January Miles and Goal Check In

The first month of the year has come and gone! Well, almost. I suppose there are a few hours left in the last day of the month. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, did you have any goals for the new year? How are they holding up so far?? I hope you’re totally killing it and making them happen! As far as my goals for 2018 go, well, they really aren’t going at the moment. You can read all about what my goals for the year are here, since I probably wont get into the specifics or reasoning behind them in this post. πŸ™‚

Ever since running my third half marathon in November, I’ve been experiencing some weird anxiety (I say weird, but anxiety is basically just a normal part of my everyday life) issues when I run. Anxiety in general is absolutely no fun, but for me, running usually really helps keep it under control. But for a while there I was experiencing very panic attack-y feelings usually about a mile or two into any given run, that turned into the full blown thing by the time I would get home. Yeah, that was a really rough period of time in my life…Especially when the thing that usually helps, was causing the issue.

I’ve yet to figure outΒ whyΒ that was happening, but I have finally worked through most of it and am able to run without any issues and am definitely enjoying it again! But that’s kinda put a damper on my plans of increasing my weekly running mileage to about 50 miles per week, which is one of my running goals for 2018. I had a whole plan written out and everything, but that’s pretty much out the window at this point. In some ways I feel like I’m starting over from scratch, considering the very small amounts of running I’ve been able to accomplish since November. But at the very least I have been doing a little bit of running, and I’ve still got a couple years of decently consistent running in my legs. So I suppose even though I feel like I’m starting over, I’m really not. Right now this goal looks a bit daunting, but I know if I can pick myself up, brush myself off, and move onward and forward, I can get to where I want to be, as long as I put in the work.

Speaking of putting in the work, well, not much work was done this month. I’ve run a measly 36.87 miles in January thanks to the issues I talked about above. I guess working through that shit is a valid reason to have such a low mileage month, but honestly I’m a little disappointed with myself. I know I can do better and I should do better. But I guess I have the whole month of February (and the rest of the year) to prove that to myself! πŸ™‚

So another one on my goals for this year is to hit my step goalΒ most of the time.Β I know that’s really vague, but I know what that means in my mind and that works for me!! Although I haven’t been doing so hot with hitting that goal either. I downloaded this app called “Habit Bull” that helps me keep track of my goals, so that’s been helping me actually see how often I’m accomplishing what it is that I want to do. As you can see in the photo below, I’m wasn’tΒ doing so great with hitting 10,000 steps initially, but I’ve finally gotten my shit together and am starting to it done! πŸ™‚

And last but not least, I’m also keeping a training log this year! So far I’m doing really well at keeping up with that, and writing down one good thing every single day, which is another thing I want to do for the entire year. I’ve tried keeping other training logs before, but I always end up forgetting to write in them and then by the time I finally remember I can’t remember anything really useful about the workouts I’d forgotten to log. But writing my one good thing for the day keeps me coming back every day and that’s been helping so far. Now we’ll just have to wait and see if I can actually stick with it!

Alrighty then! I feel like I’m still ending January on a pretty decent note and I’m definitely ready to kick some ass and get shit done in February!! Bring it on!!

(Side note; “Wednesday” and “February” are two words that I will literally never learn how to spell correctly. Like, I’ve heard all of the tips and tricks and whatnot that are supposed to help, but they’ve never stuck in my mind. Thank goodness for spell check hahaha!)

Happy First Day Of May!!

Good morning and happy first day of the week AND month!! πŸ™‚

I always love when the first day of the month falls on a Monday! A new week and new month means a fresh start and all that motivational bullshit. Really I just like making new goals for myself and the first day of the week or month (or both in cases like today!) is a great time to do that!

So my goals for this week and month are pretty simple, but that just works better for me. Every time I try to come up with some elaborate plan for myself or just try to do too much at once I end up getting overwhelmed and quitting. So simple is definitely good for me! Anyway, this month I want to run 60 miles and follow the blogilates May workout calendar. That’s pretty simple. I ran 51.73 miles in may, so to hit 60 miles in May all I have to do is one or two more long runs. Easy enough. And it’s been a while since I’ve actually followed a Blogilates workout calendar but I’ve done it several times before, so I should be able to accomplish that as well. πŸ™‚

As far as this week goes, I’m just going to follow my training plan and I’M NOT GOING TO SKIP MY LONG RUN THIS WEEK!!!! Haha I feel like I’ve been skipping out on my long runs a lot lately, so I’m for sure going to run 8-10 miles on either Saturday or Sunday. It’s GOING to happen.

Skipping long runs is actually why my mileage in April was a little lower than I would have liked. I mean, 51.72 miles is by no means bad and I’m glad I went a little over 50 miles for the month, but I would have rather of hit 60-70 ish miles for the month. That’s why I’m specifically aiming for 60 miles for May. Knowing I have a specific goal to work towards usually motivates me to get shit done! πŸ˜‰

Anyways, that’s pretty much all I’ve got for this morning. Today is technically supposed to be my rest day, but it’s chilly and cloudy out this morning and I skipped my long run yesterday, so I’m thinking a nice 5 or 6 mile interval workout would be a lot of fun to do! Well maybe, that depends on how I feel when I get out there, but I’m definitely going to go run! πŸ™‚

February Miles

Between a sore quad one week, and a weekend in Colorado the next, I’m falling a bit behind on my goal of running 1,000 miles this year. Luckily It’s still early enough in the year, so I have plenty of time to make up for it. πŸ™‚

Plus, almost 60 miles in a short month still isn’t bad! I’m actually quite happy with how this month of running went. Especially since my little quad strain didn’t have the chance to develop into a full blown injury. That would have really put a damper on my goal. At least now I’m not injured and I still have some time to do some catching up. πŸ™‚

January Miles

One month down, eleven more to go! 2016 absolutely flew by and it already seems like 2017 is on pace to do the same thing! Maybe it’s just something that happens as you get older, but it seems like every year goes by a little bit faster. Anyway, I feel like I’m off to a pretty decent start this year. 

Not quite the milage I was aiming for, 11 more miles (so, the long run I skipped and one of the extra days I took off) and I would have hit my goal right on the head. I can’t really be too upset though, most months last year I was only hitting 50-60 miles a month, so this is definitely a good starting point for my goal of running 1,000 miles this year. πŸ˜€

I guess my goal for February is to get up to 80 miles (hey, it’s only 28 days long, so I might as well aim for a few less miles πŸ˜‰). Although obviously I wouldn’t mind if I could manage a few more, but we’ll just have to see how that goes. I’m feeling pretty optimistic right now, so hopefully that’ll carry on throughout the next 28 days!

December and 2016 Miles

Ok but seriously, how is it already the last day of December/2016?!? This month and year totally flew by! And not necessarily in a good way, I think. This year wasn’t all that bad for me personally, but I am among one of the many people who are very much ready to bid 2016 adieu. 

Anyway, I made it out of December with 51.51 miles. Not bad considering I’m taking a little break. That’s crazy close to what I ran in November (50.53 miles, if I remember correctly) and I ran a half marathon that month, then took 12 days off. So I’m kinda stoked that I’ve at least been consistent with my monthly mileage these past few months. I’d like to get back up to the 80 miles I ran in October, but that’s going to take some doing. I’m feeling pretty patient about that kinda thing right now though, so I’m willing to wait, work on it, and slowly build back up. πŸ™‚


That brings me to 564.87 miles run in 2016. My goal was to run 500 this year, so I totally crushed it!! I’m trying to decide if I want to aim for 700 or 800 miles in 2017. I know I said I was feeling patient, and I totally am, but I’m going into the new year in better shape and without injury, unlike last year when I was still dealing with hip/shin stuff. And I mean, why not aim a little high? Meh, I guess I  can still wait a few days before I make my decision, but I’m seriously thinking 800 sounds like a good number. I’d have to run close to 70 miles every month (more like a little over 66) and that would be very doable. I could seriously just add two 10 mile long runs to what I’ve already been doing for the past 2 months, and right now I think that’s actually pretty realistic for me. Obviously there are other ways I could go about that, but I do want to start consistently doing 10 milers.

8 Days of Streaking and November Miles

And so far, so good! I had Some pain in my left knee yesterday, but that’s nothing out of the ordinary. I have osgood schlatter in that knee. Apparently this condition runs in my family on both sides, my dad has it, he thinks his dad had it, a cousin on my mom’s side had it, I think my brother may have it… The doctor who diagnosed it said it should have gone away by the time I turned 16, but here I am at 25 still dealing with it. Oh well, it’s really not that bad, just a bit painful, especially when it starts getting colder or wet (so my favorite kind of weather causes my knee pain. Go figure. πŸ™„).

Anyway, the plan after my half marathon was to take some time off (done), participate in the Runner’s World winter streak (currently doing), and start working on speed. So that’s exactly what I’m doing!

On Monday I did a short tempo run. Just one mile. Tempo runs kinda scare me, so I figure I should start doing more of them. Even if they are super short for now. Yesterday I did an easy 30 minute run. Actually, it probably wasn’t easy enough. I definitely need to remember these easy runs should be super easy, so far that hasn’t caused any issues, but it definitely could if I’m not careful. And this morning’s run was an interval workout.

Holy cow, it’s a actually cold outside today! I cannot begin to describe to you how excited I was gearing up for this run! I love running in the cold. The only downside was that it was also kinda windy. Not ideal, but hey, if I have to put up with a little wind to run in the cold, I will. πŸ‘πŸ»

For today’s workout I warmed up with an easy mile, ran for two minutes, walked for a minute, repeated 9 times, then cooled down by walking for about 10 minutes.

Meh, kinda wanted to go a little faster, but that just wasn’t happening today. I had fun though, and at the end of the day I think that’s more important than hitting certain paces. πŸ˜„

Haha honestly though, I think my phone dying halfway through my run kinda threw me off (darn iPhone batteries are so unreliable in the cold…). I mean, I can run just fine without music, but today I was super into my playlist, so having my phone die on me was a bummer and I noticed I was slowing down a bit after that. Maybe this is a good lesson to remember though, and I just won’t take my phone with me next time. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, today’s run brings me to 50.53 miles run in November. Not bad considering I took like, 11 days off. I did run a half marathon though, so I suppose that helped keep my monthly mileage from dropping too low. πŸ˜‰

At this point I don’t have any goals for December, aside for continuing my streak, that is. For now I’m focusing more on time than miles and doing speed work, so I guess we shall see how far that gets me in December. πŸ™‚

Anyways, I need to go eat me some lunch then do me some yoga (sometimes I don’t think I’m constructing such poorly worded sentences ironically anymore. I think I may be stuck like this. Send help! πŸ˜‰ ).

HMT Day 99, Halloween, Honey Stinger, and October Miles

Alright, I’ve got quite a bit to talk about today so I’m just gonna jump right in.

I suppose technically my taper was really supposed to kick into high gear today, although I unintentionally started that last week by only running a total of 8.58 miles. Oops. That was a huuuge drop from the week before that too, I ran 24.11 miles that week and had a lot of fun doing it. At the very least I’m glad I did get all those miles in and a little (well, a lot really) of extra rest probably wont hurt me at this point.

Anyway, started this week off/ended this month with an “easy” 3 miler. Definitely wasn’t as easy as it should have been though. I’m still feeling kinda “bleh” about the whole running thing, although I think I’m finally coming out the other side of this slump I’ve been in. I didn’t want to get out of bed this morning, didn’t feel like making breakfast, and definitely didn’t feel like running, but I turned on my Halloween playlist which got me motivated to get my shit together, and then I did feel a lot better once I started running.

This is my “I’m to lazy to actually make breakfast” breakfast.

I actually felt like finishing my run this morning, which is a huge improvement from last week. I think I cut all of my runs short and I only ran three times, so yeah… The only problem I really had was that my legs wanted to speed up but the rest of me was like “what the heck are you doing?!?” So I ended up going out too fast, and going up a few hills too fast, and then ended up walking up some hills because this was supposed to be an easy run, and for whatever reason I couldn’t seem to go easy up them. I suppose that’s not too bad of a problem to have, but I didn’t want to completely wear myself out. I mean, I have an interval workout tomorrow and I want that to be able to do that without feeling like I’m going to die.

So with this morning’s run, my total mileage for the month of October comes to a grand total of 82.63. I’m pretty sure this is the highest mileage month I’ve ever had, so that’s pretty exciting! I’m thinking that may have something to do with why I felt so shitty last week.

In September I only ran 36.68 miles, but I did have to take a week off, and then kinda ease back into things because of the whole toe indecent, and in August I only made it to 55.15 miles. So I hardcore upped my running game in October, but it wasn’t exactly intentional. I did two 10 milers and one 12 mile long run this month so those definitely added a lot to my total monthly miles. Plus aside from last week, I’ve felt really good this month and I guess this pretty much proves that.

Anyway, I’m very proud of myself for getting so many miles in without hurting myself. That’s super awesome! πŸ™‚

Go me!!

At this point you’ve probably noticed that I’ve been running through a cemetery. I’ve actually done that a few times now this month, because ’tis the season, right? Haha I’m actually not sure about the protocol to this kinda thing. Like I don’t know if I’m aloud to be there, let alone running through there, but I’m quite and respectful, and it’s not a private cemetery or anything, so I don’t see why it would be an issue.

Since today is Halloween I wanted to run through there one more time, because like I said, ’tis the season! Plus it’s its a really old cemetery so there are graves dating back to the 1800’s, a few unknown soldier, and the town’s sheriffs graves are marked with stars that look like your typical sheriff’s badge, and I think that’s all really neat! I figure I should probably stay away during the holiday season though. I don’t want to bother anyone, and I know a lot of people like to visit their relative’s graves around the holidays.

I’ve said it before and I’ll probably say it a million more times before it’s over, October through January is the best part of the year!

We aren’t really doing anything all that exciting for Halloween though. I didn’t get to do any fun Halloween themed runs this year which is kind of a bummer, but oh well, and Luke and I aren’t exactly the party type, so we didn’t/don’t have any parties to go to. I’m ok with that though. We’ve had a lot of fun decorating the house, carving pumpkins, and handing out candy to the neighborhood kids is actually a lot of fun! I can’t wait to see what fun monsters and characters show up at our door tonight! I’m especially excited to see our little next door neighbor. She’s 3 years old and likes to hang out with us and play with our rabbits and dogs, so I’m sure she’ll be excited to show us her costume. πŸ™‚
