Thursday Things

It’s officially been a week since I got sick. I’m still not back to feeling 100% better yet, but I am getting there. I don’t feel super ill and gross and like I’m dying anymore so that’s great! I feel like I’m finally able to start getting back into my regular routine, which is even better!

So I keep saying it, but I’ve yet to do it because I have been sick and trying to get more rest, but I really need to start getting up earlier so that I can start my runs before it get too hot and humid. I’m thinking that next week I’m going to start getting up at 5:45 am with Luke (that’s when he gets up for work). That should be good for now, since it’s not tooΒ hot out yet, but before too long I’m going to have to get up around 5 in the morning and I’m most definitely not looking forward to that.

Haha anyway I got up at 7:30 this morning. That’s about half an hour later than usual, but like I said, since I’m still kinda sick I’m trying to get a little more rest. Plus I knew it was supposed to be a little cooler out today (the high is 68 degrees and it felt like 62 when I ran) and cloudy so it wasn’t too bad I suppose.

I feel like the fact that I even ran today was impressive though! I’ve been kinda tired and cranky lately, probably because I’ve been sick and haven’t been able to do much running. So when I got up I almost though about not running today. But after a cup of coffee I felt a little bit better and got my ass out on the road and did the 3 miles that I told myself that I was going to do today.

They were 3 super duper slow miles, and I think the last half mile-ish was mostly walking, but I’m very glad to have gotten them done. Don’t get me wrong, this run was a total suck fest and I wanted to quit the entire time. But once I was done I felt quite a bit better both physically and mentally, and that’s pretty great! πŸ™‚

But anyway, other than the fact that I was actually able to run this morning, today has been otherwise uneventful. Tomorrow should be a lot of fun though! If it doesn’t rain Luke and I are going to do a bunch of tilling and planting and weeding in the garden and that’s always fun! We’ve also got our usual every-other-Friday routine of grocery shopping, errand running, and probably dog park walking today, so tomorrow’s going to be very busy!

Thursday Things

Finn slept all night last night! Yay! I also slept a little bit better so that’s nice. πŸ™‚ I got up at 7 am, ate breakfast, had a cup of coffee, and geared up for my run. I was super pumped and ready to go! Unfortunately my upbeat attitude and dreams of a super fun run came crashing down the second my Garmin caught a GPS signal and started running. My legs felt like lead, my hips were on fire, my quads were crazy tight, and I was hot but not really sweating much because I hardly drank any water yesterday because I’m dumb. Good times.

I thought about toughing it out, hell I almost did. But at 1.3 miles I started getting kinda dizzy, so I decided to stop at a 1.5 miles, go home, drink a bunch of water, stretch, foam roll, and eat some damn vegetables.

But first I had to shower because I was kinda sweaty and gross. After I did that I did start working on the hydration thing though. While I was working on that, I went outside to take care of the rabbits and play with the dogs a little bit. But when I went to the rabbit hutch I realized that Rey wasn’t inside anymore. Upon further inspection I found that she had dug her way out. Great. I started frantically searching the yard, hoping that she was still somewhere near by. That’s when I saw her run out from under the shed, see me, then run right back under it again.

I found her, then tried coaxing her out with orange slices and dandelions, but she had probably been out all morning gorging herself on all of the grass and weeds in the backyard, so she wasn’t budging.

So, see that cinder block that she’s behind? Yeah I had to dig it out of the ground and then pull it out from under the shed. That wasn’t an easy task, but I got it out of the way and Rey was still just sitting in front of the hole I made, but now with her back to me. So I slowly reached under the shed, carefully positioned my hands over her, and snatched her out of the hole! SUCCESS!! She is now safe and sound in a dog crate in my kitchen, until I figure out what to do with her now. I’m just glad I had found her and got her back safely before something else found her.

After the bunny was safe again, I ate some lunch, had another bottle of water, and then took Lily for a walk. For the most part it wasn’t a very eventful walk, but we did find a cat that looks a lot like our Winchester. This guys just a little bit lighter in color than Winchester is. I just thought that was neat haha.

After our walk I finally quite procrastinating and got my stretch on. I did a 30 minute yoga video specifically for runners. That was really nice and I felt pretty darn great afterwards. And then I rolled my hamstrings and hips a little bit. I probably should have done my quads too, but I kinda wanted to wait for Luke to get home so he could do it with my roller wand thingy. He can get them so much better and deeper than I can! I feel like its a leverage thing or something.

Anyway, after my little yoga session I may or may not have took a short little nap on the couch with Finn and Lily. I guess we were all tired from the bunny fiasco. That was a kinda stressful situation haha. Anyway after our little nap, I chugged another bottle of water, put on a pair of compression sockes (my heals were hurting a little bit, so I figured that’d be a good idea), turned on the latest episode of the Runner’s World Show and got to cleaning the house. πŸ™‚

Around 5 pm Luke got home and announced that we were going out to eat after he got done showering, and that I needed to change out of the running tank top I was wearing. Haha I mean, I do spend about 85% of my time in active wear, but I’m also running really low on tank tops and “nice” shirts. I guess I need to go shopping… Anyway we ended up getting Chinese food and it was pretty good! 

After my failed attempt at running this morning I thought that maybe I’d give it another shot this evening, but now it’s 8 pm and getting a little too dark for that. I guess I can stationary bike or foam roll some more or something.

Thursday Things

Welp, we’re five days in with Finn and he’s already coming along nicely! He’s hardcore attached to Luke and I, which can easily become a problem since border collies are prone to separation anxiety. But these past few days I’ve been making him go outside with the big dogs by himself in hopes that that will help him gain some independence. He also sleeps in the crate at night so that should help as well.

Other than that though, he’s doing great! He knows his name and how to come when he’s called (although he gets very distracted very easily, but that’s to be expected). He has just about mastered “sit” and we’re working on “down”. He also knows what “go outside”, “treat”, and “are you hungry” means. He’s been able to sleep through most nights without having an accident or waking me up in the middle of the night, and he’s only had a few accidents in the house. He’s such a smart baby! πŸ™‚

Mine and Dean’s relationship has been a little rocky since Finn’s been here. I guess he’s upset because he’s my special buddy, but I’ve been having to spend a lot of time with Finn. At first he wouldn’t come when I called, wouldn’t look at me, didn’t want to be near me, and wouldn’t even take treats from me. I’ve never gotten the cold shoulder from a dog before haha. He’s also been acting out a little bit. Not much though, haha he’s never really had a defiant streak so all he’s been doing is causing problems at food time. Taking forever to eat and stopping just to come in the living room (they get fed in the kitchen) to growl at Odin.

I’ve been trying to give him some extra attention, and yesterday he actually started letting me pet him, love on him, and listening to me again. Since he actually wants to be my friend again I finished up my run today with him. I didn’t do the whole run with him. I had an interval workout on the scheduled today and I like doing those alone, but I did do my cool down with him and he seemed very happy about that.

I sure was happy with how this run went! It was super tough, but I ended up being about 30-40 seconds off of my current 5k PR which is not bad considering I was having asthma issues earlier this week. That seems to be clearing up though, so yay for that!

Actually, I think this run was super tough because of the whole asthma thing and because my eating has been absolutely atrocious since Monday and that tends to make running a little more difficult. I’ve managed to reign that in today though so that’s good. πŸ™‚ The warmer weather also makes things a little more difficult for me, but I do think I’m starting to adjust. I really need to start getting up earlier so I can get out on the road before the sun has a chance to heat up the pavement. Luckily that hasn’t been a problem yet, but it definitely will be during the summer months. I just really don’t like getting up before 7 am hahaha.

So my eating has been pretty atrocious since Monday. I’m thinking that’s probably also why today’s run was kind of difficult. That tends to happen when I eat like shit. I’ve started to reign it in a little bit today though, and I’ve got all of my meals planned out for tomorrow, so that should help a lot. This whole eating better so I don’t look like shit in Florida is super hard. Which is really frustrating because at one point I was really good at eating clean. I felt and looked great! But now that I’ve slipped out of those habits it’s super hard and I feel tired and gross most of the time. I just keep reminding myself that a few not so great days of eating doesn’t have to turn into a week, then a month, then a year, etc. of bad eating habits. This is going to be a slow process and that’s ok. πŸ™‚

So I hope your week so far has been great! Mine has definitely been a lot of fun!

Thursday Things

Guys! Have you seen the new Honey Stinger waffle flavors yet?!? I had heard they were coming out with new flavors for this spring, but I hadn’t heard what they were until a few days ago; chocolate mint, and vanilla and chocolate!! I’m for real super duper excited about these things! Chocolate mint is pretty much my favorite flavor of anything ever, and rumor has it that the vanilla and chocolate waffles taste like s’mores. How neat is that?!

I’m not sure when they’ll be available though. TheirΒ blog is a little bit vague about that; stating that they will be available for sale this spring at select stores, and on their website, along with Amazon.com. But whenever they become available to purchase, I’m definitely going to be trying them!

So, is daylight savings still messing with anyone else? Because I’m still adjusting to springing forward an hour. Ever since we did I’ve had trouble waking up, and this morning I woke up an hour later than I usually would have. Except not really, because technically it was the exact time I would have woken up before the time change. I’m sure I’ll adjust in a few more days, it’s just not a fun process haha.

Since I woke up an hour later than I wanted to, I ran an hour later than I would have liked. It’s not like I had anything to be late for or even really planned for today, but I do like to stay somewhat on a scheduled, and I actually want to start running earlier in an effort to get used to getting out there earlier. Because before I know it I’ll be getting up and out the door before the sun comes up. I’m definitely not looking forward to that, but it’s totally necessary in the summer…Anyway, my run today was just an easy 30 minutes. Initially IΒ reallyΒ didn’t want to do it (probably because of the daylight savings thing), but I ended up feeling really good and had fun, so I’m glad I did. πŸ™‚

I started out my run with a light jacket on, but near the end I had to take if off and finished the last 10 minutes or so in just a tank top. I guess the few cold days we’ve had and the light snow that happened on Tuesday was just winter’s last little hurrah. Here in Kansas, the highs for the rest of the week are supposed to be in the low to mid 60’s, and the high on Sunday is supposed to be 80 degrees. So I guess that means Luke and I should be good to get our garden started this weekend. I suppose at the very least we can get everything tilled and then I can start planting whenever I see fit. I don’t really need Luke’s help with that, but I when it comes to tilling I sure do! Haha I don’t like using our tiller because it vibrates really bad and that makes my arms go numb, so I just make Luke do it. But in all fairness, I end up doing most of the weeding, watering, pest control, and what not, so it all works out quite nicely. πŸ™‚

Speaking of warmer weather; I saw this little gem on…Facebook? Instagram? I don’t remember exactly (although I did re-post in on Instagram πŸ˜‰ ), but I thought it was something most runners can relate to! I’ve already got pretty awesome sports bra, shoe, and watch tan lines going on, and it’s only the middle of March! They’re going to end up being sooo much worse by the end of the summer! Especially since I’m going to be spending a week or so in Florida in July. Ah the joys of being a runner.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m actually kinda proud of my tan lines. They just prove I’ve put in a lot of work Β over the summer. πŸ™‚

Along with my awesome tan lines, I’m also sporting a super spiffy bruise on my leg. I obtained said bruise by walking into a table at some point over the weekend (I wanna say Sunday morning, but I don’t remember for sure). You read that right. I walked into a table, and bruised my leg. Pretty badly too! It was even swollen for a few days after leg met table. Luckily my klutzy-ness didn’t cause me to miss out on any running, because it totally has before! Once I was doing handstands back when I lived in an apartment, and smacked my foot on the low part of the ceiling that separated the living room from the kitchen. My foot swelled up enough that I couldn’t walk properly for a few days, let alone run. So at least I didn’t have some kind of weird repeat of that.

Oh! And another time, when I was in second grade, I wasn’t paying attention to what I was doing and stepped barefoot onto a pitchfork. It went all the way through my toe. ALL THE WAY THROUGH!! Yeah that was the day I learned to always wear shoes in barns and to watch were I step. I still have the scar to prove it too!

Obviously it’s really old so it’s pretty faded, but you can still kinda see it there next to my thumb. Also, just ignore that cat hair. I am literally always covered in dog/cat hair…

I could name about 8 million other dumb ways that I’ve ended up getting hurt. Honestly it’s pretty impressive that I’ve managed to make it through 25 years of life without dying (although I have had my brushes with death. The first when I was born and the second when my appendix ruptured, but those are really long stories for another day). Haha it’s instances like the ones I’ve just mentioned that are the reason that Luke wouldn’t let me get up on the roof and take down our Christmas lights in January. I probably really would have fallen off or something. I am aΒ terribleΒ klutz.

On an unrelated note (but seriously, when is anything I ever talk about in a “Thursday Things” post related anyway?), you guys, IΒ NEED book recommendations!!! I’m desperately tying to drag myself out of the safe little Stephen King and running related book hole that I currently reside it, but it’s not going well. Last Friday Luke and I went to Barne’s and Noble, spent over an hour there, and I eventually settled on one book which I’m super disappointed with. It sounded really cool, but I’m really having trouble getting into the story. Plus some of the things that are going on just seem super unbelievable to me. And I mean, Stephen King made me feel like a weird clown/alien thing really did reside in the sewers under Derry, Maine. So I kind feel like I’m not the problem here…

Haha Luke told me that my problem is that I got introduced to a really good author at a young age (I started reading Stephen King novels in 7th grade), have been very dedicated to that author, and now nothing else is going to live up to my expectations. I am very determined to prove him wrong though! So seriously, whats your favorite book? Or what are you currently reading? I wanna know!!

Alrighty then! I feel like I’ve rambled on enough for today, so I’m going to stop before I get even more out of control. πŸ˜‰

10 Miles and Thursday Things

Decided to switch things up a little bit, and do my long run today instead of doing it during the weekend like I usually do.

I don’t know what it is about long run day, but every morning that I plan on running long, I can never seem to eat very much. I could eat anything and everything before a shorter run or even speed work, but my stomach never wants to cooperate when it knows we’re running long…This morning I managed to force down a container of yogurt with a tbs on chia seeds mixed in (great combo, by the way!) and a cup of coffee, which is actually more than I usually eat.

Anyway, about 40 minutes after I ate; around 8:20 am, I made my way out the door and set out to run 10 miles. What I didn’t take into account was the weather. I definitely should have gotten up and out the door much earlier. It was almost 60 degrees and sunny when I set out, and about 65 when I finished. That was absolutely no fun. I already dislike warm weather, and the transition from cold weather running to warm weather running is always super tough for me.

I got it done though! Parts of it were slightly miserable. It ended up taking me about 2 hours and 22  minutes to do it, and at one point I ended up sitting on my porch for a few minutes while eating a banana and feeling sorry for myself. But I still covered 10 miles on my own two feet. πŸ™‚ This is actually the longest run I’ve done since the Longview Half back in November. I’ve set out to do 10 milers a few times since then, but the longest I’ve managed was 8, until today. I think because I fueled pretty well today.

All of the trees in my neighborhood are starting to bloom! πŸ™‚

The yogurt and coffee I had for breakfast actually sat really well in my stomach. I was a little worried about that, since dairy and warm weather don’t tend to mix well for me, so that was a pleasant surprise! I stopped at my house around every two miles for a quick drink of water. That’s the nice part about running long around my neighborhood, I don’t have to carry water or food with me which is really nice. It almost makes up for the fact that it can get boring running up and down the same streets over and over again. Anyway, around mile 4 I ate half a pack of Honey Stinger energy chews, finished the pack at around 6.5 miles, then had my little pity party and banana at around mile 8. That seemed to work really well for me! I kinda wish I had a gatorade though. I sweat super salty so I always feel 8 million times better when I drink sports drinks while on the run. Oh well, I’ll just have to remember to stock up on some next time I go to the store.

Anyway, after my run I sat with my legs up on the wall for 5 minutes, showered, ate lunch, and then a whole lot of nothing for a while. I’m feeling kinda drained from those 10 miles. Surprisingly enough though, my legs actually feel pretty darn good! My butt and hamstrings are kinda sore from running up hills, but for once my quads aren’t sore at all! They don’t even feel tight, which is pretty much a miracle n and of itself, because my quads are always tight. It’s really nice though! My legs have never felt so good after a long run before!

While I was eating lunch a thunderstorm kinda popped up out of nowhere. I had checked the weather several times throughout the day, and we weren’t supposed to get any rain at all. Luckily I saw a flash of lighting before it actually hit, so I had enough time to run outside and brought the rabbits before it started pouring. At first I was kinda wishing that this little storm would have popped up earlier while I was running. I very much enjoy running in the rain. But then it started hailing. Luckily the hail stopped after a few minutes, but that definitely wouldn’t have been pleasant to run in! So I guess I’m glad I ran when I did.

Around 3 pm I finally got my shit together and decided it would be a good idea to move around and stretch a little bit. So I ate a bowl of honey bunches of oats, did 30 minutes of yin yoga (I’ve been really enjoying yin yoga, but I couldn’t make it through the whole video I was doing today), picked up my running gear which was still scattered around the house, then started making dinner; pasta with veggies (zucchini for me, broccoli for  Luke), chicken, and garlic/tomato/basil s sauce. Yum! 

Once Luke got home we ate, and then I abandoned any pretenses of actually getting anything else done today haha. He’s playing video games, I’m reading a book, and that’s probably what we’ll be doing for the rest of the night.

Thursday Things

Alrighty then, I’m going to start off this post by getting really real; PMS is kicking my ass this week. The week before my period is literally the worst thing to happen to my running. I’m don’t seep well so I’m always tired, I’m usually kinda nauseous in the morning, my legs don’t want to seem to move, and I’m just in a surly mood. Gross…

At least I got 3 hours of deep sleep last night. That’s a slight improvement.

So yeah, my running has hardcore suffered. I skipped my run on Monday because I was too tired to even consider it, Tuesday I should have hit 3 miles but I skipped the cool down after my interval workout so I didn’t quite make that, and yesterday I had every intention of doing 4 easy miles but after 2 I was just like “fuck it”. Jeez I’m such an awesome athlete; skipping workouts, cutting them short, missing strength workouts. I’m obviously doing everything I can to improve. Did I mention that I’m in a surly mood?

Tuesday and Wednesday’s workouts

I guess to put a positive spin on this so far Β super whiny post; at least peak week is done. And it went really well too! I didn’t skip any workout or mileage, and I felt pretty good throughout the whole week. So I mean, one bad week doesn’t define my whole half marathon training experience. Although right now it feels like it, but at least can look back at weeks like last week and remind myself that I do like running, I am ready for this half marathon, and that things will go back to feeling better soon. Training has its ups and downs and that’s totally normal and ok. πŸ˜„πŸ’œ

Speaking of half marathon related stuff (great segue way, well aware πŸ˜‰ ), I’m almost down the two week mark! In 16 days I’ll be back at Longview Lake and kicking ass! Well, hopefully. Either way, I’ll be there and I’ll be giving it my all.

At this point last year I was like, hardcore freaking out, but now at this point I’m pretty excited. I think that 12 mile long run last week definitely helped build up my confidence. Last year the longest I went before was 10 miles. Not exactly a great confidence builder.Plus the fact that I’ve already covered the distance once is probably helping with the whole confidence thing. Either way, I’m excited to run this race for the second time!

As race day gets closer I’ve been thinking more and more about what I want to do and accomplish after this half. I already talked a little bit about this here, but I definitely want to improve my strength and speed. So I’ve decided I need to do hills and lots of them. Haha that’s as far as I’ve gotten, but I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, ya know?

I feel like that pretty much covers everything running-wise. A this point running is the most exciting thing going on in my life, but I’m ok with that.Too much excitement before a big race isn’t necessarily a good thing.

My sister is still still talking to me about running. She’s recovery really well from her surgery and is slowly building up mileage. Yesterday she ran/walked a little over 5k, which is awesome and I’m so super excited for her! Hopefully sometime soon we’ll be able to run together, and I’m sure by the time that happens she’ll kick my ass because she’s speedy and I’m not. But to my credit, I can go farther than she ever has, so I mean, at least I’ve got that going for me. πŸ˜‰

I don’t know what’s going on with the weather, but I’m super duper unhappy about it. It’s the end of October for pete’s sake! It should be cold!! 😦 😦 😦 It definitely doesn’t help knowing that it’s snowing in other parts of the country, but we’re back in the high 70’s here in the Midwest. Sad face…

Last night Green Day played in STL at a super awesome/super small venue. Not gonna lie, not being able to be there kinda hurt, but I’ve decided a long time ago that I’m never going to be lucky enough to see them play at a small venue. A few weeks ago the announced their stadium tour dates for early 2017 and none of them are anywhere near Kansas City or St. Louis so that’s a huge bummer. If they completely skip over the Midwest like they did for the Trilogy tour (although that one was cut short for other reasons) I’m going to be super pissed. Can you tell I’m a little bit bitter? *sigh* It looks like they had lots of fun last night too…

 

I suppose that’s all I’ve got for today, plus I desperately need to dye my hair. I have a bad habit of letting it get really bad before I fix it, but it’s such a long and boring process! So I’ll leave you with the very last song from Revolution Radio. That’s right, I’m finally done haha! Seriously though, Ordinary World is a fantastic song and a great way to end an awesome album. πŸ™‚
