Weekly Recap: July 30th – August 5th, 2018

Another great week of training is in the bag!

I did my last run of the week today and that officially wraps up week two of training for Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days. Obviously I’m not very far into my training, but at this point I’m feeling great physically and mentally! So lets get right into this week’s recap! πŸ™‚

Monday:

  • 3 easy miles

Kicked off the week with a nice and easy 3 miler. We had some pretty nice weather earlier this week and it was in the high 60’s when I did this run on Monday morning. It was pretty darn nice!

Tuesday:

  • 3 miles, intervals
  • 20 minutes of Pilates

Intervals! Yay!! Haha so it’s actually been a hot minute since I’ve done a real, actual interval workout so this one was pretty tough! My paces were a little slower than I would have liked, but like I said, it’s been a while. Plus by Tuesday it was starting to get a little more hot out again, so I’m not too worried about it. I’m still happy with what I got done! Followed my run with 20 minutes of Pilates because I’m working on that strength! All in all pretty happy with the work I put in on Tuesday.

WednesdayΒ 

  • 30 minutes of strength training

Day off from running but still put in some work! During my little strength session I kinda came to grips with the fact that I avoid push ups at all costs. They’re hard and I hate them haha. But since I’m trying to build strength through my entire body I figured maybe I should work on some of my weaknesses and this seemed like a good place to start, especially since it was the first day of August. So I decided to do a push up challenge thing for the month of August. Just to force myself to do them and hopefully at least get a little bit better at them. So we shall see how that goes.

Thursday:

  • 3 easy miles

Just another easy 3 miler followed by day two of my push up challenge! Haha like I said, I’m really bad at push ups. I can’t really go down all that far, but I still accomplished 4 push ups on my toes instead of on my knees, so I’ll take it!

Friday:

  • rest day

Luke and I had a pretty busy day on Friday! We had errands to run, groceries to buy, and then we made a jar of tomato sauce, 2 jars of strawberry jam, and a jar of blueberry jam. That was a lot of fun. You can read more about that here, if you’re interested! πŸ™‚

Saturday:

  • 8 miles
  • 30 minutes of yoga

Longer run #1 done for the weekend!!! Since I’m going to be running back to back half’s I figure that means I need to do at least a few back to back long-ish runs. So that was my plan for this weekend. πŸ™‚

Saturday’s long run was relatively uneventful. It wasn’t great but it wasn’t terrible. I was treated to a really pretty sunrise though, so that was nice. πŸ™‚ Afterwards I spent a good majority of the day resting, re-hydrating, and mentally preparing to go again on Sunday. I don’t think I’ve ever run the day after a long run before, so this is a brand new experience for me.

Sunday:

  • 5 miles

Well, mission accomplished!! I followed yesterday’s long run with a medium long run today and I didn’t die! πŸ˜‰ Haha my legs were kinda tired, but other than that I felt pretty great! During the first mile-ish I was viciously assaulted with lots of love by a black lab who snuck out of the door while his owner was walking outside. I didn’t see it but all of a sudden I heard the unmistakable sound of a dog running at full speed right at me, so I turned to look, saw him coming, and had time to say “oh shit,” before he was right on me. Luckily he was just friendly and wanted love. But had he not been that could have ended badly for me. I had very little time to react before he got to me. Haha he was a very speedy boy. But his owner ran after him and apologized and since nothing bad happened I told him it was all good and that I love dogs. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like to stop during my runs to pet dogs, haha this one just kinda scared me at first!

Anyway, after my run I watered the garden, fed the chickens and cleaned up around their coop, and then did a few more chores around the house. After that I was pretty tired and spent most of the day focusing on re-hydrating and resting. Luckily tomorrow is a rest day. I’m really looking forward to that haha.

Total Weekly Mileage: 22Β 

Starting to move onward and upward! So far my half marathon training is going really well and I hope that continues! I’m currently feeling very positive about training and my upcoming half’s!! πŸ™‚ Oh and I’ve also been doing a pretty good job of keeping up with this push up challenge so far! I can’t actually go down very far yet, but I’ve been doing them all on my toes and that’s a total win for me! Pretty stoked about that haha.

Weekly Recap: May 14th-20th, 2018

Oh man! This week was HARD! I feel like I spent the whole week being hot, sore, and tired haha. Still though, I feel like I got a lot done! Did some strength work, cross trained, and got a lot of work done in the garden. And did a decent amount of running too haha! Didn’t do quite as much as I wanted to, but it was still more than last week, so at least I’m slowly creeping my mileage up and am headed in the right direction!

Monday:

  • 4 miles
  • 45 minutes of strength work
  • 1 hour working in the garden

I got shit done on Monday!! My run went well, killed my strength workout, and got a bunch done in the garden! It was hot and gross out though haha, so I was pretty stoked that I got so much outside stuff done. πŸ™‚

Tuesday:Β 

  • stationary bike

I ended up sleeping in hardcore on Tuesday. I had a rough night and had trouble falling asleep until crazy late the night before. So since I got up late I didn’t run on Tuesday. I was sore, tired, and didn’t want to run after the sun had been up for a while and it was hot and gross out. So I ended up spending some time on the stationary bike instead.

Wednesday:Β 

  • 4 miles

It was really muggy and gross out on Wednesday. That was no fun… Still did 4 miles though!

Thursday:Β 

  • 3.33 miles
  • 30 minutes of weeding in the garden.
  • 15 minutes of Pilates

Holy cow I was really tired on Thursday! My goal was 5 miles, but honestly being tired wasn’t why I didn’t hit my goal, the problem was my stomach. Sometimes it gets really upset or just feels gross in hot weather. And it sure didn’t feel great on Thursday. But I still got a little bit accomplished so I’m happy about that! After my run I spent some time in the garden. Mostly weeding. Then I did a little bit of Pilates later in the afternoon.

Friday:

  • rest day

Luke and I spent a ridiculous amount of time at Sprint getting a new phone plan and upgrading our phones from our old iphone 6’s to iphone 8’s. Even though that took forever it was totally worth it! We had the 6’s for almost 4 years and the batteries in both of them were starting to go bad. So it’s nice having a phone that doesn’t die so fast haha.Β  Also made a fresh batch of bone broth. Yummy!! πŸ™‚

Saturday:

  • 8 miles
  • 2 miles

Things got a little bit interesting on Saturday!Β I had planned on doing 10 miles for my long run this week, and I mean, I did it, collectively haha.

So on Saturday morning it when I set out to do my run it was kinda thunderstorming. It wasn’t too bad, but I did see a few flashes of lightning right above my head. That was probably a little bit dangerous. πŸ˜‰ It had though, once I got to about mile 5, but once I had made it to mile 7 another storm front was moving in. I could see it/feel it coming in and it didn’t look to good. Plus the wind was really starting to pick up and was knocking over a bunch of tree branches, so I figured I needed to head back home and wait the storm out.

So that’s what I ended up doing. I showered, at lunch, took a nap, and then later in the afternoon when it was super hot and humid out I got those last two miles done. So at least I got 10 miles in. πŸ™‚

Sunday:

  • rest day

On Saturday night Luke, my brother-in-law, his girlfriend, and me went out. First we went to a pool hall and while the boys played, we just sat and talked. And then once they were done there we went to a bowling ally. I drank a little more than I usually would haha. I didn’t do anything crazy or anything, but I did wake up not feeling so great. πŸ˜‰ It’s all good though. We had fun. πŸ™‚

Total Weekly Mileage: 21.44

I was aiming for more like 25 miles, but still, not bad! I’m happy with what I got done this week. πŸ™‚

Weekly Recap: March 12th-18th, 2018

I’ve been back home for a two weeks now, the 5k that my dad andΒ  I did together was a success, and now I’m pretty much back to scheduled programming. I’m training for my next 5k in May, making plans for my garden, farming chickens, and handling 3 border collies. So you know, same old same old. πŸ™‚

Monday:

  • Rest Day

I usually try to take my rest days on Sunday, but since the Whiskey run was on Sunday I just moved that to Monday. So Monday was pretty uneventful, but my spiffy new Zensah compression sleeves got here, so there’s that. πŸ™‚

Tuesday:

  • Easy 2 miles
  • 15 minutes of strength work

Nothing exciting or fancy on Tuesday. Just doing thing that need to be done.

Wednesday:Β 

  • 10 minute warm up on the stationary bike
  • 4 miles

Running is hard…

Seriously did not want to do this run on Wednesday, but I got out there and muddled through it. Barely haha. But I did it and that’s all that matters, right?

Thursday:

  • Rest Day

Nope nope nope nope nope nope nope.

I woke up feeling like shit on Thursday. I was crazy sore, tired, and just gross feeling all around, even though I really hadn’t done anything all week to warrant feeling that way. So I skipped my run and opted to walk the dogs and do some yoga instead. I’m still not entirely sure if I should have just muddled through another run or not. But I mostly think my body was trying to tell me something and that I might have avoided an illness or injury by opting out of Thursday’s run. Either way though, it didn’t get done.

But on the bright side, my Honey Stinger order came on Thursday and I got to try out one of the new Almond butter/dark chocolate snack bars! They. Are. Amazing!! πŸ™‚

Friday:

  • Walked around the dog park

Well, and spent the whole day running around like crazy trying to get some stuff done haha! Luke’s Friday’s off (he gets a Friday off of work every other week), tend to be like that though. The day started off super rainy and chilly so we weren’t actually sure if we were gonna be able to get the dogs to the park, which was something we desperately wanted to do! So we ended up going to several stores in the mall, and the to Scheels looking for new everyday shoes for Luke and running tights for me. Luke and I are kind of die hard Nike people haha, but we’ve both been a bit disappointed by them lately. They’ve seemed to have done away with Nike Shox (Luke loves them for some reason. I think they’re super uncomfortable and not at all sad to see them go haha). Eventually he did find another pair of Nike’s that he likes though. My problem is the seem to have done away with my favorite kind of running tights. I’ve been looking everywhere for them or something similar for going on 2 years now, but nope, it’s looking like they’ve done away with them as well. Sad face… After being super disappointed at several stores, Luke told me that maybe I should try something new, so I ended up ordering a pair of Oiselle pocket jogger capris. This is the first Oiselle item I’ve ever purchased, so I’m pretty excited for them to get here and see what they’re all about. Plus I’ve always said running gear never has enough pockets, so these capris should solve that issue for me! So. Many. Pockets!!! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Anyway, after our shopping adventures it had gotten a lot nicer outside and the rain had mostly dissipated, so we took the dogs to the park, did some errands, then had my brother-in-law, his girlfriend, and her 2 kids over for dinner. Haha it was a very busy/eventful day.

 

 

 

Saturday:

  • 30 minutes of yoga

Oh man, my stomach was not happy with me on Saturday. I’m not entirely sure what that was all about, but it probably had something to do with the fact that I have not been eating very well lately. Obviously I need to work on that. So I kept it super easy and did 30 minutes of restorative yoga on Saturday. That ended up feeling really nice. πŸ™‚

Sunday:

  • 20 minutes on the stationary bike

Ugh, Lily and Finn kept Luke and I up all freaking night…That was a whole thing. I had planned on getting in a few miles at the very least today, but after last night’s fiasco that wasn’t going to happen. I always read/hear that after a shitty night of sleep you should go run because it’ll make you feel better, but try telling that to tired, cranky Ashley. Nope, not worth it in her opinion.

So, dyed my hair, cleaned the house, and spent a little bit of time on the stationary bike instead.

So yeah. This was a weird week. Sometimes running kinda gets in the way of life but this week life kinda got in the way of running. It happens and I’m not too worried about it. I have a feeling that next week will be better. πŸ™‚

Weekly Recap March 5th-11th, 2018

I had a lot of fun in Colorado and you definitely can’t beat the views there, but it’s nice to be back home and running the streets that I know like the back of my hand! Plus it’s much more comfortable being back at the elevation that I’m used to haha. Longmont may only be at around 5,000 feet above sea level, which is probably nothing for some people, but I live 1,000 feet above sea level, so that’s a pretty big difference for me! Oh and sleeping in my own bed is also really nice! I do miss waking up to views like these though…

Anyway, lets recap this week, shall we? πŸ™‚

Monday:Β 

  • 2 easy miles
  • 10 minutes of strength work

My 5k training plan for Running With The Cows started on Monday! So I kicked things off with 2 easy miles because I’m doing a beginner’s plan haha. That seemed like a smarter decision since I’m coming back from about 2 weeks off after breaking my toe and just a not so great winter of running. It’s all good though! I’m thinking this is actually going to end up being really good for me! Anyway, followed my easy run with 10 minutes of strenght work. Mostly because I kinda didn’t want to do it, but also because I had another 5k that I planned on doing with my dad on Sunday so I didn’t want to do anything too crazy that would make me sore for that. Not like a strength session on Monday was likely to still have me feeling sore by Sunday, but still. πŸ˜‰

Tuesday:

  • Rest Day
  • 15 minutes of yoga

I like beginner’s training plans because they include a lot of rest. πŸ˜‰ Actually, this is the first actual 5k training plan that I’ve ever done, so I don’t really know if that’s true or not. But I’m gonna go ahead and assume it is. I actually thought about doing another easy mile or two on Tuesday because “I’m definitely at least an intermediate runner” and “miles matter” and “I don’t need 3 rest days in a week”. All of which are probably fair points. But I woke up feeling really tired and still a little run down. Probably from the traveling to, staying in, and then traveling back from Colorado. Let me tell ya, that 10 hour car ride sucks! And my dad, brother, and I managed to make the trip there and back a lot longer than it should have been haha. We all have fun together though.

On Tuesday I also started taking a magnesium supplement. I’ve been reading a lot about it and how is helps support something like 300 different processes in the body, and is supposed to be good for anxiety and teeth health (two things I could use all the help I can get for haha), and I figured since most people are deficient in magnesium I might as well try it out and see if I feel any different because of it.

Wednesday:Β 

  • 2 easy miles

Holy cow! According to my Garmin, I got a lot more deep sleep the night before than I usually do! I’m not sure it that was a fluke or because of the magnesium, but I’m definitely interested in finding out! After I took the magnesium on Tuesday night I started to feel really calm and kinda tired after about 5 ish minutes. So I suppose there’s a good possibility that it really did make a difference in my sleep. I’m wondering if anything else will start to feel different as I continue to take it.

Anyway, Wednesday’s run was less than steller. I got chased by a dog again. I’ve actually been chased by this dog several times before. His owner always has him tied out in his front yard and the dog breaks off all the time. It’s really obnoxious and the dog tends to act pretty aggressively. But can’t really do anything about that…

Thursday:Β 

  • 1 hour on the stationary bike

Cross training! Yay! Hahaha not really. Cross training is boring. The stationary bike is boring. Being on it for an hour is a special kind of torturer for me. But watching Green Day things makes it a little bit better.

Friday:

  • 3 Miles

Whew man, this run was so. Freaking. Hard. Jeez Louise… Can we just talk about how difficult running is the week before your period? Because it really is. I was so tired. I felt like my legs were made of lead and that I was running through a foot of mud. It was pretty awful and tookΒ forever.Β But on the bright side, I found a rubber duck dressed as a gnome on this run. So obviously that made up for everything. πŸ™‚

Saturday:

  • Rest Day

I felt a little better on Saturday. Less tired, but still bleh. I could have definitely run on Saturday. Maybe even should have run on Saturday. But I wanted to feel rested and have my legs feel good for the Whiskey run on Sunday that my dad and I did, so I focused on that instead.

But sticking with the rubber duck theme, yesterday I bought some new compression sleeves yesterday! And the shipped out to me on Saturday and should be here by Monday. I can’t wait for them to get here! They’re so spiffy! Plus I love Zensah’s compression sleeves! They’re pretty great! πŸ™‚

Sunday:

  • Whiskey Run 5k with my dad

Oh man this was so much fun!! We did really well, had lots of fun, got our shot of Whiskey at the end, and had a great breakfast afterwards! Haha that’s all I’ve got about that for now though. I’m gonna try to have a full race recap up at some point tomorrow. Haha there were a few reasons why both of us could have had a really bad day, but like I said, it went really well for both of us! πŸ™‚

Total Weekly Mileage: 10.10

Haha I’ve got a lot of work to do in the weekly mileage department. But I did spend two weeks doing nothing because of my probably broken to, and 10.10 miles is a whole lot better than that! So I’ll gladly take it!
