It’s Going To Be A Long Summer…

Good thing I have a treadmill now, because this keeps happening…

img_3132-1.jpg

I can’t run outside in this!

Well, technically I could, but it probably wouldn’t end well for me. Especially not with that air quality warning. So I’m just gonna stick with my treadmill for now and hope that I’ll get at least one day this week that I’ll be able to run outside, because I’m not exactly confident in my ability to run anymore than 5 miles on the treadmill haha. I did 7 a few weeks ago, but I wanted to absolutely die by the time I was done. πŸ˜‚

Plus training for “Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days” officially starts on the 22nd of this month, and I’d really like to do most of those runs outside. Having the treadmill is nice, but it’s just not the same as running on the road. And since both half marathons I’m doing in November on on the road (well, part of one is on a paved trail πŸ˜‰ ), I know it would be best to do a pretty good majority of my running on the roads. But if this weather keeps up I’m gonna have to suck it up and run on the treadmill. I’d rather do that than risk my health by running outside in dangerous weather conditions. Says the girl who intentionally runs during thunderstorms and has an absolute blast running on ice haha. But for real though, I’m really sensitive to the heat and I have asthma. It’s not bad, but I still have to be careful when the air quality sucks.

So I’m not exactly thrilled about the weather and the prospect of starting out my half marathon training mostly on the treadmill. But at least I have that option now! If we would have had this kind of weather last summer, before I had the treadmill, I’d have been completely screwed. Sure I’ve got the stationary bike, but that probably wouldn’t really help that much. But anyway, I haven’t really been completely stuck inside. Luke and I have been going for little walks in the evening, right around sunset, so it’s not too crazy hot out. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still hot, humid, and gross out. But it’s decent enough to go for short walks in. I’m not confident enough to actually run in it though haha. But at the very least I’m getting outside and moving around a little bit.

I’m currently dreaming of chilly October nights.Β πŸ‚πŸŒ™πŸ¦‡πŸŽƒ

What really sucks about this weather is that while we’ve had plenty of heat, we’ve had hardly any rain. Like, it’s for real been weeks since we’ve gotten any rain, and the last time we did it really wasn’t much. So I’ve been kinda struggling to keep our garden going. All of our plants are just wilty and sun burnt. But I have gotten a pretty decent amount of strawberries and blueberries! I think I’m getting towards the end of those plants producing though. I’ve got 3 nice little watermelons growing, my peaches are slowly starting to get bigger, and my zucchini plants are producing like crazy! And my tomatoes are finally starting to get ripe! The plants have had little green fruit on them for a while now, but it’s been so crazy hot that it’s taking forever for them to turn red. I picked a whole bunch of nice little cherry tomatoes yesterday though!

We’ve also been keeping the tiny raptors outside for the last week or so. They’re finally big enough to keep out in the coop, and obviously we haven’t had to worry about it being too cold for them! I run out there to check on them several times a day though. I don’t want them getting too hot. But so far they seem to be doing really well!!

img_3060-1

They’re getting moved back inside this weekend though, but only for a little bit. Our family trip to Branson, Mo is next week and we don’t want them outside while we’re gone. Luckily they’ll only actually be on their own for 3 full days. Luke and I are leaving Kansas on the 16th, probably in the late morning. First we have to drop the dogs off at a kennel. I grew up working in a kennel, so obviously I know they’ll be fine, but they’ve never been boarded before, so I know they’re gonna be completely freaked out. Poor babies… Luckily the’re all going to be kept in the same kennel run together, so I think that will help. I’m going to make it very clear that I do not want them separated. Sometimes they growl and snap at each other and when they play it can look like they’re actually fighting, but they’re not. They just work things out between each other like that.Β  And if you know dogs then you probably know that, but some people tend to freak out the second teeth start snapped at each other. But anyway, then we’ll be in Branson the 17th, 18th, and 19th, and then we’re driving back home on the 20th. It’s only a 4 hour drive, so I think if we leave early enough we’ll be there in time to pick up the dogs before the kennel closes. If not then I guess they’ll just have to spend another night there.

Anyway, I got the dogs’ vet records for the kennel this morning and I’ve kinda sorta started packing for this trip. Haha I guess I should get on that, huh? I mean, I’ve made a list and pretty much know everything that Luke and I are gonna need, so that counts for something, right? We’ll both probably still wait until the night before we leave to actually pack. πŸ˜‰

But that’s all for today! How’s the weather where you are? Hopefully better that it is here in Kansas…

Your treadmill bound friend,

~Ashley

Weekly Recap: July 2nd-8th, 2018

Hello and happy Sunday, friends!! πŸ™‚

So, this week my weekly recap is going to be a little bit different, because, well, I only ran once this week. And aside from that one run and a lot of walking, I haven’t done much else to supplement my running fitness or anything like that. Honestly I’ve just needed a break! The crazy heat wave we got last week has subsided a little bit. We haven’t had any more excessive heat warnings or anything like that, but it’s still been pretty hot out and that just completely wears me out. I needed a break from super early mornings, toughing it out on the treadmill, and from just constantly worrying about how I was going to get in a decent amount of miles for the week. That was all just getting too exhausting, so I took a break. πŸ™‚

That being said, I’ve still had a pretty busy week! Obviously the 4th of July was on Wednesday, it was Luke’s birthday on Friday, and we’ve been walking around like crazy because both Luke and I have been hardcore playing Pokemon Go again haha. So let’s recap this week, shall we? πŸ˜‰

Monday:Β

On Monday I woke up feeling tired and dreading the thought of even lacing up my running shoes. At that point I figured I probably just needed an extra rest day so I decided not to run. Although that evening Luke and I walked around the neighborhood and caught Pokemon on our phones.

Tuesday:Β

  • 1 treadmill mile

I hopped on the treadmill on Tuesday with the intent to do a few miles, but after one I was just done. Running on the treadmill is hard. Probably more so mentally than physically, and mentally, I was feeling a bit burnt out. So after that one mile I hopped right back off the treadmill and called it good. That’s when I decided I probably needed a little break from running haha.

Luke had a softball game on Tuesday night, but after he was done at that we were back at it with the Pokemon thing. We stayed out until 2 am taking over the gyms in our town and catching stuff. Excessive? Yes. Totally worth it? Absolutely!

img_2947

Wednesday:

So since we were up until 2 in the morning the night before, we didn’t wake up until 9:30 am on the 4th. Once we did though we were crazy busy! First we brought the chicks outside and put them in the coop, so they could run around out there for the day. We also did a little bit of work/maintenance on the chicken coop. After that we took the dogs to the park so they could run around a little bit. It was pretty hot out though, so we didn’t stay there long. So we brought the dogs home, checked on the chicks to make sure they were doing alright outside, then drove to Walmart and picked up a few things. Did some work around the house after we got back from the store, and then got ready for the evening’s festivities.

We ended up going to some 4th of July event at school with my brother-in-law, his girlfriend, and her kids. They made it sound like this super awesome thing with lots of games, activities, and live music. But the games were all for little kids (and didn’t look very fun for them either), there were no activities for adults, and the live music sucked. So we literally sat at the playground for 3 hours and watched her kids play. It was highly disappointing. And on top of all of that, there were a bunch of people out there vaping, including my brother-in-law and his girlfriend. You couldn’t really go anywhere without walking through a cloud or two of nasty vape shit which is kind of a problem for me, because I have asthma and that stuff really bothers me. And the people who vape don’t seem to give a shit if they’re hitting a bunch of other people with the gross clouds of fruit scented chemicals because “it’s just water vapor”. Bullshit. It’s a lot more than just water vapor… And some dude kept walking in front of me at the playground and kept blowing it right in my face. So that was fucking great. I spent the next two days coughing, hacking, and feeling like shit because people who vape are inconsiderate assholes who don’t give a shit if their vape clouds are bothering other people.

But at least the fireworks were decent.

Thursday:Β

I didn’t do much on Thursday. I felt too gross after being exposed to all of that vape nastiness the day before.

Friday:

The 6th was Luke’s 27th birthday! Yay!!

It was also another eventful day! We woke up at 6 am so we could get in the crazy long line for the DMV before the place was even open, because Luke’s driver’s license expired that day. Seriously. We got there at 6:30 in the morning, half an hour before it was even open, and there were at least 40 people in line ahead of us. But Luke got it taken care of, at 8:40 am we finally walked out of the DMV with Luke’s temporary ID (because Kansas mails them to you? In Illinois they printed them out right there so you didn’t have to wait for them). Once that was taken care of we went and got some breakfast and then went to the trail that I used to run on everyday when we lived in the apartment. Luke wanted to play Pokemon Go for his birthday, so we spent over 3 hours on that trail walking around haha. Even though it was crazy hot, it was a lot of fun, and we got a lot done in our games.

At around 2 pm we left the trail, went to Aldi to get groceries and pick up some stuff to grill for Luke’s birthday dinner. His brother, his girlfriend, her kids, and their two dogs came over that night to celebrate. But before they did Luke made sure his brother knew that they couldn’t vape at our house anymore. I was still coughing pretty bad that day and was kinda struggling walking around on the trail earlier. So luckily they FINALLY listened to him and they didn’t (trust me, this was not the first time both of them have been asked politely not to do it around me. But my brother-in-law’s girlfriend literally told me that she usually doesn’t think about it or try to keep it away from other people. That is exactly what I was talking about before…). Anyway, we all ended up having a good night! My next door neighbor came over too because, when doesn’t she come over? πŸ˜‰ Haha we don’t mind though, she’s a cool kid. So we all ate ribs and cake, listened to music and watched the kids dance to Baby Shark several times haha, played corn hole, played with the dogs and chickens, and played with silly string, confetti cannons, and glow sticks. It was a good night. πŸ™‚

Saturday:

Saturday was relatively uneventful. I spent quite some time picking up the aftermath from Luke’s birthday party though haha.

Sunday:

So who’s tired of hearing about Pokemon Go yet? Haha because well, there was an event thingy today where squirtles appeared very frequently from 1-4pm. There’s a pokestop that I can reach in my backyard, so I spent two hours sitting out there with a lure on that stop, catching a buch of squirtles! I ended up with 1 shiny blastoise, a regular blastoise, a a special sunglasses wearing squirtle (squirtle squad, anyone????), and a shiny squirtle. But since Luke had to work today I’m gonna trade him the regular blastoise and the shiny squirtle.

But anyway, I also spent quite a bit of time cleaning the house today (because if I’m not gonna run then I might as well clean πŸ˜‰ ) and ready Game Of Thrones. Haha I guess it’s been a nerdy day, but it was great! πŸ™‚

I think I’ve had a successful almost no running week! Honesty I feel soooo much better today! I’m actually looking forward to running tomorrow, so we’ll see how that goes!

Anyway, I hope everyone had a good week!

Easter Weekend Shenanigans

Woohoo! I’m finally able to really use my right hand again!!! πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ˜„

I got bit by a dog on Monday while Luke, the dogs, and I were in Illinois visiting our families. Yeah, it was totally my fault and I have hard feelings towards the dog. I shouldn’t have grabbed her when she bolted out the door…

But I’ll get to that story eventually! First let’s talk about all of the fun Luke and I managed to squeeze into our small amount of time in Illinois! πŸ˜‰

So, early last week Luke found out he got Easter Sunday off of work, so on a whim he kinda decided to take a vacation day for the following Monday so we could go visit our families. He had to work on Saturday though, so we’re only going up have a very small amount of time there, but we sure managed to use that time well!

On Saturday I spent the day doing laundry, dishes, bathing the dogs, packing for our trip, and just getting everything ready in general for us to be gone for a few days. I’m pretty sure I went over all of that in this post. πŸ˜‰Β Anyway, Saturday evening when Luke got home from work I was ready to go! He quickly changed, we packed the car, loaded up the dogs and started making our way to Illinois. It takes about 5 hours to get from our house to Luke’s dad’s in Illinois. It’s a boring drive, but it’s a lot better than the 11 hours that it takes to get to my mom and dad’s in Longmont Colorado! πŸ˜‰ Finn sure got comfy on our way there haha.

We got to Luke’s dad’s house around 11:30 Saturday night and as per our new tradition that we started on Christmas, Luke, his dad, oldest brother, and myself stayed up until 2:30 am playing Cards Against Humanity haha. Luke’s dad bought an expansion pack so we had all sorts of new cards to play with. It was a lot of fun. What wasn’t fun was sleeping on their pullout couch. It doesn’t feel very sturdy, sinks in, and there’s not a lot of room. Luke and I fit on it fine, but when you have 3 dogs trying to also sleep on it, well, things get kinda crowded. I think I ended up getting like 2 hours of sleep that night. Fun! πŸ˜‰

The next morning Luke’s youngest brother woke us up by coming into the living room where we were sleeping, and slowly getting closer and closer the the pullout couch. He’d take a step, stop, look at us for a little bit, then take another step, stop, you get the picture. That freaked Finn out. He forced his way in between Luke and I and was growling at Luke’s brother. After a few minutes of that we had to get up and let all of the dogs outside. Not long after that Luke’s dad and step mom came downstairs and started making breakfast. It seems like they like to do biscuits and gravy for holiday breakfasts but they know I’m not a fan, so they made me a nice sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich instead. πŸ™‚ So we ate, talked, Luke took a shower, his youngest brother explained pokemon to me while Luke’s dad and I were trying to talk about other stuff (haha sorry dude, but I could absolutely school you on pokemon! Next time we go there I’ll have to bring my DS and battle him. πŸ˜‰ ). And all the while Finn stood on a wood pile, looking longingly inside at us hahaha.

This is the correct way to bathroom selfie, right? Haha just messing around after our 5 hour car ride.

After Luke had showered and ate we drove to my old house so we could do some target practice. My mom and dad haven’t sold it yet so we’re still able to go there, although I don’t like going. The farm is sold so all of the land belongs to someone else now. And they’ve changed a lot of things and it just makes me sad. Haha the whole time we were there Luke kept telling me one day we’ll have our own land to do what we want with.

img_0697-1

My hand prints and my brother’s footprints (that you can barely see) in our old driveway. Crazy to think it was 18 years ago when we did that…

Anyway, Luke and I set up our target, technically on the people who bought the farm’s property, but they weren’t there so no big deal haha. πŸ˜‰ And did a little bit of shooting. It was cold and windy so we didn’t stay long, but it’s been a looooong time since I’ve shot a gun. Glad to see I can still hit a target! πŸ™‚

After we had our fun we drove to my grandma’s new house. She had a little Easter party so my great Aunt and Uncle (my Auntie and Uncle Pa. πŸ™‚ ), my mom, brother, and Uncle Ken (my mom’s brother) were all there. Luke said hi to everyone but had to leave because he had to go to his Grandma Becky’s Easter lunch. I was right about my grandma and Uncle Ken cooking though! They made an amazing ham, German green beans, cauliflower, potato salad, and my grandma made the BEST desserts; peach cobbler and a cheesecake. It was a fantastic lunch! After we’d all eaten my Aunt Lori showed up (she’s my Auntie and Uncle Pa’s daughter). So we all got to visit for a while. It started sleeting though, so my Auntie, Uncle Pa, and Aunt Lori had to leave before the weather got too bad. After they had gone my Grandma, Uncle, and I watched the Jesus Christ Super Star thing that was on TV. I’ve never actually seen Jesus Christ Super Star before, but I really enjoyed it! And Alice Cooper being in it was pretty spiffy too! And after that we were all pretty tired so we all went to bed.

So I spent my Easter shooting, eating, and hanging out with family. It was nice. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Monday morning Luke was up bright and early! Half an hour earlier than me, which doesn’t often happen haha. But we had things we wanted to do and we had to leave later that day, so getting up early made sense. πŸ™‚

First Luke and his brother came and picked up me and my brother and we drove back to the old house so our brothers could do a little bit of shooting. Again we didn’t spend a lot of time there. It was even colder and now it was wet and icy from the sleet the night before. We all had fun though. Luke’s brother doesn’t exactly get to shoot a lot so he was happy to get to, even though I kept having to remind him of gun safety. πŸ˜‰ And my brother got to show off a little bit and I never had to yell at him haha. But remember that both of us have been shooting basically since we could walk. πŸ˜‰

img_0702

This photo is actually from Sunday, but whatever. πŸ˜‰

After our second round of target practice, we drove back to Luke’s dad’s, picked up his youngest brother and went to the St. Louis City Museum. I haven’t been there since Iw as in like, second grade, and everyone else had never been, so we figured it would be fun to do something different. If you’ve never been to the City Museum, it’s basically a art exhibit/giant playground. With just a tiny bit of actual museum stuff thrown into the mix. The outdoor stuff was still all closed because it’s still too cold out, but there was still plenty to do inside! We played on skate ramps, climbed a crazy amount of stairs, went down a 10 story slide, climbed on stuff, explored an indoor cave, and ate overpriced pizza. It was a lot of fun. πŸ™‚

After the City museum we dropped my brother off at my grandma’s, dropped Luke’s younger brother off at his house, then Luke, his other brother, and I went to Barns and Noble, and then to Luke’s Grandma Wilma’s house. That’s when I got bit by the dog. When we got there her dogs bolted out the door, she said they’d run away, so I grabbed one of them, and she got scared, and bit my right hand a couple of times. Totally my fault. I shouldn’t of grabbed her like that. But she left one pretty decent puncture in my wrist, a few scratches, and my whole hand was swollen. Luke’s grandma cleaned up the wound, and put some antibacterial stuff on it along with a band aid. It hurt like hell but we figured it didn’t require a hospital visit. But anyway, we hung out with her for a while, but it was getting to be around 3:30 pm and Luke and I still needed to drive home. So we left her house, went to Luke’s dad’s said goodbye to everyone there, got Lily and Luke’s stuff. Drove to my Grandma’s, got Finn and Dean, and my stuff, said by to everyone there, got into the car, and began our journey home.

The drive home was slightly more miserable than the drive there. Our car doesn’t have any heat and it was cold and rainy out, so we got to spend 5 hours shivering. It definitely wasn’t as bad as our drive to Colorado over Thanksgiving though! The temperatures were in the negatives for a lot of that drive! This time it was above freezing at least. And we made it home around 9:15 pm without any real issues, so that was good. πŸ™‚

img_0744-1

Haha so yeah, like I said, we squeezed in quite a lot in the short amount of time we had there! Of course I ended up getting hurt, but at least it was during our last few hours there haha. And my hand is healing up quite nicely at this point! It’s still kinda sore and a little bit swollen, but I can actually use it again which is nice! Although after typing all of this it’s kinda hurting again. πŸ˜‰ And I’ve been able to keep the wound clean and it seems to be healing very well, so I’ll gladly take it! Cat bites tend to get infected more than dogs bites do, but still, you can never be too careful about that kind of thing. And I only missed out on a few days of running, and that was mostly just because we were traveling. But I’ll talk about that in my weekly recap on Sunday.

Whew! Alrighty then! I didn’t think this post was going to be so long haha. But I guess I should have seen that coming. We did do a lot of stuff. But, that is all for now!

I hope everyone is having a fantastic Friday!!

You’re very injury prone friend,

~Ashley

Easter Weekend

Happy Saturday, friends!!

(Just warning you that there is a picture of a bloody dog paw in this post. If you don’t want to see that don’t scroll down)

Yesterday Luke and I were quite busy, running around all over the place and trying to get some stuff done. Luke had to work today but was off yesterday and is off on Easter Sunday so we decided that today after he got off of work that we were going to drive to Illinois so we could hang out with some of our family over the holiday.

So, like I said, we spent a lot of time trying to do stuff yesterday. He cleaned out his car, I cleaned the chicken brooder and rabbit cages, then we went to several stores to get stuff we needed, and just did a bunch of boring adult stuff haha. Once we got all of that taken care of we were going to bring the dogs to the dog park so they could run around and burn off some energy since the car ride to Illinois is about 5 hours long. So we packed up the dogs, drove 40 minutes to the bigger park that we go to, started unloading them from the car, and noticed that the backseat was covered in blood… Somehow in the 40 minutes it took us to get to the park, Lily had ripped out one of her dew claws. We seriously have no idea how the heck she managed to do that! Her dew claws aren’t even that big. But I suppose that’s just proof that it’s not a bad idea to have them removed when they’re puppies. Finn’s breeder had his removed, and before I didn’t really think much of it but after yesterday’s indecent I’m very glad we wont have to worry about anything like that happening to him. But obviously Lily still has most of hers, and so does Dean.

Anyway, so we couldn’t go to the park with Lily hurt and bleeding all over the place so we had to drive to a nearby Walgreen’s instead and did some first aid in the parking lot. Luckily I’m pretty well versed in first aid. I’m a hug klutz and am constantly having to fix myself. Plus it doesn’t really seem to be bothering Lily. She still wanted to go to the park and once we finally got home we put the chickens outside in their coop and she spent a lot of time running around the yard and keeping an eye on them. So at least she’s not too hurt. But Lily is a tough farm dog. A little foot injury like that isn’t going to slow her down!

img_0670

So today was also just a lot of me getting things ready for us to be gone for a few days as well. I made sure the cats, rabbits, ferrets, and chickens had enough food and water. Since we’re only going to be gone for like, 2 ish days we really don’t need anyone to check on them. I did some cleaning around the house. It was basically a disaster though and there was no way I was going to have time to clean it very well before we left, which sucks. It’s always nice coming back to a clean house… But I did do a piss ton of laundry. A lot of that actually consisted of stuff I needed to pack, but whatever. πŸ˜‰ And cleaned all of our dirty dishes, so at the very least we’ll have clean clothes/dishes to come home to. I did try to minimize the disaster area though and picked up, wiped down counters and tables, and did little stuff like that.

img_0652

They like to perch on the sides of the brooder. Luckily they haven’t taken to escaping and wandering around the room they’re in. Yet…

I also had to bathe Dean and Finn. They were both terrible messes since it’s been really wet and muddy here in Kansas. Luckily they don’t put up much of a fight when it comes to getting bathed, but they definitely don’t like it and they don’t exactly make it easy. I got it done though and they’re both pretty darn clean! For now.

img_0678

The two troublemakers; Finn and Dean.Β

Anyway, so by the time Luke got home from work, around 6:30 pm I had everything ready to go! He had picked up dinner on his way home from work, so we ate, packed up the car, made the dogs go pee, loaded them into the car, and then hit the road! Which is where we’ve been for about an hour now. Fun times! πŸ˜‰ But the drive to Illinois is a lot more more pleasant than the drive to Colorado where my parent’s and siblings live. That takes about 11 hours and is sooooo boring. At least driving to Illinois only takes about 5 hours. So we should be getting there around 1 am. That’s not too bad.

Happy Easter! I hope everyone has a great weekend!!

My First Time In Nebraska, Home Sweet Home, and New Addition To My Backyard Farm!!

My brother and I left Colorado Friday evening around 5 pm and ended up going on a little adventure haha. To avoid taking the toll roads that are in Colorado and Kansas, my brother ended up going just a little too far north and we ended up in Nebraska. That was pretty funny. When we crossed the state line and saw the “welcome to Nebraska” sign we looked at each other and asked how the heck did we end up here? Luckily we were still heading east, so that’s all that mattered haha. So we drove through Nebraska, into Iowa for a little bit (that was my brother’s first time in Iowa haha I’ve been trough there when Luke and I went to visit his mom in Minnesota), down into Missouri, and then finally into Kansas. We ended up adding an extra hour to our trip, but neither of us were too worried about that. Although it did kinda suck that we finally got to my house around 6 am.

We brought my mom’s dog Bella with us. My mom is currently in Illinois with my grandma and my brother needed to get some stuff in Illinois from my dad, so that all ended up working out well. She road on my lap the whole way to Kansas and then my brother had her in a crate for the 5 hour trip to Illinois from my house. Apparently she did well on that ride too. I’m not particularly a fan of little dogs, but she is sweet. πŸ™‚ Although my dogs weren’t too sure what to think of her haha. Especially Finn. I don’t think he’s ever seen such a small dog before.

Apparently leaving the dogs/cats/rabbits/ferrets/Luke all alone for a week wasn’t a great idea. Apparently Luke spend the whole week living off of frozen food, trying to keep the dogs under control, and they all spent the week wrecking the house haha. So I spent yesterday scrubbing floors, doing laundry, washing dishes, and lots of other cleaning. Fun times…But someone needed to do it. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, yesterday Luke and I started our next new and exciting adventure! We are expanding our backyard farm with the addition of 5 new chicks!! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Luke bought/built a chicken coop on Friday while I was still in Colorado, and then last night we went to Tractor Supply and got a brood box, heat lamp, a feeder/water thing, feed, vitamins, and of course the chicks themselves! Originally we were going to get 4 Isa Brown chicks, but they only had 3 of them left. So we got them and 2 other chicks of a different breed. Not gonna lie though, I don’t remember what they are haha. That’s not really important though, they’re good for laying and that’s what we want!

So we got our new babies home and set up in their brood box and slowly started introducing the dogs to them. Luckily Lily grew up on a farm and has some formal training, so she knows how to handle and how to behave around livestock, so we weren’t too worried about her. Haha she was actually pretty excited to see them! She used to herd my dad’s chickens all the time! Dean doesn’t want anything to do with them, which isn’t surprising. Dean has very little in the way of herding instinct and is pretty wary of anything new. Finn was the one we were most worried about. He’s got very impressive herding instincts but he is still young and very immature. Plus he really likes to nip at faces, which would be really good if he was working on cows, but obviously not so good when we’re talking about tiny little chicks. He ended up surprising us though and was very calm and never once showed his teeth to them. He has absolutely no clue what they are but you can see that he wants to herd them so badly haha. But luckily it’s looking like the dogs wont be an issue at all, so that’s good. πŸ™‚

So far the babies seem to be adjusting well. They handled meeting the dogs perfectly fine and they seem to have done well over night. They’ve been eating, drinking, pooping, and pecking around their brood box. So I’d say so far so good!! πŸ™‚ They’ve got to stay inside in their brood box for several weeks, but once they have all their feathers they get to be moved outside into the coop. Well, as long as it’s warm enough outside. So that’s all pretty exciting stuff! And before too long we’ll have our own eggs! I’m super excited about that! Like just about everything, home raised eggs are sooo much tastier/nutritious than store bought eggs. πŸ™‚

And pretty soon we’ll be tilling our garden plots and getting ready to plant some things! As sad as I always am to see winter go, spring is a pretty exciting time around here. πŸ™‚

Oh and I’ve currently got 2 5k’s on my scheduled to look forward to! Next Sunday I’m going to be doing a Whiskey 5k with my dad. That’s going to be a lot of fun!! My dad and I always have fun together but I think this is going to be extra exciting haha. It’s my dad’s first official 5k, we get a super spiffy pint glass at the end, and Jack Stacks is providing brunch for all of the finisher’s which is awesome! Jack Stacks has some very tasty food!! πŸ™‚

This is basically the perfect 5k for my dad. His last name is Martin (and mind was too before I got married haha), he basically collects neat glasses like this, and he likes whiskey. So like I said, perfect! πŸ˜‰

And then in May I’m doing the Running With The Cows 5k again. I’m really looking forward to doing that! I had a lot of fun at that race back in 2016 and this year I even plan on training for it! I’ve never done an actual 5k training program before so that should be interesting. Training for that actually starts tomorrow, so I’ll definitely keep you guys updated on how that goes! I’m hoping I’ll be able to shave off a little bit of time from current 5k times, so hopefully I’ll be able to make that happen! πŸ™‚

That’s all I’ve got for now! No weekly recap for this week. I pretty much posted everyday while I was in Colorado and I really didn’t do much running anyway haha. Plus I’ve still got a bunch of cleaning to do and I’ve got to tend to my flock of chickens! πŸ˜‰

Happy Sunday!!

March 1st, 2018

The last few days have been kinda boring here in Colorado. Mostly because my dad and brother have to work, but also because my stomach has been kinda bothering me. Probably because I’ve lived off of Chinese food and pizza since Tuesday… As fun as that sounds it’s not doing my body any good. Haha my options were very limited though. But my dad and I went to the store last night and got stuff to make smoothies, Super Hero muffins, and all sort of good stuff like that. 😁

So I ended up spending quite a bit of time in the kitchen, but first I had to get a run in! πŸ˜‰ I hadn’t run in 2 days, so I figured I should today. I didn’t feel like going far though so “short and speedy” was the name of the game today. Although I’m not sure of you could actually call what I did speedy haha. Dealing with the elevation is still pretty tough (I’ve been told it can take several months to actually acclimate to it, and I’m definitely not going to be here for that long), so I just went with what felt hard and did 2 miles of intervals. So the elevation seems to wear me out pretty quick and like I said, I’m not feeling great from all of the junk food, so I ate a Honey Stinger waffle before this run. Not something I’d typically do before such a short run, but I like to think it helped. πŸ˜‰

After I got done with my run I showered and realized just how tired I was. Haha have I mentioned that the elevation wears me out? πŸ˜‰ So I napped for a little bit and then began my cooking/cleaning adventures. This morning my dad had started making this vegetable and chicken soup. It’s got butter nut squash, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, onions, beets, and obviously chicken in it. Super healthy, very tasty, but not very visually appealing haha. But anyway, I finished making that. All I had to do was run it through the blender, so I had the easy job. It took FOREVER though. Plus it was a super messy process, so cleaning up once I was done took a while too. I also made Super Hero muffins for my dad to try! Well, it’s more like a Super Hero cake, since they don’t have a muffin tin. But still just as tasty! Also less visually appealing than actual muffins though haha. πŸ˜‰

Other than running, napping, and cooking, I also spend quite a bit of time doing laundry, walking Niko, playing with Bella, and cleaning up around the apartment. So basically normal everyday things that I’d usually do at home and for different dogs/people haha. But it’s more exciting because it’s all in Colorado, right? πŸ˜‰

Anyway, earlier today I told my dad about a whisky 5k that’s held in Martin City (which is in the KC area where I live). He told me that’s literally the perfect 5k for him, since he loves whisky and his last name is Martin (and mine was too, before I got married haha). And every finisher gets a medal and a pint glass and since my dad kinda collects pint glasses (and other fancy glasses), I told him that we were gonna have to do it together. So we are! I’m so freaking stoked!! This’ll be his first official 5k and the first time I’ve had someone to run with during a race! It’s gonna be so much fun! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

My dad’s gonna have to get a real pair of running shoes though. On Thanksgiving when we ran around the lake near his apartment he did it in work boots. Yeah, he said that wasn’t fun haha. I told him to go to a specialty running store and have them help him find a pair, so hopefully he has a chance to do that. I mean, he’s only got 10 days to get that done haha.

Whew! I’m super duper stoked right now!

I hope you’ve had a good Thursday!

February 27th, 2018

Last night I had an interesting experience with Niko. I have been sleeping on the couch in the living room and Niko usually sleeps on the floor out there. So last night before I went to bed, I’d gotten up to get a drink of water, and while I was up I noticed Niko’s water bowl was empty so I filled that up as well. While I was doing that he started eating out of his food bowl and growling at me. So at that point I was like “oh shit”. Because his particular breed is very aggressive and can be quite vicious. I mean, he is a Russian bear dog after all (also known as a Caucasian Shepard and Caucasian ovcharka). Plus that dog only weighs 28 pounds less than I do, and has teeth meant for ripping, tearing, and killing. So obviously I was pretty nervous.

I don’t usually get too worried when a dog gets aggressive, but look at this thing! He was literally bred to be a killing machine! Don’t get me wrong though, he can be very sweet and I don’t mind being around him or handling him when he’s in a good mood.

After a minute or so he got tired of me being so close to his food dish so he picked it up and moved it to the living room. I tired talking to him nicely, was being very calm, and moving slowly, but every time I took a step from the kitchen into the living room he’d start growling and barking at me. And I didn’t want to take any chances because of the reasons I’ve stated above.

Luckily after about 5 minutes of being stuck in the kitchen my brother came out of his bedroom to use the bathroom, so one he was done I yelled down the hallway for him to come help me haha. And of course Niko didn’t care if he walked into the living room (although my dad said usually it’s my brother that he growls at). My brother walked in there, pet him, gave him a treat, and took his food bowl away, but Niko still wouldn’t let me into the living room. So I gave him a treat, but he still wasn’t having it. He got pissy every time I tried to leave the kitchen. So eventually my brother just let me sleep in his room and he slept in the living room with Niko. Haha but of course this morning Niko came barging into my brother’s room and wanted to be my friend again. Probably because he wanted me to take him outside hahaha. He’s a very moody dog.

But anyway, he’s fine with me again today haha.

So I am freaking sore from running in the ice/snow yesterday. Probably because I haven’t really done much running since I hurt my toe. Although that’s doing a lot better now. And the elevation here is wearing me out haha. So I figured today would be a good day for a rest day. Plus my dad and brother had to work today and my mom’s not really into hiking or outdoors stuff. So I guess it kinda worked out to not really do much today.

It was super nice outside today thought. So later in the morning I ended up walking 2 miles on the trail near my parents’ apartment. It’s so pretty out there it’s the views of Longs Peak and the lake. Plus unlike my mom, sitting inside all day isn’t an option. So my little walk made me feel better. 😊

Anyway, last night we went to Walmart and had quite the debacle. We got all of our food/groceries and we went to the checkout, got everything scanned/bagged but then both my mom’s and brothers’s checks got declined (apparently that happens a lot with they’re bank). We couldn’t get ahold of my dad, so we drove back to their apartment, but he didn’t want to go to Walmart (he had worked all day), so we never got our groceries. Last night for dinner I had a cream cheese/apricot preserve sandwich. Not bad, but Luke felt bad for me so he had an order of Pad Tia sent to me for lunch. He is literally the best. πŸ˜„

I suppose that pretty much sums up my day. Haha it was kinda really boring. Hopefully tomorrow will be more eventful. πŸ˜‰

Happy Tuesday!
