Alrighty, so yesterday I left off at the end of our pre show shenanigans. My brother, Luke, and I were all in our seats waiting for the opening band to come on. So not gonna lie, I’ve been complaining since we got the tickets about how Rancid (my second favorite band 😉 ) toured with Green Day in Europe but now that both bands are in the US they’re both doing different tours. Currently Rancid is touring with the Drop Kick Murphies and they aren’t spending very much time in the Midwest…sad face. Oh well, maybe one day I’ll get to see Rancid live. Anyways, Catfish and the Bottlemen are currently touring with Green Day. At around 7:30 pm the lights went out and they came on.
I don’t really know much about them, not gonna lie. Before Friday I had only ever heard one of their songs and that was because I had looked it up on YouTube haha. I don’t think they’re exactly my cup of tea, but they were really good!! Lot’s of energy and a great stage presence, it was pretty fun! Definitely a good way to get pumped up for Green Day haha. I gotta say, I do kinda feel for opening bands. I mean, most people are obviously there to see the headliner and don’t really care much about the opener. Luke and I were both among that group of people. They played for about half an hour but after every song Luke and I would look at each other and wonder aloud if that was their last song. I guess that’s kinda mean, but we were their to see Green Day, dammit!! Plus their lights kept shining directly into our eyes and that kinda sucked. I swear I’m not trying to bash them too hard though, they were still really good!!
Once they were done with their set the lights came back on and the stage crew came out to set up for Green Day. Once they were about done setting up, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen started playing over the loud speakers. Now if you know anything about Green Day’s live performances or have seen the YouTube videos, this is something they’ve been doing for a while now before they come out on stage. Everyone sings along and it’s amazing! 🙂
Haha so I couldn’t find a video of the crowd in Kansas City (no suprises there), so here’s a video of the crowd at Hyde Park on July 1st. Kansas City wasn’t this epic. Obviously there were a lot less people there, but we all still sang and it was still pretty great!
So after Bohemian Rhapsody the Drunk Bunny (who’s also been a staple at Green Day shows for quite some time now), comes out to Blitzkrieg Bop by the Ramones to get everyone pumped up! As if we needed even more pumped up at that point. We were all very ready for some Green Day!!
Shitty pictures are shitty.
I wish we could have been closer, but hey, at least we were there!
Here’s a better photo of the Drunk Bunny from a different show. 🙂 Source.
Once Blitzkrieg Bop ended the Drunk Bunny made his way off stage and Green Day’s opening music started playing over the loud speakers and everyone who knew what that meant lost their damn minds! Then once the band started making their way onto the stage everyone else realized what was going on and they lost their minds too! 😉 It was great!!
Green Day didn’t waste much time getting into their opening song; Know Your Enemy. Haha I think Know Your Enemy might be my least favorite Green Day song ever, but I have to admit I was pretty stoked to be seeing it live (and for the second time too! 😉 ). Plus I already knew that was what they were going to open with because I’ve seen pretty much every set list from every show from this tour at this point. Pathetic? Maybe. But I do not care haha! Anyways, it typical Green Day fashion, Billie Joe didn’t waste any time pulling a fan up onto stage to sing and then stage dive. That’s one thing I absolutely love about this band, they’re all about crowed participation!! 🙂 And This kid was freaking awesome! He knew the words to the song and really did stage dive! Here’s a video if you wanted to experience his awesomeness for yourself. 🙂
After Know Your Enemy they moved into Bang Bang followed by Revolution Radio. I was pretty excited to see both of those played! And it seemed like the rest of the crowd was too!! They band also looked like they were already having a great time. Billie Joe was running around stage like an absolute mad man and you would have sworn there was no way in hell that than man was 43 years old.
At this point things kinda start to blur together for me haha. I mean, obviously I know what happened and I could probably list off the set list from Friday night pretty accurately (I looked it up just to be safe though 😉 ) but there’s just some stuff that I don’t remember exactly when it happened, but it most certainty did, so I’m just gonna do my best at remembering when all of this happened haha. I guess I was just a little bit caught up in the moment and the absolute euphoria of seeing my all time favorite band (and for the second time too!! I feel like not everyone can say that they’ve seen their all time favorite band more than once).
Anyways, after playing the first two singles from RevRad they moved onto some stuff from American Idiot! Fucking sweet!! I mean, who doesn’t like AI (haha a lot of people don’t actually, but those people are wrong. 😉 ). Anyway, we got to see Holiday, Letterbomb, and Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, in that order. That was kinda weird actually, on the actual album Boulevard of Broken Dreams follows Holiday and that’s normally how they’d play it live, but I guess it was kinda neat to have it switched up a bit. Plus I was just super excited to see Letterbomb live. I’ve always wanted to and now I have. 🙂
Once they finished with Boulevard Of Broken Dreams Billie Joe (and maybe Jason White, they’re other guitarist, but like I said I don’t remember exactly) ran off stage to change guitars, while Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool played together for a bit and then started off Longview (a classic from their album Dookie). Billie Joe walked back on stage proudly showing of “Blue” his first guitar and asked the crowed “how many old school Green Day fans are out there tonight”, before playing the song. Many people screamed at the top of their lungs, myself included. 🙂
They also pulled another fan up on stage to sing the last verse of Longview. He was a lot of fun! He was obviously having the time of his life haha!! And of course Billie Joe made him stage dive too.
So just a quick side note, one of the reasons I wanted to do the Longview half as my first half marathon and why I want to keep doing it is because I’m obviously reminded of the song. My life is in fact just one giant Green Day reference. 😉
After Lonview the moved into Youngblood another song from Revolution Radio (and one of my favorites too!). If you’ve never hear the song, one of the lines is “she said fuck you I’m from Oakland”, so in the live shows they usually have the crowd sing the “fuck you I’m from Oakland part. But once we got to that point Billie Joe told us to say “fuck you I’m from Kansas City” (so of course we did) and at the end of the song he told us not to tell anyone from Oakland that he said that and that Raider’s nation can be a little crazy (hahaha I had to ask Luke about that, but apparently Oakland and KC are football rivals.).
After that he asked if there were any really old school Green Day fans out there, and again, I screamed. 😉 And then they went on to play 2,000 Light Years Away (which I got to see back in 2009 too! 🙂 ), Hitchin A Ride (on of my all time favorites), When I Come Around (which is always a blast live!), Welcome To Paradise (which is always lots of fun), and Minority (another of my favorites!). Haha the only problem with Minority was that a bunch of people didn’t know that they were supposed to do the “fuck ’em all” part in the middle of the song, so that was a little weak and disappointing. Haha but of course I was ready for it and it was still fun to get to scream that. 🙂
Now I think at some point in the middle of all of that Billie Joe said he felt like shit because he ate McDonald’s for the first time in like, 5 years. He went on to explain that it was like a one night stand. At the moment you want it and it’s great, but you totally regret it the next day. I mean, that wasn’t word for word or anything, but that’s the gist. It was pretty funny.
Then they moved back to a few songs from American Idiot. This time it was Are We The Waiting and St. Jimmy. Ah man, that was fucking great.
After that they pulled yet another person up on stage. This time to play guitar for a Knowledge cover. They’ve been doing that a lot this tour and it’s pretty awesome! The kid they pulled up on stage totally killed it and we all chanted his name when the song was over. I’m sure that was a surreal experience for him! He also got to keep the guitar he played and then Billie Joe dedicated the next song, which was Basket Case, to him. Lucky bastard. 😉 Then after Basket Case they played She, and then King For A Day.
So King For A Day has also been a staple in Green Day shows for a while now and it is a lot of fun! After King For A Day they usually spend some time covering some songs and this show was no different. Billie Joe sang a little bit of Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life, (I can’t Get No) Satisfaction, and Hey Jude. That’s like, all they’ve been covering lately, so it was a tad bit disappointing that there wasn’t anything different thrown in there, but oh well, it was still a lot of fun and there was plenty of crowd participation. 🙂
In the middle of all of that Billie Joe went on one of his speeches (this is the point of the show where he usually does). I don’t remember all of it word for word, but he talked a lot about love and equality. That it was ok to be a freak and a weirdo or whatever and that even if you feel alone in life you never really are. How he came from a fucked up family and how everyone came from a fucked up family, but that’s what makes us all different and awesome. And how everyone deserves to be treated with love, respect, and deserves health care. Haha he just casually slipped that in and if you weren’t really listening you probably would have missed it, but it was fucking awesome.
I’m kinda surprised he didn’t say anything about the Westboro Baptist Church being there, but I guess he kinda didn’t have to. I mean, they were out there trying spreading their hate and bigotry, while he was preaching love and acceptance. Basically what I’m trying to say is I think it’s kind of ironic the the WBC thinks Green Day is a problem when really it’s probably them. And that’s why I was kind of excited when I found out that they’d be there before the show (and why my brother and I look so happy in the picture Luke took of us in front of them. That’s in this post if you want to see it. 😉 ).
Once they finished that spectacle they finished their set with Still Breathing and Forever Now. Oh man, that was amazing!! At this point I was absolutely exausted and I had no idea how they were still up there running around on stage, singing, playing instruments, and obviously having just as good of a time as we all were. That was pretty much the moment that I realized that everyone in Green Day is probably in much better shape than I am haha.
Ok, so I say they finished their set with Forever Now, but that’s not really true haha. They said it was their last song, but everyone knows that they always play an encore. Well, that’s actually not true. After Forever Now a bunch of people got up to leave haha. But I knew they were gonna play on encore. Actually, they always play two. A regular encore and then Billie Joe plays an acoustic encore. So After a few minutes Green Day came back out on stage and played American Idiot followed by Jesus Of Suburbia.
Oh. My. Gosh. I was soooo ridiculously happy about that!! Like I’d mentioned in a post about what songs I wanted to see them play, Green Day has the crowed sing the first few lines of American Idiot and that’s such an awesome experience! And then I’ve been saying I hoped they played Jesus Of Suburbia since we got the tickets!! It’s one of my all time favorite songs and they totally killed it!! It’s a 9 minute song, it was at the end of their set, but the still put everything they had into it and I was super impressed. Like I said, at that point I was exhausted, but I was on my feet and singing my heart out to that song.
After Jesus Of Suburbia the rest of the band left the stage, Billie Joe came out with his acoustic guitar and played 21 Guns. Again, he had the crowd sing a few line, a bunch of people had their phone flashlights on, (and a few people ever had lighters!), and Billie Joe said it was beautiful. It really was too. It was a magical experience. 🙂 After 21 Guns he played Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) which is the song they end ALL of their shows with. Haha I think Good Riddance is always a bitter sweet experience. Because everyone likes seeing it live, it really means something at the end of the show, but at the same time, it means the show is over and you have to go back to your normal life haha.
So during this tour Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool have been coming out on stage at the end of Good Riddance and Billie Joe’s been making Mike Dirnt play the last few cords of the song. After the song was over the took some bows, threw their extra guitar picks and drumsticks to people in the pit, exited the stage, and that was that. Then we had to go back to our normal lives. 😉
Except first we had to make our way out of the stadium, into the car, out of the parking garage, navigate through terrible traffic, and then go back to life as usual haha. That was all crazy, but we made it. 🙂 My brother said he had a lot of fun and Green Day was definitely a great show for his first concert. And Luke and I both thought this show was better than the one we saw in St. Louis back in 2009. It was soooo much fun! And the band must of had a bunch of fun too, because right after the show Billie Joe got on Facebook live and said that it was a great show and that this has been a great tour so far! 🙂
Alright. That’s it. I’ve officially relived it all and this’ll probably be my last Green Day post for a while (probably haha). Not gonna lie, just writing this wore me out all over again. But I’d totally do it all again in a hear beat. I hope eventually we’ll be able to see Green Day again. 🙂
Anyways, I hope everyone has a great day!!
