Home Sweet Home, Hello August, and Half Marathon Training

Yesterday afternoon Luke and I loaded up all 4 dogs into the truck and then made our way back to Kansas! Yay!! Is there anything better than sleeping in your own bed at night after being away?? 😴😊

Hahaha but before we actually got to sleep in our bed when we got home (at like, 7 pm yesterdayπŸ˜‰) we had some stuff to take care of. Mostly in the garden. After not being tended to for 4 days it was a little bit dry. It didn’t rain at all while we were gone either. But it’s not too bad. We still had to pick a ridiculous amount of tomatoes and even a few cucumbers last night.

So. Many. Tomatoes!!

It did actually rain that night though! We had a nice little thunderstorm roll in which was very much needed! My garden wasn’t the only think looking a little bit dry yesterday, so everything got watered and that’s good. It was a nice way to end July. Really the weather this summer has been pretty mild for the most part here in Kansas, but a little bit of rain was definitely necessary!β›ˆπŸ˜Š

It was still thundering when I woke up this morning, but no more rain. It just missed us. But things were sufficiently wet here, so that wasn’t a big deal.

Anyway, it’s the first day of August!!

That means it’s time to tally up my monthly mileage!

July was a bit of a hectic month. Luke and I hosted two teenagers and kept them entertained. We experienced a heat wave followed by a weird but very welcome cold snap. I twisted my ankle. And Obviously we had our trip to Illinois. So life and my usual clumsy nature definitely happened and were in full effect this month and my mileage clearly reflects that.

That being said, I still pushed through some stuff, squeezed in runs when we were busy, even if that meant losing some sleep. I cut some runs short when I was short on time, but I still did something and that sure beats nothing! And when I got hurt, instead of being stupid and trying to run on my swollen and sore ankle, I gave it the rest it obviously needed. So all in all I’m calling this month a win!

But now that things are finally going to be settling down around here I’m ready to really start putting in some work! Especially since I’m technically 2 weeks into half marathon training. Although I haven’t really gotten much done in that regard since I twisted my ankle last Wednesday. But that ankle is starting to feel much better now!!

I didn’t run today though, but I really needed to rest and recuperate and that’s also a part of training! Honestly I’m just exhausted from all of the running around we did while we were in Illinois. Today it was nice to just sit at home and do nothing. Well, for the most part at least. πŸ˜‰ I still have animals that needed tended to, tomatoes that needed washed, and other chores around the house that needed done. Oh and laundry. I had to do so much laundry. πŸ˜†

But anyway. We’re home! I’m ready to get going at half marathon training! And we are now that much closer to fall!! 53 more days until the Autumn Equinox and 61 more days until the first day of October!! πŸ‚πŸπŸŽƒ

Happy first day of August!

May Miles and Goal Check In

🎢Spring is almost over and the summer’s come and the days are gettin’ long🎢

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, anyone? 🎣

The days are certainly gettin’ long here in Kansas! The sun sets around 8:30 pm this time of year, but full dark doesn’t really happen until around 9. Summer is definitely almost here! Yuck. Summer running is my least favorite. πŸ₯΅ But on the bright side, at least I have a treadmill for days when doing hard workouts outside would be unbearable! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ˜†

Anyway, May was an interesting month. I got sick, had a 5k race, picked up a new sport, and traveled to Minnesota. Plus all of our usual daily/summer activities like caring for chickens and all of the other animals. Planting and now tending the garden. And yard work of course. It’s a lot to jam into 4 weeks. πŸ˜‚

So needless to say my running mileage has suffered a little bit since April (44.32 miles. Another weird month) and A LOT since March (87.92 miles. A very good month! πŸ™‚). This month’s grand total comes to 39.78 miles.

Hahaha yeah, I’m not too happy about that. But life happened as it sometimes does. There was really nothing I could do about that terrible cold I got. It took me FOREVER to get over that. And I picked family time over running time while we were in Minnesota. A very good choice that I was willing to make. Sometimes you need to make sacrifices in life for running. Other times you need to make sacrifices in running for life. πŸ˜ŠπŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ‘πŸ»

The rest of my goals were kind of all over the place as well.

Honestly I’ve been eating like shit pretty much all month. I’ve been journaling off and on, and this definitely wasn’t the best month as far as my step goal goes.

But now for the most part all of the craziness that has been the last few months should be calming down. Now it’s time to buckle down and GET SHIT DONE! I’m ready to spend the next month or so building my mileage back up and then start training for Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days: Take Two later in July! Bring. It. On!! πŸ’ͺπŸ»πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ€˜πŸ»

Wishing you a very happy June!

March Miles and Goal Check In

Happy first day of April!!!

Seriously though, wasn’t it just the first day of February like, 2 days ago?? πŸ˜‚

These last few months have just been flying by! My first race of 2019 is almost here! I almost can’t believe it! I’m getting pretty excited though! I don’t have any expectations for this race whatsoever, because it’s my first trail race, it’s at altitude, and I’m running it with my dad. That being said I actually feel pretty ready for it, even though I’ve literally done 0 trail running to prepare. πŸ˜‚

Anyway, I’m just gonna do a quick check in this month since I’m working on quite a few things this year and have already talked about most of them pretty thoroughly in other posts. So, let’s start off with my monthly mileage! 😊

87.92 miles run in March! Whoohoo!! I’m very happy with how my running has been going lately! I’ve really just been putting in the work and grinding it out! Sure it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows, but for the most part I’ve been feeling great! Getting in some pretty good speed workout, but mostly just getting in the miles. Honestly that is my biggest goal and focus for the year. Being consistent with my mileage and then slowly but surely upping it.

I’ve definitely been on the right track with that! These last two or three weeks have all been over 20 miles of running which is pretty darn good for me! I hit 24 last week and I’m super stoked about that! I’m hoping to hit 25 this week. 😁 After that though I plan on backing off just a bit, since that’ll be a race week. But seriously, I feel like I’m on a real roll right now! I’m currently at 243.46 miles run for the year and if I keep heading in this direction I should hit my goal of 1,000 miles in 2019 without too much trouble! 😊

Most of my other goals for 2019 really just revolve around keeping me healthy and injury free so I can run all of the miles I’m aiming for. πŸ˜‚ Things like doing my yoga (Check!), eating more healthy foods (Check!), getting enough sleep and recovery (check and check!), etc. Obviously that’s all working so far as I haven’t had any issues! That’s quite an accomplishment for this injury prone runner! πŸ˜‰

And of course I’m still focusing on my step goal! Running is one thing, but it can be kinda easy to run in the morning and then not move much for the rest of the day. πŸ˜‚ That’s why I like to have a step goal and to keep track of whether or not I hit it everyday, using the app “HabitBull”.

Hahaha I think it’s pretty obvious that I’ve been taking rest days of Friday’s and Sundays. πŸ˜‰ I’m not super thrilled that I went three days in a row without hitting my goal earlier this month, but after that I was pretty consistent and I’m very happy with that! 😊

Alrighty! I think that pretty much covers everything for a quick little update!

Wishing you a very happy April!

February Miles and Goal Check In

Happy last day of February, friends!

It’s looking like winter is still going to be hanging around for a while! We’re getting another bout of super cold weather.

Anyway, February ended up being a good month for me running-wise! Like, really good! It has been a LONG time since I’ve felt really good running. That I’ve felt a sort of freedom and joy that only running could bring me. I’m talking years here, people. Looking back, 2017 and 2018 were just a huge struggle for me in this department. Sure, there were a few moments when running felt really good or really fun in those two years, but for the most part they were kind of a miserable grind. Like, no matter what I did I was just stuck in the same place and it was just getting increasingly more frustrating!

That all changed about two weeks ago though. Something just kinda clicked in place and now I’m experiencing that joy and freedom again. I haven’t had this much fun or felt this freaking good while running in two years! So I’m pretty excited right now! I’m just out there crushing workouts and having an absolute blast doing it!

Unfortunately my run today didn’t exactly fit into the super duper fun category. Like I said, we’re experiencing more super cold weather, so I took to the treadmill for my last run in February. It wasn’t all that exciting, but I still felt pretty good doing it! And that brings me to 85.65 miles run in February! That’s almost 16 more miles than last month! And January was longer than this month hahaha. πŸ˜‰ So I’m pretty happy about that. 😊

Alrighty! Onto goals goals goals! So this year I’m working on being a stronger, more well rounded athlete, and honestly that’s probably why I’m feeling so great in my running all of a sudden! πŸ˜‰ I’ve been making a point to get in at the very least one 30 minute strength training session in a week. I know it’s not a lot, but it’s more than I was doing for a while! I’ve been kinda slacking on the specific workout that I had planned on doing every Thursday, but I have been sticking with doing Pilates and I’ll gladly take it! πŸ™‚

I haven’t been doing super great about eating better. There’s still a bunch of junk that I could cut out of my diet and I definitely need to add in more vegetables. I gained about 5 pounds over the holidays and I still haven’t been able to shake that. So there’s something I really need to work on.

I’ve also been kinda slacking on getting yoga, stretching, and foam rolling done. And I can really feel it! I’m definitely more stiff and tight! But right here, right now, I’m commenting to getting back into the habit of stretching and foam rolling! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ˜Š

Lets see what else….oh yes, steps and journaling!

So, between the crazy cold and having more dental work done this month, so hitting my step goals has gone to the wayside several times. Honestly I like having this goal because it gives me motivation to get up and moving throughout the day, but I’m also pretty glad that I don’t super obsess over it. I’ve gotten close on some of those red days, but didn’t hit it and that’s been ok with me. 😁

And last but not least, I’ve been keeping up with my training journal! Yay me!! 😊

So this month has been really good in some areas! I’ve definitely got some things to work on, but all in all I’m just happy that my running has been so great! πŸ˜‚ Here’s hoping it stays that way! I’m thinking it will. I’m also thinking that 2019 is going to end up being a great year for me as it pertains to running. 😁

Wishing everyone a very happy March!

January Miles and Goal Check In

It’s the last day of January! Finally!! Does anyone else feel like January was at least 25586337 days this year?? Like, New Year’s Eve was so long ago! Christmas? Ha! I can’t remember that far back!

I don’t know man, it just feels like October, November, and December just FLEW by so January had to make up for all of that. πŸ˜‚

Anyway, this super slow month brought with it a crazy snow storm, Finn and Dean’s birthday’s, a few home improvement projects, a super exciting thing that I can’t tell you about yet (soon though!), rain and ice, and now this whole polar vortex thing. Some of that definitely slowed down getting in my step goal some days (you just can’t be outside for extended periods of time when it’s below 0 out and that makes getting in steps harder), but I sure didn’t let that stop me from getting some decent running mileage in!! Heck, I ran 4 miles in the middle of the crazy snow storm earlier this month, and braved a lot of the ice, and cold, and other “bad” weather we’ve had. Hahaha that’s not really asking much of me though, I kinda love it. β„οΈπŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚ There we’re some days where I just had to hit the treadmill though. Not ideal in my winter loving world, but at least I got shit done! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ˜Š

I ended my month with a 3 miler this morning and that brings me to a total of 69.89 miles for the month of January! I’m not quite on track to hit 1,000 miles in 2019 at this point, but I’m not too worried about that right now. I’m slowly building up and I’m pretty confident that I can hit that goal this year. 😊

As for my other goals, I’ve definitely been heading in the right direction! I’ve got done time goals that I’d like to accomplish this year so I’ve been focusing on getting stronger, more resilient, and more well rounded as an athlete. I’ve been doing some speed work yes, but right now I’m really focusing on getting stronger! And that means hill workouts and actually doing some real strength training session. So far so good!!

Kind of going along with strength, I’ve decided to work on headstands again, just for fun! I used to be really good at them but I just kinda stopped working on them for a while. Probably because I stopped seeing yoga as a way to get stronger and instead was only really focusing on the stretching aspect of it. But anyway, I’ve been practicing headstands again and I’m remembering how much of a arm/shoulder/ab workout they can be. πŸ˜‚ It’s been fun though! I’m pretty stoked to see that I haven’t completely lost my headstand skills. 😊

Like I mentioned before, some of the weather has kind of impeded on me hitting my step goal as often as I would like, but still not doing terrible at it! Hahaha honestly the dogs are the ones suffering the most in this aspect! Usually I hit my step goal pretty easily because I run and then will walk a couple of dogs. But on some of these super cold or icy days I just haven’t been able to take them out. Still though, I didn’t do too bad at this one. 😊

I use the app β€œHabitBull” to track the days o hit my step goal. 😊

Let’s see, I also wanted to focus a little more on 1 percent-ers this year. Yoga, foam rolling, getting enough sleep, things of that nature. I’d say so far I’m doing pretty well with all of that. But really I also need to focus on warming up before I run. πŸ˜‚ Baby steps though. I’ve just gotten back into regularly foam rolling this month. So one little thing at a time. πŸ˜‰ Another thing I wanted to do was focus on nutrition. I’ve definitely managed to clean up my diet a lot this month. Now I really need to focus on getting enough protein in my diet. I’m kinda terrible at that. πŸ˜‚

And last but not least, I want to successfully keep a training log this year! I kind of did off and on last year, but I definitely wasn’t consistent enough with it for it to really be of any use to me. But for my birthday in November my husband got me a Believe Training Journal and I’ve been filling that out since December! Honestly it’s a super easy training journal to keep up with! It’s super pretty and full of little extra writing prompts and whatnot. I love it! 😊

Alrighty! I believe that covers just about everything!

Wishing you a very happy February!

November Miles and Goal Check In

After a not-so-successful Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days, one recovery week, one 5k Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, and slowly starting to work my way back into a normal running routine, I’m ending November with 57.95 miles! November has had its ups and downs running wise, but overall I’m happy with how I’m ending this month. πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ˜

Alrighty! As for my other goals, well, I kinda took a little break from them! Since Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days was my big goal for November I figured I could use a little break from everything else. Especially since I took about a week off from running and have just been slowly working my way back into a regular running routine. It didn’t really make sense to me to be trying to hit 10,000 steps everyday or trying to journal about everything since I have kinda fallen out of that habit anyway.

But now that a new month is upon us and I’m pretty much back into my usual running routine (but in a much more laud back fashion πŸ˜‰) I’m getting right back into it!

I’ve also been thinking about what my goals for the upcoming year are going to look like. I’ve been thinking about that a lot since all of my racing for the year is done. I’m thinking my goals for 2019 are going to involve a lot of time goals. I didn’t really have any this year and I ended up not PRing my times for anything. That’s not a huge deal considering I’ve still made quite a bit of progress this year, just in a different way. But I sure have missed getting this shiny new PRs so that’s what I’m going to be focusing on! Among a few other things, of course. πŸ˜‰

But that’s another blog post for another day! Wishing you a very merry December!! πŸŽ…πŸ»πŸ¦ŒπŸŽ„πŸŽπŸ·πŸͺ❀️
