Thursday Things

I feel like there was quite a bit of good feminine vibes and womanly comradery on the post about periods I wrote on Tuesday. It was pretty great! I deffinitely think that’s something that needs to be talked about more! Although one person didn’t seem to like the quote from Billie Joe Armstrong that I included in the post. This one, to be exact!

img_9069-1

I don’t have the exact source for this photo, but I found it on Pintrest. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ah, I love it! It’s one of my favorite quotes. ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, someone called it “crude” and stated that they don’t think Billie Joe Armstrong will be remembered as a musician. Not gonna lie, I kinda laughed to myself about that. Billie Joe is the singer/song writer/guitarist in Green Day, one of the biggest rock bands in the world, with over 85 million records sold world wide, andย  who just so happened to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2015 during their first year of eligibility. So you’re right, Billie Joe Armstrong wont be remembered as a musician. He’ll be remembered as aย legendaryย musician.

Haha I’m well aware that making that argument is kinda pointless and that it really doesn’t matter. But I like talking about Green Day and I’m gonna jump at any opportunity I have to do it! They are my favorite.

But anyway, the point I want to make here is that obviously everyone is different. We all have different tastes, opinions, and feelings about certain things. And that’s totally awesome! Yay for being different and unique individuals with our own personal thoughts and feelings! I really don’t care if you don’t like Green Day, punk rock (and I’m warning everyone now, I refuse to get into the argument about what is or isn’t “punk”, so don’t try to start it with me), and the rebellious “fuck ’em all”, “give ’em hell” attitude that comes with things like that. I think it’s fucking great and it feel right and real to me! But that just doesn’t do it for some people and I get that! But I don’t understand the point of making negative comments about the things other people like just because you don’t like it (unless the thing that person likes is causing actual harm to someone, but that’s a whole other issue). Seriously! Why?? I don’t get it. You know what I’m not a fan of? Cheesy romance novels. But I’m not gonna go around telling people who read and enjoy them that they’re terrible books and that it’s a shame that they talk about them.

Whatever. The other point I’m trying to make here is that I’m not going to change what I like, do, or post here onย my blog, just because someone doesn’t like it. Not gonna happen. I’m gonna keep doing me, and if you don’t like it, you can kindly fuck off.

I know that came off kind of aggressive, but come on, Iย hadย to do it! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Seriously though, if you don’t like what I talk about or post here, then don’t read it. I feel like it should be as simple as that.

Anyways, We’ve been having some kind of weird combination of winter and spring going on here in Kansas. Earlier this week we got a little bit of snow, but today it’s 50 degrees and sunny and I already miss the winter…Although I can’t deny the appeal of a warmer sunny day, at least not all the time. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I didn’t end up running today. Mostly because yesterday it was in the 30’s and I was super excited about that, so my run ended up being a little bit harder than it should have been haha. Luckily that didn’t seem to re irritate my sore foot so that’s great! But I also didn’t want to push it haha. So I ended up spending a lot of time walking my dogs instead. Obviously that made them all super happy, so that was a definite win for today!

I also spent a little bit of time on my yoga mat, stretching and rolling out some sore spots. Not my favorite thing in the world to do, but I always feel so much better when I do it. Plus like I’ve mentioned before, I’m trying to do all of the little extra things to hopefully prevent me from obtaining any injuries. Because oh man am I good at getting those! ๐Ÿ˜‰ I probably should have done a little bit of strength work as well, but eh, I’m gonna stick with one boring thing at a time.

img_9242

40 minutes of stretching/foam rolling goodness.

After that was done I spent the rest of my afternoon working on a few other blog posts and attempting to clean my house. Haha if you saw my post about mud a few days ago, well, most of my house still looks like that. Well, kinda. It’s notย asย bad anymore. But my backyard is currently a huuuge, muddy disaster, and the dogs just bring it all inside. Especially Finn and Dean. They like to spend most of their time outside running around, wrestling and herding each other. So they’re just covered head to tail in mud and dirt…Sometimes I legit just want to build a kennel out there and just have them live out there whenever it gets gross outside. That probably won’t happen though. Doing stuff like that can get expensive. Plus they would probably spend all night barking at the stray cat that likes to wander around in the easement behind our backyard and I don’t think our neighbors would appreciate that haha. So yeah, when it’s muddy outside it gets muddy inside, and I end up spending an absurd amount of time sweeping/vacuuming/mopping up mud.

Along with dealing with all of that, last night Luke and I also started cleaning out my brother-in-law’s room since he doesn’t live here anymore, and boxing up all of the stuff he left behind (and there was a lot of it for some reason). And then we moved the rabbits and ferrets in there, and at some point Luke also wants to move our gecko in there as well. So now we have a whole room dedicated to our petting zoo haha. It’s kinda nice having them all in one place and all of their messes contained into a single room though. ๐Ÿ™‚ So I also had to do some hardcore scrubbing of the floors where their cages used to be. Whew! It definitely feels good having all of that taken care of! And now we have more room in our bedroom/kitchen since there aren’t animal cages in there anymore, and that’s pretty sweet!

Alrighty then! I think that’s all I’ve got for today!

Happy Friday eve!!

You’re Green Day obsessed, partially purple haired, totally punk rock (yeah probably not hahaha), blogger friend,

Fall Is Almost Here, Two Short Runs, An Injury Update, Compression Gear, and Another Furry Friend

First and foremost, #ThrowbackThursday anyone? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Ah man, throwback Thursday never ceases to amuse me. I just think it’s fun to take a look back at past life experiences, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they might be.

So, since fall is almost here and I’m so super duper excited about that, I went perusing through the camera roll on my phone this morning looking for the photos of my jack-o-lanterns from last year, because they were pretty darn spiffy if you ask me!!

I was so super excited about how the 13.1 pumpkin turned out! I was kinda worried about it because I thought it was going to be hard to tell what it was, but once it was lit up it looked pretty good! And look at all the hair I used to have!! Haha not gonna lie, looking back I kinda regret cutting it all off. But it was sooo much nicer not having to deal with all of that hot hair over the summer. But anyways, now I’ve got to figure out what I want to do with this years pumpkins! Haha obviously I’ve still got some time, but I take this stuff very seriously! ๐Ÿ˜‰ We’re starting to get close to my favorite time of year and I’m so super stoked!!

img_6248

TRUE!!!!!

So now that we’re into the middle of September we’re starting to experience a bit of fall like weather in the morning/evening. The highs in the afternoon have been in the 80’s though so that still kinda sucks, but we’ll get to the colder weather eventually. ๐Ÿ™‚ But anyways, the nice weather in the morning is really reallyย reallyย making me miss running. Fall running is the best running (except once winter rolls around, then I’ll spend all season telling you that winter running is the best ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) and right now I definitely feel like I’m missing out!!

I have managed to do two very short runs this week. 2 miles on Monday and 2 more miles on Wednesday. That’s definitely not the kind of running I should be doing considering that I’m supposed to be training for my 3rd half marathon, but at the moment it’s the only kind of running I can do. And it’s still totally better than not running at all!!

Unfortunately the 4 miles that I’ve run this week were not pain free miles. During both runs my knee started to ache a bit during the second mile and on Wednesday I felt it a little bit in my shin as well. That was no bueno…but it’s still not as bad as it was last month and I like to think it’s finally starting to get better. Healing this whole situation has definitely been a slow process, but I’m glad that it seems to be getting better without the help of a doctor. Because Iย reallyย didn’t want to have to go see one haha.

So I think I’ve mentioned before that I’ve been taking R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation) very seriously in order to get this thing taken care of. Obviously the rest has come in the form of not running, but I’ve also been trying to take it easy and walk a little less if it starts bothering me. I was icing it for a while but that doesn’t seem to be doing anything for it anymore. And honestly I’m pretty sure icing is really only effective for the first like, 48 hours or something like that after you’ve been injured (I’m not entirely sure about that though, so don’t quote me on it. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). So that brings me to compression and elevation. As far as elevation goes, I’ve just been propping my leg up with a pillow in the evening whenever i’m sitting down watching TV, but my compression game has definitely been VERY strong!

img_6164

I’m sporting a very old compression sock and a very new compression knee sleeve in this photo.

So Luke’s just as determined to get me healthy again as quickly as possible so he’s been making me experiment with some new gear haha. First he got me the knee sleeve pictured above. Oh boy does that thing work! I didn’t realize that my knee was actually hurting while I was walking until I started wearing this thing around haha (this right here is why I have to be super careful when it comes to injures. I have a ridiculous pain tolerance and sometimes I don’t notice that anythings going on until after it goes away and I start feeling normal again…). And after wearing it for about a week I was able to do my two short runs this week, which was obviously a huge improvement over not being able to run at all. ๐Ÿ™‚ So because I had quite a bit of success with the knee brace, Luke thought hey, if a little bit of compression worked, why not go with EVEN MORE compression. So he came home with a pair of full on compression tights for me the other day haha. I kinda wish he hadn’t spent so much money on me for this stuff, compression gear (especially these tights, holy shit) isn’t cheap…but I mean, they are some super spiffy looking tights. ๐Ÿ™‚

Processed with Rookie Cam

I’ve only worn them once, so at this point there’s really no telling if they made a difference, but they’re still super spiffy. ๐Ÿ™‚

So all of that actually came about because I had ordered myself a new pair of Zensah compression calf sleeves (like I said, my compression socks are really old, and I’ve had to cut the toes off of both pairs that I have because they make my toes uncomfortable, so I figured sleeves were the way to go. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) and a sports bra at some point last week, I think? The only problem with that is that Zensah’s warehouse is located in southern Florida so they had to close up shop and evacuate because of hurricane Irma, so I guess they’re not entirely sure when they’ll be able to ship out anything. And like, obviously that’s totally understandable and I don’t mind waiting, but Luke is not a patient person and apparently that applies to me as well, and that’s how I ended up with even more compression gear hahahahaha.

So like, I know compression gear is one of those things that some people absolutely swear by and other people just think is a placebo kinda thing, but it’s always seemed to work for me so I’m just gonna roll with it! ๐Ÿ™‚

Whew, alrighty then! Last on my agenda of this to talk about today is our newest furry friend! Everyone, meet Alfred!

img_6368

So kind of on a whim I guess, Luke decided that our other ferret, Bruce, needed a friend. So he went and got him one last night. Hahaha if you haven’t noticed, once Luke sets his mind on something he just goes and does it. And that’s how we ended up with another ferret. It’s really funny because everyone thinks all of the animals were my idea (because I’m the huge animal lover who was raised on a farm), but aside from the cats and Lily, Luke’s the one who went out and got the rest of them haha. I mean, I’m not complaining though. ๐Ÿ˜‰

At first we were both a little wary about introducing them to each other. Luckily we have two ferret cages so if it didn’t go well we could have kept them separate, but it looks like that’s not going to be a problem. They pretty much liked each other right off the bat and are already becoming fast friends. So I guess Luke was right, getting Bruce a friend was a good idea. And I mean, what good is Bruce Wayne without Alfred Pennyworth? ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_6385

Okey dokey then! That’s all I’ve got to talk about for today! I’ve been doing a terrible job at keeping up with everyone lately, so what’s going on with you? Are you excited about fall? Any up coming races, spiffy new gear, new furry friends, new PR’s, or are you sidelined with an injury as well?

Anyways, I hope everyone has a happy Friday eve, a great Friday tomorrow, and an even better weekend!

Thursday Things

Oh man, things definitively took an interesting turn Tuesday/yesterday!

So Tuesday night, Luke subbed on his boss’s softball team. Something he was very happy to do, as he isn’t on his own softball team this year. But in the second inning of the first game (it was a double header) he was trying to slide home but he ended up falling and hitting his head off the ground pretty hard. He said right afterwards he had tunnel vision for a few minutes and was a little bit disoriented. So he told his boss that there was a good chance that he was either going to be late to work on Wednesday or just may not come in at all. And since his boss saw him fall and heard the sound his head made when it hit the ground, he said that was absolutely fine.

So yesterday Luke slept until about 8 am (about 2 hours later than he usually gets up), but when he woke up he was a little bit dizzy. So after a little bit of debate with me (he for real got dressed and ready to go into work) I convinced him to stay home, because I really thought he needed a little bit of rest. But of course Luke is stubborn and couldn’t actually sit at home and rest. We ended up taking Finn to one dog park by himself, then we ran home, grabbed Lily and Dean, and then took all three of them to a different dog park haha. Luckily after walking around a little bit, Luke said he felt a lot better so maybe a little bit of moving around was good for him. ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_4950

Finn, Dean, and Lily. My babies are so pretty. ๐Ÿ™‚

After our second dog park adventure, we stopped at a Sprout’s, which is about 5 minutes from the dog park (and this dog park is about 30 minutes from our house). Originally just to get lunch, but we also ended up getting walnuts (we haven’t been to a Sprout’s for a while and forgot how great buying stuff in bulk can be hahaha), and water and disposable cups so we could give the dogs water, who we had left in the car. Yes, we did indeed leave the dogs in the car on a hot summer day, but we were also parked in the shade, and left the car running with the air conditioner on full blast. We also didn’t have our spare key, so we had to leave the doors unlocked, but our dogs are all super protective/territorial so we really weren’t worried about it. They were cool, comfortable, would keep the car from being stolen, and we were only in the store for a few minutes anyway.

img_4968

Side note; I tried kombucha for the first time yesterday. Not bad!!

Well whenever we were walking back out to the car, some lady was looking into our car windows, looking all worried, so Luke told me to go run out there before she decided to break a window or call the police. Now, I totally understand why someone would be worried about dogs locked in a car on a hot day if the car wasn’t running. Hell, I’d probably be one of the first people to go help the dogs. But again, OUR CAR WAS RUNNING AND THE AC WAS ON!! Trust me, they were absolutely fine!! And I know for a fact Lily was growling at her from the driver’s seat, and I have a feeling Dean and Finn have been growling at her from the back seat. So I ran up to the car, opened the door and told them they were all being good puppies. The lady didn’t look too happy, but she walked back to her car. Good riddance to her. People are too nosy sometimes, and if she would have tried anything I feel like one of the dogs would have nipped at/bitten her. Oh well, it all ended well, so that’s all that matters. ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, after all of that we went home, made some pickles, and then spent the rest of the day playing Story Of Seasons on our Nintendo 3DS’s. Good times! Plus I’m very glad that Luke spent several hours sitting and relaxing. ๐Ÿ™‚

So that was all yesterday. Today kinda ended up being pretty boring though. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I had intended to get up early and do a 5 mile run, but oh man I just couldn’t. I woke up at 5 and I was just so fucking tired (and after looking at my sleep chart thingy I can see why…). So I tried to go back to sleep (but I feel like I kept waking up a little bit), and eventually go up at 7:30. So there’s that, but I’m also crazy sore. Probably because of all of the work in the garden earlier this week. DOMS definitely caught up with me today haha. So today ended up being an impromptu rest day, but there was absolutely no way I running would have went well or have even been a good idea, so I’m not too worried about it. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_4982

So I haven’t exactly done much today, but it was nice to take a little break. ๐Ÿ™‚ And hopefully I’ll be able to run and have fun while doing it tomorrow morning. Anyway, today I cleaned up the house a little bit, did a some yoga, played some more Story Of Seasons, and that was pretty much it haha.

img_4986

Anyways that’s all I’ve got for today, I suppose. Happy Thursday!

~Ashley

Thursday Things

The weather has been…well, I was going to say crazy, but I suppose it’s actually pretty typical for the Midwest haha. All week we’ve been alternating between sunny and storming. Seriously, one minute it will be absolutely beautiful outside but then the next it will be pouring down rain. But like I said, that’s pretty typical around here during this time of year.

What wasn’t exactly typical was the amount of hail that we got on Tuesday. It for realย poured down hail for 2-3 minutes. It wasn’t the biggest hail I’ve ever seen, but it was most definitely the largest quantity of hail I’ve ever witnessed falling from the sky.

img_3739

This was taken 10 or 15 minutes after the storm had stopped so a lot of it had already melted. But there was still quite a bit of it on the ground.

Luckily after the hail storm on Tuesday we’ve only had a bunch of rain and scattered storms. I don’t know if my garden could recover from another beating from hail like that. A lot of my plant’s have holes in the leaves and are looking a little beat up, but they are recovering which is good. ๐Ÿ™‚

After a short run yesterday, I spent quite a bit of time tending to my poor injured plants. I pulled off broken leaves and branches, pulled flowers off of my tomato plants and little tiny cucumbers from my cucumber plants (the plant’s aren’t big enough for me to want them to be producing anything yet). I also did a bit of tilling andย a bunchย of weeding.

img_3748

The joys of gardening. ๐Ÿ™‚

Our lawn mower can’t really fit into our garden plot so that means I’m doing a lot of grass pulling in and around my little garden plots, and along the fence that we share with our neighbor as well. Eventually I got tired of grass pulling, so I decided to kill like, three birds with one stone, and move the rabbit hutch into the garden. When Luke and I built the rabbit hutch, we made it without a bottom so that we could move it around the yard and the rabbits could eat as much grass as they wanted. So by moving it into the garden, the rabbits will get to eat as much grass as they want, their poop will fertilize the ground wherever they are (bunny poop makes GREAT fertilizer!), and the grass in the garden will get mowed down. So it’s a win win win situation. ๐Ÿ™‚ Well, it would be if I could keep them out there for more than a few hours at a time. All this rain has kinda put a damper on that situation, but eventually it’ll all work out.

img_3743

Finn’s not a fan of his rabbits being separated from him by a fence.

After all the work I put into the garden yesterday, I woke up super sore pretty much everywhere this morning. Especially in my upper back and triceps. That’s ok though, I could definitely use some more upper body strength anyway. ๐Ÿ˜‰ And even though I haven’t exactly been doing a lot of running lately, Thursday’s are usually my rest days, so that worked out quite nicely. ๐Ÿ™‚

So anyway, I spent my rest day dyeing my hair (something I’ve been procrastination for far too long), attempting to get rid of some of the mud that’s taken over my house, playing with the dogs, waiting for my package from Honey Stinger to get here, signed up for a nifty running challenge for the month of June that I saw on Instagram, and thought about my plans for running in general this summer.

img_3756

This is a 3+ hour process, so no it’s no wonder than I put it off until Iย absolutelyย have to do it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Whenever I’m in the process of dyeing my hair, it’s kinda hard for me to do any kind of workout because the dye would just get everywhere, so that was pretty much out of the question all afternoon. But I can usually do most of my usual chores without any issues. Soย I didn’t exactly get the house completely clean, but I’ve definitely made some progress at ridding the dirt and mud from the floor and that’s a step in the right direction.

I walked Finn this morning because he was being a little spaz but I didn’t get a chance to walk Lily or Finn since who wants to walk around their neighborhood with bleach in their hair? Plus I would imagine that dust, dirt, and other grossness would stick to it, and that would be no bueno. So we played a bunch of fetch instead and then they went absolutely banana’s when the Fedex guy bearing my package from Honey Stinger came by. Haha my dog absolutely hate Fedex, UPS, and our mail lady. I always feel bad because none of those people stop and wait for me to answer the door anymore. They just leave packages on the porch. I don’t blame them though. I mean, my dogs sound vicious when they think their territory or people are under any kind of threat.

Anyway, the Fedex guy got here around 4:45 pm and I was super excited to see him, well you know, briefly because they never hang around long because of the dogs. But anyway, I’ve been super stoked about the stuff I ordered from Honey stinger! ๐Ÿ™‚ I finally got my hands on a box of one of the new flavors of waffles and I can’t wait to try it! I love mint chocolate anything, so I’m sure it will be right up my alley. ๐Ÿ™‚ I actually thought about trying both new flavors, but I wasn’t feeling that adventurous, so I opted for my two usual favorite Honey Stinger waffle flavors; chocolate and ginger snap. I also got me a thing of honey, because I can always use more honey, and a draw string back pack. Mostly because I needed to go over $50 to get free shipping and I was already super close and it was pretty cheap, but I also figured it would come in handy for the trip to Florida that we are taking with Luke’s family in July (and eventually I’ll write a post talking about our Florida plans, but today is not that day ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). So yeah, I’m super duper excited about all of that! Now I’m all stocked up on fuel for the summer and the beginning of half marathon training, which starts later in July! Yay!

Processed with Rookie Cam

As far as my running goes, well, it hasn’t been all that great. Between being sick, traveling to Illinois, a week long anxiety attack thing (another post for another day), and a lack of motivation now that it’s getting pretty hot and humid out, I only ran a total of 30.59 miles for the month of May. That’s really sad. Especially since I’ve been trying (and miserably failing) to really up my weekly and monthly mileage.

So this morning on Instagram, someone had posted about one of these challengeville challenges. I thought they sounded like a lot of fun, so I looked through them all, decided that the TinMan would be perfect for me! Mostly because I’ve kinda been stuck at running 15-18 miles per week for what feels like forever, and this will obviously bump me up from that. Now I know that sounds like a big leap. Especially since I only covered 30.59 miles in May. But Iย knowย I’m fit enough to do it, I’ve been running pretty consistently for almost 4 years now. I’ve just become complacent and lazy and haven’t actually pushed myself to really preform at my best for a while now. I need some external motivation to actually make me want to put in the effort to get more miles in, and I think this will be the perfect challenge to get me there!

img_3755

As for the rest of the summer, I’m hoping I’ll build up enough momentum with the TinMan challenge this month to get me through most of July. The first week July will be a little tricky though. That’s when our trip to Florida is and it sounds like Luke’s mom has a pretty full itinerary for us while we’re there. So I guess I’m just going to try to run as much as I can, whenever I can, and hopefully that will be enough to keep the momentum going until I start my half marathon training plan that starts on July 23rd. I suppose that basically covers my running plans for this summer. Here’s hoping I’ll actually be able to keep up with this challenge and that I’ll start half marathon training feeling fit, happy, and injury free!

So speaking of half marathon training, I still haven’t signed up for the race I want to run this year haha. I’m planning on doing that very soon though. Hopefully I’ll beat the price increase, but at this point I’m not sure exactly when I’ll have the money to register. I’m also still not sure if my sister wants to run it with me or not. I sure hope she decides to. I think we’d both have lots of fun! Although if she does decide to run it with me, I’d like to do a few training runs with her so we can get a feel of what it would be like to run with each other. We’ve seriously never been on a run together! Actually accomplishing that may be a little tricky though, since now she lives 8 hours away from me in Colorado. But I suppose we’ve still got a little bit of time to work all of that out (if she even decides to run the race with me that is), this half marathon isn’t until November after all. ๐Ÿ™‚

So I’ve gotta say, I really enjoy writing these “Thursday Things” posts. It gives me a chance to go on and on about pretty much anything and everything that I’ve been up to or that’s on my mind and I think that’s a lot of fun! But that means that sometimes these posts end up being kinda long and I’m not sure how you guys feel about that. I mean, I enjoy reading blog posts that are short, sweet, and to the point, but I think I like longer, more detailed posts even better! I guess I’m just nosy like that. ๐Ÿ™‚

But for now that’s really all I’ve got to talk about for today.

Wishing you all the very best for your running goals, everyday adventures, and any of your other goals and challenges in life!

~Ashley

Thursday Things

It’s officially been a week since I got sick. I’m still not back to feeling 100% better yet, but I am getting there. I don’t feel super ill and gross and like I’m dying anymore so that’s great! I feel like I’m finally able to start getting back into my regular routine, which is even better!

So I keep saying it, but I’ve yet to do it because I have been sick and trying to get more rest, but I really need to start getting up earlier so that I can start my runs before it get too hot and humid. I’m thinking that next week I’m going to start getting up at 5:45 am with Luke (that’s when he gets up for work). That should be good for now, since it’s not tooย hot out yet, but before too long I’m going to have to get up around 5 in the morning and I’m most definitely not looking forward to that.

Haha anyway I got up at 7:30 this morning. That’s about half an hour later than usual, but like I said, since I’m still kinda sick I’m trying to get a little more rest. Plus I knew it was supposed to be a little cooler out today (the high is 68 degrees and it felt like 62 when I ran) and cloudy so it wasn’t too bad I suppose.

I feel like the fact that I even ran today was impressive though! I’ve been kinda tired and cranky lately, probably because I’ve been sick and haven’t been able to do much running. So when I got up I almost though about not running today. But after a cup of coffee I felt a little bit better and got my ass out on the road and did the 3 miles that I told myself that I was going to do today.

img_3402

They were 3 super duper slow miles, and I think the last half mile-ish was mostly walking, but I’m very glad to have gotten them done. Don’t get me wrong, this run was a total suck fest and I wanted to quit the entire time. But once I was done I felt quite a bit better both physically and mentally, and that’s pretty great! ๐Ÿ™‚

But anyway, other than the fact that I was actually able to run this morning, today has been otherwise uneventful. Tomorrow should be a lot of fun though! If it doesn’t rain Luke and I are going to do a bunch of tilling and planting and weeding in the garden and that’s always fun! We’ve also got our usual every-other-Friday routine of grocery shopping, errand running, and probably dog park walking today, so tomorrow’s going to be very busy!

Happy Friday eve!

~Ashley

Thursday Things

Finn slept all night last night! Yay! I also slept a little bit better so that’s nice. ๐Ÿ™‚ I got up at 7 am, ate breakfast, had a cup of coffee, and geared up for my run. I was super pumped and ready to go! Unfortunately my upbeat attitude and dreams of a super fun run came crashing down the second my Garmin caught a GPS signal and started running. My legs felt like lead, my hips were on fire, my quads were crazy tight, and I was hot but not really sweating much because I hardly drank any water yesterday because I’m dumb. Good times.

I thought about toughing it out, hell I almost did. But at 1.3 miles I started getting kinda dizzy, so I decided to stop at a 1.5 miles, go home, drink a bunch of water, stretch, foam roll, and eat some damn vegetables.

Processed with Rookie Cam

But first I had to shower because I was kinda sweaty and gross. After I did that I did start working on the hydration thing though. While I was working on that, I went outside to take care of the rabbits and play with the dogs a little bit. But when I went to the rabbit hutch I realized that Rey wasn’t inside anymore. Upon further inspection I found that she had dug her way out. Great. I started frantically searching the yard, hoping that she was still somewhere near by. That’s when I saw her run out from under the shed, see me, then run right back under it again.

I found her, then tried coaxing her out with orange slices and dandelions, but she had probably been out all morning gorging herself on all of the grass and weeds in the backyard, so she wasn’t budging.

So, see that cinder block that she’s behind? Yeah I had to dig it out of the ground and then pull it out from under the shed. That wasn’t an easy task, but I got it out of the way and Rey was still just sitting in front of the hole I made, but now with her back to me. So I slowly reached under the shed, carefully positioned my hands over her, and snatched her out of the hole! SUCCESS!! She is now safe and sound in a dog crate in my kitchen, until I figure out what to do with her now. I’m just glad I had found her and got her back safely before something else found her.

After the bunny was safe again, I ate some lunch, had another bottle of water, and then took Lily for a walk. For the most part it wasn’t a very eventful walk, but we did find a cat that looks a lot like our Winchester. This guys just a little bit lighter in color than Winchester is. I just thought that was neat haha.

After our walk I finally quite procrastinating and got my stretch on. I did a 30 minute yoga video specifically for runners. That was really nice and I felt pretty darn great afterwards. And then I rolled my hamstrings and hips a little bit. I probably should have done my quads too, but I kinda wanted to wait for Luke to get home so he could do it with my roller wand thingy. He can get them so much better and deeper than I can! I feel like its a leverage thing or something.

Anyway, after my little yoga session I may or may not have took a short little nap on the couch with Finn and Lily. I guess we were all tired from the bunny fiasco. That was a kinda stressful situation haha. Anyway after our little nap, I chugged another bottle of water, put on a pair of compression sockes (my heals were hurting a little bit, so I figured that’d be a good idea), turned on the latest episode of the Runner’s World Show and got to cleaning the house. ๐Ÿ™‚

Around 5 pm Luke got home and announced that we were going out to eat after he got done showering, and that I needed to change out of the running tank top I was wearing. Haha I mean, I do spend about 85% of my time in active wear, but I’m also running really low on tank tops and “nice” shirts. I guess I need to go shopping… Anyway we ended up getting Chinese food and it was pretty good!

After my failed attempt at running this morning I thought that maybe I’d give it another shot this evening, but now it’s 8 pm and getting a little too dark for that. I guess I can stationary bike or foam roll some more or something.

I hope you had a happy Thursday!

Thursday Things

Welp, we’re five days in with Finn and he’s already coming along nicely! He’s hardcore attached to Luke and I, which can easily become a problem since border collies are prone to separation anxiety. But these past few days I’ve been making him go outside with the big dogs by himself in hopes that that will help him gain some independence. He also sleeps in the crate at night so that should help as well.

Other than that though, he’s doing great! He knows his name and how to come when he’s called (although he gets very distracted very easily, but that’s to be expected). He has just about mastered “sit” and we’re working on “down”. He also knows what “go outside”, “treat”, and “are you hungry” means. He’s been able to sleep through most nights without having an accident or waking me up in the middle of the night, and he’s only had a few accidents in the house. He’s such a smart baby! ๐Ÿ™‚

Mine and Dean’s relationship has been a little rocky since Finn’s been here. I guess he’s upset because he’s my special buddy, but I’ve been having to spend a lot of time with Finn. At first he wouldn’t come when I called, wouldn’t look at me, didn’t want to be near me, and wouldn’t even take treats from me. I’ve never gotten the cold shoulder from a dog before haha. He’s also been acting out a little bit. Not much though, haha he’s never really had a defiant streak so all he’s been doing is causing problems at food time. Taking forever to eat and stopping just to come in the living room (they get fed in the kitchen) to growl at Odin.

I’ve been trying to give him some extra attention, and yesterday he actually started letting me pet him, love on him, and listening to me again. Since he actually wants to be my friend again I finished up my run today with him. I didn’t do the whole run with him. I had an interval workout on the scheduled today and I like doing those alone, but I did do my cool down with him and he seemed very happy about that.

I sure was happy with how this run went! It was super tough, but I ended up being about 30-40 seconds off of my current 5k PR which is not bad considering I was having asthma issues earlier this week. That seems to be clearing up though, so yay for that!

img_2484

Actually, I think this run was super tough because of the whole asthma thing and because my eating has been absolutely atrocious since Monday and that tends to make running a little more difficult. I’ve managed to reign that in today though so that’s good. ๐Ÿ™‚ The warmer weather also makes things a little more difficult for me, but I do think I’m starting to adjust. I really need to start getting up earlier so I can get out on the road before the sun has a chance to heat up the pavement. Luckily that hasn’t been a problem yet, but it definitely will be during the summer months. I just really don’t like getting up before 7 am hahaha.

So my eating has been pretty atrocious since Monday. I’m thinking that’s probably also why today’s run was kind of difficult. That tends to happen when I eat like shit. I’ve started to reign it in a little bit today though, and I’ve got all of my meals planned out for tomorrow, so that should help a lot. This whole eating better so I don’t look like shit in Florida is super hard. Which is really frustrating because at one point I was really good at eating clean. I felt and looked great! But now that I’ve slipped out of those habits it’s super hard and I feel tired and gross most of the time. I just keep reminding myself that a few not so great days of eating doesn’t have to turn into a week, then a month, then a year, etc. of bad eating habits. This is going to be a slow process and that’s ok. ๐Ÿ™‚

So I hope your week so far has been great! Mine has definitely been a lot of fun!

Happy Thursday!
