August 27th, 2018

Around this time of year the sun shines through the trees right into our backyard in the morning and I think it’s super pretty. πŸ™‚ I’m gonna have to start eating breakfast outside, just for the views.

img_4403

Honestly I’d be much more inclined to eat outside in the morning if it wasn’t so freaking out out. At 7:00 this morning it was 80 degrees out and by 3 pm it was 92 but it felt like 100. Yuck. So yeah, I probably should have gotten up earlier to run this morning. I woke up at 7, but I probably should have been up at 5. That would have at least made my run for today a little bit more enjoyable.

The plan for today was 4 easy miles. Mission accomplished!! But since it was so hot out I don’t think I would have been able to accomplish anything other than an easy run today. I know I complain a lot about the heat, but it’s mostly because it’s just so damn frustrating! It slows me down hardcore, and that’s saying something because I’m already a super slow runner. It makes running much more difficult and I usually end up feeling drained, tired, and exhausted for the rest of the day after a run. Summer is just not for me, my friends. My body does not react well to hot weather.

img_4426

That being said, today’s 4 miler wasn’t really too terribly bad. It was hot and humid and slow, but it wasn’t too miserable, all things considered. For going on 3 weeks now Rancid’s album Indestructible has been the soundtrack to like 90% of my running haha. But since I’m currently very much into that album right now it definitely made my run a little bit better this morning. πŸ™‚ But it’s supposed to be even hotter tomorrow morning and no amount of good music is going to make that better, so I might just end up doing my interval workout on the treadmill. That thing has come in very handy this summer and I am eternally grateful to my sister for giving it to me!

img_4405

Anyway, lucky for me I still have half of a watermelon in my fridge and literally nothing is better than cold watermelon after a super hot run! So refreshing! So tasty! Watermelons are probably my favorite thing about summer! Haha I don’t even bother slicing them or cutting them up or anything. I just scoop the flesh right out of the rind. My preffered method of doing that is with an ice cream scoop (because bigger bites, duh πŸ˜‰ ) but a normal spoon works just as well. πŸ™‚

After my run I did a little bit of strength work as well. I wanted to do at least 30 minutes but I made it through 15 haha. I was completely dead after running in the heat this morning. Who’s bright idea was it to only ever run fall half marathons? Because a good majority of training for them happens in the summer. Maybe I should aim for a spring one next year. The only problem with that is that I’m terrified race day will end up being warm and I’m obviously not a fan of that. Oh man, honestly it’s probably a good thing that I always aim for fall races. That pretty much forces me to run in the summer and I need all the motivation I can get to run when it’s hot out.

Anyway, I’ve spent a good majority of my day searching for one of my favorite t-shirts. Have you ever had one that was just super comfy and fit you super well and that you absolutely love? Yeah, that’s how I feel about this one, but dammit if I can’t find it anywhere! And I’ve looked in some weird places. Sure I started out with the obvious ones, my closet, drawer, and the laundry room. But eventually I resorted to under my bed (and we don’t have a bed frame so I literally had to lift up the mattress and box spring), behind the dresser and my nightstand, under/between the washing machine and dryer, and under the couch. But nope. Nothing… It’s very sad really and I have no clue where I could have left it. I just noticed it was missing because I almost exclusively wear tank tops in the summer, so who knows when I actually lost it. Sad face. Haha but on the bright side, I cleaned pretty much everywhere I looked! You would not believe the amount of dog hair and dirt that accumulates under my couch in just a few months. I should probably clean under there more often. πŸ˜‚

I also had some more chicken drama today. It can get pretty windy here in Kansas. Especially in the spring and fall, and the wind has definitely been picking up lately. This afternoon it was particularly bad. So bad that it literally moved the dog kennel around the chicken coop back a couple of feet, and somehow while that happened two of the chickens got out. Luckily they’re pretty easy to catch and they never go far, so I was able to get them back to where they belong pretty easily. But since the wind was still blowing the dog kennel around, I put them all into the actual coop so that couldn’t happen again. Luckily that is too heavy for the wind to blow around, so it wasn’t going anywhere.

img_4429

You can see the line in the grass where the kennel used to be and obviously the pool used to be inside of it. The wind moved it pretty far!

So when Luke got home from work we set to work, anchoring the dog kennel to the ground, so this whole situation wouldn’t happen again. We had some little anchors that Luke hammered through the very bottom of the chain link into the ground, but we didn’t think that would be enough, so he also put in a post to help keep it in place. Then we made a few adjustments to the tarp situation, and now we thing it should hold up better in the wind. πŸ™‚

The tiny raptors were very happy to be let back out. There isn’t a lot of room in the inner part of the coop for all 8 of them. That’s part of the reason we built the whole dog kennel set up thing. Plus as long as it’s not being blown around by the wind, it gives them a little bit more protection at night or if we’re not home to keep an eye on them.

But anyway, that’s all I’ve got for today!

Weekly Recap: April 2nd-8th, 2018

I managed to impress myself this week! I did pretty good running-wise, considering we weren’t home for most of Monday and had a hand injury that kinda slowed me down earlier in the week, but I still got a decent amount of running done! πŸ™‚ Thanks to that hand injury I didn’t really get any strength work or stretching done. I just haven’t been able to use it very much and that makes doing most things more difficult. Still though, I’m happy with how this week went.

Monday:

Monday was an interesting day! It was our last day in Illinois so we squeezed in quite a few things before we had to go home! Luke, two of his brother’s, me, and my brother spent a lot of time doing all sorts of fun things together, before we had to start heading back home. I talk about all of that stuff here, if you’re interested.

Tuesday:

  • Rest Day

After all of the excitement on Monday I needed a rest day! So I took one. πŸ˜‰ I spent most of Tuesday drinking water because I was feeling dehydrate, resting, and tending to my hand. Haha on Monday I got bit by a dog. It wasn’t that big of a deal, but my hand was sore, swollen, and I pretty much couldn’t do anything with it.

Wednesday:Β

  • 2.5 miles easy miles

Yay! I finally got to wear my super spiffy new Zensah compression socks!! Haha they were actually delivered on Monday, but obviously I didn’t do any running until Wednesday. πŸ˜‰ It’s not really feeling much like spring anymore, here in Kansas. It was pretty cold on Wednesday. But I’m already looking forward to all of the watermelon that will be devoured this summer! So obviously I needed socks to represent that haha.

Thursday:

  • 3 miles

Thursday ended up being the one warm day this week. In the afternoon it ended up being in the 60’s! It was kinda nice running in the warm sunny weather, but I still prefer the cold. πŸ˜‰ Anyway, I’m hoping my peach tree hold up during this wacky weather! It’s getting ready to bloom and I really want to get some peaches this year!!

Friday:

  • 2.27 miles

Another chilly day on Friday. I wasn’t complaining though. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, I’ve been reading Jeff Galloway’s book β€œThe Run Walk Run Method”, so on Friday I decided to try out the cadence drill in that’s in this book, because oh man, my cadence could use all the help it can get! I did modify it a little bit though, since I was doing it on its own instead of as a warm up for a speed workout (as the book suggests you can do this drill for). So I warmed up with a mile of easy running instead of 10 minutes (I’m slow. It’s a fact.) and did 10 reps instead of the recommended 3-7 lol. And then did another 1/2 a mile of easy running for a cool down. But like I said, I’m slow and I wanted to hit at least 2 miles today, so mission accomplished on that front! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ˜„ It was a fun little drill sequence though! And I’ll probably end up using the actual recommendations as a warm up for a speed session every once in a while. πŸ˜„πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Also, this was my lunch, and it was delicious as always. 🍞πŸ₯‘πŸ…πŸ³πŸ˜‹

Saturday:

  • 8 miles

You know how not all runs are rainbows and sunshine? Well actually, for me most of theΒ  running I do is super hard. Sometimes it’s fun and I usually like the way I feel when the run is done, but those rainbows and sunshine runs are very few and far in between. Saturday’s 8 miler though was the rare exception! Nothing but rainbows, sunshine, happy thoughts and feelings, even though it was a cold, cloudy, and windy day. It was fucking great!

Sunday:

  • Rest Day

Yay! Yesterday’s run was fun, but boy am I tired today! Totally worth it though. πŸ˜‰ Spent the morning throwing together some crock pot chili, did a little bit of cleaning in the afternoon, and spent the rest of the afternoon reading Alex Hutchinson’s new book Endure. My hand was feeling almost back to normal today and I probably should have done some stretching, but meh, I was tired and didn’t feel like doing it haha. That’s not a good excuse, but oh well. Today was still a good day. πŸ™‚

img_0896

Total Weekly Mileage: 15.78

Not bad all things considered! Need to keep that number moving up though! My main running goal for the year is to build up to 40-50 miles per week. Obviously I’ve still got a way to go and I’m a little farther behind than I would like to be thanks to some setbacks earlier this year, but this week was definitely a step in the right direction! πŸ™‚

Happy Sunday everyone!

Thursday Things

Ah Thursday. My my favorite day to do a bunch of random ramblings. πŸ˜‰

So I guess we should get some running talk out of they way. Or well, kinda lack there of. I have been suffering from a bit of a stomach thing. I’m not sure what or why, and I’ll spare you all of the gory details, but it’s kinda sucked haha. On Monday I tried to run but only made it a mile before I had to call it quits. So on Tuesday I took the day off, rested, and ate a lot of potatoes and white rice. Fun times. I was feeling a little bit better on Wednesday and got out and ran, but only 2 miles. That’s definitely better than nothing though! Today I just wasn’t feeling it. I could have run. Probably should have run. But I ended up doing 30 minutes of yoga instead.

img_0613

Not sure what caused my stomach troubles. I haven’t really been eating anything different, new, or weird. I guess I just got some kinda bug or something. Whatever. I seem to be getting better and that’s all that matters. πŸ™‚

I have made one slight adjustment to my diet though. I’ve been making myself oatmeal for breakfast for about the last week now! That’s kind of a big deal for me. I’m not all that big into making myself a decent meal for breakfast. That just takes extra effort that I don’t feel like putting into my food first thing in the morning. But breakfast is the most important meal of the day, as they say. So I figure I should be eating a little something more than just a piece of fruit, a cheese stick, a Honey Stinger waffle, or even worse, just coffee. Eating a bowl of oatmeal every morning seems to be doing me quite a bit of good though! I’m not absolutely starving about halfway through the morning and usually just need a small snack a few hours before lunch. So actually taking the time to make a decent breakfast seems to be a good habit for me to be in.

img_0625

Yay oatmeal!

My oatmeal for breakfast habit might be a little difficult to keep up with this weekend though. On Saturday night Luke and I are going to be driving to St. Louis, so he can spend Easter with his dad, step mom, and two of his brothers. And I’ll get to spend at my grandma’s house with my mom, brother, and uncle. So my grandma is going to have a pretty full house for Easter. I’m sure that’ll make her really happy! πŸ™‚ It’ll be fun for all of us though. I believe on Monday Luke plans on taking his brothers, my brother, and obviously myself to the St. Louis zoo! I sure hope we get to do that! the St. Louis zoo is so much fun!! I’m pretty sure it’s one of the best zoos in the country (at the very least it’s about 100 times better than the Kansas City zoo). And if you’re willing to walk a little bit there are plenty of places to park for free in Forest Park, so you don’t have to pay for parking and entry to the zoo is free. Pretty awesome. πŸ™‚

Anyway, not sure what my family will be doing for Easter. We used to go to Church every Easter (and every Sunday really), but I’m not sure that’s what we will be doing. But I’m sure my grandma and Uncle will make a bunch of yummy food! You can always count on them to cook on holidays! I wonder if my grandma will have her Easter tree out (or even if she still has it). Did you guys have an Easter tree? Haha I’ve just recently learned that’s something that not everyone does! Apparently it’s a German tradition, which does make a lot of sense. My mom’s side of my family is super German. My late grandpa’s parents immigrated here before he was born. Pretty neat! So I’ve grown up doing a lot of German things without even really knowing it. That also explains why my family is of the Lutheran denomination haha. πŸ˜‰

So here’s a photo of me (I’m the one standing up) and my sisters (yes they’re twins) on Easter in 1997. So that would be the year before my brother was born. It’s not a great photo, but you can kinda see our Easter tree on the table. πŸ˜‰

img_0627-1

Here’s a better photo of one from Google. πŸ™‚

A few people in my neighborhood have decorated trees and bushes in there front yards for Easter, so that’s pretty neat!

Anyway,Β  it’s been a super muddy mess outside because it’s been pretty rainy and wet out. My backyard is basically a giant mud pit and Dean and Finn are both super gross. They’re gonna have to be bathed before we got to St. Louis on Saturday. They’re not gonna be happy about that, because after they’re clean, the won’t be able to go back outside and that’s where they both prefer to be pretty much all day, every day.

img_0628

So. Much. Mud…

So, remember almost 2 weeks ago when I ordered a pair of running tights from Oiselle? The ones with all of the pockets that I was so super excited about?? Yeah, they still haven’t gotten here yet…

img_0429-1

So. Many. Pockets!!

It’s the UPS’s fault. Every time I order something online and it ships via the UPS it always ends up getting delayed. Never for this long before though… So on Tuesday I emailed Oiselle to if they knew anything about the situation with my order. All they could tell me was that it’s delayed with the carrier (but I’m hoping they’ve contacted the UPS and they’re working on getting my package to me), but they were kind enough to refund me the $8 I paid for 3 day shipping. I really appreciate how quickly Oiselle got back to me and that they were kind enough to refund my shipping charge. That was great! This morning I reported it to the UPS as a lost package, so hopefully they’ll be able to find it and finally get it to me. I was so excited about all of those pockets and I really want to put them to use!!!

img_0631

So semi related, but when my feet were feeling a little bit sore last week I realized that the only compression gear I have for my feet are holiday themed (Thanksgiving and Christmas to be exact). Really that’s not a big deal and obviously that’s not gonna stop me from wearing them when I need them, but I still thought that was boring, so I spent some time waiting for Zensah’s watermelon socks to be restocked and yesterday they finally were, so I bought myself a pair! πŸ™‚ Luckily those are coming through the USPS so at least I know they’ll get here when they’re supposed to and I wont have to wait who know’s how long for them to get here.

Anyway, I’m thinking that’s all I’ve got for today!

Happy Thursday!

~Ashley
