February 17th, 2018

Hello friends! I hope everyone has had a super Saturday! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

img_9565

This photo is kind of irrelevant haha. I’ve just been wearing these socks all day and they make me super happy. πŸ˜‰

I’m not sure if I can describe my Saturday as “super”, but I did have a pretty good day. πŸ™‚ I’m still not running thanks to my toe, but it is starting to look and feel a lot better! And the tooth that had the root canal seems to be healing nicely as well! It’s still a little sore, especially where I had the Novocaine shots, but other than that it’s doing great! Now I just need to get a crown on it and it should be good to go! I’m still feeling a little bit itchy from the antibiotics I had though (I had an allergic reaction to them). I only took two doses of it so I was hoping the rash wouldn’t last for very long, and for the most part it’s gone, I’ve just got a few itchy spots left and it’s kind of obnoxious haha. But all in all, my ailments are healing and I’m very happy about that! I was in kind of miserable shape there for a little bit, so it feels great to finally be on the mend!

Just for comparison, the photos below show my toe on February 7th, and 16th. So it’s definitely healing! I’m still kinda limping around on it, but it definitely feels better than it did on the 7th when I hurt it!

It’s kind of annoying that I’m always doing this kind of stuff my myself though. I swear almost every time I get hurt and am unable to run, it happens because I did something stupid or klutzy (like slipping, falling, and hitting my toe on the edge of my couch). Most of my injuries don’t come from running, although I have had my fair share of those as well. I’m just super injury prone, I guess.

img_9728

This is my husband’s assessment of my life. It’s also the reason he won’t let me get on the roof to take down our Christmas lights EVEN THOUGH IT”S THE MIDDLE OF FEBRUARY!!!Β

Anyway, 4 years ago today to my parents’ extreme disappointment, I got my second tattoo!

img_9743

Haha I guess they weren’t too fond of their eldest daughter getting a relatively large, black skull permanently put onto her body. πŸ˜‰ I, on the other hand, think it’s fucking fantastic! A lot of people don’t seem to agree with me on that one though, but that just makes me like it even more haha. The artist who did it was pretty awesome! She did a tattoo on Luke a few days before she did mine and they both turned out really great! I bled a lot during this one (it took a lot of ink haha), but even so there is very little visible scaring and 4 years later it still looks really good!

And funnily enough, February 17th also just so happens to be Billie Joe Armstrong’s birthday! That didn’t happen on purpose, it was just a really weird coincidence. Still kinda neat though. πŸ™‚ So yeah, wishing the happiest of birthdays to my favorite front-man!

I wish I knew who to properly credit this photo for! All I know is that I found it on pinterest.Β

Speaking of tattoos, I want another one (or two, or ten. πŸ˜‰ ). So does Luke. And it would appear that we will be going on another family vacation this summer (this year we’re going to Branson, MO), and I’m thinking we might end up coming home from that trip with a little more ink. πŸ˜‰ We’ll have to wait and see, but we both have several ideas of things we want done, and I’m pretty sure we’re just going to start making it a tradition to get tattooed while we’re on vacation, because why not?! Haha I mean, we both got tattooed while we were in Florida and that was a lot of fun! πŸ™‚ I also kinda want another ear piercing, but I absolutely hate healing piercings. It usually takes my body a while to finally get used to them. So maybe that wont happen. Or maybe it will. I can’t make up my mind haha.

But anyway, that’s all I’ve got for today. Haha I don’t have a lot going on right now, especially since I’m not currently running, so I feel like I don’t have a lot to talk about. Oh well. Hopefully it wont be too much longer until I can run again!

Until next time,

My First Dental Appointment In 10 Years, Game Plan For My Teeth, And A Toe Update

Yup. You read that right. Until yesterday I hadn’t been to the dentist in 10 years. I got my bottom set of wisdom teeth removed when I was 16, and that was it. Mostly because dental work is freaking expensive. Actually healthcare in general here in the USA is freaking expensive and the whole system, including insurance, can be pretty dumb. Hence the reason I haven’t been to a dentist in 10 years or to a GP in 4 years. I do got to the gynecologist once a year though. That is 100% covered by my insurance, including birth control (as long as I get the generic brand. I’m pretty sure I’d have to pay a little bit to get the name brand. But the generic works for me, so I’m gonna continue having my insurance pay for it). So at least there’s that!

Anyway, my teeth are kinda bad haha. When I was a teenager I didn’t exactly take care of them…I try to take better care of them now, but maybe it’s just too little, too late. My mom’s also told me that my dad’s teeth aren’t so great either, so I might have inherited that from him. Either way, they aren’t great and I’ve had a few (one in particular) that are getting particularly bad. Bad enough that I absolutely had to get them looked at. So finally got a dentist appointment set up to look and the problem, assess what needs to be done, and then refer me to a specialist. Good thing that got set up when it did, because a few days later things really started going downhill for me.

The particularly bad tooth was definitely infected. That was something I was almost positive of. And then on Saturday I got a fever and the pain in that tooth was so bad that I couldn’t really eat much. But since I had a fever I didn’t really feel like eating anyway. Luckily it wasn’t a high fever or anything, although I hadΒ terribleΒ body aches. I think they might have been the worst I’ve ever had! My temperature finally came down to my normal of 97.5 on Sunday, so thank goodness that was short lived, but I still couldn’t really eat much. Sad face…

img_9613-1.jpg

My fever on Sunday only got up to 101.7. So not too bad. Haha as a kid I was notorious for getting super high fevers (I’m talking 104, 105 degrees) and I was worried about it getting super high and that would have been terrible.

On Monday I was still having trouble eating, but I saw the dentist at 2 pm and he solved that problem for me haha! But first I got a few x-rays taken of my problem teeth, he look at those and at the teeth themselves and told me what was up and what my options were. After much discussion about what our insurance will or will not cover, and how much money our insurance will actually pay, we finally had a game plan. So, I need two root canals, one extraction, and some other minor work. But I cannot afford to get that all done at once. So for now I’m going to get a root canal and then a crown done in the tooth that’s really causing me problems, then wait a year until our insurance will reset and we’ll have more money available through them, and then get the second root canal done, and then just go from there. So at least we have a plan! πŸ™‚

So the dentist has referred me to a specialist to get the root canal done, so I need to set that up, but for now he’s put me on antibiotics and pain meds. Specifically, I’m supposed to be taking clidamycin once every 8 hours, and a hydrocodone every 4-6 hours as needed. First off, I didn’t realize he was gonna prescribe me pain meds! I figured he’d tell me to just keep taking ibuprofen. Although, the problem with pain meds is that I don’t like taking them haha. Back when I was 13 and had an appendectomy the hospital sent me home with codeine that I took maybe once or twice. I just didn’t like the way it made me feel. And when I was 16 I had my wisdom teeth they sent me home with Vicodin. I took that twice. It made me puke both times, and I hate puking more than anything in the world, so after that I stopped taking it and just suffered through the pain. That was kinda terrible, but I lived haha. So at first I was kinda skeptical about taking the hydrocodone, but I really wanted to eat, so I took one last night and holy cow did it work!!

Initally right after I took it I was kinda freaking out (hello anxiety) thanks to all of the issues pain meds have given me before. But after about half an hour I felt pretty darn great!! Hydrocodone makes one of my sisters really loopy (she had to take it for her hip dysplasia) so I was wondering if I was going to get the same affect. I didn’t though. I was just felt super float-y and calm and kinda dizzy. But not bad dizzy. It was the dizzy feeling you get when you’re drunk, but without all the grossness that comes after that hahaha. Not gonna lie, it was a fun experience. I think mostly because it did kinda shut my anxiety up for a little bit. Oh and I was finally able to eat, so that was fucking great!! It also made my probably broken toe feel really good too, so that was a nice little benefit. πŸ™‚ But so far I just took the one at around 3:40 pm yesterday and I’m still pretty much pain free in my tooth, so that’s pretty freaking great. But I’m sure the antibiotics are kicking in and helping that situation as well.

But unfortunalty, I had to stop taking the antibiotics after 2 whole doses (one last night and one this morning). So, I’m allergic to penicillin. I learned that when I was in the hospital after my appendectomy. It made me break out into hives. Which of course I informed the dentist of, hence the clindamycin. But it turns out I’m allergic to that too. A few hours after taking my second dose this morning I started breaking out in a rash. It’s not too bad, but it itches and is super annoying… So I called the pharmacist and then the dentist earlier and they both put me down as allergic to it in their records and now the dentist is calling the pharmacist to try to figure out what I should take, and I guess one of them will call be back when they do. Damn…I was so prepared too! I’ve got this gross probiotic supplement that I’ve taken twice now, andΒ  also have some greek yogurt on the ready too. Haha oh well, at least I’ll be prepared for when they figure out another kind of antibiotic to give me.

img_9654

Finn thought he wanted some of this gross probiotic supplement. Finn was wrong.

And on top of all of that, my toe is probably broken. Well, I’m thinking I probably just fractured it, but either way, I’m just having all sorts of fun right now…So the toe thing happened last Wednesday, when I slipped, fell, and hit it on the edge of my couch. Oh and then ran 4 miles on it because initially it only hurt a little bit and wasn’t bruised or swollen or anything. That was probably a bad idea and I haven’t run since. I have been able to stationary bike a bit though, so at least there’s that. πŸ™‚ Today most of the swelling has gone down, but it’s still really really bruised. Haha but it doesn’t hurt at all this morning. Thanks hydrocodone!! I’ve been doing my best to stay off of it, icing it, keeping it elevated, and taping it to the toe next to it. So hopefully it’ll heal quickly. But so far it seems to be taking it’s sweet time…

img_9658-1

Haha see that purple line going down my toe? I’m pretty sure that’s the exact spot my poor toe hit the couch. πŸ™‚

So in hopes to speed up the healing process I made some bone broth over the weekend, using the recipe from Run Fast Eat Slow. I’ve just been drinking it by it’s self, and it is really really good!! Not sure if it’s actually going to help speed up the healing process or not, but it’s suppsed to be full of calcium, magnesium, collagen, and all sorts of other good stuff, so I figure it just might help. πŸ˜‰

img_9563

So yeah, that’s my life currently. I’ve got a probably fractured toe, a definitely infected tooth (which is getting taken care of soon), and now I’m having an allergic reaction to my antibiotics, which I’ve had to stop taking. Oh man I’m having a hell of a time right now…

I suppose now I’m gonna go slather myself in topicalΒ benadryl because I don’t have the oral kind, and cannot go obtain any because my husband and I only have one car, and he’s at work. And wait and see what kind of antibiotic they’re planning on trying on me next…Hopefully they’ll find one that works for me.

I hope you’re Tuesday is fantastic!

Fall Is Almost Here, Two Short Runs, An Injury Update, Compression Gear, and Another Furry Friend

First and foremost, #ThrowbackThursday anyone? πŸ˜‰ Ah man, throwback Thursday never ceases to amuse me. I just think it’s fun to take a look back at past life experiences, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they might be.

So, since fall is almost here and I’m so super duper excited about that, I went perusing through the camera roll on my phone this morning looking for the photos of my jack-o-lanterns from last year, because they were pretty darn spiffy if you ask me!!

I was so super excited about how the 13.1 pumpkin turned out! I was kinda worried about it because I thought it was going to be hard to tell what it was, but once it was lit up it looked pretty good! And look at all the hair I used to have!! Haha not gonna lie, looking back I kinda regret cutting it all off. But it was sooo much nicer not having to deal with all of that hot hair over the summer. But anyways, now I’ve got to figure out what I want to do with this years pumpkins! Haha obviously I’ve still got some time, but I take this stuff very seriously! πŸ˜‰ We’re starting to get close to my favorite time of year and I’m so super stoked!!

img_6248

TRUE!!!!!

So now that we’re into the middle of September we’re starting to experience a bit of fall like weather in the morning/evening. The highs in the afternoon have been in the 80’s though so that still kinda sucks, but we’ll get to the colder weather eventually. πŸ™‚ But anyways, the nice weather in the morning is really reallyΒ reallyΒ making me miss running. Fall running is the best running (except once winter rolls around, then I’ll spend all season telling you that winter running is the best πŸ˜‰ ) and right now I definitely feel like I’m missing out!!

I have managed to do two very short runs this week. 2 miles on Monday and 2 more miles on Wednesday. That’s definitely not the kind of running I should be doing considering that I’m supposed to be training for my 3rd half marathon, but at the moment it’s the only kind of running I can do. And it’s still totally better than not running at all!!

Unfortunately the 4 miles that I’ve run this week were not pain free miles. During both runs my knee started to ache a bit during the second mile and on Wednesday I felt it a little bit in my shin as well. That was no bueno…but it’s still not as bad as it was last month and I like to think it’s finally starting to get better. Healing this whole situation has definitely been a slow process, but I’m glad that it seems to be getting better without the help of a doctor. Because IΒ reallyΒ didn’t want to have to go see one haha.

So I think I’ve mentioned before that I’ve been taking R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation) very seriously in order to get this thing taken care of. Obviously the rest has come in the form of not running, but I’ve also been trying to take it easy and walk a little less if it starts bothering me. I was icing it for a while but that doesn’t seem to be doing anything for it anymore. And honestly I’m pretty sure icing is really only effective for the first like, 48 hours or something like that after you’ve been injured (I’m not entirely sure about that though, so don’t quote me on it. πŸ˜‰ ). So that brings me to compression and elevation. As far as elevation goes, I’ve just been propping my leg up with a pillow in the evening whenever i’m sitting down watching TV, but my compression game has definitely been VERY strong!

img_6164

I’m sporting a very old compression sock and a very new compression knee sleeve in this photo.

So Luke’s just as determined to get me healthy again as quickly as possible so he’s been making me experiment with some new gear haha. First he got me the knee sleeve pictured above. Oh boy does that thing work! I didn’t realize that my knee was actually hurting while I was walking until I started wearing this thing around haha (this right here is why I have to be super careful when it comes to injures. I have a ridiculous pain tolerance and sometimes I don’t notice that anythings going on until after it goes away and I start feeling normal again…). And after wearing it for about a week I was able to do my two short runs this week, which was obviously a huge improvement over not being able to run at all. πŸ™‚ So because I had quite a bit of success with the knee brace, Luke thought hey, if a little bit of compression worked, why not go with EVEN MORE compression. So he came home with a pair of full on compression tights for me the other day haha. I kinda wish he hadn’t spent so much money on me for this stuff, compression gear (especially these tights, holy shit) isn’t cheap…but I mean, they are some super spiffy looking tights. πŸ™‚

Processed with Rookie Cam

I’ve only worn them once, so at this point there’s really no telling if they made a difference, but they’re still super spiffy. πŸ™‚

So all of that actually came about because I had ordered myself a new pair of Zensah compression calf sleeves (like I said, my compression socks are really old, and I’ve had to cut the toes off of both pairs that I have because they make my toes uncomfortable, so I figured sleeves were the way to go. πŸ˜‰ ) and a sports bra at some point last week, I think? The only problem with that is that Zensah’s warehouse is located in southern Florida so they had to close up shop and evacuate because of hurricane Irma, so I guess they’re not entirely sure when they’ll be able to ship out anything. And like, obviously that’s totally understandable and I don’t mind waiting, but Luke is not a patient person and apparently that applies to me as well, and that’s how I ended up with even more compression gear hahahahaha.

So like, I know compression gear is one of those things that some people absolutely swear by and other people just think is a placebo kinda thing, but it’s always seemed to work for me so I’m just gonna roll with it! πŸ™‚

Whew, alrighty then! Last on my agenda of this to talk about today is our newest furry friend! Everyone, meet Alfred!

img_6368

So kind of on a whim I guess, Luke decided that our other ferret, Bruce, needed a friend. So he went and got him one last night. Hahaha if you haven’t noticed, once Luke sets his mind on something he just goes and does it. And that’s how we ended up with another ferret. It’s really funny because everyone thinks all of the animals were my idea (because I’m the huge animal lover who was raised on a farm), but aside from the cats and Lily, Luke’s the one who went out and got the rest of them haha. I mean, I’m not complaining though. πŸ˜‰

At first we were both a little wary about introducing them to each other. Luckily we have two ferret cages so if it didn’t go well we could have kept them separate, but it looks like that’s not going to be a problem. They pretty much liked each other right off the bat and are already becoming fast friends. So I guess Luke was right, getting Bruce a friend was a good idea. And I mean, what good is Bruce Wayne without Alfred Pennyworth? πŸ˜‰

img_6385

Okey dokey then! That’s all I’ve got to talk about for today! I’ve been doing a terrible job at keeping up with everyone lately, so what’s going on with you? Are you excited about fall? Any up coming races, spiffy new gear, new furry friends, new PR’s, or are you sidelined with an injury as well?

Anyways, I hope everyone has a happy Friday eve, a great Friday tomorrow, and an even better weekend!

Running Keeps Me Sane

And it’s only when my klutzy, accident/injury prone ass gets hurt and can’t run that I really, truly understand that.

That’s currently where I’m at. I’m hurt, can’t run, and driving myself insane with things that are probably just a result of my having anxiety, but you know, also just regular life stuff. Haha I probably need to see a doctor about both of those things, but I’m a very stubborn person who does not like, and has had several bad experiences with doctors. One day I’ll tell the story of how my high pain tolerance and a team of equally as stubborn as me doctors almost killed me when I was 13 and suffering from a ruptured appendix (although initially the doctors couldn’t figure that out). That’s a super long story though, and I don’t think I still have any photos from that time in my life. Eventually I want to talk to my mom, dad, sisters, brother, and grandma about it though, and type it all out. But for now, wanna see my scar? Too bad if you don’t, because I’m gonna show you anyway. πŸ˜‰

So yeah, every doctor I’ve ever seen since I was 13 likes to touch it and say “you had an old fashioned appendectomy!” Yes, I did! Because it was ruptured and they couldn’t get all the nastiness out the newfangled way they do it now with like, lasers and shit. And I absolutely hate when people touch it, but doctors always freaking do it without asking… I’ve also got a bunch of scar tissue in my abdomen that can uncomfortable if I sit/lay in certain ways for too long, and apparently that could potentially cause issues if I were to ever get pregnant. I don’t plan on doing that anytime soon though. πŸ˜‰

Anyways, I’ve rambled on enough about that.

So ever since the Green Day concert last month (which I don’t regret going to at all before anyone asks πŸ˜‰ ) I haven’t been able to do much running. I think I must have hurt something in my left knee/calf (I’m honestly still unsure as to where the pain is originating from, all I know is that it hurts every time I try to run on it) with all of the standing/dancing that I did. Oh man, that was so much fun and I really wish we could go see them again…

Processed with Rookie Cam

But anyway, the week of the 14th-20th of August I ran a total of one whole mile. But I thought, hey, maybe a week pretty much complete off from running would help. And it really seemed to! The next week I managed to pretty much get all of my training runs done with minimal to no pain. And my 9 mile long run for the week went totally great and my leg felt almost back to 100%! It was all down hill from there unfortunately. The week of August 28th-September 3rd I attempted to do 2 runs and neither of them went well. I ended up running about 1.5 miles for both of them but I just ended up with pain in my knee, shooting down into my calf both times. And then after those two failed attempts at running I ended up limping around for the rest of the day. That’s when I decided that running was making it worse and that I needed to stop. Sad face.

And that brings us to this week, in which I’ve done absolutely no running at all. I’ve actually just been sitting around feeling sorry for myself, which definitely hasn’t helped with the whole anxiety thing…But yesterday it finally clicked in my head that just because I can’t run, it doesn’t mean that I can’t do other things, so I did a Jillian Michaels’ DVD workout that I haven’t done in forever! It was pretty tough considering that I haven’t done it in a while, and it’s not like I strength train enough anyway haha, but it definitely wasn’t as tough as I thought it was gonna be! I had to modify a few things to keep my leg happy, but I made it through without dying! I actually felt pretty strong while I was doing it. I was glad to find that I’m actually not in as bad of shape as I thought I might be. πŸ™‚

99413eb7-720a-4c26-8ff4-76c54215f590

So yeah, I felt pretty great after that! I Β woke up feeling crazy sore this morning, and while that’s slightly annoying it also makes me feel like I actually accomplished something with this workout, ya know?

Haha you’d think with how obnoxiously injury prone I am, that I’d be consistently cross training and working on strengthening my muscles in order to keep my body as injury free as possible, so that I can keep running, not take a piss ton of time off, and then drive myself completely insane because I just can’t turn my brain off when it latches onto something to worry about. *Insert world’s most dramatic eye roll here* Β But you know, I just don’t do that stuff as often as I should. It’s just not as fun as running dammit! And who wants to do something that’s not fun?!?! Not me, that’s for damn sure. But at this point I am promising myself and anyone who reads this that I’m going to dedicate the time to straight trainΒ at least twice a week. I think that’s a good goal to work on for now. πŸ™‚

Surprisingly enough though, I’ve actually been pretty good about stretching/doing gentle yoga and yoga for flexibility. That’s definitely a step in the right direction as far as rehabbing injuries and preventing new ones from happening. I was also icing my knee and calf for a while, but at this point I don’t think that’s really doing much. I’ve also been wearing a lot of compression gear and that has actually felt like it’s been helping! Luke bough me this crazy compression knee brace thingy, but my knee has felt a lot better since I’ve been wearing it! Not good enough to run on yet, but at least it’s a step in the right direction! And as far as compression socks go, well I think I might need new ones. Both pairs that I have just don’t seem as compression-y as they once were. They are still providing some compression though, so I figure that’s better than nothing for now. Haha I’m actually going to get calf sleeves instead of the whole sock, because as you can see, I cut the toes off of my compression socks because they make my toes super uncomfortable.

img_6164

So yeah, that’s where I am right now. At this point I’ve pretty much given up on the 10k that I’m registered for. That’s exactly one month from today and since I’m still not running at all I just don’t think I’m going to be able to make it happen. And I was soooo looking forward to it! This was going to be my first 10k race and it’s supposed to be a super scenic, evening race with a free glass of hard cider at the end…Oh well, there’s always next year I suppose. Haha I’m just upset that I spent $35 on a race I’m not going to do.

img_3507

As for the Longview half, well, I haven’t completely given up on that. I have however, given up on any time goals I had for it. That’s not for a little over 2 months so I feel like there’s still some hope for that one. At this point I know I can cover the distance, even on minimal training, so as long as my leg heals I’ll still be able to do it. You know how some runners have a race that they do every. single. year? That they’ve done for 5, 10, 20 years in a row? Yeah, I want the Longview half to be that race for me and I really don’t want to have to end that streak this early into it. I mean, I’ve only done it two years in a row and this is gonna be the third. Well hopefully. But like I said, if I Β can get my leg healed I should be able to do it.

Whew, alrighty then. That is all I’ve got for today. It’s been super nice outside in the mornings. In the low/high 50’s so we’re starting to get our first tastes of fall here in Kansas, and that’s just making not running even more suck-y but I can still walk my dogs! So I’m gonna go do that and then do some yoga.

Happy almost fall! πŸπŸ‚

Lament of a (once again) injured runner

I’ve been hoping that very soon I’d be able to say something to the effect of “I overcame an injury and PR’d my fastest 5k time”, or “I was sidelined for a while, but now I’m training for a half marathon”. You get the picture.

But here I am again. Hurt and unable to run.

I’ve had a string of injuries since December, but I think this one is the most frustrating because it’s not an IT band injury that can be fixed with stretching and hip strenghtening, or an overuse injury in the shin that can be helped with frequent icing and foam rolling. My clumsy ass went and fell in the shower, banged up my ribs, and pretty much all I can do is sit around and hope it heals quickly.

More shin trouble…

I had to cut my run on Tuesday short because my shin started hurting again. It’s pretty much been fine since, but I haven’t run on it since.Yesterday was a cross training day and today is a rest day.

Since it only hurt towards the end of my run on Tuesday I’m probably going to try an easy run tomorrow and I probably won’t go long on Saturday. I’m just really hoping it needed a few days of rest and I won’t have to take anymore time off…

I’m kinda wondering if my tight quads are my problem. I’ve noticed that every time this happens my quads are super tight. I see a lot more foam rolling in my future.

I also wonder if actually warming up would help. Haha don’t get me wrong, I always use the first 10 minutes of my run to slowly ease into things, but maybe that’s just not cutting it? I guess I’d better add some dynamic stretching in before I hit the pavement.

Looks like I’ve got some experimenting to do!

Do you have tight quads?

Have they ever caused shin pain?

Do you warm up before you run, or do you use the first mile or two of your run as a warm up?
