Weekly Recap: April 23rd-29th, 2018

Holy cow we’re already coming up on the end of April! It seems to me like January and February went by super slow, but now the months are starting to go by faster. Haha our perception of time is weird. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, this week was hard. I kinda figured it would be though, at this point I’m kinda upping my mileage and trying to build a decent base for my upcoming half marathon training cycle. Kinda don’t even want to think about that right now though, because I’m thinking I might have to do a few back to back long run days which might not be very pleasant haha. But gotta get myself ready for my back to back half marathons in November! And I’ve also got another 5k coming up on May 12th. I’m feeling pretty good about that race though! Oh and in July Luke and I are going to be going to Branson, MO on another vacation with a bunch of family members. All of that on top of everything else I’ve got going on (caring for my chickens, hanging out with the neighbor kids that just show up at my house now, the garden, the dogs obviously, everyday life, blogging, etc…) no wonder it seems like time is starting to speed up!

Okey Dokey then, lets get this week recapped!!

Monday:

  • 3 miles with a few strides at the end
  • 20 minutes of strength work

I was feeling motivated AF on Monday. That’s what all you crazy kids are saying now a-days right? AF? I don’t understand pop culture anymore! Send help!! πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰ Haha for real though, I was ready to get shit done on Monday! Although I really didn’t have much to get done that day. On the scheduled for me was 3 easy miles, which I did followed by a few strides because I think those are pretty fun! Then did some strength training. It wasn’t a long session but it was a hard one haha. I ended up regretting that for pretty much the rest of the week…

Tuesday:Β

  • 2 miles

Hahahahaha I totally faked my way through the workout I was supposed to do on Tuesday. So much for being motivated AF, right? πŸ˜‰ Ugh, it was just so sunny and warm out. Gross… That’s right ladies and gentlemen, it’s that time of year again! I’m not going to stop bitching about the weather until it starts getting cold again. So buckle up, because complaining about being hot and miserable is my favorite summer pass time. Anyway, at least I got the miles in on Tuesday.

Wednesday:Β

  • 6 miles

Ah hump day. Some stuff happened on this Wednesday.

So first off, I woke up tired and sore from that strength workout that I did on Monday. Fun times, but I knew it was coming haha. Ugh I really didn’t want to run on Wednesday, but the only thing that got me out the door was knowing that getting in my miles now is only going to make this year’s round of half marathon training that much easier. Plus my dad and brother ran 6 miles last night, and that was my plan for Wednesday anyway, so obviously I had to do it. I mean, I couldn’t let them beat me. πŸ˜‰

Also woke up with this song stuck in my head;

That’s not super relevant, it’s just a good song and I wanted to share it with you. πŸ˜‰

Oh and we also traded in our piece of shit SUV for a truck. Haha I talk about that here if you’re interested. But now we have a vehicle that’s not completely falling apart and that actually has heat! If you read about our adventures traveling to Colorado on Thanksgiving or to Illinois for Easter, then you might recall me saying that we spent a crazy amount of time freezing our butts off because the SUV’s heater didn’t work. But that’s not a problem anymore! πŸ™‚

Thursday:

  • 4 miles

My legs were still feeling sore and tired on Thursday. Still got my run done in the morning though! And good thing I did too, because Luke ended up leaving work early on Thursday and once he got home we drove to Illinois because he wanted to show off his truck to his dad haha. But since Luke had to work on Saturday we didn’t end up staying in Illinois for very long.

Friday:

  • Rest Day

So our one day in Illinois ended up coinciding with my rest day really well haha!

On Thursday I stayed the night at Luke’s dad’s house, then on Friday they went to Luke’s grandparents’ house to fish, but before they did that they dropped me off at my grandma’s house. So I spent most of Friday hanging out with her, our dogs, and my uncle. Then around 4 pm we packed up the truck and drove back home.

Saturday:

  • 10 miles

Oh man, I wasn’t entirely sure I was gonna make it through this weeks long run! Friday may have been a rest day, but spending 5 hours in a truck isn’t exactly relaxing. Plus I don’t likes drinking a lot on long car rides because I don’t like having to stop to pee haha. But my run actually ended up going alright! It was hot, slow, and kinda not so fun but I got it done without too many issues! πŸ™‚ Plus when we got home on Friday night my Honey Stinger and Nuun orders where waiting for my on the front porch, so I got to try out a few new things during my run on Saturday.

After my long run I spent a lot of time doing nothing haha. But that evening Luke and I ended up going bowling with my brother-in-law and his girlfriend. That was fun, but I was pretty tired haha.

Sunday:

  • rest day

Oh boy was I ready for this rest day!! After our short trip to Illinois, my long run, and then our bowling adventure I’m pretty darn worn out!! My legs are feeling surprisingly good though. They’re a bit tired, but not as sore as I thought they were going to be. Anyway, since I didn’t have to run I took some time to re-dye my hair. It’s a super long process so it’s hard to do it on days when I run. But I got it taken care of today. πŸ™‚

Total Weekly Mileage: 25.33Β

This week was a total success!! Hit my weekly mileage goal, did all of the runs that I wanted to do, traveled to Illinois and hung out with some family, went out and had some fun. It was a good week all around. πŸ™‚ I’m excited to see what I can make happen next week!

My First Time In Nebraska, Home Sweet Home, and New Addition To My Backyard Farm!!

My brother and I left Colorado Friday evening around 5 pm and ended up going on a little adventure haha. To avoid taking the toll roads that are in Colorado and Kansas, my brother ended up going just a little too far north and we ended up in Nebraska. That was pretty funny. When we crossed the state line and saw the “welcome to Nebraska” sign we looked at each other and asked how the heck did we end up here? Luckily we were still heading east, so that’s all that mattered haha. So we drove through Nebraska, into Iowa for a little bit (that was my brother’s first time in Iowa haha I’ve been trough there when Luke and I went to visit his mom in Minnesota), down into Missouri, and then finally into Kansas. We ended up adding an extra hour to our trip, but neither of us were too worried about that. Although it did kinda suck that we finally got to my house around 6 am.

We brought my mom’s dog Bella with us. My mom is currently in Illinois with my grandma and my brother needed to get some stuff in Illinois from my dad, so that all ended up working out well. She road on my lap the whole way to Kansas and then my brother had her in a crate for the 5 hour trip to Illinois from my house. Apparently she did well on that ride too. I’m not particularly a fan of little dogs, but she is sweet. πŸ™‚ Although my dogs weren’t too sure what to think of her haha. Especially Finn. I don’t think he’s ever seen such a small dog before.

Apparently leaving the dogs/cats/rabbits/ferrets/Luke all alone for a week wasn’t a great idea. Apparently Luke spend the whole week living off of frozen food, trying to keep the dogs under control, and they all spent the week wrecking the house haha. So I spent yesterday scrubbing floors, doing laundry, washing dishes, and lots of other cleaning. Fun times…But someone needed to do it. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, yesterday Luke and I started our next new and exciting adventure! We are expanding our backyard farm with the addition of 5 new chicks!! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Luke bought/built a chicken coop on Friday while I was still in Colorado, and then last night we went to Tractor Supply and got a brood box, heat lamp, a feeder/water thing, feed, vitamins, and of course the chicks themselves! Originally we were going to get 4 Isa Brown chicks, but they only had 3 of them left. So we got them and 2 other chicks of a different breed. Not gonna lie though, I don’t remember what they are haha. That’s not really important though, they’re good for laying and that’s what we want!

So we got our new babies home and set up in their brood box and slowly started introducing the dogs to them. Luckily Lily grew up on a farm and has some formal training, so she knows how to handle and how to behave around livestock, so we weren’t too worried about her. Haha she was actually pretty excited to see them! She used to herd my dad’s chickens all the time! Dean doesn’t want anything to do with them, which isn’t surprising. Dean has very little in the way of herding instinct and is pretty wary of anything new. Finn was the one we were most worried about. He’s got very impressive herding instincts but he is still young and very immature. Plus he really likes to nip at faces, which would be really good if he was working on cows, but obviously not so good when we’re talking about tiny little chicks. He ended up surprising us though and was very calm and never once showed his teeth to them. He has absolutely no clue what they are but you can see that he wants to herd them so badly haha. But luckily it’s looking like the dogs wont be an issue at all, so that’s good. πŸ™‚

So far the babies seem to be adjusting well. They handled meeting the dogs perfectly fine and they seem to have done well over night. They’ve been eating, drinking, pooping, and pecking around their brood box. So I’d say so far so good!! πŸ™‚ They’ve got to stay inside in their brood box for several weeks, but once they have all their feathers they get to be moved outside into the coop. Well, as long as it’s warm enough outside. So that’s all pretty exciting stuff! And before too long we’ll have our own eggs! I’m super excited about that! Like just about everything, home raised eggs are sooo much tastier/nutritious than store bought eggs. πŸ™‚

img_0183

And pretty soon we’ll be tilling our garden plots and getting ready to plant some things! As sad as I always am to see winter go, spring is a pretty exciting time around here. πŸ™‚

Oh and I’ve currently got 2 5k’s on my scheduled to look forward to! Next Sunday I’m going to be doing a Whiskey 5k with my dad. That’s going to be a lot of fun!! My dad and I always have fun together but I think this is going to be extra exciting haha. It’s my dad’s first official 5k, we get a super spiffy pint glass at the end, and Jack Stacks is providing brunch for all of the finisher’s which is awesome! Jack Stacks has some very tasty food!! πŸ™‚

img_0118

This is basically the perfect 5k for my dad. His last name is Martin (and mind was too before I got married haha), he basically collects neat glasses like this, and he likes whiskey. So like I said, perfect! πŸ˜‰

And then in May I’m doing the Running With The Cows 5k again. I’m really looking forward to doing that! I had a lot of fun at that race back in 2016 and this year I even plan on training for it! I’ve never done an actual 5k training program before so that should be interesting. Training for that actually starts tomorrow, so I’ll definitely keep you guys updated on how that goes! I’m hoping I’ll be able to shave off a little bit of time from current 5k times, so hopefully I’ll be able to make that happen! πŸ™‚

img_8690

That’s all I’ve got for now! No weekly recap for this week. I pretty much posted everyday while I was in Colorado and I really didn’t do much running anyway haha. Plus I’ve still got a bunch of cleaning to do and I’ve got to tend to my flock of chickens! πŸ˜‰

Happy Sunday!!

Yard Work Extravaganza!

Luke and I have been very busy bees the last few days. It rained pretty much all week last week, so the grass was super tall, there are weeds everywhere, the landscaping was a mess, there were little sapling trees growing all around the house and in our fence. Basically our front and backyards were just huge, gross messes and something really needed to be done about it. So yesterday I decided to get a jump on it, since its still early in the season it’s not too hot and there aren’t a crazy amount of bugs out it seemed like the ideal time to start all of this stuff.

So, while Luke was at work I totally weeded out the the front landscaping. That took me about two hours and by the time I was done my poor little hands were sore, red, and scratched up. Totally worth it though! The front of the house looks fantastic now! I also spent some time pulling out/digging up/chopping down a bunch of the little sapling trees that were everywhere. I couldn’t get all of them, but I got the ones that I could. And unfortunate I had to dig out one of our rose bushes. One of those little trees grew right in the middle of it and killed it. Luckily it wasn’t our really big, really pretty rose bush, but it still sucks that it died…

When Luke got home from work I picked up trash and sticks from the front yard and then he mowed it. Haha he’s very very particular about how the grass looks and he won’t let me mow it. And in all fairness, I’ve only ever really mowed a really big yard with a tractor or a zero turn lawn mower, so i’m not exactly good at mowing with a push mower haha. Anyways, once we finished that we took a trip to Home Depot. We desperately needed a hatchet to finish cutting down the tree saplings, and pruning shears to trim down our bushes. Those are getting hardcore out of hand…We also got some flowers for the front landscaping. We got some more lily bulbs to go with the lilies that are already out there, mint seeds (it helps keep pests away so I figured the front landscaping was a good place for it), and some African daisies (at least I think that’s what they are called). They are super duper pretty. πŸ™‚

img_2738

Seriously, how pretty are these guys?!

When we got home from the hardware store, Luke cut down the rest of the saplings while I planted and watered the flowers and mint. While we were doing that one of our neighbors came over and started talking to us, so Luke finished with the trees, and then we just kinda hung out on the front porch talking and whatnot (by then it was about 6:30 pm). So we talked for a while, and eventually my brother in law, my neighbors wife and his daughter and nieces ended up joining us. So we all hung out, talked, and had a few beers while the kids ran around the yard. It was a good time. πŸ™‚ Around 10:30 pm the kids needed to go to bed and so did we so we all said goodnight and were off to bed.

So I’m starting to learn that beer before bedtime just doesn’t really work for me. It’s super duper hard for me to fall asleep after drinking, even if it’s just a few beers. So I had a lot of trouble falling asleep last night which really sucked and when I finally did I didn’t really sleep well. When I woke up this morning I was sore everywhere. My legs, arms, back, butt. And to top it all off I was super tired and had a splitting headache. Fun times.

Anyway, I was supposed to do an easy run today, but the second I woke up I knew that wasn’t going to happen. Eh running would probably have been a bad idea anyway. I don’t want to feel like total shit for my long run tomorrow, so I figured it was a better idea to take today off and hopefully feel good during tomorrows run. I couldn’t take today completely off from everything though. There was still a bunch of yard work and garden stuff that needed to be done.

So around 10 am I headed outside to start weeding the side of the house since I didn’t get to that yesterday. Took me about 2 and 1/2 hours to finish just one side. Once I got that done I headed inside for a bit to eat lunch and to give my hands a bit of a break. Just a short one though. I still had bushes to prune and the other side of the house to weed.

So I pruned my bushes and started weeding the other side of the house. While was weeding Luke started trimming some more bushes. These guys were super unruly and I saved them especially for him. πŸ˜‰ Once I was done weeding I started carrying all of the branches he had trimmed to the wood pile. That involved a climb over a fence and a trek across the backyard, but it was kinda fun. 😁

Once we had finished up with all of that, Luke decided that he wanted red mulch in the landscape. So we waited an hour for his brother to get home, went to Menards, and bought 25 bags of red mulch. It took some work to get it all in the back of our SUV, and my poor brother in law was squished in the back with it all, but it all fit! So we went home, spread that all out where we wanted in and now here we are!

This is just the front, but it looks really good!

Now then, I’m in desperate need of a shower and food, so I’m going to go take care of that!

Happy Saturday!
