Weekly Recap: July 17th-23rd, 2017

Monday:

  • 1 mile run
  • 1 working in the garden

So I’ve been making a point to run a little later in the day a every once in a while. Just so it forces me to run when it’s hotter and the suns been out for the while, because that’s my least favorite weather in general, and that’s when I tend to not run very well. So basically I’m just trying to work on my weaknesses a little bit, and hopefully become a little more mentally and physically strong. Haha but let me tell you, it’s absolutely no fun! So far I’ve only been able to make it a mile running later in the day, but I’ve been running a mile and and then walking a mile back home, just so I’m out in the heat a little longer. I’m hoping working on running and being in the heat is going to make half marathon training during the summer months a little bit easier, but I guess we shall see!

Processed with Rookie Cam

Tuesday:

  • 2.5 mile run
  • 2.5 hours working in the garden ( I got shit done on Tuesday!)
  • 20 minutes of stretching

Ugh it was so hot and humid, and my run sucked…But I got a shit ton done in the garden, so at least there’s that! πŸ™‚

Processed with Rookie Cam

Wednesday:

  •  1 easy mile

Luke had fallen at a softball game and hit his head pretty hard on the ground so he took the day off from work. Since he had hit his head I wanted to keep an eye on him and didn’t want to be gone running for too long. πŸ˜‰ But it turns out he’s fine, so it’s all good!

img_4927

Thursday:

  • 20 minutes of yoga

So I woke up tired and sore everywhere. At first I thought it was because I had done so much work in the garden earlier in the week, but turns out I was actually coming down with the flu (or something similar to it) and I just didn’t realize it on Thursday.

Friday:

  • Rest Day

I was definitely too sick to do anything on Friday. I woke up tired, achy, had a headache, had a slight fever, no appetite, and just felt like crap in general. So I spent most of the day resting.

Saturday:

  • Rest Day

Still not well enough to do anything…but I did feel a little bit better! I wasn’t as achy and my fever had gone down a bit, so I think by Saturday I was on the mend. πŸ™‚

Sunday:

  • Rest day

Hurray! Half marathon training officially starts today! And on a rest day too haha. I really enjoy that Garmin’s training plans tend to start on a rest day. That very much amuses me, and I guess it helps mentally prepare me for the next day when the actual half marathon training workouts start. πŸ™‚ Plus since I’m still getting over whatever illness I had it probably best that I rest today (although I am feeling much better this morning!). πŸ˜„

Weekly Recap: June 12th-18th, 2017

I’ve kinda had a little mantra that I’ve been reciting to myself all week and it goes like this; a tight athlete is an inefficient athlete. Because, well, I’ve just been tight all over. Mostly in my calves and hamstrings, but also in my quads, shoulders, arms, and even my neck. That’s no bueno and it’s probably altering my running form enough to make me less efficient. Hence my mantra!

Along with the tightness and most likely altered running form, whenever my quads and calves get tight my shins start to ache, and nothing good ever comes from achy shins. So I’ve been reciting my mantra over and over again to remind me that I need to stretch. A lot. And so I have been! πŸ™‚

I found this nifty video on YouTube for shin splints and I’ve been incorporating it into almost every yoga session I’ve done each day. Now it hasn’t completely solved my problem, but it’s definitely made a very big improvement!

Now if only I was this dedicated to strength training! Then I’d be all set haha!

Monday:Β

  • 6 miles
  • 10 minutes of stretching/foam rolling

This week I kinda veered off of the daily running plan that goes along with the Tinman challenge and decided to work down my weekly mileage instead of working it up. So I started out the week with a “long” run, insead of the 5k that the plan calls for, and I gotta say, that ended up working out a lot better for me!!

Processed with Rookie Cam

Tuesday:

  • 5 miles in the morning
  • 30 minutes of yoga
  • 2 miles in the evening

All of that tiredness and heaviness that I felt in my legs last week was pretty much gone by this point! I had a lot of fun on my 5 miler on Tuesday and I felt so good that evening that I decided I needed to do a few more easy miles. That was the first time I’ve doubled in quite a long time! It was totally worth it!!

Wednesday:Β

  • 1.78 miles, got caught in a thunderstorm and had to run home and wait it out for a while, then did 2 more miles
  • 10 minutes of yoga

Haha yeah, things got a little crazy on Wednesday. I talk all about what went down that day here, if you want to know all of the details, but basically, my run got interrupted by a severe thunderstorm…

Thursday:

  • rest day

After Wednesday’s escapades I decided that I could use a day off from running. And not gonna lie, I didn’t want to wake up at 5 am again and used this rest day as an opportunity to sleep in a little bit. It was glorious! And I mean, I felt pretty shitty during part 2 of my run on Wednesday, so I figured a rest day was in order. πŸ™‚

Friday:

  • 5 miles
  • 20 minutes of hoeing in the garden
  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike

This run ended up being a lot of fun!! We got more thunderstorms last night so they cooled everything off a little bit. I was worried that the humidity would be terrible, but it was only at 77% this morning. Not bad!! πŸ™‚

Saturday:

  • 2 miles

We got another really bad thunderstorm the night before, so it was crazy humid and muggy and miserable outside on Saturday. I had planned on doing 3 miles, but I stopped at 2 because I was basically dying haha. On the bright side, I had a lot of fun dodging and hurdling all of the leaves and tree branches that had been knocked down by the storm. πŸ˜‰

img_4185

Sunday:

  • Active Rest Day

Yay no running for me today! Haha I actually feel pretty darn good today, but we had ANOTHER thunderstorm last night, so yet again it’s humid and gross outside. But Luke and I are going to the dog park a little bit later today, and I’m going to work on some stretching as well. πŸ™‚

Also, happy Father’s Day to all the dad’s out there! You probably are and or have a super cool dad, but my dad is definitely the coolest!! πŸ˜‰

img_4196

Me, my dad, and my baby brother. πŸ™‚

Total Weekly Mileage: 24 miles

Went over my weekly goal by a whole mile! Go me!! πŸ˜‰

Total Monthly Mileage: 48.62

So, I’m definitely hanging in there on this challenge! I’m a little bit behind, but I’m not too worried about it. Even if I don’t hit the total monthly mileage goal for this challenge I’m still going to be super proud of myself! So far I’ve hung in there when things have gotten tough, I’ve hardcore upped my mileage which I’ve been trying to do for a while now (and in the summer too! I never accomplish much in the summer, running wise), ran more miles than I ran in the entire month of May, and I’ve definitely learned that I’m capable of much more than I thought! I think all of that is much more important that hitting some arbitrary number of miles anyway. πŸ™‚

I hope you’ve had a great week!

Weekly Recap: June 5th-11th, 2017

The week was the first full week of the challengevilleΒ challenge that I’m doing this month. Not gonna lie, it’s been really rough. Between the increase in mileage and the rising temps and crazy humidity, I’ve had my ass handed to me many different times this week. At this point I’m just barely hanging in there, and I’ve fallen a little bit behind on my challenge.

So this is what the daily run guide looks like for this particular challenge;

img_3755

I started out following this guide perfectly, but by Friday all of my momentum from earlier in the week came crashing down around me and I really really started to struggle and ended up finishing this week on a really weak note. Oh well, there’s always next week I suppose.

But anyway, here’s what this weeks workouts looked like;

Monday:

  • 5k
  • 20 minutes of yoga
  • about 10 minutes of working in the garden (watering plants, pulling weeds, and a little bit of hoeing. It totally counts as a strength workout. πŸ˜‰ ).
  • 10 minutes of foam rolling/stretching

Accidentally slept through my alarm on Monday. Oops. That ended up making this run a little more difficult, as it was really starting to warm up, the sun was out and the pavement was reflecting that heat right back at me, and the humidity was at 99%. Fun times…I had to keep reminding myself that summer miles bring fall smiles, and all this hard, grinding work that I’m putting in now is going to hardcore pay off once the cooler months roll around.

Processed with Rookie Cam

Tuesday:

  • 4.5 miles
  • 40 minutes working in the garden

Got up with my alarm this morning, got out on the road just as the sun was coming up, and the humidity was only at 75% during my run on Tuesday. Yeah, this run was definitely better than Monday’s. πŸ™‚

Processed with Rookie Cam

Wednesday:Β

  • Rest Day
  • 25 minutes of yoga

I was feeling absolutely beat on Wednesday, so I decided to switch things around a little bit and take a rest day. I think that was a very good decision. I was just crazy tired all day, so rest day was probably necessary.

Thursday:

  • 5 Miles
  • 10 mintues of stretching/foam rolling

I’m really glad I ended up taking a rest day on Wednesday! Thursday’s run ended up being a lot of fun because of that, I think! Plus Revolution Radio makes every run better. πŸ˜‰

Processed with Rookie Cam

Friday:

  • 1 hour working in the garden

So this is when things started getting away from me a little bit…I was super tired Thursday night, so I ended up sleeping in until 7 on Friday, and by then it was super hot and sunny and I definitely did not want to run in that. So I thought maybe I’d try to get in a few miles in the evening.

That didn’t end up happening though. Luke and I spent most of Friday running around getting errands done, shopping, and working in the yard/garden. So by the time 7-8 pm rolled around I was too tired to even think about running. Even though I probably should have…oh well.

Saturday:

On Saturday my right shin, which is the shin that sometimes gives me trouble, was feeling sore and achy. Well that was no good. I didn’t want to risk running on it because there was once a time when I tried that and then ended up having to take a whole month off from running. So I spent my Saturday resting and icing my shin.

Sunday:

  • 1 mile
  • 40 minutes of yoga

My shin was feeling much better when I woke up this morning, so I decided to try out a short easy run. It felt great, but the rest of me well, not so much…I haven’t been sleeping very well lately but I’ve still been trying to wake up early, so I’m just tired. Despite all of my yoga, foam rolling, and compression sock wearing, my legs are still crazy sore and very heavy. I think they’re having some issues recovering since I’m not sleeping well. And don’t even get me started on the heat. The summer just isn’t a good time for me.

Anyway, since I am feeling tired and wore down in general, I only did an easy mile today and then followed that up with 40 minutes of deep yoga stretches. Hopefully that will help my legs feel a little better.

Processed with Rookie Cam

So since I’ve embarked on this challenge, I’ve really been trying to focusing on recovery and I Β guess I’m not doing enough because my legs are still crazy tired. I’ve been making sure I’m drinking enough water, replacing electrolytes (I sweat super salty), trying to eat a little bit better and at the correct times, napping when I can, doing lots of yoga, stretching, and foam rolling, and wearing my compression socks religiously.

But I guess all of that isn’t going to actually make much of a difference if I’m not sleeping well. I’m totally convinced that is my biggest issue right now. Unfortunately it’s really hard for me to get a really restful night of sleep when I’m hot, and my bedroom gets pretty darn hot in the summer. Haha the summer months just never go well for me it seems.

Total Weekly Mileage: 13.62

Total Monthly Mileage: 24.62

So I guess that puts me about 10 miles behind for the Tinman challenge. All things considered I guess that’s notΒ tooΒ bad. I’m thinking next week I’m just going to focus on sticking to the daily running plan and then worry about making up those 10 miles later (and I may never even get to that point, but I’m ok with that).

I hope your training has gone well this week!

Weekly Recap: May 22nd-28th, 2017

As you may know, last weekend I went to Illinois to help my mom and dad start cleaning out their house so that they can sell it. I ended up staying longer than I had planned, so this week ended up being all over the place, but we got a lot done and I definitely got some great cross training in in the form of hard, manual labor. And honestly, I think that’s the most fun kind of “cross training” there is! πŸ˜‰

Monday:

  • 3.05 miles

This run happened kind of spontaneously in the middle of the afternoon. My dad was napping while my brother went to pick up a part they had order for the truck they were working on. I didn’t really have anything to do at that point, so I figured hey, why not go for a run! Yeah, trying to run during the hottest part of the day, with basically no shade was not one of my better ideas. My mom had to bring me a Gatorade about half way through, but I actually ended up going farther than I thought I did. That was a nice surprise!

Also did a little bit of work around the house/yard on Monday. I mostly just picked up and burned a bunch of trash.

Processed with Rookie Cam

Tuesday:Β

Did a lot more work around my mom and dad’s house. Yet again I mostly just burned trash, but a lot of the stuff on Tuesday was heavy and I also did a lot of running up and down stairs so I totally got a workout it haha! In the evening my mom and dad went to dinner with my dads boss, so instead of working I ended up taking a long walk down the back country roads. Once I got bored with that I did a little bit of trespassing on what was my grandma’s farm. Obviously I shouldn’t have been doing that, but it was soooo weird to be right there and see the land, but to not be able to go on it. I just couldn’t help myself haha.

Wednesday:Β

More work around the house. I pulled/lifted/carried A LOT of heavy stuff while working. Wednesday was also the day I finally went back home. My brother and I helped my dad with cleaning out a trailer that they were going to haul to Colorado, and then my brother drove me home.

Thursday:

  • 2 miles

Just got out there for an easy 2 miles on Thursday. I was super sore, tired, and slightly dehydrated from working all day outside in the sun and heat and probably not drinking enough while at my parents house. Still felt pretty good, all things considered though. πŸ™‚

Also made it home just in time for all of my lilies to be in bloom! Unfortunately they don’t really last long, so I’m glad I was able to enjoy them.

Processed with Rookie Cam

Friday:

  • Rest Day

My mom, dad, and brother all stopped at my house on they’re way to Colorado on Friday. Since they had their dog with them I had to put all of mine in a separate room (they don’t get along). While doing that I ran into a framed poster that was hanging in our hallway and it fell on my foot. It bruised/swelled almost immediately, so I wasn’t able to run on Friday or do much of anything after that…Being a klutz really sucks.

img_3664

Saturday:

  • Rest Day

Spent most of Saturday sitting and icing my foot. Luckily it was starting to feel better, but walking on it too much was still making it hurt a little bit. So I kept that to a minimum and binge watched Avatar The Last Air Bender all day haha.

Sunday:

  • Rest Day

My foot is still about the same as it was yesterday, so I’m still resting it. Haha I’m just glad it got hurt now and not in the middle of half marathon training, like it did last year. But anyway, I’m thinking in the next few days it will probably be ok to do a short, easy run on. πŸ™‚

Weekly Recap: May 15th-21st, 2017

Monday:

  • Active Rest

I was still kinda getting over my cold on Monday, so I was still taking it a little bit easy. I did, however, start a step challenge on Garmin Connect with my sisters, our dad, and my sisters boyfriend, so that kept me motivated to stay moving. At the very least I hit my step goal and that’s something I don’t typically do on my rest days. πŸ™‚ Oh and I also spent some time weeding in my garden. That totally counts for something!

0c407bcd-5608-4394-9262-c5b2742aec68

Tuesday:

  • 2 miles

Everything about Tuesday’s run felt hard. But the first few “getting back into it” runs always are, so I wasn’t too worried about it. I was just glad that I finally felt well enough to get a decent run in and not feel like absolute death while I did it. Then after my run I spent an hour weeding in the garden. I have a feeling that most of my summer is going to be consumed by weeding haha.

Processed with Rookie Cam

Wednesday:

  • 5 miles

On Wednesday I battled heat, humidity, and a wind advisory that turned into a tornado watch, but I got a solid 5 miler in! Well, it was a bit slower than most of my runs have been in the previous few weeks, but considering I was just sick and I was fighting against the elements, it felt like a solid workout. Haha I actually went out without a plan, so I kinda surprised myself by covering 5 miles. I also did a bunch of walking and more weeding on Wednesday and I pulled ahead of everyone else in our step challenge. Go me!

Also this is super unrelated, but my lilies are starting to bloom and they’re super pretty. πŸ™‚

img_3492

Thursday:

  • 45 minutes of yoga

I ended up feeling really sore and tight after my huge leap back into running and walking and working in the garden earlier this week. So Thursday ended up being an impromptu rest day that involved a nice little nap followed by 45 minutes of yoga in the afternoon. Ah that was nice and very much needed.

Friday:

  • 3 miles

Oh man, thanks to the thunderstorms that rolled in the night before, the humidity was at 95% when I ran on Friday. That made this easy run feel a lot harder than it normally would. Especially for me; the asthmatic runner. I got through it though! I like to think it was because of my tasty pre-run snack. I mean, how can I be in a bad mood after having my favorite flavor of Honey Stinger waffle? πŸ™‚

Speaking of Honey Stinger; the 10 Reasons Why I Love Honey Stinger post has been crazy popular (in terms of views, that is) ever since I wrote it. So that’s been pretty neat. πŸ™‚

img_3525

Saturday:

  • Rest Day

I shoulda run on Saturday. I totally had time…haha oh well.

My mom and dad showed up at my house around 7 am, then they both slept until 1:30 pm. Then we hit the road and my dad drove  the 5 hours to Illinois. So in those hours they were asleep I coulda run, but oh well.

Sunday:

So yeah, I didn’t run today, but I sure got my calorie burn on! I spent the day helping my mom, dad, and brother clean out the house so that they can sell it. I was in charge of burning things, and burn things I did! As you can see, I’m ready for a shower! And dinner and bedtime wouldn’t be so bad either. πŸ˜‰

Sunday Stuff

Alrighty guys, I don’t have a weekly recap for you today. Since I was sick pretty much all of this week I didn’t do much running or working out or anything, so it would have just been super boring haha. But I do have a new video up on Vidme today. I showed off my garden a little bit, so if you’re at all interested in that you should go check it out! πŸ™‚

https://vid.me/bHEj

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got for today, so happy Sunday and happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms out there. You guys rock!

Weekly Recap: May 1st-7th, 2017

Monday:

  • Easy 3.5 miles
  • 25 minutes of blogilates

It was a cold and chilly day! Yay!! I kinda wanted to go for 4 miles on Monday, but I was feeling tired and was back at my house at 3.5 so I called it good. But I mean, close enough, right? πŸ˜‰

img_3317

Tuesday:

  • 10 minutes of blogilates

Tuesday was a cross train day! Haha I just barely did enough to qualify as a cross train day though. 10 short minutes of blogilates. But in all fairness, on her May workout calendar she had 2 lower body days in a row and that just wasn’t working for me haha. I probably should have spend some time on my stationary bike, but whatever.

Wednesday:

  • Rest Day

So, on Wednesday I decided that I was going to give up caffeine so I skipped my morning cup of coffee. Bad idea. I ended up feeling exhausted and shitty all day…

Thursday:

  • 3 mile run
  • 15 minutes of blogilates
  • 25 minutes on the stationary bike

I was feeling a little bit tired on Thursday, but I still got in a pretty solid workout! Now I’m realizing that I was probably starting to get sick that day, but oh well. I don’t think skipping my workout yesterday would have stopped that from happening. Luke’s sick, a bunch of people at his work are sick, it was only a matter of time before I ended up sick as well.

img_3310

Friday:

  • Rest Day

Yeah whatever illness that’s been going around finally caught up with me. I woke up with a sore throat and just feeling kinda bleh in general. I thought about running, but eventually decided that resting was probably a better idea. I ended up feeling kinda achy and started getting the chills later in the day, so taking a breaks was probably the right decision.

Saturday:

  • Rest Day

Very glad I didn’t run on Friday. I woke up feeling absolutely horrible on Saturday. So I just continued to rest on Saturday. I tried to stay hydrated and watched Nike’s breaking 2 on YouTube, because I missed the live stream from the night before. That was some incredible stuff! If I didn’t feel so gross I would have been super inspired to run Haha.

Sunday:

Oh man you guys, I don’t think I could have run today even if I wanted to. This cold is absolutely kicking my ass. I’ve been trying to stay hydrated, but it’s hard to do because I really don’t feel like drinking anything. That’s not helping the chest congestion I woke up with this morning. Ugh, it’s quite terrible and makes breathing harder. I can’t wait to get over this.
