Congrats on yet another collective trip around the sun! The ride might feel long, it might also seem like it’s flying by at times, but at least we get to share the experience with some awesome (and maybe some not so awesome) people. At the very least it’s an interesting ride!
Seriously though, does anyone else feel like this year gone by really fast while simultaneously dragging on an on and on?!? Hahaha I don’t know, I guess it’s just been a weird year. Weird, but also good. 😁
So I just wanted to look back month-by-month at all (or at least most 😉) of my personal highlights from 2018. Last year I actual broke this idea up into two different posts, one for running and one for life in general. But for this year I’m just gonna stick with one post. I did have a lot of fun running-wise in 2018, but at the same time nothing really spectacular happened for me. I only accomplished one PR and that was for the longest run I’ve ever done. No shiny new time PR’s for me… So that’s kind of a bummer, but hey, now I’ve got a whole new year ahead of me to start working towards some other shiny new PR’s!!
Anyway, let’s get to it! Here are my month-by-month, personal highlights from 2018! 🥳
Alrighty! 2018 kicked off with me putting one of my Christmas gifts from 2017 to good use!! My sisters bought me Run Fast Eat Slow by Shalane Flanagan and Elyse Kopecky. What an amazing gift and an awesome cookbook! I must admit, while I do believe in eating clean, whole, nutritious foods, I can find some of it a little boring… But cooking with this cookbook taught me that healthy, nutritious food doesn’t have to be boring.

Around the end of December or early January, Kay Von D and Billie Joe Armstrong collaborated on a new eyeliner. Not gonna lie, I know nothing about makeup and have been doing my eyeliner in basically the same way since I was 16. But when an amazing artist and the guy who pretty much made guyliner (who also happens to be one of your own personal heroes) makes an eyeliner you buy it! And buy it I did! Hahaha and I’ve still got quite a bit of it left since I don’t often wear makeup.
I think this photo came from Kat Von D’s instagram? Honestly I don’t remember, it’s been saved on my phone for a while haha.
Oh and I started dyeing my blonde streak purple in January. I’m not sure why I had never done that before, but I had always wanted to. So that was pretty cool.
PS, guess what eyeliner I’m wearing in this photo. 😉😉😉
I’m not sure if this really counts as a highlight, but looking back on it it makes me laugh really hard (I also kinda forgot that this happened this year 😂). But I’m February I slipped in my living room (on nothing I might add), fell, and slammed my toe into the leg of our couch. I never did get it looked at by a doctor but I’m pretty sure I broke it. It’s fully healed now though, so that’s good.
In a weird twist of fate, my toe breaking escapade happened right before I got two root canals done. So I had some pretty sweet pain meds for both of those situations. 😂 Seriously though, my teeth are REALLY bad and I began my journey to a healthier mouth in February. But I also ran out of insurance money, so it began and ended with those two root canals. But now that the new year is upon us I have insurance money again and can FINALLY get some more much needed work done on my teeth.
And last but certainly not least for February, I ended up going to Colorado with my dad and spending about a week there with him and my brother. I’m not gonna get into all of the details of our adventures while I was there, because I already have. 😉 But we had a lot of fun together. Hahaha even on the 16 hour drive from Kansas to Colorado! Hahaha that drive is only supposed to take 11 hours, but my dad and I like to stop and do stuff!! Oh and I think my brother and I accidentally ended up in Nebraska in our way to Kansas. Oh man, those were some good times. 😂
While I was in Colorado at the end of February Luke ended up buying a chicken coop and when I got back home we bought our first set of chicks of the year! Oh man I forgot how cute they were!! Unfortunately this was the set of chickens that my neighbor’s dog ended up killing because he kept getting into our yard. Luckily that finally got resolved, but I still wasn’t happy about losing all of our chickens…

Another adventure that was planned while I was in Colorado was running the Martin City Whiskey 5k with my dad! This was the first race we did together and it was so much fun!! Hahaha even though my dad ended up getting a little hurt at the end. But he eventually healed and I remember mentioning to him that now he needs to do a half marathon! I’m not sure how serious either of us were at that point though. But I was pretty stoked about my shot of Whiskey and super awesome post race breakfast and that was making me really look forward to some half marathoning!
Easter fell on April fools day this year, so on the first day of April Luke and were in Illinois celebrating Easter with our families. My grandma made a whole big lunch and lots of homemade desserts which is always fantastic! While we were there Luke, my brother who was also in Illinois for Easter, and I did some target shooting at our old house. We had to trespass a little bit on what used to be my grandma’s farm, but whatever. 😉 I though I might be a little bit rusty because I don’t really get to shoot anymore, but I did alright. 🙂 While we were there we ended up taking my brother and two of Luke’s brothers to the Saint Louis City Museum. We all had lots of fun there!
Later in the month Luke traded in our old Chevy Equinox and got a 2016 Dodge Ram. I feel like that was probably one of the best decisions that was made all year! Hahaha we’ve sure put the truck to good use since we’ve had it!!
On the second Saturday of May I did the Running With The Cows 5k for the second time! Eventually I need to do the half at this event, but I’m so glad I didn’t this year! It was super hot and muggy that day. Still a lot of fun though! I got to pet a baby cow, run a very pretty 5k on a super rural road that runs through a bunch of cow pastures, and then pick out food at the HUGE buffet they have for all of the runners. Seriously, they have some pretty awesome stuff there! I’ve been very happy both times I’ve left this race. If you’re ever looking to do a half or 5k in early May and happen to be in Kansas I definitely recommend checking this one out!
May was when we got our garden planted, built the chickens a bigger run, and just did a bunch of work outdoors. It’s not exactly glamours, but I sure do enjoy it. 😁
For Memorial Day Luke and I threw a bit of a party for some family and neighbors. The guys had a bit of a rib cook off, and I baked a couple of pies and made a bunch of sides. The neighbor kid that I babysit came over to play with my brother-in-law’s girlfriend’s kids, and we had 5 dogs running around because my brother-in-law brought his with him. Oh and us and the neighbors were just constantly climbing over the fence into each other’s yards for various reasons. Haha it was a little bit chaotic, but lots of fun!
On June first we got our second batch of chicks. Not exactly a highlight because we only had to get them because our neighbor’s dog killed the first set. But still kind of a highlight because LOOK HOW CUTE!!!!
Later in June we ended up in Illinois again. We did a bit more target practice at my parents old house while we were there, but the real high point of this particular trip was taking Luke’s youngest brother to Troy Park and playing on the playground and Pokémon Go-ing. Oh and we also picked up my sister’s old treadmill from her boyfriend’s mom’s house that night. Hahaha she literally gave me her treadmill because we have a truck and could actually haul it back home. Told you we’ve been putting that thing to good use!
Ok, just a little side note. Through the spring I’d been talking to my dad about doing a half marathon with me. I had been looking into the Gobbler Grind and told my dad that I was only going to do it if he’d do it with me because this race was the day after the Longview half which I was already registered for. So at some point he signed us both up and thus Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days was born!
July is Luke’s birthday month! Yay!! So on his birthday his brother, his girlfriend, her kids, and our next door neighbor kid all came over for Luke’s birthday and we threw him a little party. There was a cake and confetti and glow sticks and lots of dogs! What more do you need for a birthday party?!? 😂
For the past several years Luke’s mom has planned/organized a big family vacation for a bunch of people on that whole side of the family. This year that included 25 people!! Hahaha it was easy for so many people to come this year because we went to Branson. MO and since most of us live in the Midwest that’s not too crazy out of the way. I think EVERYONE drove there. 🙂 Anyway, we stayed in these cabins right next to a river so we spent a lot of our time there having a little too much fun out in the water. We did a lot of fishing, swimming, and those of us who were of age did a little a lot of drinking haha. 😉 It was an absolute blast though. I think hanging out on the river was the most fun part, but we did do a few other things. We went to a slightly depressing animal “safari” thing. We also had a big birthday party for several people at the equivalent of a Chucky Cheese, and we went to the outlet stores several times.

On one of the days we were there (I think it was the second to last) we had a big cookout thing. Everyone cooked a bunch of food, but in the middle of it all a HUGE thunderstorm rolled in. So everyone rushed around to get their food done and into the different cabins, get all of the small children inside, and everything picked up and what not. Then, like the good Midwesterners that we are, we sat out on the cabin porches and watched it come! At one point somebody dared someone to stand out in the rain for the entire storm and eventually all of the “kids” (Me, Luke, his brother’s and sister. His step sisters, our nephew, and a couple of their friends) ended up standing in the pouring rain. It was hilarious! Although the next day we found out that was when the Ride The Duck thing got caught in the storm and a bunch of people die. It wasn’t so funny after we found that out.
Aaaaaaaand training for Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days started near the end of July! If you’ve been following me for any amount of time you probably know that I do not do well in the heat and that I’m not a fan of summer running. But starting a new training plan for a big goal is always exciting!
This sunrise on August 4th reminded me that even though summer running is rough and that I absolutely hate waking up at 5 am, views like this make it totally worth it.
I guess August was a relatively uneventful month, as I have very few photos from then. 😂 But we did go to a casino for like the second time. Not exactly my thing, but it was still a good time.
So, every year since we’ve been married, Luke takes me to a pumpkin farm to pick pumpkins, apples, and to get other fun fall things. We ended up going super early this year (on September 14th to be exact 😉) because this summer was hot, dry, and brutal and I was very much over it. So the day the pumpkin farm opened its pumpkin patch we went and started all of our fun fall festivities early! 🎃😊
Later into September Luke’s mom added to my fall fun by sending me a big care package full of sweet Halloween stuff! She’s very much into Halloween as well, so she gets it. 😉 I started putting some of it up that day! Luke wouldn’t let me start decorating outside until October though. 😂
Yay October!! The brutal summer finally ended and it actually cooled down this year! It’s been FOREVER since we’ve actually had a chilly fall. That made me super duper happy!! So did all of the amazing fall foliage we had in the area this year! It’s been a long while since the trees have looked this pretty!
On October 5th we added a new member to our family!! On his way home from work that day Luke told me to be ready to leave when he got home because we were going on an adventure! That adventure turned out to be picking out a new puppy to be Finn’s future girlfriend! I made the right choice picking her out of the litter. Finn immediately fell in love with her.

The very next day I PR’d my longest distance run by doing a 14 mile long run! Haha I had to stop at home several times so I could let the new puppy out of her crate to pee and that did get a little bit annoying. But all in all this was a great run! I watched my watch while I hit and then went over the half marathon mark, because that was the first time I’ve ever done that in training and it was just so super cool!
On October 11th we went to Illinois yet again. This time for my mom’s birthday, one of Luke’s brother’s birthday, and his grandma’s and great aunt’s birthdays (they’re twins!!). Hahaha so we were kinda busy that time around! We only brought Whiskey with us for this trip just so she could get used to riding in the car, being by herself, and whatnot. But we ended up taking Luke’s youngest brother to Troy park again, this time with Whiskey, and apparently we went on the perfect day because there was some kinda of pet event going on! So there were all sorts of venders, rescues, and just people out there with a bunch of dogs! So Whiskey (and Luke’s brother, actually 😂) got lots of positive socialization. We even met another red border collie while we were there! That was so cool!! Hahaha the other girl and I saw each others dogs, make eye contact and then booked it to each other so we could talked. 😂 Oh man that was a great day!!
Oh and watching my grandma meet Whiskey for the first time was really cute too!! She used to breed German Shepherds, ran a dog boarding kennel, and was always super involved in the dog works (that’s where I get it all from!) so she LOVES meeting puppies. But I mean, who doesn’t?!
November got off to a really great start, with Whiskey and I watching the NYC marathon! Haha Luke signed up for another free trial of Hulu TV just so I could watch it (he did that for me in April so I could watch Boston as well ;). If you watched you know how amazing it was! If you didn’t, well, you really missed out!
November also brought the conclusion of Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days, and oh boy it didn’t end in any kind of way that I thought it would. I DNF’d the first half! ☹️ So that was really more of a low point of 2018. But the very next day I ran the Gobbler Grid half with my dad! It was the slowest half I’ve ever done, but it was also the most fun! Hahaha I’m so glad we ran that 5k together in the spring! If we hadn’t then this half might not have happened! Honestly I think this half marathon and the couple of days that I got to spend with my dad because of it was my favorite thing to happen this year.
Processed with Rookie Cam
The November fun didn’t end with that half marathon though! I ended up running a 5k on Thanksgiving morning! That was technically my first ever turkey trot and it was a blast!!! Plus they handed out pumpkin pies to all of the finishers instead of medals. That was awesome!! 🦃🏃🏻♀️🥧
And even after that there was still some more November running fun to be had! Haha we had a legit blizzard on November and guess who decided to run in it? That’s right, this girl!! Oh my gosh that was so ridiculous dangerous because we were experiencing high winds and white out conditions, but it was oh so much fun!!
Oh boy! November sure was busy, but believe it or not, December was even more hectic! We did lots and lots of fun Christmas stuff though!
On the 15th Luke took me (and Dean 😉) to two different Christmas light displays! First we went to one that was more of a light show that synced up to music. Those are always cool.
We didn’t stay there long though. Our next destination was a park that covers almost every tree around this lake in lights! It’s so beautiful! So we walked around there for a while and took a bunch of pictures! Haha Luke’s not big on the cold, Christmas, or picture taking, so I really appriciated doing all of that all at once. That being said, we had a really good night. 🙂
The next day Luke and I ended up exchanging Christmas gifts because we’re both terrible at waiting to give gifts. 😂 Apparently we both had similar ideas this year, because he got me a “fuck” coffee mug and I got him a monogrammed glass for adult beverages. 😉 Hahaha we know each other well.
On the 22nd we got our first eggs!!!!! You guys have no idea how excited I was! I’ve been waiting for this for such a long time!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 Ever since then we’ve been getting at least 2, sometimes 3 eggs a day from our hens. By this spring/summer we should be getting around 5-7 eggs a day! How freaking sweet is that?!?

We spent pretty much the rest of our December running around and getting stuff ready for Christmas. At 3 am on Christmas Eve we left Kansas and drove to Illinois so we could spend Christmas with some family. On Christmas Eve we started out at Luke’s dad’s, then we went to his grandma’s for a little bit. Then my grandma had a little party at her house of Christmas Eve, so we hung out there with her, my mom, and my uncle for a while.
Christmas Day was just as busy! Luke and I stayed at his dad’s house Christmas Eve night so we could open presents from them and Santa. After we did that Luke’s dad made us a late breakfast and we hung out there until noon when we went to Luke’s other grandma’s Christmas party. That’s always a big even! That side of the family takes Christmas VERY seriously and this year was no different. We had lots of food, presents, and fun. 🙂 That night me, Luke, and one of his brother’s stayed up playing this game on the Playstation. It got out of hand very quickly but it was a lot of fun haha.
It was a busy Christmas, but a good one.

At some point during our stay in Illinois Luke’s dad convinced him to come back for New Year’s Eve, because he was actually going to be off from work for that. So we drove back to Illinois last night at we’re at Luke’s dad’s right now. So we’ll be ringing in the New Year with Luke’s dad, step mom, and 2 of his brothers!
Oh man this post ended up being really long! Maybe I should have broken it up into two different posts. 😉 Oh well.
Thanks to everyone who hung in there with me and actually read everything hahaha. Honestly though I think I want to start writing a recap like this at the end of every year! Looking back at all of the adventures I’ve had this year was fun and it reminded me that I have done a lot of cool stuff in my life. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that on days that feel never ending or mind numbingly boring. But life is full of ups and downs and the not-so-great times make the good times that much better! I hope you’ve had a wonderful year full of fun, laughter, adventures, and many happy, healthy miles!
Wishing you a wonderful New Years Eve and a very happy New Year! Stay safe and have fun out there! Here’s to making 2019 a FANTASTIC year!
Your happy, nostalgic, slightly sappy, blogger friend,
I got really spoiled by the really nice weather we had last weekend and earlier this week. But all good things must come to an end and the cooler, rainy weather did yesterday. Bummer. But we’re getting really close to the end of August and the first day of fall is about a month away, so hopefully the summer weather wont be around for much longer!!
Anyway, now that it’s all hot and gross out again, I really regret not running on Thursday haha. I took a rest day because I was tired, but oh man I should have just sucked it up and gone for a run anyway. It rained almost all day and it wasn’t crazy hot out. I did take a nice long walk with Dean though. That was nice. We like the rain. 🙂
So since we are getting closer and closer to fall, I’ve been keeping and eye on the weather like a crazy person, just hoping and praying that we’ll start getting little hints of fall soon and that summer doesn’t hang around for too long haha. Since I’ve been doing that I knew that this weekend was supposed to be really hot and humid again. So on Thursday night I made kind of a last minute decision to do my long run on Friday, instead of on Saturday like I usually do. So at like, 9:45 that night (which is only 15 minutes before we go to bed haha) I started rushing around and getting stuff ready to go for the next morning. I like to have my coffee maker prepped, have an idea what I’m going to eat for breakfast, and my gear all in one place, the night before my long runs. Any other run I don’t make this much of an effort to prep for, but I like to be ready for when I run long haha.
The plan for this week’s long run was 10 miles but that didn’t happen. I got pretty close though. While the weather on Friday was still better than it was today, it was crazy humid, hazy, and hot out. And I made the really bad mistake of not drinking enough water before or during my long run, I didn’t fuel during my run, and I had no form of electrolyte replacement. Those are all things I need to function during summer long runs, so by mile 6 I felt like I was dying.
Luckily mile 6 happened when I was about a mile away from home, so I got to close to 7 by the time I made it back and once I did I grabbed some cash and ran to Casey’s (it’s less than a block away from my house), bought a couple of Body Armor’s (it’s my new favorite sports drink! So much tastier than Gatorade), ran back home, and proceeded to chug one whole bottle of my sports drink. Oh man, looking back now, it’s a really good thing I went back home when I did. I don’t think it would have ended up well for me if I didn’t. Anyway, I really didn’t want to go back outside after that, so I hopped on my treadmill and did a little over a mile. Just enough to hit 8 miles for the day, and then I called it quits. There’s not doubt in my mind that I would have been able to finish out 10 miles if I would have hydrated and fueled better, but hey, we all make mistakes. And 8 miles in the heat and humidity almost counts for 10 anyway. 😉 😉 😉
You can literally see how hazy it was in this photo. It’s not edited or filtered or anything. Gross…
While I didn’t quite accomplish my goal yesterday, I’m still glad I decided to switch my long run and hill workout. It was even hotter out today, without a single cloud in the sky, and of course we had another heat advisory. But earlier this week I had already decided that I was going to do this week’s hill workout on my treadmill. It’s actually super convenient because I don’t have any hills nearby that take me 6 or 8 or however many minutes my training plan calls for me to run up, so the treadmill kinda solves that problem! The only downside to doing a hill workout on the treadmill is that there is no downhill haha. I like the reward of being able to coast downhill after a hard climb up, but on a treadmill the most you get is totally flat. Which still isn’t bad, I just think running downhill is fun.
Anyway, I’m not sure if I killed this workout or if this workout killed me. Every inch of my body was dripping with sweat by the time I was done. It was pretty darn hard, especially after my run yesterday, but I still feel like I crushed it!
Afterwards while I was laying on the floor with my legs up on the wall my doorbell rang and I answered looking like this…
Sweaty, smelly, and wearing clothes that did not match at all because I threw on the nearest shirt I could find before I opened the door. Haha it ended up being one of the election candidates for the Kansas House of Representatives. I guess she was going door to door to talk to people today and while she gave me her whole spiel she kept looking at me like I was a crazy person. It was pretty freaking hilarious. 😂😂
Honestly when I went to answer the door I figured it might be one of my neighbors. One of them currently has his truck parked in our driveway because he’s re-doing his, so I thought he might want to ask if his cousin who’s there helping if he could park his truck in our driveway too, or something like that. He know’s I’m a runner and is very used to seeing me run around the neighborhood and being a sweaty mess so I didn’t really thing anything of it but nope, it was someone out campaigning. Haha I thought it was really funny though. I don’t think she expected someone that gross to open the door.
Oh man, sometimes it’s just little things like that that make life great. 🙂
Anyway, earlier this week the wonderful people at Rollga sent me one of their Rollga foam rollers and their Activator thing, and those got here on Thursday. 🙂 🙂 🙂
I did a little bit of rolling with them that day, but I’m thinking I’m going to get super duper acquainted with them tonight! I could really use it!! Plus not gonna lie, even though I’ve only used it once at this point, I think this might be the best foam roller I’ve ever used! I really like the way the groves in in kinda cradle your muscles. It’s fantastic. I haven’t exactly figured out the Activator yet, but I’m gonna work on it!! It looks like it might end up being pretty darn useful.
(Friendly reminder that I’m not trying to brag or anything, but I did get these recovery tools for free. I’m not getting paid or anything and wasn’t obligated in anyway to talk about or promote them though, so I really do mean what I say. Just trying to be 100% transparent and real here. 🙂 )
It wasn’t all that long of a run, only 8 miles. But that’s what I kept telling myself last night and this morning and I’m pretty sure that’s how I ended up getting through it ahahaha. “It’s only 8 miles. It’s only 8 miles. It’s only 8 miles.” After saying it enough times it really did feel like “only” 8 miles. 😉
Which is great! Because yesterday Luke and I helped some of our friends move. We actually only took one truckload of stuff from their old house to their new house and after we unloaded that into their new garage, got a tour of the house, and then sat out on their deck and drank some beer for a little bit, we went out for dinner. I don’t remember what the place was called (I think it was named after a famous chef or something? I’m not sure…) but it was pretty good! I got their mac and cheese (because carb loading. Duh! 😉 😉 😉 ) and it was pretty awesome! It had ham, bacon, and green onions in it. Yum! Everyone else got another drink but not me. I didn’t want to risk feeling too bad the next day haha. And of course Luke had to make fun of me because apparently you can’t have fun at a dinner with friends unless you’re drinking alcohol? 🙄 Whatever. He obviously doesn’t get why this is so important to me. But I mean, running is kind of a crazy sport and makes us do some weird things, so I can kind of understand that.
Anyway, after dinner we ordered a few desserts to go and then were going to walk around and explore the area we were in for a little bit, so Luke and I got coffee at the most fancy Starbucks I’ve ever been in ever. Haha it was pretty crazy! But after walking around for a few minutes we decided to call it a night and just hang out another time. I had a few sips of my coffee, but I knew if I drank the whole thing right before we went home and went to bed that I’d never sleep, so I just saved it instead. 🙂
I was very happy with my decision not to drink my coffee when I got up this morning. First off, I was able to get to sleep, which is pretty much necessary for me to function. Haha I don’t do well on minimal amounts of sleep. And second, I had a delicious and already made coffee waiting for me in the fridge. All I had to do was warm it up! Obviously it wasn’t as good as fresh coffee, but I’m not seeing why re-heated up coffee gets such a bad rap. It was still pretty good!
Getting out of bed was still a little bit hard this morning. We were out a little later than we had thought we’d be last night and like I said, I don’t function well when I don’t get enough sleep. Haha I woke up a little later than I would have liked, so I ended up getting around 7 hours which isn’t bad, but I still would have and always prefer to get 8 hours of sleep. That seems to be just the right amount for me. But anyway, I got up drank my re-heated coffee and ate the rest of my mac and cheese from last night. Breakfast of champions, obviously. 🙂 Then I went out and got my run done!
Since I got up later than I’d have liked I got outside on the road a little after 8 am. That’s actually the time I really like to run pretty much any time of the year that is not summer. In the summer I like to get up and out the door before the sun has been out for too long. But I got really lucky today and it was in the low 70’s and cloudy when I started my run, so not bad!!
All in all it was a relatively uneventful run. For a little bit it looked like I might get rained on and I was really hoping that I would, but it never happened. In fact, the sun actually came out when I had about 1.5 miles left to go and that really started to warm things up, which made the going a little bit rough, but I still got it done!
And with that my first week of training for Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days is pretty much done! I’ve got a rest day tomorrow and then it’s on to week 2!
I’m actually pretty surprised by how well this week has gone for me, considering that last week we were in Branson on vacation and I did zero running while we were there haha. Obviously that’s a pleasant surprise though! I’ve still got 15 more weeks to go and I know they wont all be smooth sailing, but I’m hoping that a lot of them end up as good as this week was! 🙂
But anyway, that’s all I’ve got for today! I hope you’ve had a super Saturday and have a great rest of the weekend!
I was still sick for a good portion of this week, but I definitely started to feel better and was pretty much recovered from this illness by the end of the week which was awesome! And bonus, I was able to do pretty much all of the running I wanted to accomplish. It was mostly slow and kinda boring stuff and some of it got cut a little shorter than I wanted, but hey, it was a vast improvement over last week and I will gladly take that! 🙂
3 easy miles
Marathon Monday. Wow! Still can’t get over Des Linden’s win at the Boston Marathon! That was just incredible!
So since I spent the whole morning watching the Elite coverage of the Boston Marathon, I didn’t end up running until around 12:30 that afternoon. That wasn’t a big deal, but it felt kinda weird haha. I like to get my running done and out of the way first thing in the morning that way I don’t have to worry about it throughout the day. Anyway, just did an uneventful 3 miles on Monday. After that I had to take care of all of the things I neglected to do since I spent so much time watching TV haha.
I was still feeling kinda bleh on Tuesday and had originally only planned to do 2-3 miles because I sill wasn’t feeling great. But it seemed like the more I ran the better I felt, so I ended up doing 5 haha. It wasn’t exactly fun and I spent a lot of time coughing and wiping my nose, but I’m glad I did it. 🙂
3 miles with a couple strides thrown in for fun
20 minutes of yoga/foam rolling
I was finally starting to feel better by Wednesday! Not at 100% but still, I was very happy with the improvement and it showed during my run! It was hard, but fun hard and not I’m still sick and feel like I’m dying, which I will gladly take! After my run I spent over 2 hours cleaning out our spare bedroom where the chickens had lived until Tuesday night when we finally moved them into the coop. That was an adventure in and of itself! Wednesday was a good day and you can read more about it here. 😉
30 minutes on the stationary bike
30 minutes of yoga
Cross training is a necessary evil as far as I’m concerned. I don’t particularly enjoy doing it, I usually find it to be boring, but I know it’s good for me. So I do it. Sometimes hahaha. But by Thursday I was feeling sooooo much better! Still probably not 100% better, I still had a cough, but for the most part I was feeling pretty good! 🙂
Friday was an interesting day. Started off with a run as usual. I warmed up with what was supposed to be a nice and easy mile, but my new favorite band finally released their new album the night before so obviously I had to listen to that while I ran. I new that was a bad idea but I did it anyway haha. New music makes me a happy camper. But it also makes me go out waaaay too fast during my warm up and then that tends to make the rest of the workout a huge suffer fest. Luckily it was a short on on Friday though haha. After my “warm up” I did some cadence drills (about a mile of ’em 🙂 ) and then cooled down with a little more easy running. Like I said, it was kinda a huge suffer fest, but it was also pretty fun!
And just for some clarification; I’ve been joking about The Longshot being my new favorite band for a while now (if you know me then you know I’m the biggest Green Day fangirl in ALL THE LAND!). But the thing is, it’s literally just another side band that the front man for Green Day has come up with. So its pretty much just Green Day with a few different people. Haha I still thing it’s fucking great though and I absolutely love their album. Hence the going out too fast during my warm up on Friday. 😉
Anyways, on Friday evening my brother-in-law, his girlfriend, and her two kids came over to our house to hang out. And so did one of my neighbor’s and her kid (the one who likes to come over and hang out with me). So for some reason all of the small children (they were 7, 4, and 3 years old) all flocked to me, fought for my attention, and over who got to sit in my lap. Small children terrify me. Haha so not sure why they all wanted to be my friend (well, except for my neighbor, like I said, she likes hanging out with me). So that went on for several hours and was exhausting. I passed out right away when I finally went to bed that night.
Saturday’s are usually my long run day. So the original plan was to do 8 miles. But between getting over an illness, going a little too hard during my workout on Friday, and then having 3 young children all over me the night before I was kinda worn out and just not feeling it. After about 2 miles I just started laughing at myself and was like “yeah, 8 miles definitely isn’t gonna happen today.” Then at about 3 miles I got chased to two little demon dogs that were running around unleashed in a non-fenced in front yard. Once the took off after me the followed my for a little bit, so I stopped and looked back to their house to see if their owner was out. She was, but she was just throwing her hands in the air, then covering her face, and I’m pretty sure she started crying… Like, I get that your dogs running off is a frustrating situation, but freaking out like that isn’t going to do anyone any good. Plus those little assholes were trying to bite at my ankles and I wasn’t about to try to catch them and bring them back to her. As far as I’m concerned that’s not my problem (and remember this is coming from the person who has caught and returned several dogs to their owners while out running). Ugh, I’ve grown to despise people who let their dogs run after people like that, then act like it’s the person who the dogs are chasing’s fault. Like, I’m on a public road. The law says that I can be here. And the law also says that your dogs can’t be out in public like that without a leash. Therefore, not my problem.
As someone who goes to great lengths to train her dogs not to do shit like that, and follow all the laws that pertain to dogs, I find it super frustrating when other people don’t. And then throw a fit whenever they let their dogs get into a potentially dangerous situation and are chasing/trying to bite a random passerby.
Anyway, I was in a standoff with those two dogs for several minutes, and had to resort to growling at them to keep them from coming close enough to bite me (usually a firm “no!” does the trick, but that didn’t work this time). Eventually some kid in a truck drove by and that distracted them long enough for me to get away. I’m not sure what happened to them after that, but again, not my problem.
After that it took me another 2 ish miles to loop back around to my house and once I got there I was just done. That was enough excitement for me that day. Oh well, aside from being chased by 2 little dogs (and can we just take a second to acknowledge that smaller dogs breeds are much more aggressive than most medium/large dog breeds?), I was happy with what I got done on Saturday. 🙂
And a well earned one, I think!!
Total Weekly Mileage: 19.20
Between getting over an illness and all of the shenanigans that happened this week, I still got shit done!! All things considered, I got a decent amount of miles in and got a tiny bit of cross training and stretching done. All in all, I felt like I had a productive week. And my Garmin is telling me that I’ve been productive, so go me!! 🙂
Look out half marathon number 3! I’m coming for you!! I feel like it’s gonna suck and I’m not going to be having much fun, but now I know I can do it!!
My long run this morning, it was pretty terrible. I’m not at all surprised by that though. This was the longest run I’ve done since August, so I kinda figured it was going to suck. Honestly most of my problem was probably mental. I didn’t sleep well last night and running 10 miles was literally the last thing I wanted to do. But I knew that if I didn’t get it done this morning that I probably never would, so I went out and did it. It sucked. It was slow. I had to fight for every single step that I took. But I did it and I’m probably better for it. Maybe I didn’t improve my fitness at all, but I think I made huge strides with my metal toughness today.
After my run I decided I needed to continue torturing myself and take an ice bath haha. Ice baths are usually a pretty miserable experience, but my legs always end up feeling a lot better in the hours and days following a long run and ice bath, so I suck it up and I do it. Haha the only problem with that was that I didn’t have any ice!
The ice maker in my freezer has been broken for quite some time now and I keep forgetting to get a bag of ice whenever I’m out and about. So when I had about 2 miles left in my run I texted Luke and asked him if he could get me some, and some chocolate milk too. 😉 He was at work, but I could have stopped by and picked it up once I was done. So he did get me what I asked for, but thanks to my awesome next door neighbor I didn’t have to go get it! She had gone there to talk to Luke to see if I could baby sit her daughter today, because she’s not feeling well and wants some time to just relax. So he told her I could (after he texted me and asked me first haha) and he sent my milk and ice with her, so by the time I got home it was sitting on my front porch. So yeah, my husband’s awesome, my neighbor’s awesome, and I was reminded that running really is a team sport. 🙂 Haha and I’m also baby sititng a 3 year old by myself today, which is waaay out of my comfort zone (I just don’t feel like I’m good with small children), but she’s a good kid and enjoys hanging out here.
Anyways, my excitement of not having to go get my stuff was very short lived, because I mean, I had to go spend 20 minutes sitting in a tub full of ice cold water. Fun times…Haha luckily Winchester decided to keep my company during that little adventure. Honestly he seemed very confused about the fact that I was fully clothed in a bathtub full of freezing cold water. And thanks to my wonderful husband I had many options as to what I was drinking while I was in there; I had my hot coffee to make the experience a little less terrible, my favorite flavor of Gatorade that he had picked up for me the other day and that I’d been sipping on during my run, and the chocolate milk that I’d asked for. 🙂
After my ice bath I ate a little snack and waited for about 30 minutes before I took a nice hot shower (I think I read somewhere that you’re supposed to wait a little bit after ice baths before you get into a hot shower, to let your core temperature get closer to normal by itself. I have no idea if that was long enough, but oh well. 😉 ), then attempted to nap. After laying down for a few minutes I knew that wasn’t going to happen. It seems like no matter how tired I am after a long run I can never seem to nap. Does anyone else have this problem?
Anyway, it’s 1:26 pm as I type this, and my neighbor is supposed to be here around 2 or 3 ish, so I need to go pick up the house and do a little bit of stretching before she gets here.
Alright, I probably don’t actually suck at sleeping, but the past couple of nights I just haven’t slept well and it kinda sucks. I’m thinking maybe I shouldn’t have just jumped right back into my training scheduled after skipping a long run and then taking a week off for an injury (ok, I know I shouldn’t have done it, but I’m stubborn), but what’s done is done and I’m pretty sure my body is pissed at me haha. Meh, I also think I’ll be fine in a few days. Garmin told me that it was going to take me 4 days to recover from my long run last Sunday and I’m beginning to think that wasn’t an over exaggeration.

So, I literally did nothing but sit on my couch yesterday. I got a lot of reading done though (I’ve got about 8 thousand books that I need to read but just haven’t gotten around to yet), so go me!! Aaand after waking up tired again this morning and looking at my sleep chart, I’ve decided that another day off from running is probably a good idea. So, after I’m done with this post I’m probably going to go do some yoga and stretching and foam rolling. Thanks to the ice bath I took on Sunday after my 9 miler, my legs actually feel really good! But it’s probably still a good idea to give them some more TLC. 🙂
Also, just a quick shout out to the person on Instagram who commented about how much worse their night of sleep was. Gosh I hate “one uppers”. That is literally one of my biggest pet peeves. Like, just because you had it worse doesn’t mean someone else isn’t entitled to complain about something going on with them. That shit drives me crazy. And so does unsolicited advise, which is also something I got on Instagram today, when someone else told me that my sleep chart actually looks normal. Like, no dude, that’s totally not normal for me and since you don’t know me there’s a good chance that you wouldn’t know that, and therefore you’re “helpful” comment just irritated me. I know I probably shouldn’t get so worked up over stuff like that, but it’s just sooo annoying. I very much believe that unless someone is explicitly asking for your advice, you shouldn’t just go around handing it out, because in most situations there is probably a good chance that you don’t know 100% what’s going on with the other person. And one uppers are just super obnoxious…
Oh and I’m pretty sure the meter man opened the gate to my backyard because the dogs were barking at him while he was in the easement. I made them come in once they started doing it, but once he made his way across the street to one of the neighbor’s yards, I let them back out (what can I say, they like being outside). Well seconds later I see Finn, Dean, and Ace running across my front yard, so I called them back inside (luckily they’re all trained well and come the second they’re called). So I checked the gate and it was wide open and pushed inwards. 1. The dogs have never opened that gate before. 2. Even if they did I feel like it should have been pushed outward and probably not opened all the way. And 3. I know for a fact it was shut before hand, because the dogs had been in the yard all morning. So I’m pretty sure he opened it…Jokes on him though, because they went running after him when I let them back out haha. Luckily though I noticed them before anything bad could happen.
Anyways, aside from my not-so-great night of sleep and annoying people, I’m actually in a pretty good mood today! It’s beautiful out, the temperature is starting to go down a little bit, and you can just barely feel little hints of fall in the air. It’s great!! I’ve been telling Luke that I think it’s going to be a short summer and so far it’s definitely looking that way! Later this week the and over the weekend the highs are supposed to go back up into the mid/high 80’s but then after that it drops to the mid/low 70’s. Haha I sure hope that happens, and then that trend continues and that fall gets here fast! I’m so over summer and am very ready for fall running!!
Plus my knee (the reason I had to take a week off) is feeling much better! I was worried about how it was going to hold up during my long run on Sunday, but it did very well! There was a little bit of pain in the beginning but around mile 4 it started feeling much better and by the time I had finished it actually didn’t hurt at all! Yay! Now hopefully it will just stay fine because I’m not entirely sure what I did to hurt it in the first place haha.
But anyways, that is all I’ve got for today so I’m off to do some yoga! Happy Tuesday!
