New Job Who Dis?

Whoop woop!!

A week after I quit my job working at the cat litter factory I got not one but TWO job interviews! Both for house keeping positions at assisted living facilities. Not anything fancy, but a jobs a job! Especially when your options are incredibly limited due to several factors (we’re a one vehicle house hold {which is the BIGGEST issue I’ve been having}, not having a college degree, not having the “necessary” experience, etc.).

Anyway, the first interview I had was weird. Like, they didn’t ask me anything outside of my previous job history. The whole interview lasted about 10 minutes. It was weird and I kinda figured I wasn’t going to hear back from that particular establishment. So that I I applied to a few more jobs and like, 15 minutes after I submitted my resume to the assisted living facility that is right here in my town (it’s exactly 1/2 a mile from my house πŸ˜‰) I got a call from them wanting to set up an interview and I ended up going in for one the next day.

That interview was much more what you’d expect from a job interview! We actually talked about the job, the woman conducting the interview asked typical questions, things like that. I thought that one went FANTASTIC but after telling Luke everything that happened he was convinced that I “flubbed” it. And his opinion was the same about the other interview as well. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Hahaha obviously he was wrong though because I got a job offer from the assisted living facility in my town the day after I interviewed. Then a few days later I got a call back from the first assisted living facility that I interviewed with. πŸ˜‚

So this week I’ve had to go in a few times for orientation and things like that, but I officially start tomorrow!! I’m kinda nervous. Starting a new job and having to learn the ropes of how they do things at any particular establishment is always a little nerve wracking I think, but I’m also pretty excited! Everyone there is super nice and apparently they’re all really close which I love!

And several of the residents there have already taken a liking too me! One gentleman named Bob and I had a lovely conversation about the weather and baseball on the day had my interview. So when I ended up walking away with the woman who was interviewing me she said “well obviously you can interact with the residents!” That was probably the best first impression I could have made! But honestly you guys I just love hanging out with elderly people. I’m literally friends with a whole bunch of elderly people who live in my neighborhood that I see all of the time when I run!

Another resident like my boots (I got a pair of purple Docs for my birthday and EVERYONE loves them πŸ˜‰) and he asked if I was a skater. That made me smile! Apparently he used to teach 8th grade and is on the up and up with that kinda thing.

My birthday boots! I am in LOVE! πŸ’œ

Then one of the days I had to go back Bob recognized me right away and was very happy to see me. We didn’t get to talk much but it makes me super happy that I’m already making friends there.

So the residents and the staff all seem super cool! The director of the place said I was going to fit in there perfectly with my bubbly personality which was good to hear. And one of the guys who works in the kitchen has run a 5k in our town that I did too! Hahaha I was wearing the race shirt from it so he asked me about it. Apparently it the only 5k he’s ever done, but still, meeting another potential runner is a super exciting prospect!

So yeah, all and all I’m pretty excited about this job! I think things are going to go much better for me there than they did at the cat litter factory. No more coming home looking like this…

Anyway, I just wanted to share that little update. I’ll let you guys know how everything goes with the new job!

I’m also going to get back to writing weekly recaps! I’m not sure of anyone actually cares what my week look like, but it helps keep me accountable. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚ And speaking of accountability, there are some other things I’m going to be talking about here to hopefully hold myself accountable in other regards.

But I’ll get to all of that later. For now I hope everyone has a super Sunday!

Until next time; your recently turned 28 friend, totally punk rock, new job having, cold weather loving, runner friend,

Weekly Recap: March 4th-10th, 2019

Well this week Sure didn’t go as planned! But that’s life for you, isn’t it? Not everything goes as planned all of the time, and that’s ok! Shit happens.

This week my shit was getting sick. Nothing too bad though. I just had to take a few days off from running. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but I was a little bit bummed because I was on a huge roll with my running. But oh well. My body needed some extra rest so that’s what I gave it. 😊

Monday:

  • 3 treadmill miles
  • 30 minutes of yoga

Oh man, this was a tough one! For some reason I felt heavy and stuff on Monday. Probably because I absolutely KILLED it last week! Like, wow. I’m very happy with what I accomplished. 😊

Anyway, doing this run on the treadmill also didn’t help. But the real feel temps were around -15 that morning and o really didn’t want to deal with that. I love the winter you guys, but at this point even I’m looking forward to it ending! This crazy cold hasn’t exactly been fun! I’m super grateful that I have a treadmill though and have been able to get all my miles in because of it! 😁

Tuesday:

  • 1 hour on the stationary bike
  • 30 minutes of yoga

I was still feeling stiff and heavy on Tuesday. I was hoping my easy slog on the treadmill the day before would have helped, but no dice. So I skipped my planned run and spent some time on my stationary bike, hoping that would flush my legs out a little bit. That plus a little bit of yoga. It felt really good. 😊

Wednesday:

  • Rest Day

Woke up sick. Yuck. But at least I know why I’ve felt off all week! πŸ˜‰ Took the day off and spent most of my time binge watching Law and Order: SVU. I’m not exactly stoked to be missing out on a few days of running. Especially since I’ve been absolutely killing it lately and have been running more consistently than I ever have before. But I know that right now my body needs rest, so rest I shall!

Thursday:

  • 15 minutes of yoga

Still not feeling very well on Thursday. So I took another rest day, although I did do a little bit of yoga. A nice little “yoga for when you are sick” routine by Yoga With Adriene. She is my all time favorite yoga YouTuber. She literally has a yoga routine for EVERYTHING and she’s just an amazing human being. If you’re looking to start an at home yoga practice you should definitely check her out!

Friday:

  • 3 miles

I was definitely starting to feel better by Friday!! Went out for a nice and easy 3 mile run. It went well. 😊 Hahaha Running definitely helped clear out some of the snot out of me. πŸ˜‚

Saturday:

  • 6 miles
  • 30 minutes of yoga

Plan “A” for Saturday was to run 10 miles. Plan “B” was to run whatever my body could handle. Turns out, that was only 6 miles. But hey, I’ll take it! I was definitely feeling better, but still getting over being sick and I knew that there was a very good possibility that actually completing my long run was a bit of a longshot.

It’s all good though! I’m just glad that I got out and got something done! Even if I didn’t exactly feel great doing it.

Sunday:

  • Rest day

I forgot about daylight savings time until yesterday evening. πŸ˜‚ Oh well, while the adjustment of “springing forward” is a little bit weird at first, it’s not too terrible.

Anyway, I thought about getting in a few easy miles or something today since I missed so many days this week, but I eventually decided against it. I’m trying to hold fast on the Sunday rest day thing. Taking Sunday’s off helps me go into a new week of training feeling rested and rejuvenated physically and mentally. 😊 So here’s hoping next week goes better than this one did!

Total Weekly Mileage: 12

Obviously this wasn’t a great week. 12 miles in a week is no where near what I’ve been running, but still, I’ll take it. I got sick and I needed to rest. And honestly I think all of that rest helped me to get over my cold faster than I would have if I had just tried to push through it. I’ve learned so much about listening to my body over the past several years and I really think that’s all starting to pay off!

Anyway, I hope to be back at it again in full force next week!

Happy Sunday everyone!

February Miles and Goal Check In

Happy last day of February, friends!

It’s looking like winter is still going to be hanging around for a while! We’re getting another bout of super cold weather.

Anyway, February ended up being a good month for me running-wise! Like, really good! It has been a LONG time since I’ve felt really good running. That I’ve felt a sort of freedom and joy that only running could bring me. I’m talking years here, people. Looking back, 2017 and 2018 were just a huge struggle for me in this department. Sure, there were a few moments when running felt really good or really fun in those two years, but for the most part they were kind of a miserable grind. Like, no matter what I did I was just stuck in the same place and it was just getting increasingly more frustrating!

That all changed about two weeks ago though. Something just kinda clicked in place and now I’m experiencing that joy and freedom again. I haven’t had this much fun or felt this freaking good while running in two years! So I’m pretty excited right now! I’m just out there crushing workouts and having an absolute blast doing it!

Unfortunately my run today didn’t exactly fit into the super duper fun category. Like I said, we’re experiencing more super cold weather, so I took to the treadmill for my last run in February. It wasn’t all that exciting, but I still felt pretty good doing it! And that brings me to 85.65 miles run in February! That’s almost 16 more miles than last month! And January was longer than this month hahaha. πŸ˜‰ So I’m pretty happy about that. 😊

Alrighty! Onto goals goals goals! So this year I’m working on being a stronger, more well rounded athlete, and honestly that’s probably why I’m feeling so great in my running all of a sudden! πŸ˜‰ I’ve been making a point to get in at the very least one 30 minute strength training session in a week. I know it’s not a lot, but it’s more than I was doing for a while! I’ve been kinda slacking on the specific workout that I had planned on doing every Thursday, but I have been sticking with doing Pilates and I’ll gladly take it! πŸ™‚

I haven’t been doing super great about eating better. There’s still a bunch of junk that I could cut out of my diet and I definitely need to add in more vegetables. I gained about 5 pounds over the holidays and I still haven’t been able to shake that. So there’s something I really need to work on.

I’ve also been kinda slacking on getting yoga, stretching, and foam rolling done. And I can really feel it! I’m definitely more stiff and tight! But right here, right now, I’m commenting to getting back into the habit of stretching and foam rolling! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ˜Š

Lets see what else….oh yes, steps and journaling!

So, between the crazy cold and having more dental work done this month, so hitting my step goals has gone to the wayside several times. Honestly I like having this goal because it gives me motivation to get up and moving throughout the day, but I’m also pretty glad that I don’t super obsess over it. I’ve gotten close on some of those red days, but didn’t hit it and that’s been ok with me. 😁

And last but not least, I’ve been keeping up with my training journal! Yay me!! 😊

So this month has been really good in some areas! I’ve definitely got some things to work on, but all in all I’m just happy that my running has been so great! πŸ˜‚ Here’s hoping it stays that way! I’m thinking it will. I’m also thinking that 2019 is going to end up being a great year for me as it pertains to running. 😁

Wishing everyone a very happy March!

Weekly Recap: February 18th-24th, 2019

Well this week sure was interesting!!

Luke and I kicked it off by his office building having an electrical fire and me getting a root canal. Fun times, man. Fun times. 🀣 Luckily no one was hurt in the fire, and the engineering firm Luke works for got their shit together very quickly and everyone was back to work in just a few days. And my root canal went well. It’s healing and that’s just one more of my shitty teeth that’s getting taken care of. πŸ™‚

So yeah, it wasn’t a bad week. Just an interesting one!

Monday:

  • Rest day

Monday was the day the root canal and office fire went down. You can read all about that here, if it suits your fancy. 😊

So since I got my mouth drilled on and was told to take it easy for the rest of the day I did not run. Or do much of anything else when we got home from the dentist’s/a little bit of shopping. πŸ˜‚ It was nice though because Luke was home so we got to hang out and be couch potato’s together.

Tuesday:

  • 2 miles

On Tuesday Luke went to his work to pick up his laptop, just incase they ended up being out of work for a while. While he was gone I ran two easy-ish miles. They felt pretty good and I might have pushed up a small hill a little too hard. Hence me not really wanting to call this an easy run even though that’s what it was supposed to be. πŸ˜‚

Wednesday:

  • 5 mile fartlek

Holy cow my legs were sore!!! And I’m not sure why? Running on slippery snow last Saturday? That doesn’t seem to likely… Sitting in a dentists chair for like 40 minutes? Maybe? Charging up a small hill the day before? I seriously doubt it. I can’t emphasis enough how small of a hill it was… Haha oh well. It is what it is.

Despite my sore legs this run ended up being AMAZING! There was snow. There was ice. And there was lots and lots of slush! What’s not to love?!? Hahaha this ended up turning into a 5 mile fartlek and I had a ridiculous amount of fun doing it! I’d have to slow down on the slush and snow, walk over ice every once in a while, but once my feet found solid ground I would take off and run as fast as I wanted to until I hit another patch of snow. It was great. Sometimes the weather conditions create the perfect workout for you. 😊

Thursday:

  • 3 miles
  • 30 minutes of Pilates

Luke went back to work on Thursday. Honestly it’s really good that the company is up and running again after the fire, but I was hoping he’d get a couple of more days off because I was enjoying spending so much extra time with him. πŸ˜‚

Anyway, I woke up stiff, sore, and tired Thursday morning. Doing speed…I was gonna say work but really it didn’t feel like work. I guess I’ll go with play since that’s basically what “fartlek” means anyway. πŸ˜‰ So speed play on snow, ice, and slush will do that to a person. No regrets though! It was just too much fun.

So Thursday was spent doing 3 easy miles. Hahaha I kinda overdressed for this run though. There was snow on the ground but that was super deceiving. It was actually kinda warm out. πŸ˜‚

Friday:

  • 2 miles

Nothing too exciting or fancy on Friday. Just two easy miles to get the legs moving. They needed it after Thursday! The Pilates workout I did was no joke! πŸ™‚

Saturday:

  • 8 miles

It was cold, windy, and rainy Saturday morning! I often get asked what I do when it rains, in regards to running. My answer; I get wet. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, my 8 miler went alright. My legs were still feeling a little bit tired and batting the wind wasn’t exactly fun, but other than that I can’t complain. It wasn’t the best long run, but it certainly wasn’t the worst! πŸ˜„

Sunday:

  • Rest day

Yay! Another well earned day off!! 😊

Spent my Sunday bleaching/dyeing my hair. Typical Sunday for me. πŸ˜‰ Hair stuff and more Law and Order: SVU. It was nice.

Total Weekly Mileage: 20

I’ve been really consistent with hitting 20 miles every week for about a month now. I believe it’s time to start upping my mileage again! Feeling good and ready to take on my upcoming 10k in April! πŸ’ͺπŸ»πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Happy Sunday!

~Ashley

Weekly Recap: February 4th-10th

Not gonna lie, this week was kind of exhausting! But like, exhausting in the best possible way!!! I’m finally feeling like I’m making some progress and getting more fit!! I’d totally be lying if I said I’ve been being patient about the whole process and I may or may not have spent some time staring at my training log wanting to cry out of frustration, but I’ve kept grinding on and putting in the work. Even when it was hard, I felt ridiculously slow, or like I was getting absolutely nowhere.

But I’m super duper excited to report that all of that work is paying of and I definitely felt it this week! And maybe I ended up going a little too hard two days in a row which lead me to skip the big strength workout I’ve been doing on Thursday’s. πŸ˜‚ That’s ok though. I’m still super happy with what I’ve accomplished this week and I’m so stoked about how strong I’ve felt!! πŸ’ͺ🏻That strength is definitely going to come in handy for the trail 10k my dad and I are doing in Colorado in April!

Monday:

  • 2 miles

I kinda really didn’t want to run on Monday. I just wasn’t feeling it…But I went out and did a couple of miles anyway! Hahaha they actually ended up being kinda speedy too, because I really just wanted to get this run over with. πŸ˜‚

Tuesday:

  • 3 miles, hill repeats
  • 25 minutes of yoga

Hit the treadmill for this one! There are a few hills nearby that I can do a pretty decent hill workout on, but honestly it’s just a lot easier to get one done on the treadmill. This ended up being a FANTASTIC workout!! It was hard, but I felt strong! πŸ’ͺ🏻 I’m definitely seeing some improvements in my running already and I’m pretty freaking stoked! 😊

Wednesday:

  • 4 treadmill miles

Hahahaha ok, so I actually started out this run outside! But it had been kinda rainy, icy, and misty since Tuesday and the roads were SUPER slick. Even after being salted. I made it a whopping .3 miles before I had to turn around and try to walk home without dying. πŸ˜‚

After my failed attempt at running outside I changed and then hopped on the treadmill for 4 more miles. 4 pretty solid possibly a little too fast miles? I mean, I felt really good doing them, it’s just that I probably shouldn’t have gone so hard at it the day after that hill workout. Oops.

Anyway, technically I guess I really ran 4.3 miles on Wednesday, if you count the slipping/sliding I did outside as actual running. Yeah, I’m gonna count it. πŸ˜‰

It doesn’t look too icy in this photo, but I could barely find any solid footing!!

Thursday:

  • 25 minutes of yoga

Yeah, I definitely went too hard on Wednesday. I woke up feeling exhausted on Thursday and I just knew I needed to take it easy. Luckily at this point Thursday is not a running day for me so I didn’t miss out on any miles, but I didn’t end up doing the strength workout that I’ve been doing. Kinda bummed that I missed out on that since I know that’s been a big part of the improvement that I’m feeling this week, but I also knew that I really just needed a day off from really hard stuff. I stuck to some mostly easy yoga, but there was a little bit of ab work and a few other strengthening poses thrown in there. 😊

Friday:

  • 3 treadmill miles

So Thursday night well into Thursday morning we had a crazy ice storm! Like, there was rain, sleet, a little bit of snow, and lots of thunder and lightning! It was nuts! So obviously the roads were pretty shitty on Friday. So I had to do my run on the treadmill. Not a fan, but at least I got it done!

Also, can we just talk about how crazy the weather has been this winter?!?

Saturday:

  • 8 miles

Cold and still kinda icy out on Saturday, but I still got my long run done! It was a slow one. I had to pick my way around ice and get hope out of the way of cars also trying to navigate the ice. I even had to stop a couple of times for cars. But I made it through without any incidents or close calls, so I’ll take it! πŸ˜„

Sunday:

  • Rest day

Oh man I’ve been looking forward to this rest day!! I’ve had a fantastic week and I’m feeling like I’ve made some good progress with my running, but oh boy I needed a day off. πŸ˜‚

I spent most of my day glued to my couch, binge watching Law and Order: SVU. Hahaha is forgotten how good the older episodes were and got sucked in pretty quickly. That and a couple of fetch breaks. It was a good day. 😊

Total Weekly Mileage: 20.33

I am so proud of what I’ve accomplished this week! Not only did I hit my mileage goal for the week, but I got in some pretty fantastic workouts! It was a good week and I’m hoping next week will go just as well!

I’m about 2 months I’ll be traveling to Colorado to do a trail 10k with my dad. The elevation change from going from Kansas to near the mountains in Colorado gets me every time. This 10k is going to be hard, but I also think I’m gonna be ready for it!! Then in May my dad is coming here to run a 5k with me! We’re gonna have a couple of fun times together. 😁

Anyway, that was my week! Check back in tomorrow! I’ve got some exciting stuff to announce!!

Until then,

~Ashley

Weekly Recap: January 28th – February 3rd, 2019

Soooooo this was a really weird week. One day it was super duper cold and the next it was in the mid 50’s. The high for today (Sunday) is 61 degrees, and then on Monday it’s supposed to drop back down into the 30’s and with a chance of snow. Yeah, the entire Midwest is just experiencing some crazy weather right now.

Punxsutawney Phil says we’re going to have an early spring and he’s kinda right. We’ve had spring and winter all within the span of one week! Weird stuff, man. πŸ˜‰

Monday:

  • 3 treadmill miles

Last Sunday I though that I might be getting sick, but after a good night’s sleep I woke up with a runny nose but that was it. Other than that I felt fine! So yet again I’ve avoided being taken down by the cold and flu season! πŸ˜‚

Anyway, on Monday we were experiencing wind gusts of up to 50 mph. Wind is probably my least favorite weather condition to contend with and I didn’t feel like putting up with it on Monday, so I took my interval workout to the treadmill instead.

Tuesday:

  • 4 miles

Tuesday was a gorgeous and cold day out! So obviously I couldn’t miss out on running outside! It was still a little bit windy but definitely not as bad as Monday. Legs felt a little tired, but other than that this run was great! 😊

Wednesday:

  • 45 minutes of strength training

More below 0 temps on Wednesday. So I decided to switch around a running day with my strength focused day in hopes to avoid another run on the treadmill. That didn’t end up happening, but anyway, this was a really good workout. 😁

Thursday:

  • 3 treadmill miles
  • 35 minutes of stretching/foam rolling

It was a little bit warmer on Thursday. It felt like -1 when I wanted to go out and run. πŸ˜‚ But the night before I washed all of my cold weather running gear without really thinking about it so it was still wet on Thursday morning (I don’t run my running gear through the dryer. It lasts longer that way). So that meant another treadmill run for me. It wasn’t a bad run or anything. I would have just rather been outside. πŸ˜‰

I definitely rocked out to the PokΓ©mon theme song during this run. πŸ˜‚

Friday:

  • 2 miles

Luke and I were super duper busy on Friday! We had to go grocery shopping, run errands, pick up birthday gifts for our niece and nephew (their birthdays are like a week a part), we went to the mall to get treats for ourselves, and Lily had yo go to the vet. We were gone from about 8:30 am until around 4 pm with only a quick stop at home to drop off and put away our groceries.

I still managed to squeeze in a quick little 2 mile run. It was too nice outside not too!! 😁

I don’t have a photo from this run, so here’s a photo of the belly button ring I got at Hot Topic on Friday instead. 😁

Saturday:

  • 8 miles

Another relatively nice day out! It was foggy and a little bit drizzly out which of course I love!

But this run was one long mental battle from the very start. My head just wasn’t in the game on Saturday. I had to mentally break this run up into little chunks just to get through it all. But mission accomplished! I had set out to do 8 miles and that’s exactly what I did! 😁

Sunday

  • rest day

Ah, a very well deserved rest day!! 😊 Spent most of my day just hanging out at home and reading.

This evening Luke and I are going to my Brother-in-law’s girlfriend’s apartment to watch the Super Bowl and to celebrate her kid’s birthdays. So it should be an interesting night.

Total Weekly Mileage: 20

Now that’s more like it!! I finally hit a weekly mileage that I’m super happy with! Now the plan is to stick around 20 miles for the next several weeks and then build up a little bit more, rinse, and repeat!

Oh man, I sure think this is gonna be a really good year of running for me! Well, I sure hope so anyway! πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚

Wishing you a very happy Sunday! Stay safe out there tonight!

~Ashley
