday. Oops…This is exactly the kind of thing that got me into trouble last time I attempted this streak. I’ve really gotta learn to rein it in haha. But not much I can do about it now and I had a lot of fun, so at least there’s that.

Also, during this run I wore a blaze orange hat, olive green shirt, colorful, foliage print tights, blue shoes, and a bright yellow watch. I am really good at matching things. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Wednesday:ย

  • RWRunStreak Day 7: 3 easy miles

Nothing too exciting on Wednesday. Ran down to a pasture to try to see some cows but they weren’t out that morning. Haha oh well. At least I got a couple of miles done. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve kinda been slacking on everything that was not running so far this week. Oops…I need to get back to doing that.

Thursday:ย

  • RWRunStreak Day 8: 1 mile

Another not so exciting day of streaking haha. Just did an easy mile to keep it going. ๐Ÿ™‚ But my super neato Zensah holiday socks got here on Thursday and I legit waited for them to show up so I could wear them for this mile.

img_8006

They’re a limited edition par of Zensah socks, but you can still snag yourself a pair here while supplies last!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Friday:

  • RWRunStreak Day 9: 1 easy mile

Just another easy mile on Friday. My legs were feeling a bit tired so I figured I shouldn’t push it too much. Especially since I’m still kinda early into this streak. It’s all good though! I actually manged to run this one “easy” so I’m pretty proud of myself about that. ๐Ÿ™‚

Saturday:

  • RWRunStreak Day 10: 5miles
  • 40 minutes of yoga

5 easy peasy miles! Not gonna lie, at this point my legs are pretty tired. But I suppose that’s pretty normal after running 10 days in a row, after taking a little break from running, after a big goal race. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Haha I have a feeling that I’m going to end up being super duper tired in the days to come, but I think my body will adjust as long as I stick with it. I have a really bad habit of not sticking with the goals I set for myself and making excuses for not doing it. Like I’m too tired or my legs are too sore or whatever, and then I don’t end up meeting my goals or making any kind of progress. I’m not going to do that this time though. I am going to finish this freaking streak haha.

Sunday:ย

  • RWRunStreak Day 11: 1 mile
  • Day one of Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred

Today’s run was brought to you by the Foxboro Hot Tubs, becauseย Iย reallyย didn’t want to run today. As predicted, I’m tired and my legs hurt. But like I said, I’m not giving up on this thing, so I turned on Stop Drop and Roll because I can’t listen to this album and not move, ya feel me? Got my run done, and then on a whim decided that I wanted to do Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred again. It’s a fun program and it’s been a while since I’ve done it so I figured, why not? Plus I really need to work on my strength so this should help! So basically I’m doing two challenges at a time because I’m crazy. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I did feel less sore and tired after the workout though, so that’s good. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m sure I’ll be crazy sore tomorrow though haha.

Total Weekly Mileage: 15.13

So the plan for this month is to start building up my total weekly mileage and just build a much better base through out the winter. The streak should definitely help with that, since I’m going to be running at least a mile everyday. ๐Ÿ™‚ I guess 15 miles is a good place to work up from. We’ll see how it actually goes, but right now I’d like to build up to 25-30 by the end of the month and then hopefully 50-60 by maybe February or March. I’m thinking that’ll be good for a nice slow build. I want to get stronger physically and mentally, and I can’t think of a better way to do that than building up my mileage. And a little bit of added strength work as well. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Fun Mail Day, The Streak Continues, and Other Thursday Things

Alrighty! I’ve got a bunch of randomness to talk about today, so just bear with me for a little bit. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Christmas time is here!!! That means decorating, baking, gift wrapping, Christmas music, lots of packages in the mail, family time, and all sorts of other fun and craziness. Oh man, I love it though. Even though it can become a little bit stressful. ๐Ÿ˜‰ So far I’ve got the inside of the house decorated and it looks great!! I still want to hang up the outside lights, but Luke wont let me get on the roof. Something about me being clumsy and not wanting a hospital bill…So I guess he’s gonna have to do it at some point. ๐Ÿ˜‰

All of the animals are ok with Christmas, except for Finn. Christmas confuses and upsets him and he’s been spending most of his time hiding outside or in the bedroom. Haha but this is his first Christmas so this is all new to him.

We’ve also officially got a good start on Christmas gifts! We’ve got his mom and his brother and sister on that side of the family taken care of. All that’s left to do is wrap them and ship them off to Minnesota. We also know what we’re getting his dad, one of his brothers on that side of the family, and we bought his other brother on that side of the family his gift. We’ve got one of my sisters taken care of, we know what we’re getting my brother and dad, we’ve just got to figure out my other sister and mom. And we’ve got gifts to each other all figured out. There’s still one thing I want to pick up for him, but I’m gonna take care of that this weekend. ๐Ÿ™‚

And I guess that brings me to the fun mail day stuff!! Well, today was supposed to be a fun mail day. A bunch of stuff that Luke and I had ordered over the last week or so was all supposed to come today. But a gift I’d gotten him and my Honey Stinger stuff got delayed. That’s not surprising, shipping stuff gets all kinds of crazy this time of year and I’m not worried about it. I am pretty super excited about my Honey Stinger stuff though.ย They had a crazy awesome cyber Monday sale. Literally everything was 50% off, so I stocked up on waffles and also bought a pair of socks, because I can always use more running socks haha. That’s all supposedly going to make it here tomorrow. Hopefully it does because I’m pretty stoked about all the waffles I bought haha.

Anyways, the stuff he got me for Christmas arrived and I have been told multiple times to stay out of it. Haha that’s pretty hypocritical from someone who told me if he finds where I’ve hidden his Christmas gifts he was going to open it and ruin Christmas (his words, not mine). But whatever. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Also my amazing holiday socks from Zensah also came today! I’m so stoked about these socks!! I actually purchased them on the way home from Colorado last Friday because I wanted to make sure I was able to snag a pair and I was afraid they’d sell out pretty quickly. But anyway, I’m so excited that they’re here and they are probably the only pair of socks that I’m going to be wearing all season. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_8001

Also, speaking of Honey Stinger (I’m so good atย segues ๐Ÿ˜‰ ), I’m super duper excited to announce that I’ve officially been accepted back into the hive for 2018!! Yay! Honey Stinger for real fuels 90% of my running, dog walking, road trips, hiking, and other random adventures. Seriously, I’m not kidding when I say Honey Stinger is my favorite fuel. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_7960

And I guess while we’re on the subject of brands I’m an ambassador for, lets talk about StrideBox for the holidays for a second!! First off, I absolutely love StrideBox! It’s basically like getting a Christmas gift in the mail once a month. ๐Ÿ™‚ Second off, if you’re looking for a great gift for one of your runner friends, a gift subscription to StrideBox just might be the way to go!! And now until December 24th, you can use the codeย RunningRebel10ย to get 10% off of a 3 or 6 month gift subscription to StrideBox.

img_7033

Okey Dokey, now that that’s out of the way, lets talk about this run streak for a second!

img_7995

As of today I’m 8 days in and feeling pretty good! I’m actually really glad to have a goal to keep me going haha. If I didn’t I don’t think I’d have done very much running this week. Not like I’ve actually done a lot of running or anything, but it would have been a lotย less if I didn’t have a goal to get out there and do at least a mile every day. ๐Ÿ™‚ย So for today I did the bare minimum of a mile, and I legit waited until the mail got here so that I could wear my super spiffy socks. They made me feel better about the fact that it’s been kinda warm and sunny out lately.

img_8006

Keeping up with the running thing is going well but I’m not doing so well with the stretching/strength training/cross training thing. Well, at least I haven’t been this week. Last week I actually did kinda well with all of that, but I’ve been slacking off for a couple of days now. I definitely need to get back on track with all of that. Especially recovery stuff. I think that just might be important when it comes to the run streak thing. ๐Ÿ˜‰ So I spent some time getting reacquainted with my foam roller and yoga mat this afternoon. Yeah, that sucked pretty bad but it was totally worth it! Well, probably haha. Also spent a little bit of time on the stationary bike, just to get my legs moving in a way that’s not running or walking. I figured that would probably be a good idea. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_8008

Torturer tools.ย

Alrighty then! That was basically just a bunch of super duper randomness, but my “Thursday things” posts tend to be just that! But that is all for today I suppose. So Happy Thursday everyone! ๐Ÿ™‚
