Alrighty! As for my other goals, well, I kinda took a little break from them! Since Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days was my big goal for November I figured I could use a little break from everything else. Especially since I took about a week off from running and have just been slowly working my way back into a regular running routine. It didn’t really make sense to me to be trying to hit 10,000 steps everyday or trying to journal about everything since I have kinda fallen out of that habit anyway.
But now that a new month is upon us and I’m pretty much back into my usual running routine (but in a much more laud back fashion 😉) I’m getting right back into it!
I’ve also been thinking about what my goals for the upcoming year are going to look like. I’ve been thinking about that a lot since all of my racing for the year is done. I’m thinking my goals for 2019 are going to involve a lot of time goals. I didn’t really have any this year and I ended up not PRing my times for anything. That’s not a huge deal considering I’ve still made quite a bit of progress this year, just in a different way. But I sure have missed getting this shiny new PRs so that’s what I’m going to be focusing on! Among a few other things, of course. 😉

Ah November. It’s one on my most favorite months of the year. Mostly because we’ve always got a lot going on this month and I think it’s a lot of fun!! 😁
One of the reasons November is so much fun is because it’s my birthday month!!! Hahaha I was born exactly half way into November, on the 15th back in 1991. So I turned 27 this year. Yay!🥳
Haha so my father-in-law always pick out weird/funny cards to send me for my birthday. Last year’s was a cat shooting lasers out of its eyes to light the candles on a birthday cake. Haha it’s still hanging up on my fridge actually. 😂 I thought that one was gonna be hard to beat, but this year’s was a flying kitten with rainbows and stuff. It was great.
Anyway, Luke is the best and got me a believe Training journal. I’ve wanted one of these for a while and I’m really stoked about it! It’s so neat and full of all sorts of awesome stuff! I can’t wait to start using it!! Hahaha I’m gonna wait to start filling it out until December though.
Ugh it’s so pretty!!! 😍😍😍 Plus I finally found a good use for a bunch of the stickers that have come in my monthly StrideBoxes. I’ve had a huge stack of them just collecting in my drawer, but I thought this was a good place to put them. Along with a good ol Honey Stinger sticker and a fortune cookie fortune. 😁
Luke also got me Chinese food for my birthday dinner, because that’s kind of a tradition for me. Even from when I was a little kid I always wanted Chinese food for my birthday. It was a great birthday dinner. 😊 No cake though. I’ve never been a big cake person. Hahaha when I was a kid my grandma used to make me giant batches of rice crispy treats instead of birthday cakes. I’ve also had cookie cakes, pies, cheesecake, and ice cream cakes (which is kinda weird for a November birthday 😂), instead of normal cake. I wasn’t really feeling dessert this year though, which is weird for me. But I was really into the Chinese food.
Anyway, the day after my birthday I found out about a 5k/10k turkey trot on Thanksgiving Day that gives out while pumpkin pies to all of the finishers. So of course I signed up for the 5k. 🦃🏃🏻♀️ I’ve never done a turkey trot until this year, and of course I’m an overachiever about it and have ended up doing two. 😂 Well, signing up for two at this point. But there’s no way I’m not gonna finish a 3.1 mile turkey trot.
Anyway, while signing up I also bought a sweet turkey hat, to go along with my spiffy turkey trot Zensah compression socks, and Gobbler Grind hoodie. So I’m gonna be all turkey’d out for this race! Well, my hoodie doesn’t have a turkey on it, it just says “Gobbler Grind Marathon, Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k”. But I think it still counts. 🦃😊
So yeah, I’m super duper excited about that! I’ve never done a turkey trot on Thanksgiving Day before because Luke and I usually travel to either Colorado or Illinois to be apart of one of our families Thanksgiving’s. But both of our dads work on Thanksgiving this year, so we decided to save some money and just stay home and do our own Thanksgiving.
We might end up doing something with my brother-in-law, his girlfriend, and her kids. But they always want us to come to their apartment and Luke and I aren’t to keen on that idea. We’re both crazy excited to be out of our apartment (for going on 4 years now 😁) and we enjoy having more space that’s all our own. Plus they vape inside their apartment and I just can’t handle that. Those things destroy my lungs… And we have a backyard their dogs could run around in, but whatever. If they don’t want to come to our house we’ll probably just stay home and do our own thing.
Okey dokey, enough about Thanksgiving for now. I ran today!!! Hahaha I was very resigned to take at least a week off from running after my races last weekend and I mean, I kinda made it. 😂 But oh man, my life is an absolute wreck when I don’t have running and the routine that it keeps me in. So I HAD to run today.
I only did 1 super easy mile, but apparently that was enough to get me back on track. Ever since I started my little break I’ve been eating like shit and sitting around being an absolute lazy and unproductive lump of a human being. Now, I’m a firm believer that sometimes doing things like that is necessary. But at this point I feel like I’ve gotten a bit out of hand with it. 😂 But like I said, my super short run this morning helped. 😄
It’s pretty crazy how tired, lazy, and out of it NOT running can make a person feel! I know a break is necessary, but yesterday I felt like shit. That’s when I decided that I absolutely NEEDED to run. Even if it was only a super short 1 mile run. 😊
Whew! Anyway, more photos from the Gobbler Grind Half were posted online last night. Of course I appreciate free race photos, but I’m really disappointed about how terrible the quality of all of the photos are. legit could have taken better pictures with my phone. In fact, my dad and I DID take better photos with our phones.They had legit photographs with DSLR cameras, so I’m not sure what happened here…
I mean, they aren’t awful. But I still feel like I could have handed someone my phone and ended up with a much better quality photo. oh well. At least they’re free!
But let’s just compare them to this photo taken at Longview. I cropped this one A LOT and it’s still a much better quality. Plus photos from Longview were free as well.

My dad signed us up Tuesday, so there’s no turning back now! This November he’ll be running his first half marathon and I’ll be running two half marathons in two days! That should be an interesting experience!
I think I’m up for the challenge though! Plus its pretty darn exciting that my dad and I are doing another race together and the fact that this will be the first of hopefully many half marathons that he will run! 😉 It’s also pretty exciting that I have someone who actually wants to do these things with me! Not gonna lie, for the most part I do prefer to run alone, but I’m always open to run with other people anyway! Especially my family!
So like I mentioned on Monday, he’s been gearing up in preparation for half marathon training! On Sunday he got himself a legit pair of running shoes, an r8 roller, a bunch of Honey Stinger waffles, and a pair of compression socks, and on Tuesday, along with registering ups both for the Gobbler Grind, he got himself a Road ID (which I think is one of the most important pieces of gear you can own. I’ve got a whole post about what they are and why I think they’re important that you can read here 🙂 ) and a bunch of badges for it.
So he should be pretty much set! Plus he has the added benefit of being able to talk to someone who’s done the whole half marathon thing, has been running for almost 5 years, and who is always reading, listening to podcasts, and talking to more experienced runners about the subject. Lucky him haha! Aside from all of the various resources I’ve mentioned I’ve been pretty much on my own with the whole running and half marathon-ing thing. Maybe one day I’ll hire a coach. At least that would take a lot of the guess work out of it. But I do kinda like flying solo. 😉
As for me, well, I’m not too worried. At least not yet haha. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna be able to pull off this stunt and when I do I’m pretty sure that’s just gonna be even more justification to myself that I absolutely need to run a full marathon, probably next year. 😉 But we’ve still got a ways to go before we get anywhere near that territory.
Anyway, I’m a little bit annoyed right now. Earlier this week my neighbor let her daughter come over while she was really sick. Literally the first thing that kid said when she walked through my door was “I have a really bad cold.” Yup, after she said that I knew I’d be getting sick…and now, of course I am. It was really bad yesterday, but I seem to be improving a little bit today. My throat is pretty sore though and that’s super annoying. Plus I’ve been super crazy tired, so I didn’t run yesterday or today. I figured it was probably best to let my body rest.
I’m annoyed though because now Luke has also come down with it and had to come home early from work today. All of this could have been prevented if my neighbor would have just kept her kid at home. Or at least would have told me that the kid was sick when she asked if she could come over, because then I would have said no. Don’t get me wrong, I like my neighbors and I really don’t mind that her kid comes over all the time. She likes to hang out with me and play with all of our animals. But I don’t exactly think it’s cool to be sending your sick kid to someone else house so that she can infect everyone else. Like I said, now both Luke and I have it and it fucking sucks..
Especially since it’s really nice outside right now and there is a bunch of stuff we need to get done for the garden, the rabbits, the chickens, and whatnot and this evening would have been a good time to get a start on some of that because Luke doesn’t work tomorrow, but now we aren’t going to get a chance to take advantage of that or the nice weather (it’s supposed to rain on tomorrow, and then get kinda cold again on Saturday and Sunday) which sucks. I don’t know man, obviously I don’t have kids, but if I did I don’t think I’d be sending their sick asses around to infect the neighbors.
So yeah, did a whole lot of nothing yesterday. This morning I walked Lily since it was crazy nice out and I figured getting a little bit of vitamin D might help my situation a little bit. I’ve also been trying to drink more water today because I didn’t drink much yesterday. It’s super hard to motivate yourself to drink water when your throat hurts. Which is weird because right now cold stuff seems to be making my throat feel a little better, but I still don’t feel like drinking water. Haha bodies are weird. I’ve also been making a point to eat super well today. Trying to get lots of nutrients in to help my body fight off this thing as quickly as possible. I’m already tired of all of this “resting” nonsense, but I know I’ll probably get well faster if I do it. I just don’t really do the whole sitting around doing nothing thing well. Especially on really pretty days like today when I’d rather be outside.
Oh well. I can’t do much about it now, aside from what I’m already doing. Hopefully this illness wont stick around for too long because both Luke and I are already very tired of it haha.
Oh, but possible on the bright side, my Oiselle pocket jogger capris should hopefully be getting here tomorrow! There was a whole freaking debacle about that haha. I had originally ordered a pair on March 16th, but long story short, the UPS lost them and it took them 3 weeks to figure that out. Yeah, that was super annoying. But Oiselle’s customer service is pretty great and they refunded the order right away after the UPS officially declared them lost or whatever. So I re-ordered them last Friday and hopefully they’ll actually get here this time. If not I’m gonna have to make a point to not order anything online that ships via the UPS. This isn’t the first time I’ve had issues with the UPS but it’s been the worst by far. I really really want to try out Oiselle’s leggings though and this particular pair has ALL OF THE POCKETS! So fingers crossed that the UPS doesn’t fuck up a second time. I mean, what are the odds, right?

Anyway, kicked off my week with a little bit of 5k action! It wasn’t a particularly exciting run, but it was a good one. Plus my April StrideBox was waiting for me in my mailbox by the time I was done! Yay!! Always love getting my box full of exciting running goodies. So yeah, my week is off to a pretty great start so far. 🙂
My hand is feeling a lot better today too! It’s still a little sore and awkward but I can actually use it mostly normally now. My little puncture wound is healing really well too. It’s not quite closed up yet, but it’s definitely getting there. Haha I do not recommend getting bit by a dog. It’s no fun and just might put your hand out of commission for several days. But luckily it hasn’t actually been too big of an issue.
Ok, so onto my potentially bad decision then I guess. So the other day I texted my dad and asked him if he’d want to do another running thing with me. A half marathon as a matter of fact! The Gobbler Grind half marathon that is held here in Kansas. November! My dad does a lot of hiking and has been doing some running ever since we did the Whiskey run 5k together in March. So I think he’ll be able to do it, no problem. Plus the cut off time for this particular half is 4 hours. That’s about a 14 minuter per mile pace. I think that’s totally doable for him. The real question is, will it be doable for me?
You see, the problem is the Gobbler Grind marathon/half marathon/5k (but obviously we want to do the half haha) is held the second Sunday of November every year. And the Longview half marathon is held the second Saturday of November every year. And obviously I want to to the Longview half every year! I’ve talked about all of those reasons on here before, but I also really want to do the Gobbler Grind half marathon. That’s actually why I’ve recruited my dad to do the Gobbler Grind with me! I figure I’ll be more likely to make it through another half marathon after doing one the day before if I have someone there with me! Specifically, someone who has no time goal and who just wants to make it through there first. So it’ll be beneficial for both of us. 🙂
I’m already registered for the Longview Half and there’s no way I’m skipping out on my newly established November tradition!
Now the Gobbler Grind isn’t a for sure thing yet. My dad works for a trucking company and they’re always crazy busy in November because of everyone shipping Christmas stuff, and at this point my dad is pretty much running two different trucking terminals and he and his boss are working on opening a third. Plus my dad lives in Colorado so it’s an 11 hour drive just for him to get her. But he seems like he really wants to do it and he said he’s gonna try to make it happen. Last night he went to a local specialty running store and had someone help him try on a bunch of shoes, and he finally decided on a pair of Hoka’s. He also got himself one of those fancy r8 rollers, some Honey Stinger waffles (he really likes the lemon flavored ones 😉 ), and a pair of compression socks. So he’s getting all of the tools he needs and plans on doing a beginner’s half marathon training plan!
Not gonna lie, I’m pretty freaking excited that I’ve managed to convert my dad into a runner! I think that’s so awesome! Plus now I’ve finally got someone who actually wants to do races with me!! That’s pretty sweet!
Now I’ve just got to play a fun little guessing game called “can Ashley run two half marathons in two days?” Obviously I’ve never done anything like that before but I think it’s doable. Especially since the Gobbler Grind course looks a little bit easier than Longview’s. I haven’t run it before, but part of it is on a paved trail that I used to run on back when I lived in an apartment in Overland Park, KS. I know the second of trail that the course follows like the back of my hand and I also know that it’s relatively flat. Especially compared to all of Longview’s rolling hills. So that’s something! Plus the cutoff time for the Gobbler Grind is an hour more than Longview’s so that should help too haha.
Here’s Longview’s elevation map according to my Garmin. As you can see, its a slightly up hill course, with plenty of hills, and one big ass hill that is the entirety of mile two. I am pretty sure there is not one flat stretch of road on this whole course haha. Fun fun fun!!
It’s a really good thing I plan on really working on upping my mileage this spring/summer! I’m gonna need it! I’m also probably going to have to really up my recovery game too, especially after I finish the Longview half for the 4th time in a row! Haha I am pretty stoked about that! My November tradition is going strong! 🙂

Whew, the thought of running two half running two half marathons in two days is absolutely terrifying! But all the more reason to do it, right? I mean, I didn’t become a runner not to do hard things! But like I said, it’s still not a for sure thing yet. Just a crazy plan that both my dad and I want to make happen and are both going to be working toward.

November is one of my favorite months of the year!! I kind of already talked about that, along with some thing’s I’m excited about here, but hey, I figured I could go into a little bit more detail about what they are and why I’m excited about them again! 🙂
1. The Longview Half Marathon
Not gonna lie, I’m partly dreading this one haha. This training cycle has not gone well for me. I spend almost two months over the summer injured and unable to run and then I got sick on Tuesday and was unable to do much running this week. That coupled with a lot of life stuff that’s been going on and I’ve been dealing with, I just don’t think I’ve done enough work to be able to run this half without doing a whole lot of suffering. If my most recent long runs are any indication, well then this thing is gonna be absolutely miserable.
I’m still excited for it though! This is going to be my 3rd half marathon and the 3rd year in a row that I’ve run this specific race (and since the KC Running Company has only been putting on this race for 4 years now, I think that’s really neat!). This race is becoming my November tradition and I want to run it as many years in a row as I can, so I definitely can’t back out on it now, when I’m so early into this little streak I’ve created for myself!
2. My Birthday!
Yay! I’m gonna be 26 years on on the 15th of this month!!
I think I might be getting to that age when some people (especially women) start getting a little bit self conscious about their age and don’t exactly want to celebrate birthdays anymore. I say that because I see a bunch of people I went to high school with post on Facebook complaining about how their getting “old”. I’m not entirely sure if they mean it or not though. Either way, I don’t think that at 25 going on 26 years old that I have enough life experience to be self conscious of my age. And honestly I don’t think I’m ever going to be the kind of person who is. It’s just a number, right? And besides, birthdays are fun! I mean, people spend the day acknowledging the fact that they’re glad you were born and celebrating the fact that you’ve traveled around the sun, well, 26 times in my case, but obviously that varies depending on how old you are. How neat is that?! 🙂
3. Traveling to Colorado for Thanksgiving!
Obviously Thanksgiving is usually a lot of fun in and of itself. You get to spend the day (hopefully) surrounded by family, stuffing your face full of turkey, pie, and all sorts of goodies, while thinking about all of the things you’re thankful for. But this year should be even more exciting because Luke and I are going to be spending Thanksgiving day with my mom, dad, and brother in Colorado. I don’t exactly get to see my family very often now that they live 10 hours away, so I’m excited to see them! I mean, neither of my sisters will be there. One has to work and the other’s husband just got home from being deployed in Europe so they want to spend some time alone, but at least I’ll get to see my parents and brother! I actually got to see my mom and brother over the summer, but it’s been a really long time since I’ve seen my dad, so I’m super stoked about that!!

4. The Coming of Colder Weather!
We’ve had some pretty nice days in October, and even a few pretty cold days, but November usually brings much colder weather and I can’t wait! Cold weather running is sooo much better and so much more fun than warm weather running.
5. Christmas Season!!
For me, Christmas season starts in November. Now, I’m not one of those people who start decorating and playing Christmas music and what not the second the clock strikes midnight on November first. But in my family it was basically a tradition to start decorating for Christmas on Thanksgiving day. I wont be able to do that this year, since we’ll be in Colorado on Thanksgiving (well, unless my mom and dad want to decorate their apartment that is), but I will the second I get home! Plus Christmas season is such a fun, magical time of year, so I’m gonna celebrate as long as possible, dammit! 😉

So, happy second day of November! November is definitely one of my favorite months out of the year. Actually, I think October-January is usually a lot of fun. I absolutely love all of the fall/winter/holiday festivities. But November is usually especially fun because I tend to have a lot going on during this month and of course this year is no different. So far here’s what I’ve got lined up for the wonderful month of November 2017;
22nd – Drive to Longmont Colorado to spend Thanksgiving with my parents
23rd – Thanksgiving. Bring on the turkey and pumpkin pie (that Luke and I will be making by the way. 🙂 )
24th- Drive back to Kansas. So we wont be there long. But sometime is better than no time. 🙂
25th – Start Decorating for Christmas!
So yeah! That’s all the fun stuff I’ve got going on this month (so far, the list might get added to. 😉 ). But I’ve also got some not so fun stuff I have to do. Like take down my Halloween decorations (which I’ll probably do tomorrow) and go to the gynecologist on the 13th for my yearly check up (I swear that place is freaking hard to get into! I scheduled this appointment at the beginning of the year and they were already pretty booked up!).
But yeah, the reason I’m a day late with this post and didn’t exactly get to enjoy Halloween, is because I’ve been suffering from the chest cold from hell!! Yeah, remember the reason why Luke had to take a sick day on Monday? Yeah, it got me on Tuesday…I would get sick on one of my favorite holidays. Not like it really matters though. Since Halloween was on a Tuesday we didn’t really do anything fun, and it was pretty darn cold so we for real only got 8 trick or treater’s this year. That was kinda sad. I gave everyone a big handful of candy (big enough for an 11 year old kid dressed as Pennywise to go “woooow!!!” 😉 ) but we still have a shit ton of left over candy…Oh well.
Anyways, I caught the chest cold from hell on Tuesday and spent most of the day lying around feeling sorry for myself. Because I was too tired/weak feeling to do much else. By Wednesday I was in an even worse state. I couldn’t really stand up for too long because it made me dizzy (the joys of combining chest congestion with asthma. Fun fun fun…), I was achy all over and my body basically felt super heavy, so I spent the day watching movies and trying pretty much unsuccessfully to cough up phlegm. Gross but true. But now on Thursday morning I think I’m on the up swing. I’m not so achy today and I keep sneezing, am finally able to hack up the nastiness from my lungs, and my ears are draining. Yet again, gross but true. But now that everything is moving up and out I’m starting to feel a little better. I plan on taking today easy as well, but depending on how I feel tomorrow I might just go for a short run! Because you know, this cold has just caused me to spend even more time not running during this training cycle…
Curse my weak immune system. And I really mean that. My immune system sucks. Partly because I do have asthma, and obviously airborne viruses + no so great lungs = a weaker immune system. But luckily at this point in my life my asthma isn’t too bad. I just kinda wheeze sometimes, and hot/humid weather and cigarette smoke will sometimes knock me on my ass, but other than that it’s not currently bad enough to warrant an inhaler of any kind. But I’ve also just learned that I have another hit against my immune system, and that would be the fact that I lack an appendix. Jeez! This whole not having an appendix thing really causes me some problems. I can’t eat certain things without having absolutely terrible stomach cramps and now my immune system is apparently weaker, because now doctors are pretty sure that the appendix plays a part in our immune systems. Which is why now a-days if you have appendicitis they’ll give you antibiotics first in hopes that will solve the issue and they wont have to take it out. Not that that would have helped me. My appendix ruptured (yeah apparently my abdomen was a huge mess) so it obviously had to come out. And now every doctor I’ve ever seen ever likes to tell me that I had an “old fashioned appendectomy” and then touch my scar. Which I absolutely hate…
Haha well that kinda turned into a rant! I wasn’t exactly planning on that. But dammit the more time that goes on the more medical science seems to learn about the appendix, and the more they learn, the more I wish I still had mine…One day I need to tell the story of how that all went down. It’s an interesting story that involves me almost dying thanks to my high pain tolerance and an incompetently stubborn doctor. Maybe one day I’ll take the time to type that all up. Maybe. 😉
But anyway, it would appear that I’m going to spend the rest of the day hacking up phlegm, blowing my nose, chugging water (because I’m super thirsty and haven’t been drinking nearly enough since I’ve gotten sick, and hoping/praying/visualizing my half marathon next Saturday doesn’t completely suck. Because this training cycle sure has…
