Weekly Recap: September 16th-22nd, 2019

Monday:

  • 3 easy miles

Found a turtle friend (who was promptly moved off of the street), got chased by a big, mean, yellow lab that was running loose (it was a short chase, he got distracted by a car and started chasing that), and then talked to a guy who was looking for his dog who took off after the yellow lab. It was a very eventful 3 miles. πŸ˜‚

But I was glad to get it in! Last week I was sick and ran a grand total of 2 miles. Not good…and honestly I feel like this whole training cycle has been absolute shit and I’m kinda freaking out because I’m not sure I’m going to get two half marathons done in two days this November. I feel like I just keep getting slower. I haven’t had a good long run in forever and most of my long runs haven’t even been long lately. Oh man I just feel like I’m so fucked right now.

Tuesday:

  • 1.5 miles on the treadmill
  • 20 minutes of hip/glute work

This didn’t help with my confidence. Which is a bummer because it’s already crazy low. The plan for Tuesday was a long interval workout. I made it through the warm up and one out of 3 intervals. Gross.

Honestly I’m not sure if this was a mental thing or a physical thing. Probably a little bit of both. Either way, I just didn’t have it in me that day.

My little strength session turned out to be really good though, so at least that’s something! πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Wednesday:

  • 3 easy miles
  • 20 minutes of arm/shoulder work

I wanted to do 5 but I only made it through 3…If you couldn’t tell, I’m just having a really rough go at things right now. Hopefully they’ll get better soon, but not gonna lie, I’m not all that optimistic about it right now.

Thursday:

  • Rest day

Was supposed to cross train, but I wasn’t feeling it. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Friday:

  • Rest day

Now this was an actual scheduled rest day! πŸ˜‚

I started making some bone broth on Thursday and finished it on Friday (it’s got to cook for 24 hours for maximum nutrient absorption). Honestly I’d rather make bone broth myself versus buying it from a store. It’s so much more rich and flavorful when you make it yourself. I also made a piss ton of chocolate chip cookies. I’ve been on a bit of a baking spree lately and I’m my opinion, nothing is better than made from scratch chocolate chip cookies!

All of this baking hasn’t been good for my nutrition game though. Especially since o could really stand to lose some weight. But baked goods are yummy. πŸ˜‹πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚

Saturday:

  • 10 miles

I redeemed myself this week with this run! At least that’s what it felt like. In all honesty it’s been a while since I’ve done a double digit run (yikes!) but this one went surprisingly well. Especially considering it was about 73 degrees and 97% humidity when I started this run. I got through it though! So obviously the lesson here is fuel your long runs with a ridiculous amount of cookies. πŸͺπŸ˜‰

Also, it’s starting to look like fall in Kansas, but it sure doesn’t feel like fall…

Sunday:

  • 3 easy miles

It was POURING down rain when I started out today! So I got soaking wet. That didn’t last very long though. The rain stopped and the wind picked up a little bit so I got a little blow dried. That was a lot less fun that the rainy part. πŸ˜‚ All in all it was a pretty good run though! My legs felt surprisingly good especially considering that I did my first double digit run in FOREVER yesterday. So I’ll take it!

Total Weekly Mileage: 20.51

This isn’t were I wanted to be at this point of half marathon training. I wanted to be getting closer to 30 miles by now. I’m 7 weeks out from race week so I still have some time left to put in some actual work though. Definitely not as much as I’d have liked, but here we are. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

I’ve had quite a lot going on lately. Being sick, looking for a job (which is hopefully about to happen. Just not at a particularly desirable place.), and honestly just not being into running for the past couple of months if I’m being honest. I spent a lot of time not wanting to do it, hating the process, hating that I always seem so ridiculously slow no matter what I do, and just not wanting to do it anymore. I’ve finally worked my way out of that headspace though and I’m ready to go, get shit done, and be in love with the process again.

I’ve got 7 weeks until I run two half marathons in two days with my dad. And I’m ready to work! Although at this point I’m coming to terms with the fact that they are both going to be incredibly slow half marathons. My dad has a lot of stuff going on in his world so he hasn’t been training at all. I’m about to start working at a plant that produces cat litter and I’m going to be on my feet for 12 hours a day 3, sometimes 4 days a week. That’s definitely going to affect my running. At least at first. That’s ok though. I’m ready to start embracing some chance and working my running around it. Because I’ve fallen back in love with running again. And I’m going to make training happen however I can. Because while my next two races will be slow ones, there are always other races in the horizon! (I don’t even want to think about how things are going to go when I inevitably have to work overnights. But I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it, I suppose).

Happy last day of summer! Fall is almost here!! Now if only the weather would get with the picture! πŸ‚πŸ

Running Doesn’t Have To Be Fancy Or Pretty Or Perfect

I shared this on Instagram on Wednesday, but I wanted to share it here as well just in case you don’t follow me there. 😊

How often do you look at a photo of yourself mid run and think to yourself β€œwow I look attractive!” If you’re like me the answer is probably not often. But that’s not the point of running. Despite what those people with perfectly curated Instagram accounts with professionally done photos, wearing the latest and fanciest gear, while hardly breaking a sweat might want you to believe.

Running isn’t supposed to be a pretty sport! That’s part of the fun of it really! It’s a sport quite literally filled with blood, sweat, and tears. Dirt and snot. Messy, windblown hair and crusty, salty skin. I think that’s incredibly freeing. Especially in the world of very photoshopped Instagram models that we live in.

Fuck looking pretty. Fuck having to look a certain way to get likes and engagement. Here I am. Bad angle, double chin, and all. Wearing a 5 year old tank top and leggings that have holes in them (which you can’t see, but I promise they’re there), in a slightly edited (I mean, you HAVE to put a filter on it πŸ˜‰), but not photoshopped photo that I took by screenshotting a video I took on my iPhone. Nothing fancy.

That’s the beauty of it though! Running doesn’t have to be fancy or pretty or perfect. Running can be whatever you want to make it.

My Break From Being A Runner

Just in case anyone wanted to know how my Sunday morning went; I tried to brew coffee without the coffee. πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Honestly, that pretty much sums up my week. I ran a grand total of one time this week and that was a whopping two miles. Mostly because I’ve been sick and for a while there anytime I attempted to do anything physically active that seemed to make it worse. So on Thursday after my one very short run this week I decided that I was done for this week and I was going to take a break from being s runner. If that makes any sense? Hahaha it made sense to me anyway.

(Which is why there is no weekly recap this week. I really don’t have much to recap. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ)

So on Friday Luke and o did our usual every-other-Friday routine. He played 18 holes of golf in the morning and I road along with him in the golf cart (which was the fastest cart on this side of the Mississippi! πŸ˜‰). Then we went grocery shopping, ran some errands, and other random boring adult stuff, then we went to a second golf course. πŸ˜‚

The second course we went to is a walking course, which is a lot less fun after riding around in the fastest cart on this side of the Mississippi all morning, and I actually played at this one! We only did 9 holes though. I was hoping the physical activity would help clear out my nose and chest and make me feel a little better, but honestly I ended up feeling worse by the time we were done. But I did get a SpongeBob ball that day, so obviously that made things a little better. πŸ˜‰

At this point I was just so done. I was tired of being sick, tired of not running. But also tired of always being worried about running and training for races and trying to improve my fitness and all of that fun stuff. Stressed about the job search and kinda bummed about the fact that I’m probably going to end up working at the Clorox plant here in town. Which in and of itself isn’t bad. But the having to work 12 hour shifts overnight is going to be a tough transition for me.

So I did something that I rarely ever do anymore. I got two bottles of wine and drank on on Friday night and the other last night. That’s two evenings in a row that I spent pleasantly buzzed on wine stuffing my face with whatever I wanted and just completely ignoring all of the things that have been causing me stress lately. It was kind of nice, actually.

There was definitely wine in that mug. πŸŽƒπŸ˜‚

Honestly I couldn’t tell you the last time I drank two nights in a row. I don’t drink very often anymore and especially not a couple of nights in a row like that. Mostly because I just don’t feel great afterwards and that makes running hard. That or I just don’t run after a night of drinking. But like I said before, I was taking a break from being a runner. πŸ˜‰

So I spent my weekend attempting to read the last book in Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series. I say attempting because finishing a series is always hard. Especially when you’ve already read it many many times and you know stuff that’s about to happen and how it’s ends. I kind of hate how this series ends. Mostly because it’s not the ending I wanted. πŸ˜‚ The problem is the ending makes so much sense and it’s kind of perfect. So I guess that’s what makes it so good. I’m not ready for it to end for the 19th (anyone see what I did there πŸ˜‰) time yet so I’ve been slowly making su way through it. πŸ˜‚

In my procrastination of finishing this book series I’ve fallen waaay into a Weezer and Fall Out Boy rabbit hole. Two bands I haven’t really exploded much since high school. Except I do often get nostalgic and listen to their songs that I liked from way back when, but now I’ve been listening to their “new to me” stuff. Hahaha ever since the Hella Mega tour with Weezer, Fall Out Boy, and Green Day was announced all I’ve been listening to has been those three bands. πŸ˜‚

Ah man, I’d love too see a show on the Hella Mega tour, but at this point it’s looking like the closest they’re actually coming to me is Chicago which is like 8 and a half hours away from me. Under other circumstances and if I had the money I’d be willing to travel farther than that to see show on this tour, but I kinda hate Chicago (been there once and I never want to go back πŸ˜‚) and don’t really want to go there. Plus it’s at Wrigley Field and as a person from the St. Louis area and therefore and obligated Cardinals fan, I feel like I’m not allowed to get there unless it’s to see the Cards play against the Cubs. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚ (That is a joke my friends! For real though I just wouldn’t want to travel to Chicago. πŸ˜‰)

So for now I guess I’m just going to have to be content with YouTube videos and people live streaming shows on Instagram. Hahaha that’s always better than nothing!

Anyway, back to what I was originally talking about, my weekend was spent putting more time and energy into the other things that I love and not worrying about the fact that I only ran two miles this week, or that in 8 weeks I’m running two half marathons in two days (yikes!), and how poorly I feel like this whole training cycle has gone so far. I took a break from all of that and I think it was much needed!!

Today I focused on eating better and re-hydrating. I definitely needed to do that! But for the most part I spent my day listening to the And That’s Why We Drink podcast and cleaning, doing chores around the house, and just kinda reveling in the last day I’m giving myself to not be a runner. Tomorrow I’ll go back to being a runner and attempting to salvage my training somehow (and worrying about getting a job and all of that fun stuff) but not today. Today was a chill, kick back and relax while occasionally cleaning stuff kinda day. A good way to wrap up my little break from everything, I think. 😊

Happy Sunday, everyone!

~Ashley

September 12th, 2019

I spent my whole morning calling and emailing people today. Fun times.

As I said in my last post, I’m trying to get hired into the local Clorox plant in my town that produces cat litter. Probably not a glamorous job and after the 3 month trial period the hours aren’t great (probably going to be working overnights. Not looking forward to that), but the pay is pretty decent! But most labor Julius like this are. So that’s good!

But it sounding like I’m going to be hired on, so I am grateful for that!

Anyway, I’m finally starting to feel better today! Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday were rough though. I felt terrible and I wasn’t sleeping well because I was constantly coughing. Last night was a lot better though and I was actually able to sleep. So that’s probably part of the reason I’m feeling better today! 😊

Definitely not 100% though. After literally NO running during the first half of this week I finally felt well enough to give it a shot today. So I hopped onto my treadmill and went into things with 0 expectations. Which was definitely a good thing! After 2 miles I was really tired and not in the “I’m having a really good workout” way, ya know? Probably because I am still sick. So I stopped there. Something is always better than nothing though! Plus running is a great way to clear out a snuffy nose and congested chest!

Anyway, I think I made the right decision stopping when I did. According to my Garmin I was working a lot harder than I actually was. Or than I thought I was at least. πŸ˜‚

That’s the thing with being sick or injured though. You’ve kinda got to roll with things and just listen to your body. Even if that means skipping a few runs. Because more likely than not you’ll end up getting back to running faster when you give yourself the rest you need instead of trying to power through it.

But learning to actually listen to your body and know what it needs is hard! I’ve been running for 6 years now and I still get it wrong sometimes! But you do eventually start to learn. The biggest thing I look for is having a kinda sore/scratchy throat. Even if I’m not sick or anything like that. For me personally, that’s always an indication that I need to back off! And once I do the sore/scratchy throat feeling goes away. I just think it’s interesting how connected the WHOLE body really is, and that something as small as a sore throat can be an indication that you’re pushing too hard. Or just need a little bit of extra rest or whatever.

Anyway, just a quick little update for today!

Until next time,

~Ashley

Bummer…

Remember the real good day I had two weeks ago? Well yesterday was kinda the opposite of that. πŸ˜‚

First and foremost I got sick. Yuck.

I kinda saw that one coming though. Luke was sick over the weekend and every time he gets sick I also end up catching it because my immune system sucks. On Sunday I thought I was going to get lucky but nope, yesterday I woke up feeling not-so-great and it just progressively got worse from there. Fun times man.

A large icee was absolutely necessary yesterday. It made my slightly sore throat feel better.

That afternoon I got a rejection email from Garmin. Honestly I knew that job was a super long shot anyway, but I was hoping to get it. I thought the interview went well and it sounded like a great place to work, but apparently they didn’t think I was a good fit. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Oh well. Hopefully this just means there’s something better on the horizon!

At least I sure hope it does! If not I’m probably going to end up working at a cat litter factory here in my town. That’s definitely not preferable, but you gotta do what you gotta do. The cat litter factory is better than what I’ve got going on now, which is basically nothing. Sure, I get a little something from blogging but not enough to sustain myself. So I’ve got to start bringing in an actual income somehow.

And running lately has just been…not great. I feel like my failed attempt at a long run last weekend was due to the fact that I was coming down with a pretty gnarly cold (seriously, it’s been bad for both Luke and I). But the rest of last week just didn’t go well either. And same fit the week before that. And the week before that. Yuck.

I feel like I’m just not recovering properly. I really need to get my diet in check (I feel like I’ve been eating like shit for a while now as well). I definitely need to eat more protein. Probably in the form of meat. I know I’ve felt better and even recovered better when I had more meat in my diet but bleh. I’m just not big into meat. I’m not a vegetarian or anything (although I do have plenty of days where I do actually eat what would be considered a vegetarian diet), I’d just rather eat other things. But that’s definitely something I’m going to have to work on. I feel like if I can get my diet on track I’ll be able to get back on track with running.

But I do have to say, this cold sure isn’t helping with that! Hopefully I’ll get over it soon though. I’ve already missed out on too much running this training cycle and now I’m missing out on more because Monday and today I just haven’t felt well enough to run. My sinuses and ears are pretty clogged and that’s been making me dizzy. To me, that is a pretty definitive sign that I need to be resting and not running right now.

Anyway, I’ve thrown myself enough of a pity party. But buckle up folks because I’m taking off my pity party hat and putting on my mega fan-girl hat!

GREEN DAY IS DOING THINGS!!!!!!!!

I’ve been in hardcore fan-girl mode ever since rumors of a new album started floating around. And that happened a while ago actually.

Then more rumors started about a tour with Weezer and Fall Out Boy (still not sure how I feel about that). That was basically confirmed Sunday night via an instagram post on the tour’s instagram account. Plus hints at something more to come on September 10th (today!!).

People were speculating that a new single was going to be released. Which it was!! Along with the albums release date. Plus the Hella Mega tour was officially announced and tonight Green Day, Weezer, and Fall Out Boy will be playing at the Whisky a Go Go tonight.

Whew! So there’s been a lot going on in the Green Day fandom today! πŸ˜‚

I gotta say, I’m still torn about the new album cover. But I aside from the weird vocals I think the new single is kick ass! So far I’m loving it and all of the Green Day hype that’s been happening today! So honestly all of that has made me feel a lot better. πŸ˜‚

Today has been a wild ride emotionally. πŸ˜‚ Things could definitely be better, but right now everything is Green Day and nothing hurts. Well, except for my throat, chest, and lungs from coughing, but you get what I mean. πŸ˜‰

Here’s hoping all of this means there are better things on the horizon!

But that’s all for now!!

Your favorite Green Day fan-girl,

~Ashley

Ps;

I really hate doing this but anyone wanna help a girl out and “buy me a coffee“. I know I haven’t exactly been blogging much but I was way back when I started my ko-fi account, which is why I made it. I just thought it would be a good way to keep the blog going (domain fees and keeping a blog monetized is no joke!) but right now we are in a tight spot, especially after Lily’s emergency surgery (hence my search for a “real” job”) and could use a little help if anyone is willing! I promise I’m really going to get back into blogging and really earn any of those “coffees”!

So that being said, is there anything in particular anyone wants to read more about here on this blog? Or anything you want to read less of?? I’d love to hear any suggestions anyone might have!

And with that I’m officially signing off for the day! I’ve got plenty of Green Day stuff to keep up with tonight. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

Weekly Recap: September 2nd-8th, 2019

Have you ever felt like a week just kinda…slipped through your fingers? That’s how I feel about this week.

Like, one second it was Monday and then all of a sudden it was Friday and I had no idea where all of that time had gone. πŸ˜‚ Of course I DO know where that time went! It just all felt like a blur!!

I guess that probably had something to do with the long weekend. Tuesday felt like Monday and everything just got thrown off from there. So yeah, this week wasn’t a really good one. Things just kinda got away from me. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Monday:

  • 9 holes of golf
  • 20 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 7 minutes of core work

Happy Labor Day!!!

How did you celebrate?? (I’m not even going to get into the irony that is Labor Day. We’re supposed to be celebrating laborers and yet they’re the one’s who usually have to work and office workers are the one’s who get the day off? πŸ€”)

Anyway, Luke and I celebrated by hitting the golf course and playing 9 holes. I’m still really bad at pretty much everything aside from putting. I am really really good at putting. So I guess maybe I should stick to mini golf. πŸ˜‚

  • Tuesday:
    • Tempo run on the treadmill, 3 miles
      5 minutes of arm work

Ok, so this was actually something I did get right this week!

Tempo runs are probably my least favorite workout to do. Like ever. But I think this one went really well!! I wouldn’t say I crushed it, but it was a decently solid workout.

Followed that with a tiny bit of arm work. Hahaha something is better than nothing, right?! πŸ˜‰

    Wednesday:

    • Rest day

Now here’s where things really start to get wonky. The plan was to switch Thursday’s cross training with Wednesday’s run. Obviously that didn’t happen.

But I did take Dean for a nice walk Wednesday evening. I actually took a dog for a walk every evening this week (this photo is actually from Tuesday nights walk, but whatevs. πŸ˜‚). That’s been really nice. Dusk is probably my favorite time of day, and while it’s still pretty warm here I’ve really been enjoying my evening walks.πŸŒ™

    Thursday:

    • 15 minutes stationary bike
    • 10 minutes Pilates

My job interview with Garmin was Thursday morning!! How weird do I look without my nose ring in???πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I think I look weird, anyway. It’s been pierced since I was 19 (so 8 years) and I rarely ever take it out. But I wanted to make a good first impression for this interview so it had to go. Along with my purple hair. I’m not sure if I’ve actually mentioned that here, but I dyed my hair black last weekend with this interview in mind. I wanted to look a little less like a rebellious teenager. I’m not sure if I managed that, but I tried!

Anyway, I think the interview went well! I should hear back from Garmin at some point next week so fingers crossed that they decide to move forward in their interview process with me! 🀞🏻

Now my interview was at 8:30 in the morning. Which is usually when I do my running. But one thing just kinda happened after another on Thursday and by the time I realized that I never ran it was like 8:30 pm and I didn’t feel like doing it. So I didn’t… I did hit up the stationary bike and do a little bit of Pilates though, so again, something is better than nothing!

But this is why I prefer to run in the mornings. Then it’s out of the way and I don’t have to worry about it for the rest of the day. πŸ˜‚

But if I do get this job with Garmin I’m either going to have to wake up at like 4:30 am to get my runs done, run on my lunch break (which apparently a lot of people do. No surprise there. This is Garmin we’re talking about. πŸ˜‰), or run in the evening. But I guess I’ll figure that out as needed!

    Friday:

    • 3 miles

This run was kinda meh. My legs have just been tired and heavy. Which is weird considering how little running I’ve done this week. I was hoping that a nice and easy 3 miles would help, but it didn’t end up helping at all. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Oh well. I was still glad to get this run done. πŸ˜„

    Saturday:

    • 4.47 miles
    • 30 minutes of yoga and foam rolling

Ew yeah no, this did not go well. My quads were REALLY hurting on Saturday. Gross.

My husband got sick with a bad cold and I’m really hoping I don’t end up catching it too, but I’m also kinda wondering if that’s why I felt so tired and sore on Saturday. Gross.

    Sunday:

    • rest day

Well so far I’m not feeling terrible, but I’m still not feeling great either. Hopefully after a rest day I’ll be fine but my throat is starting to feel a little scratchy so I don’t know. Usually if my husband gets sick I end up catching it not long after… I’m really hoping I don’t end up with this bug though. I’ve already missed out on enough running, I don’t need to miss anymore.

But yeah. This week, it just got away from me. It happens though. Hopefully next week will be better!

    Happy Sunday!

    ~Ashley

    August 27th, 2019

    Today was a good day!!!

First and foremost, I started off my day by listening to my Halloween playlist! Well, my Halloween playlist in progress, anyway. After my debacle with iTunes a few months ago all of my old playlists are gone along with a bunch of my music, so I’ve been using Spotify quite a bit. And my Halloween playlist on there isn’t quite as good as my old one on iTunes, but it’s getting there. 😁

Anyway, I don’t care if it’s only August 27th it’s never too early to start getting spooky. πŸŽƒπŸ’€πŸ–€

Then while on my run I found $14 in a ditch! I find paper money when I run every once in a while and I always stop to pick it up, but $14 is the most I’ve found at one time!

Oh and my run did go pretty well today too. So that’s good.

After my run I submitted a resume and a copy of my ID to a job recruiter that my brother-in-law hooked me up with. He’s been helping me to *hopefully* get a job at the Clorox plant that he works with here in town.

But a few days ago I had also applied to a job at Garmin’s world headquarters that I just happened to see on a job board. I honestly didn’t think anything would actually come of it but then as I was submitting my resume to the other guy Garmin’s HR called me! And after answering a few questions I was able to set up an interview for September 3rd!! 😱

Holy cow you guys! I legitimately didn’t think that was going to go anywhere but now I have an interview with them!! I guess that just goes to show that it never hurts to just go for song and see what happens!

And all of that happened before 11 am! πŸ˜‚ After that my day was pretty uneventful, but after the great morning I had I’ll take it!!

I hope everyone else has had a fantastic Tuesday as well!

    Until next time,

    ~Ashley
