Weekly Recap: April 30th-May 6th, 2018

This week brought with it warm weather, humidity, thunderstorms, and more severe weather. So basically normal spring time stuff here in the Midwest! On Wednesday night we even had two tornado’s forming in the area and were predicted to have wind gusts of over 70 miles per hour! Luckily nothing came of that and we just ended up getting some rain, thunder, and lightning. But to be on the safe side, the chickens got moved back into the spare bedroom and spent the night there haha. Luke and I both figured that it would be better to have them make a huge mess in there than it would have been for them to get hurt or blown away in the severe weather. But like I said, nothing ended up really happening so that was good. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_1408

Anyways, I know I’m always talking about the weather and I’m sure that can get a little boring some times, but it’s usually a pretty big factor in my world. Between my garden, my animals, and my running, the weather is something I pay a lot of attention to. And like I said, this week brought some thunderstorms, and while I do love me some thunderstorms, the rain makes it super humid and muggy out and that kinda stuff absolutelyย drainsย me and doesn’t help my asthma situation (luckily that never really gets too bad). So since this was really the first humid week we’ve had this year (and one of the warmest so far) things did not go as planned. I always go through a super rough adjustment period when it starts getting hot and muggy out and it takes a while for me to somewhat adjust. Haha but I’ll adamantly tell you that I never actually adjust and that I was just born to reside in colder climates. ๐Ÿ˜‰

while that might not be necessarily true, I’m still not a fan of this kind of weather and my running tends to suffer because of that.

Monday:

  • 3 miles
  • 10 minutes of strength work

Hot. Humid. Windy. That pretty much sums up Monday’s run. Wasn’t a fan hahaha.

img_1373

Tuesday:

  • rest day

Yeah, just couldn’t do it haha. After Monday’s run I was tired, and just bleh. But like I’ve said, humid weather does that to me. While I didn’t run on Tuesday Luke and I did end up doing some yard work before some of the rain came. He mowed the lawn, I did a bunch of weed eating, and we cleaned out our shed. Not really exciting stuff, but it needed done.

Wednesday:ย

  • 4 miles
  • 30 minutes of yoga

It rained late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. So it was pretty gross out side when I ran. Yuck. I felt pretty terrible during and afterwards. But I did a little something and that’s all that matters. ๐Ÿ™‚

Then of course Wednesday night was when we had the severe weather scare. But luckily nothing really ended up happening.

img_1394

Thursday:

  • rest day

Nope nope nope nope nope. Not feeling it. Plus my calves were super duper tight and I’m not sure what that was all about. Weird. So no running for me. But I did do a little bit of work in the garden. Picked up dog poop and trash and what not. Then later in the day my 4 year old neighbor came over and she helped me clean out the chicken coop haha. I told her mom that every time she comes over I put her to work! But she has fun doing it, so it’s a win win for everyone. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Friday:

  • 3 miles
  • planted tomatoes and peppers

We had another small storm come through on Thursday night, so that meant more humidity on Friday morning. Yuck. Haha but on the bright side, all of the rain has made the grass and trees super duper green, so it’s really pretty out right now.

Haha and gardening totally counts as a workout! On Friday we went out and got most of the plants we wanted for this year so Luke did all of the hard work by tilling the big area that we grow our tomatoes and peppers in and then I planted them. ๐Ÿ™‚ So far they’re all looking really good out there!

Saturday:

  • 6.5 miles
  • 1 hour on the stationary bike

Ewww. This run. This run was not fun. The original plan was 8 miles, and I had even thought to myself that if I felt really good I might even go for 10! Obviously I didn’t feel really good though haha. I was absolutely and completely done by about mile 5. But I pushed through another mile and a half before I finally called it quits. Adjusting to the warm, humid, sunny weather is always a long and difficult process for me. But I think sticking it out there for as long as I did on Saturday probably helped some. And then later in the afternoon I was bored so I figured I might as well hop on the stationary bike for a bit. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyway, this run did kind make me a bit nervous for the 5k I’m doing next week. I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be warm and sunny and I obviously don’t do well in that kind of weather haha. Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to see what happens.

Sunday:

  • more work in the garden

I can’t really call today a rest day because I feel like I didn’t really do much resting. Plus I did a lot of weed whacking around the yard and pulled weeds out of the tomato/pepper patch and now my arms feel like jello hahaha. So I mean, working in the garden totally counts as cross training in my book!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_1491-1

Total Weekly Mileage: 16.63

Not exactly what I’ve been aiming for, but considering the heat, humidity, and my weirdly tight calves, I’ll gladly take it! All in all I’d say it wasn’t a bad week. Definitely not a great week, but still not bad! I’ve got the Running With The Cows 5k next week and I’m getting pretty excited about that! It should be lots of fun!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, I hope you’ve had a great week!

Weekly Recap: March 19th-25th, 2018

Spring is here, here in Kansas! At least for now. The Midwest can get kinda weird with the weather sometimes haha. But the highs have been mostly in the 50’s and 60’s this week, and of course I’m kinda sad to see winter go. But it’s sill pretty chilly in the mornings and evenings, so I haven’t really been experiencing any warmer weather running yet, since I typically run in the morning. Honestly though I should probably be trying to run during the warmer parts of the day, to help make transitioning to summer running and super hot weather just a little bit easier, but I’m just not ready to commit to that yet. I am a cold weather runner through and through. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The spring like weather has also brought some rain too, as it usually does here in the Midwest. We really needed it. It’s been pretty dry here lately. Plus I love rainy weather and think running in it is a lot of fun! Maybe that’s one of the reasons I’ve felt a little bit more motivated to run this week! Last week life kinda got in the way of running and instead of adjusting and making it happen, I let it fall to the wayside. But As predicted in my weekly recap last week, this week was better. ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday:

  • 3 easy miles
  • 35 minutes of yoga

It started raining late Sunday night and pretty much never stopped until later in the afternoon on Monday. Good thing I enjoy rainy runs! Because unless I wanted to wait until well after 3 pm (which I never want to do. Morning runs are more my jam), I was going to get wet during this run. Which I definitely did. Well, soaked is more like it! It was a lot of fun though, as most rainy runs are!

But I think I got frostnip on my legs. It was in the high 30’s/low 40’s and pouring down rain, and I wasย almostย dressed appropriately. I should have worn my wind pants over my running tights, because when I got home, wrestled myself out of my running gear, and hopped in the shower, I noticed the tops of my thighs were super red. That ended up being kinda itchy and uncomfortable for the rest of the morning but as I warmed up it mostly went away. Haha good thing I wasn’t out there any longer or I might have actually ended up with frostbite or hypothermia. Lesson learned; when in doubt, wear the second pair of pants.

img_0458-1

Tuesday:ย

  • 2 easy miles
  • 10 minutes of ab work

Yeah, this run didn’t feel easy. But I got most of it done without too many issues. Haha I was supposed to do 2 easy miles followed by a couple of 20 second strides, but I kinda skipped those. Still doing better than last week though! I feel like that’s becoming my mantra for this week. Hey, it totally works though! Did some ab work later in the day, and was very much looking forward to my rest day on Wednesday.

img_0469

Wednesday:ย

  • Rest Day
  • 40 minutes of yoga

I was definitely ready for this rest day haha. Did some restorative yoga, walked Lily, cleaned the house. It was nice. ๐Ÿ™‚ And since I don’t have any other photos from Wednesday, lets just take a second to appreciate how big my chicks are getting! I am so freaking excited about getting fresh eggs!!!

img_0494.jpg

Thursday:

  • 1 hour on the stationary bike

On Tuesday I was kind of excited about having a rest day followed by a cross training day, but once I got there I felt kinda meh about the whole situation. I don’t particularly enjoy cross training. I think my stationary bike is super boring. But it is a necessary evil. ๐Ÿ˜‰ So I spent an hour pedaling on my stationary bike, while day dreaming about the interval workout I had planned for Friday morning.

img_0514

Friday:ย

  • Interval work

Speed work! Yay!! Did a 1 mile warm up, 30 minutes of intervals (1 minute of hard running, 30 seconds of recovery, followed by a 1 mile cool down. Haha a lot of that cool down was walking though. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Seriously though, this workout was so much fun! Hard. Really hard, considering I haven’t done any kind of actual speed work in forever. But it felt really good. Haha now if only I could hold that 7:35 pace for an extended period of time. That happened while running downhill with reckless abandon though. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I really should have done some stretching and foam rolling after that, but holy cow I was tired! I spend the rest of the day doing a whole lot of nothing. Totally worth it.

Anyway, my fancy new Oiselle running tights with all the pockets were supposed to show up on Friday but they never did. This is why I dislike the UPS. Every single time I order something online and it ships via UPS it ends up taking several more days than it’s supposed to to actually arrive. So I guess we’ll see when they show up…

Saturday:

  • 2 easy miles
  • 20 minutes of strength work

Turkey socks in March? Why not?! ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚

Actually, my feet were a little sore and the only compression gear I have that actually goes on my feet are holiday themed.๐Ÿ˜‰ But I mean, weโ€™re only a few days into spring and Iโ€™m already excited for fall. ๐Ÿ˜‚Anyway, the compression socks definitely helped, but my left heel was still kinda sore and that usually means my left IT band isnโ€™t happy. Running on cambered roads does that to me sometimes. Especially when I donโ€™t pay enough attention to my hips. Itโ€™s all connected, baby! So I cut my run short and followed it with some strength moves for my hips. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Sunday:

  • Rest Day
  • 40 minutes of stretching/foam rolling

Stayed up a little too late last night, slept like shit, woke up sore. Haha good thing it’s a rest day! I’m really glad that I ended up cutting my run a little short yesterday, because holy cow is my left IT band tight today! Luckily it’s not in any kind of pain though. My knee also doesn’t hurt and my left heel is feeling a lot better. All good signs. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve had troubles with this IT band before, but this time I think I caught it before it turned into actual IT band syndrome. Yay for listening to my body!! I wonder if my running form has changed because of my broken toe though. At this point it doesn’t really hurt at all and the toe seems to be back to normal, but I suppose that doesn’t mean I’m not doing something different with my left foot and just not noticing it. I really can’t think of another reason as to why my IT band would be acting up again. Especially since I’ve barely been running 10 miles a week and haven’t done anything to exciting besides my speed workout on Wednesday. Hmmm. Oh well, at least I’ve realized it’s on its way to becoming a problem and have started giving it a little extra love.

Today I took an Epsom salt bath, and spent some time on my yoga mat stretching my hips, IT band and foam rolling everything. Hopefully it just needed some attention and doesn’t turn into a thing, but it’s definitely something I’m going to be paying attention to.

img_0578

So what about you?? How was your week? Has your IT band ever given you trouble before? What did you do for it?

Happy Sunday everyone!!

Weekly Recap: February 19th-25th, 2018

No weekly recap from last week because last week was pretty boring haha. Spent a lot of time resting and icing my toe, hoping that it would heal quickly. Luckily all of that resting seemed to pay off! My toe has been feeling a lot better and I’ve been able to walk on it a lot better. It seems to get a little bit better everyday. ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday:ย

  • 25 minutes of strength training
  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike

Was finally able to take Lily for a walk on Monday! ๐Ÿ™‚ Haha poor Lily, it’s been almost 2 weeks since she’s been on a walk. Dean and Finn don’t mind, they like to spend most of their time in the backyard running around, chasing each other, and barking at squirrels. But Lily has separation anxiety and wont do that. So she’s been quite worked up since she’s been just as stuck inside as I have. But we fixed that on Monday. ๐Ÿ™‚ Followed up our walk with some strength work and time on my stationary bike.

img_9762.jpg

Tuesday:ย

  • Rest Day

Monday started out at around 67 degrees with thunderstorms in the forecast. But all the the temperature dropped and by Tuesday the thunderstorms had turned into ice and snow. That was kind of interesting! I’ve seen a thunder snow before (which is just a snow storm with thunder and lighting), but Tuesday was the first time I’d ever seen an ice storm with thunder and lighting. That’s the Midwest for you, I suppose haha.

So thanks to all of the ice and the little bit of snow on the ground, Luke couldn’t make it to work. He tried, but the roads were terrible and our car doesn’t have heat so the ice that was still coming down was freezing to his windshield, so he could hardly see. He didn’t make it very far before he had to turn around and come home. So we used that as an opportunity to hang out all day, cuddled up on the couch with all three dogs and both cats, and playing video games, and watching YouTube videos and finishing an anime series that we’d started at some point a week or so ago. It was nice! ๐Ÿ™‚

img_9774

My sweet boys Dean and Finn are best friends. โค

Wednesday:ย

  • 30 minutes of strength work
  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 20 minutes of yoga

By Wednesday my toe was feeling good enough for me to want to experiment with running on it! But the roads were still pretty icy from the ice storm on Tuesday and I definitely didn’t want to aggravate the injury by running on ice. So I decided to work on my biggest weakness instead; my upper body. Mainly my arms. They’re kind of pathetically weak haha. So I did about 30 minutes of body weight exercises with them and with a little bit of ab work thrown in just for fun. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Followed that up with some time on my stationary bike and then did a little bit of yoga in the afternoon.

img_9793

Thursday:ย

  • 2.5 miles
  • 20 minutes of stretching/foam rolling

Hi my name is Ashley and I’m really good at making really bad decisions. Like attempting to run 2.5 miles on a probably broken toe on roads that were covered in black ice. Like I said, my toe is feeling a lot better, but running on ice still seems like a bad idea. But they had salted the roads at least twice by Thursday morning so how bad could they really be, right? Crazy icy. Super slippery. That’s the answer to that question haha. Lots of slipping, sliding, and walking happened. Oh and lots of laughing too, because the whole situation was just hilarious and I thought it was great. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_9807

Friday:ย

  • 45 minutes on the stationary bike

Yesterday Luke’s sister and her oldest son came to Kansas from Oklahoma to see a concert in Kansas City. So before they went to their show we all went out to dinner along with Luke’ brother, his brother’s girlfriend and her kids (who we just met for the very first time last night). We all ended up having a lot of fun! We don’t really get to see Luke’s sister or her kids (she also has 2 younger kids she didn’t have with her). The last time we got to hang out was during our family trip last summer, so it was nice to see them and hang out for a little bit! And meeting my brother-in-laws girlfriend and her kids was nice as well. Her kids are very sweet and she seems really nice. Haha But anyway, long periods of social interaction with big groups of people wear me out! I’m kind of an introvert by nature so that’s pretty typical. So on Friday I kind of needed to rest and recharge. Plus I’m still not so sure about my whole toe situation, so I kinda figured running two days in a row probably wasn’t a great idea, so I stuck with my stationary bike instead. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Saturday:

  • travel day

On Saturday I ended up going to Colorado with my dad! We had an eventful day and did some pretty fun stuff. You can read about all of that here. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_9839-1

Sunday:

  • sight seeing day

My mom, dad, and I spend most of today out sight seeing and doing a bunch of other fun stuff. It’s a lot to post about here, but I’ll talk all about that in another post soon. ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_9927

I hope everyone has had a good week!

Greetings from Colorado!

Running In A Severe Thunderstorm Is A Great Way To Add A Little Danger To Your Running Routine

First, let me preface this post by saying I don’t recommend running during severe weather. Along with the obvious risk of getting struck by lightning, there’s also a chance of getting hailed on, getting hit with tree branches or other debris, and if is raining hard enough it may be difficult for drivers to see you, which can get very dangerous.

Also, I didn’t go out and run during this “dangerous” thunderstorm (as the weatherbug app called it) on purpose. That just kinda happened because I decided that checking the weather once was probably good enough. It was not haha.

So let me explain what went down this morning…

I woke up and got out of bed at 5 am, as I’ve been doing for the last week and a half ish. I made coffee, ate breakfast, then got dressed and checked the weather bug app while I drake my coffee and sipped on some water.

According to weatherbug, we were under a dangerous thunderstorm alert until 6 am, so I checked the radar, and saw that yes there was a chance that we were going to get hit with a pretty bad storm, but the dark orange section of this storm on the radar map was relatively small and it looked like it might not hit us at all. I decided that I was probably going to get rained on and experience a little bit of thunder and lightning since it looked like the yellow section of the storm on the radar map was coming right at us, but I figured that since the dangerous thunderstorm alert ended at 6 I should be ok. After that I didn’t bother to check the weather again and that ended up being a huge mistake.

I set out on to do my 4 miler at 5:30 am. Still assuming that the dangerous thunderstorm alert ended in half an hour and that I’d probably be ok to run. Plus even though I know it’s probably not the best idea, I do like running in thunderstorms as long as they aren’t too bad, so I was actually kind of excited!

Initially I was seeing a lot of lightning, but I didn’t really think much of it. A lot of thunderstorms here in the Midwest produce a lot of lightning, even if the storm really isn’t all that bad. Plus it hadn’t even started raining or really thundering yet so I thought I was going to be able to finish my 4 miler without any problems.

I was a little over half a mile in when it started to sprinkle a little bit, but I like running in the rain, so I wasn’t worried about it at all. When I was about a mile in, the wind started to pick up and the temperature started to drop very quickly. I think it ended up dropping close to 10 degrees actually. That’s when I started to get a little bit worried. A minute or two after I started to worry about this storm, there was a huge flash of lighting and a loud boom of thunder.

That’s when I knew that things were going to get really bad and that I should probably start heading home. So I ran passed the street I was originally going to turn on and turned onto my street instead. At that point it was absolutely pouringย down rain, the wind was getting crazy bad, tree branches were falling down, I got hit with a few stray leaves and sticks (luckily it was nothing too big. That probably would have ended badly), and there was a lot of really big lightning bolts and very loud thunder. And I was still almost a mile away from home.

I kept on trucking though and I made it home without indecent! I ended up stopping at 1.78 miles, which was super unsatisfying, but there was no way I was going to try to get in that last almost .2 miles done during that storm.

Processed with Rookie Cam

I actually made it home right before Luke left for work, so I got to talk to him for a little bit. And don’t worry, he did in fact tell me that I was crazy and that I probably should have waited to run haha. After he left I did a little bit of yoga to try to loosen up my calves (they were feeling quite tight today) and then I sat in my wet running gear for probably around 30 minutes while I waited for the storm worst of the storm to pass.

So once the really bad part of the storm was over (and this time I made sure to check the weather several ย times before I went back out ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) I set out to finish my run. It was still raining and there was a little bit of thunder and lighting, but it wasn’t too bad. So I was excited about that! Those are the kind of thunderstorms I like to run it haha. But unfortunately after sitting around for a while I just wasn’t feeling the whole running thing anymore. I was cold and my legs were feeling really tight (probably from sitting around in wet clothes) and I just wasn’t having fun anymore. So I did another 2 miles, decided that that got me close enough to 4 miles for the day, and then called it quits.

Processed with Rookie Cam

While finishing up those 2 miles, I ran past the street that I hadย almostย run down earlier and I am very glad that I ended up turning onto my street instead. There are so many downed tree limbs in one part of that street, that they’re almost completely blocking part of the road. It’s a very good thing I didn’t decided to take that way home, because that probably wouldn’t have ended well for me…

I mean, there are downed tree limbs everywhere now, but it looked like that street was the worst. Luckily the worst damage to storm did to us was knock a decent sized branch onto the garden fence. It didn’t even hit any of the plants! So we got off pretty easy. My next door neighbor has a huge tree limb on his roof now. I sure hope it didn’t damage his roof. It doesn’t look too bad, but I guess it’s kinda hard to tell.

img_4057

Anyway, it’s almost 10 am as I type this, and the sun is shining, the birds are chirpping, and it’s looking like it’s going to be another beautiful, albeit hot and humid, day. Eventually I’m going to have to go out and enjoy it (and probably complain about how hot it is haha), but for now I’m thinking I need to take a little nap. My little storm chasing adventure kinda wore me out! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Happy Hump Day!

~Ashley

Thursday Things

The weather has been…well, I was going to say crazy, but I suppose it’s actually pretty typical for the Midwest haha. All week we’ve been alternating between sunny and storming. Seriously, one minute it will be absolutely beautiful outside but then the next it will be pouring down rain. But like I said, that’s pretty typical around here during this time of year.

What wasn’t exactly typical was the amount of hail that we got on Tuesday. It for realย poured down hail for 2-3 minutes. It wasn’t the biggest hail I’ve ever seen, but it was most definitely the largest quantity of hail I’ve ever witnessed falling from the sky.

img_3739

This was taken 10 or 15 minutes after the storm had stopped so a lot of it had already melted. But there was still quite a bit of it on the ground.

Luckily after the hail storm on Tuesday we’ve only had a bunch of rain and scattered storms. I don’t know if my garden could recover from another beating from hail like that. A lot of my plant’s have holes in the leaves and are looking a little beat up, but they are recovering which is good. ๐Ÿ™‚

After a short run yesterday, I spent quite a bit of time tending to my poor injured plants. I pulled off broken leaves and branches, pulled flowers off of my tomato plants and little tiny cucumbers from my cucumber plants (the plant’s aren’t big enough for me to want them to be producing anything yet). I also did a bit of tilling andย a bunchย of weeding.

img_3748

The joys of gardening. ๐Ÿ™‚

Our lawn mower can’t really fit into our garden plot so that means I’m doing a lot of grass pulling in and around my little garden plots, and along the fence that we share with our neighbor as well. Eventually I got tired of grass pulling, so I decided to kill like, three birds with one stone, and move the rabbit hutch into the garden. When Luke and I built the rabbit hutch, we made it without a bottom so that we could move it around the yard and the rabbits could eat as much grass as they wanted. So by moving it into the garden, the rabbits will get to eat as much grass as they want, their poop will fertilize the ground wherever they are (bunny poop makes GREAT fertilizer!), and the grass in the garden will get mowed down. So it’s a win win win situation. ๐Ÿ™‚ Well, it would be if I could keep them out there for more than a few hours at a time. All this rain has kinda put a damper on that situation, but eventually it’ll all work out.

img_3743

Finn’s not a fan of his rabbits being separated from him by a fence.

After all the work I put into the garden yesterday, I woke up super sore pretty much everywhere this morning. Especially in my upper back and triceps. That’s ok though, I could definitely use some more upper body strength anyway. ๐Ÿ˜‰ And even though I haven’t exactly been doing a lot of running lately, Thursday’s are usually my rest days, so that worked out quite nicely. ๐Ÿ™‚

So anyway, I spent my rest day dyeing my hair (something I’ve been procrastination for far too long), attempting to get rid of some of the mud that’s taken over my house, playing with the dogs, waiting for my package from Honey Stinger to get here, signed up for a nifty running challenge for the month of June that I saw on Instagram, and thought about my plans for running in general this summer.

img_3756

This is a 3+ hour process, so no it’s no wonder than I put it off until Iย absolutelyย have to do it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Whenever I’m in the process of dyeing my hair, it’s kinda hard for me to do any kind of workout because the dye would just get everywhere, so that was pretty much out of the question all afternoon. But I can usually do most of my usual chores without any issues. Soย I didn’t exactly get the house completely clean, but I’ve definitely made some progress at ridding the dirt and mud from the floor and that’s a step in the right direction.

I walked Finn this morning because he was being a little spaz but I didn’t get a chance to walk Lily or Finn since who wants to walk around their neighborhood with bleach in their hair? Plus I would imagine that dust, dirt, and other grossness would stick to it, and that would be no bueno. So we played a bunch of fetch instead and then they went absolutely banana’s when the Fedex guy bearing my package from Honey Stinger came by. Haha my dog absolutely hate Fedex, UPS, and our mail lady. I always feel bad because none of those people stop and wait for me to answer the door anymore. They just leave packages on the porch. I don’t blame them though. I mean, my dogs sound vicious when they think their territory or people are under any kind of threat.

Anyway, the Fedex guy got here around 4:45 pm and I was super excited to see him, well you know, briefly because they never hang around long because of the dogs. But anyway, I’ve been super stoked about the stuff I ordered from Honey stinger! ๐Ÿ™‚ I finally got my hands on a box of one of the new flavors of waffles and I can’t wait to try it! I love mint chocolate anything, so I’m sure it will be right up my alley. ๐Ÿ™‚ I actually thought about trying both new flavors, but I wasn’t feeling that adventurous, so I opted for my two usual favorite Honey Stinger waffle flavors; chocolate and ginger snap. I also got me a thing of honey, because I can always use more honey, and a draw string back pack. Mostly because I needed to go over $50 to get free shipping and I was already super close and it was pretty cheap, but I also figured it would come in handy for the trip to Florida that we are taking with Luke’s family in July (and eventually I’ll write a post talking about our Florida plans, but today is not that day ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). So yeah, I’m super duper excited about all of that! Now I’m all stocked up on fuel for the summer and the beginning of half marathon training, which starts later in July! Yay!

Processed with Rookie Cam

As far as my running goes, well, it hasn’t been all that great. Between being sick, traveling to Illinois, a week long anxiety attack thing (another post for another day), and a lack of motivation now that it’s getting pretty hot and humid out, I only ran a total of 30.59 miles for the month of May. That’s really sad. Especially since I’ve been trying (and miserably failing) to really up my weekly and monthly mileage.

So this morning on Instagram, someone had posted about one of these challengeville challenges. I thought they sounded like a lot of fun, so I looked through them all, decided that the TinMan would be perfect for me! Mostly because I’ve kinda been stuck at running 15-18 miles per week for what feels like forever, and this will obviously bump me up from that. Now I know that sounds like a big leap. Especially since I only covered 30.59 miles in May. But Iย knowย I’m fit enough to do it, I’ve been running pretty consistently for almost 4 years now. I’ve just become complacent and lazy and haven’t actually pushed myself to really preform at my best for a while now. I need some external motivation to actually make me want to put in the effort to get more miles in, and I think this will be the perfect challenge to get me there!

img_3755

As for the rest of the summer, I’m hoping I’ll build up enough momentum with the TinMan challenge this month to get me through most of July. The first week July will be a little tricky though. That’s when our trip to Florida is and it sounds like Luke’s mom has a pretty full itinerary for us while we’re there. So I guess I’m just going to try to run as much as I can, whenever I can, and hopefully that will be enough to keep the momentum going until I start my half marathon training plan that starts on July 23rd. I suppose that basically covers my running plans for this summer. Here’s hoping I’ll actually be able to keep up with this challenge and that I’ll start half marathon training feeling fit, happy, and injury free!

So speaking of half marathon training, I still haven’t signed up for the race I want to run this year haha. I’m planning on doing that very soon though. Hopefully I’ll beat the price increase, but at this point I’m not sure exactly when I’ll have the money to register. I’m also still not sure if my sister wants to run it with me or not. I sure hope she decides to. I think we’d both have lots of fun! Although if she does decide to run it with me, I’d like to do a few training runs with her so we can get a feel of what it would be like to run with each other. We’ve seriously never been on a run together! Actually accomplishing that may be a little tricky though, since now she lives 8 hours away from me in Colorado. But I suppose we’ve still got a little bit of time to work all of that out (if she even decides to run the race with me that is), this half marathon isn’t until November after all. ๐Ÿ™‚

So I’ve gotta say, I really enjoy writing these “Thursday Things” posts. It gives me a chance to go on and on about pretty much anything and everything that I’ve been up to or that’s on my mind and I think that’s a lot of fun! But that means that sometimes these posts end up being kinda long and I’m not sure how you guys feel about that. I mean, I enjoy reading blog posts that are short, sweet, and to the point, but I think I like longer, more detailed posts even better! I guess I’m just nosy like that. ๐Ÿ™‚

But for now that’s really all I’ve got to talk about for today.

Wishing you all the very best for your running goals, everyday adventures, and any of your other goals and challenges in life!

Meat Loaf, Running, and Thunderstorms

WHY HAVE I HAD THIS SONG STUCK IN MY HEAD FOR THREE DAYS?!?!? Probably because I’ve been listening to it nonstop for three days now…Not entirely sure how the hell that happened. Looking up Iggy Pop on Youtube then clicking on related videos somehow brought me to Meat Loaf and ever since then I haven’t been able to stop. Whatever haha.

Anyway, I ran today! Yay! Apparently a few days off was just what I needed, because I felt pretty darn good today.:) I did three easy miles, that didn’t exactly feel easy because of wind gusts of up to 40 mph. That definitely made things interesting, but kinda fun actually. What was not fun was the fact that it was 62 degrees. I do not like the hot ๐Ÿ˜ฆ (and with that, the whining about warm weather has officially started). I guess this means I’m going to have to start waking up earlier, and I won’t be able to meander around my house for as long as I want to before I run anymore. I’m going to have to start getting out the door as early as possible, before the sun gets all the way up and heating up the pavement. Bleh. I’m really not looking forward to summer running.

I spent a good majority of this run holding my hat on my head. It’s been crazy windy today!

Speaking of the weather, it’s been pretty crazy here today! We’ve been under three different warnings through the day. We’ve been under a fire weather warning for a week or two now, We were under a wind advisory from 1-6 pm, and we’re currently under a tornado watch. That started at around 3 pm. So yeah, no one is suppose to burn anything in pretty much the whole state of Kansas, there’s been trash flying around my neighborhoodย today and every once in a while I’ll here something get knocked over by the wind, and the conditions outside are ideal for tornado weather right now. Fun times!

The whole tornado thing doesn’t really bother me though. I’ve lived in the Midwest my whole life, so tornado watches are just a very common occurrence in the spring and summer. I even lived through a tornado that touched down near my parents’ house in Illinois 5 or 6 years ago! Granted, it wasn’t a very big tornado, but it’s still cool to be able to say that. ๐Ÿ˜‰ And besides, I don’t even live in tornado ally. The crazy amount of wind and fire advisories are still kinda new to me though. Back in Illinois I lived on a flood plain and near enough to the Mississippi river that wildfires weren’t something we really had to worry about, but apparently here in Kansas it’s something we have to be mindful of.

So I know I tend to drone on and on about the weather, but this kind of stuff absolutely fascinates me! Especially severe weather. A lot of people think I’m crazy, but I absolutely love watching thunderstorms roll in. It’s literally my favorite pass time in the summer. I get super excited every time I see a thunderstorm in the weather forecast, and have spent a lot of time sitting on my front porch here in Kansas or my mom and dad’s back deck in Illinois just watching lightning. Maybe I should have been a storm chaser or something haha. I mean, sometimes I plan my runs around thunderstorms. I really like going out right before a storm front moves in and then try to get my run done before the storm actually hits. I usually end up getting rained on, which I don’t mind one bit, but that’s probably a dangerous game to play. But come on, life’s no fun without a little bit of danger. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So even though I’m not a fan of summer and I absolutely hate hot weather, at least I have something to look forward to during the summer months. I’m just hoping this year wont be as dry as last year was. That was no fun…

What’s your favorite kind of weather?

Running in the rain, yay or nay?ย

Are you excited for summer and the coming of warmer weather?

January 24th, 2017

Ugh, I’m getting really tired of the crazy fog that we’ve been having every morning. It’s making everything crazy muddy, so my floors are crazy muddy because my dogs have hairy feet and track in a lot of mud… It’s obnoxious. Plus the fog makes running/walking/being on the road in general makes things about 8 million times more dangerous. Especially since a lot people around here don’t seem to realize that when it’s foggy out (or rainy, or actually dark out) you need to turn on their headlights. Seriously guys, it’s not that difficult! And in the fog it makes you a lot easier to see, which is a just a little bit more safe. You’d think growing up near St. Louis I’d be used to really shitty drivers, but I swear people here in Kansas are worse…

Along with making road conditions unsafe, the fog makes breathing while running super uncomfortable. You’re seriously just breathing in a bunch of water and it’s absolutely no fun…

Ok, I’m done complaining now. I think. Haha I guess we’ll see by the time I finally get done rambling.

So have you ever had one of those moments when you’re just tired of what you currently look like and what to do something majorly different? Because I totally had that happen yesterday. At first I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do. I don’t have any money for a new tattoo, so that was out. I thought about another DIY piercing, but I have sensitive ears and didn’t feel like going through the healing process for that. I considered (and am still considering actually) dying my hair, but meh, I don’t know what I’d want to do…So I ended up cutting off a bunch of my hair.

Mostly because I really miss my short hair. It was so much easier to take care of, plus it didn’t end up being a hot, gross, sweaty mess in the summer. The only problem is, I really like the way I look with long hair. Plus aside from the one time I seriously had all of my hair chopped off in 2011 (at one point it was even shorter than in the photo below), it’s always been super long.

My hair in 2012 and my hair in 2015.

But like I said, I wanted a change, so I cut a bunch of it off yesterday. And when I say cut it off, I mean I actually cut it off. I’ve been cutting my hair myself for 2 years now and I don’t think I’m ever going to go back to a hairdresser. It’s just so much cheaper to do it myself, and it’s not like I do anything with my hair anyway. I straighten it every once in a while, and other than that it’s usually down or in a braid or ponytail. And I’ve been dyeing it myself since I was like 17, but that’s a whole other story. Plus if I hate how it turns out, I have no one to blame but myself. But i’m quite happy with how it turned out this time around! It’s not as short as it was back in 2012 but its at a nice medium length now. ๐Ÿ™‚

Look at that pile of hair! My head feels a lot lighter now. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ah, my shorter hair made running a much more pleasant experience! When my hair is long, I have one hell of a time deciding what to do with it during workouts. In the winter I can usually just leave it down, but I always end up with some really nasty knots. In the summer I tend to opt for braids. I don’t particularly like ponytails, since my hair was so long I had to do them really high and tight and that gave me headaches. Plus my hair was still long enough to bounce off of my nexk and ears and that was super annoying. So braids worked alright but the still could be annoying…

Today I just left my hair down and since it’s a lot shorter there were no knots! Yay!! And on a completely unrelated note, there are two things in life that I don’t have time for; matching my socks and matching my gloves. I just can’t be bothered to do it. Seriously, why take the extra few seconds/minutes to find a glove or socks partner? I don’t care if they match or not. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Anyway, my run was short, sweet, and fantastic! Only two easy miles, but it felt sooo good!! Haha well, the second mile wasn’t exactly easy, but I felt too good to not pick up the pace a bit. Especially on the section of road that was going down hill. When I’m feeling good I like to run hard on the uphills and then run the down hill with reckless abandon, which is exaclty what I did today. And that’s why the second mile wasn’t exactly easy, but boy was it lots of fun! Anyways,  finished in 24:17. Still slow, but it’s faster than I’ve been doing, so I’m happy with it. Plus the weather was awesome this morning. I waited for the fog to clear up, so the sun was out, it was nice and cold, and there was not much wind (which doesn’t exactly happen often here in the Sunflower State) . It was great. ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŒค๐Ÿ˜

The only thing that would have made this run better is if I could have been able to run part of it without shoes. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to go barefoot since the end of December. Anyone remember back in September when I had a toe incident that was suprisinly not running related? Well that toe has been kinda bugging me lately. It’s been red and swollen since it got hurt but it’s been a little worse lately. Luckily as long as I run or walk in shoes it’s not a problem, so at least there’s that. ๐Ÿ™‚ I just want to be able to run barefoot again. That’s a lot of fun.

A good run after a week of not so good runs really has a way of lifting my spirits and reminds me why I even bother with this crazy sport. Those bad times can really make a person question why they even bother. At least I do sometimes, but I guess bad days, weeks, and months are all part of the adventure.

Wishing you lots of happy miles!
