Half Marathon Training W1D3

Oh man, this morning was rough!

Luke plays softball on his company’s league on Tuesday’s. They’re always double headers and each game lasts about an hour. Which is no big deal. But last night his first game started at 8:30 pm, so we were at the softball fields until 10:30 and didn’t get to bed until well after 11 that night. That’s really not that big of an issue. I just turn into a big baby when I don’t get enough sleep, and I’m still getting up earlier than usual to beat the summer heat.

Plus I’m just feeling kinda worn out from my runs on Monday and Tuesday. But I knew that was coming and that this week would be kinda tough. I’m hoping if I just stick it out that next week will be better. It anyway, getting out of bed this morning was hard. Eating breakfast and getting dressed was hard. Stepping out the door and starting my Garmin was hard. But after that things got considerably easier. 😉

The plan for today was 5 easy miles and that’s what I did! Nothing all too exciting to report from this run either, but honestly that’s not a bad thing! I’d rather have a decent, uneventful run, than a bad, exciting run haha. But this run did get my blood moving, my muscles working, and woke me up a little, which I definitely needed! So far this week I’ve felt tired before my runs and then awake and energized afterwards, so that’s been a nice little bonus. 🙂

Oh and during today’s run I notice that my legs are looking more and more like “runner’s” legs. They’re definitely getting slimmer, more muscle definition, and my quads are getting pretty big! I wish I would have thought to take a “before” photo of them, because obviously I can see the changes, but otherwise it’s kind of hard to know that anythings different. But I’ll definitely be saving the photo above so I’ll have something to compare to if I notice any more changes. I know I’ve been getting stronger, but I just think it’s cool to actually be able to see the physical changes in my body. For many years I was very focused on just losing weight and nothing else. I didn’t care how strong I was, that I could run a half marathon, or that my body was capable of all sorts of amazing things. Now I’m not all too concerned about what the scale says and am more exciting to see and feel that I’m getting stronger, more capable, and hopefully more injury resistant haha. 😉

Anyway, who else runs for second breakfast?!? I know I sure do!! It’s like, 90% of the reason why I’m willing to wake up early and go run. #breakfastfoodisthebestfood 😉 Basically I’m just a hobbit. I’m always eating haha. I mean, I legit eat two breakfasts on most day’s that I run and its great. I usually also always have food on me. Last night before Luke’s softball games I was kind of upset that I had forgotten to wash my grapes earlier in the day, so the only snack I had out there at the softball fields for like 2 hours was a banana. That was a bummer and I was pretty hungry by the time we got home. And it’s not like I didn’t have a filling dinner or anything. I’m just always hungry. 😂

So after I was satisfied with my second breakfast I took Lily for a short little walk, watered the garden and picked some more tomatoes, along with a little watermelon. Then I did some laundry, loaded, ran, and unloaded the dishwasher, vacuumed and just picked up the house in general, and then finally showered, ate lunch, and then sat down to work on a few blog posts.

Later in the afternoon I did about 30 minutes of yoga, and holy cow I didn’t realize how tight I was until I did! Haha it was pretty bad! But at least I took the time to do something about it and I ended up feeling pretty great afterwards so yay for that! 🙂 After that I just kinda spent the rest of the afternoon hanging out and waiting for Luke to get home from work. He should be home in about half an hour and we might go out hunting for Pokemon when he does. 😉

But that’s all for now! I feel like I’ve had a very successful day half marathon training, but I’m pretty darn excited that tomorrow is a cross training day so I don’t have to get up early to run haha.

Happy hump day!!

Rest Day Ramblings

I am very very very glad that today was a rest day! I guess the combination of a new puppy, weird sleep scheduled, attempting to stick with my training plan, but not really being able to do as much recovery stuff as I’d like to has all caught up with me today. Well, yesterday actually. For my long run yesterday I wanted to go for 7-9 ish miles, but I quickly realized that wasn’t going to happen. So I went for 5 and called it good. 🙂 And it was pretty good. I felt tired and my legs didn’t want to move, but they weren’t bad miles by any means. I did, however, wake up with super sore legs and that kinda sucks, but oh well.

How pretty is my peach tree! I can’t wait for fresh peaches this summer!

Anyway, for the last two or three days, Finn’s been waking up and crying at around 1 in the morning. He doesn’t have to pee or anything, trust me I’ve tried. He just wants to wake up and play. So I’ve been ignoring him when he does it. Luckily he doesn’t cry for very long, but it still sucks having your sleep interrupted like that. Especially for a few days in a row…He’s lucky he’s so cute or else I’d be mad at him haha. I’m really hoping he picks up on our scheduled soon though. I’d also be really happy if he’d finally get on board with the whole crate training thing. He’s not a fan of the crate and cries every time he gets put in it, even when he’s super tired. I’ve never had a little puppy like him fight crate training so hard, but Luke and I are being super persistent. He needs to learn.

He prefers sleeping on people’s laps.

Staying on the subject of dogs, well kind of at least. We’ve had some very much needed rain over the weekend! And it’s supposed to be pretty rainy for most of this week as well, which is great! It’s been super duper dry here in Kansas and we really need the rain. Plus it’s great for our garden! I’m hoping by the end of the week some of the seeds we planted will germinate and then start coming up. The only problem with all of the rain is mud. Lots and lots of mud. And when you have 3 border collies, 2 of which have super hairy feet and are basically impossible to get all of the mud out unless they get a full blown bath, 1 puppy who likes to roll around in the mud, and 1 dog that doesn’t belong to you but lives in your house and also likes to roll around in the mud, well I think you get where I’m going with this. My floors are basically just made of mud at this point. There’s dirt everywhere. I feel like my house is never going to be clean ever again.

img_2506

Dean is well aware of how dirty he is and how unhappy I am about it. Ah the joys of dog ownership. 😉

So along with all of the muddy nastiness, our  front loading washing machine has been completely fucked up. A while back Luke and I had to take it all apart just to clean out a filter that was super hard to get to. After we did that it started working perfectly fine again. For about a week…After that it started reading all sorts of weird error codes, the door wouldn’t unlock unless you unplugged it for an hour and then plugged it back in, it would just randomly fill with water so I had to start turning it off, and eventually it stopped draining and so for about a week it was just full of nasty, mildew-y water and it smelled terrible. Needless to say, I haven’t really been able to get much laundry done.

Yesterday Luke and I were completely fed up with it and didn’t want to take it apart again, so we went out and bought a top loading washing machine. While we were at the store, we figured we might as well get a new vacuum as well. Ours is pretty old, and is constantly getting clogged with dog hair, because my brother-in-law’s dog sheds like freaking crazy (I really need to start brushing him every day…). So we talked to a sales associate, and he recommended a Dyson. He has the exact model that we bought, along with 2 Irish Setters (which he showed us pictures of haha). That’s actually why we ended up buying this vacuum. He said he’s had his for two years and it’s never gotten clogged, but even if it did get clogged this vacuum has a bunch of ways to clear anything out without having to take the whole thing apart, which totally sold me! I’m very much tired of having to take apart my old vacuum. It was a little more expensive then we would have liked, but we’re hoping that means we wont have to replace it anytime soon.

img_2516

You know you’re an adult when you get excited about a new vacuum and washing machine haha.

Most of my rest day has been spent doing laundry and battling the invasion of the mud and dirt with my fancy new vacuum. It’s pretty much a loosing battle, but hey, I can try! I’m just excited that I can finally do laundry again! Between being a runner, having a husband (he can be kinda messy and doesn’t know how to do laundry 😉 ), and having so many pets means that our laundry piles up very quickly! Plus the house smells sooo much better now that we’ve got the old washing machine that was full of gross water out of the house. It’s currently sitting in the garage, and I’m not sure what we’re going to do with it now, but at least we’ve got one problem solved!

So anyways, I ate like total shit last week. Too much junk, too much sugar, not enough vegetables, not enough water. It wasn’t pretty…So when I stepped onto the scale this morning I thought that I had probably gained a pound or two, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that I didn’t gain anything! I weighed in at 158.5 pounds, which is what I weighed last week. I have absolutely no idea how they heck that happened, but I’m sure not complaining! I also ate pretty darn well today, drank enough water, and am feeling pretty good! I’m definitely feeling like I’m back on track, have my food intake back under control, and hopefully I’ll start loosing some weight again. 🙂 I really want to not hate the way I look in a swimsuit while we’re in Florida in July, I wanna look awesome for the Green Day concert in August, I want to be a better, more efficient runner, and I want to be an all around healthier person. I’ve gotta keep reminding myself of those things whenever I make food choices.

I hope your week is off to a great start! Happy Monday everyone!

Operation Florida Is Offically A-Go

Luke’s mom has officially rented a 1.2 million dollar house for our trip to Florida in July. Yeah let me repeat that, Luke’s mom rented a 1.2 MILLION DOLLAR HOUSE for our vacation this summer. It’s got like 6 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms (I don’t remember exactly, but it’s close to that), a 40 foot pool in a screened in patio, and all sorts of other neat stuff. How freaking crazy is that?!? Oh and the rent is like, $350 a night and there are all sorts of weird rules and a crazy home owner’s association, because along with other rentals, people actually live in the subdivision (ew I hate subdivisions) that this house is in. Since these are million dollar homes and some of them are lake front property, I can only assume that most of the people who live there are doctors, lawyers, CEO’s, and a bunch of them are probably older. That would definitely explain all the crazy rules and home owners association.

I feel like all the of the doctors, lawyers, and CEO people aren’t going to like us very much haha. We’re going to be one big ass group of people, all originally from the Midwest, all from working class families, with a little bit of ghetto and a little bit of redneck/hick-ness all mixed. Yeah they are definitely going to hate us and it’s going to be so much fun!

And I suppose it’s a good thing we are going to be in a subdivision surrounded by other vacationers and rich people. I looked up this house on google maps and it looks like I’ll be able to run around the area without any problems, so that’s one thing I wont have to worry about. There’s also a lake within walking distance, and where there are lakes there are usually walking paths. Not sure how willing I am to run super close to a lake that’s probably filled with alligators though haha.

So, if anything this whole Florida trip has given me motivation to start eating better. I still haven’t managed to reign that in ever since I stopped counting calories. I’m not exactly saying that I want to lose some weight (even though I really do), but what I really want is to be able to feel confident enough to wear a swimming suit while we’re in Florida. I actually really love swimming, but last year I only went once because I felt like I looked fat and gross in a swimming suit. Whether that was actually true or not isn’t exactly the point though. I just want to be able to hang out in the pool or go to the beach this summer and not be constantly worrying about how I look or comparing myself to all of the other girls there. Yeah, chaining that mindset isn’t going to be hard at all…But I feel like it’s all going to start with what I’m eating, so that’s what I spent a lot of time focusing on today.

I’m actually kind of glad that I had something to really start working on today, as it was a rest day and those can get kinda boring. Plus it’s a lot easier to start eating a little better when you can’t justify eating 6 oreos because you ran 6 miles that day (because obviously it only makes sense to eat one oreo per mile you ran. Duh!). That’s another thing, Luke and I didn’t even buy those oreos that I totally ate more than 6 of yesterday! My brother in law did. It seems like every few days he brings home some kind of junk food specifically for me. One day it was a bag of mini twix bars, then a package of oreos, then yesterday it was a little bag of brownie brittle. I’m not entirely sure what his angle is, but I really wish he’d stop because I have no self control. I even told him that I did’t want to eat junk food anymore, but when he brought me the brownie brittle he said “I know you don’t want any more junk food, but I know you like brownie brittle so I got you some”. Whatever though, if he keeps doing this I’m just going to start throwing it all away. I mean, I already told him I don’t want it, and he wont eat anything he specifically bought for someone else, so that seems like the best course of action to me. Don’t get me wrong, I really hate the idea of wasting food like that, but when you really think about it, oreos barely count as food anyway.

I didn’t eat super clean today or anything, but I did make a point to include more plants into my meals. I had a humus sandwich for breakfast (I can’t be the only person who loves nothing but humus on whole wheat toast!) and a cup of coffee with soy milk and sugar (I’m out of honey sad face). Lunch was a sweet potato, sliced and roasted with some olive oil along with some ground beef, seasoned with taco seasoning. Later in the afternoon I had a snack of whole wheat crackers and a glass of orange juice with some chia seeds mixed in. For dinner I made pasta, it had a little bit of pasta sauce and a decent amount of sauteed zucchini, cauliflower, and onions in it. Yum!! It wasn’t exactly the best day of eating, but I adding more plants into my usual diet is definitely a good place to start!

As for what I did today well, I rested and re hydrated. I definitely didn’t drink enough water yesterday and I was totally feeling it today. Actually, I don’t think I’ve been drinking enough water in general as of late. I guess that’s just one more thing I need to work on. Anyway, I finished the book Shoe Dog, worked on a few blog posts, and other than taking the dogs for a quick walk I hardly left the couch at all today. I think that was a little bit warranted though. Every once in a while everyone needs a day spent sitting around doing nothing. At least I think so. Plus at the very least I feel like I at least did something productive by doing a bit of writing.

Oh and I finally got around to updating my Goals and PR’s page! I’m only about a month late with coming up with goals for the year, but whatever. 😉 I don’t have any time goals for this year anyway. Obviously I won’t mind if I can run certain distances a little faster, but my main goal is to hardcore up my mileage and run 1,000 miles this year! That’s a pretty big jump considering I only ran 567.03 miles last year, but I think as long as I really make a point to hit my weekly and monthly mileage goals I can at the very least get close to 1,000 miles. I’m definitely aiming to hit 1,000 miles right on the head though, so we’re just going to have to wait and see how that goes! So far I’m falling just a little bit behind, but as long as I get back on track and make up those 11 miles that I didn’t do last month I should be good!

On a super duper unrelated note (but lets be real here, when have I ever been able to keep a blog post on a single subject? That’s just not my jam), my sister just started her own website! How super neat-o is that? You should totally go check it out! She doesn’t have a lot going on there yet, but I’m sure she’ll be posting about all sorts of fun adventures that she has with our other sister. Plus all the links to her social media sites are on there and if you’re into adorable animals you’ll want to check those out! You may even see a few guest appearances of some of my critters. 😉

Sorry Jessica, I kinda stole your photo. But I figured you wouldn’t mind. 😉 https://www.jessicamartwin.com/

Jeez I’ve just been in a super ramble-y mood lately. I’m sorry if I’m being super boring with these long posts about life, upcoming events, and whatnot. That’s just all I’ve got to talk about at the moment. At the very least I’m not currently in super crazy Green Day fangirl mode. But be warned, it’s coming. The closer we get to August the more I’m going to start freaking out about seeing them in concert again. Remember that post that started off with me “Jumping up and down wildly while screaming incoherently”? That for real happened. I, a 25 year old “adult” momentarily reverted back to being a 15 year old girl again after purchasing Green Day tickets. Probably not one of my finer moments, but hey, it happens. 😉

Ok, I’m going to shut up now before I start rambling again.

This Week’s Goals

Last week didn’t exactly go as planned. I skipped a lot of strength work and I felt like I slacked off a lot in general. So this week I have a few things that I’m definitely going to accomplish.

  • Do the 30 Day Shred at least 3 times
  • Hit my step goal every day
  • Do yoga at least 2 times
  • Don’t skip any runs

Easy enough, right? Haha I guess we shall see. I hope your Monday is off to a great start and that you have a fantastic week!

Weekly Recap January 11th-17th 2016

Monday:

  • 10 minute warm up on the stationary bike, 1 easy mile, 5 hill repeats, a few minutes of easy running, and a 10 minute cool down on the stationary bike
  • 10 minutes of stretching/foam rolling in the evening

Still wasn’t feeling 100% on Monday, so I skipped strength training (I know, I know, I said I was going to stop skipping out on strength, but I feel like I actually had a legit reason). I haven’t done hill repeats in a while so this workout was KILLER! But also a lot of fun.

So, remember how I said I need to eat more veggies and less sugar? I had cookies for breakfast on Monday…but I had a big veggie stir fry with rice for lunch. It all balances out, right? 😉

Processed with Rookie Cam

Tuesday:

Yay! I got my strength training in! And aside from a late night brownie, I ate pretty well on Tuesday! 🙂

Wednesday:

I was feeling pretty slow on this run, but I guess I didn’t realize how tired/sore I was until I did the 30DS. It’s all good though, it was supposed to be a slow run anyways.

img_4329

Thursday:

  • Tara Stiles Strala Relax 1 hour yoga video

I Skipped running and 30 DS on Thursday. I was super sore/tired so I took an Epsom salt bath and did yoga instead.

Processed with Rookie Cam

Dean likes to do yoga with me. And by that I mean sit on my mat and get in my way.

Friday:

  • Easy 20 minutes
  • 10 minutes of stretching/foam rolling in the evening

So tired…I feel like the combination of getting over a cold and my body re-adjusting to strength training is wearing me down. Throw PMS into the mix and you have one fun combination…NOT! So, I skipped the 30 DS (at this rate it’s going to take FOREVER for me to finish). But on Saturday I plan on doing a “long” run and I don’t want to be sore or overly tired for it.

Saturday:

  • 30 minutes running, 30 minutes running/walking on my favorite trail

img_4391-1

Sunday:

  • Rest Day
  • 10 minutes stretching/foam rolling in the evening

So, this ended up being a kind of negative post. I’m going to try to stay upbeat most of the time on this blog, but sometimes training and whatnot just plain sucks, and I don’t want to lie and say that its all fun and runner’s highs and PR’s all of the time. Because its really not.

Weekly Recap January 4th-10th 2016

Monday:

  • 10 minute warm up on the stationary bike (2.4 miles), ran 1 mile hard (10:40), 10 minute cool down on the stationary bike (2.2 miles)

I didn’t exactly feel well on Monday. I originally wasn’t going to work out, but after sitting around doing nothing all morning I figured I should do SOMETHING. I ended up doing this 30 minute workout and I’m so glad I did! I felt a lot better afterwards.

Tuesday:

Back in 2012 when I first started losing weight the first exercise program I did was Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred. After completing it the first time I had lost weight and gained quite a bit of muscle. Since 2012 I’ve put on a little bit of weight and lost some muscle, so, I plan on completing the 30 Day Shred again. Plus I thing this will be a good way to supplement my running.

image

Wednesday:

Running through all of that wet/slick stuff really slowed me down, but it’s all good, it was supposed to be an easy run anyway.

Day 2 of the 30DS was quite eye opening for me. I’m sooooo ridiculously sore from yesterday, I seriously considered not doing ANYTHING when I woke up. But this really explains a lot. I’ve slowed down considerably over the past year and a half and now I think I know why. I’m no where near as conditioned as I thought I was. Sure, I can run farther, but I want those longer runs to be a little bit easier. And now I’m thinking the key to that is building my strength back up again.

img_4284

Thursday:

  • Rest Day

This was unplanned, but on top of being sore and tired, my throat hurt and I wasn’t feeling well in general. So rest seemed like the better option.

Friday

  • Rest Day

Saturday:

  • 30 minutes of 1 minute walk/1 minute run intervals

I was supposed to do a “long” run today, but I was still feeling really sick and couldn’t even run at a steady pace for very long. I’m just glad I made it out there and did something.

img_4313

Sunday:

  • Rest Day
  • 10 minutes of stretching/foam rolling in the evening

I’m not exactly happy with how this week went. I would have liked to do a long run but I just wasn’t up to it being sick and all…I suppose I needed the rest anyway. I’m starting to feel better today, so hopefully next week will go a bit better!

Everyday Adventures

Having two border collies has made me a much more active person. If I’m not running with Dean I’m walking Lily, if I’m not doing that we’re playing fetch, or learning new tricks, or running around the back yard. You get the picture.

Today my husband and I took them to one of the two dog parks we frequent. We’ve dubbed them the big one and the smaller one for obvious reasons (even though both parks already have names 😉).

Today we explored the big one. The dogs got to run around, dig, sniff, and pee to their hearts content, and us humans even got a little bit of exercise too.

I like this dog park better because it has wooded trail, big open fields, and part of the lake is open for the dogs to swim in, which is awesome because Lily LOVES to swim.
Unfortunately the lake is frozen, so Lily didn’t get to swim today. But she did get to play in the snow, which she absolutely loves. And my husband started teaching Dean to jump up on command.

img_4253

Now that the dogs are all worn out, it’s time to cuddle up on the couch, watch some Star Wars, and warm up with some tea.

I hope you’re having a fantastic Saturday!
