Weekly Recap: April 9th-15th, 2018

Oh man, this week started out really well! But on Wednesday I came down with a bad cold and that kinda derailed the rest of my week so that was super duper annoying… Ugh seriously though, whatever this illness was has sucked and went through really weird stages. I was hoping it wouldn’t be too bad when Luke and I originally got it, but nope. It knocked us both on our asses for several days.

Monday:

  • 3 easy miles

Started off my week with a little bit of 5k action! Nothing too exciting, but it was still a nice run. 🙂

Tuesday:

  • 2 miles
  • 35 minutes of stretching/foam rolling

Tuesday’s run was a little more exciting than Monday’s! Warmed up with a slow mile, did 10 reps of the cadence drill from Jeff Galloway’s “The Run Walk Run Method”, and then cooled down with a few more minutes of easy running. Eventually I’m probably going to stop doing this on its on, reduce the amount of reps I do, and use this as a warm up for speed work. But for now I’m having fun doing it on its own. 🙂

Wednesday:

  • rest day

I had started feeling kinda sick on Tuesday night, but I really got hit with it on Wednesday. Had a sore throat and just felt tired and crappy in general. So I spend the day resting and getting lots of kitty cuddles.

Thursday:

  • rest day

Still wasn’t feeling too great on Thursday. I think I was a little bit better, but not much. It was sunny and warm out so I took Lily for a short walk. Mostly because it sucks being stuck inside on really nice days, but also because I was hoping a dose a vitamin D would help my body to fight off this illness. Being sick is no fun. Anyway, I didn’t do that great of a job hydrating on Wednesday so I made a point to drink more water on Thursday. But of course I had to start my day off with some coffee, because caffeine. 😉

Friday:

  • rest day

I had a glimmer of hope on Thursday that I was gonna start getting better, but nope. On Friday I actually felt a little bit worse. Still had a sore throat, was tired, my ears felt kinda weird, and I got kinda dizzy a few times. Still no running, but Luke, who was also sick, and I did manage to run a few errands on Friday, including taking Finn to the vet to get his vaccines up to date. Haha at least someone around here has a clean bill of health.

Oh and the Oiselle leggins that I had to order twice because the UPS lost them the first time. Literally took a month, but I’ve finally got them and I absolutely love them! They’re super comfy, fit perfectly, and have SO MANY POCKETS!!!

Saturday:

I have no idea what kind of virus (because I’m assuming it’s viral) illness my 4 year old neighbor infected Luke and I with, but it’s been absolutely insane! For both Luke and I it started out feeling almost like an ear infection, then we were worried it might be strep because our throats hurt, our lymph nodes have been swollen, and Luke even had a fever at one point. Luckily that didn’t last longer than a few hours for him. And Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, I hadn’t experienced any kind of runny nose, congestion, or really much coughing or sneezing. But on Saturday I woke up with some insane chest congestion and a bit of a runny nose. I’ve officially banned all sick children from my house. I hate this so much. And it all would have been prevented if my neighbor would have just kept her sick kid at home.

Anyway, I’ve slept terribly the last couple of nights, and I didn’t even get out of bed until 9 am on Saturday. That’s pretty absurd for me, but I’m just so tired from being sick and not sleeping well. It’s pretty terrible. But when I woke up with chest congestion I knew I needed to get a few easy miles in to help clear me out a bit. Running usually does. So I did two slow, miserable miles on Saturday. They were not fun haha but I think they helped.

Sunday:

  • rest day

Ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh. This illness came, knocked both me and Luke on our asses and has pretty much kept me (not so much him though) there pretty much all week. It’s super fucking frustrating, especially since it all could have been avoided if someone would have kept a very sick and very contagious child at home. Really I’m just pissed that my week started out so freaking well and was going in a great direction and then that all came to a screeching halt when I got sick and could barely stand up for an extended period of time, let alone run.

Luckily I did wake up this morning feeling better. I think I might be on the upswing of this thing. I’m coughing/hacking/sneezing out all sorts of nastiness so that’s probably a good thing. All that coughing isn’t good for getting a restful night of sleep though, so that’s not helping my absolutely wonderful mood. But anyway, rest day today because Sunday is always a rest day for me anyway, and I figured another day of rest would do me some good. Spent the day feeling sorry for myself, getting involved with all of the hype surrounding the Boston Marathon (hey, it is our Super Bowl, right 😉 ), eating nutritious food, doing some light house work, and dying part of my hair purple again. I’m hoping I wake up feeling a lot better tomorrow, but I guess we shall see.

Total Weekly Mileage: 7.11

Oh man, that number makes me very sad…But there are some illnesses that you can run through and some you cannot, and unfortunately for me this one has been the latter. I’m obviously not happy about it, but I can’t do anything about it but continue on with training once I’m finally well again.

I hope you’re week has been great and that you’ve been healthy and happy!

Good Luck and have fun to everyone running Boston tomorrow! You’re all rock stars and we’re all rooting for you! 💙💛🦄

Well Dammit…

I guess all of the travel, super late nights, alcohol, not so great food (I mean it was delicious! But definitely not nutritious in any way, shape, or form haha.), and general Christmas craziness has finally caught up to me. I woke up tired, congested, and with a sore throat. Fun times…

So it’s looking like my running days in 2017 are over. Haha at the very least I wanted to do something that almost resembled a long run (6-7 ish miles?) and maybe even a few easy miles on New Year’s Eve, but that’s not gonna happen. Especially with how cold it is. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the cold and have actually run in colder/more crazy conditions (-10 degrees with at least 8 inches of snow on the ground. That was a super fun day. 🙂 ). But it’s probably not a great idea to attempt to run when it feels like -4 outside and you’re obviously coming down with something.

I guess today would be a great day to try out the “flu-fighter chicken and rice stew” recipe from Run Fast Eat Slow, but I don’t have all of the necessary ingredients and I don’t think getting out in this cold and driving to the store in a car that has no heat is a good idea anyway haha. I have a feeling that that wouldn’t help my current situation at all, and I don’t think the soup would is worth that. 😉 It does sound really really good though…

Anyways, I guess I’m going to spend the day curled up on the couch with my dogs (two of whom would rather be outside all day, but it’s waaaay too cold for that), Netflix and lots of tea. But at this point it’s looking like I’m going to be ringing in the new year sick. Sadface…

img_8657

Poor Dean would rather spend the day guarding the backyard from squirrels, birds, the evil mail lady (she’s actually really nice. My dogs are just assholes), and barking at his friend Cujo the German Shepard, who’s backyard is right behind mine. While Finn attempts to herd him and pretty much anything that moves. But it’s too cold for that today.

I hope everyone is well, has a good Saturday, and a safe and fun New Year’s eve!!

Weekly Recap: October 30th-November 5th, 2017

Monday:

  • 3 miles

I kind of ended up surprising myself on this run! My legs were kinda sore/heavy from my not so great long run last Saturday, but I actually ended up feeling really good and having a lot of fun on Monday! Good thing too, because after my run I spent the rest of the day taking care of my sick husband, and knew that more likely than not, I was going to end up getting sick too.

Tuesday:

  • First sick day

I would end up getting sick on one of my favorite holidays…not that it really matters though. Since Halloween fell on a Tuesday this year we didn’t really do anything fun, and it was pretty cold out so we only got 7 or 8 trick or treater’s. Anyways, spend the day watching a few Stephen King movies and pretty much moping around and feeling sorry for myself because I was too tired/weak feeling to do anything else.

Wednesday:

  • Second sick day
  • 20 minutes of yoga

I felt even worse on Wednesday than I did on Tuesday…So I spend most of the day laying around, resting, and watching movies. But I did do a quick little “yoga for when you’re sick” sequence, from the Yoga with Adriene channel on YouTube. It actually did feel kinda good to stretch and move around a bit. 🙂

Thursday:

  • Third sick day
  • 20 minutes of yoga

Oh man, I woke up feeling absolutely miserable on Thursday. But I think I was finally on the up swing. I wasn’t as achy or weak feeling as I was on the previous two days, and I was finally coughing up all the nastiness from my lungs, sneezing non stop, and even my ears were draining. So I figured everything was working it’s way up and out and that I was hopefully on the mend.

Still spent most of the day taking it easy and resting. I didn’t want to do too much and relapse or something. But I did do a little bit of light cleaning around the house (something I’d been neglecting since I got sick) and did the “yoga for when you’re sick” sequence again.

Friday:

  • Fourth sick day

Good news! Was feeling a little bit better (but still pretty shitty) on Friday! Bad news! Not good enough to run. I mean, I probably would have if I didn’t have a race coming up next weekend and wasn’t concerned about getting as healthy as possible by then. So as antsy as it’s making my feel, I took another day off to rest and recuperate from this damn chest cold. Hahaha this cold has seriously been making me wish I still had an appendix, which supposedly aids in our immune systems. I talk a little bit more about that in this post, if you’re interested. 🙂

Saturday:

  • 5th sick day

I initially thought that I was going to be able to get a short run in on Saturday, but eventually decided against it. I was just exhausted and sore all over from coughing. I was feeling a bit better though and did do a decent amount of walking around. 😊

Also, shout out to my awesome mother in law for sending me a box of Honey Stinger waffles as an early birthday present! I am 1000% sure that giving the runner in your life their favorite running fuel as a gift is the best idea ever haha. 😊

Sunday:

  • 6th sick day (but I think it’s finally almost over!)
  • 3.1 miles

Brought my total weekly mileage up to 6.22 today and felt absolutely great doing it!! Well aside from the fact that my chest, lungs, throat, back, and abs all hurt from all of the coughing and hacking I’ve been doing this week. But my legs felt fantastic! So hopefully that’ll carry over to next Saturday’s half marathon. I’ve also been wearing the finisher’s shirt from my first half marathon a lot lately for luck. Lol I need about as much of that as I can get!!! 😂 I’m coming for you for a 3rd time Longview Half!!! 🏃🏻‍♀️👍🏻😁
