Weekly Recap: April 16th-22nd, 2018

I was still sick for a good portion of this week, but I definitely started to feel better and was pretty much recovered from this illness by the end of the week which was awesome! And bonus, I was able to do pretty much all of the running I wanted to accomplish. It was mostly slow and kinda boring stuff and some of it got cut a little shorter than I wanted, but hey, it was a vast improvement over last week and I will gladly take that! πŸ™‚

Monday:

  • 3 easy miles

Marathon Monday. Wow! Still can’t get over Des Linden’s win at the Boston Marathon! That was just incredible!

So since I spent the whole morning watching the Elite coverage of the Boston Marathon, I didn’t end up running until around 12:30 that afternoon. That wasn’t a big deal, but it felt kinda weird haha. I like to get my running done and out of the way first thing in the morning that way I don’t have to worry about it throughout the day. Anyway, just did an uneventful 3 miles on Monday. After that I had to take care of all of the things I neglected to do since I spent so much time watching TV haha.

Tuesday:

  • 5 miles

I was still feeling kinda bleh on Tuesday and had originally only planned to do 2-3 miles because I sill wasn’t feeling great. But it seemed like the more I ran the better I felt, so I ended up doing 5 haha. It wasn’t exactly fun and I spent a lot of time coughing and wiping my nose, but I’m glad I did it. πŸ™‚

Wednesday:Β

  • 3 miles with a couple strides thrown in for fun
  • 20 minutes of yoga/foam rolling

I was finally starting to feel better by Wednesday! Not at 100% but still, I was very happy with the improvement and it showed during my run! It was hard, but fun hard and not I’m still sick and feel like I’m dying, which I will gladly take! After my run I spent over 2 hours cleaning out our spare bedroom where the chickens had lived until Tuesday night when we finally moved them into the coop. That was an adventure in and of itself! Wednesday was a good day and you can read more about it here. πŸ˜‰

img_1123

Thursday:

  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 30 minutes of yoga

Cross training is a necessary evil as far as I’m concerned. I don’t particularly enjoy doing it, I usually find it to be boring, but I know it’s good for me. So I do it. Sometimes hahaha. But by Thursday I was feeling sooooo much better! Still probably not 100% better, I still had a cough, but for the most part I was feeling pretty good! πŸ™‚

Friday:

  • 2.5 miles

Friday was an interesting day. Started off with a run as usual. I warmed up with what was supposed to be a nice and easy mile, but my new favorite band finally released their new album the night before so obviously I had to listen to that while I ran. I new that was a bad idea but I did it anyway haha. New music makes me a happy camper. But it also makes me go out waaaay too fast during my warm up and then that tends to make the rest of the workout a huge suffer fest. Luckily it was a short on on Friday though haha. After my “warm up” I did some cadence drills (about a mile of ’em πŸ™‚ ) and then cooled down with a little more easy running. Like I said, it was kinda a huge suffer fest, but it was also pretty fun!

And just for some clarification; I’ve been joking about The Longshot being my new favorite band for a while now (if you know me then you know I’m the biggest Green Day fangirl in ALL THE LAND!). But the thing is, it’s literally just another side band that the front man for Green Day has come up with. So its pretty much just Green Day with a few different people. Haha I still thing it’s fucking great though and I absolutely love their album. Hence the going out too fast during my warm up on Friday. πŸ˜‰

Anyways, on Friday evening my brother-in-law, his girlfriend, and her two kids came over to our house to hang out. And so did one of my neighbor’s and her kid (the one who likes to come over and hang out with me). So for some reason all of the small children (they were 7, 4, and 3 years old) all flocked to me, fought for my attention, and over who got to sit in my lap. Small children terrify me. Haha so not sure why they all wanted to be my friend (well, except for my neighbor, like I said, she likes hanging out with me). So that went on for several hours and was exhausting. I passed out right away when I finally went to bed that night.

Saturday:

  • 5.58 miles

Saturday’s are usually my long run day. So the original plan was to do 8 miles. But between getting over an illness, going a little too hard during my workout on Friday, and then having 3 young children all over me the night before I was kinda worn out and just not feeling it. After about 2 miles I just started laughing at myself and was like “yeah, 8 miles definitely isn’t gonna happen today.” Then at about 3 miles I got chased to two little demon dogs that were running around unleashed in a non-fenced in front yard. Once the took off after me the followed my for a little bit, so I stopped and looked back to their house to see if their owner was out. She was, but she was just throwing her hands in the air, then covering her face, and I’m pretty sure she started crying… Like, I get that your dogs running off is a frustrating situation, but freaking out like that isn’t going to do anyone any good. Plus those little assholes were trying to bite at my ankles and I wasn’t about to try to catch them and bring them back to her. As far as I’m concerned that’s not my problem (and remember this is coming from the person who has caught and returned several dogs to their owners while out running). Ugh, I’ve grown to despise people who let their dogs run after people like that, then act like it’s the person who the dogs are chasing’s fault. Like, I’m on a public road. The law says that I can be here. And the law also says that your dogs can’t be out in public like that without a leash. Therefore, not my problem.

As someone who goes to great lengths to train her dogs not to do shit like that, and follow all the laws that pertain to dogs, I find it super frustrating when other people don’t. And then throw a fit whenever they let their dogs get into a potentially dangerous situation and are chasing/trying to bite a random passerby.

Anyway, I was in a standoff with those two dogs for several minutes, and had to resort to growling at them to keep them from coming close enough to bite me (usually a firm “no!” does the trick, but that didn’t work this time). Eventually some kid in a truck drove by and that distracted them long enough for me to get away. I’m not sure what happened to them after that, but again, not my problem.

After that it took me another 2 ish miles to loop back around to my house and once I got there I was just done. That was enough excitement for me that day. Oh well, aside from being chased by 2 little dogs (and can we just take a second to acknowledge that smaller dogs breeds are much more aggressive than most medium/large dog breeds?), I was happy with what I got done on Saturday. πŸ™‚

Sunday:

  • rest day

And a well earned one, I think!!

Total Weekly Mileage: 19.20

Between getting over an illness and all of the shenanigans that happened this week, I still got shit done!! All things considered, I got a decent amount of miles in and got a tiny bit of cross training and stretching done. All in all, I felt like I had a productive week. And my Garmin is telling me that I’ve been productive, so go me!! πŸ™‚

I hope you’ve had a good week and a fun weekend!

Until next time,

10 Miles In Struggleville

Look out half marathon number 3! I’m coming for you!! I feel like it’s gonna suck and I’m not going to be having much fun, but now I know I can do it!!

Processed with Rookie Cam

My long run this morning, it was pretty terrible. I’m not at all surprised by that though. This was the longest run I’ve done since August, so I kinda figured it was going to suck. Honestly most of my problem was probably mental. I didn’t sleep well last night and running 10 miles was literally the last thing I wanted to do. But I knew that if I didn’t get it done this morning that I probably never would, so I went out and did it. It sucked. It was slow. I had to fight for every single step that I took. But I did it and I’m probably better for it. Maybe I didn’t improve my fitness at all, but I think I made huge strides with my metal toughness today.

img_7282

After my run I decided I needed to continue torturing myself and take an ice bath haha. Ice baths are usually a pretty miserable experience, but my legs always end up feeling a lot better in the hours and days following a long run and ice bath, so I suck it up and I do it. Haha the only problem with that was that I didn’t have any ice!

The ice maker in my freezer has been broken for quite some time now and I keep forgetting to get a bag of ice whenever I’m out and about. So when I had about 2 miles left in my run I texted Luke and asked him if he could get me some, and some chocolate milk too. πŸ˜‰ He was at work, but I could have stopped by and picked it up once I was done. So he did get me what I asked for, but thanks to my awesome next door neighbor I didn’t have to go get it! She had gone there to talk to Luke to see if I could baby sit her daughter today, because she’s not feeling well and wants some time to just relax. So he told her I could (after he texted me and asked me first haha) and he sent my milk and ice with her, so by the time I got home it was sitting on my front porch. So yeah, my husband’s awesome, my neighbor’s awesome, and I was reminded that running really is a team sport. πŸ™‚ Haha and I’m also baby sititng a 3 year old by myself today, which is waaay out of my comfort zone (I just don’t feel like I’m good with small children), but she’s a good kid and enjoys hanging out here.

Anyways, my excitement of not having to go get my stuff was very short lived, because I mean, I had to go spend 20 minutes sitting in a tub full of ice cold water. Fun times…Haha luckily Winchester decided to keep my company during that little adventure. Honestly he seemed very confused about the fact that I was fully clothed in a bathtub full of freezing cold water. And thanks to my wonderful husband I had many options as to what I was drinking while I was in there; I had my hot coffee to make the experience a little less terrible, my favorite flavor of Gatorade that he had picked up for me the other day and that I’d been sipping on during my run, and the chocolate milk that I’d asked for. πŸ™‚

After my ice bath I ate a little snack and waited for about 30 minutes before I took a nice hot shower (I think I read somewhere that you’re supposed to wait a little bit after ice baths before you get into a hot shower, to let your core temperature get closer to normal by itself. I have no idea if that was long enough, but oh well. πŸ˜‰ ), then attempted to nap. After laying down for a few minutes I knew that wasn’t going to happen. It seems like no matter how tired I am after a long run I can never seem to nap. Does anyone else have this problem?

Anyway, it’s 1:26 pm as I type this, and my neighbor is supposed to be here around 2 or 3 ish, so I need to go pick up the house and do a little bit of stretching before she gets here.

Happy Saturday!

I Suck At Sleeping, Apparently

Alright, I probably don’tΒ actuallyΒ suck at sleeping, but the past couple of nights I just haven’t slept well and it kinda sucks. I’m thinking maybe I shouldn’t have just jumped right back into my training scheduled after skipping a long run and then taking a week off for an injury (ok, I know I shouldn’t have done it, but I’m stubborn), but what’s done is done and I’m pretty sure my body is pissed at me haha. Meh, I also think I’ll be fine in a few days. Garmin told me that it was going to take me 4 days to recover from my long run last Sunday and I’m beginning to think that wasn’t an over exaggeration.

So, I literally did nothing but sit on my couch yesterday. I got a lot of reading done though (I’ve got about 8 thousand books that I need to read but just haven’t gotten around to yet), so go me!! Aaand after waking up tired again this morning and looking at my sleep chart, I’ve decided that another day off from running is probably a good idea. So, after I’m done with this post I’m probably going to go do some yoga and stretching and foam rolling. Thanks to the ice bath I took on Sunday after my 9 miler, my legs actually feel really good! But it’s probably still a good idea to give them some more TLC. πŸ™‚

Also, just a quick shout out to the person on Instagram who commented about how much worse their night of sleep was. Gosh I hate “one uppers”. That is literally one of my biggest pet peeves. Like, just because you had it worse doesn’t mean someone else isn’t entitled to complain about something going on with them. That shit drives me crazy. And so does unsolicited advise, which is also something I got on Instagram today, when someone else told me that my sleep chart actually looks normal. Like, no dude, that’s totally not normal for me and since you don’t know me there’s a good chance that you wouldn’t know that, and therefore you’re “helpful” comment just irritated me. I know I probably shouldn’t get so worked up over stuff like that, but it’s just sooo annoying. I very much believe that unless someone is explicitly asking for your advice, you shouldn’t just go around handing it out, because in most situations there is probably a good chance that you don’t know 100% what’s going on with the other person. And one uppers are just super obnoxious…

(Haha I was so annoyed that I posted a very unsuccessful rant on vidme. Finn makes a guest apperance. It’s great. πŸ˜‰ ).

Oh and I’m pretty sure the meter man opened the gate to my backyard because the dogs were barking at him while he was in the easement. I made them come in once they started doing it, but once he made his way across the street to one of the neighbor’s yards, I let them back out (what can I say, they like being outside). Well seconds later I see Finn, Dean, and Ace running across my front yard, so I called them back inside (luckily they’re all trained well and come the second they’re called). So I checked the gate and it was wide open and pushed inwards. 1. The dogs have never opened that gate before. 2. Even if they did I feel like it should have been pushed outward and probably not opened all the way. And 3. I know for a fact it was shut before hand, because the dogs had been in the yard all morning. So I’m pretty sure he opened it…Jokes on him though, because they went running after him when I let them back out haha. Luckily though I noticed them before anything bad could happen.

Anyways, aside from my not-so-great night of sleep and annoying people, I’m actually in a pretty good mood today! It’s beautiful out, the temperature is starting to go down a little bit, and you can just barely feel little hints of fall in the air. It’s great!! I’ve been telling Luke that I think it’s going to be a short summer and so far it’s definitely looking that way! Later this week the and over the weekend the highs are supposed to go back up into the mid/high 80’s but then after that it drops to the mid/low 70’s. Haha I sure hope that happens, and then that trend continues and that fall gets here fast! I’m so over summer and am very ready for fall running!!

img_6068

Plus my knee (the reason I had to take a week off) is feeling much better! I was worried about how it was going to hold up during my long run on Sunday, but it did very well! There was a little bit of pain in the beginning but around mile 4 it started feeling much better and by the time I had finished it actually didn’t hurt at all! Yay! Now hopefully it will just stay fine because I’m not entirely sure what I did to hurt it in the first place haha.

But anyways, that is all I’ve got for today so I’m off to do some yoga! Happy Tuesday!

10 Miles and Thursday Things

Decided to switch things up a little bit, and do my long run today instead of doing it during the weekend like I usually do.

I don’t know what it is about long run day, but every morning that I plan on running long, I can never seem to eat very much. I could eat anything and everything before a shorter run or even speed work, but my stomach never wants to cooperate when it knows we’re running long…This morning I managed to force down a container of yogurt with a tbs on chia seeds mixed in (great combo, by the way!) and a cup of coffee, which is actually more than I usually eat.

Anyway, about 40 minutes after I ate; around 8:20 am, I made my way out the door and set out to run 10 miles. What I didn’t take into account was the weather. I definitely should have gotten up and out the door much earlier. It was almost 60 degrees and sunny when I set out, and about 65 when I finished. That was absolutely no fun. I already dislike warm weather, and the transition from cold weather running to warm weather running is always super tough for me.

img_2139

I’m not exactly a fan of sunny weather.

I got it done though! Parts of it were slightly miserable. It ended up taking me about 2 hours and 22  minutes to do it, and at one point I ended up sitting on my porch for a few minutes while eating a banana and feeling sorry for myself. But I still covered 10 miles on my own two feet. πŸ™‚ This is actually the longest run I’ve done since the Longview Half back in November. I’ve set out to do 10 milers a few times since then, but the longest I’ve managed was 8, until today. I think because I fueled pretty well today.

Processed with Rookie Cam

All of the trees in my neighborhood are starting to bloom! πŸ™‚

The yogurt and coffee I had for breakfast actually sat really well in my stomach. I was a little worried about that, since dairy and warm weather don’t tend to mix well for me, so that was a pleasant surprise! I stopped at my house around every two miles for a quick drink of water. That’s the nice part about running long around my neighborhood, I don’t have to carry water or food with me which is really nice. It almost makes up for the fact that it can get boring running up and down the same streets over and over again. Anyway, around mile 4 I ate half a pack of Honey Stinger energy chews, finished the pack at around 6.5 miles, then had my little pity party and banana at around mile 8. That seemed to work really well for me! I kinda wish I had a gatorade though. I sweat super salty so I always feel 8 million times better when I drink sports drinks while on the run. Oh well, I’ll just have to remember to stock up on some next time I go to the store.

img_2125

Anyway, after my run I sat with my legs up on the wall for 5 minutes, showered, ate lunch, and then a whole lot of nothing for a while. I’m feeling kinda drained from those 10 miles. Surprisingly enough though, my legs actually feel pretty darn good! My butt and hamstrings are kinda sore from running up hills, but for once my quads aren’t sore at all! They don’t even feel tight, which is pretty much a miracle n and of itself, because my quads are always tight. It’s really nice though! My legs have never felt so good after a long run before!

While I was eating lunch a thunderstorm kinda popped up out of nowhere. I had checked the weather several times throughout the day, and we weren’t supposed to get any rain at all. Luckily I saw a flash of lighting before it actually hit, so I had enough time to run outside and brought the rabbits before it started pouring. At first I was kinda wishing that this little storm would have popped up earlier while I was running. I very much enjoy running in the rain. But then it started hailing. Luckily the hail stopped after a few minutes, but that definitely wouldn’t have been pleasant to run in! So I guess I’m glad I ran when I did.

Around 3 pm I finally got my shit together and decided it would be a good idea to move around and stretch a little bit. So I ate a bowl of honey bunches of oats, did 30 minutes of yin yoga (I’ve been really enjoying yin yoga, but I couldn’t make it through the whole video I was doing today), picked up my running gear which was still scattered around the house, then started making dinner; pasta with veggies (zucchini for me, broccoli for  Luke), chicken, and garlic/tomato/basil s sauce. Yum!

Once Luke got home we ate, and then I abandoned any pretenses of actually getting anything else done today haha. He’s playing video games, I’m reading a book, and that’s probably what we’ll be doing for the rest of the night.

Happy Thursday!

Long Run, Shoe Retirement, A Dog Park Adventure, and Other Saturday Stuff

As of right now I’m falling a tad bit behind on my goal of running 1,000 miles this year. Which isn’t all that bad, since it is still so early in the year and I’ve got plenty of time to make up for it. just don’t want to make it a habit.

I skipped my run yesterday because my mom and brother were here and I didn’t want to just leave them alone at my house, since we don’t exactly get to see each other often. And today I cut my run a tad bit short.

It wasn’t too bad really, my goal was 8 miles, but I felt really good and I was actually considering doing 9 or 10! But I during my run I had stopped at home to get a quick drink of water. While I was there Luke told me he wanted to go to the dog park. So I ended up running another mile ish after we had talked, which brought me right back to my house. Haha that’s why I called it quites at 7.46 miles. Once I was done with my run I quickly changed, then we went to the dog park. Totally worth it!

Seriously though, I felt really good on today’s run! Which was a bit of a surprise because I’ve basically been dreading this run since last night haha. I did have a lot of fun though! Initially there were some icy spots on the ground, so the first few miles were slow and cautious, but eventually the ice started melting and I was able to throw a few pick ups at the end. πŸ˜„

Because of the ice I ended up spending quite a bit of time staring down at my shoes, as I really had to watch where I was going.  Around mile 4 I decided this was the last run my Lunar Glides were going on. You could tell just my looking at them that they’re pretty much done up. They are kinda leaning inward which is no good. I’ve also started wearing out a spot on the soles of both shoes, right at the ball of my feet. Haha I tend to do that to shoes and socks. But anyway, I’ve had my Lunar Glides for probably a year an a half, I think? I ran a half marathon in them and they’ve got somewhere around 500 miles on them, so they’ve had a good running life, but they are officially being demoted to everyday walking around shoes.

I mean, they still look pretty good! But they’re probably no good to run in anymore.

Anyway, the dog park was a much more pleasant experience without my moms dog. This time Lily actually got to go, which was nice. Plus my dogs listen better and I don’t have to worry about either of them hurting another dog. I mean, my mom’s dog never has, but he’s just so big, temperamental, and he doesn’t listen well. But today it was just me, Luke, and our dogs, so I didn’t have to worry about that. Plus the dogs had a lot of fun and burned off some energy, so that’s good.

Haha so, the gate to get into the park was actually locked today. I guess since we’re supposed to be getting hit with some really bad weather tonight they didn’t want anyone there. That didn’t stop anyone though. There were about 20 cars parked in front of the gate. I guess everyone wanted to get their dogs walk, runs done, and bike rides out of the way before the bad weather hits. I just thought it was funny that so many other people were so dedicated to getting their stuff done, that a locked gate wasn’t about to stop them!

When we got home from the dog park, I ate a huge bowl of mac and cheese and a slice of peach pie, because I was STARVING haha. And who can pass up home made mac and cheese and pie? πŸ˜‰

After I ate I showered and then Luke and I started a video game marathon. He’s playing his PS4, I’m playing my 3DS, and that’s pretty much all we’ve done and all we plan on doing haha.

I hope you’ve had a wonderful Saturday!!

~Ashley

Ten. Freaking. Miles.Β

This morning I did the first 10 miler of my half marathon training plan. It’s not the first time I’ve done a 10 mile training run, but it was the longest run I’ve done since I ran my first half last year. So I feel like it’s still a big deal.

Luke was kind enough to take me to the trail this morning. Although, it did take some convincing to get out of bed this morning at 8. Haha that’s what he gets for staying up so late on the weekends haha!

Today’s run was nothing fancy. 5 miles out and then 5 miles back. Easy peasy, right? Well at least that’s what I’m telling myself! The first 6 miles went well, around mile 7 I was ready for a nap, at mile 8 I was ready to swear off running for good, and by mile 9 I wanted to die. But hey, I got got through it, and now next weeks long run should be a little easier (hopefully).

So I got this 10 miles done at the exact same pace that I did the Longview half last year, so I’m pretty confident that this year I’ll be able to do it a little faster. At least I sure hope so!

Anyway, I finally got around to trying Honey Stinger energy chews. I really liked them! They were yummy, easy to eat, and they didn’t upset my stomach. I had some trouble opening the package, but that may have been because I was so sweaty haha. Even though I did like these, I still prefer the waffles! I think those are more tasty. πŸ˜‰

When my run was done, I got some much needed mac and cheese from Panera. Hahaha trust me when I say that was very much necessary! As was my super long shower once we got home. I was disgusting.

So once all that excitement was done, Luke cooked a whole bunch of stuff! He made two jars of apple pie filling, he’s not sure how those are going to turn out but it seems fine to me. He also made chicken and dumplings and pumpkin bread. And while he was doing all that, I sat on the couch, attempted and failed at taking a nap, and sat some more. I’m so helpful haha.

I suppose I should stretch and foam roll. I’ll get right on that once the pumpkin bread is done! πŸŽƒπŸ˜

Happy first day of October!!

~Ashley

It’s officially getting too hot for me…

It was 60 degrees during my run this morning and it suuuuucked! I was kinda due for a bad run though, I mean, they can’t all be good.

I just did my typical 5 mile long run. It took me about 6 minutes longer than my 5 milers have been taking me, but the heat coupled with my lack of sleep the past 2 nights, it’s not all that suprising that it took me longer. Especially since I had to take a few walking breaks.

Haha I’m already complaining about heat and it’s not even that bad yet. Summer is gonna suck…

Anyway, I had sport beans to fuel with on today’s run! Unfortunately my stomach wasn’t all to happy with them, which was a first. Usually they work really well for me. Hopefully that was just a one time thing.

Watermelon is my favorite flavor! 😁

I’m also starting to carry water with me. I have a handheld bottle but I’m not exactly a fan of it. I like having my hands free. I guess that means I’m gonna have to break out my hydration pack! The hydration pack makes my back sweat like crazy, but man is it convinent!

Haha I feel like this post is super weird and random. Sorry about that, I’ve kinda been all over the place today, but I’m done rambling now. πŸ˜‰

I can’t even begin to describe how much I love this album!
