It’s Going To Be A Long Summer…

Good thing I have a treadmill now, because this keeps happening…

img_3132-1.jpg

I can’t run outside in this!

Well, technically I could, but it probably wouldn’t end well for me. Especially not with that air quality warning. So I’m just gonna stick with my treadmill for now and hope that I’ll get at least one day this week that I’ll be able to run outside, because I’m not exactly confident in my ability to run anymore than 5 miles on the treadmill haha. I did 7 a few weeks ago, but I wanted to absolutely die by the time I was done. πŸ˜‚

Plus training for “Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days” officially starts on the 22nd of this month, and I’d really like to do most of those runs outside. Having the treadmill is nice, but it’s just not the same as running on the road. And since both half marathons I’m doing in November on on the road (well, part of one is on a paved trail πŸ˜‰ ), I know it would be best to do a pretty good majority of my running on the roads. But if this weather keeps up I’m gonna have to suck it up and run on the treadmill. I’d rather do that than risk my health by running outside in dangerous weather conditions. Says the girl who intentionally runs during thunderstorms and has an absolute blast running on ice haha. But for real though, I’m really sensitive to the heat and I have asthma. It’s not bad, but I still have to be careful when the air quality sucks.

So I’m not exactly thrilled about the weather and the prospect of starting out my half marathon training mostly on the treadmill. But at least I have that option now! If we would have had this kind of weather last summer, before I had the treadmill, I’d have been completely screwed. Sure I’ve got the stationary bike, but that probably wouldn’t really help that much. But anyway, I haven’t really been completely stuck inside. Luke and I have been going for little walks in the evening, right around sunset, so it’s not too crazy hot out. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still hot, humid, and gross out. But it’s decent enough to go for short walks in. I’m not confident enough to actually run in it though haha. But at the very least I’m getting outside and moving around a little bit.

I’m currently dreaming of chilly October nights.Β πŸ‚πŸŒ™πŸ¦‡πŸŽƒ

What really sucks about this weather is that while we’ve had plenty of heat, we’ve had hardly any rain. Like, it’s for real been weeks since we’ve gotten any rain, and the last time we did it really wasn’t much. So I’ve been kinda struggling to keep our garden going. All of our plants are just wilty and sun burnt. But I have gotten a pretty decent amount of strawberries and blueberries! I think I’m getting towards the end of those plants producing though. I’ve got 3 nice little watermelons growing, my peaches are slowly starting to get bigger, and my zucchini plants are producing like crazy! And my tomatoes are finally starting to get ripe! The plants have had little green fruit on them for a while now, but it’s been so crazy hot that it’s taking forever for them to turn red. I picked a whole bunch of nice little cherry tomatoes yesterday though!

We’ve also been keeping the tiny raptors outside for the last week or so. They’re finally big enough to keep out in the coop, and obviously we haven’t had to worry about it being too cold for them! I run out there to check on them several times a day though. I don’t want them getting too hot. But so far they seem to be doing really well!!

img_3060-1

They’re getting moved back inside this weekend though, but only for a little bit. Our family trip to Branson, Mo is next week and we don’t want them outside while we’re gone. Luckily they’ll only actually be on their own for 3 full days. Luke and I are leaving Kansas on the 16th, probably in the late morning. First we have to drop the dogs off at a kennel. I grew up working in a kennel, so obviously I know they’ll be fine, but they’ve never been boarded before, so I know they’re gonna be completely freaked out. Poor babies… Luckily the’re all going to be kept in the same kennel run together, so I think that will help. I’m going to make it very clear that I do not want them separated. Sometimes they growl and snap at each other and when they play it can look like they’re actually fighting, but they’re not. They just work things out between each other like that.Β  And if you know dogs then you probably know that, but some people tend to freak out the second teeth start snapped at each other. But anyway, then we’ll be in Branson the 17th, 18th, and 19th, and then we’re driving back home on the 20th. It’s only a 4 hour drive, so I think if we leave early enough we’ll be there in time to pick up the dogs before the kennel closes. If not then I guess they’ll just have to spend another night there.

Anyway, I got the dogs’ vet records for the kennel this morning and I’ve kinda sorta started packing for this trip. Haha I guess I should get on that, huh? I mean, I’ve made a list and pretty much know everything that Luke and I are gonna need, so that counts for something, right? We’ll both probably still wait until the night before we leave to actually pack. πŸ˜‰

But that’s all for today! How’s the weather where you are? Hopefully better that it is here in Kansas…

Your treadmill bound friend,

~Ashley

Weekly Recap: June 25th-July 1st, 2018

This week I’ve been insanely grateful for my new treadmill! It’s been another hot one here in Kansas; with a few thunderstorms, high humidity, and air quality warnings. So definitely not ideal running weather haha. I did manage to get out and do some outdoor running, but most of it was done on the treadmill this week. But with heat indexes around 105 degrees, there was no way I was going to be able to do much outside. So thank goodness for my treadmill! Because of it I was still able to get my running done this week! πŸ™‚

img_2793

This was just from Tuesday! Both alerts ended up getting extended!

Monday:Β

  • 3 miles

It was actually relatively cool on Monday! I wasn’t about to waste that, so I hit the road that morning. We had some thunderstorms come through and even more that were nearby and that left the temperatures in the high 60’s in the morning. Not bad for late June!! The only downside was that those storms made it pretty darn humid! But I mean, it is summertime in the Midwest. It’s ALWAYS humid this time of year haha.

img_2767

Tuesday:Β

  • 2 miles
  • 30 minutes strength training
  • 10 minutes stretching

71 degrees + 90% humidity = the poor man’s altitude training. Haha seriously! Summer running is no freaking joke and it actually does help your body create more red blood cells, similar to the way altitude training does! And knowing this, I decided to take this run outside as well. I kinda didn’t want to haha, but I figured it was so short there was really no reason for me not to. I was completely drenched in sweat by the time I was done though!!

Followed up my run with some strength training. My current goal is to get stronger and hopefully a little more injury resistant since I’m going to be running two half marathons in two days this November, so I’ve been fitting in a couple of strength sessions every week. Haha I can already see the difference in my tiny little biceps! Now that being said, my heals have been kinda hurting me. I know exactly why too, like, two weeks ago I think, I ran too far in a pair of shoes that were too worn out…oops. I had a similar problem when I had first started running by wearing a pair of shoes that were too supportive for my feet. So I’ve been working on getting my feet back to feeling well. Lots of calf and foot stretching, along with ice, and rolling my feet with one of those little massage ball things. Last time I had this issue it lasted a while. Hopefully that wont be the case this time, but we shall see.

Wednesday:

  • 7 treadmill miles
  • 10 minutes stretching

Holy cow! I feel like this run was more exhausting on the treadmill that it would have been on the road! My goal was actually 8 miles but once I got to 7 I just couldn’t spend another minute on my treadmill. I like it, it’s a really nice treadmill, and I’m extremely grateful to have it because getting in 7 miles on Wednesday probably wouldn’t have happened. All day I was getting air quality alerts and excessive heat warning on my phone haha. But jeez louise running on the treadmill is hard! Like, I’m actually going slower, but it feels harder. I’m just awkward and not good at running on treadmills, I guess. I also felt kinda dizzy getting off the treadmill. Probably because I was moving, but not really moving, ya feel me? Oh and treadmill running is hopelessly boring. Watching Hulu helped, but still. Haha anyway, this was the longest run I’ve ever done on a treadmill and I was very glad to be done with it!

img_2802

Also, my latest Honey Stinger order came on Wednesday!! Since training for my half marathons on November 10th and 11th (yup, two half’s in two days. That’s slightly terrifying and a potentially bad decision on my part! I still haven’t gotten over that yet. 🀣) officially starts on July 22nd, so I figured now would be a good time to top off my Honey Stinger supply!! The sick new hat and Hive stickers were an added bonus that were just too good to pass up! πŸπŸ―πŸ˜„Β I’ve already put on of the stickers on my laptop. Now I just need to figure out what I want to do with the other 4 haha.

img_2808

Thursday:

  • 2 miles

The excessive heat warning continues with no end in sight… So on Thursday my run was done on the treadmill again. It was slow and unpleasant, but at least it got done. πŸ™‚

img_2830

Friday:

  • Rest Day
  • 40 minutes stretching

And a much needed one too! This heat just wears me out!! I did some stretching though and felt pretty good after that! πŸ˜„

Saturday:

  • 3.5 morning miles
  • 2 afternoon miles

Saturday was yet another hot and humid day. IΒ really didn’t want to run on the treadmill that morning though, so I decided to just take my run outside and see how far I could go until I felt like I was going to die. Apparently 3.5 miles was my limit haha. It felt good to get outside and run on the road though! πŸ™‚ Then a little later that afternoon I figured why not got for a total of 5 miles for the day and ended up running 2 miles on the treadmill, which obviously got me to 5.5 miles for the day. πŸ™‚

Sunday:Β

  • Rest Day

Yesterday I was kinda thinking that I could run a mile or two to get my weekly mileage up over 20, but I got a little bit wine drunk last night and didn’t really feel like running today. πŸ˜‰Β Not like that’s a big deal or anything. Sunday’s are usually a rest day for me anyway, and since half marathon training starts later this month I might as well start getting into the habit of doing certain things on certain days. πŸ˜‰

So I didn’t run today, but I did do some walking. Last night in my slightly drunken state (haha I drank almost 2 bottles of wine, slightly may be a bit of an understatement. πŸ˜‰ ) I decided that I was going to start playing Pokemon Go again. So at midnight, slightly drunk, and all alone (because Luke was too busy playing Call Of Duty with his dad and brother), I walked like, 2 blocks to the civics center to hit a few Pokestops. And since I did that I decided I really wanted to start playing Pokemon Go again, so that’s what I’ve done today. Walked dogs and played Pokemon Go haha. It’s been kinda fun though. πŸ˜‰

Total Weekly Mileage: 19.55Β

Not bad considering the terrible weather!! This kinda stuff usually puts a damper on my running, but thanks to my treadmill I’ve still been able to get some miles in! πŸ™‚ Hopefully the weather will be a little better next week, but as of right now it doesn’t look like this heat is going to be letting up…

But anyway, happy first day of July!! I hope everyone has a safe and fun 4th of July!! We’ve currently got a few things planned so that should be exciting!

But that’s all for now!

Until next time,

~Ashley

Florida Vacation: Day 6

Finally! It was tattoo day!!!

We also actually got up and moving and out the door at a decent time this morning. You guys have no idea how happy I was about that! I’ve been so tired I am Of sitting around waiting to do stuff.

Anyway, we got out the door around 8:30 this morning so we could get to the flea market when it first opened, because we had a few things we wanted to get there, but they closed at 5 pm and our tattoos weren’t going to be done by then. So we got that all taken care of right away.

After that we drove back to the house so we could pick up Luke’s step sisters, because they wanted to get tattoos as well. Once they were ready we all piled into the bus and made our way to the tattoo shop.

Once we got there the artist talks to one of Luke’s step sisters, drew her tattoo, and then knocked it out in about 40 minutes. It was already bandaged so I didn’t get to see it right away, but apparently it was exactly what she wanted and she was surprised at how quickly he got it done.

Once the artist was done with her he cleaned up his tattoo room and then it was my turn. πŸ˜„ So Luke and I both got two tattoos today, he got bigger ones than I did, but I got a little 13.1 on my ankle and a border collie on my forearm.

He did my ankle first. That only took about 5 minutes and it hardly hurt at all. πŸ˜„ The border collie probably took about 30-40 minutes. That one hurt a little more, and it bled a lot, but it looks great! Well, they both look fantastic! I’m so super happy with them. πŸ˜„

Once I was done it was Luke’s turn. His took forever haha, but he got a bigger, more intricate tattoo than either of mine. First he got Japanese lettering on his ribs. That only took about 40 minutes. Then he got the wolf on his chest done. It took an hour to do the outline, but it looked so good, even just as an outline.

Again, it looked better in person, but you get the point. πŸ˜„

It took about another 2 hours to finish after the outline was done, and Luke was in a lot of pain, but now that it’s done it looks amazing!

Now we’re sitting in the bus waiting for Luke’s other step sister to get her tattoo done. Once we get home we’re going to start cleaning up the house and packing because we’re leaving tomorrow morning.

Happy Friday!

~Ashley

Our Vacation Is Almost Here!

Today is basically the last “normal” day we’re going to have, and then it’s off to Florida! So here’s what the next few days are going to look like for me;

June 29th (tomorrow): My brother is driving from Illinois to Kansas so he can take care of our little zoo while Luke and I are gone (my brother in law and his girlfriend ((that’s Β a long story that I’m not going to get into)) are going to be here as well, but we don’t exactly trust them to be able to keep up with everything).

June 30th:Β At some point very early in the morning on Friday, Luke and I are leaving Kansas to go to Illinois. We’re hoping that we’ll get there early enough that we will be able to hang out with his dad and brothers for a little bit, and then with my grandma. Were actually leaving our car at her house, so I’m not sure how we’re going to work that all out yet, but I’m sure we’ll make it happen somehow. Anyway, after that we’re meeting up with Luke’s mom, her boyfriend and Luke’s younger brother and sister (who are driving to Illinois from Minnesota tomorrow), and Luke’s two step sisters (one of whom has 3 kids who are also coming with us) at Luke’s grandma’s house where we’re going to pack up the huge van/mini bus thing that we’re all going to be riding in, and then start our journey to Florida.

So Friday is going to be a super busy/hectic day for everyone. Luke’s mom wants to be on the road to Florida by 9 pm, which means we’ll be driving all through out the night and will probably put us at our destination in Florida by 12-1 pm (taking traffic, construction, and pit stops into consideration.

So on July 1st we’re probably just going to spend the rest of the day hanging out at the house and recuperating from that long ass drive hahaha. After that I’m not entirely sure what the itinerary is going to be. Luke’s mom is in charge of this trip and has quite a few things planned out for us though, so I’m sure we’ll never get bored!

Luke and I are also planning on getting a few tattoos while we’re down there (well, if we can find a good artist that is). He wants to go to a shop probably the day we get there, talk to an artist, and then make an appointment for both of us on Friday (the day before we leave). That way we’ll still be able to go swimming in the pool and ocean while we’re there. So, I’m not sure if Luke’s decided what he wants yet (he keeps changing his mind) but I’m finally getting a border collie tattoo that I’ve wanted for a very long time, and maybe a little 13.1 because I’m still very excited that I went from being a couch potato, to someone who’s run two half marathons. πŸ™‚

img_4337

Tiny, little border collie. πŸ™‚

So yeah, that is currently what I’ve got going on!

Today I’m going to get everything ready for my brother and write out a list for him so he’ll know what he’s going to be in charge of while we’re gone. And I think tonight Luke and I are going to go shopping and get a bunch of food for him so he has stuff to eat here haha. I also need to finish packing. I’m pretty much done, but I’ve still got a few odds and ends that need to be thrown into the suitcase, so I guess I need to go get started on all of that now.

Happy Hump-day!

~Ashley

Β Happy Independence Day!!

Our whole town has been celebrating all weekend. But I guess that’ll happen when you have 5 fireworks stands set up in a town of only 5,896 people. πŸ˜‰

We joined in with the festivities last night. Luke grilled hotdogs and brats, and we played with some small fireworks.

For today I think we’re just going to hang out at the house until tonight. Then we’ll probably go see the professional fireworks show. That’s always a good time. πŸ˜„

Have fun and stay safe out there! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έβ€οΈπŸ’™

Friday Fives: Things I Actually Sorta Enjoy About Summer

That’s right, I’m jumping on the Friday Fives bandwagon. No shame here! πŸ˜‰

Anyway, I know I bitch and complain a lot about how much I hate the summer, and I’m sure that gets really annoying really fast. So today I’m going to change things up a bit and talk about five things I actually like about summer time.

1. Plants

The trees have leafs, flowers are blooming, the grass is green, and my garden is growing!

Obviously there are still plants that grow in the fall/winter, but not like in the summer. I’ll be the first to admit that it is kinda nice to see everything vibrant and full of life after a winter of being dormant.

2. Fresh Produce

This is kinda related to number one, but most of my favorite fruits and veggies are in season this time of year!

Peaches, watermelon, berries, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, etc, they’re all in season and usually on sale at the grocery store. Not like we have to buy very much in the summer though, as we like to grow our own!

3. Lightning Bugs

Watching all the lighting bugs fly around at night always takes me back to my childhood summers.

My grandma and grandpa used to save these plastic containers we’d get from Bobby’s (a local frozen custard place) just for lightning bug hunting. My sisters and I would run around catching as many bugs as we could to put in our containers, then we’d keep them by our beds at night, and let them go in the morning. Good times. 😊

4. Frozen Treats

Ice cream, frozen yogurt, slushies, smoothies, popsicles, milk shakes, you get the idea, are always a good idea! But it all tastes soooo much better when the weather is hot!

5. Summer Thunderstorms

Here in the Midwest we get most of our sever storms in the summer and I’m a huge fan of them! I don’t know what it is about thunderstorms, but they make me super happy. I especially like watching the fronts move in and how calm everything gets right before they hit. Haha I guess that’s kinda weird, but whatever!

So there you have it! Actual proof that I don’t hate everything about the summer.

Home Sweet Home

We got a lot squeezed into one weekend! We hung out with my family, celebrated my dads 50th birthday/Father’s Day, visited with my grandmas and Luke’s grandma and aunt and uncle, and had Sunday dinner with Luke’s Dad’s whole side of the family.

My dad’s birthday cake. Haha I never once in my life thought that I’d ice a Barbies boobs, but here we are. πŸ˜‰

Whew! Told you it was a lot! And that’s just the list of people we saw.

I spent a lot of time outside, which was nice, but hot…I walked around my grandma’s property a lot. Since she’s selling her farm I wanted to start saying my goodbyes I guess.

Luke and I did a bit of target practice which was fun! We haven’t been able to shoot for a while since we don’t exactly have anywhere to do it. I’m Im glad to say that even though it’s been a while, I’m not rusty at all!

I brought running gear, but I didn’t get any running done. Hanging out with people and walking around the farm just seemed more important. My mom and I went for a few walks down the road with the dogs, though.

Oh man, we had fun, but it’s soooooo good to be home! We got in at about 7 pm last night after a 5 hour drive, that actually felt like 15. I swear that drive gets longer and longer every time we make it.

I think all of the outside activities in the heat really wore me down (the heat usually does). I was exhausted last night, and even after a relatively good nights sleep I’m still crazy tired.

I’m thinking I’m gonna skip running today. That pretty much means I’m giving up on upping my milage this week, but I think a rest day is more beneficial than trying to run, realizing it’s not going well, then cutting the run short, and being disappointed.

Happy Monday!!

~ Ashley
