Weekly Recap: July 9th-15th, 2018

Woohoo!! I was back at it this week! ๐Ÿ™‚

Well, kinda haha. I didn’t get as much done as I probably should have, but I still ran, and did a little bit of strength training, and stretching, and that’s much better than nothing!

And Good thing too! Because this week was the last week before our little family trip to Branson, Mo. I’m not sure how much running I’m going to be able to get done while we’re there. Luckily we won’t be gone for long. We’re leaving tomorrow morning and will be driving back home by Friday, so it’s nothing too crazy.

Monday:

  • 4 treadmill miles
  • 13 minutes of yoga

Kicked off the week with 4 miles on the treadmill! We had anther air quality alert from Sunday-Monday evening, so I figured it was best to do my run indoors. Had a little fun with this run and did kind of a ladder workout. Increased my pace incrementallyย  going up and then back down. It was actually a lot of fun!

Is it just me, or has this summer been particularly brutal?!? We’ve been getting heat and air quality warning like crazy here in Kansas. Hopefully the next 3 months wont end up as more of the same…

Tuesday:

  • 3 more treadmill miles
  • 15 minutes of strength work

Tuesday brought another heat and air quality advisory with it. So another treadmill run was had. Haha Luckily Luke and I have been going for short little walks in the evening. Obviously that’s not gonna be the same as the pounding I’d do while running on the asphalt, but at least I’m still spending a little bit of time out on the roads. Photo is from the night before on one of our walks, because running on the treadmill doesn’t exactly come with very exciting views. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Wednesday:ย 

  • 15 minutes of pilates
  • 10 minutes of stretching

The heat warning continues!! I didn’t think it was safe for me to run outside and Iย reallyย didn’t want to get on the treadmill again, so no run for me on Wednesday. Did a few other things in place of running though, so there’s that!

Haha so, since it’s been so hot out I’ve been having to keep ice in the chicken coop to keep them cool! They do not like being so hot, so it’s been kinda hard on them. But they’re doing ok. Every couple of hours I have to run out there, change their water, and give them more ice.

Thursday:ย 

  • 3.33 treadmill miles

More time on the treadmill. Fun! ๐Ÿ˜‰ I just kinda hopped on with the intent to see just how long I could stay on. Apparently the answer was 3.33 miles. About then I was absolutely dying of boredom. Haha but at least it was something! Thursday night Luke and I went on yet anther little walk around the neighborhood. It was hot, humid, and gross, but still kinda nice. At least the sunset was pretty. ๐Ÿ™‚

Friday:

  • Did lots of work in the garden

So, yet another day without a run, but I was still pretty busy!! I spent quite a bit of time weed eating in and around the garden, pulling weeds, watering the plants, pruning back my tomatoes a little bit, and then picking and washing tomatoes and a few zucchini. Oh and did I mention it was another crazy hot day? Haha because of course it was! We are in desperate need of some rain and a break from all of this heat…

Saturday:

  • 3 miles

Oh hey! I ran outside on Saturday!! It was the first day in like, 3 weeks I think, that we haven’t had a air or heat warning and the first day in forever where the high was only 85. Crazy stuff, man! So obviously I had to get out while the weather was a little more decent! Unfortunately it was still pretty humid and I only ended up making it 3 miles before I felt like death and had to quit. Haha the humidity and heat just saps everything out of me…But I ran outside and I was still very happy about that! Even if it wasn’t a good run.

And then FINALLY, Saturday afternoon we had a little thunderstorm roll through! It rained for a little over an hour and then stayed cloudy for pretty much the rest of the day which was great! Weย reallyย needed the rain and a little break from the sun. It was fantastic!! But unfortunately it’s not looking like we’ve got much of a chance of that happening again anytime soon. There’s supposedly a few chances for more rain next week, but they’re really low; 30 and 40%. But hopefully that will change and we’ll get more rain. It’s been terribly dry and hot here and we need as much rain as we can get! Even if it does make the air more humid. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Sunday:

  • 2 miles

On Sunday my mother-in-law, her two kids (haha obviously Luke is her kid, and so is my brother-in-law. And obviously they are my brother and sister in law as well, but really I just consider them to be more of my brother and sister. Haha it’s just that our family, especially Luke’s side, is really big and gets kinda confusing and I don’t want to have to go over all of that on here. That is a lot of long stories that are not mine to tell. So, for all intents and purposes, this is what I’m going with hahaha), and her boyfriend stopped here on their way from Minnesota, which is where they live now, to Branson, MO. They didn’t stay long, they just wanted to take a little pit stop on their way there, and we’re gonna be there on Monday anyway, so it’s not like we’re not going to see each other again for a while. So they just kinda hung out for an hour or so and then hit the road again.

And once they left I did too! But on foot. ๐Ÿ˜‰ It was yet another super hot, super humid day, but I wanted to run outside again, so I did 2 easy miles. Well, they were slow anyway. Haha they sure didn’t feel easy! But I know it was good for me. Doing tough summer runs like that is only going to make fall running (and hopefully training for and then doing those two half marathons is two days) that much more enjoyable!

Total weekly mileage: 15.36ย 

Meh, that’s not that great. But honestly it’s a lot better than I thought I was gonna do, so I’ll take it!

Anyway, I spent a lot of time yesterday packing for our family trip and today I’ve finished that up, gotten all of the animals situated, and took care of everything in the garden that I had wanted to do before we leave. So we should be good to go! Tomorrow morning we’re going to drop the dogs off at the kennel, which is going to be terrible and heart-wrenching and I’m not looking forward to it. Every other time we’ve ever gone anywhere we’ve either been able to bring the dogs with us (can’t do that this time. The owners of the cabins we’re staying in don’t allow pets), they’ve stayed with my mom and dad or Luke’s dad, or someone has been able to stay at home with them. But this time we couldn’t do any of that. So a kennel it is! And my family owned a kennel, I grew up working in it, so I know they’re gonna be fine. It’s just that they’re gonna be so sad and confused because they’ve never been to one before and they’ve never been left alone with people they don’t know (except for Dean who got neutered and had to stay at the vet over night, but that was the only time). They’re probably going to whine, cry, be pitiful, and not eat the whole time they’re there and like, think we’ve abandoned them or something. And that just makes me sad haha.

Obviously it works for some dogs. Sure, they miss their owners, but they’re friendly, like other dogs and people, and think they’re just on some fun adventure. Like I said, I worked in a kennel, I’ve known many, many,ย many,ย dogs like that. I’ve also known dogs like mine who don’t particularly like other dogs or people (it’s just a border collie thing. They have their family and they don’t care about anything else) and don’t understand why they’d ever get left behind. Dogs like that tend to be a pain in the ass at a kennel and don’t eat. I hope they don’t cause too much trouble. My dogs don’t listen to people the don’t know/like, so that could be a problem…but I just kinda foresee them being sad and pathetic the whole time they’re there and that just kinda makes me sad haha.

Like with our Florida trip last year, I’ll probably be posting our adventures here everyday. Not sure how that’s all gonna go down since Luke and I are really tight on cash right now and after gas to get there and back we’ll only have about $200 while we’re there.ย  So we probably won’t be doing much…

Weekly Recap: June 25th-July 1st, 2018

This week I’ve been insanely grateful for my new treadmill! It’s been another hot one here in Kansas; with a few thunderstorms, high humidity, and air quality warnings. So definitely not ideal running weather haha. I did manage to get out and do some outdoor running, but most of it was done on the treadmill this week. But with heat indexes around 105 degrees, there was no way I was going to be able to do much outside. So thank goodness for my treadmill! Because of it I was still able to get my running done this week! ๐Ÿ™‚

This was just from Tuesday! Both alerts ended up getting extended!

Monday:ย 

  • 3 miles

It was actually relatively cool on Monday! I wasn’t about to waste that, so I hit the road that morning. We had some thunderstorms come through and even more that were nearby and that left the temperatures in the high 60’s in the morning. Not bad for late June!! The only downside was that those storms made it pretty darn humid! But I mean, it is summertime in the Midwest. It’s ALWAYS humid this time of year haha.

Tuesday:ย 

  • 2 miles
  • 30 minutes strength training
  • 10 minutes stretching

71 degrees + 90% humidity = the poor man’s altitude training. Haha seriously! Summer running is no freaking joke and it actually does help your body create more red blood cells, similar to the way altitude training does! And knowing this, I decided to take this run outside as well. I kinda didn’t want to haha, but I figured it was so short there was really no reason for me not to. I was completely drenched in sweat by the time I was done though!!

Followed up my run with some strength training. My current goal is to get stronger and hopefully a little more injury resistant since I’m going to be running two half marathons in two days this November, so I’ve been fitting in a couple of strength sessions every week. Haha I can already see the difference in my tiny little biceps! Now that being said, my heals have been kinda hurting me. I know exactly why too, like, two weeks ago I think, I ran too far in a pair of shoes that were too worn out…oops. I had a similar problem when I had first started running by wearing a pair of shoes that were too supportive for my feet. So I’ve been working on getting my feet back to feeling well. Lots of calf and foot stretching, along with ice, and rolling my feet with one of those little massage ball things. Last time I had this issue it lasted a while. Hopefully that wont be the case this time, but we shall see.

Wednesday:

  • 7 treadmill miles
  • 10 minutes stretching

Holy cow! I feel like this run was more exhausting on the treadmill that it would have been on the road! My goal was actually 8 miles but once I got to 7 I just couldn’t spend another minute on my treadmill. I like it, it’s a really nice treadmill, and I’m extremely grateful to have it because getting in 7 miles on Wednesday probably wouldn’t have happened. All day I was getting air quality alerts and excessive heat warning on my phone haha. But jeez louise running on the treadmill is hard! Like, I’m actually going slower, but it feels harder. I’m just awkward and not good at running on treadmills, I guess. I also felt kinda dizzy getting off the treadmill. Probably because I was moving, but not really moving, ya feel me? Oh and treadmill running is hopelessly boring. Watching Hulu helped, but still. Haha anyway, this was the longest run I’ve ever done on a treadmill and I was very glad to be done with it!

Also, my latest Honey Stinger order came on Wednesday!! Since training for my half marathons on November 10th and 11th (yup, two halfโ€™s in two days. Thatโ€™s slightly terrifying and a potentially bad decision on my part! I still haven’t gotten over that yet.ย ๐Ÿคฃ) officially starts on July 22nd, so I figured now would be a good time to top off my Honey Stinger supply!! The sick new hat and Hive stickers were an added bonus that were just too good to pass up! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿ˜„ย I’ve already put on of the stickers on my laptop. Now I just need to figure out what I want to do with the other 4 haha.

Thursday:

  • 2 miles

The excessive heat warning continues with no end in sight… So on Thursday my run was done on the treadmill again. It was slow and unpleasant, but at least it got done. ๐Ÿ™‚

Friday:

  • Rest Day
  • 40 minutes stretching

And a much needed one too! This heat just wears me out!! I did some stretching though and felt pretty good after that! ๐Ÿ˜„

Saturday:

  • 3.5 morning miles
  • 2 afternoon miles

Saturday was yet another hot and humid day. Iย really didn’t want to run on the treadmill that morning though, so I decided to just take my run outside and see how far I could go until I felt like I was going to die. Apparently 3.5 miles was my limit haha. It felt good to get outside and run on the road though! ๐Ÿ™‚ Then a little later that afternoon I figured why not got for a total of 5 miles for the day and ended up running 2 miles on the treadmill, which obviously got me to 5.5 miles for the day. ๐Ÿ™‚

Sunday:ย 

  • Rest Day

Yesterday I was kinda thinking that I could run a mile or two to get my weekly mileage up over 20, but I got a little bit wine drunk last night and didn’t really feel like running today. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย Not like that’s a big deal or anything. Sunday’s are usually a rest day for me anyway, and since half marathon training starts later this month I might as well start getting into the habit of doing certain things on certain days. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So I didn’t run today, but I did do some walking. Last night in my slightly drunken state (haha I drank almost 2 bottles of wine, slightly may be a bit of an understatement. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) I decided that I was going to start playing Pokemon Go again. So at midnight, slightly drunk, and all alone (because Luke was too busy playing Call Of Duty with his dad and brother), I walked like, 2 blocks to the civics center to hit a few Pokestops. And since I did that I decided I really wanted to start playing Pokemon Go again, so that’s what I’ve done today. Walked dogs and played Pokemon Go haha. It’s been kinda fun though. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Total Weekly Mileage: 19.55ย 

Not bad considering the terrible weather!! This kinda stuff usually puts a damper on my running, but thanks to my treadmill I’ve still been able to get some miles in! ๐Ÿ™‚ Hopefully the weather will be a little better next week, but as of right now it doesn’t look like this heat is going to be letting up…

But anyway, happy first day of July!! I hope everyone has a safe and fun 4th of July!! We’ve currently got a few things planned so that should be exciting!

Treadmill Running

I started out my running journey almost 5 years ago on a treadmill in my old apartment complexes fitness center, but once I started running on the paved trail that was near by, I ditched the treadmill and never looked back. In that time I’ve forgotten a little something about myself; I’m super duper awkward on treadmills!

So just going back a little bit, last weekend Luke and I went to Illinois for one of his brother’s high school graduation party. While we were there we picked up my sister’s old treadmill from her boyfriend’s mom’s house. My sister (actually, both of my sister’s, my brother, and both of my parents) live in Colorado now. It would have been more expensive for her to rent a truck and drive all the way to Illinois just to get it, and since she knew Luke just recently bought a new truck, she told me that we could take it. And that, my friends, is how I ended up getting a $600 treadmill for free. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Originally I wasn’t going to take the treadmill. “I’m a road runner!” I told myself, “I pride myself in running in ALL OF THE WEATHER CONDITIONS!” And that is true, but in the summer months I always end up runningย a lot less and basically not doing any kind of speed work, because I do not do well in the heat. It absolutely drains me and my running kinda suffers because of it. So after thinking about that for a while, I figured why not take the treadmill? I could probably utilize it in a way to supplement my outdoor running and actually do some speed work in the summer! So at this point I’m pretty stoked to have it. Even though it’s kinda huge and taking up a lot of room in my living room haha.

Anyway, back to my original point. I run weird on treadmills. And I’ve kinda forgotten about that little fact until now. Once I had started running on that trail back in the apartment days I realized how natural treadmill running felt to me. I also realized how quickly I tore shoes up while running on a treadmill. Once I started running on asphalt my shoes started lasting me a lot longer. Probably because running on a revolving belt is just naturally going to wear them out faster, but also because my running gait is just super awkward while moving on said revolving belt and I’ve never been able to get into a good rhythm on one. And honestly I probably never will.

So I’ve only run twice since Sunday when we brought this thing home. Both runs were on the treadmill and both runs felt super weird. Now, I know I’m slow, but a little simple math told me that my Garmin wasn’t reading correctly with that first run on Monday and that I was going somewhere around a 13:30 pace and not a 15 minute per mile pace. Haha that was a huge relief! Because that first run felt HARD! So I’m not actually sure about the distance on this run. I’m not all that worried about it though, I figured out how to calibrate my watch to the treadmill and it was pretty close to what the treadmill was reading on Tuesday. Still not sure how accurate the treadmill is, but I’m just gonna roll with it haha.

First treadmill run in a very long time on Monday!

You might notice in the photo above that I’m not wearing any shoes. Haha remember how I said I tear shoes up while running on the treadmill? Yeah, I don’t want to be doing that right now. You see, I’m down to one pair of running shoes (I just had to retire my current pair of Nike Free’s. It was a sad day), my Nike Pegasus and they’re getting close to being halfway through their running life with me. I can usually get about 300 ish miles out of a pair of shoes before they have to retire to my “everyday” shoes, and then I can usually wear them for about another year before I have to get rid of them. It’s a good system for me. ๐Ÿ™‚ But anyway, since I’m down to one pair of running shoes and currently not able to spend $100 to get a new pair (that whole trip to Illinois, our up coming family vacation that Luke’s mom has been planning, and having to pay bills, buy food, and other adult stuff like that is really slowing the whole getting new running shoes thing down). So in order to preserve my current pair of shoes I’ve done both of my runs this week in my socks!!

I actually spent a lot of time thinking about whether or not I should join ko-fi, because I didn’t want anyone to think I was like, begging for money or anything. And I’m totally not! But you know, I do work pretty hard on this blog and my other social media accounts. I put myself out there and share my story in some pretty up close and personal ways. So anyway, in order to preserve the life of my remaining pair of running shoes, I’ve done both of my runs this week in just my socks. I figured it wouldn’t be that big of a deal though. As kids my sisters and I would run around the farm barefoot all the time. We’d walk around corn fields, cow pastures, the woods, our gravel driveway, and even ride our bikes all sans shoes, and it was great!! And it’s not like I wear shoes all the time anyway. Nowadays I always walk around my house in just socks. I ride my stationary bike barefoot, tend to my garden barefoot or in flip flops or rubber boots (so, shoes that basically have no support whatsoever). I’ve even played tennis and helped Luke practice for softball either barefoot or in socks. Haha we’ve actually discoverd that I pitch better without shoes on! Although that’s probably just a weird coincidence, but now whenever we got out to the softball fields and there’s no home plate out we just use my shoes because I’m a-ok with not wearing them haha.

I’ve also got an affinity for minimalist shoes. Hence why I love Nike Free’s so much. Don’t get me wrong, I love myย Pegasus. They’re a great training shoe and a good way for me to switch things up a little bit, but I wont do races in them haha. Compared to the Free’s they just feel heavy to me. I don’t even like wearing them on long runs, but I do because I know it’s good for me. But anyway, since I’m quite often barefoot, or wearing socks or minimalist shoes, I figured my feet, ankles, and legs would be strong enough to do my treadmill running in just my socks. But I think I might have overdone it a bit yesterday. I ran 4 miles on the treadmill, very awkwardly because like I said, treadmill running is weird and hard, in just my socks. I’m not hurt or injured or anything, but my calves are just super tight today! My guess is from running super duper awkwardly on the treadmill two days in a row and now wearing shoes probably didn’t help.

Haha yesterday I actually spent those 4 miles watching part of a full Green Day concert on YouTube. I have no idea how people can go to a concert and record the whole thing! I’m too busy singing and dancing to even consider taking decent pictures, let along record a video! But I am incredibly grateful to the people who do! Haha yesterday’s 4 miles flew by thanks to whoever recorded this concert! I find treadmill running to be incredibly boring, so I never thought I’d say treadmill miles just flew by! So that was really nice!! But like I said, I woke up with super tight calves today, so I figured I needed to rest them and stretch them, so that’s been my goal for today.

I actually wanted to run outside today. The weather has been a little less hot thanks to some rain we have in the forecast, so it would have been nice to take it outside today. But my tight calves are making my heels hurt a little bit. I’ve dealt with plantarย fasciitis before (and ironically I got it from running in a pair of shoes that were waaay to supportive for my feet. I have very high arches and I’ve found the less support a shoe has, the better!) and I definitely didn’t want to go through all of that again, so I figured taking the day off and getting my calves to loosen up a bit was obviously the better option. So I spent about 30 minutes on my yoga mat doing just that. I still felt a little tight, but a lot better after that!

So I’m hoping tomorrow they feel even better and I’ll be able to run on them. The weather forecast is saying that it’s supposed to be in the 60’s and cloudy with a chance of rain, so I’d like to run in that before it starts getting hot and gross again!! But once it does, at least I’ll have the treadmill as an option. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve also got another dentist appointment tomorrow to get my permanent crowns put on. So hopefully that all goes well. But that is all I’ve got for now, so happy hump day everyone!

Weekly Recap: June 11th-17th, 2018

Oh man, it’s been hot hot HOT this week!! Our area has been under a heat advisory pretty much all week and it’s kinda sucked. Mostly just because I hate the heat in general, but also because our air conditioner wasn’t rated properly for this house and it just can’t keep up. It’s set at 72 degrees, but on days were the high is around 85-90 degrees the house heats up to a not so great 77 degrees and it pretty much stays that way until the sun goes down. It’s rough haha. So I guess it shouldn’t be too surprising that I haven’t done as much running as I would have liked to this week. The weather’s just been too gross! Even waking up at 5 am hasn’t helped… Oh well. While we were in Illinois for a graduation party we picked up my sisters old treadmill, so I’m hoping now I’ll acutally be able to do the amount of running that I’ve set out to do this summer.

Monday:ย 

  • 30 minutes of strength training

Nope nope nope nope nope. It was too hot, too humid, and the air quality wasn’t too great on Monday. So no run for me. But I did a nice little strength session, so at least there’s that. ๐Ÿ™‚

Tuesday:ย 

  • 7.18 miles

We had some thunderstorms come through late Monday night/early on Tuesday, so it was pretty humid out. But there was a nice bit of cloud cover which did help a little bit once the sun came out. Still woke up at 5 am to beat the heat though! Or at least beat what I could of it! Haha it still wasn’t too pleasant out.

Wednesday:ย 

  • 20 minutes on the stationary bike

The rest of our new chicks came on Wednesday! So instead of running I spent 20 minutes on the stationary bike, because I wanted to be able to keep an eye on the new babies and make sure they weren’t getting bullied by the bigger chicks we have. Luckily they all seem to have adjusted well and the older chicks don’t mind the newer ones at all! ๐Ÿ™‚

Thursday:

  • 2 miles
  • 25 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 20 minutes of yoga

I wanted to run a little more on Thursday but it was just too freaking hot! Haha I know that’s pretty much the theme of this whole post at this point. But I don’t do well in the heat. I just don’t. So I tried, but nope haha. After my 2 miles I went in and spent some time on the stationary bike and then did some yoga later that afternoon.

Friday:

  • 4.17 miles
  • Bathed Dean and Finn

Trust me, bathing both Dean and Finn totally counts as a workout haha. They’ll gladly jump into muddy lakes or wallow in the nastiest puddles. But come at them with clean water and soap and you’d swear you were torturing them. Luckily I didn’t have to bathe Lily too, but honestly she’s a lot easier. She hates it too, but will get in the bathtub if you tell her to and will stand there until you tell her to get out.

Anyway, I was bound and determined to do more than 3 miles on Friday. I took it nice and slow, stopped half way through for a drink, and managed to make it 4 miles. ๐Ÿ™‚ When I first started I felt really good and thought about going for 5, but by the time I was doing the last mile the sun was really starting to come up and making things a lot more hot and miserable. So I stopped. Haha but still met my goal of more than 3 miles, so I was happy with that. ๐Ÿ™‚

Once Luke got home from work on Friday we packed up the truck, loaded in the dogs, and drove to Illinois for one of his brother’s graduation party. Luckily after driving 20 hours to the Grand Canyon, 16 hours to Minnesota, and 11 hours to Colorado, the 5 hour drive to Illinois really isn’t so bad haha!

Saturday:ย 

We were pretty darn busy on Saturday!!

In the morning we took one of Luke’s brothers to do a little bit of target practice. That brother’s graduation part was that afternoon. That night we took Luke’s youngest brother to the park, and after that we picked up my sister’s old treadmill from her boyfriend’s mom’s house. It was busy, but it was fun!

Sunday:

We drove back home to Kansas today! Once we got home we set up the treadmill my sister let me have, and I’m definitely going to be using it tomorrow because it’s still fucking hot…

I’m definitely not a fan of treadmills, but this one is pretty darn nice!! Plus since we put it in the living room I’ll be able to watch TV while I use it. But it’s crazy hot and this is gonna help me get in some more running miles without dying!

More Chicks, My Thoughts On Summer Running, Yet Another Road Trip, and A Treadmill.

The last set of our new chicks got here this morning! And they were all alive this time!!

The post office called Luke at 6:30 this morning to let him know that they were there. That was pretty weird just because neither of us knew that the post office was open that early haha. But anyway, now we have all of our replacement chicks. I’m still super annoyed that were were soooo close to getting eggs, but then my neighbor’s dog killed my poor chickens, and now we’re back to square one. Oh well, at least the chicks are cute. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So, you can see that there’s a big size difference between the 2 day old chicks we got today and the 2 week old chicks. They grow FAST! But so far everyone seems to be assimilating well. The new chicks are eating, drinking, pooping, and moving around just fine. And the bigger chicks aren’t bullying them at all and don’t seem too bothered by the new additions to the brooder box, so that’s good! I was kinda worried that the bigger chicks might hurt the new babies but after keeping an eye on them all day, I think they’ll be fine.

So just for fun here’s a little size comparison of a 2 week old Rhode Island red and a 2 day old Rhode Island red.

 

 

 

 

I know those aren’t the best pictures ever, but you get the point. ๐Ÿ˜‰ They’re quite a bit bigger and that’s why I was worried, but like I said, so far it doesn’t seem to be an issue. ๐Ÿ™‚

So now we have 5 Rhode Island reds, 2 brahmas, and 1 barnevelder. So we’ve got a little more variety in our flock this time around. The Rhode Island reds are pretty much you’re standard brownish/red hen, but the brahmas and the barnevelder should be pretty neat looking once they’re fully matured! I’m pretty excited about that! ๐Ÿ™‚

They’re all going to have to be inside in the brooder box for several more weeks, but once we’re able to move them outside and into the coop we wont have to worry about Ozzy getting into our yard and bothering them anymore. Along with putting up the new fence between our yards, our neighbor also ran an electric fence all the way around his yard, and won’t let Ozzy outside unless he’s home, so he’s not going to be an issue anymore. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m still kinda pissed that we’re all the way back to square one though, and we wont be getting eggs until the winter now, but oh well. Can’t really do anything but move on at this point.

Alrighty then! Lets talk a little bit about running now, shall we? I mean, that is kinda the main focus of this blog after all. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Specifically I’d like to talk about my thoughts on summer running, which can basically be summed up in 3 short words;

Fuck. This. Shit.ย

Obviously I am not a fan haha. It’s been crazy hot for how early in the year it is. The past few days the heat index has been in the hundreds, which is pretty unusual for June. Usually that doesn’t come until July and August, so if it’s already this hot now, what exactly are those months going to be like?!? I have a feeling it’s not going to be a lot of fun…

So since it’s been so hot and gross out I’ve been kinda struggling to get my miles in. I really wanted to start building up my mileage over the summer, but jeez louis the heat just gets me every time! And since the weather’s been particular bad this year it’s just made things that much worse.ย  Bleh, I’m ready for fall!! Haha that being said, I am trying though! I got a pretty decent 7 mile run done yesterday! I felt pretty drained and tired the whole day afterwards, but the run itself wasn’t too bad. ๐Ÿ™‚

I didn’t get a run in today though. I woke up feeling kinda gross this morning. Probably from the 7 miles I ran in 85% humidity yesterday. Seriously, the heat and humidity do me in every single time haha. Plus the new chicks got here a lot earlier than I thought they would and I wanted to keep an eye on them all day. Just to make sure they were eating, drinking, and not getting bullied by the older chicks. The life of a chicken farmer, I suppose. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰ While no running was had today, I did spend a little bit of time on my stationary bike. So I was able to keep an eye on the chicks and get my legs moving a little bit. ๐Ÿ™‚

One of my sisters has kinda solved my warm weather running dilemma though, and it’s a good thing we have a truck now, because we have a few things to pick up from my parent’s old house in Illinois! Which actually works out well, because we’re driving there this weekend for one of Luke’s brother’s high school graduation party!

So on Friday after Luke get’s off of work we’re going to be packing up the truck, picking up one of Luke’s other brother’s who lives here in Kansas, and then we’ll be hitting the road and hopefully be making it into Illinois by 9 or 10 that night. I’m not sure if we’ll be stopping at their dad’s house first, or just going straight to my grandma’s though. Luke’s brother that lives here has had kind of a falling out with their dad (that was a whole long thing that I’m not going to get into) and is welcome at the party, but not to stay at their dad’s house, so we’ll be staying at my grandmas. Haha well, I’d be staying there anyway, because why wouldn’t I want to hang out with my grandma? She’s awesome!

This party is on Saturday but I’m not sure at what time, but at some point while we’re there we need to pick up my Grandpa Jim’s boat and my sister’s old treadmill. When my Grandpa Jim died my dad inherited his fishing boat, which was fine while my dad still lived in Illinois but now that he lives in an apartment in Colorado he has nowhere to keep it and they’re trying to clean out that house so they can sell it, so Luke and I are taking the boat. That actually works out quite nicely, because my dad wanted to keep the boat in the family since it was his dad’s and all, and Luke’s a big fisher but prefers to fish out of a boat, so he hasn’t done a lot of fishing since we moved to Kansas almost 6 years ago. So it’s a win-win for everyone! ๐Ÿ™‚

We’re also going to be picking up my sister’s old treadmill from her boyfriend’s mom’s house. She doesn’t have a truck and can’t afford to rent one to drive from Colorado to Illinois to pick it up so she bought a new one and offered me the old one. Originally I wasn’t going to take it because I pride myself on being an all-weather-runner and don’t particularly enjoy running on a treadmill but after thinking about it a little bit I realize it would probably be a really good idea! I’ll actually be able to do some decent speed work in the warmer months now! That’s usually something that falls to the wayside once it gets hot and I’m just focusing on surviving haha. Plus I wont have to worry about particularly hot and humid days anymore, if I start feeling too miserable outside I’ll be able to finish up my run on the treadmill! Haha I don’t plan on running on it too much. I still want to reap the benefits of hot weather training, but at least I’ll probably be able to start hitting my weekly mileage goals. Even if that means I have to double and do an easy outdoor run in the morning and then a little bit of a harder workout in the evening on the treadmill. I’m pretty excited about that! I’ve never really been able to do any kind of speed work or harder workouts in the summer before! And hopefully the harder work that I should be able to do on the treadmill will help make me for fit and ready for the 2 half marathons in 2 days that I’ll be doing in November!

Anyway, that’s just a little update for today! We’ve got all of our chicks, I hate summer running and I’m hardcore struggling with it right now, but hopefully getting that treadmill will make that a little easier!

Weekly Recap: April 16th-22nd, 2018

I was still sick for a good portion of this week, but I definitely started to feel better and was pretty much recovered from this illness by the end of the week which was awesome! And bonus, I was able to do pretty much all of the running I wanted to accomplish. It was mostly slow and kinda boring stuff and some of it got cut a little shorter than I wanted, but hey, it was a vast improvement over last week and I will gladly take that! ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday:

  • 3 easy miles

Marathon Monday. Wow! Still can’t get over Des Linden’s win at the Boston Marathon! That was just incredible!

So since I spent the whole morning watching the Elite coverage of the Boston Marathon, I didn’t end up running until around 12:30 that afternoon. That wasn’t a big deal, but it felt kinda weird haha. I like to get my running done and out of the way first thing in the morning that way I don’t have to worry about it throughout the day. Anyway, just did an uneventful 3 miles on Monday. After that I had to take care of all of the things I neglected to do since I spent so much time watching TV haha.

Tuesday:

  • 5 miles

I was still feeling kinda bleh on Tuesday and had originally only planned to do 2-3 miles because I sill wasn’t feeling great. But it seemed like the more I ran the better I felt, so I ended up doing 5 haha. It wasn’t exactly fun and I spent a lot of time coughing and wiping my nose, but I’m glad I did it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Wednesday:ย 

  • 3 miles with a couple strides thrown in for fun
  • 20 minutes of yoga/foam rolling

I was finally starting to feel better by Wednesday! Not at 100% but still, I was very happy with the improvement and it showed during my run! It was hard, but fun hard and not I’m still sick and feel like I’m dying, which I will gladly take! After my run I spent over 2 hours cleaning out our spare bedroom where the chickens had lived until Tuesday night when we finally moved them into the coop. That was an adventure in and of itself! Wednesday was a good day and you can read more about it here. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thursday:

  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 30 minutes of yoga

Cross training is a necessary evil as far as I’m concerned. I don’t particularly enjoy doing it, I usually find it to be boring, but I know it’s good for me. So I do it. Sometimes hahaha. But by Thursday I was feeling sooooo much better! Still probably not 100% better, I still had a cough, but for the most part I was feeling pretty good! ๐Ÿ™‚

Friday:

  • 2.5 miles

Friday was an interesting day. Started off with a run as usual. I warmed up with what was supposed to be a nice and easy mile, but my new favorite band finally released their new album the night before so obviously I had to listen to that while I ran. I new that was a bad idea but I did it anyway haha. New music makes me a happy camper. But it also makes me go out waaaay too fast during my warm up and then that tends to make the rest of the workout a huge suffer fest. Luckily it was a short on on Friday though haha. After my “warm up” I did some cadence drills (about a mile of ’em ๐Ÿ™‚ ) and then cooled down with a little more easy running. Like I said, it was kinda a huge suffer fest, but it was also pretty fun!

And just for some clarification; I’ve been joking about The Longshot being my new favorite band for a while now (if you know me then you know I’m the biggest Green Day fangirl in ALL THE LAND!). But the thing is, it’s literally just another side band that the front man for Green Day has come up with. So its pretty much just Green Day with a few different people. Haha I still thing it’s fucking great though and I absolutely love their album. Hence the going out too fast during my warm up on Friday. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyways, on Friday evening my brother-in-law, his girlfriend, and her two kids came over to our house to hang out. And so did one of my neighbor’s and her kid (the one who likes to come over and hang out with me). So for some reason all of the small children (they were 7, 4, and 3 years old) all flocked to me, fought for my attention, and over who got to sit in my lap. Small children terrify me. Haha so not sure why they all wanted to be my friend (well, except for my neighbor, like I said, she likes hanging out with me). So that went on for several hours and was exhausting. I passed out right away when I finally went to bed that night.

Saturday:

  • 5.58 miles

Saturday’s are usually my long run day. So the original plan was to do 8 miles. But between getting over an illness, going a little too hard during my workout on Friday, and then having 3 young children all over me the night before I was kinda worn out and just not feeling it. After about 2 miles I just started laughing at myself and was like “yeah, 8 miles definitely isn’t gonna happen today.” Then at about 3 miles I got chased to two little demon dogs that were running around unleashed in a non-fenced in front yard. Once the took off after me the followed my for a little bit, so I stopped and looked back to their house to see if their owner was out. She was, but she was just throwing her hands in the air, then covering her face, and I’m pretty sure she started crying… Like, I get that your dogs running off is a frustrating situation, but freaking out like that isn’t going to do anyone any good. Plus those little assholes were trying to bite at my ankles and I wasn’t about to try to catch them and bring them back to her. As far as I’m concerned that’s not my problem (and remember this is coming from the person who has caught and returned several dogs to their owners while out running). Ugh, I’ve grown to despise people who let their dogs run after people like that, then act like it’s the person who the dogs are chasing’s fault. Like, I’m on a public road. The law says that I can be here. And the law also says that your dogs can’t be out in public like that without a leash. Therefore, not my problem.

As someone who goes to great lengths to train her dogs not to do shit like that, and follow all the laws that pertain to dogs, I find it super frustrating when other people don’t. And then throw a fit whenever they let their dogs get into a potentially dangerous situation and are chasing/trying to bite a random passerby.

Anyway, I was in a standoff with those two dogs for several minutes, and had to resort to growling at them to keep them from coming close enough to bite me (usually a firm “no!” does the trick, but that didn’t work this time). Eventually some kid in a truck drove by and that distracted them long enough for me to get away. I’m not sure what happened to them after that, but again, not my problem.

After that it took me another 2 ish miles to loop back around to my house and once I got there I was just done. That was enough excitement for me that day. Oh well, aside from being chased by 2 little dogs (and can we just take a second to acknowledge that smaller dogs breeds are much more aggressive than most medium/large dog breeds?), I was happy with what I got done on Saturday. ๐Ÿ™‚

Sunday:

  • rest day

And a well earned one, I think!!

Total Weekly Mileage: 19.20

Between getting over an illness and all of the shenanigans that happened this week, I still got shit done!! All things considered, I got a decent amount of miles in and got a tiny bit of cross training and stretching done. All in all, I felt like I had a productive week. And my Garmin is telling me that I’ve been productive, so go me!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Weekly Recap: March 19th-25th, 2018

Spring is here, here in Kansas! At least for now. The Midwest can get kinda weird with the weather sometimes haha. But the highs have been mostly in the 50’s and 60’s this week, and of course I’m kinda sad to see winter go. But it’s sill pretty chilly in the mornings and evenings, so I haven’t really been experiencing any warmer weather running yet, since I typically run in the morning. Honestly though I should probably be trying to run during the warmer parts of the day, to help make transitioning to summer running and super hot weather just a little bit easier, but I’m just not ready to commit to that yet. I am a cold weather runner through and through. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The spring like weather has also brought some rain too, as it usually does here in the Midwest. We really needed it. It’s been pretty dry here lately. Plus I love rainy weather and think running in it is a lot of fun! Maybe that’s one of the reasons I’ve felt a little bit more motivated to run this week! Last week life kinda got in the way of running and instead of adjusting and making it happen, I let it fall to the wayside. But As predicted in my weekly recap last week, this week was better. ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday:

  • 3 easy miles
  • 35 minutes of yoga

It started raining late Sunday night and pretty much never stopped until later in the afternoon on Monday. Good thing I enjoy rainy runs! Because unless I wanted to wait until well after 3 pm (which I never want to do. Morning runs are more my jam), I was going to get wet during this run. Which I definitely did. Well, soaked is more like it! It was a lot of fun though, as most rainy runs are!

But I think I got frostnip on my legs. It was in the high 30’s/low 40’s and pouring down rain, and I wasย almostย dressed appropriately. I should have worn my wind pants over my running tights, because when I got home, wrestled myself out of my running gear, and hopped in the shower, I noticed the tops of my thighs were super red. That ended up being kinda itchy and uncomfortable for the rest of the morning but as I warmed up it mostly went away. Haha good thing I wasn’t out there any longer or I might have actually ended up with frostbite or hypothermia. Lesson learned; when in doubt, wear the second pair of pants.

Tuesday:ย 

  • 2 easy miles
  • 10 minutes of ab work

Yeah, this run didn’t feel easy. But I got most of it done without too many issues. Haha I was supposed to do 2 easy miles followed by a couple of 20 second strides, but I kinda skipped those. Still doing better than last week though! I feel like that’s becoming my mantra for this week. Hey, it totally works though! Did some ab work later in the day, and was very much looking forward to my rest day on Wednesday.

Wednesday:ย 

  • Rest Day
  • 40 minutes of yoga

I was definitely ready for this rest day haha. Did some restorative yoga, walked Lily, cleaned the house. It was nice. ๐Ÿ™‚ And since I don’t have any other photos from Wednesday, lets just take a second to appreciate how big my chicks are getting! I am so freaking excited about getting fresh eggs!!!

Thursday:

  • 1 hour on the stationary bike

On Tuesday I was kind of excited about having a rest day followed by a cross training day, but once I got there I felt kinda meh about the whole situation. I don’t particularly enjoy cross training. I think my stationary bike is super boring. But it is a necessary evil. ๐Ÿ˜‰ So I spent an hour pedaling on my stationary bike, while day dreaming about the interval workout I had planned for Friday morning.

Friday:ย 

  • Interval work

Speed work! Yay!! Did a 1 mile warm up, 30 minutes of intervals (1 minute of hard running, 30 seconds of recovery, followed by a 1 mile cool down. Haha a lot of that cool down was walking though. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Seriously though, this workout was so much fun! Hard. Really hard, considering I haven’t done any kind of actual speed work in forever. But it felt really good. Haha now if only I could hold that 7:35 pace for an extended period of time. That happened while running downhill with reckless abandon though. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I really should have done some stretching and foam rolling after that, but holy cow I was tired! I spend the rest of the day doing a whole lot of nothing. Totally worth it.

Anyway, my fancy new Oiselle running tights with all the pockets were supposed to show up on Friday but they never did. This is why I dislike the UPS. Every single time I order something online and it ships via UPS it ends up taking several more days than it’s supposed to to actually arrive. So I guess we’ll see when they show up…

 

 

Saturday:

  • 2 easy miles
  • 20 minutes of strength work

Turkey socks in March? Why not?! ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚

Actually, my feet were a little sore and the only compression gear I have that actually goes on my feet are holiday themed.๐Ÿ˜‰ But I mean, weโ€™re only a few days into spring and Iโ€™m already excited for fall. ๐Ÿ˜‚Anyway, the compression socks definitely helped, but my left heel was still kinda sore and that usually means my left IT band isnโ€™t happy. Running on cambered roads does that to me sometimes. Especially when I donโ€™t pay enough attention to my hips. Itโ€™s all connected, baby! So I cut my run short and followed it with some strength moves for my hips. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Sunday:

  • Rest Day
  • 40 minutes of stretching/foam rolling

Stayed up a little too late last night, slept like shit, woke up sore. Haha good thing it’s a rest day! I’m really glad that I ended up cutting my run a little short yesterday, because holy cow is my left IT band tight today! Luckily it’s not in any kind of pain though. My knee also doesn’t hurt and my left heel is feeling a lot better. All good signs. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve had troubles with this IT band before, but this time I think I caught it before it turned into actual IT band syndrome. Yay for listening to my body!! I wonder if my running form has changed because of my broken toe though. At this point it doesn’t really hurt at all and the toe seems to be back to normal, but I suppose that doesn’t mean I’m not doing something different with my left foot and just not noticing it. I really can’t think of another reason as to why my IT band would be acting up again. Especially since I’ve barely been running 10 miles a week and haven’t done anything to exciting besides my speed workout on Wednesday. Hmmm. Oh well, at least I’ve realized it’s on its way to becoming a problem and have started giving it a little extra love.

Today I took an Epsom salt bath, and spent some time on my yoga mat stretching my hips, IT band and foam rolling everything. Hopefully it just needed some attention and doesn’t turn into a thing, but it’s definitely something I’m going to be paying attention to.
