Weekly Recap: October 1st-7th, 2018

Damn it I was really beginning to think that I was going to make it through this training cycle unscathed! You see, I’m what most people would refer to as an “injury prone runner”. I talked more about all of that on Thursday, so I won’t go back into all of it here. But anyway, I managed to hurt my leg somehow earlier this week. I’m thinking it happened during my treadmill run on Wednesday. Luckily a shortened run on Thursday, an unscheduled rest day on Friday, and a little bit of extra TLC seemed to help and I was still able to do my long run on Saturday. So I’m thinking it was nothing too serious, and it was just a little bit of soreness from running awkwardly on the treadmill.

But we’ll get more into all of that! So lets recap the week! πŸ™‚

Monday:Β

  • 3 miles
  • 30 minutes of strength work

Does anyone else find it especially satisfying when the first of the month falls on the first day of the week? Because I sure do! I kicked off the month/week with 3 miles that felt a lot more difficult than they actually were. Haha that’s all part of the process though. Followed that up with a Fit Collective Workout. It was another hard but fun strength session. πŸ™‚

img_5330

Tuesday:Β

  • rest day

After Monday’s not so great run and just feeling all around tired, I figured a day off would help. It totally did too! Apparently that was exactly what I needed. πŸ™‚

Wednesday:

  • 3 miles on the treadmill

Wednesday called for threshold work, so I decided to do that on the treadmill. I’m really bad at holding a consistent pace and the treadmill is kind of a good tool for learning how to do that. Well, or at least forcing yourself to do it haha. Anyway, I warmed up for a mile, ran at threshold pace for about a mile and a half, and then cooled down for the last half mile. I felt like I totally crushed this workout! It was great!

But I also think that’s what caused me to hurt myself. I actually felt fine afterwards, but on Thursday my right knee and shin weren’t feeling so great…

Processed with Rookie Cam

Thursday:

  • 2.5 miles
  • 20 minutes of yoga
  • a little bit of foam rolling in the evening

So like I said, on Thursday my right knee and shin weren’t feeling so great. At first I though maybe it was just a little bit of soreness or something, so I set out to do my scheduled 5 miler anyway. My leg situation wasn’t really improving as I ran though. If anything it started getting worse. Initially I was just going to suck it up and finish my run. I have a ridiculously high pain tolerance so I totally could have done it. πŸ˜‰ But the more I thought about it the more I realized that was probably a bad idea. I’ve done things like that before and I’ve ended up making injuries worse. So I did the smart thing and stopped. That was kinda hard though, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel kinda guilty doing it.

It was definitely the right move though. I spent the rest of the day off of my feet, wore compression socks, and did some yoga and foam rolling.

Processed with Rookie Cam

Friday:

  • rest day
  • 20 minutes of yoga
  • random foam rolling

Ok so Friday was an interesting day. First off, I took the day off from running to let my leg rest a little bit more. I stretched, did some random foam rolling during the day, and wore my compression sleeves. My leg was feeling better, but I didn’t want to push it by running on it.

Anyway, on Friday we went on a “Luke Adventure”. Luke Adventure are always random, always very out of the blue, usually ridiculous or unnecessary, but always fun. A Luke Adventure could be anything from randomly going to St. Louis to visit family, a trip to the pumpkin farm, a trip to the mall, an adventure to the Grand Canyon, or getting something slightly impractical like chickens or a new puppy.

So he called my on his way home from work and to make sure I wasn’t baby sitting or particularly busy and to get ready because we were going on an Luke Adventure today. And of course he wouldn’t tell me what we were doing. A lot of the time he doesn’t haha. That’s how our hour and a half journey to our Luke Adventure began. I wont tell you what we did yet though. I’ll dedicate a whole post to that tomorrow. πŸ˜‰ But if you follow me on Instagram you probably already know what went down.

Saturday:

  • 14 miles

New distance PR who dis? πŸ’πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Good news! My whole leg situation was a lot better on Saturday!! So I was able to do my scheduled long run. Yay! Got it done, felt pretty darn good doing it, and ran farther than I’ve ever gone before! Win win win win situation! I’m getting very excited about my upcoming half’s! Not sure how either of them are going to go, but hopefully they’ll be a lot of fun! πŸ™‚

Sunday:

  • rest day

I feel like I’m doing something right this time around. I’m tired today, and my legs are a little bit sore, but not so much that I can’t walk properly or that I feel like I’m too tired to function. So I mean, I feel like that’s a good thing after hitting a distance PR yesterday!

That being said, I feel like I might be coming down with a cold or something. That kinda sucks, but it’s not unexpected. My immune system is already kinda shitty and I’m sure that half marathon training doesn’t help. But anyway, spent the day playing around with the results of our Luke Adventure yesterday and walking the dogs. It’s been raining like crazy which I like, but it’s crazy muddy so the dogs are a mess and now my house is a mess and it’s a whole thing… But still, I do enjoy the rainy weather. πŸ™‚

Total Weekly Mileage: 22.5

Not bad considering I had to cut one run short and took a few unexpected rest days. πŸ™‚ I’m still kinda riding the high from my 14 miler yesterday. It’s been a while since I’ve PR’d anything, so it was pretty exciting to finally get one. Looking forward to see what I can do next week!

I hope the first week of October has treated everyone well!

Weekly Recap: September 24th-30th, 2018

This week was a little bit weird haha. We had plans and then those plans changed so my running plans changed. Then I spent several days being crazy sore from a strength workout I did on Monday. It was a whole thing haha. It was still a good week though. πŸ™‚

Monday:Β

  • 6 miles
  • 35 minute strength workout

Whew! Monday was kinda hard, but oh boy was it good!! Started off the week with 6 fantastical miles! It was probably the best run I’ve had since spring. Which is crazy, but I’ve spent the whole summer just slugging along and trying to survive. But now that the weather has been getting better running is a lot more enjoyable! πŸ™‚ Anyway, the plan for Monday was a actually 5 miles, but I ended up doing 6 because I’m an overachiever. πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰

After my run I did workout #1 from this week’s plan from The Fit Collective. So, this workout had 8 moves and for the first set you did 10 reps of each move, then for the second set you did 9 sets, then 8, and so on and so forth until you got down to 1 rep of each move. I’ve never done a workout like that before and I thought it was a lot of fun! And hard too haha. By the time I was done and was exhausted! But in a good way. πŸ˜‰

img_5177-2

Tuesday:

  • rest day

Tuesday ended up being an impromptu rest day, for a few good reasons. πŸ˜‰

So Luke and his dad play Call Of Duty online together almost every night and they talk over their headsets. Luke’s dad mentioned that he was off of work on Friday and planned on taking his boat out and going fishing, so Luke decided that we were going to drive to Illinois on Thursday so that he could go with him. So I decided to switch around my running scheduled a little bit, just to ensure that my long run for this week gets done. I thought about doing it on Thursday, but then I figured Wednesday was probably a safer bet, so that’s what I decided to do.

That’s how Tuesday became a rest day, but honestly I’m kinda glad that I decided to take the day off. My hips and quads were crazy sore after my workout on Monday! In a good way, but still, trying to run on my legs as they were probably wouldn’t have been very pleasant.

img_5199

Wednesday:

  • 20 minutes of yoga

I obviously didn’t end up doing my long run on Wednesday. My legs were still super crazy sore. It’s been pretty bad, really. πŸ˜‚ But luckily (kinda) we’ve had another change of plans. Luke’s dad is going to be busy of Friday and isn’t planning on going fishing anymore. So not so lucky for Luke, but it is kinda good for my sore legs! Now they have a few more days to recover for my long run. πŸ™‚ I spent Tuesday and Wednesday night rolling and using my self massage tools to help my legs out as well. I’m in love with my little rollga activator! That thing is awesome!

Thursday:

  • 3 miles
  • Halloween decorating!

So the only downside to the weather being super nice is that I tend to get a little bit excited and then end up going a little bit too hard haha. My plan for Thursday was to do 3 easy miles, but that obviously didn’t happen. I had a lot of fun though. πŸ™‚

Earlier this week my mother-in-law mailed me some Halloween decorations and they got here on Thursday! So I spent most of the afternoon decorating. Fun times! πŸ™‚ πŸŽƒπŸ‚πŸ˜„

img_5231

Friday:

  • Rest Day

Kinda haha. Luke and I were very busy on Friday. We went to Sam’s Club. Hobby Lobby. On The Border for Lunch. Walmart. Barnes and Noble. Tractor Supply. And Aldi for groceries. We put up more Halloween decorations. Started prepping the chickens for the colder weather. Busy busy busy.

So we went to Hobby Lobby for more fun fall stuff. And we did find some, but they had a piss ton more Christmas stuff than Halloween/Thanksgiving/fall stuff. It was kinda disappointing. But oh well. We ended up with a couple of really nice candles and new art thing for the kitchen, bandannas for the dogs, among other fun Halloween things. As for the chickens, we put up another tarp on the side of the coop to help keep the wind from blowing in and it should help hold a little bit of heat in. Winchester helped. πŸ˜‰

Saturday:

  • 13 miles

Wow, this run…A lot of stuff happened during this run haha. This was the longest run I’ve done in a while and for the most part it went really well! πŸ™‚

The first two miles were a little bit rough. Not gonna lie, that made me a little bit nervous, but around mile 3 I started feeling better and by mile 5 I started having a lot of fun. The last 2-3 miles were pretty tough, but not unmanageable. That’s probably the best part about long runs. A lot can happen and a lot can change. And a lot of times it changes for the better. πŸ™‚ Anyway, my town’s fall festival was on Saturday, so there were a piss ton of people out and about. First people were heading to the parade rout and then after that they were making their way to the park for the rest of the fall festivities, so during the parade I made my way to the town cemetery and the outer part of my town so that I could avoid a lot of the commotion haha. That ended up working out pretty well for me. For the most part I missed the migration from the parade route to the park.

At some point during this run the mail came and so did my Gobbler Grind in training tank top. So of course I had to change into it haha. I like to stop at my house every 2-3 miles to get a drink, eat a little something, and pee if I have to. So during one of those little breaks I got the mail and ended up changing. πŸ˜‰

The weather was pretty spectacular during my long run! It started out in the high 40’s but it felt colder than that and it was cloudy for pretty much the whole thing. It was great!

Ummm I guess that pretty much everything from this run haha. I feel like I might be missing a few things, but at the very least that covers most of it.

img_5301

Sunday:

  • Rest Day

Alrighty! So Saturday was the longest run I’ve ever done in a half marathon training cycle. I’m hoping to keep that trend going for the next couple of weeks though. πŸ˜‰ Since I’ve done this several times now I figure it well past time for me to start increasing my long runs. Yesterday’s went really well and surprisingly I feel pretty good today! I’m feeling slightly dehydrated, but nothing too crazy and a little bit achy, but I’ve felt a lot more sore after shorter long runs. So that’s been a pleasant surprise! I also feel like it confirms the fact that I should definitely be increasing my long runs. πŸ˜‰

Total Weekly Mileage: 22.11

I was aiming for a little bit more than that, but still not bad considering I was so sore I could hardly walk and my plans got switched around a few times haha. All in all it was a good week though. πŸ™‚

I hope everyone had a good week as well! Happy last day of September and I hope your October is wonderful!

Hair, Running, and The Fit Collective

Hey guys, no weekly recap from last week. Sorry about that… I’ve gotten kinda lazy about keeping up with my weekly recaps throughout the week, and it’s really hard to remember everything that happened and try to recap it all on Sunday. So I didn’t. I swear I’m gonna do better with it this week though. πŸ˜„πŸ‘πŸ»

Besides, last week really wasn’t all that exciting anyway. But these next few upcoming weeks should be! I’m pretty excited and slightly terrified. πŸ˜‚

Anyway, as usual Sunday (yesterday) was my rest day. I spent a good majority of it (like, 6 hours I think?) bleaching and re-dyeing part of my hair (and scalp πŸ˜‚) purple. So if you ever look at my photos and think “Ashley your hair kinda looks like shit and you need to fix it”, just know that I’m very aware, it just takes sooooo long to do that I always end up putting it off. Plus that section of my hair is super duper damaged. I’ve been dyeing it since I was 17, so honestly I’m kinda surprised it hasn’t just fallen out yet. But hey, at least it looks cool, right?!

Yeah so that’s what I spend my Sunday doing. Today was a little bit more productive. Well, running-wise at least. Got 6 miles in and I felt pretty fantastic! I’m very much enjoying the weather right now! It’s definitely been cooling off and feeling more like fall. I love it! Some of the trees are even starting to change colors! πŸ™‚ Haha it’s really hard to see in the photo below, but the trees in the woods off in the distance are starting to turn yellow and brown. I love it!

img_5153-1

The plan for today’s run was actually 5 miles but I ended up doing 6 because I’m an over achiever. πŸ˜‰ Actually, because I wasn’t paying attention and it just kinda happened haha. But those are the best kinds of runs, right? Honestly I think this might have been my best run since this spring. I’ve been slogging along just trying to survive the summer but now that the weather is getting better running is starting to get a lot more enjoyable. πŸ™‚ Now if only I could start feeling faster. Then I’d feel a little better about my upcoming half marathons. I’m currently still worried about them. But I’ve still got 47 and 48 days to go, so I’ve still got some time to make some improvements! πŸ™‚

img_5177

After my run I ate a quick snack and then got some strength training done with The Fit Collective! The fit collective is an online training program and it’s pretty neat! You get 3 new 30 minute at home strength workouts every week, access to personal trainers via email and their Facebook page, along with live Facebook Q&A sessions every month. They also have monthly goals and challenges along with a whole page on their website full of healthy recipes. Fun stuff!! The online membership is $20 a month, but if you hang tight for a few days I’ll have a code for new members to get 50% off of your first month. So it would be $10 instead of $20. πŸ™‚

img_5180

From my and then jointhefitcolletive’s intagram accounts. πŸ™‚Β

So my workout for today was something that I’ve never done before and it was a lot of fun! Freaking hard, but fun! So the workout consisted of 8 moves. For the first set the goal was to do 10 reps of each move, then for the second set do 9 reps of each move, for the third 8 reps, and so on and so forth until you get to 1 rep for each move. So like I said, it was different and I really enjoyed it. Plus it totally kicked my butt too! It took me about 35 minutes to complete the workout and by the time I was done I was completely beat! It was really good though. I’m pretty stoked to continue on with this program and see what other fun workout they have in store!

Having fun is super important to me when it comes it working out. I get bored really easily and I find it hard to really stay consistent with anything that’s not running. That’s actually one of the reasons I started running! I was bored with my workout regimen and decided to give running a try. So far it’s the only thing that stuck, but I think The Fit Collective is really going to help in that regard! I don’t think I’m going to get bored getting 3 new workouts every week! πŸ™‚

Anyway, that all I’ve got for today I suppose.

Happy Monday!

~Ashley

Weekly Recap: September 10th-16th, 2018

Oh man, this week has been tough. I’ve been feeling kind of off all week and then on Sunday I woke up feeling sore everywhere for no real reason, tired, and sniffly. So I suppose that would explain it.

Unfortunately that means I didn’t run a lot this week. That might be for the best though, it I am sick or getting sick it’s probably better that I take things easy instead of pushing myself and stressing my system more. It’s just been kinda frustrating because I didn’t really know what was up until Sunday morning. So yeah, this week was a struggle, but at least now I have a pretty good idea as to why. Not exactly happy with how it went, running wise, but it happens. Hopefully I’ll feel better next week.

Monday:Β

  • 2 miles
  • 15 minutes of yoga

Had a shorter, slightly speedy run on the scheduled for Monday. I thought it was going to be an easier run but it turns out I was really wrong. This two mile run was harder than the 11 miles I did on Saturday. Running is weird like that somethings.

img_4757

Tuesday:

  • 3.1 miles

Things I regretted about this run; that I didn’t get out earlier and that I wore tights instead of shorts. Things I didn’t regret about this run; doing it.

Another rough run…The plan was 5 miles, but I cut it short. Obviously. Still pretty happy with what I got done though. πŸ™‚

img_4777

Wednesday:Β

  • 3 miles on the treadmill

I actually ended up sleeping in on Wednesday and really didn’t feel like going out, so I did this workout on the treadmill. Warmed up for a mile, ran at threshold pace for about a mile, and then cooled down for a mile. Kinda haha. There was about a 40 minute break between my threshold mile and cool down mile. My dad actually called me right as I was starting that last mile, so I hopped off the treadmill to talk to him. We haven’t really talked in a while so that was nice. Plus talking to my dad was definitely more important than running 3 consecutive miles. πŸ˜‰

So instead of a photo from Wednesday’s run here’s a photo of my dad and I hiking in Lory State Park from 2016. πŸ™‚

img_4953

Thursday:

  • rest day

Yeah, no. Just not feeling it…

img_4843

Friday:

Yay pumpkin picking!

So I didn’t run on Friday, but Luke and I were pretty busy! We got quite a bit done, along with going to a cider mill and picking some pumpkins. It was a lot of fun, and you can read more about it by clicking the link above!

Saturday:

  • 2.25 miles

Had no real intentions for Saturday. I just went out to see what I could do. Apparently the answer to to that was 2.25 miles. Not great considering my long runs are usually on Saturdays, but a little something is always better than nothing.

img_4916

Sunday:

  • Β rest day

Luke and I both woke up feeling sniffly and gross. Well, even more so than I’ve been feeling. So I spent the day resting, relaxing, and trying to recover from whatever bug I seem to have come down with. Hopefully I wont be feeling too badly for too long.

img_4950-1

Total Weekly Mileage: 10.47

Well that’s slightly embarrassing. But still better than nothing! Really hoping that next week goes better.

But for now, happy Sunday! I Hope everyone has a great week!

Weekly a Recap: August 27th – September 2nd, 2018

I definitely got over the “bleh” feeling I was experiencing last week! So that’s good!! Spent most of this week just chugging along and getting my runs done. Or at least most of them. I skipped the one I had planned for Sunday, but I felt like that was necessary.Β  But we’ll get to that in a minute. πŸ˜‰

Monday:

  • 4 easy miles
  • 15 minutes of strength work

Started off the week with 4 sunny, hot, and humid miles. Hot and humid has pretty much been the theme of this week. It hasn’t exactly been fun, but like I said, I’m still chugging along. Just a little more slowly than I’d like. Haha well, at lot more slowly, but hey, the heat does that to me and I’m well aware of that. I can’t wait for the cold weather just so I can start speeding up a little bit haha.

img_4426

Tuesday:Β

  • 3 miles, intervals
  • 15 minutes of foam rolling

I slept in and then procrastinated my run on Tuesday. I did get it done though! Ended up doing my interval workout on the treadmill. Honestly I’m kind of glad I procrastinated doing this run. I feel like it went a lot better than it would have if I ran first thing in the morning like I often do. Aside from doing it on the treadmill I felt pretty good doing this workout! πŸ™‚

img_4457

Wednesday:Β

  • 5 miles

Got some cloud cover on Wednesday!! That was pretty nice! Still hot and humid though…

Anyway, I like running in my town’s cemetery. It’s nice, quite, usually no traffic or other people. It’s very peaceful. The only problem is small town = small cemetery. Following the road all the way around is only about .3 of a mile. Still find myself running there all the time though.

img_4479

Thursday:

  • rest day

The plan on Thursday was a cross training day. Stationary bike, strength work, all of that. But somehow I managed to hurt my back in my sleep on Wednesday night? Like seriously, I somehow fucked it up so bad that just moving hurt in. Haha I guess I must be getting old. I never understood the whole hurt back thing before, but oh boy do I get it now! πŸ˜‰ Anyway, since I somehow hurt it I decided to let it rest on Thursday.

img_4483

Friday:

  • rest day

My back was still a little achy on Friday. Not as bad as Thursday though. But Friday was a scheduled rest day anyway, so that kinda worked out for me. πŸ™‚

Anyway, on Friday Luke and I had planned to do some errands, grocery shopping, and whatnot. Our usual every-other-Friday routine. Our plans got a little thrown off while we were getting into the truck and getting ready to go. As we were pulling out of the driveway two dogs ran into our yard. A black lab and some kind of lab mix. So we got out and managed to grab on of the dogs, but the other took off down the street. Luke went after him while I held on to the other dog but every time Luke got close to the other dog he took off running. So I put the other dog inside in our spare bedroom and we got into the truck and went after the other dog. We couldn’t get close to him though. We gave up on him after 10 minutes or so. The dog we caught had a collar but no tags. The other dog had tags, but I wasn’t exactly convinced that they came from the same place. I think they just kinda found each other while they were both out running.

Anyway, after we gave up on catching the second dog we drove around our neighborhood looking for anyone who looked like they were out looking for a dog, but we didn’t find anyone. So we went back home and I convinced Luke to surrender the dog to animal control (which is legit just the k9 unit in our town haha. The police force in deals with stray dogs.).Β  Luke felt bad sending the poor guy to some kennel, but I told him at least he’d be safe there and all his owner would have to do was call animal control and they’d be able to get him back. So that’s what we did. Called animal control and a cop came to our house to pick him up and bring him to the kennel. I sure hope the poor guy got picked up by his owner later that day. But at the very least Luke and I got him somewhere safe where he wouldn’t get hit by a car or attacked by another dog or something.

After he was taken care of we finally set off to get our errands done. πŸ™‚

img_4505

Poor guy was older, exhausted, and stressed out. He was very friendly and cooperative though. I hope he made it back home!Β

Saturday:

  • 11 miles

Woke up at 5 am, got out on the road while it was still dark out, but it was still really hot out…I even saw some heat lighting. It was in the mid 70’s, 92% humidity, and just gross in general out. Not fun at all. But still better than last weeks long run! Haha last week I didn’t fuel or hydrate properly and that ended up being my downfall. So I made absolutely sure to do just that this week and obviously that ended up working! The plan was 11 miles and mission accomplished! But I did the first 9 miles outside, but the humidity was abolutely killing me, so I finished the last 2 miles on the treadmill. But I got it done and that’s all that matters!

Spent the rest of the day trying to recover from those 11 miles. Haha like I said, that humidity was killer! I felt absolutely drained afterwards.

img_4529

Sunday:

  • rest day

Alrighty! Finally made it to Sunday!

So the plan on Sunday was 5 miles. Trying to do a few back to back long/medium long (because at this point 5 miles is basically a medium long run for me) because of the whole two half marathons in two days thing. But I woke up feeling super duper dehydrated and very drained. Physically and mentally. I thought I had done enough hydrating yesterday, but obviously not. Oh man and that heat and humidity yesterday! It gets me every time…

So while I would have really liked to have done my back to back runs, I just didn’t think it would have been a good idea for me this week. Not while I’m feeling like this. But I am happy with getting my long run done this week! So at least there’s that! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

img_4536-1

Total Weekly Mileage: 23 miles

Not too bad!! Would have liked to get to the 28 miles that I had planned on, but still happy with how the week went. I’m very much looking forward to cooler weather though. I always feel so much better during the cooler months. But summer running is making me stronger and more tough. Or at least I sure hope it is! πŸ˜‰

Anyway, wishing everyone a safe and happy Labor Day tomorrow!

Weekly Recap: August 20th-26th, 2018

This week I’ve been feeling like I might be coming down with a cold, but then I’ve never actually gotten one. It’s been pretty obnoxious. It hasn’t stopped me though! Slowed me a down a little, sure, but I’m still trucking!

Currently just taking things week by week and day by day, and not trying to worry about the runs I’ve done or the runs that I have to do. It’s a lot easier getting through workouts when you’re not super aware of the run you did the day before haha. At this point in my training I’m having fun (despite not feeling that great this week), but I guess it hasn’t really hit me that I’ve got a new, big challenge coming up. Right now I’m not in the least bit worried about my two half marathons in two days. But I’m sure that’ll change once we start getting closer and closer to the race days! But for now, everything is going pretty well and I’m not stressing over anything. πŸ™‚

Monday:

  • 3 easy miles
  • 30 minutes of strength training
  • 25 minutes of yoga

Kicked off week 5 of half marathon training with 3 easy miles, on a chilly, drizzly morning! It was great! Haha I’m always much more enthusiastic about running when it’s not hot and sunny outside. πŸ˜‰ Followed my run with some strength work and then yoga later in the day.

img_4241

Tuesday:Β

  • 2 miles

I was a lot less enthusiastic about my run on Tuesday. The plan was to do an interval workout and to do 4 miles, but obviously I only ended up doing half of that. I just wasn’t feeling it, but hey, it happens. And at the very least, I still ran. That’s always better than not running at all. πŸ™‚

Also probably should have done some yoga or stretching or something on Tuesday. But enthusiasm to do anything was super low haha. But I did completely clean out my chicken coop, so there is that.

Oh and for some reason my mom asked me to send her pictures of all of my tattoos. Haha it started out with my Green Day one (which she hates πŸ˜‰ ), and then she wanted to see the rest of them. Not sure what that was about, but now I have recent photos of all of them. Why is it so hard to take good photos of tattoos? Haha I swear the all look better in real life. Also, I definitely need more.

Wednesday:Β

  • 5 miles

I was much more enthusiastic about running on Wednesday! The weather was still pretty nice out, not too hot out and pretty cloudy. πŸ™‚ Had a lot more fun doing these 5 miles than I did doing the 2 on Tuesday.

Even though my run was fun I was still feeling pretty bleh though. I needed to do some strength work but obviously I didn’t. Meh, at least I still ran though. πŸ™‚

img_4259

Thursday:Β

  • rest day
  • 15 minutes of foam rolling

I was hoping a rest day would beat my bleh feeling. Originally the plan was to have Thursday be a cross train day, but I skipped that. It was rainy out pretty much all day though. My favorite!! So I ended up taking Dean for a nice little walk in it. Haha we both like the rain. πŸ™‚

But anyway, Thursday night I made a last minute decision to switch around my long run and hill workout this week, because it was supposed to get really hot again over the weekend, and at this point we all know I ain’t about that life. So at 9:45 on Thursday night I started rushing around getting everything ready to do a long run on Friday.

Friday:

  • 8 miles
  • 15 minutes of foam rolling

So, I made a very rookie mistake during this run. I didn’t drink enough water before or during this run, I didn’t fuel during it at all, and I didn’t have any kind of electrolyte replacement. All things I need to do during summer long runs. Especially particularly hot and humid ones. Friday wasn’tΒ tooΒ hot, but it was really humid (97%) and hazy out. Haha you can even see how hazy it was in the photo below. And it’s not edited or filtered in any way.

The plan was to do 10 miles, but obviously that didn’t happen. Totally my fault. Like I said, should have fueled and hydrated better. At about mile 6 I felt like I was dying. Luckily mile 6 happened at about a mile away from my house, so I had to keep going to get back there haha. When I did I grabbed some cash and ran to Casey’s (which is just around the corner from my house) and got a Body Armor and oh boy did I need it! I downed it really fast once I had made it back home, and I felt a lot better afterwards. It was hot and sunny out and I didn’t feel like heading back out the door, so I hopped onto the treadmill. I made it another mile, but that was all I had left in me. So didn’t make it to 10 miles, but I got close. I know I would have made it if I would have actually fueled and hydrated properly. Oh well. 8 miles on a really humid and hot day basically counts for 10 anyway. πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰

Saturday:Β

  • 3 miles, hills
  • like 3 hours of bowling

Getting up and doing this run after my hard, depleted feeling long run was, well, hard. πŸ˜‚ I was tired from the long run and the thought of doing a hill workout wasn’t very pleasant. I did it though! On the treadmill. I had actually decided earlier this week that I wanted to do this run on the treadmill. Since I don’t have many big hills near by, at least ones that take 5-10 minutes to run up, that makes the logistics of running up a hill for 8 minutes (the plan for Saturday. 3 times.) a little bit difficult. So the treadmill is a great option for that!

Anyway, it was hard. My legs were tired, but I got it done!

Then last night Luke and I went out with his brother and his girlfriend. That was fun, but we really need to find something to do other than bowling. Sure it’s fun, but we were there for 3 hours and it got really boring after a while…

Sunday:

  • rest day
  • 15 minutes of foam rolling

As usual, Sunday’s are my rest days! I’ve been pretty tired today. Probably because of my long run/hill workout, and then staying out late last night. Plus alcohol haha. So it’s been nice doing nothing all day. Today I’ve just kicked back, relaxed, and let my work from the week seep in. 😁

Total Weekly Mileage: 21.10

Not bad considering that I cut a couple of runs short! Besides, I wanted to take this week a little bit easier anyway, so mission accomplished! Still feeling a little bleh and tired, but hopefully that will get better soon. Also hoping that the weather starts cooling down again. But we’re getting close to the end of August and to the beginning of fall, so maybe it will. πŸ™‚

But for now, I will wish you a happy Sunday because that pretty much covers everything from this week!

Weekly Recap: August 6th-12th, 2018

This week has been a little more tough. Mostly because I’ve been pretty tired and it’s been really hot and gross out. But even so, I haven’t skipped or cut a single run short this week and I’m pretty darn proud of that! πŸ™‚

At this point I’m only 3 going on 4 weeks in, but this training cycle has been a lot different than the training I did for my first 3 half marathons. I haven’t skipped or cut anything short this time around, but I did a lot during my first 3 training cycles. In all fairness though, I was also hurt while training for those (and a few of those injuries weren’t even running related haha). I’m also doing more mileage earlier on and I’ve already done my first double digit run this week, which I wouldn’t have even been close to doing the other 3 times I’ve done this.

I don’t know what it is, but this time around something just clicked and I’m getting shit done! Originally I was just going to try to survive both of my half marathons (since I’m doing two in two days and all. πŸ˜‰ ), but now I’m thinking about chasing a PR during the Longview Half, which will be the first of the two. I’ve just been putting in a lot of work so far and if I keep things up at this rate I really should be able to! Which would be amazing since last year at Longview didn’t go very well for me. Plus I haven’t PR’d in anything in forever and that’s just kinda sucked. I’m still not entirely sure if it’s a good idea to chase a PR for that half when I have another the day after, but my goal for the Gobbler Grind was always just to survive it and cross the finish line anyway. Plus my dad and my brother are doing that one with me, so I feel like it will be easier to do just that since I wont be doing the second one by myself.

I don’t know man, the thought of chasing a PR in general is kinda scary and exciting. But especially now that I’ll still have another half to do after finishing the first one. I think I’m gonna go for it though! Because isn’t the whole point of running to do fun, crazy, scary, exciting things? It sure is for me!!

Anyway, those are just some thoughts I’ve been having. I know I’m still super early into this training cycle, but I have been needed to figure out my goals for these two races and I think I just have. πŸ™‚

So lets talk about this week’s training!

Monday:

  • rest day

Last Saturday and Sunday I did a long run and then a medium long run. It was the first time I’d ever done something like that and it went really well! But I still had to recover from it, hence the rest day on Monday. πŸ™‚ That night we had a few storms roll through and the brought some much needed rain with them! Haha one of my all time favorite hobbies is watching thunderstorms roll in and taking photos/videos. I got a pretty cool little video of some lightning that night. πŸ™‚

Tuesday:

  • 4 miles, intervals
  • 30 minutes of strength work

It was still raining on Tuesday morning, which made me a happy camper! I was feeling kinda tired though, so it did take me a while to get out the door. I’m so glad I did though! This run reminded me why I love interval work so much!! Plus it was a little bit cooler because of the rain and that helped a lot. Haha honestly this is probably one of the best runs I’ve had all summer! I worked hard and felt really great doing it. Followed it up with some strength work later in the day. πŸ™‚

Wednesday:

  • 2 treadmill miles

Originally the plan was to do 5 miles on Wednesday and then 2 on Thursday, but I was feeling kinda worn out from my interval session on Tuesday and it was hot and gross out, so I decided to switch those two runs around. Did this one on the treadmill because of an air quality warning. It wasn’t exactly fun, but I got it done! πŸ™‚

Thursday:

  • 5 miles

Thursday was another hot one! I tried to tough this one out on the road, but we had another air quality warning and it was pretty bad that day. So I ended up doing 3.18 miles on the road and then came inside and finished the last 1.82 miles on the treadmill. Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do! But I got my 5 miles in and I was very happy about that.

Friday:

  • 3 miles, hills

Stuck to the treadmill again on Friday. The weather was still pretty bad and I didn’t feel like running in it. Plus doing my hill workout was a lot easier on the treadmill haha. I was able to run uphill for the prescribed amount of time which was nice. None of the hills in my neighborhood are big enough to run up for more than 3-4 minutes, which can be a bit of a challenge when doing a hill workout. But now that I have a fancy treadmill I was able to do the whole thing, exactly as my training plan called for. Pretty neat!

Saturday:

  • 10 miles
  • 40 minutes of yoga

I understand why my training plan calls for hard workouts and speed sessions the day before my long runs every once in a while, but that doesn’t mean I like it. 10 miles on very tired legs on Saturday. But I mean, that is kinda the point…and probably really helpful for the two half marathons in two days thing. Still though, this one was hard. Well actually for the most part it wasn’t too bad. But it was really starting to heat up during the last 3 miles and that’s when it started getting really hard. I had made it back to my house at 9.57 miles and said fuck it, I’m finishing this run on my treadmill. And you bet your ass I did hop on the treadmill for .43 miles. Oh man that was probably one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever done, but it was nice to finish that last little bit in my air-conditioned house haha.

Finally did some stretching on Saturday as well. You might have notice that I haven’t really done much of that or strength work or any cross training this week. Yeah, remember how I said I’ve been really tired? The fact that I’ve gotten all of my runs done this week is impressive! But I do know that all of that other stuff is important and I am going to focus on doing more next week. This week I was just happy to get all of my runs in. πŸ˜‰

Sunday:

  • rest day

Yay!! Haha I’ve legit been looking forward to my rest day all week. πŸ˜‰ I spent the day binge watching Game Of Thrones. Last night Luke and I went to a house warming party that our friends threw and they let me borrow season 6 and 7 so I can catch up. But anyway, it was nice to sit around, do nothing, and watch TV all day. πŸ™‚

Now this is more of the mileage that I had wanted to be running all summer! Unfortunately that didn’t happen, but at least I’m here now. πŸ™‚

Anyway, this week was a little bit of a challenge, but I got it done! Can’t wait to see what I accomplish next week!!

Happy Sunday!
