Treadmill Running

I started out my running journey almost 5 years ago on a treadmill in my old apartment complexes fitness center, but once I started running on the paved trail that was near by, I ditched the treadmill and never looked back. In that time I’ve forgotten a little something about myself; I’m super duper awkward on treadmills!

So just going back a little bit, last weekend Luke and I went to Illinois for one of his brother’s high school graduation party. While we were there we picked up my sister’s old treadmill from her boyfriend’s mom’s house. My sister (actually, both of my sister’s, my brother, and both of my parents) live in Colorado now. It would have been more expensive for her to rent a truck and drive all the way to Illinois just to get it, and since she knew Luke just recently bought a new truck, she told me that we could take it. And that, my friends, is how I ended up getting a $600 treadmill for free. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_2642

Originally I wasn’t going to take the treadmill. “I’m a road runner!” I told myself, “I pride myself in running in ALL OF THE WEATHER CONDITIONS!” And that is true, but in the summer months I always end up runningย a lot less and basically not doing any kind of speed work, because I do not do well in the heat. It absolutely drains me and my running kinda suffers because of it. So after thinking about that for a while, I figured why not take the treadmill? I could probably utilize it in a way to supplement my outdoor running and actually do some speed work in the summer! So at this point I’m pretty stoked to have it. Even though it’s kinda huge and taking up a lot of room in my living room haha.

Anyway, back to my original point. I run weird on treadmills. And I’ve kinda forgotten about that little fact until now. Once I had started running on that trail back in the apartment days I realized how natural treadmill running felt to me. I also realized how quickly I tore shoes up while running on a treadmill. Once I started running on asphalt my shoes started lasting me a lot longer. Probably because running on a revolving belt is just naturally going to wear them out faster, but also because my running gait is just super awkward while moving on said revolving belt and I’ve never been able to get into a good rhythm on one. And honestly I probably never will.

So I’ve only run twice since Sunday when we brought this thing home. Both runs were on the treadmill and both runs felt super weird. Now, I know I’m slow, but a little simple math told me that my Garmin wasn’t reading correctly with that first run on Monday and that I was going somewhere around a 13:30 pace and not a 15 minute per mile pace. Haha that was a huge relief! Because that first run felt HARD! So I’m not actually sure about the distance on this run. I’m not all that worried about it though, I figured out how to calibrate my watch to the treadmill and it was pretty close to what the treadmill was reading on Tuesday. Still not sure how accurate the treadmill is, but I’m just gonna roll with it haha.

img_2651

First treadmill run in a very long time on Monday!

You might notice in the photo above that I’m not wearing any shoes. Haha remember how I said I tear shoes up while running on the treadmill? Yeah, I don’t want to be doing that right now. You see, I’m down to one pair of running shoes (I just had to retire my current pair of Nike Free’s. It was a sad day), my Nike Pegasus and they’re getting close to being halfway through their running life with me. I can usually get about 300 ish miles out of a pair of shoes before they have to retire to my “everyday” shoes, and then I can usually wear them for about another year before I have to get rid of them. It’s a good system for me. ๐Ÿ™‚ But anyway, since I’m down to one pair of running shoes and currently not able to spend $100 to get a new pair (that whole trip to Illinois, our up coming family vacation that Luke’s mom has been planning, and having to pay bills, buy food, and other adult stuff like that is really slowing the whole getting new running shoes thing down). So in order to preserve my current pair of shoes I’ve done both of my runs this week in my socks!!

(Just a little side note here guys, I have a ko-fi account now! You might have notice the “Buy Me A Coffee” button on the side of my blog. I actually spent a lot of time thinking about whether or not I should join ko-fi, because I didn’t want anyone to think I was like, begging for money or anything. And I’m totally not! But you know, I do work pretty hard on this blog and my other social media accounts. I put myself out there and share my story in some pretty up close and personal ways. So I figured why not give people a way to show me some love and support in the small way of “buying me a coffee” if they want to. And if they don’t, no big deal and no hard feelings. It’s not like I started this blog to make boatloads of money. Although I’d be lying if I said that wouldn’t be nice. ๐Ÿ˜‰ But anyway, just thought I’d throw that out there really quick. I probably wont be bringing it up much though.)

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

So anyway, in order to preserve the life of my remaining pair of running shoes, I’ve done both of my runs this week in just my socks. I figured it wouldn’t be that big of a deal though. As kids my sisters and I would run around the farm barefoot all the time. We’d walk around corn fields, cow pastures, the woods, our gravel driveway, and even ride our bikes all sans shoes, and it was great!! And it’s not like I wear shoes all the time anyway. Nowadays I always walk around my house in just socks. I ride my stationary bike barefoot, tend to my garden barefoot or in flip flops or rubber boots (so, shoes that basically have no support whatsoever). I’ve even played tennis and helped Luke practice for softball either barefoot or in socks. Haha we’ve actually discoverd that I pitch better without shoes on! Although that’s probably just a weird coincidence, but now whenever we got out to the softball fields and there’s no home plate out we just use my shoes because I’m a-ok with not wearing them haha.

img_2452

P.S. I’m totally in love with my Zensah watermelon compression socks!!ย ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿ˜„[/[/[/[/[/[/

I’ve also got an affinity for minimalist shoes. Hence why I love Nike Free’s so much. Don’t get me wrong, I love myย Pegasus. They’re a great training shoe and a good way for me to switch things up a little bit, but I wont do races in them haha. Compared to the Free’s they just feel heavy to me. I don’t even like wearing them on long runs, but I do because I know it’s good for me. But anyway, since I’m quite often barefoot, or wearing socks or minimalist shoes, I figured my feet, ankles, and legs would be strong enough to do my treadmill running in just my socks. But I think I might have overdone it a bit yesterday. I ran 4 miles on the treadmill, very awkwardly because like I said, treadmill running is weird and hard, in just my socks. I’m not hurt or injured or anything, but my calves are just super tight today! My guess is from running super duper awkwardly on the treadmill two days in a row and now wearing shoes probably didn’t help.

img_2684

Haha yesterday I actually spent those 4 miles watching part of a full Green Day concert on YouTube. I have no idea how people can go to a concert and record the whole thing! I’m too busy singing and dancing to even consider taking decent pictures, let along record a video! But I am incredibly grateful to the people who do! Haha yesterday’s 4 miles flew by thanks to whoever recorded this concert! I find treadmill running to be incredibly boring, so I never thought I’d say treadmill miles just flew by! So that was really nice!! But like I said, I woke up with super tight calves today, so I figured I needed to rest them and stretch them, so that’s been my goal for today.

I actually wanted to run outside today. The weather has been a little less hot thanks to some rain we have in the forecast, so it would have been nice to take it outside today. But my tight calves are making my heels hurt a little bit. I’ve dealt with plantarย fasciitis before (and ironically I got it from running in a pair of shoes that were waaay to supportive for my feet. I have very high arches and I’ve found the less support a shoe has, the better!) and I definitely didn’t want to go through all of that again, so I figured taking the day off and getting my calves to loosen up a bit was obviously the better option. So I spent about 30 minutes on my yoga mat doing just that. I still felt a little tight, but a lot better after that!

img_2690

So I’m hoping tomorrow they feel even better and I’ll be able to run on them. The weather forecast is saying that it’s supposed to be in the 60’s and cloudy with a chance of rain, so I’d like to run in that before it starts getting hot and gross again!! But once it does, at least I’ll have the treadmill as an option. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve also got another dentist appointment tomorrow to get my permanent crowns put on. So hopefully that all goes well. But that is all I’ve got for now, so happy hump day everyone!

Thursday Things

Woke up early this morning, briefly considered doing my run, very quickly decided โ€œfuck thatโ€, and went back to bed. Haha I was just really tired. ๐Ÿ˜‰ But I only had an easy 2 mile run planned for today, so I figured skipping it wasnโ€™t a big deal.

Once I did finally get up I ended up spend way too much time scrolling through all of my social media. Jeez that is a really good way to lose a good chunk of your time haha. But I did get to see a few of the cows that are going to be hanging out at the Running With The Cows starting line area and I was pretty excited about that! How adorable are these two?!? Iโ€™m very excited about seeing them on Saturday!

img_1572

Obviously this isnโ€™t my photo. I screen shot it from the Running With The Cows facebook page.ย

Luckily I didnโ€™t end up wasting my whole day on the social media. Thatโ€™s crazy easy to do haha! Eventually I got up and got some stuff done. I cleaned the ferret cage while they ran around for a while, and then did some stuff in the garden. Mostly just watered it, but I pulled out a few weeds too haha. Everything out there is looking pretty good right now though! Before too long weโ€™re gonna have a bunch of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, eggs, and all sorts of other good stuff. ๐Ÿ™‚ Iโ€™m very excited about that!

After the ferret cage was clean and the garden was watered I took Lily and then Dean for a walk, worked on a few blog posts, started some laundry and general tiding of the house, and then I sat down with another cup of coffee and the book Cujo. Can you believe this is legit the first time Iโ€™ve read Cujo?!? Stephen King is my all time favorite Author and he has been since I was in like, 7th grade. The first ever โ€œgrown upโ€ book I read was The Stand. 2 whole shelves on my huge book shelf are dedicated to and are absolutely overflowing with his books. But still, this is the first time Iโ€™ve read Cujo haha. But I mean, Iโ€™ve seen the movie about 8 billion times so I always reached for anther one of his books whenever I would go to get one. Iโ€™ve also never read Carrie or Pet Sematary. Pretty crazy, right? But again, Iโ€™ve seen both of those movies about 8 billion times as well. But since Iโ€™ve finally gotten around to Cujo Iโ€™ll eventually get to Carrie and Pet Sematary as well. I mean, the book is always better than the movie anyway. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Weekly Recap: March 12th-18th, 2018

I’ve been back home for a two weeks now, the 5k that my dad andย  I did together was a success, and now I’m pretty much back to scheduled programming. I’m training for my next 5k in May, making plans for my garden, farming chickens, and handling 3 border collies. So you know, same old same old. ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday:

  • Rest Day

I usually try to take my rest days on Sunday, but since the Whiskey run was on Sunday I just moved that to Monday. So Monday was pretty uneventful, but my spiffy new Zensah compression sleeves got here, so there’s that. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_0314-1.jpg

Tuesday:

  • Easy 2 miles
  • 15 minutes of strength work

Nothing exciting or fancy on Tuesday. Just doing thing that need to be done.

img_0349

Wednesday:ย

  • 10 minute warm up on the stationary bike
  • 4 miles

Running is hard…

Seriously did not want to do this run on Wednesday, but I got out there and muddled through it. Barely haha. But I did it and that’s all that matters, right?

img_0366-1

Thursday:

  • Rest Day

Nope nope nope nope nope nope nope.

I woke up feeling like shit on Thursday. I was crazy sore, tired, and just gross feeling all around, even though I really hadn’t done anything all week to warrant feeling that way. So I skipped my run and opted to walk the dogs and do some yoga instead. I’m still not entirely sure if I should have just muddled through another run or not. But I mostly think my body was trying to tell me something and that I might have avoided an illness or injury by opting out of Thursday’s run. Either way though, it didn’t get done.

But on the bright side, my Honey Stinger order came on Thursday and I got to try out one of the new Almond butter/dark chocolate snack bars! They. Are. Amazing!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Friday:

  • Walked around the dog park

Well, and spent the whole day running around like crazy trying to get some stuff done haha! Luke’s Friday’s off (he gets a Friday off of work every other week), tend to be like that though. The day started off super rainy and chilly so we weren’t actually sure if we were gonna be able to get the dogs to the park, which was something we desperately wanted to do! So we ended up going to several stores in the mall, and the to Scheels looking for new everyday shoes for Luke and running tights for me. Luke and I are kind of die hard Nike people haha, but we’ve both been a bit disappointed by them lately. They’ve seemed to have done away with Nike Shox (Luke loves them for some reason. I think they’re super uncomfortable and not at all sad to see them go haha). Eventually he did find another pair of Nike’s that he likes though. My problem is the seem to have done away with my favorite kind of running tights. I’ve been looking everywhere for them or something similar for going on 2 years now, but nope, it’s looking like they’ve done away with them as well. Sad face… After being super disappointed at several stores, Luke told me that maybe I should try something new, so I ended up ordering a pair of Oiselle pocket jogger capris. This is the first Oiselle item I’ve ever purchased, so I’m pretty excited for them to get here and see what they’re all about. Plus I’ve always said running gear never has enough pockets, so these capris should solve that issue for me! So. Many. Pockets!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, after our shopping adventures it had gotten a lot nicer outside and the rain had mostly dissipated, so we took the dogs to the park, did some errands, then had my brother-in-law, his girlfriend, and her 2 kids over for dinner. Haha it was a very busy/eventful day.

Saturday:

  • 30 minutes of yoga

Oh man, my stomach was not happy with me on Saturday. I’m not entirely sure what that was all about, but it probably had something to do with the fact that I have not been eating very well lately. Obviously I need to work on that. So I kept it super easy and did 30 minutes of restorative yoga on Saturday. That ended up feeling really nice. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_0434

Sunday:

  • 20 minutes on the stationary bike

Ugh, Lily and Finn kept Luke and I up all freaking night…That was a whole thing. I had planned on getting in a few miles at the very least today, but after last night’s fiasco that wasn’t going to happen. I always read/hear that after a shitty night of sleep you should go run because it’ll make you feel better, but try telling that to tired, cranky Ashley. Nope, not worth it in her opinion.

So, dyed my hair, cleaned the house, and spent a little bit of time on the stationary bike instead.

So yeah. This was a weird week. Sometimes running kinda gets in the way of life but this week life kinda got in the way of running. It happens and I’m not too worried about it. I have a feeling that next week will be better. ๐Ÿ™‚

I hope everyone has had a good weekend!

Weekly Recap: January 29th – February 4th, 2018

So I may or may not have gotten a little bit distraced last night and didn’t get around to posting my weekly recap. Oops.

But in all fairness, I think most American’s were a little bit distracted last night by the big football thing. Haha not gonna lie, I’m not at all interested. I just watch for the commercials. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyways, lets get on with it then!

Monday:

  • 4 miles

Kinda really didn’t want to do this run on Monday. It was another windy day and it wasn’t as fun as last Friday’s super windy run. I got it done though!! ๐Ÿ™‚

img_9336

Tuesday:ย

  • 35 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 15 minutes of strength work

Bleh. Spending time on the stationary bike is definitely not my idea of fun. But it’s probably good that I do. And obviously strenght training is always a good idea! Haha I definitely need to spend more time doing it, but a little something is better than nothing! ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_9350

Wednesday:ย

  • 2 miles

My legs and abs were feeling kinda sore on Wednesday. So obviously that means my tiny bit of strength work did something on Tuesday! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Haha sore muscles sure didn’t stop me from turning what was supposed to be an easy run into something that might have been just a little too hard. For the most part I kept the first mile pretty easy, but then my music app crashed, I turned on American Idiot, Jesus of Suburbia came on, and I ran harder for most of the second mile, and ended up negative splitting for the first time in a while (at least I think it’s been a while. Honestly I really haven’t been paying attention to that haha. Oh man, this turned out to be a really fun run. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_9381

Thursday:

  • 35 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 15 minutes of yoga

Hahah was not feeling it on Thursday. I mostly just couldn’t focus on one tasks for any amount of time. Meh, whatever. I still got a little bit done. ๐Ÿ™‚

Friday:

  • Grocery day
  • Took the dogs to the park

I couldn’t in my right mind call Friday a rest day haha. Not with all of the running around and shopping that Luke and I did. Not gonna lie though, grocery shopping day is my favorite day haha. Who doesn’t like obtaining food?!? After that adventure was done and over with we took the dogs to the off leash dog park and let them run around for a while. They definitely enjoyed that. Anyway, Friday was more like a day off running than an actual rest day. It was fun though. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_9421

Saturday:

  • 7 miles

I think this run just might have been the longest I’ve done since I ran my last half marathon back in November. Oops… Surprisingly enough though, it actually went pretty well!! I was initially having fun, fueled by Honey Stinger, compressed by Zensah, of course. ๐Ÿ˜‰ But then it started getting really windy, and I’m not a fan of the wind haha. Especially the really strong gusts that can make breathing difficult. So I ended up with 7 miles instead of the 8 I had originally planned on doing, but I’m not to worried about that. It was still a pretty good run.

img_9443-1

Sunday:

  • Rest Day

I was feeling kinda bleh on Sunday. That had me a little bit worried for a little bit, because I’ve heard about some kind of awful stomach bug that’s going around and I DO NOT WANT IT!!!! Apparently it involves lots of fluids coming out of both ends. Obviously neither of those things would be fun, but I hate vomiting more than pretty much anything I can think of. It’s the absolute worst in my opinion and I will make myself even more miserable by fighting it for as long as I can. Yeah, that usually doesn’t go well for me, but I hate puking… Luckily neither Luke or myself have gotten that bug though, so hopefully we’ll remain healthy until that thing blows over.

Anyway, Sunday was also the “big game” day football thing. Not gonna lie. I hate football. I don’t understand football. I think football is boring. Haha this tweet sums up my night quite nicely though. And Michelob Ultra replied which was kinda neat haha.

img_9466

Also, probably an unpopular opinion, but I thought the Justin Timberlake halftime show was terrible… Like, what the hell happened to music?!? Why does it have to be some big, grand, crazy performance instead of a musician just preforming their songs… I don’t know man, I don’t get it. And what was with the Prince thing?!? I mean, didn’t at one point Prince say that was exactly the kind of thing he’d never want to happen?? So I feel like that was kinda disrespectful. Whatever…

Plus I don’t think Justin Timberlake that great. Good grief I feel like I must be getting old, complaining about the popular music that kids these days are listening to. But in all fairness, he’s like 10 years older than me, and I very clearly remember theย NSYNC/Back Street Boy rivalry thing. I was always more of a Backstreet Boys girl. Haha that’s a lie, I was more of a just getting into rock music, but mostly into Disney movie sound tracks and lots of country music type of girl. But when asked to pick a side, it was always the Backstreet Boys. ๐Ÿ˜‰ But anyway, I’m getting waaaaay off topic here. I’ve got nothing else relevant to say about my week. So I’ll end there. With my rant about music haha.

Happy Monday!! I hope you’re not too hungover/stuffed full of chips and dip/disappointed with the outcome of the game this morning! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Weekly Recap: January 22nd-28th, 2018

It would appear that at some point last week, my best guess would be Monday or Wednesday when I decide it would be fun to run on ice/snow, I managed to hurt my foot. Luckily it doesn’t seem too bad. I can still walk on it just fine. But I don’t want it to turn into anything detrimental, so I took last Saturday, last Sunday, and this Monday off from running I’m hopes that it would help. It seemed to, which is great! But this little incident reminded me just how injury prone I am, and that I really need to work on things to supplement my running in order to stay healthy and finally get to work on my goals for this year, because thus far I’ve accomplished very little in the ways of getting those started…

Monday:

  • 15 minutes of strength work
  • 45 minutes on the stationary bike

img_9171-1

Tuesday:ย

  • Rest Day

So, in this post I said I was going to spend some time on the stationary bike or something on Tuesday. I also talked about how tired I’ve been. So obviously we know which one won haha. But I did make another batch of Superhero muffins from Run Fast Eat Slow. Not gonna lie, I’m surprised at how much I love these things, considering the fact that they’ve got a pretty decent amount of vegetables in them. But they are super tasty!! ๐Ÿ™‚

img_9249

Wednesday:ย

  • 2 miles

Ugh, you know it’s a rough week when you’re first run is on Wednesday and it’s super short…But on the bright side, my intention was to just do an easy run, but this one kinda turned into a tempo run. It definitely felt like I was running at a “comfortably hard” pace and I caught myself pushing a little bit up a few hills anyway, so I’m gonna call it a tempo run haha. Plus I had on my super sweet Honey Stinger socks, and running is awesome socks makes it at least 10 times more fun. ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_9215

Thursday:

  • 40 minutes of yoga/foam rolling

Jeez louise, I’ve just felt like a lazy, tired, unmotivated, pile of mush this week. I mean, at least as far as running goes. On Thursday I didn’t feel like running, stationary biking, or doing any kind of productive strength training. Plus I was a little worried about my foot after Wednesday’s run ended up being a little bit harder than it probably should have. It felt fine, but I still want to be careful with it. So I ended up walking all 3 dogs instead, and then spent a decent amount of time on my yoga mat. So at the very least that’s good. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_9242

Friday:

  • 5 miles

My foot was still feeling 100% fine, so that’s good. I was still feeling super crazy tired even though I got really good sleep the night before, so that kinda sucked. And here in Kansas we were under a wind advisory all day and were experiencing gusts of wind that were up to 45 MPH. Ugh. I will gladly run in the rain, snow, ice, freezing cold, it doesn’t matter. But the one weather condition I hate even more than heat is strong gusts of wind. They suck… But surprisingly even with all of that, this run ended up being a lot of fun! I swear, the best runs happen when you least expect them. Also spent a lot of time playing a fun little game called “dodge the trash can!”, as everyone’s trash cans, recycle bins, and the trash that was once in them were all blowing all over the place because of the wind.

img_9259

Saturday:ย

  • Rest Day

Stayed up late on Friday. Woke up late on Saturday. I think I’ve officially messed up my regular sleep schedule at this point. The problem with winter running is that I can get s run done at pretty much any time of day. I don’t have to worry about the sun being up and it being crazy hot out. That’s nice and all, but I tend to use it as an excuse to fall out of a normal sleeping pattern and that’s not a good choice. Especially since when I wake up at 9 am I tend to feel like doing nothing all day. Like I did on Saturday…

Bubbles didn’t mind me not doing anything though. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Sunday:

  • 2.38 miles

Another day of staying up late and then sleeping in. Oops. I think I’m gonna have to work on that this week, otherwise I’m gonna be in for a rude awakening when it starts getting warm out and I need to get out before it gets too hot…But anyway, usually I take a rest day on Sunday, but since I did that yesterday I decided to do a quick loop around my neighborhood, so at the very least I’d have a couple more miles in my already super low running mileage bank haha.

img_9314

All in all, I felt like my week was super unproductive and that I didn’t exactly accomplish much. Util I saw that my Garmin said my training status was “productive” again. I’m not entirely sure just how accurate any of that stuff is, but it’s been a while since it’s said I was being productive, so hey, I’ll take it!! And I think next week is going to end up being a lot better anyway. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_9316

Happy happy Sunday, everyone!!

~Ashley

January 12th, 2018

This morning I woke up tired, sore, and unmotivated to do pretty much anything. Initially I was super frustrated with myself. I mean, it wasn’t all that long ago when I could do an easy 4 miler like I did yesterday, and wake up feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to take on the day and tackle another run. But I took a minute to take a step back and really look at what’s going on. I did kind of do a lot yesterday! I braved the elements and did an almost 4 mile run (it was 3.89, but that’s freaking close enough hahaha) with ice under my feet and pretty harsh wind gusts which where sometimes at my back and sometimes at my face. It was slow going (it was more slipping, sliding, walking over really bad patches of ice, and stopping for cars), hard work, and most importantly, a lot of fun!

And then later in the day I did a 30 minute yoga sequence and spend 30 minutes on my stationary bike (and it wasn’t 30 minutes of me just fucking around on the bike like I sometimes do, I was actually putting in some work hahaha! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). And that was all on top of me being sick last week, and being crazy busy with Christmas stuff the week before that, so no freaking wonder I don’t feel like doing anything today!

Sure maybe at one point I could have done a hard workout after everything I did yesterday. And yes, compared to what some people can do/are currently doing, I did hardly anything yesterday. But comparing myself to other people or to what I could do at another point and time is literally going to get me nowhere. It doesn’t getย anyoneย anywhere.

So, this is where I’m at right now and that’s ok. I’ve got some really big goals I want to accomplish and I’m going to have to work really hard to make them happen. But right now I need to focus on even getting to the point of being able to work towards them. I can’t just jump right back into what I was doing several months ago and think that will work. It won’t. More likely than not I’ll just end up burnt out or hurt, and I’m already super injury prone haha. I need to work back up to where I was and then build from there. And if that means having to skip out on a run here or there to rest, then so be it. For me today, not running is a win. ๐Ÿ™‚

I know this post is kinda just one big “note to self” thing. But if you take anything away from it, let it be the fact that it’s ok to be where you’re at right now and to work with that instead of comparing yourself to someone else or to your past self (something that I’m super guilty of), and then trying to do too much, or getting frustrated and giving up on whatever your goal happens to be. You’ve got this. I believe in you. Which is also a good “note to self”. ๐Ÿ™‚

I hope you have a fantastic Friday!!

~ Ashley

Weekly Recap: January 1st-7th, 2018

Welp, the new year has kinda gotten off to a rough start for me. I’ve been sick (again ๐Ÿ˜‘) and unable to do much running. Mostly because we’ve been stuck in single/negative temperatures and attempting to run in that with a sore throat is pretty freaking miserable. So I’ve mostly been focusing on rest this week, which is probably exactly what I need after all of the craziness, running around, alcohol, and super late nights that our Christmas adventures brought last week. But resting has been kinda nice. Luke took most of this week off from work, so we’ve been hanging out, playing video games, and cooking a few things from Run Fast Eat Slow. So that’s been fun!

Not gonna lie, watching everyone else getting to work on their goals for the new year has been a little bit torturous. I’ve got big goals that I want to start working on too! ๐Ÿ˜‚ But first I gotta get over this illness…

Monday (New Year’s Day):

  • 2 miles

I attempted to get a decent run in on Monday. But like I said, the super cold temps were not mixing well with my sore throat, so I had to call it at 2 miles. Haha I probably shouldn’t have even done that, but oh well. ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_8712

Tuesday:

  • ย Rest Day

Yeah, I woke up feeling even worse on Tuesday. Basically conferming the fact that I should have not run on Monday. But I mean, I had to start off 2018 with a run! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Anyway, Luke and I spent most of Tuesday at home, doing a whole lot of nothing, which is probably what I needed. I also spent a lot of time drinking apple cider vinegar and raw honey in warm water, because it’s good for colds/sore throats.

Wednesday:ย

  • Walked around the dog park

Started to feel a little bit better on Wednesday! Plus it was a little bit warmer (and by that I mean it was in the 20’s ๐Ÿ˜‰ ), so we took the dogs to the park so they could run around a little bit. And then for dinner we made the herb chicken, and miso soup from Run Fast Eat Slow! Haha I had to make a few changes to the soup; I couldn’t find any red miso at the store so I used white, and I used some nori sheets I had instead of having to buy wakame. It still ended up tasting really good though! I added some soba noodles and it ended up being the perfect dinner on a cold winter’s night. Oh and the chicken turned out really well too!! I just don’t have a photo of it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thursday:

  • Rest Day

My throat was still sore on Thursday, but I was starting to feel like I was finally starting to get well again. I wonder if my delicious soup had something to do with that? ๐Ÿ˜‰ I didn’t want to push it though, so no running. But I did make some of the superhero muffins from Run Fast Eat Slow. Those turned out really well!!!

Friday:

  • 3 miles

Was feeling much better by Friday, so I decided to get a nice 3 miler done. It was about 18 degrees out and by the end of it my throat was starting to hurt a little bit again. But when I was about a mile in some guy wearing a veteran hat, while walking a Chihuahua that was wearing a pink sweater called me tough. So I mean, that was great. ๐Ÿ™‚

Saturday:

  • Easy peasy 20 minute run (1.5 miles)
  • 10 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 20 minutes of yoga

Still sniffling and sneezing on Saturday, but as a whole I was feeling a lot better! Haha tired, but better. ๐Ÿ™‚ Almost didn’t run though. Like I said, I was tired, and it was still pretty cold out and I was worried about my throat starting to hurt again…But when I checked the weather I saw that we were supposed to get some freezing rain on Sunday, so I decided I needed to get a short run in since I probably wouldn’t be able to the next day. I’m glad I did it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Sunday:

  • Rest Day

Basically just trying to get back into my usual scheduled, which means taking Sunday as a rest day. ๐Ÿ™‚ The freezing rain actually just turned out to be a really really cold rain, so the roads weren’t at all bad like I was worried they’d end up being. So I ended up taking all of the dogs for walks in the rain. Haha not like they mind! Probably not the best decision for me, since I’m attempting to get over this cold, but I love me some rainy weather!! ๐Ÿ™‚

So yeah, it’s definitely been an interesting week haha. Glad I’m finallly feeling better and I’m super excited to really get started on my goals for this month and this year!

I hope everyone had a good week!
