Weekly Recap December 4th-10th, 2017

Monday:

  • RWRunStreak Day 12: 2.5 miles
  • 30 Day Shred Day 2

The plan for Monday was actually 3 miles but once I got to 2.5 I quite haha. I figured that was close enough. 😉 Anyways, got up, got my run done, then did day two of the 30 Day Shred. Oh man, I was tired, sore, but I still did it! My legs actually felt a lot better today though. They’re definitely not as sore/tired as they have been in the past couple of days, so I guess they’re adjusting to the streaking thing. 🙂

How awesome are my matching skills haha!? Dear Santa, Ashley could use another pair of black running tights. 😉

Tuesday:

  • RWRunStreak Day 13: 1.5 miles
  • 30 Day Shred Day 3

Did you guys know I have a super power? It just so happens to be catching loose dogs! 🐶 Lol so while attempting to get in a mile for day 13 of #rwrunstreak I saw this guy out running around, so I called him and he came right to me (seriously, it’s my super power. 😉). So I grabbed him, called his owner, and we hung out for 5 ish minutes until his owner got there. Problem solved, Ashley saves the day! 😄 So I turn onto a different street and try to continue on my way, but I end up being chased by ANOTHER dog. And I know this dog and he’s not my biggest fan. You see, I run past his house almost every day and he’s always on a tie out near the road and he always barks/growls at me. Understandably so, he’s just protecting what is his. The problem is today he finally had his chance to teach me a lesson and he was definitely going to take it! He came running at me, hackles raised and growling. So I tried talking to him and letting him sniff my hand, but he wasn’t having it and he snapped at me. So his owner saw him and came running at him, so the dog took off running (pro tip, if your dog ever gets loose don’t run after him, he’ll just think it’s a fun game and keep running away). So I saw my chance to get away and bailed onto another street. Usually I would have helped this guy catch the dog, but like I said, he doesn’t like me and I didn’t want to get bit. Besides, I already got one dog back to where he needed to be to day. So that’s my story for today. I’m just out there saving the world, one loose dog at a time!!🐕😄

Wednesday:

  • RWRunStreak Day 14: 2 miles

Fuck me. All of my running plans for the next few days just went out the window.☹️ My brother in law came here last night, and he likes to use his fucking vape right on the front porch and then open the door right after he does so his huge chemical trails follow him right into the house. Not only is that super disgusting, but It hardcore fucks up my lungs because I have asthma. Luckily it’s not that bad, but vape stuff and cigarette smoke always causes me a lot of problems…Anyway, I wanted to do 4 miles today but I knew that wasn’t gonna happen. Honestly I’m impressed that I made it through 2.

Thursday:

  • RWRunStreak Day 15: 1 Mile
  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike

Nothing fancy. Just a mile to keep the streak alive. 🙂

Friday:

  • RWRunStreak Day 16: 1 mile

After a long day of Christmas shopping, gift wrapping, and light hanging (I talk in depth about all of my Christmas time adventures here 🙂 ), I still managed to get a mile done! Hahaha not gonna lie, after being out and about all day running was the last thing I wanted to do, but I’m glad I did. I ended up feeling a lot better afterwards.

Saturday:

  • RWRunStreak Day 17: 2 miles
  • 45 minutes on the stationary bike

My asthma was still kinda acting up on Saturday, so I did two miles and then switched to the stationary bike. Not the kind of run I wanted to do, but at least I’m keeping the streak going and I’m still moving!

Sunday:

  • RWRunStreak Day 18: 3 miles
  • 30 Day Shred Day 4

Running has felt incredibly difficult lately. Probably thanks to my asthma and brother in law but it’s still really frustrating. But at least I made it through 3 miles today. 🙂

Streaking Is Hard

But it’s starting to get easier. At least I think it is haha. Accomplished 2.5 miles for day 12 of #RWRunStreak. 🙂 The plan was actually 3, but I’m super tired and once I got to 2.5 I figured that was close enough. 😉 On the bright side, my legs are feeling a lot less sore/tired today so  that’s good! I guess they’re starting to adjust to the whole streaking thing.

img_8100

How super awesome are my matching skills?! 😉

After my run I did day 2 of the 30 Day Shred. Now that was really hard. Mostly because my upper body is crazy sore today. But I suppose that’s just another reason to stick with this workout program. My upper body has always been pathetically weak and that’s something I really need to work on. So I am working on it. 🙂

img_8102

Right now I’m motivating myself to keep up with this workout program, the streak, upping my running mileage, cross training, and stretching, by telling myself it’s all pre-marathon training. Because I want to train for and run a full marathon in 2019! I think I’ve kinda mentioned that here before already, but I’ve already been looking into local marathons and trying to figure out which one it is that I’m gonna want to do. 🙂 A couple of people have asked me why I don’t do one next year in 2018. Well the answer to that is basically what I mentioned above. I want to build up my running base and mileage, get stronger, and hopefully less injury prone. So that’s the plan! Spend next year really working on all of that and then hopefully I’ll be ready to tackle my first marathon in 2019!

Anyways, since I am so tired from this streak I feel like I haven’t been getting a whole lot accomplished haha. I’ve been sleeping in a little bit every morning, I napped for an hour and a half yesterday, and I’ve just been focusing on recover activities right now. I’ve been using my self massage stick thing-y on my quads for a few minutes pretty much everyday, stretching, wearing compression gear, and stuff like that. So yeah, I feel like my whole life is revolving around running and recovering from running right now. But I’m thinking that tiredness will go away once my body adjusts a little bit more and I get stronger. This is something that I’ve been wanting to do for a while, not just streaking but upping my mileage as well, so I’m just gonna stick with it because I know it will eventually get easier. 🙂

And I say that I feel like I’m not getting anything accomplished and feel almost lazy, but I still won both step challenges that I was competing in last week, have managed to keep the house in somewhat decent shape, wrapped a bunch of Christmas presents, spent a good amount of time cleaning and doing/putting away laundry today, and still had time to walk one of the dogs. Haha and we don’t go for walks around the block, our walks tend to be around 2 ish miles every time. Sometimes longer. 🙂 So I guess I’m not actually being as lazy and I feel like I am.

Anyways, I suppose that’s all I’ve got for today. I hope everyone has a great week!

Friday Fives: Favorite Fitness YouTube Channels

I don’t have a gym membership so when I first started getting into fitness and losing weight back in 2012, I did a lot of Jillian Michaels’ DVDs. I definitely got a lot stronger and fitter doing her workout routines, but I also got really really bored with them (which is actually how I started getting into running, but that’s a whole other story). That’s when YouTube became my saving grace when it comes to cross training. Believe it or not, you can get a really great workout done at home with nothing but a yoga mat and your own body!

You can probably tell that I really favor Pilates and yoga channels/workouts. That’s because they make me feel really good, I’ve yet to get bored with them (which is super important to me), and I can get a really great strength session done with just my body weight or maybe a few dumbbells which is super convenient!

So here are five of my all time favorite fitness YouTube channels!

1. Blogilates

I’ve been following Cassey Ho through her blog and Pop Pilates videos since 2013, which is around the time she started getting really popular, I think. But there is a reason that that she’s so popular around the interwebz and that’s because her workouts are absolutely killer! She can make you hurt and absolutely want to die during a 10 minute workout, all while smiling and acting all peppy and basically cheering you on during the whole thing. It’s actually pretty great!

She’s also got plenty of beginner’s workouts that focus mainly on getting your form correct. Which I think is really awesome, because I think sometimes we all need a refresher on how to preform the moves correctly or if you’re just getting started it teaches you to do the moves in the most effective way and without the risk of getting injured.

She also has a really awesome video series called “Cheap Clean Easts”, so if you thing that eating healthy or clean can be really expensive or hard you might want to check out those videos

If you’re looking for a great way to get stronger and all around healthier at home I highly recommend checking out her YouTube channel. 🙂

2. Yoga With Adriene

I think Adriene is probably my most favorite yoga instructor on YouTube. Most of her videos are great for all levels of people, from very beginners to experienced yogis. I really really really love that she focuses mainly on “finding what feels good” in that moment for your body and mind. I feel like a lot of yoga videos on YouTube getting into the poses as perfectly as possible and Adriene doesn’t do that. She encourages you to get into the poses in a way that feels right for you and gives you plenty of different options to get there. She also talks a lot about all of the mental benefits that yoga can bring. She has videos for anxiety, stress, loneliness, and even broken hearts, along with videos for your abs, or flexibility, or whatever. I just think it’s great that she takes the time to remind you that yoga isn’t all about having rock hard abs, or being super flexible, or being able to get into crazy poses, but that it’s also not a bad thing to want things like that too. 🙂

3. 5 Parks Yoga

I’ve actually just started getting into 5 Parks Yoga, but so far from what I’ve done, I really enjoy this channel. They have some really awesome deep stretch and strength building videos that I really like! I also really like the fact that their videos tend to be longer than the usual 5-15 minute yoga video’s you tend to find on YouTube. 5 Parks Yoga’s tend to be anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, which is fantastic because you can get a full workout in without having to start another video. 🙂

4. Livestrong Women

Not gonna lie, I actually found the Livestrong Women channel because Cassy Ho did a few videos for them a while ago. Then I found out that Tara Stiles also did a video series for them. 🙂

I really like this channel because it has a really wide variety of videos; There are challenges, Pilates based workouts, HIIT based workouts, recipes, demos on how to properly do exercise, etc. I find it to be very useful when I want to switch things up or try something new. 🙂

5. Tara Stiles

Tara Stiles has basically been my yoga idol ever since I’ve gotten into fitness. She focuses a lot on moving with gentleness, gracefulness, and ease. Three things that I am usually not, but hey, she gives me something to work towards. 🙂

Now, I know I just said I like 5 Parks Yoga because their videos are a little bit longer, but I do appreciate the fact that most of the video’s on Tara Stiles YouTube channel are relatively short. If I’m just not feeling the whole yoga thing, I can do one of her 5 minute videos and that’s still better than nothing! Or if I’m crunched for time the shorter videos are a little easier to squeeze into my scheduled. Plus I like to mix and match her shorter videos. So I could do one of her 5 minute flexibility videos, followed by one for abs, followed by one for headstands, and so on and so forth. Being able to do that usually keeps me from getting bored. Sometimes I find it hard to make it all the way through a 30 minute yoga video, but it I mix and match like that, I can go for an hour and not get bored! 🙂

Weekly Recap: January 23rd-29th, 2017

Monday:

  • Jillian Michaels’ No More Trouble Zones work out video

I made it all the way through the almost hour long video this time!! I had to do a bunch of beginner’s modifications which kinda sucks. A few years ago I was able to do the whole thing without modifications like it was nothing. At the very least that just proves that I’ll be able to do it again, as long as I stick with the whole strength training thing, which I totally intend on doing. 🙂

Tuesday:

  • Easy 2 miles

Well, that’s almost a lie haha. I felt really good during Tuesday’s run, so during the second mile I picked up the pace a little bit and did some down hill running with reckless abandon, which is my absolute favorite way to take on down hills, by the way. That’s probably not the best way to go about downhills, but oh man is it fun!! And slightly dangerous during slippery conditions, actually. But for the most part I run for the fun of it, so I’m not about to deny myself this little pleasure.

Wednesday:

  • Easy 3 miles
  • 20 minutes of yoga

My original intent when I set out on this run was to do 5 miles; 1 mile to warm up and cool down, and intervals for the 3 miles in between. Obviously that didn’t happen though. My shins were feeling a little achy. Probably because my quads were feeling a little tight. I’ve noticed that those two things usually come hand in hand. So a mile into this run I decided to keep it short and easy instead of pushing anything too hard.

I also did a very tiny amount of exploring on Wednesday! A week or so ago, I saw a car out in what I had always thought was just a big empty field. Every day after that, I’d run by that field, trying to find that road and figure out how to get there, and on Wednesday I finally figured it out! It’s really weird though, there are just a bunch of random roads in the middle of this field. They all look pretty new  too. I’m wondering if at one point someone was going to build another subdivision (ewww) but it just never happened (yay!). That or eventually someone is going to build something out there (gross). Either way, I’m definitely going to be exploring out there more, even though I kinda get the feeling that I’m not supposed to be out there haha. I also found a pasture full of cows. If anything, I’m going to be there a lot just to look at the cows! I miss having cows…

Thursday:

  • Rest Day

Not gonna lie, I’ve been feeling pretty rundown this week. I’m thinking it’s because I’ve been waking up with Luke at 5:45 every morning. Usually I get up around 7-7:30 am, so I’ve been getting an hour to an hour and a half less sleep than I usually do. Who would have  thought that extra hour would make such a big difference?! And now that I think about it, I haven’t been eating nearly enough protein and am menstruating so I’m probably a little bit lacking in the iron department. So those are some pretty big reasons as to why I’m feeling so bleh. Anyway, a rest day was very much necessary.

Friday:

  • 2.67 miles
  • a little bit of foam rolling

So, Friday morning I woke up sore everywhere. EVERYWHERE. Especially in my quads. That was kinda weird, considering I didn’t do anything exercise wise aside from walking the dogs on Thursday. Maybe it was super duper delayed onset muscle soreness from my workout on Monday? Considering my new sleep scheduled and lack of protein I suppose I can’t rule it out. So for my run I did a slow lap around my neighborhood and called it good. 🙂

Saturday:

  • Rest Day

I did some catching up with sleep on Saturday. I originally got up at 5:45 am like I have been, but around 6 I went back to bed and slept until about 7:40. It was great. 🙂 I also talked all about why I took a rest day on a Saturday here, since I don’t usually do that.

Sunday:

  • Rest Day

Feeling better today! My legs don’t feel heavy and gross anymore. But I’m still working on refueling and completely recovering before I run again. I’ve been doing some thinking and I’ve realized I haven’t been treating my body very well, and it’s no wonder it started rebelling against me. I’m working on it though. 🙂

11/16/16

Yesterday was my 25th birthday! Yay! I’m a quarter of a century old!

Luke took the day off from work, so he could take me and the dogs to the park, then we went to the mall and he got me pants for my birthday (hey, it’s what I wanted! 😉), and then we got cheese burgers at a local restaurant. I really wanted a cheese burger hahaha. So that was a fun day.

Anyway, I’m 4 days post half marathon and I don’t plan on running again until Thanksgiving. I thought not running was going to drive me crazy, it sure did last year, but at this point I’m actually glad I’m taking some time off. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how I feel in a couple of days though, my quads are still kinda sore, so it’s hard to want to run when walking still feels a bit awkward!

Since I’m not running at the moment I’m focusing on strength. This week I plan on doing a lot of Blogilates since she only really works one body part per video, and I’m not ready to work my best yet. Monday I did an arm video and today I plan on doing abs. Next week I’ll probably stick with Jillian Michaels videos. Her videos are tough, but man do they work! Then on Thanksgiving I start the Runer’s World winter streak! So I’ll be running at least 1 mile every day from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, but I’m still going to make sure I’m doing a lot of strength work.

Alrighty then! I just wanted to give you guys a quick update on what my plan is for the next few weeks. Now I need to finish my breakfast and start walking! I want to get in 20,000 steps today! My dad invited me to a step challenge on Garmin Connect and he’s currently winning. I can’t let that happen. 😉

Happy Wednesday!
