Let’s Talk A Little Bit About Anxiety, Half Marathon Training Day 7, and A Few Other Random Things.

The worst part about having both asthma and anxiety is that sometimes it can be hard to tell which one is currently giving me trouble. Whenever my anxiety starts getting the better of me I start to unconsciously hyperventilate (according to a cardiologist that I saw anyway), and asthma is caused by the bronchi of the lungs constricting and producing extra mucus, so sometimes it can be kinda hard to tell them apart. Then whenever I do have trouble telling them apart that makes my anxiety even worse and therefore makes breathing feel even more difficult…Fun times.

The only reason I bring this up is because that’s currently what’s going on in my world and I’m trying to be more open about that kind of thing. I don’t talk a lot about my anxiety issues because they aren’t fun and they make me feel…I don’t know, I guess I’m going to say weak for lack of a better term (I’m sure there are better terms, but right now weak is the only work that my brain is providing me haha). But anxiety kinda runs in my family; my grandma, mom, both of my sisters, myself, and maybe even a few of my cousins all have it in some way, shape, or form. And since there’s a whole movement going on in the world about being more open about mental illnesses I feel like maybe I should hop onto that bandwagon. At the very least, talking more openly about it will probably make me feel better. At least I hope so. πŸ™‚

I like to send this to Luke when he tells me not to worry about stuff. πŸ˜‰

Anyways, I feel like that situation may have been the reason why this morning’s run felt super difficult. And oh man did it suck! I felt tired and heavy, basically it felt like I was running through cold molasses. And I feel like I really shouldn’t have felt that way. I went to bed around 8 pm last night because I wanted to get a little bit of extra sleep even though I had planned (and did! πŸ™‚ get up at 5 this morning so it made sense to go to be early. I woke up feeling pretty good in general and my legs felt rested and ready to run, so it did’t make much sense for me to feel so shitty during my run. But I did feel like breathing was a bit more difficult than it should have been and that might be the biggest contributing factor to this run’s shitty-ness haha.

So I did two miles, threw myself a pity party on my porch because I quickly realized this run was not going well, ran 3 more miles, then called it quits. The plan was to go 8 miles, so I was a tad bit disappointed that I only made it 5, but I fought very hard to make those 5 miles happen and I’m proud of myself for making it that far because I seriously wanted to quite the second I started running this morning. Plus I made a promise to myself to run 2-3 more mile in the evening so at the very least I would end up making it close to 7 or 8 miles for the day.

After my run and shower I decided that my problem was anxiety and not asthma, so I just kinda hung out and relaxed for a while. I ate second breakfast, worked on some blog posts, pursued Pintrest, and made a wishlist on goneforarun.com because I have no life apparently haha. But I mean, I always get those visa gift card things for my birthday/Christmas and I always end up using them to buy stuff online, so now this year I’m going to be super prepared haha!! Seriously though, they have a lot of neat stuff and I want ALL OF THE HALLOWEEN AND CHRISTMAS THEMED STUFF! And I guess if you wanted to see what all I’m into on goneforarun.com you can check that out here. πŸ˜‰

Every single time I try to sit down with a laptop or a book I end up with a cat in my lap…

Around noon I decided that I had spent waaaay too much time on the internet so I cleaned up around the house, did a lot of reading (I’m currently re-re-re-re-reading Stephen King’s Dark Tower series. It’s my all time favorite!), took Lily for a little walk, played with all three dogs, read some more, fed the dogs/cats, then got ready to do my second run of the day!

Like I mentioned earlier, I had promised myself 2-3 more miles this evening, but I was feeling pretty darn good so I set out with the intention to do 3. Mission accomplished!!

So I started my day with a run at sunrise and ended my day with a run at sunset. How freaking cool is that! Plus I totaled 8 miles today which was my goal for my run this morning, but hey, at least I got them all in!

So the first 2 miles of this run were fantastic! I felt sooo good! But going 2 miles tends to bring me back to my house like it did this evening, and I made the terrible decision to chug some Gatorade before finishing my last mile. Haha yeah, I ended up with some pretty awful stomach cramps and I had to do quite a bit of walking. Oh well, 3 miles is still 3 miles and I had fun getting them done. Even with the terrible stomach cramps.

Anyway, I just got out of the shower and I need to do some yoga and slowly sip on some water.

I hope your Saturday was fantastic!

Back To Scheduled Programming!

Well, sorta.

I really wanted to run this morning, especially considering the fact that I only ran once while I was in Florida, but we are currently under a heat advisory that started at 3:00 this morning and the air quality here in Kansas is in the yellow or moderate zone today. Not a good combination for an asthmatic like myself…Plus I spent the whole Florida trip around 2 very heavy smokers and that always ends up giving me trouble. Especially when I have to be around it for an extended period of time. So I decided that running probably wouldn’t be the best idea for me today. Hopefully by tomorrow the heat advisory will be over and my lungs will feel a little bit better, but I guess we shall see.

I did still get up relatively early this morning though. My garden is in not so great shape after not being tended to for 10 days. The grass is super high, the weeds are abundant, my zucchini died (sad face), whats left of my lettuce is dying, and everything else just needed watered. Badly. So I did as much weeding as I could (it was starting to get really hot and I was struggling haha, it’s a very good thing I did not run today), watered everything, and tried pulling as much grass as I could. I was going to weed eat it, but my weed eater’s battery was completely dead and it didn’t charge fast enough, so unfortunately I had to leave most of the grass out there super high for today. I should be able to get that all taken care of tomorrow though. And usually I’d have the rabbits out there to help keep the grass mowed down, but I can’t leave them outside when it’s this hot. They would absolutely fry out there. But I did let them eat some grass while I was out there working this morning, I just had to bring them in when I called it a day.

My first watermelon of the year!

While I was out there I did pick 10 HUUUGE cucumbers (they sat out there for too long, but surprisingly enough they really aren’t that bitter, which is really weird because they usually are if you let them get too big), my first watermelon of the year (and there are a few more growing out there and I’m so super stoked about that!), and 5 banana peppers. And my tomato plants are covered with some very nice looking green tomatoes, so I’ll be having an abundance of tomatoes very shortly! πŸ™‚ But I’m still super upset about losing my zucchini plant…Zucchini is my favorite. 😦

As you can see, I took this photo before I found the rest of the cucumbers. πŸ˜‰

But anyways, I feel a lot better now that I’ve been able to tend to the garden, even if it was just a little bit, but now I really need to get to work on cleaning up the house. It was an absolute disaster when Luke and I got home yesterday. My brother in law’s dog’s hair was everywhere (I swear his dog sheds more than all 3 of mine combined) and that sure didn’t help my whole asthma issue. There were plates and dishes and silverware everywhere, along with some trash. I don’t thing either of our brothers did the dishes while we were gone (there are so many dishes that need done…) and I’m pretty sure they only got the mail once (but I’ll get to that in a second). My brother had brought his cat with him and he pooped all over the house (I also think he peed in a few places but I haven’t quite figured that out yet). And the floor is just covered in mud. It wasn’t a good situation to come home to.

Luckily I did get a lot of that stuff taken care of yesterday while Luke went out to coffee with one of his friends, so really now all I need to do is vacuum again and mop the whole house, clean off the kitchen counter, and do laundry. We have so much laundry haha. But I’m working on it. πŸ™‚

But anyway, I think our brothers only got the mail once, because Luke’s brother brought in an important piece of mail that he’d been waiting on and that got here while we were gone. And my brother brought in a hoodie that I had ordered from Adeline Records (which is a record company that Billie Joe Armstrong, along with a few other musicians started/own) and literally got to the house an hour after we left the house haha. But other than that, there was quite a bit of mail shoved into our mailbox haha. Oh well, Luke and I are just happy that the stuff we had been waiting on got here and then made it into the house safely. πŸ™‚

Now I just wish it was actually cold enough to wear my super spiffy new hoodie! But unfortunately it’s going to be a while before that happens.

Anyway, along with the usual bills, news papers, and junk mail, my second ever Stride Box was shoved into our mailbox!

Yay! I’m so super excited about StrideBox you guys! Not gonna lie, I’ve always been kinda skeptical about the whole subscription box thing, but StrideBox has definitely won me over in just two months! So far it’s come with some pretty awesome stuff! I especially like the fact that it comes with things that I probably wouldn’t actually buy if I just saw them at the store, so its a great way for me to try out new things, and then if I like whatever it is that I’ve tired I’ll know exactly what it is! And for only $15 a month (and that includes shipping!!) I thing it’s totally worth it and I would definitively recommend any runner to at least check them out. πŸ™‚

Anyway, I guess I need to quit procrastinating and finish cleaning up the house, but first I need to drink my tea out of my fancy, new Florida mug, and maybe read a few articles from this months issue of Runner’s World haha. πŸ˜‰

I hope you’re having a great Tuesday!

Weekly Recap: October 31st-November 6th, 2016

Monday:

  • 3 easy miles

Nothing fancy or exciting for Monday’s workout, but that’s fine with me! I did, however, have a bunch to talk about on Monday and you can find that all here. πŸ™‚

Tuesday:

  • 1 Mile

I was supposed to do an interval workout on Tuesday, but my brother-in-law has picked up smoking (although he’s supposedly trying to quit) and he hangs out with other people who smoke, so he always smells like cigarettes and so does his bedroom (which is in my house btw). This is a huuuge problem for me because cigarette smoke is my number one asthma trigger. Seriously, anytime I’m near him (or anyone else who smokes) I get headaches, have trouble breathing, and feel like I’m going to die. So I’ve been having a pretty awesome time lately…and long story short, my lungs/throat hurt on Tuesday and I couldn’t do my workout.

That kinda turned into a rant and I apologize for that. I actually don’t have a problem with people who smoke or anything, and usually I’m ok to be around it as long as we’re outside and the smoke isn’t being blow directly in my face, I mean, I don’t exactly feel great, but it’s not bad and I tend to get over it quickly. But this constantly being exposed to it isn’t giving my body a chance to heal and it really fucking sucks.

Wednesday:

Felt a little better on Wednesday. Like I said, my brother-in-law is trying to quit smoking so that’s been helping, and he’s making more of an effort to keep that shit away from my pathetic asthma ridden ass. But, at least he’s trying and I give him that.

Thursday:

  • Intervals
  • 10 ish minutes of my husband using my massage roller on my legs. He’s awesome! πŸ™‚

Alright! My lungs were feeling a lot better on Thursday, which is awesome! And I finally broke through the running slump I was in by PRing my 5k time by 40 seconds. Yay me! Then that night my husband rolled my legs for me. He gets in there much deeper than I can so it’s really nice when he does it. Thursday was a good day. πŸ™‚

img_9581

Friday:

  • Rest day

This was really weird, because for the most part, my training plan had me resting on Thursdays and doing a speed workout on Friday, but this week was switched, and I kept forgetting that it was actually Friday. I even almost forgot to put the trash cans up (as Friday is trash day), because I seriously woke up thinking it was Thursday. Haha whatevs. I was also really feeling the whole taper thing on Friday. I really wanted to run. I was also really wishing that my “long run” this week was more than 6 miles. That’s just no fun.

For more awesome photo’s like this follow me on Instagram. I feel like things get real weird, real fast on there. πŸ˜‰

Saturday:

  • 10k
  • 25 minutes of stretching

With that I’m pretty much done with the whole training thing! Now all that’s left to do is rest, do a few easy runs, and then run my second half marathon! At this point I’m super excited to see how I do, because I’ve been PRing all over the place lately.

This 10K was no exception. Since this is the last run I really get to have any fun with until next Saturday, I decided I was going to PR my 10k time, as my schedule called for 6 miles anyway. So I did. By like, 3 minutes. πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ˜„ Haha I must be doing something right if I can just decide to PR and then actually do it! I’m super proud about that. 😁 And that’s super close to one of my big goals for the year, which is to do a 10k in 1:20:00. At this rate I should definitely be able to do that by the end of the year!

Sunday:

  • Rest Day

Total Weekly Mileage: 16.48

Not bad! Still kinda wish I could have made it to 18 miles like I would have if I’d have actually done Tuesday’s workout, but oh well, I’m still happy with how this week went.

Usually I try to keep my weekly recap from being too long and boring, but I ended up rambling a bit in this one, so if you actually read all of this; thanks for putting up with me!
