March Miles and Goal Check In

Happy first day of April!!!

Seriously though, wasn’t it just the first day of February like, 2 days ago?? πŸ˜‚

These last few months have just been flying by! My first race of 2019 is almost here! I almost can’t believe it! I’m getting pretty excited though! I don’t have any expectations for this race whatsoever, because it’s my first trail race, it’s at altitude, and I’m running it with my dad. That being said I actually feel pretty ready for it, even though I’ve literally done 0 trail running to prepare. πŸ˜‚

Anyway, I’m just gonna do a quick check in this month since I’m working on quite a few things this year and have already talked about most of them pretty thoroughly in other posts. So, let’s start off with my monthly mileage! 😊

87.92 miles run in March! Whoohoo!! I’m very happy with how my running has been going lately! I’ve really just been putting in the work and grinding it out! Sure it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows, but for the most part I’ve been feeling great! Getting in some pretty good speed workout, but mostly just getting in the miles. Honestly that is my biggest goal and focus for the year. Being consistent with my mileage and then slowly but surely upping it.

I’ve definitely been on the right track with that! These last two or three weeks have all been over 20 miles of running which is pretty darn good for me! I hit 24 last week and I’m super stoked about that! I’m hoping to hit 25 this week. 😁 After that though I plan on backing off just a bit, since that’ll be a race week. But seriously, I feel like I’m on a real roll right now! I’m currently at 243.46 miles run for the year and if I keep heading in this direction I should hit my goal of 1,000 miles in 2019 without too much trouble! 😊

Most of my other goals for 2019 really just revolve around keeping me healthy and injury free so I can run all of the miles I’m aiming for. πŸ˜‚ Things like doing my yoga (Check!), eating more healthy foods (Check!), getting enough sleep and recovery (check and check!), etc. Obviously that’s all working so far as I haven’t had any issues! That’s quite an accomplishment for this injury prone runner! πŸ˜‰

And of course I’m still focusing on my step goal! Running is one thing, but it can be kinda easy to run in the morning and then not move much for the rest of the day. πŸ˜‚ That’s why I like to have a step goal and to keep track of whether or not I hit it everyday, using the app “HabitBull”.

Hahaha I think it’s pretty obvious that I’ve been taking rest days of Friday’s and Sundays. πŸ˜‰ I’m not super thrilled that I went three days in a row without hitting my goal earlier this month, but after that I was pretty consistent and I’m very happy with that! 😊

Weekly Recap: March 25th-31st, 2019

This was a good week running-wise! Fantastic really! I felt good for the most part, got all of the miles in that I wanted to, and am just slowly but surely sneaking up my weekly/monthly mileage! 😊

While it was a good week as far as running goes, I really really skimped out on everything else. I did get a few yoga sessions in and even did a few foot drills, but I didn’t do any real cross training outside of walking my dogs and I didn’t do any strength training. πŸ˜‚ Oh well, I’m still happy with how this week went!

Monday:

  • 4 miles

Oh man, this was one of the hardest “easy” runs I’ve ever done!

Well, maybe not ever. But definitely in recent memory! πŸ˜‚ My legs were still tired from my 10 miler on Saturday but I managed to slog through this run. Getting my legs moving was probably the best thing I could have done for them anyway. 😁

Tuesday:

  • 3 miles
  • 20 minutes of yoga

My legs decided to cooperate with me on Tuesday! They were feeling much better. 😊

So I threw in some intervals just for fun. And it was fun. The weather was nice; warm but not oppressively hot, sunny, not too much wind. Sure I like winter running, but I do enjoy a warm sunny run every once in a while. πŸ˜„

Wednesday:

  • 5 miles

Caffeine, sarcasm, and inappropriate thoughts were the only thing that got me out the door Wednesday morning. πŸ˜‚

Seriously though, I really didn’t feel like running. I drug my feet getting dressed, getting to the door, walking out of the door, and then finally leaving my driveway. But I was eventually glad that I did this run. It ended up going well. Especially after the first mile or 2.

Thursday:

  • 2 miles

2 speedy miles for me!!

I had a dentist appointment that morning to get a permanent crown put on the tooth I’ve most recently gotten root canalled. So yay for having one more tooth finally take care of! I’ve still got a long way to go and more work that needs done, but we’re slowly getting there. As much as our insurance and finances allow anyway.

So, after my dentist appointment I was feeling good and ready to get moving but I also didn’t feel like doing a lot. So I busted out two nice and speedy miles. Like, much more speedy than I’ve run in a long time! Honestly it felt really good to just get out there and run with what was basically reckless abandon. I ended up in that fantastic “hurts so good” zone. But it also felt really good to stop after only 2 miles. It was exactly what I needed that day. 😊

Friday:

  • Rest day
  • 25 minutes of yoga

Friday may have been a rest day but it sure was a busy one! It feels like Luke and I had to go EVERYWHERE. πŸ˜‚

That evening I was finally kick back, relax with some tea, and do some nice and easy yoga. 😊

Saturday:

  • 10 miles

Oh boy! Saturday was a very very interesting day!

It rained off and on all day on Friday and that cooled things down quite a bit. The moisture continued on Saturday. First with snow. Yeah, snow!!! Which eventually turned to rain, then the wind started picking up….but by the end of the day the sun started to come out and it started warming up again. It was kinda crazy!

So my long run ends up being kinda crazy as well! I started with the snow which was ok, but once that turned into rain and the wind started picking up things started getting kinda miserable for me. I was soaked and freezing. I stopped at home once at about 4 miles to change my outermost layer of gear and then at about mile 8 I was very much over it. So I went home, changed into dry clothes, and did the last 2 miles on my treadmill. I got all 10 miles done though and I’m very proud of that! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜

Sunday:

  • Rest day

Ah Sunday! Sunday’s are my real days of rest! I usually don’t have to do much outside of my regular chores and I always try to sit down, relax, and not do much of anything. I also like to do things that she me feel good. Kinda pamper myself, ya know? ☺️

So today I did a hair/face mask, cleaned, filed, and painted my fingernails, tended to my toenails (I so t paint them usually. It’s kinda pointless because I’m always wearing socks. πŸ˜‚), and just sat back and did a lot of reading. It was really nice. Plus now my hair face and nails all look and feel fantastic! 😁

I think it’s super important to do things that make you feel good like that every once in a while. So that’s usually what I dedicate my Sundays to doing. 😊

Total Weekly Mileage: 24.12

As long as I keep this up there is no way that I won’t hit my goal of running 1,000 miles in 2019! Hahaha I know it’s still pretty early in the year and a lot can happen in the next 9 months, but as long as I stay healthy and injury free I don’t see any other reason why o won’t be able to keep this up and hopefully increase my weekly mileage even more!

Okey Dokey then! I believe that pretty much covers everything from this week! Like I said, even though I did no strength or cross training, I’m happy with how it went.

Now I’ve just gotta get through next week and then I’ll be off to Colorado to spend some time with my dad and siblings, and to run my very first trail race! I’m getting super excited about all of that! It’s going to be lots and lots of fun!

Thursday Things

Ashley’s continuing saga of slowly but surely getting her terrible teeth taken care of had yet another chapter today! (Yeah, I don’t know why I’m talkings I’m 3rd person. I’m gonna stop now. πŸ˜‚)

My 3rd root canal is officially finished as of this morning! I went to the dentist again and I got the temperature crown taken off, the permanent crown put on, and a regular cleaning for good measure. πŸ˜„ I’ve still got more work that needs done on my teeth. Like a lot. But at least I’m one step closer to having a healthier mouth. Plus this time I didn’t need 8 million shots of novocaine so I left this dental appointment with feeling in my face. That was definitely nice. πŸ˜‚

I’m glad that’s done. Maybe later this year I’ll get some more work on my teeth done. It really just depends on how much insurance Luke and I have left and if we’re able to save up some more money for it. Oh man don’t even get me started on how terrible the health care/dental care system in the US is just completely fucked. Because it is…

Anyway, let’s talk about some more sun stuff shall we? 😊

So, my chickens are laying much much much more consistently now! Obviously that’s to be expected as they’re much more mature now and now that the weather is getting warmer and the days a little longer. But it’s still pretty exciting!!

Right now I have about 2 and a half dozen eggs. We are officially at the point that we aren’t able to eat a of the eggs that they’re laying. I’ve given some to my brother-in-law and to my neighbors, but at this point I think I could start selling some. Luke isn’t sure that we actually have enough chickens for that, but I don’t see why we couldn’t sell a carton of eggs every week or so. Obviously that’s not a lot, but hey, it’s something!

I plan on bringing some to Colorado to my dad and brother when I go there. That’s coming up soon! I’ll be headed there in around 10 or 11 days. Something like that. πŸ˜‰

My dad has planned out some hikes he wants to take me on and then that weekend we’ll be doing our trail race! We’re both pretty excited about that! Even though I think it’s gonna be a total suffer fest. πŸ˜‚ The course description includes phrases like “steep hills”, “rocky gully”, and “rugged Jeep trail”. Yeah, I’m not sure how this road runner is gonna handle all of that. Plus the whole being at altitude thing. That’s definitely not going to help. Still though, it’ll be a good time and the mountain views should be totally worth it! 😁

The view of Long’s Peak (I think? I’m probably wrong) from near where my dad lives. This isn’t where the race is though, it’s actually 5 hours away from here. πŸ˜‚ But it’s supposed to be super pretty there too.

So yeah, I’m pretty excited to hang out with my dad, brother, and their Russian bear dog, Niko. Maybe even my sisters too if we have time! They live about 2 hours away from my dad and brother in Colorado. I don’t get to see them very often since they all live 11 hours away from Luke and I.

Hahaha last time I stayed with my dad Niko was super excited to see me, but at night he wouldn’t let me sleep on the couch in the living room! That asshole would just stare at me and growl. One night he even cornered me in the kitchen. Having a 140 pound dog corner you like that is kinda scary. Pretty much every night I was there my brother had to come save me and then let me sleep in his room. πŸ˜‚ Niko’s just weird. πŸ™„ He can be sweet though.

Anyway, I’ll keep you all updated on my next set of Colorado adventures as they come! 😊

So yeah, that’s pretty much what’s going on in my world at the moment. Nothing too terribly exciting yet, but that’s life sometimes. More exciting stuff is on the way though. Obviously I’ve got the trail race coming up soon. In May I’ve got a 5k to look forward to, along with starting our garden. Hopefully it’ll do better this year than it did last year! But last summer was pretty brutal as far as weather goes. It was crazy hot and we barely had any rain and my poor garden suffered because of it. But I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what this year brings.

As far as running goes I’ve just been kinda grinding away. If you keep up with my weekly recaps you probably already knew that. πŸ˜‰ I haven’t been doing anything glamorous or sexy, but oh man I feel like I’m making some real progress! I feel like I’m running stronger and more constantly than I ever have before! It’s a really awesome feeling. I think 2019 is already shaping up to be a great year for me! Well, running-wise at least. We’ll see about the rest of it.

I can’t really go into too much detail about certain things, but life has just been kinda crazy. Weird things are going on with my family. And just…I don’t know. Things I can’t talk about here. It’s just kinda messy. But life can be that way sometimes. Inevitable it’ll get worked through, one way or another.

Alrighty then! Not exactly a super duper awesome place to end things, but that’s all I’ve got for today! πŸ˜‚

Weekly Recap: March 18th-24th, 2019

Hills, tank top weather, a super moon, yoga, sunshine, a little bit of rain, a double digit run, and over 20 running miles! This week has it all and more!

Monday:

  • 3 treadmill miles
  • 10 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 20 minutes of strength training

Hills hills hills!!!

KILLED my quads on the treadmill on Monday. I want to be ready for my upcoming trail 10k in April, so I figure I need to squeeze in a few more hill sessions. 😊

After powering up some hills on the treadmill I cooled down a little bit on my stationary bike. Later in the day I continue the leg torture with a 20 minute leg workout. I like to think Monday was a successful day.

Tuesday:

  • 3 miles

It’s tank top weather!!

Not gonna lie, I’m not exactly stoked about that. I kinda already miss winter. πŸ˜‚ Where are my cold weather peeps at??

I was, however, pretty darn excited about how well this run went! I absolutely KILLED my legs on Monday. So they were super sore and understandably so when I woke up on Tuesday. But I was glad to find that even so my body responded well and even wanted a little more, even though my legs were tired and sore. It was a super fun run. It was also a hard run. Probably shouldn’t have done that after a hard day on Monday, but I was just having too much fun. πŸ˜„

I had good intentions of doing yoga later in the day, but I ended up babysitting my neighbor’s kid and that just never happened. Oh well.

Wednesday:

  • 4 miles

4 “easy” miles done in the morning. They sure didn’t feel easy though. πŸ˜‚ The original plan was to do 6, but yeah, no. DOMS was REAL on Wednesday. Not really surprising though.

Anyway, Wednesday was the first day of spring and a full moon! Everyone was calling it a super moon but I honestly have no idea what the whole super moon thing is about. It seems like we have a “super moon” every month now. Whatever, the moon still looked incredible Wednesday evening. I took Lily and then Whiskey (I don’t walk my dogs together, they gang up on me if I do. πŸ˜‚), so I got to see it as the sun went down and the moon came up. Pictures never do it justice though.

Thursday:

  • 2 miles
  • 15 minute arm workout
  • 20 minutes of yoga

Thursday’s easy 2 miles actually felt easy! πŸ˜‚ Seriously though, that was nice. Followed that up with a little arm workout and then yoga later in the day. Honestly it wasn’t an eventful day, but it was a good one. 😊

Friday:

  • Rest Day

An impromptu rest day on Friday because oh boy was I tired!! 😴

Honestly though it was more of an active rest day. My little next door neighbor came over to “hang out” (i.e. her mom needed me to babysit her πŸ˜‰) around 12:30 that afternoon. So we walked to the park, played on a rock wall, swing set, and monkey bars, then we walked back home and watched Gravity Falls until Luke came home. Then we all played outside a little bit, had pizza for dinner, and finally got rid of my favorite 5 year old neighbor around 6:40 pm. She had fun though, so that’s all that matters.

Saturday:

  • 10 miles

First double digit run since the Gobbler Grind Half in November! πŸ₯³ I’ve been enjoying my 8 mile long runs, but it’s long past time for me to start building them up!

Well, for now at least. I’ve got at least two more that I’d like to do before the trail 10k my dad and I are doing April 14th. After that I’m not sure if I’m gonna jump back into training pretty much where I left off, or if I’m gonna take a week or two a little bit easier and then build up from there. It really depends on how I feel once it’s all said and done. Sure it’s only a 10k, but it’s a 10k in the mountains and going from almost 1,000 feet above sea level to around 5,000 feet is hard! πŸ˜‚ Plus my dad is already planning some hikes he wants to take me on while I’m in Colorado, so really who knows how I’ll feel when I get back to Kansas. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

I’ve got my training plan written out all the way up to the race and then like I said, I’ll just figure it all out after that’s all said and done.

So, I’ve been writing my own training plan so far this year and honestly it’s going great! Better than any training plan I’ve done up until this point! It’s pretty sweet actually! I know some people don’t like having to think about what workouts and runs they need to do, but I kinda like piecing it all together for myself!

This is actually probably a whole other post for a different day, so for now I’ll leave it at that.😊

Sunday:

  • Rest day

It’s weird how adding two more miles to a long run can make you so much more tired. πŸ˜‚

When you think about it, two miles really isn’t a lot, but for whatever reason going from 8 miles to 10 miles feels like a big jump. At least I think it does! So today I felt a little bit more tired than usual since I did add those two more miles to my long run. Although I definitely don’t feel as beat up as I once would have! Just a little bit sore and tired. It’s pretty cool how you can gauge how far you’ve come based on how sore your legs feel the next day. πŸ˜‚

But really, there was a time when 10 miles would just completely wreck me. I’m definitely not wrecked today though! A little low on energy, but otherwise good! 😊

Total Weekly Mileage: 22

Woohoo! Another 20+ mile training week! Honestly I would have liked to have gotten to 24 miles this week, but I ended up cutting my run on Wednesday a little short. Not a big deal really. I’m still happy with the fact that I went over 20 miles for the week. I’m slowly but surely working my way up!

Alrighty! That’s a wrap for this week! I’ve got two more full weeks of training and then it’s off to Colorado for a week and then my first race of 2019 on April 14th!

Weekly Recap: March 11th-17th, 2019

Well this week turned out to be a pretty good one as far as running, training, actually doing some cross training, and whatnot goes! Mother Nature sure brought a few surprises this week as well, but all-in-all it was a good one!

So let’s get right into it!

Monday:

  • 3 miles on the treadmill
  • 15 minutes on the stationary bike

Did someone speed work on the treadmill to kick off my week! Warmed up with 10 minutes on the stationary bike, did an easy mile on the treadmill, followed by some hard intervals, really focusing on my form, and then an easy half mile cool down, and finally 5 more minutes on the stationary bike.

It was a hard workout, but a good one!! Haha I had a very cute spectator and ran the first few minutes of my easy mile without shoes, just because it felt good not to. πŸ˜„

Anyway, Luke and I cleaned out our extra bedroom and put the treadmill, stationary bike, and other various exercise equipment. We’ve dubbed it the “exercise room” and let me tell ya, it’s pretty sweet having a room dedicated to exercise stuff! It definitely makes actually cross training easier! 😊

Tuesday:

  • 3 easy miles

Holy moly my legs were tired after Monday’s speed work. That coupled with the wind we were experiencing made this run TOUGH. It was a super, slow slog, and I wanted to quit the whole time. But I finished it and I know I’m better for it. 😊

Anyway, it’s definitely starting to feel like spring here in Kansas! It’s getting warmer and windy and I’d say it was getting wet, but we actually had a super wet winter. πŸ˜‚ But it’s looking like we’re gonna have a wet spring as well.

Wednesday:

  • 5.43 miles
  • downed tree stuff

We had wind gusts of up to 50-60 mph on Wednesday. That made for a very interesting day…

Started my day off in my usual way, with a run. 😊I got poured on during the first half of this run! That was a lot of fun!! Although at on point an older gentleman pulled up next to me in his car and offered to take me anywhere I wanted to go. I told him I was alright and politely declined. I know this guy probably had nothing but good intentions, but still, even if I wasn’t having a good time I wouldn’t just get into a car with a stranger like that.

Anyway, the wind really started picking up around the second half of this run. It started getting really bad so I ended up cutting this run a little short. Hahaha I’m good with that though. Running in that wind 5.43 miles should basically count for 6 miles anyway. πŸ˜‰

Later that afternoon we had a tree get blown down onto a power line. Yeah, not good. But thanks to the help of a few neighbors we got it down safely. You can read all about those adventures here, if you’d like. πŸ˜‰

Thursday:

  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 20 minutes of strength work

Cross train day yay!! Hahaha worked on my kinda wimpy arms after taking a little spin on the stationary bike on Thursday. Followed that up with a little bit of head stand practice just for fun. πŸ™ƒ

Friday:

  • 3.25 miles

Busy busy day!! Didn’t get my run in Friday morning like I usually would. I managed to squeeze it in that afternoon. It was a good one! 😊

It would appear that spring is finally here in Kansas! It was kinda weird, one day it was winter but then the next it was spring. πŸ˜‚ And it’s looking like it’s actually here to stay! We’re supposed to get highs in the 60’s next week. Anyone ready for me to start complaining about the warm weather? Because it’s coming.πŸ˜‚

Saturday:

  • 8 miles
  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 20 minutes stretching/foam rolling

Oh man, that 8 mile run Saturday morning was an absolute grind. I got through it somehow though! πŸ’ͺπŸ»πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈ

That night my brother-in-law came over and brought his PlayStation that he set up on our second tv, so he and my husband spent the night playing Call Of Duty with their dad and one of their brother’s. I ain’t about that PlayStation life, so while they were doing that I ended up spending some time on our newly set up workout room! Spent some time on my stationary bike and doing some stretching and foam rolling while Lily watched. πŸ˜‚ Then after that I just binge watched more Law and Order SVU until 2 am when my brother-in-Law went home and we finally went to bed. Hahaha I’m not exactly a fan of staying up that late anymore, at least not often, but there was no way I was gonna to be able to sleep with all of that noise they were making. πŸ˜‚

Sunday:

  • Rest day

Spent the day, resting, relaxing, and letting my week of training seep in. πŸ˜„

Total Weekly Mileage: 22.77

Just barely missed the 23 miles I was aiming for! πŸ˜‚ Honestly though that’s close damn enough for me! I’m very happy with how well this week of running went and how easily I was able to jump back into the swing of things after being sick last week. πŸ˜„

At this point we’re about a month out from the trail race my dad and I are doing in Colorado! I got the racer’s guide via email a few days ago and looking at that elevation chart again kinda freaked me out! I’m going to be going from about 1,000 feet above sea level which is where I live to almost 5,000 feet at certain points of this race. There are definitely some hills. Yikes!

Good thing we’re the “Sloth Running Team” and are going to take our time and get there when we get there. πŸ˜‚

Still though, it’s gonna be a tough day! But probably lots of fun! I’m definitely looking forward to it!

March 13th, 2019

Well today was an eventful day!!

It would appear that spring has finally arrived here in Kansas and its brought it’s usual crazy winds with it.

I’d say it also brought the usual wet weather as well, but we actually had a super wet winter so really that’s nothing new at this point. πŸ˜‚ Although we’ve gotten our first couple of spring thunderstorms already. That usually doesn’t happen in the winter. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, kicked off my day in my usual way with a run. I got poured on during the first half which was a lot of fun! I do love me a nice rainy run!! Hahaha at one point though an older gentleman drove up to me in his car, rolled his window down and asked me if I wanted to get out of the rain, and said that he’d be willing to take me anywhere I needed to go. I told him I was fine and politely declined. I’m sure this guy had no ill intentions, but still, I’d never risk getting into a car with a stranger like that. It’s just too risky…

Anyway, rain let up a little bit during the second half of my run and the wind started to really pick up. We got gusts around 50-60 mph today and oh boy were those tough to run in!! I wanted to go 6 miles today but I was just absolutely done with the wind and cut it a little short. I ended up getting in 5.43 miles. Close enough. πŸ˜‰

Wind is not the only bane of my existence this time of year. Oh no! Spring brings wind and dog hair. Lots and lots of dog hair…. Shedding season is in full force. I feel like a good chunk of my time is spent vacuuming up dog hair. Sweeping up dog hair. Picking up dog hair. And brushing dog hair. Fun times. πŸ˜‚

So in the photo below you can see a nice pile of dog hair. That’s all from a 35 pound dog who had a bath yesterday and who had been brushed once before today. So. Much. Dog hair!

Honestly though the dog hair situation isn’t too terrible. It could be a lot worse, especially considering that we have 4 dogs! πŸ˜‰

The wind situation today did, however, end up becoming a huge problem today. Even more so that me just having to run in it!

We had this tree in our backyard, right? And it was pretty much completely dead. We knew we needed to cut it down, but tree removal is expensive and we’ve never really had the tools or manpower to do it ourselves. But on the bright side, the wind took care of that for us today! On the not-so-bright side, the tree landed on the power line that runs to our house as well as an old cable line that it kinda knocked down. That wasn’t a problem though. That one wasn’t doing anything anymore. But it was also on our neighbor’s internet line. Luckily it wasn’t touching his power line too.

Luckily our neighbors are all really awesome, and my brother-in-Law decided to randomly drop by our house. So the brother-in-law of the neighbor who’s kid I babysit works for an electrical company and happened to have a pole saw. Luke just wanted to ask him a few questions, but he offered to help. And then of course the neighbor who’s yard the tree was hanging into helped as well.

Luckily we got it down without any issues! No one got electrocuted and the tree didn’t fall onto the new fence which is great! Now we have a huge tree trunk in our yard that we need to clean up, but at least it’s off the power line and didn’t do any real damage!

Yeah, it’s been a weird day. πŸ˜‚ But at least that’s all taken care of now! Hopefully this wind dies down soon and nothing else ends up happening!

My Most Important Pieces Of Running Gear

Notice anything missing from this list? Running shoes, right? I mean, aren’t those literally the most important piece of running gear after all? And then after that a good sports bra, right?

Both of those things are super important, but here’s the thing, we all know that at this point! I mean, look at Runner’s World. At this point the magazine is 90% shoe ads. I stopped subscribing after they got a new editor and chief, but I’ve heard it’s just been going downhill ever since. But they aren’t the only company constantly telling us that we need shoes. Shoes shoes shoes shoes. Runners need their running shoes! Alright. We get it!

But I personally believe that finding the right running shoe for yourself is a very personal thing. Everyone’s feet, body, running stride, etc, are different. Therefore the perfect running shoe for someone else might be an injury waiting to happen for you!

So yes, maybe do a little bit of research before buying a pair of running shoes, but the best possible thing you can do is try on a variety of brands and styles. Run around in them a little bit at the store, and then just kinda hope that they’ll end up working for you. And if not, try again. I know that sounds like a lot of trial and error, but I really believe that’s the best way to figure out what’s going to work the best for you. You can also go to a reputable and trustworthy running specialty store, but take whatever they tell you with a grain of salt. Yes, they want to help you, but at the end of the day no one knows your feet and your body like you do.

Also if you have a particular shoe that works for you, don’t let anyone convince you that you’re wrong! I’m looking at you, people who say you can’t run long distances in Nike Frees!!

And don’t even get me started on sports bras. There is a lot wrong with that particular part of the athletic wear industry right now. I can’t find anything that isn’t super heavy duty that feels like you’re clipping yourself into a straight jacket, that has no pads or underwire (I get why some people like padded sports bras, but I hate them), or that had a bottom band that digs into and chafes the rib cage. I’ve seen women who end up bleeding pretty badly from these terrible sports bra bands. Nike used to make THE PERFECT sports bra for me, but they don’t anymore and I’m so freaking pissed! It’s been YEARS since I’ve had a sports bra that was actually comfortable…

But anyway. That’s why sports bras are also not on this list.

Hahaha oh wow. I really didn’t mean for that to turn into a rant like that. It just kinda happened. πŸ˜‚ But really I think someone needed to say it.

So, let’s get into a more positive track, shall we?

Obviously I’ve got a bone to pick with certain areas of the running gear/athletic wear industry, but there are actually quite a few brands and products out there that I love, trust, and believe in! Which is great because obviously running gear is fun! But it can also make or break your workout (I’m looking at you, terrible sports bras!), help you keep track of your training, progress, time, mileage, mile splits, or whatever, keep you comfortable in certain weather conditions, help keep you safe, provide you with a little extra piece of mind, or just make you feel like a total badass. Which is also super important!

So, today I wanted to share what I would consider to be my most important pieces of running gear. Obviously if asked, most runners would give you different answers as to what their most important gear is because we’re all different and need and want different things! How awesome is that?! 😊 But for me, these are a few of the things I just can’t live without when it comes to running.

ROAD iD

Safety first, my friends!!

My ROAD iD contains my name, birth year, blood type, and emergency contact. All things that could definitely come in handy in case of an emergency. Plus having all of that right on my wrist means I don’t have to carry my ID or anything else with me while I run, which is nice. πŸ˜„

At this point I WILL NOT run without my ROAD iD. Heck, I rarely ever take it off! It just gives me so much peace of mind knowing that if something were to ever happen to me my husband would be contacted right away. I seriously think everyone should have one!

Garmin Fenix 5

I am a run by feel kinda gal, so I actually don’t pay a lot of attention to or get distracted by the paces that my Garmin is constantly providing me. Which is a problem that some people run into on occasion and something that can become a bit of an issue.

But, since it’s not a problem for me I always run wearing my Garmin Fenix 5. It’s a super fancy GPS watch and I do enjoy all of the data it can provide me, the biggest thing I’m looking for is my mileage. Yup, I’m the kind of person who can’t end a run at 4.8 miles even if I’m standing right in front of my house (and even though I know that GPS watches aren’t 100% accurate). But keeping track of my mileage is super important to me. It’s how I know if I’m being consistent and actually working hard instead of just phoning it in. Some people can measure that with time, but I prefer miles. Everything else that my Fenix 5 can do is just an added bonus. πŸ˜„

Oiselle Pocket Jogger Capris

You guys, the pants CHANGED MY LIFE!!!!!

I know that’s a little dramatic. πŸ˜‚ But seriously, the amount of pockets on running gear is too damn low!! I don’t need to carry much with me on my runs, but at the very least I like a pocket that my phone will fit in along with a few other pockets that I can keep fuel and chapstick in. But I literally never had that until these pants came into my life. I LOVE them. Now I just need to get the Pocket Jogger Shorts! Not one pair of my running shorts contains enough pockets.

I do have photos of my pair of pocket jogger capris, but they aren’t as good as this one from Oiselle’s website. πŸ˜‰

Trucker Hats

Oh trucker hats! Where would I be without you?!?

Gagging and choking on my hair, and constantly trying to keep my bangs out of my eyes, probably. πŸ˜‚

Trucker hats are an absolute MUST for me during the warmer months. I have what I affectionately refer to as a “choppy hair cut”. There are multiple layers, bangs, it’s kinda long, messy, and nothing is the same length. It can be hard to contain. πŸ˜‚ Even braids and headbands can’t keep it all out of my way. But trucker hats help without holding in too much heat thanks to their mesh backs. Plus I like to have some kind of brimmed hat anyway to keep the sun/wind/rain/who knows what out of my eyes if need be. πŸ˜„

Moisture Wicking Socks

Honestly the brand and style don’t matter much to me. Sometimes I wear compression socks. Sometimes I don’t. As long as my socks keep me feet from getting too sweaty and gross then I’m good to go!

The thing is, one time in my early days as a runner I forgot to switch into moisture wicking socks. It was a miserable experience for my poor, sweaty feet and I have never and probably will never make that same mistake again. I always double check my feet before I hit the pavement, just to be sure that I did indeed put on a pair of my running socks. πŸ˜‚

I’m a simple girl with simple needs. Aside from my Garmin I really don’t have any super duper fancy gear. Obviously there is nothing wrong with having the latest/expensive/technologically advanced/super spiffy gear. But I like to remind people that while all of that stuff can be fun, you really don’t need much to start running. That’s one of the cool things about this sport! It really doesn’t take fancy equipment. You just need a pair of shoes that work for you and whatever allows you to move comfortably over however many miles you want to cover.
