Weekly Recap: January 8th-14th, 2018

This week was a tough one. I’d be lying if I said anything different. Mostly thanks to anxiety related things that I’ve still yet to figure out the cause of. Haha oh well. So I ended up focusing a lot on yoga this week. I think that ended up being really good for me. πŸ™‚

Monday:

  • Rest Day

So Luke actually ended up taking Monday off from work. We went grocery shopping, but other than that we did a whole lot of nothing. So yay for impromptu rest days, I guess. πŸ˜‰

img_8818

Tuesday:

  • 2 miles
  • 25 minutes of yoga

This month’s StrideBox showed up in my mailbox while I was attempting (and slightly failing but still managing 2 miles) to run on Tuesday. Yay! πŸ™‚ I swear it’s like Christmas morning the day that thing comes. It’s pretty freaking sweet. And after my run I did a little bit of yoga, because like I said, I was trying to focus on that this week.

img_8843

Wednesday:Β

  • 30 minutes of yoga
  • 10 minutes on the stationary bike

Tuesday’s run was kind of a fail. I mean,Β  I did still make it 2 miles and 2 miles is better than no miles, but still….So I decided thatΒ  I was going to skip running on Wednesday and just do yoga instead. That was a good decision! Haha but that night I did hop on my stationary bike for a few minutes because I was bored. πŸ˜‰

And unrelated, but it’s super muddy outside so all 3 of my dogs (but mostly Finn and Dean) are gross mud monsters and I’ve given up on ever having clean floors ever again. Fun fun fun.

img_8851

Thursday:

  • 10 minutes on the stationary bike to warm up
  • 3.89 miles of “running”
  • 30 minutes of yoga
  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike

Thursday morning brought lots of rain. Which eventually turned to ice, and then later in the day snow. I got my “run” done during the ice portion of the day. Run is in quotes because it was more slipping, sliding, walking over really bad patches of ice, and stopping for cars, that it was actual running (I talk a little more about all of that here. πŸ˜‰ ). So normally I’m a little more neurotic about hitting my daily mileage, so not gonna lie, it kinda hurts me to type “3.89” instead of “4” miles. But the roads were getting increasingly worse the longer I was out, so the second I got to my driveway I called it quits instead of going a little further to actually hit 4 miles. Haha but I mean, it honestly is close enough and really isn’t that big of a deal. Plus running on ice is freaking hard! This has to count for at least 6 or 7 miles. πŸ˜‰ I kid, but it is hard. And pretty fun too!!

Oh and all of the mud in my backyard is frozen for now. So that’s kinda nice! Hahaha well, until it melts I guess.

Friday:

  • Rest day

I woke up tired, sore, and unmotivated to do pretty much anything. Initially I was super frustrated with myself because I’m supposed to be working towards all of these big goals I have and these small amounts of running that I’ve been doing just aren’t going to get me there. And then I remembered that I actually did kinda do a lot yesterday. I mean, running on ice is freaking hard! Plus I was sick last week and the week before that was Christmas, so once I took a minute to step back and remember all of that, I realized that I’m not doing too bad and that I can’t just jump right back into where I was months before this just because I want to. I’ve got to slowly get back to the mileage that I was at and then start building up from there (which is my main goal for the year), and attempting to do too much too soon is going to do nothing but cause problems. So I did not do the easy 20 minute run I had planned for Friday.

I’m trying very hard not to compare myself and my running to others and to where I’ve been before. This is where I am now and that’s 100% ok. Not running on Friday was a win for me. πŸ™‚

Saturday:

  • 3.2 miles
  • 20 minutes of yoga

That was hard….Running in general is hard. But that’s one of the things that makes it so special, right? πŸ™‚ Just trying to slowly work back into a more normal running routine. So far, I’m making a tiny bit of progress.

img_8939

Sunday:

  • Rest Day

We got some more snow today! Yay!!! I spent a lot of time playing outside with the dogs in it. Snow makes everything more exciting! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

img_8949

Total Weekly Mileage: 10.21

That’s better than last week and that’s all that matters. πŸ™‚ Plus my goal was to focus more on yoga and I definitely succeeded at that!

January 12th, 2018

This morning I woke up tired, sore, and unmotivated to do pretty much anything. Initially I was super frustrated with myself. I mean, it wasn’t all that long ago when I could do an easy 4 miler like I did yesterday, and wake up feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to take on the day and tackle another run. But I took a minute to take a step back and really look at what’s going on. I did kind of do a lot yesterday! I braved the elements and did an almost 4 mile run (it was 3.89, but that’s freaking close enough hahaha) with ice under my feet and pretty harsh wind gusts which where sometimes at my back and sometimes at my face. It was slow going (it was more slipping, sliding, walking over really bad patches of ice, and stopping for cars), hard work, and most importantly, a lot of fun!

And then later in the day I did a 30 minute yoga sequence and spend 30 minutes on my stationary bike (and it wasn’t 30 minutes of me just fucking around on the bike like I sometimes do, I was actually putting in some work hahaha! πŸ˜‰ ). And that was all on top of me being sick last week, and being crazy busy with Christmas stuff the week before that, so no freaking wonder I don’t feel like doing anything today!

Sure maybe at one point I could have done a hard workout after everything I did yesterday. And yes, compared to what some people can do/are currently doing, I did hardly anything yesterday. But comparing myself to other people or to what I could do at another point and time is literally going to get me nowhere. It doesn’t getΒ anyoneΒ anywhere.

So, this is where I’m at right now and that’s ok. I’ve got some really big goals I want to accomplish and I’m going to have to work really hard to make them happen. But right now I need to focus on even getting to the point of being able to work towards them. I can’t just jump right back into what I was doing several months ago and think that will work. It won’t. More likely than not I’ll just end up burnt out or hurt, and I’m already super injury prone haha. I need to work back up to where I was and then build from there. And if that means having to skip out on a run here or there to rest, then so be it. For me today, not running is a win. πŸ™‚

I know this post is kinda just one big “note to self” thing. But if you take anything away from it, let it be the fact that it’s ok to be where you’re at right now and to work with that instead of comparing yourself to someone else or to your past self (something that I’m super guilty of), and then trying to do too much, or getting frustrated and giving up on whatever your goal happens to be. You’ve got this. I believe in you. Which is also a good “note to self”. πŸ™‚

I hope you have a fantastic Friday!!

Weekly Recap: December 25th-31st, 2017

Well, this week has been a little bit crazy to say the least!! Between traveling to Illinois, running around everywhere to see family and go to Christmas parties, staying up super late and consuming alcohol, and traveling back to Kansas, I didn’t exactly have a lot of time to get any kind of running or workout done. Which is obviously fine and pretty much to be expected, and although at one point I did wish I had brought running gear to Illinois, for the most part I was too busy and having too much fun to worry about getting any kind of miles done. Which is probably a good thing since attempting that streak seemed to take a lot out of me haha. But anyway, basically what I’m saying is that this weekly recap isn’t going to be very exciting because I haven’t exactly done much hahaha.

Monday (Christmas Day):Β

On Christmas day Luke and I spent literally the whole day running around everywhere to attempt to see a bunch of our family. We started the day out and his dad’s house to open presents from Santa (apparently Santa know’s about my Nike addiction and brought me a very nice pair of fleece leggings and pull over jacket complete with thumb holes!!) ;). After that we went to my grandma’s house to drop off Finn (she had a crate that we left him in. He was too overwhelmed to run loose with her dog, Luke’s dad dogs, or even our dogs, and we couldn’t take him everywhere with us.) and say hi to her. We also got to see my sister, her husband, and my brother while we were there. After about an hour there we went to Luke’s grandma Becky’s house for their Christmas party, where we ate a big lunch and where Santa always shows up to help hand out presents. And weirdly enough Luke’s grandpa is never around for that hahaha. πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰ After hanging out there for a while we made our way to Luke’s grandma Wilma’s. She had her Christmas party the night before (but we couldn’t go because we were on our way to Illinois on Christmas eve night). But we still got to hang out with her and talk to her for a while which was really nice. After that we had to go back to Luke’s dad’s for their party with his step mom’s parents and siblings. While we were there we had a huge dinner, hung out, and basically watched her brother’s kids run around like crazy (Luke’s step mom called them walking advertisements for birth control haha. And it’s not like they’re bad kids or anything. They were just excited.). And finally after that Luke took me back to my grandma’s and dropped me off there where Finn and I ended up staying the night and he finally got over himself and decided that my grandma’s and uncle’s dog Luther wasn’t so bad after all.

Haha told you we were super busy!!

img_8604

Santa also brought me a bunch of super spiffy, fuzzy socks that all feature a different, cute animal. πŸ˜‰

Tuesday:Β

The original plan for Tuesday was to make our way home to Kansas. But it ended up snowing in Illinois, Kansas, and pretty much all along I-70. The roads were pretty bad when Luke came to pick me up from my grandma’s house, so we ended up going back to his dad’s and staying another night. So pretty much all of Tuesday they all sat around playing video games. It was 2 degrees outside so nobody really felt like doing anything I guess. The problem is I can’t sit around for that long staring at a screen, so I ended up sitting around and being bored all day. Haha I seriously considered taking my new running gear out for a spin, but eventually decided against it because one layer wasn’t going to be enough for 2 degrees, a negative windchill, and the snow. Plus I didn’t even have running shoes, but it’s not like I haven’t run in nothing but socks before hahah.

Anyway, that evening we ended up going out to eat at a Mexican place for dinner, and after that Luke, one of his brothers, and I went to Target to get Cards Against Humanity and then the three of us and Luke’s dad ended up staying up until 3 am drinking, (well except for his brother who is only 18) and playing that. That was a long night haha, but it was fun! πŸ™‚

img_8602

Wednesday:Β

We FINALLY made it back home around 3 pm on Wednesday! Don”t get me wrong, we had a lot of fun, but it felt soooo great to be home! Haha and all of the dogs were very happy to be back as well. πŸ™‚

img_8610

Thursday:

  • 3 miles

FINALLY got the chance to hit the road and get in a few miles! Haha let me tell ya, I was definitely feeling all of the big meals, Christmas cookies, and alcohol I’d consumed earlier this week during this run. It still felt really good to get out and get the ol’ legs moving though. πŸ™‚ Plus it was nice and cold, and there was still some snow on the ground, and that always makes things more fun! At least it does for me haha. πŸ˜‰

I also wanted to do some yoga or stretching, but I kinda got distracted by taking down Christmas decorations and then grocery shopping haha. Oh well.

img_8622

Friday:

  • 1 hour on the stationary bike
  • 15 minutes of yoga

On Friday I got a wonderful surprise from my sistersΒ  in the mail!! They got me a running log for 2018 and Run Fast Eat Slow for Christmas. So that was pretty exciting! I was actually thinking about buying myself a running log for 2018 to help me keep track of my goals, but I’m glad I didn’t haha. And I’m super duper exctited to try out the recipes in Run Fast Eat Slow. I’ve heard very good things about them! πŸ™‚

Anyway, I spent the most lazy hour ever on my stationary bike on Friday. Like, I don’t think my HR ever got out of the “warm up zone” haha. Ah well, still better than nothing! After that I did some yoga, walked Lily, and spent pretty much the rest of my day attempting to clean the house but getting too distracted to actually get anything done…

Saturday:Β

  • Rest Day

I guess all of the travel, late nights, and general Christmas craziness finally caught up with me. I woke up tired, congested, and with a sore throat…I was hoping that all I needed was a little bit of rest so I decided to spend my Saturday curled up on the couch with all of my border collie friends (because it was waaay too cold out to leave Dean and Finn outside all day like they want to), Netflix, and lots and lots of tea. But it’s looking like I’ve done all of the running I’m going to do in 2018 and I’ll probably be ringing in the New Year sick…

Sunday:Β

  • Rest Day

Still feeling a little too sick to do much. Especially in this cold weather. But I am feeling better than was yesterday! I spent my morning making the Carrot-Ginger soup recipe from Run Fast Eat Slow and Luke and I are going to be spending the night at home. It’ll be nice though. 😁

Weekly Recap: December 11th-17th, 2017

Monday:

  • 1.5 miles

Ugh, by Monday I was starting to feel really tired. I was still kind of in denial about why though, so I did 1.5 miles to keep the streak alive.

img_8320

Tuesday:

  • 1 mile

On Tuesday I made the very poor decision of putting spinach in my smoothie. That was a really bad idea and I explain all of that here. πŸ˜‰ I spent most of Tuesday morning stuck on the couch with stomach cramps and the only relife I could get was from a REALLY hot heat pack. I’ve still got a few red marks on my stomach haha. But I still got in a mile!

img_8340

Wednesday:Β

  • 2 miles
  • 30 Day Shred Day 5
  • 10 minutes of yoga
  • 40 minutes on the stationary bike

By Wednesday I was getting really frustrated. I couldn’t run as far as I wanted. As I knew I could! I was tired, I sore, and upset. It seemed like nothing was helping my tired legs and I was beginning to think that my streaking days might be over.

img_8353

Thursday: The Day My Streak Died

  • Rest Day

On Thursday I woke up and I knew it was over. I had gotten a full 8 hours of sleep but I woke up exhausted. I was sore in places that I didn’t think I should be sore in and I could barely bring myself to get out of bed, let alone trying to run. So I knew I had to quite. My streak had ended at 21 days and I wasn’t even upset. I was relieved.

img_8370

Friday:

  • Rest Day

Holy cow! What a difference one day of doing nothing made! I woke up feeling so much better! I was less tired and sore and felt a lot better all around. Ending my streak was definitely the right move. I’m thinking a little break from running is in order, and another rest day was as well. πŸ™‚

Saturday:Β

  • Rest Day

Literally did nothing exciting on Saturday haha.

Sunday:

  • Rest day

Basically a repeat of Saturday haha. I’ve been very much enjoying my little break from running and pretty much everything else. I also don’t feel so tired and gross anymore, so that’s a huge plus!!

Weekly Recap December 4th-10th, 2017

Monday:

  • RWRunStreak Day 12: 2.5 miles
  • 30 Day Shred Day 2

The plan for Monday was actually 3 miles but once I got to 2.5 I quite haha. I figured that was close enough. πŸ˜‰ Anyways, got up, got my run done, then did day two of the 30 Day Shred. Oh man, I was tired, sore, but I still did it! My legs actually felt a lot better today though. They’re definitely not as sore/tired as they have been in the past couple of days, so I guess they’re adjusting to the streaking thing. πŸ™‚

img_8100

How awesome are my matching skills haha!? Dear Santa, Ashley could use another pair of black running tights. πŸ˜‰

Tuesday:Β

  • RWRunStreak Day 13: 1.5 miles
  • 30 Day Shred Day 3

Did you guys know I have a super power? It just so happens to be catching loose dogs! 🐢 Lol so while attempting to get in a mile for day 13 ofΒ #rwrunstreakΒ I saw this guy out running around, so I called him and he came right to me (seriously, it’s my super power. πŸ˜‰). So I grabbed him, called his owner, and we hung out for 5 ish minutes until his owner got there. Problem solved, Ashley saves the day! πŸ˜„ So I turn onto a different street and try to continue on my way, but I end up being chased by ANOTHER dog. And I know this dog and he’s not my biggest fan. You see, I run past his house almost every day and he’s always on a tie out near the road and he always barks/growls at me. Understandably so, he’s just protecting what is his. The problem is today he finally had his chance to teach me a lesson and he was definitely going to take it! He came running at me, hackles raised and growling. So I tried talking to him and letting him sniff my hand, but he wasn’t having it and he snapped at me. So his owner saw him and came running at him, so the dog took off running (pro tip, if your dog ever gets loose don’t run after him, he’ll just think it’s a fun game and keep running away). So I saw my chance to get away and bailed onto another street. Usually I would have helped this guy catch the dog, but like I said, he doesn’t like me and I didn’t want to get bit. Besides, I already got one dog back to where he needed to be to day. So that’s my story for today. I’m just out there saving the world, one loose dog at a time!!πŸ•πŸ˜„

img_8124-1

Wednesday:Β

  • RWRunStreak Day 14: 2 miles

Fuck me. All of my running plans for the next few days just went out the window.☹️ My brother in law came here last night, and he likes to use his fucking vape right on the front porch and then open the door right after he does so his huge chemical trails follow him right into the house. Not only is that super disgusting, but It hardcore fucks up my lungs because I have asthma. Luckily it’s not that bad, but vape stuff and cigarette smoke always causes me a lot of problems…Anyway, I wanted to do 4 miles today but I knew that wasn’t gonna happen. Honestly I’m impressed that I made it through 2.

img_8146

Thursday:

  • RWRunStreak Day 15: 1 Mile
  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike

Nothing fancy. Just a mile to keep the streak alive. πŸ™‚

img_8170

Friday:Β

  • RWRunStreak Day 16: 1 mile

After a long day of Christmas shopping, gift wrapping, and light hanging (I talk in depth about all of my Christmas time adventures here πŸ™‚ ), I still managed to get a mile done! Hahaha not gonna lie, after being out and about all day running was the last thing I wanted to do, but I’m glad I did. I ended up feeling a lot better afterwards.

img_8251-1

Saturday:

  • RWRunStreak Day 17: 2 miles
  • 45 minutes on the stationary bike

My asthma was still kinda acting up on Saturday, so I did two miles and then switched to the stationary bike. Not the kind of run I wanted to do, but at least I’m keeping the streak going and I’m still moving!

img_8281

Sunday:Β

  • RWRunStreak Day 18: 3 miles
  • 30 Day Shred Day 4

Running has felt incredibly difficult lately. Probably thanks to my asthma and brother in law but it’s still really frustrating. But at least I made it through 3 miles today. πŸ™‚

Weekly Recap: September 25th-October 1st, 2017

Monday:

  • 2 miles
  • 15 minutes of yoga

I guess Monday was really just a test run to see how my knee felt. Haha it was super humid, hot, and gross out, and I felt pretty awful. That was pretty much to be expected though. The first few runs back always suck…but other than that it went well! My knee felt pretty good and I’m thinking I’ll be able to slowly get back into my running routine and will be good to go for my half marathon in November.

Also, if it could start feeling like fall outside, that’d be great…

Processed with Rookie Cam

Tuesday:

  • Rest day

Didn’t run on Tuesday, but Luke and I did see Cherry Bombs, Steel Panther, and Stone Sour live, so that was a lot of fun! πŸ™‚

img_6707

Wednesday:

  • 3 miles

So this run went a lot better than I thought it would considering I’m slowly getting back into running, I was up late the night before, and I did some drinking at the Stone Sour concert. πŸ˜‰ But it was about 60 degrees and lightly drizzling, so that made it more fun. πŸ™‚

Processed with Rookie Cam

Thursday:

  • Rest day

So that kinda happened by accident. I was planning on doing some kind of cross training, but I ended up in a bit of a cleaning frenzy and ended up doing a bit of deep cleaning around the house instead. So I mean, really I’m just glad I ended up getting so much done haha!

Friday:

  • Pumpkin picking and errand running (totally counts! πŸ˜‰)

Luke and I were super busy on Friday! First we went to a farm thing  where you can pick apples and pumpkins, and picked up some pretty awesome pumpkins! When we got there we found out that we actually got really lucky and that Friday was the first day that they were opening the pumpkin patch for pumpkin picking. And we got there right after they opened so we we were some of the first people to pick pumpkins! That was sooooo cool, because we got the first pick of the pumpkins (and we found some pretty freaking awesome ones!), the field wasn’t all trampled because hardly anyone had walked in it, so we got to walk around through the vines and I actually ran through them and hurdled them and told Luke about every singe neat pumpkin that I saw. Haha so yeah, basically I’m a toddler. πŸ˜‰

Then after we got our pumpkins we went out for Chinese food (yum!), then went to several different stores to grocery shop and pick up stuff we needed. So basically we were gone most of the day and by the time we got home we were both exhausted and ended up watching Bob’s Burgers for the rest of the night. Hahaha so I didn’t run, but it ended up being a great day. πŸ™‚

Saturday:

  • Rest Day

That wasn’t exactly the plan, but the day just kinda got away from me haha.

Sunday:

  • 2 miles
  • 15 minutes on the stationary bike

This was one of those really tough “just getting back into it” runs. It was short, slow, and sucky, but at least I’m getting out there and doing it. πŸ˜„

Weekly Recap: September 11th-17th, 2017

Monday:

  • 2 miles
  • 10 minute kettle bell workout

Hurray! I ran on Monday!! Just two miles, but hey, that’s better than nothing! My knee was aching a bit near the end of the first mile, but I was a mile away from home and I had to get back somehow so I ran that mile back. πŸ˜‰ And it just felt really good to run again so I didn’t really want to stop, even though I probably should have stopped once my knee started hurting. Oh well.

Tuesday:

  • Rest day

Trying to take things easy and do the whole run every other day thing, so that I don’t over do it and hopefully give my knee more time to heal. So, took a rest day on Tuesday. πŸ™‚

Wednesday:

  • 2 miles
  • 10 minutes of stretching

Check out my fancy new compression leggings!! Not sure if they actually helped out during my run, but my leg was feeling a bit better on Wednesday, during my run. πŸ™‚

Processed with Rookie Cam

Thursday:

  • Rest day

Yeah, I just didn’t feel like doing anything on Thursday, so I didn’t haha. But in all fairness, not doing anything was probably good for my knee situation. πŸ™‚

Friday:

I guess you could call Friday an active rest day? Haha Luke and I went grocery shopping, ran some errands, and then took the dogs to the park and walked them around for a while. We actually managed to wear all three of them out, which is not an easy task to accomplish. πŸ˜‰

img_6401

Saturday:

Another day spend doing nothing haha. Luke and I stayed up pretty late the night before so I didn’t get much sleep and was basically too tired to do anything on Saturday. I feel like I’ve just gotten lazy though. I mean, at the very least I could have stretched or something. Oh well.

Sunday:

  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 20 minutes of yoga

Attempting to ward off the cycle of laziness that I’m currently about to fall into. I’ve caught myself thinking things along the lines of “running is not currently happening, so why do anything?” Yeah that’s like the opposite of what I should be doing. πŸ˜‚ But I made the time to get active and not sit around and feel sorry for myself today, and that’s totally a win!!

So tomorrow I’m going to go for another short run and try to assess my current leg situation and then go from there!

Happy Sunday!

~Ashley
