Happy blogging birthday to me!!

img_7539

As of Tuesday I’ve been blogging here for 3 years! I thought that was pretty neat! I’ve met some really cool people and have felt like I was a part of an awesome community thanks to this blog. It’s been a fun 3 years! πŸ™‚

Coincidentally, 3 years ago was when I started to get into races. I did my first half marathon in November of 2015 and then I did my very first organized “5k” in December of that year. My first 5k-ing experience was definitely an interesting one! The race I did was a super small, Christmas themed one, put on by one of the churches in my town. Unfortunately they don’t put it on anymore or else I totally would have done it again! I think it was one of the most unique races I’ve done as of yet!

  • It was held at night. As far as I know most races are held in the morning, so that was pretty cool! Especially because of all of the Christmas lights!! Which was the whole point of running at night, I suppose.
  • No race bibs. We were given Santa hats that had tiny Santa’s on them that light up instead.
  • Santa drove the course in a lime green VW beetle with the top pulled down and all decked out with Christmas lights. That was a lot of fun!
  • There were maybe 30 people who ran it? That took β€œsmall, local race” to a whole new level!
  • The finish line was one of those little yard tent things you use to shade patios in the summer. Covered in Christmas lights of course! 😊 No fancy time display, timing mats, or time chips.
  • Soooo many people from my town were out cheering on the runners! Honestly this race probably had the best crowd support I’ve ever experienced! And why not?!? It was our friends, neighbors, and police force cheering us on!
  • Remember how I said there was no fancy timing equipment? Apparently there was no measuring of the course either. This run was advertised as a 5k, but it actually came out to be around 3.03 miles. Not a big deal though. At the end of the day it was all just got fun. 😊
  • And last but not least, there was hot chocolate and cookies for all and the end! What’s not to love about that?! πŸͺ

img_7562

Seriously, it was one of the most interesting and probably most fun runs I’ve ever done! πŸŽ…πŸ»πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈ And can we just take a second to appreciate how long my hair was?!? Jeez that was kind of excessive and I kinda miss it. πŸ˜‚

Also, fun little fact; that’s the only race I’ve ever done that I didn’t write a race recap for haha. But I mean, I pretty much summed it all up now. So that’ count’s for something, right? πŸ˜‰

Anyway, I just want to take a second to acknowledge how big Whiskey is getting!!

Processed with Rookie Cam

She was such a tiny little thing when we got her, but she is growing into a beautiful dog! Haha you can see one of her ears has gone up. I thought she was going to end up with floppy ears, but it’s looking like I was wrong!! That one just kinda shot up over night! Every once in a while the other one will go up too, but it usually doesn’t stay that way long. But I’m thinking eventually it will end up being pricked too. Hahaha honestly I’m pretty excited about that! Obviously it really doesn’t matter much, but I do like dogs with pricked ears. πŸ™‚

She is a very well built little puppy. She’s been going through a growth spurt and gained 6 pounds in a month hahaha. The vet is thinking she’ll get up to be around 30-35 pounds and I was thinking the same thing. Our vet is also pretty supportive of us breeding Finn to her as long as she doesn’t have any kind of health issues pop up, which is unlikely but it’s always a possibility.

Whiskey and Lily

Hahaha my house is super duper Christmas-y right now and it makes me super happy! πŸ™‚ And now I’ve finally got a gift under my tree!! I’m literally the worst gift wrapper in the world, but Luke’s been threatening to go snooping for what I got him for Christmas so I had to wrap that today. But other than that, that’s the only gift we have under the tree. We’ve mailed some off so we aren’t like behind on Christmas shopping or anything, so that’s good. I temporarily had two under my tree! The little neighbor girl I babysit turned 5 yesterday so I had her gift under the tree for a whole hour haha. She came over today so obviously I gave it to her. Getting gifts is great, but honestly I think I like giving people something I know they’ll really like more! That’s always a great feeling. πŸ™‚ And my neighbor seemed really happy with what I got her. It was just a stuffed Stitch (from Lilo and Stitch πŸ˜‰ ). She told me she was definitely going to sleep with him tonight, so I figured that meant she liked him haha.

Anyway, last night Green Day put out a new music video as kind of a Christmas gift for their fans. Obviously I was pretty excited about that because they are my favorite haha. But I thought it was especially cool because it’s made up of a bunch of different clips from their Revolution Radio tour and they included a bunch of different clips of fans. I just think its really awesome that Green Day seems to love their fans just as much as their fans love them and when they do things like this it just makes you feel like you’re a part of something, ya know?

Hahaha I haven’t fangirl-ed in a while, so I’m not gonna apologize for doing it this time. πŸ˜‰

Okey Dokey, that’s all for today!

Happy Friday eve, I hope everyone is enjoying the Christmas season!

Thursday Things

Hi, my name is Ashley and I’m a little bit obsessed with a band called Green Day. But we all already knew that, right? πŸ˜‰

This is relevant, I swear!!

Tuesday (May 15th) was the 9th anniversary of the release of 21st Century Breakdown. That is just absolutely crazy!! This album (along with Hollywood Undead’s Swan Songs) was basically the soundtrack to my junior and senior years of high school. So today I wanted to share with you the story of what I did the day 21st Century Breakdown came out 9 years ago. It’s not a long or a particularly exciting story, but it is kind of ridiculous! And if I could go back, I’d totally do it again!!

img_1685

So, May 15th, 2009. It was the end of my junior year of high school and the day Green Day’s much anticipated follow up to American Idiot came out. I couldn’t tell you what day of the week it was (although I’m sure I could figure it out after a few minutes of googling haha), but I knew I totally wasn’t going to school that day! You see Green Day was (and still is) my favorite. At that point everyone knew it. And I was just as intrigued, interested, and excited to see how the hell they were going to follow up the masterpiece that is American Idiot. I’m pretty sure I hadn’t shut up about it since we knew that they had started recording a new album. Haha some things never change…

Anyway, I have no idea how this happened. I don’t remember even asking, but on that day my mom let me skip school so we could go to the mall and buy the CD at Hot Topic. Which was insane! I had already pre-orderd the album on Itunes with a gift card I had, but now I had a chance to get a physical copy on the day it came out?! There was no way I was gonna pass up on that! So after my sisters took our younger brother to grade school and then went to high school themselves, my mom and I went to the mall. So just a little side note, I had to get the CD at Hot Topic because at Hot Topic you got a free t-shirt when you bough the CD, and obviously I needed that free shirt! πŸ˜‰

So yeah, other than that the day was relatively uneventful. I got the CD and the free shirt, then spent the rest of the day listening to the album on repeat. After that day that CD ended up living in Luke’s old, shitty Beretta because my old, shitty Saturn didn’t have a CD player haha. And we always listened to either 21st Century Breakdown or Swan Songs while we did little shithead teenager things. And that’s the story of the time I skipped school because of Green Day.

And continuing in the spirit of Throwback Thursday, here’s a photo of me from around that time period. I had to have been 17 or 18 in this photo. I thought I was such hot shit back then haha. And note all of that 21st Century Breakdown artwork on my wall. I do kinda miss having all sorts of neat stuff on my wall like that. πŸ˜‰

img_1751

So in celebration of the album that was often playing in the background of my late teenage years, I had to listen to it during my run today. Haha for as much as I listened to it back in high school, it’s been a while since I’ve listened to 21st Century Breakdown all the way through. I got a little bit too excited, went out too fast, and was absolutely dead at 3 miles. So I stopped right about then and went to work in the garden.

Luckily I didn’t have to doΒ tooΒ much work in the garden today. Mostly just did some watering and weeding. But everything is looking really good out there! The warm sunny day’s we’ve been having are making my tomatoes grow like crazy, which is awesome! And my peach tree is covered in little tiny peaches! I’m really hoping that this is the year we actually get a few to grow big enough to get ripe! We’ve had this tree for going on 3 years now and we’ve yet to get a single peach from it!

But anyway, summer running is hard. The heat and humidity do me in every time. It’s not fun but I know struggling through it makes me a better runner and will make me stronger in the fall. That being said, I believe I’m done with races until the fall. Running With The Cows was a lot of fun, and I got really close to my goal, but the humidity that day was awful and I felt pretty terrible for a few days afterwards. So my goal for this summer, just like every summer, is just to survive haha. Oh man I’m already ready for fall!

And last but not least for today, I’ve got another coupon code for StrideBox!! Yay!

You can use the code ASHLEY10OFF at checkout to get $10 off of one box. The code is only good through May 31st, so if you were looking to give StrideBox a try now might be a good chance to go for it! But that code doesn’t last long, so you’ll have to do it fast! πŸ™‚

img_0205

Now for the sake of all transparency, I am a StrideBox ambassador and I get my StrideBoxes for free. But I only ever represent brands and company’s that I actually use and love, and I really do love StrideBox. Getting a box full of fun running goodies once a month is pretty freaking awesome! And I’ve never been disappointed in what came in a box. There’s always stuff in there that I could use or have wanted to try. And don’t even get me started on the yummy snacks!! πŸ™‚

img_1517

I hope that didn’t soundΒ tooΒ much like an ad. I’m not exactly trying to sell you guys stuff. It’s more like I’m recommending things that I like, and if I have a code or know of a sale that I can share, then heck yes I’m gonna share it for anyone who may be interested in it after hearing me talking about it!! Or at least, that’s what I’m trying to go for anyway. πŸ˜‰

Anyways, that’s all for today!

Until next time,

~Ashley

Thursday Things

Ah Thursday. My my favorite day to do a bunch of random ramblings. πŸ˜‰

So I guess we should get some running talk out of they way. Or well, kinda lack there of. I have been suffering from a bit of a stomach thing. I’m not sure what or why, and I’ll spare you all of the gory details, but it’s kinda sucked haha. On Monday I tried to run but only made it a mile before I had to call it quits. So on Tuesday I took the day off, rested, and ate a lot of potatoes and white rice. Fun times. I was feeling a little bit better on Wednesday and got out and ran, but only 2 miles. That’s definitely better than nothing though! Today I just wasn’t feeling it. I could have run. Probably should have run. But I ended up doing 30 minutes of yoga instead.

img_0613

Not sure what caused my stomach troubles. I haven’t really been eating anything different, new, or weird. I guess I just got some kinda bug or something. Whatever. I seem to be getting better and that’s all that matters. πŸ™‚

I have made one slight adjustment to my diet though. I’ve been making myself oatmeal for breakfast for about the last week now! That’s kind of a big deal for me. I’m not all that big into making myself a decent meal for breakfast. That just takes extra effort that I don’t feel like putting into my food first thing in the morning. But breakfast is the most important meal of the day, as they say. So I figure I should be eating a little something more than just a piece of fruit, a cheese stick, a Honey Stinger waffle, or even worse, just coffee. Eating a bowl of oatmeal every morning seems to be doing me quite a bit of good though! I’m not absolutely starving about halfway through the morning and usually just need a small snack a few hours before lunch. So actually taking the time to make a decent breakfast seems to be a good habit for me to be in.

img_0625

Yay oatmeal!

My oatmeal for breakfast habit might be a little difficult to keep up with this weekend though. On Saturday night Luke and I are going to be driving to St. Louis, so he can spend Easter with his dad, step mom, and two of his brothers. And I’ll get to spend at my grandma’s house with my mom, brother, and uncle. So my grandma is going to have a pretty full house for Easter. I’m sure that’ll make her really happy! πŸ™‚ It’ll be fun for all of us though. I believe on Monday Luke plans on taking his brothers, my brother, and obviously myself to the St. Louis zoo! I sure hope we get to do that! the St. Louis zoo is so much fun!! I’m pretty sure it’s one of the best zoos in the country (at the very least it’s about 100 times better than the Kansas City zoo). And if you’re willing to walk a little bit there are plenty of places to park for free in Forest Park, so you don’t have to pay for parking and entry to the zoo is free. Pretty awesome. πŸ™‚

Anyway, not sure what my family will be doing for Easter. We used to go to Church every Easter (and every Sunday really), but I’m not sure that’s what we will be doing. But I’m sure my grandma and Uncle will make a bunch of yummy food! You can always count on them to cook on holidays! I wonder if my grandma will have her Easter tree out (or even if she still has it). Did you guys have an Easter tree? Haha I’ve just recently learned that’s something that not everyone does! Apparently it’s a German tradition, which does make a lot of sense. My mom’s side of my family is super German. My late grandpa’s parents immigrated here before he was born. Pretty neat! So I’ve grown up doing a lot of German things without even really knowing it. That also explains why my family is of the Lutheran denomination haha. πŸ˜‰

So here’s a photo of me (I’m the one standing up) and my sisters (yes they’re twins) on Easter in 1997. So that would be the year before my brother was born. It’s not a great photo, but you can kinda see our Easter tree on the table. πŸ˜‰

img_0627-1

Here’s a better photo of one from Google. πŸ™‚

51ulXgxburL

A few people in my neighborhood have decorated trees and bushes in there front yards for Easter, so that’s pretty neat!

Anyway,Β  it’s been a super muddy mess outside because it’s been pretty rainy and wet out. My backyard is basically a giant mud pit and Dean and Finn are both super gross. They’re gonna have to be bathed before we got to St. Louis on Saturday. They’re not gonna be happy about that, because after they’re clean, the won’t be able to go back outside and that’s where they both prefer to be pretty much all day, every day.

img_0628

So. Much. Mud…

So, remember almost 2 weeks ago when I ordered a pair of running tights from Oiselle? The ones with all of the pockets that I was so super excited about?? Yeah, they still haven’t gotten here yet…

img_0429-1

So. Many. Pockets!!

It’s the UPS’s fault. Every time I order something online and it ships via the UPS it always ends up getting delayed. Never for this long before though… So on Tuesday I emailed Oiselle to if they knew anything about the situation with my order. All they could tell me was that it’s delayed with the carrier (but I’m hoping they’ve contacted the UPS and they’re working on getting my package to me), but they were kind enough to refund me the $8 I paid for 3 day shipping. I really appreciate how quickly Oiselle got back to me and that they were kind enough to refund my shipping charge. That was great! This morning I reported it to the UPS as a lost package, so hopefully they’ll be able to find it and finally get it to me. I was so excited about all of those pockets and I really want to put them to use!!!

img_0631

So semi related, but when my feet were feeling a little bit sore last week I realized that the only compression gear I have for my feet are holiday themed (Thanksgiving and Christmas to be exact). Really that’s not a big deal and obviously that’s not gonna stop me from wearing them when I need them, but I still thought that was boring, so I spent some time waiting for Zensah’s watermelon socks to be restocked and yesterday they finally were, so I bought myself a pair! πŸ™‚ Luckily those are coming through the USPS so at least I know they’ll get here when they’re supposed to and I wont have to wait who know’s how long for them to get here.

Anyway, I’m thinking that’s all I’ve got for today!

Happy Thursday!

Fall Is Almost Here, Two Short Runs, An Injury Update, Compression Gear, and Another Furry Friend

First and foremost, #ThrowbackThursday anyone? πŸ˜‰ Ah man, throwback Thursday never ceases to amuse me. I just think it’s fun to take a look back at past life experiences, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they might be.

So, since fall is almost here and I’m so super duper excited about that, I went perusing through the camera roll on my phone this morning looking for the photos of my jack-o-lanterns from last year, because they were pretty darn spiffy if you ask me!!

I was so super excited about how the 13.1 pumpkin turned out! I was kinda worried about it because I thought it was going to be hard to tell what it was, but once it was lit up it looked pretty good! And look at all the hair I used to have!! Haha not gonna lie, looking back I kinda regret cutting it all off. But it was sooo much nicer not having to deal with all of that hot hair over the summer. But anyways, now I’ve got to figure out what I want to do with this years pumpkins! Haha obviously I’ve still got some time, but I take this stuff very seriously! πŸ˜‰ We’re starting to get close to my favorite time of year and I’m so super stoked!!

img_6248

TRUE!!!!!

So now that we’re into the middle of September we’re starting to experience a bit of fall like weather in the morning/evening. The highs in the afternoon have been in the 80’s though so that still kinda sucks, but we’ll get to the colder weather eventually. πŸ™‚ But anyways, the nice weather in the morning is really reallyΒ reallyΒ making me miss running. Fall running is the best running (except once winter rolls around, then I’ll spend all season telling you that winter running is the best πŸ˜‰ ) and right now I definitely feel like I’m missing out!!

I have managed to do two very short runs this week. 2 miles on Monday and 2 more miles on Wednesday. That’s definitely not the kind of running I should be doing considering that I’m supposed to be training for my 3rd half marathon, but at the moment it’s the only kind of running I can do. And it’s still totally better than not running at all!!

Unfortunately the 4 miles that I’ve run this week were not pain free miles. During both runs my knee started to ache a bit during the second mile and on Wednesday I felt it a little bit in my shin as well. That was no bueno…but it’s still not as bad as it was last month and I like to think it’s finally starting to get better. Healing this whole situation has definitely been a slow process, but I’m glad that it seems to be getting better without the help of a doctor. Because IΒ reallyΒ didn’t want to have to go see one haha.

So I think I’ve mentioned before that I’ve been taking R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation) very seriously in order to get this thing taken care of. Obviously the rest has come in the form of not running, but I’ve also been trying to take it easy and walk a little less if it starts bothering me. I was icing it for a while but that doesn’t seem to be doing anything for it anymore. And honestly I’m pretty sure icing is really only effective for the first like, 48 hours or something like that after you’ve been injured (I’m not entirely sure about that though, so don’t quote me on it. πŸ˜‰ ). So that brings me to compression and elevation. As far as elevation goes, I’ve just been propping my leg up with a pillow in the evening whenever i’m sitting down watching TV, but my compression game has definitely been VERY strong!

img_6164

I’m sporting a very old compression sock and a very new compression knee sleeve in this photo.

So Luke’s just as determined to get me healthy again as quickly as possible so he’s been making me experiment with some new gear haha. First he got me the knee sleeve pictured above. Oh boy does that thing work! I didn’t realize that my knee was actually hurting while I was walking until I started wearing this thing around haha (this right here is why I have to be super careful when it comes to injures. I have a ridiculous pain tolerance and sometimes I don’t notice that anythings going on until after it goes away and I start feeling normal again…). And after wearing it for about a week I was able to do my two short runs this week, which was obviously a huge improvement over not being able to run at all. πŸ™‚ So because I had quite a bit of success with the knee brace, Luke thought hey, if a little bit of compression worked, why not go with EVEN MORE compression. So he came home with a pair of full on compression tights for me the other day haha. I kinda wish he hadn’t spent so much money on me for this stuff, compression gear (especially these tights, holy shit) isn’t cheap…but I mean, they are some super spiffy looking tights. πŸ™‚

Processed with Rookie Cam

I’ve only worn them once, so at this point there’s really no telling if they made a difference, but they’re still super spiffy. πŸ™‚

So all of that actually came about because I had ordered myself a new pair of Zensah compression calf sleeves (like I said, my compression socks are really old, and I’ve had to cut the toes off of both pairs that I have because they make my toes uncomfortable, so I figured sleeves were the way to go. πŸ˜‰ ) and a sports bra at some point last week, I think? The only problem with that is that Zensah’s warehouse is located in southern Florida so they had to close up shop and evacuate because of hurricane Irma, so I guess they’re not entirely sure when they’ll be able to ship out anything. And like, obviously that’s totally understandable and I don’t mind waiting, but Luke is not a patient person and apparently that applies to me as well, and that’s how I ended up with even more compression gear hahahahaha.

So like, I know compression gear is one of those things that some people absolutely swear by and other people just think is a placebo kinda thing, but it’s always seemed to work for me so I’m just gonna roll with it! πŸ™‚

Whew, alrighty then! Last on my agenda of this to talk about today is our newest furry friend! Everyone, meet Alfred!

img_6368

So kind of on a whim I guess, Luke decided that our other ferret, Bruce, needed a friend. So he went and got him one last night. Hahaha if you haven’t noticed, once Luke sets his mind on something he just goes and does it. And that’s how we ended up with another ferret. It’s really funny because everyone thinks all of the animals were my idea (because I’m the huge animal lover who was raised on a farm), but aside from the cats and Lily, Luke’s the one who went out and got the rest of them haha. I mean, I’m not complaining though. πŸ˜‰

At first we were both a little wary about introducing them to each other. Luckily we have two ferret cages so if it didn’t go well we could have kept them separate, but it looks like that’s not going to be a problem. They pretty much liked each other right off the bat and are already becoming fast friends. So I guess Luke was right, getting Bruce a friend was a good idea. And I mean, what good is Bruce Wayne without Alfred Pennyworth? πŸ˜‰

img_6385

Okey dokey then! That’s all I’ve got to talk about for today! I’ve been doing a terrible job at keeping up with everyone lately, so what’s going on with you? Are you excited about fall? Any up coming races, spiffy new gear, new furry friends, new PR’s, or are you sidelined with an injury as well?

Anyways, I hope everyone has a happy Friday eve, a great Friday tomorrow, and an even better weekend!

Throwback Thursday: The Grand Canyon, 2014

Sometimes I feel like I haven’t seen or done enough. Like I’ve spent too much time in the same place, doing the same old same old. Days when those thoughts start creeping into my head are days that I have to remind myself that, even though I’m not the most well traveled person in the world, I’ve been to some awesome places and done some pretty exciting things!

At this point in my life I’ve been to Florida more times than I can count, I’ve been to Indiana, Washington D.C., the Caribbean, California (but that was only for a day, so it barely counts), Mexico, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and I’ve been able to go hiking in Utah, Arizona, and Colorado.

Since several of those trips were road trips, which means I’ve covered quite a bit of ground in few sates; Missouri (which hardly counts since I grew up so close to St. Louis haha), Illinois (that ones iffy, since I lived there for the first 20 years of my life), Tennessee, Georgia, Kansas (but I live in Kansas so…), Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Iowa, and Minnesota. So not bad, right? I mean Β some people never leave they’re home states, let alone travel across or outside of the country.

So anyway, earlier this morning I was looking through some of my road trip and adventuring photos and I decided that I wanted to share some photos from our Grand Canyon road trip! πŸ™‚

Early in 2014 Luke and I decided that we wanted to go on a camping trip. After much debate and discussion we finally decided on the Grand Canyon. We also decided we wanted to take two of his brothers, because one of them had always wanted to go to the Grand Canyon, and the other kind one kind of already did everything with us anyway (and now he currently lives with us, but obviously that’s a different story).

So long story short, in June of 2014 we packed up our SUV and began our journey from Kansas to Arizona. After 14 or 15 hours of driving we stopped in Utah for the night, and then made it into Arizona and then to the Grand Canyon the next day. We camped at a camp sight in the Grand Canyon national park over the weekend, and we did a bunch of hiking, exploring, and other camping activities. πŸ™‚
