Weekly Recap: May 28th-June 3rd, 2018

Monday:

On Monday Luke and I had a little Memorial Day party. Him, my brother-in-law, and one of my neighbor’s all smoked ribs and made it into a competition to see who’s were the best. Although I don’t think they ever came to a conclusion haha. But we spent the whole day outside hanging out and playing with the dogs and all of the small children that were running back and forth between our two yards. It was a fun day!

Tuesday:

  • Rest Day

Tuesday was not a fun day… First, my other neighbor’s dog killed my chickens, then I had to go to the dentist. Yuck. But I got temporary crowns put on both teeth that have had root canals and in about another week or so I should get the permanent ones put on. So at least those teeth have been taken care of.

Wednesday:

  • 2 miles

I always know its a weird week when my first run doesn’t happen until Wednesday. Haha but life happens and sometimes running kinda falls to the wayside. And that’s ok every once in a while! Anyway, did 2 hot and muggy miles on Wednesday. My gums got really irritated during the whole crown process thing the day before and I was told that they might take a while to calm down again. So my whole mouth was kinda achy and throbbed with every step I took, So 2 miles was all I had in me. But that was a whole lot better than nothing!!

Thursday:

  • 3 miles
  • a few minutes of Pilates

I was actually feeling really good on Thursday! I slept in a little bit (mostly because I figured a little extra sleep might help my tooth situation heal a little faster 😉 ) and thought that getting out later to run was going to suck. Once the sun comes out and heats up the asphalt things can get slightly miserable haha. But surprisingly enough it wasn’t too bad and I had a lot of fun! Followed my run with some weeding in the garden and a short blogilates video. 🙂

Friday:

  • rest day

Feeling kinda tired on Friday. Probably from all of the craziness earlier this week. So, rest day. But 4 of our new chicks made in on Friday! Luke had ordered new ones from a hatchery online the day Ozzy killed our other ones. We were supposed to get 8 but 4 of them didn’t make it. But the rest should be here by next Wednesday. I’m still super duper pissed that we were soooo freaking close to getting eggs and now we’re all the way back to square one, but oh my gosh little 2 day old chicks are just too adorable!!

Saturday:

  • 4.36 miles
  • 20 minutes of yoga

I wanted to do 10, so obviously that didn’t go as planned…

I was so ready to do a long run on Saturday! I had everything prepped any laid out the night before, woke up at 5 am to try to beat the heat, ate, had my coffee, and then had to spend an extra hour and a half waiting out a thunderstorm… Don’t get me wrong, I love thunderstorms and have a really bad habit of running during them haha. But this one looked pretty bad, so I waited it out. And I’m glad I did. There were a bunch of downed tree limbs on the roads and I saw once house that had its shutters ripped off and another that had a window screen get broken by the storm. So obviously waiting was a good idea, but that meant I ate two and a half hours before my run instead of my usual one. That kinda had me feeling off. I shouldn’t have gone out feeling kinda hungry (that never ends well for me) but I did… And for some reason my gums were starting to hurt again during this run. I mean, they’ve been kinda achy ever since I got the crowns put on, like the dentist said they would, but it was just bothering me more on Saturday. Haha I usually do better when dealing with pain and discomfort, but mouth pain is the worst!!

So I ended up stopping waaay short of my goal, but I’m just gonna chalk it up to this whole week being weird and hectic and off, and hope that next week is better!

Sunday:

  • 30 minutes of yoga

Not gonna lie, I was kinda super stoked that I didn’t have to run today haha. I mean, I guess I could have, but typically Sunday’s are my rest days and I like to keep it that way. Did a little bit of easy yoga though. That felt pretty good. 🙂

Total Weekly Mileage: 9.37

Meh, it was a weird week. I’m glad I did amount of running at all haha. 😉

Anyway happy Sunday, everyone! Here’s to a new week and a fresh start at things. 🙂

Running In A Severe Thunderstorm Is A Great Way To Add A Little Danger To Your Running Routine

First, let me preface this post by saying I don’t recommend running during severe weather. Along with the obvious risk of getting struck by lightning, there’s also a chance of getting hailed on, getting hit with tree branches or other debris, and if is raining hard enough it may be difficult for drivers to see you, which can get very dangerous.

Also, I didn’t go out and run during this “dangerous” thunderstorm (as the weatherbug app called it) on purpose. That just kinda happened because I decided that checking the weather once was probably good enough. It was not haha.

So let me explain what went down this morning…

I woke up and got out of bed at 5 am, as I’ve been doing for the last week and a half ish. I made coffee, ate breakfast, then got dressed and checked the weather bug app while I drake my coffee and sipped on some water.

According to weatherbug, we were under a dangerous thunderstorm alert until 6 am, so I checked the radar, and saw that yes there was a chance that we were going to get hit with a pretty bad storm, but the dark orange section of this storm on the radar map was relatively small and it looked like it might not hit us at all. I decided that I was probably going to get rained on and experience a little bit of thunder and lightning since it looked like the yellow section of the storm on the radar map was coming right at us, but I figured that since the dangerous thunderstorm alert ended at 6 I should be ok. After that I didn’t bother to check the weather again and that ended up being a huge mistake.

I set out on to do my 4 miler at 5:30 am. Still assuming that the dangerous thunderstorm alert ended in half an hour and that I’d probably be ok to run. Plus even though I know it’s probably not the best idea, I do like running in thunderstorms as long as they aren’t too bad, so I was actually kind of excited!

Initially I was seeing a lot of lightning, but I didn’t really think much of it. A lot of thunderstorms here in the Midwest produce a lot of lightning, even if the storm really isn’t all that bad. Plus it hadn’t even started raining or really thundering yet so I thought I was going to be able to finish my 4 miler without any problems.

I was a little over half a mile in when it started to sprinkle a little bit, but I like running in the rain, so I wasn’t worried about it at all. When I was about a mile in, the wind started to pick up and the temperature started to drop very quickly. I think it ended up dropping close to 10 degrees actually. That’s when I started to get a little bit worried. A minute or two after I started to worry about this storm, there was a huge flash of lighting and a loud boom of thunder.

That’s when I knew that things were going to get really bad and that I should probably start heading home. So I ran passed the street I was originally going to turn on and turned onto my street instead. At that point it was absolutely pouring down rain, the wind was getting crazy bad, tree branches were falling down, I got hit with a few stray leaves and sticks (luckily it was nothing too big. That probably would have ended badly), and there was a lot of really big lightning bolts and very loud thunder. And I was still almost a mile away from home.

I kept on trucking though and I made it home without indecent! I ended up stopping at 1.78 miles, which was super unsatisfying, but there was no way I was going to try to get in that last almost .2 miles done during that storm.

I actually made it home right before Luke left for work, so I got to talk to him for a little bit. And don’t worry, he did in fact tell me that I was crazy and that I probably should have waited to run haha. After he left I did a little bit of yoga to try to loosen up my calves (they were feeling quite tight today) and then I sat in my wet running gear for probably around 30 minutes while I waited for the storm worst of the storm to pass.

So once the really bad part of the storm was over (and this time I made sure to check the weather several  times before I went back out 😉 ) I set out to finish my run. It was still raining and there was a little bit of thunder and lighting, but it wasn’t too bad. So I was excited about that! Those are the kind of thunderstorms I like to run it haha. But unfortunately after sitting around for a while I just wasn’t feeling the whole running thing anymore. I was cold and my legs were feeling really tight (probably from sitting around in wet clothes) and I just wasn’t having fun anymore. So I did another 2 miles, decided that that got me close enough to 4 miles for the day, and then called it quits.

While finishing up those 2 miles, I ran past the street that I had almost run down earlier and I am very glad that I ended up turning onto my street instead. There are so many downed tree limbs in one part of that street, that they’re almost completely blocking part of the road. It’s a very good thing I didn’t decided to take that way home, because that probably wouldn’t have ended well for me…

I mean, there are downed tree limbs everywhere now, but it looked like that street was the worst. Luckily the worst damage to storm did to us was knock a decent sized branch onto the garden fence. It didn’t even hit any of the plants! So we got off pretty easy. My next door neighbor has a huge tree limb on his roof now. I sure hope it didn’t damage his roof. It doesn’t look too bad, but I guess it’s kinda hard to tell.

Anyway, it’s almost 10 am as I type this, and the sun is shining, the birds are chirpping, and it’s looking like it’s going to be another beautiful, albeit hot and humid, day. Eventually I’m going to have to go out and enjoy it (and probably complain about how hot it is haha), but for now I’m thinking I need to take a little nap. My little storm chasing adventure kinda wore me out! 😉

Happy Hump Day!

Meat Loaf, Running, and Thunderstorms

WHY HAVE I HAD THIS SONG STUCK IN MY HEAD FOR THREE DAYS?!?!? Probably because I’ve been listening to it nonstop for three days now…Not entirely sure how the hell that happened. Looking up Iggy Pop on Youtube then clicking on related videos somehow brought me to Meat Loaf and ever since then I haven’t been able to stop. Whatever haha.

Anyway, I ran today! Yay! Apparently a few days off was just what I needed, because I felt pretty darn good today.:) I did three easy miles, that didn’t exactly feel easy because of wind gusts of up to 40 mph. That definitely made things interesting, but kinda fun actually. What was not fun was the fact that it was 62 degrees. I do not like the hot 😦 (and with that, the whining about warm weather has officially started). I guess this means I’m going to have to start waking up earlier, and I won’t be able to meander around my house for as long as I want to before I run anymore. I’m going to have to start getting out the door as early as possible, before the sun gets all the way up and heating up the pavement. Bleh. I’m really not looking forward to summer running.

img_2081

I spent a good majority of this run holding my hat on my head. It’s been crazy windy today!

Speaking of the weather, it’s been pretty crazy here today! We’ve been under three different warnings through the day. We’ve been under a fire weather warning for a week or two now, We were under a wind advisory from 1-6 pm, and we’re currently under a tornado watch. That started at around 3 pm. So yeah, no one is suppose to burn anything in pretty much the whole state of Kansas, there’s been trash flying around my neighborhood today and every once in a while I’ll here something get knocked over by the wind, and the conditions outside are ideal for tornado weather right now. Fun times!

The whole tornado thing doesn’t really bother me though. I’ve lived in the Midwest my whole life, so tornado watches are just a very common occurrence in the spring and summer. I even lived through a tornado that touched down near my parents’ house in Illinois 5 or 6 years ago! Granted, it wasn’t a very big tornado, but it’s still cool to be able to say that. 😉 And besides, I don’t even live in tornado ally. The crazy amount of wind and fire advisories are still kinda new to me though. Back in Illinois I lived on a flood plain and near enough to the Mississippi river that wildfires weren’t something we really had to worry about, but apparently here in Kansas it’s something we have to be mindful of.

So I know I tend to drone on and on about the weather, but this kind of stuff absolutely fascinates me! Especially severe weather. A lot of people think I’m crazy, but I absolutely love watching thunderstorms roll in. It’s literally my favorite pass time in the summer. I get super excited every time I see a thunderstorm in the weather forecast, and have spent a lot of time sitting on my front porch here in Kansas or my mom and dad’s back deck in Illinois just watching lightning. Maybe I should have been a storm chaser or something haha. I mean, sometimes I plan my runs around thunderstorms. I really like going out right before a storm front moves in and then try to get my run done before the storm actually hits. I usually end up getting rained on, which I don’t mind one bit, but that’s probably a dangerous game to play. But come on, life’s no fun without a little bit of danger. 😉

So even though I’m not a fan of summer and I absolutely hate hot weather, at least I have something to look forward to during the summer months. I’m just hoping this year wont be as dry as last year was. That was no fun…

What’s your favorite kind of weather?

Running in the rain, yay or nay?

Are you excited for summer and the coming of warmer weather?
