Winter is going above and beyond the typical cold weather here in Kansas. We’ve spent a lot of time dealing with negative temperatures. Now, I’m definitely a fan of cold weather, but things definitely stop being fun once the temperatures start getting into the negatives.

We did get some snow on Sunday/Monday. Now snow makes everything more fun. πŸ˜‰ Hahaha I know a lot of people don’t necessarily agree with me on that one, but I love it!!

Since snow makes everything more fun, obviously I had to go for a run on Monday. As you can see in the photo above, the roads weren’t plowed (and actually for the most part they still aren’t! At least around my town they aren’t.) and it was really pretty outside! It was, however, -9 degrees. That coupled with the wind was not so fun. So I went out with the plan to figure out how far I could go before I wanted to die. Turns out, the answer to that question was 4.35 miles. But with all that snow on the roads it felt a lot farther than that haha. Aaaand of course this run was fueled by Honey Stinger! But let me tell ya, when those waffles get cold, they are incredibly hard to eat! πŸ˜‚

So in summery, Monday’s run included snow, -9 degree temperatures, wind, unplowed roads, Honey Stinger, and was incredibly fun!!! 😁😁😁 But I was pretty much down for the count afterwards. Running in snow is freaking hard!! So I took a super hot shower, attempted to nap (it really just turned into me laying in bed for half an hour), and later in the afternoon my next door neighbor who was apparently off from school yesterday wanted to come over to play with the ferrets, so I downed a second cup of coffee and she came over and hung out for a while. Oh and did I mention that she’s only 4? Haha she’s a lot of fun though. We usually play with the ferrets, watch cartoons, and play with the Barbies she brings over.

And that was pretty much my whole day, yesterday. 😁

Today is going to be nowhere near as exciting though. I’m actually probably going to be stuck inside all day, because it currently feels like -20 outside…

Yeah, that’s too much even for me haha. Luke had to call off work because we our car’s heat doesn’t work, and he didn’t want to drive half an hour in -20 degrees with no heat. I don’t blame him. That would definitely not be a fun drive.

Apparently the crazy cold won’t be sticking around for much longer though. The high for Friday is 44 degrees, the high for Saturday is 50, and then after that it’s supposed to stay in the mid to high 40’s. For a few more days. Weather is weird here in the Midwest.

But for now it’s looking like Luke, the dogs, and I are going to be holed up inside for at least today.

This morning I woke up tired, sore, and unmotivated to do pretty much anything. Initially I was super frustrated with myself. I mean, it wasn’t all that long ago when I could do an easy 4 miler like I did yesterday, and wake up feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to take on the day and tackle another run. But I took a minute to take a step back and really look at what’s going on. I did kind of do a lot yesterday! I braved the elements and did an almost 4 mile run (it was 3.89, but that’s freaking close enough hahaha) with ice under my feet and pretty harsh wind gusts which where sometimes at my back and sometimes at my face. It was slow going (it was more slipping, sliding, walking over really bad patches of ice, and stopping for cars), hard work, and most importantly, a lot of fun!

And then later in the day I did a 30 minute yoga sequence and spend 30 minutes on my stationary bike (and it wasn’t 30 minutes of me just fucking around on the bike like I sometimes do, I was actually putting in some work hahaha! πŸ˜‰ ). And that was all on top of me being sick last week, and being crazy busy with Christmas stuff the week before that, so no freaking wonder I don’t feel like doing anything today!

Sure maybe at one point I could have done a hard workout after everything I did yesterday. And yes, compared to what some people can do/are currently doing, I did hardly anything yesterday. But comparing myself to other people or to what I could do at another point and time is literally going to get me nowhere. It doesn’t getΒ anyoneΒ anywhere.

So, this is where I’m at right now and that’s ok. I’ve got some really big goals I want to accomplish and I’m going to have to work really hard to make them happen. But right now I need to focus on even getting to the point of being able to work towards them. I can’t just jump right back into what I was doing several months ago and think that will work. It won’t. More likely than not I’ll just end up burnt out or hurt, and I’m already super injury prone haha. I need to work back up to where I was and then build from there. And if that means having to skip out on a run here or there to rest, then so be it. For me today, not running is a win. πŸ™‚

I know this post is kinda just one big “note to self” thing. But if you take anything away from it, let it be the fact that it’s ok to be where you’re at right now and to work with that instead of comparing yourself to someone else or to your past self (something that I’m super guilty of), and then trying to do too much, or getting frustrated and giving up on whatever your goal happens to be. You’ve got this. I believe in you. Which is also a good “note to self”. πŸ™‚

Ice Ice Baby

Yesterday the high was 51 degrees and my backyard was a huge, gross, muddy mess. Which means my dogs turned into nasty mud monsters, and were literally covered head to toe in mud. Fun times. πŸ˜‰

You can’t really tell in the photo, but trust me Finn (pictured here) and Dean are so bad that they’ve been sleeping in the computer room to keep mud out of our bedroom. Lily doesn’t spend as much time outside as them, so she’s not really that bad. πŸ™‚

This morning when I woke up, it was pouring down rain, which gradually turned into snow/ice. Ah the joy’s of living in the Midwest haha. But on the bright side, all of the mud in my backyard is frozen, so at least that’s something.

Now, I know it sounds like I’m complaining but I’m kinda not hahaha. Well, I am complaining about the mud, but that’s beside the point. πŸ˜‰ But if you’ve been following me for a while now you probably know that I’m actually a big fan of winter weather. But the problem is ice tends to be a little more dangerous than snow. So with that in mind I tried to get out and get a run done before the rain really turned into ice and before the roads started to freeze over. I was not successful haha.

I also realized that most of my winter running gear is super dark. That’s not really a big deal if it’s sunny and clear out, but it was super grey and rainy/icy today. So I had to wear my blaze orange hat over my winter hat. Haha I’m probablyΒ  the coolest runner you”ll see today. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, after I got geared up I spent 10 minutes on my stationary bike just to warm up a little bit, got out the door and immediately slipped on the ice on my front porch. That was when I knew I was in for an interesting run! If you can really call it a run that is! I spent most of my time slipping and sliding all over the place, walking over really icy spots, and stopping for cars. Haha it was kinda fun though, battling the ice and eventually the crazy gusts of wind. AlthoughΒ  thanks to the wind a basketball hoop that’s at the end of a street and therefore right next to the road almost fell right on top of me. That could have been bad. Luckily I got out of the way in time. πŸ™‚ And the whole time I was out there the temperture kept dropping and the road just got worse and worse, so by the time I made it to my driveway I called it good and quit, instead of making a point to hit exactly 4 miles like I usually would. Haha but I mean, that’s close enough. πŸ˜‰

After my run I warmed up with some coffee, quickly cleaned my bathroom, and then warmed up even more with a nice, hot shower. I swear nothing beats a really hot shower after a cold, wet run. It felt amazing. πŸ™‚ After that I enjoyed a delicious bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, and now here we are! Feeling like a total bad ass for braving the ice, cold, and wind. Super cozy in a pair of fuzzy socks and my Longview Half hoodie. And just feeling all together awesome. Today is a good day. πŸ™‚

Weekly Recap: January 1st-7th, 2018

Welp, the new year has kinda gotten off to a rough start for me. I’ve been sick (again πŸ˜‘) and unable to do much running. Mostly because we’ve been stuck in single/negative temperatures and attempting to run in that with a sore throat is pretty freaking miserable. So I’ve mostly been focusing on rest this week, which is probably exactly what I need after all of the craziness, running around, alcohol, and super late nights that our Christmas adventures brought last week. But resting has been kinda nice. Luke took most of this week off from work, so we’ve been hanging out, playing video games, and cooking a few things from Run Fast Eat Slow. So that’s been fun!

Not gonna lie, watching everyone else getting to work on their goals for the new year has been a little bit torturous. I’ve got big goals that I want to start working on too! πŸ˜‚ But first I gotta get over this illness…

Monday (New Year’s Day):

  • 2 miles

I attempted to get a decent run in on Monday. But like I said, the super cold temps were not mixing well with my sore throat, so I had to call it at 2 miles. Haha I probably shouldn’t have even done that, but oh well. πŸ˜‰

Tuesday:

  • Β Rest Day

Yeah, I woke up feeling even worse on Tuesday. Basically conferming the fact that I should have not run on Monday. But I mean, I had to start off 2018 with a run! πŸ˜‰ Anyway, Luke and I spent most of Tuesday at home, doing a whole lot of nothing, which is probably what I needed. I also spent a lot of time drinking apple cider vinegar and raw honey in warm water, because it’s good for colds/sore throats.

Wednesday:Β 

  • Walked around the dog park

Started to feel a little bit better on Wednesday! Plus it was a little bit warmer (and by that I mean it was in the 20’s πŸ˜‰ ), so we took the dogs to the park so they could run around a little bit. And then for dinner we made the herb chicken, and miso soup from Run Fast Eat Slow! Haha I had to make a few changes to the soup; I couldn’t find any red miso at the store so I used white, and I used some nori sheets I had instead of having to buy wakame. It still ended up tasting really good though! I added some soba noodles and it ended up being the perfect dinner on a cold winter’s night. Oh and the chicken turned out really well too!! I just don’t have a photo of it. πŸ˜‰

Thursday:

  • Rest Day

My throat was still sore on Thursday, but I was starting to feel like I was finally starting to get well again. I wonder if my delicious soup had something to do with that? πŸ˜‰ I didn’t want to push it though, so no running. But I did make some of the superhero muffins from Run Fast Eat Slow. Those turned out really well!!!

Friday:

  • 3 miles

Was feeling much better by Friday, so I decided to get a nice 3 miler done. It was about 18 degrees out and by the end of it my throat was starting to hurt a little bit again. But when I was about a mile in some guy wearing a veteran hat, while walking a Chihuahua that was wearing a pink sweater called me tough. So I mean, that was great. πŸ™‚

Saturday:

  • Easy peasy 20 minute run (1.5 miles)
  • 10 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 20 minutes of yoga

Still sniffling and sneezing on Saturday, but as a whole I was feeling a lot better! Haha tired, but better. πŸ™‚ Almost didn’t run though. Like I said, I was tired, and it was still pretty cold out and I was worried about my throat starting to hurt again…But when I checked the weather I saw that we were supposed to get some freezing rain on Sunday, so I decided I needed to get a short run in since I probably wouldn’t be able to the next day. I’m glad I did it. πŸ™‚

Sunday:

  • Rest Day

Basically just trying to get back into my usual scheduled, which means taking Sunday as a rest day. πŸ™‚ The freezing rain actually just turned out to be a really really cold rain, so the roads weren’t at all bad like I was worried they’d end up being. So I ended up taking all of the dogs for walks in the rain. Haha not like they mind! Probably not the best decision for me, since I’m attempting to get over this cold, but I love me some rainy weather!! πŸ™‚

So yeah, it’s definitely been an interesting week haha. Glad I’m finallly feeling better and I’m super excited to really get started on my goals for this month and this year!

Christmas Was A Success!!

A crazy, hectic, busy, couple of days, but a definite success!!

Luke, the dogs, and I were only in Illinois for about 3 and 1/2 days, but we still managed to go everywhere we needed to go, saw everyone we needed to see, went to most of the Christmas parties we’d been invited too, gave and received gifts, ate lots of yummy food, drank a little too much ;), stayed up waaaay too late, and had lots and lots of fun. πŸ™‚Β Honestly, I couldn’t actually re-cap everything that went down in Illinois in the correct order because it’s all kind of a blur haha, but I suppose I’m gonna try!

I got to see my sister and her husband a little bit which was nice. I haven’t seen them in a while!! And I got to hang out with my brother for a little bit too! All three of them left to go home to Colorado the day before Luke and I did. My mom bought a puppy from someone in Illinois, so they brought her back to my mom. She’s a cute little thing, a tea cup Yorkie, but I honestly would never recommend buying a tea cup dog (they tend to have health issues. Intentionally breeding dogs to be super duper small isn’t exactly a good thing). But anyway, my sister has an Alaskan husky (which is a Siberian husky mixed with a grey hound) and a huge German Shepard, so I’m not sure how that 11 hour drive went for them with such a tiny dog in the car, but they somehow made it. πŸ™‚

My mom’s new puppy. I may not agree with the whole tea cup dog thing, but I definitely wasn’t going to say no to cuddling with a puppy!

On Christmas day Luke and I spent the day driving around everywhere. We Opened presents from Santa in the morning (apparently Santa knows I like Nike running gear and needed a new pair of fleece leggings πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰ ). Then we went to Luke’s grandma Becky’s party. All of Luke’s uncles, aunts and cousins always spend the afternoon there and that’s always fun. Since there are only 2 really little kids on this side of the family a lot of suggestive joking was done this year. We also got a little talk about the bird and the bees. That was a blast and Luke’s grandma thought it was hilarious. And every year, after we eat lunch Santa shows up to hand out more gifts! Luke’s grandpa never seems to be around when Santa shows up though. I guess our big Christmas lunch makes him tired. πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰

That night Finn and I stayed at my grandma’s house and Luke, Lily, and Dean stayed at his dad’s. So I spent the night hanging out with my grandma and attempting to make Finn get along with my uncle’s dog, Luther. At first Finn was afraid of him, but once he realized he could bully him he stopped freaking out around him. Poor Luther, all he wanted to do was play with Finn. They’re about the same age and Luther was super exited to have a friend. Finn on the other hand, is a border collie, mostly wants to work, and doesn’t know how to play like a normal dog. And I mean, he did kinda play with him, but he spent most of his time bossing him around and stealing his toys. Ah, the joy’s of border collie ownership. πŸ˜‰

Luther is a good boy.

The day after Christmas Luke picked me and Finn up from my grandma’s, then we went back to his dads, packed up the car, and had every intention of heading back home. But it was snowing, the roads were gross, and our car’s heater doesn’t work, so we decided to spend another day in Illinois. Not gonna lie, it was kind of a boring day. Since it was so cold out (it was in the single digits for most of the day) everyone just wanted to stay inside and play video games. Now, I enjoy playing video games, but I can’t stare at a screen ALL DAY. Plus I like the cold and the snow, so I wouldn’t have minded playing outside haha, but oh well.

That evening/night/early morning (because we ended up staying up until 3 am haha) was fun though! We all went out for dinner at a Mexican restaurant that was really good! They had really good margaritas haha. Then Luke, one of his brothers, and I went to Target, bought Cards Against Humanity, and ended up playing that for a while. And of course more alcohol was involved with that. Eventually Luke’s dad joined us and really got into the game. We ended up playing through all of the black question cards twice, and that’s how we ended up staying up until 3 am haha.

And then the next day (yesterday) the roads were clear, but it was still super cold (-2 in the morning…), so we bundled up and spent 5 hours in the car to drive home. That was slightly miserable since our car has no heat. But we had a mini heater thing, so we took turns holding that under our blankets to warm up. And we finally made it home alive, but very cold, around 3 pm yesterday.

Whew! I think that just about covers it! I didn’t bring any running gear/shoes with me because I didn’t think I’d have time to run. And I really didn’t until Wednesday I really didn’t! I did get some new running tights and a pull over jacket for Christmas, it wasn’t really enough for braving the super cold temps that day, but don’t think I didn’t consider just braving the cold in what I had and running in only socks (something that I’ve done before) because I was soooo bored with all of the video game playing haha. But I decided that I probably shouldn’t have braved the -2 degree temperatures in nothing but one pair of fleece leggings and a jacket. πŸ˜‰

But anyways, it’s still super cold out today! But since I’m home and have access to all of my running gear I’m gonna go get in a few miles!

Weekly Recap: December 11th-17th, 2017

Monday:

  • 1.5 miles

Ugh, by Monday I was starting to feel really tired. I was still kind of in denial about why though, so I did 1.5 miles to keep the streak alive.

Tuesday:

  • 1 mile

On Tuesday I made the very poor decision of putting spinach in my smoothie. That was a really bad idea and I explain all of that here. πŸ˜‰ I spent most of Tuesday morning stuck on the couch with stomach cramps and the only relife I could get was from a REALLY hot heat pack. I’ve still got a few red marks on my stomach haha. But I still got in a mile!

Wednesday:Β 

  • 2 miles
  • 30 Day Shred Day 5
  • 10 minutes of yoga
  • 40 minutes on the stationary bike

By Wednesday I was getting really frustrated. I couldn’t run as far as I wanted. As I knew I could! I was tired, I sore, and upset. It seemed like nothing was helping my tired legs and I was beginning to think that my streaking days might be over.

Thursday: The Day My Streak Died

  • Rest Day

On Thursday I woke up and I knew it was over. I had gotten a full 8 hours of sleep but I woke up exhausted. I was sore in places that I didn’t think I should be sore in and I could barely bring myself to get out of bed, let alone trying to run. So I knew I had to quite. My streak had ended at 21 days and I wasn’t even upset. I was relieved.

Friday:

  • Rest Day

Holy cow! What a difference one day of doing nothing made! I woke up feeling so much better! I was less tired and sore and felt a lot better all around. Ending my streak was definitely the right move. I’m thinking a little break from running is in order, and another rest day was as well. πŸ™‚

Saturday:Β 

  • Rest Day

Literally did nothing exciting on Saturday haha.

Sunday:

  • Rest day

Basically a repeat of Saturday haha. I’ve been very much enjoying my little break from running and pretty much everything else. I also don’t feel so tired and gross anymore, so that’s a huge plus!!

I Believe My Streaking Days Have Come To An End

And like, 2 days after my optimistic and yet slightly delusional “half way there” post. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

But oh man, this morning I woke up feeling pretty miserable. I mean, I was just so exhausted that I legit woke up at 7 am and just sat on my couch doing nothing for 2 hours. At that point I decided I should probably do a little bit of soul searching, take inventory of my body and mind, and decide if this is something I should even continue do.

After doing a little bit of thinking, I realized I’ve kinda been tired for a while. I’ve also felt sore and achy in some places I normally wouldn’t considering what I’ve been doing. I’ve been constantly hungry and look like I might have gained some weight (although I think most of that just might be water retention).I feel like I might be coming down with a cold. I haven’t been sleeping well and for the last week or two I haven’t really been able to run more than 3 miles. Sounds kinda like symptoms of over-training, right? Haha yeah, well my stubborn ass didn’t realize that until this morning. And even then (and now) I was kind of unsure about whether or not I actually need a break from running, or if this is something I should continue to work through. Especially since I really haven’t done all that much running over the last two weeks. But after I decided that I was going to take a short break from running I didn’t even feel upset or disappointed about ending the streak. I felt relived. And that pretty much told me everything I needed to know. πŸ˜‰

So did I learn anything during this crazy streaking adventure? As a matter of fact I did! I learned to push through physical discomfort in a way that I hadn’t before (and what kind I should and shouldn’t try to run through πŸ˜‰ ). I learned not to use long, busy days as an excuse not to run. I learned that cross training really helps with recovery and soreness and my legs actually felt a lot better the day after I did it. And possibly most importantly, I’ve learned that, at least at this point in my running career, that streaking is not for me haha. I need at least a day or 2 off from running every week in order to recover and be able to function properly. πŸ˜‰

So now it’s time for a break! A break from running, tracking food, workout scheduled, and goals! I kind of already did that in November after my half marathon, but now seems like a good time to do it again. Especially with all of the holiday festivities going on. πŸ™‚ I do need to figure out and come up with goals I want to work towards in 2018, but I’ll worry about all of that later.

Haha oh man, my hair’s been on quite the journey this year! It started out the year super long and natural colored, with my signature blonde streak. Then I cut it super short. Then I dyed it black. And now it’s more medium length hahah. Oh yeah, and I did some running stuff too. πŸ˜‰ Funny how a photo from my half marathon last year made it into my top 9, but one from this year didn’t haha. Probably because I looked much happier to be at mile 11 last year than I did this year. Seriously though, lets compare…

Mile 11 of the Longview Half Marathon, 2015, 2016, and 2017. Let’s play a fun game called “guess which years I was having fun and which year I was not!” I like to think it’s pretty obvious. πŸ˜‰ But I’ve finished that damn half 3 years in a row and I plan on continuing to do so! At least I’ve managed to keep that streak alive and will hopefully be able to continue to for years to come. πŸ™‚

Well that was a fun little trip down memory lane, but I think I’m done for today. I have a full day of doing absolutely nothing in front of me and I plan on taking full advantage of it!
