Weekly Recap: June 4th-10th, 2018

This week I was finally back to my normal schedule, which was very welcome after all of last weeks shenanigans!! It was a tough week of running though. It was all slow going this week. Lots of hot and sweaty runs. At some point not too long ago I saw someone on Twitter call running in the heat/humidity “the poor mans altitude training”. I like to think that’s true!! Summer running is no fucking joke!

Monday:

  • 2 miles
  • 30 minutes of strength training

Oh man I did not want to do anything on Monday!! I woke up late and seriously considered just not running that day. Haha but not gonna lie, after spending some time scrolling through Instagram and seeing a bunch of people I follow on there getting work done, well, I had to go get something done too. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Tuesday:

  • 5 miles
  • 40 minutes of stretching/foam rolling

Tuesday’s run was hot, slow, and sweaty. I was feeling a little sore because of the strength work I had done the day before, but that mostly worked itself out over those 5 miles. And what didn’t get worked out during my run definitely did after all of that stretch and foam rolling I did! Man did I feel great after that!!

Wednesday:

  • Rest day

I hadn’t planned on taking a rest day on Wednesday, but the night before I ate something that my stomach did not like(pumpkin seeds?? I’ve never had an issue with them before…). That happens to me every once in a while though. It has ever since I had an appendectomy when I was 13. I get debilitating stomach cramps that can last for several hours and it’s absolutely no fun. Luckily by the next day I was feeling better, but I knew that running still probably wasn’t a good idea, so, rest day.

Thursday:

  • 3 miles
  • 30 minutes of strength training

Another day of me finding hard to get going…I had wanted to run 6 miles on Thursday, but once I eventually did get out on the road I knew that wasn’t gonna happen. Still happy with the 3 I did do though. ๐Ÿ˜„ Followed that up with a little bit of work in the garden and another 30 minute strength session.

I’ve been trying to focus more on strength work since I’m running two half marathons in two days in November. I figure the stronger I am, the more resilient and less injury prone I’ll be. Plus I figure being a little stronger will help prevent me from dying during that second half. At least I sure hope so. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Friday:

  • Rest day

And this one was planned!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

What wasn’t planned was waking up at 5:30 am to clean up dog vomit. We got them a new kind of food (a brand that they’ve had before) and apparently that didn’t agree with Dean’s stomach this time around and he ended up throwing it all up at 5:30 in the morning. Exactly how I wanted to start my day. ๐Ÿ˜‘

Haha oh well, the rest of the day wasn’t so bad. We went grocery shopping which we desperately needed to do and then did a few more errand type things. Had a Honey Stinger waffle for breakfast because we’re legit that low on food and I didn’t feel like cooking the very last egg because I’m lazy. And I mean, Honey Stinger waffles are delicious, so why not start the day off with one.๐Ÿ˜‰

Saturday:

  • 8 miles

Oh man, this ran was basically just a slog through hell! So hot. So humid. No fun. But getting up early and watching the sun rise on these early morning runs is nice. So there’s that. โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ˜„

Saturday evening Luke and I went to a softball field and I pitched him some softballs so he could do some practice hitting. His company league starts up next week so he wanted to get a few hits in before that. We did this a lot last year as well, and I’m proud to say that my softball skills have greatly improved! Haha I’ve never actually played in a game, and I cant hit to save my life, but I’m actually pretty decent at pitching and catching the ball. Last year Luke spent a lot of time making me catch fly balls and ground balls haha. Anyway, that was a nice way to end the day. ๐Ÿ™‚

Sunday:ย

  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike

I almost considered running a couple of miles today, just to get my weekly mileage up to 20. But when I woke up at 7 this morning it was already 80 degrees and pretty humid. Plus I was feeling a little dehydrated and tired from yesterday’s hot 8 miler, so I opted for a little bit of time on the stationary bike, some yoga, and dyeing my hair instead (before, during, and after photos below. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). I think I made a good decision. We’re heading to Illinois next weekend for one of Luke’s brother’s High School graduation party so I plan on doing another 8 on Monday since I won’t be able to get in a long run on Saturday. So not running today was probably the best option for me. Although if it was fall or winter I probably would have done those 2 miles. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Total Weekly Mileage: 18

Much better than last week!! But I kinda figured it would be, since I didn’t have a bunch of weirdness going on this week. Next week might be a bit challenging to do what I want to get done since we’ll be going to Illinois for the weekend, but I’ve got a plan for that so we’ll see how that goes! ๐Ÿ™‚

Happy Sunday!!

StrideBox, Earlier Mornings, and My Neighbor’s Dog, Ozzy.

Another month means another StrideBox! Yay!!

img_1517

Getting a box full of running goodies once a month never gets old! I was particularly excited about the Honey Stinger Cracker N’ Nut bar that came in May’s box! Those things have quickly become one of my all time favorite snacks. ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, it would appear that spring didn’t stick around very long. It’s been feeling more and more like summer here in Kansas. So far the highs are all in the 80’s this week, and on Wednesday (I think), it’s supposed to be around 89 degrees. And it’s just gonna keep getting hotter from here. Yuck… But on the bright side, summer is thunderstorm season and I do love thunderstorms! Watching storm fronts move in is basically one of my favorite hobbies. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Haha but anyway, I’ve got a 5k on Saturday and it’s looking like the weather isn’t gonna be too great for that. According to my weather app the high is gonna be 90 degrees. Cloudy, which will help a bit, but still, 90 degrees…Well, this race is at 8 am though, so it should actually be cooler than that, but still. Plus there are a few thunderstorms in the forecast before Saturday, which means it’s gonna be crazy humid…ย  I’m beginning to think the time goal I had in mind might not happen on Saturday. I know it’s only a 5k and if it were any other weather condition (cold, rainy, icy, snowy, even windy) I could and gladly would suffer through it. But for whatever reason I’ve never been able to do that when it comes to heat and humidity. It slows me waaay down, completely drains me, and leaves me feeling pretty shitty and tired for the rest of the day. Haha I mean, I always kinda feel tired and bleh when it’s hot out, but it just gets worse if I ran that day.

Anyway, I haven’t completely given up on my goal. I just might get super lucky! But I’m also prepared to accept the fact that the weather is what it is and I just not might be able to fight through it. And at the very least there will be cows, goats, and a huge buffet at the end. Even if I am only running the 5k, I’m gonna hit that buffet HARD hahahaha. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ok, back to the point that I actually wanted to make. Since the weather has been getting warmer I’ve been having to wake up earlier. Right now I’m only having to get up at 6 am, which is only about an hour earlier than I usually do. So that’s not too horrible. But I’m able to get up, eat, drink my coffee and some water, brush my teeth, get dressed, and then get out the door just a little bit before 7 am. And that’s been working quite well, since the sun isn’t all the way up by then so it feels a little cooler. Plus the asphalt is still relatively cool since the sun hasn’t been shining on it for long at that time of day.

img_1521

View from my back porch at 6 am this morning.

So my run today was pretty pleasant, for the most part. It felt kinda cool even though it was in the high 60’s, there was a very nice breeze, and the sun was still mostly below the trees by the time I finished so I never got miserably hot. I felt pretty good during all 5 miles. The only real problem was my neighbor’s dog, Ozzy.

img_1530

You see, Ozzy is a relatively young dog, probably around Finn’s age, and my neighbor has had him for maybe 5 or 6 months (his old dog, Zadie, had to be euthanized. She was a really good dog and everyone was pretty upset about that.) Ozzy is also a red heeler (or maybe only part heeler, I don’t remember exactly), so he’s a herding dog. And obviously we have all sorts of small creatures in our backyard that look fun to chase. And for the past few weeks our chickens have really gotten his attention.

Anther thing that’s important to note is that the fence that we share with this neighbor is old and very broken haha. So he and Luke have been working on replacing it, but that’s been kind of a slow process because they both work a lot and our neighbor also goes camping a lot with his brother. That’s not been an issue until later last week though, when Ozzy figured out how to squeeze under the fence and started terrorizing my chickens.

So last Friday while I was feeding my little flock I saw a flash of white in what is usually a mostly black blur that happens in my backyard when all 3 of my dogs are running around, and of course it was Ozzy. Initially I wasn’t too worried about it. You can tell that he really wants to play with my dogs when he’s in his yard and they all like to run the fence line together. But after a few minutes of running around my yard he started to bother the chickens. Running around their coop, jumping on it, barking at them, and just kinda freaking them out in general. That pissed Finn off. Those are Finn’s chickens. He spends a lot of time trying to herd them through the coop (and sometimes he can even successfully make them move into a little group haha), but for the most part he just likes to sit near the coop and guard them. He does the same thing to the rabbit hutch. Those are his small animals and he has taken it upon himself to protect them. He’s also super protective of me (he will literally throw himself across my body and shield me from anything he thinks is a threat), the backyard, and pretty much anything he knows belongs to Luke and I. He’s a good dog, but he’s also still pretty young and dumb. He’s basically a teenager. ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_1424

So anyway, he ended up getting into a fight with Ozzy because he didn’t like Ozzy upsetting his chickens. Luckily they both stopped when I yelled at them and neither of them were hurt. So I put my dogs in my house, locked the chickens in their nesting area, and caught Ozzy and put him back in his yard. Then I covered all of the spots in the fence that he could squeeze under with rocks and bricks, hoping that would keep him out. And it did for the rest of Friday, but now he’s learned how to dig at them and move them just enough so that he can squeeze back under and he’s been in our yard at least once (but usually more than that) ever since. And like I said, I wouldn’t really mind him being in our yard, if he didn’t cause problems

So back to what happened today. I got up at 6, let Finn and Dean out (Luke was still asleep at this point and Lily will refuse to leave the bedroom if he’s still in bed. Haha she’s also super protective like Finn is. She’s just smarter and more mature about it. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ), then let the chickens out into the outside area of their coop and fed them. About half an hour later I found Ozzy in the yard, so I got him out, readjusted the rocks and bricks on the fence, and went out for my run. When I was about 3 miles in I ran past my house and saw he was back in my yard so I had to stop, repeat the whole process again, and then left to do the last two miles of my run.

img_1523

Ozzy and Dean watching me take off for the last portion of my run this morning.

Finished my remaining 2 miles, and of course I found Ozzy back in the yard again. And this time he was trying to dig under the coop to get to my chickens! Yeah, obviously I’m not about to let that happen. I’m already kind of irritated that he’s been upsetting them. So went through the whole process of catching him again, put more stuff along the fence in an attempt to keep him out, and then I lined the outside of the chicken coop with rocks and bricks. So if he does get in my yard and tries to dig underneath the coop again it should at least slow him down. Or at least that’s what I’m hoping. Haha the chickens did enjoy this though. The rocks and bricks were covered in all sorts of bugs and worms, so they got to have themselves a nice little bug buffet this morning. They seemed to enjoy chasing and chasing bugs to their little hearts’ content. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_1529

And of course there’s Finn and his long ass tongue on the other side of the coop keeping an eye on them haha. If you look at the top of the photo you can also see Ozzy claw marks on the wood of the coop. He’s scratched up the other side of the coop really bad… ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

So far he hasn’t gotten back into our yard since I caught him for the third time today, so that’s good. But here in a little bit Luke and I are going to go bury some rocks and bricks along the fence line in hopes that will keep Ozzy out of our yard until they can finish replacing that fence. Hopefully then he wont be able to get into our yard anymore and our chickens will be safe. At least from him haha. Last summer a raccoon took up residence under our shed. I haven’t seen him since last fall though so I’m hoping he’s gone for good. I’m pretty sure all of the feral cats are too afraid of my dogs to even attempt to get into my back yard (raise you’re hand if you know what tends to happen to feral cats on a farm! Yeah, I kinda miss having that option. Feral cats are nothing but a problem…). There are also a couple of foxes that live in my neighborhood. One lives under someone else’s shed a few blocks down, as a matter of fact! There’s not much we can do about them though, except hope that all of the dogs keep them away. And there are a lot of dogs in all of the yards surrounding our house haha.

img_9421-1

But of course my dogs are the best, and I’m definitely not biased at all about that. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย

Well this post ended up being longer than I thought it was gonna be! Haha it happens though. Sometimes I just get going and I can’t stop! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyway, I’ll definitely be posting about what goes down with my 5k on Saturday! Hopefully it doesn’t end up being as bad as I think it might be.

I hope your Tuesday was terrific! (That was super lame, I know.)

Will (and did) Run For Pizza, Tomatoes, Zucchini, and Green Beans, Oh My! And One More Week Until Running With The Cows! ๐Ÿฎ

Ya know, I don’t think that title is long enough. I feel like I could have done a lot better. I mean, why not just write the whole blog post in the title? Problem solved! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Haha obviously coming up with catchy titles is not my strong suit, but whatever, I make it work. I think…

Anyway, Luke and I have officially got our garden started! Last year we had to rent a tiller because ours had broken and neither of us knew how to fix it and we kinda didn’t want to mess with it anyway. But yesterday we bought a new one because it was on sale at Tractor Supply, and because why not? ๐Ÿ˜‰ So once we had that we were pretty much set on everything else, so we went to a local farm to get our plants.

I think the very first year that we lived in this house we started most of our plants from seeds, but that’s a lot of extra work haha! Plus I really like this farm we get ours from. Everything there is organic, non GMO, and the plants always look really good and do well, so that’s where we’ve been getting and will probably continue getting our plants. This year we ended up getting 16 tomato plants (8 “Jet Star” plants and 6 cherry tomato plants), 4 zucchini plants, 4 banana pepper plants, 4 watermelon plants, 2 green bean plants, another strawberry plant, 1 black berry bush, 1 raspberry bush, and a goji berry bush. We also wanted a few cucumber plants but they didn’t have any so we’ll have to get those somewhere else and hopefully really soon!

img_1461

So now that we were armed with our new tiller and most of the plants that we wanted, Luke recruited his brother and his whole crew to come “help” us put in the plants. Originally he just wanted him there because Luke wanted to build some structures for all of the vine plants, but we didn’t end up getting to that last night. We did, however, get some tilling done and the tomatoes, peppers, and berry bushes planted! I even had 3 kids (my brother-in-law’s girlfriend’s kids and my next door neighbor) fighting over who got to dig the next hole for me haha. That was pretty funny but it also kinda made the whole process take a little longer. Oh well, at least they had fun and we got some of our plants into the ground.

img_1468-1

During all of those shenanigans Luke had ordered pizza, and while I was eating I realized I was wearing a very fitting shirt haha! And I mean, it is very true, I will definitely run for pizza! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Actually, what I really like to do is have pizza for dinner the night before my long run, because it always seems like when I do my long runs go soo much better haha. Still not sure if that’s just a coincidence or not, buy hey, I’ll gladly say its true if it means I get to eat more pizza. ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ˜‰ And at that point I was thinking that ended up working out really well for me, because I’d planned on doing a long run today.

img_1471

That didn’t exactly end up happening though. When I woke up this morning my calves were crazy sore. Not sure how I managed that one, but they were. Plus I was feeling kinda tired. I guess that’s not very surprising considering all of our gardening adventures last night. But I told myself I was gonna try for 8 miles anyway. And foolishly thought to myself that hey, maybe it’ll go really well and I can do 10. I did not do 10…

I felt alright during the first 3 ish miles, but by the time I got to 5 I was just absolutely done. The sun was all the way up at that point and I had started to heat up even more than I already was which sucks. Being hot is like, my least favorite thing ever, and it kinda turns me into a huge baby. But I stuck it out through another mile and a half before I just called it quits. Ooooh man it was really hard. But I’m happy with the 6.5 miles I got done. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_1480

Fueled by Honey Stinger.๐Ÿ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿซ Feet kept happy by Zensah. ๐Ÿงฆ๐Ÿ‰

Honestly I’m thinking it’s not a bad thing that I didn’t run 10 miles today. My next 5k is next Saturday and obviously I want to good and have fresh legs for that! And I mean, I’m pretty freaking stoked for this race! I did it once before in 2016 and it was so much fun! There were goats and a baby cow at the start/finish line, the course was pretty, rural, and full of cows, and there was a HUGE buffet at the end. Seriously, there was SO. MUCH. FOOD. It’s definitely my kind of race! And maybe one day I’ll end up running the half instead of the 5k haha. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Originally I was doing a 5k specific training plan for this race, but that kinda went to the wayside once I made the potentially bad decision to run two half marathons in two days. Haha I’m running the Longview half on November 10th and on November 11th my dad, brother, and I are going to do the Gobbler Grind half marathon so that should be interesting. But the second my dad signed us up for the Gobbler Grind I pretty much stopped everything I was doing and started focusing on milesย miles miles. I really need to start getting more in now that I’m attempting the crazy stunt, so I’ve been focusing on upping my mileage and have pretty much stopped doing speed work. Although I have thrown in a few short and fast sessions in over the last few weeks, just for fun. ๐Ÿ™‚

But anyway, I haven’t completely given up on the time goal I had for Running With the Cows though. Depending what kind of weather we get on race day (have I mentioned how big of a baby I am when it comes to hot/sunny weather? ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) and how I’m feeling next Saturday, I think I might actually be able to do pretty well! I mean, my dad and I crushed it at the Whiskey 5k we did together in March and I kinda want to see if I can do this race faster. But I guess I’ll just have to wait and see what race day brings! I’m pretty excited for it! But I’m even more excited about the buffet at the end. I’m definitely gonna go all out on that. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰

Okey dokey then! I just kinda wanted to give a little update on what I’ve been up to and to say how stoked I am about Running With The Cows next week! So that is all for today!

Happy Saturday from me and this chubby bunny!

Weekly Recap: April 23rd-29th, 2018

Holy cow we’re already coming up on the end of April! It seems to me like January and February went by super slow, but now the months are starting to go by faster. Haha our perception of time is weird. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyway, this week was hard. I kinda figured it would be though, at this point I’m kinda upping my mileage and trying to build a decent base for my upcoming half marathon training cycle. Kinda don’t even want to think about that right now though, because I’m thinking I might have to do a few back to back long run days which might not be very pleasant haha. But gotta get myself ready for my back to back half marathons in November! And I’ve also got another 5k coming up on May 12th. I’m feeling pretty good about that race though! Oh and in July Luke and I are going to be going to Branson, MO on another vacation with a bunch of family members. All of that on top of everything else I’ve got going on (caring for my chickens, hanging out with the neighbor kids that just show up at my house now, the garden, the dogs obviously, everyday life, blogging, etc…) no wonder it seems like time is starting to speed up!

Okey Dokey then, lets get this week recapped!!

Monday:

  • 3 miles with a few strides at the end
  • 20 minutes of strength work

I was feeling motivated AF on Monday. That’s what all you crazy kids are saying now a-days right? AF? I don’t understand pop culture anymore! Send help!! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰ Haha for real though, I was ready to get shit done on Monday! Although I really didn’t have much to get done that day. On the scheduled for me was 3 easy miles, which I did followed by a few strides because I think those are pretty fun! Then did some strength training. It wasn’t a long session but it was a hard one haha. I ended up regretting that for pretty much the rest of the week…

img_1212

Tuesday:ย

  • 2 miles

Hahahahaha I totally faked my way through the workout I was supposed to do on Tuesday. So much for being motivated AF, right? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Ugh, it was just so sunny and warm out. Gross… That’s right ladies and gentlemen, it’s that time of year again! I’m not going to stop bitching about the weather until it starts getting cold again. So buckle up, because complaining about being hot and miserable is my favorite summer pass time. Anyway, at least I got the miles in on Tuesday.

img_1236-1

Wednesday:ย

  • 6 miles

Ah hump day. Some stuff happened on this Wednesday.

So first off, I woke up tired and sore from that strength workout that I did on Monday. Fun times, but I knew it was coming haha. Ugh I really didn’t want to run on Wednesday, but the only thing that got me out the door was knowing that getting in my miles now is only going to make this year’s round of half marathon training that much easier. Plus my dad and brother ran 6 miles last night, and that was my plan for Wednesday anyway, so obviously I had to do it. I mean, I couldn’t let them beat me. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Also woke up with this song stuck in my head;

That’s not super relevant, it’s just a good song and I wanted to share it with you. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Oh and we also traded in our piece of shit SUV for a truck. Haha I talk about that here if you’re interested. But now we have a vehicle that’s not completely falling apart and that actually has heat! If you read about our adventures traveling to Colorado on Thanksgiving or to Illinois for Easter, then you might recall me saying that we spent a crazy amount of time freezing our butts off because the SUV’s heater didn’t work. But that’s not a problem anymore! ๐Ÿ™‚

img_1246

Thursday:

  • 4 miles

My legs were still feeling sore and tired on Thursday. Still got my run done in the morning though! And good thing I did too, because Luke ended up leaving work early on Thursday and once he got home we drove to Illinois because he wanted to show off his truck to his dad haha. But since Luke had to work on Saturday we didn’t end up staying in Illinois for very long.

img_1275-1

Friday:

  • Rest Day

So our one day in Illinois ended up coinciding with my rest day really well haha!

On Thursday I stayed the night at Luke’s dad’s house, then on Friday they went to Luke’s grandparents’ house to fish, but before they did that they dropped me off at my grandma’s house. So I spent most of Friday hanging out with her, our dogs, and my uncle. Then around 4 pm we packed up the truck and drove back home.

img_1320

Saturday:

  • 10 miles

Oh man, I wasn’t entirely sure I was gonna make it through this weeks long run! Friday may have been a rest day, but spending 5 hours in a truck isn’t exactly relaxing. Plus I don’t likes drinking a lot on long car rides because I don’t like having to stop to pee haha. But my run actually ended up going alright! It was hot, slow, and kinda not so fun but I got it done without too many issues! ๐Ÿ™‚ Plus when we got home on Friday night my Honey Stinger and Nuun orders where waiting for my on the front porch, so I got to try out a few new things during my run on Saturday.

After my long run I spent a lot of time doing nothing haha. But that evening Luke and I ended up going bowling with my brother-in-law and his girlfriend. That was fun, but I was pretty tired haha.

Sunday:

  • rest day

Oh boy was I ready for this rest day!! After our short trip to Illinois, my long run, and then our bowling adventure I’m pretty darn worn out!! My legs are feeling surprisingly good though. They’re a bit tired, but not as sore as I thought they were going to be. Anyway, since I didn’t have to run I took some time to re-dye my hair. It’s a super long process so it’s hard to do it on days when I run. But I got it taken care of today. ๐Ÿ™‚

Total Weekly Mileage: 25.33ย

This week was a total success!! Hit my weekly mileage goal, did all of the runs that I wanted to do, traveled to Illinois and hung out with some family, went out and had some fun. It was a good week all around. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m excited to see what I can make happen next week!

Thursday Things

Some stuff has happened this week! Haha actually, Luke and I have had quite a bit of stuff going on. So has my dad! He’s been absolutely killing it with all the running he’s been doing! I hope my brother has been too, since he’s gonna be running the Gobbler Grind half marathon with us in November as well, but he doesn’t like to text much haha.

Ok, I need to figure out where I want to start, because I really do have a lot to talk about today…Lets kick off this post with some exciting news about our current transportation situation!

img_1255

Yesterday Luke traded in our piece of shit 2005 (I think?) Chevy Equinox for a 2016 Ram 1500. Holy cow that is one nice truck!! And its a huge improvement over what we were driving around in before! We actually have heat now!! You might recall that our journey to Colorado for Thanksgiving was awful because the SUV’s heater didn’t work. Haha and it was basically falling apart on on, so an upgrade was necessary. ๐Ÿ™‚ Plus Luke is super duper happy because he finally has his truck. He’s wanted on FOREVER and is pretty stoked that he has one now.

img_1256

This summer we’re going to be going on another family vacation with Luke’s mom, siblings, a few aunts, his grandma, etc. We’re going to be going to Branson, Mo to spend a week together, and since it’s only 4 hours away from us Luke and I will be driving there. But it’s gonna be such a nice trip in the new truck!

Alrighty, lets get back to my dad and half marathon training! He’s been running A LOT!! On Thursday’s he’s been going to a group run thing that a local running store puts on which is awesome, and last weekend he did a 12 mile long run! I told him to be careful, but at this rate he’s already ready to run a half marathon!

On Tuesday he and my brother did a 6 mile run. My plan for yesterday was to do a 6 miler and I was about 3 seconds away from skipping it, but since my training partners went out and did it the day before I obviously had to do it too. I am the most experienced runner in this family and I’m not about to let the two newbies beat me!! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Haha we might be separated by 600 miles, but we’re still motivating each other to get shit done!

img_1246

If it wasn’t for my dad and brother running 6 miles the day before, I wouldn’t have done this run on Wednesday.

So I’m super stoked that my dad is 100% dedicated himself to this half marathon thing and I hope he keeps running even after we cross that finish line!

As for me, well, running is going pretty good. I’m currently going through a base building thing since I spent so much of the winter fucking around, hurt, and sick (haha I’m always those two things..). And that’s all fine and good until I realized that I didn’t want to completely die during the first few weeks of actual half marathon training, so I’m just gonna completely die now and then hopefully be in a lot better shape in July when my training plan starts. ๐Ÿ˜‰ It’s actually not that bad, I’m just really tired. But I’ve been through this before and I know in a few weeks I’ll feel good and actually like running again. Haha but for now I’m not to thrilled about lacing up my running shoes every morning. Especially not this morning. Ugh, I just wanted to sleep in and then spend the day doing absolutely nothing. I got it done though!

Ok, so lets talk a little bit about my chickens now, because I absolutely love them and can’t wait for fresh eggs!!

They have adjusted to life in their coop very well! Around 6:45-7 ish in the morning either Luke or I run out there, let them out of their nesting box, and feed them. Haha they’re so funny. They get so excited when they hear you coming. They know that people mean food, and obviously they like their food! Then I go out there a few times a day to check on them and give them treats. So far their favorite thing is bananas! They go crazy over bananas!! So at 8 pm when we lock them up again, if they aren’t already in their nesting area (which a lot of the time they are) I can just get them up there with a banana. ๐Ÿ™‚

They seem like very happy chickens and happy chickens lay the tastiest eggs!!

So one of Luke’s co-workers has a bee hive in his vegetable garden and harvests their honey, so eventually we’re gonna trade him some eggs for some honey. And one of our neighbors has a bunch of fruit trees and grows a garden too, so we’re gonna trade him eggs for some of his stuff too. I just think that’s the best thing ever! Everyone benefits from situations like this and its awesome! Plus growing/producing your own food is just so freaking rewarding! I firmly believe that everyone should growย something.ย Even if it is just a few herbs in your window. ๐Ÿ™‚

So, Luke decided he needed to drive to STL to show off his truck to his dad, so he ended up leaving work early and we started making our way to his dads house. We’re currently still driving (but we’re almost there!), it’s been a good trip! This truck is damn comfortable!

We won’t be gone long though. We’re literally driving back home tomorrow. Haha like I said, Luke just wants to show off the truck.

Alrighty then! That’s all for today!

Happy Friday eve!!

I’ve Potentially Made A Bad Decision?

Or maybe a really good one? I’m not entirely sure yet. Something good has already come of it so far so that’s good, at least. But we’ll get to all of that in a second! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyway, kicked off my week with a little bit of 5k action! It wasn’t a particularly exciting run, but it was a good one. Plus my April StrideBox was waiting for me in my mailbox by the time I was done! Yay!! Always love getting my box full of exciting running goodies. So yeah, my week is off to a pretty great start so far. ๐Ÿ™‚

My hand is feeling a lot better today too! It’s still a little sore and awkward but I can actually use it mostly normally now. My little puncture wound is healing really well too. It’s not quite closed up yet, but it’s definitely getting there. Haha I do not recommend getting bit by a dog. It’s no fun and just might put your hand out of commission for several days. But luckily it hasn’t actually been too big of an issue.

Ok, so onto my potentially bad decision then I guess. So the other day I texted my dad and asked him if he’d want to do another running thing with me. A half marathon as a matter of fact! The Gobbler Grind half marathon that is held here in Kansas. November! My dad does a lot of hiking and has been doing some running ever since we did the Whiskey run 5k together in March. So I think he’ll be able to do it, no problem. Plus the cut off time for this particular half is 4 hours. That’s about a 14 minuter per mile pace. I think that’s totally doable for him. The real question is, will it be doable for me?

You see, the problem is the Gobbler Grind marathon/half marathon/5k (but obviously we want to do the half haha) is held the second Sunday of November every year. And the Longview half marathon is held the second Saturday of November every year. And obviously I want to to the Longview half every year! I’ve talked about all of those reasons on here before, but I also really want to do the Gobbler Grind half marathon. That’s actually why I’ve recruited my dad to do the Gobbler Grind with me! I figure I’ll be more likely to make it through another half marathon after doing one the day before if I have someone there with me! Specifically, someone who has no time goal and who just wants to make it through there first. So it’ll be beneficial for both of us. ๐Ÿ™‚

img_0237

I’m already registered for the Longview Half and there’s no way I’m skipping out on my newly established November tradition!

Now the Gobbler Grind isn’t a for sure thing yet. My dad works for a trucking company and they’re always crazy busy in November because of everyone shipping Christmas stuff, and at this point my dad is pretty much running two different trucking terminals and he and his boss are working on opening a third. Plus my dad lives in Colorado so it’s an 11 hour drive just for him to get her. But he seems like he really wants to do it and he said he’s gonna try to make it happen. Last night he went to a local specialty running store and had someone help him try on a bunch of shoes, and he finally decided on a pair of Hoka’s. He also got himself one of those fancy r8 rollers, some Honey Stinger waffles (he really likes the lemon flavored ones ๐Ÿ˜‰ ), and a pair of compression socks. So he’s getting all of the tools he needs and plans on doing a beginner’s half marathon training plan!

Not gonna lie, I’m pretty freaking excited that I’ve managed to convert my dad into a runner! I think that’s so awesome! Plus now I’ve finally got someone who actually wants to do races with me!! That’s pretty sweet!

Now I’ve just got to play a fun little guessing game called “can Ashley run two half marathons in two days?” Obviously I’ve never done anything like that before but I think it’s doable. Especially since the Gobbler Grind course looks a little bit easier than Longview’s. I haven’t run it before, but part of it is on a paved trail that I used to run on back when I lived in an apartment in Overland Park, KS. I know the second of trail that the course follows like the back of my hand and I also know that it’s relatively flat. Especially compared to all of Longview’s rolling hills. So that’s something! Plus the cutoff time for the Gobbler Grind is an hour more than Longview’s so that should help too haha.

img_0920

Here’s Longview’s elevation map according to my Garmin. As you can see, its a slightly up hill course, with plenty of hills, and one big ass hill that is the entirety of mile two. I am pretty sure there is not one flat stretch of road on this whole course haha. Fun fun fun!!

It’s a really good thing I plan on really working on upping my mileage this spring/summer! I’m gonna need it! I’m also probably going to have to really up my recovery game too, especially after I finish the Longview half for the 4th time in a row! Haha I am pretty stoked about that! My November tradition is going strong! ๐Ÿ™‚

img_0921

Mile 11 of the Longview half; 2015, 2016, and 2017. My goal for this year is to not look like I did last year at mile 11 hahaha.

Whew, the thought of running two half running two half marathons in two days is absolutely terrifying! But all the more reason to do it, right? I mean, I didn’t become a runner not to do hard things! But like I said, it’s still not a for sure thing yet. Just a crazy plan that both my dad and I want to make happen and are both going to be working toward.

Alrighty then! Today I’ll leave you with the new single from my new favorite band. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I hope everyone has a great week!

Your friend who is really good and making (potentially) really bad decisions,

~Ashley

Thursday Things

Ah Thursday. My my favorite day to do a bunch of random ramblings. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So I guess we should get some running talk out of they way. Or well, kinda lack there of. I have been suffering from a bit of a stomach thing. I’m not sure what or why, and I’ll spare you all of the gory details, but it’s kinda sucked haha. On Monday I tried to run but only made it a mile before I had to call it quits. So on Tuesday I took the day off, rested, and ate a lot of potatoes and white rice. Fun times. I was feeling a little bit better on Wednesday and got out and ran, but only 2 miles. That’s definitely better than nothing though! Today I just wasn’t feeling it. I could have run. Probably should have run. But I ended up doing 30 minutes of yoga instead.

img_0613

Not sure what caused my stomach troubles. I haven’t really been eating anything different, new, or weird. I guess I just got some kinda bug or something. Whatever. I seem to be getting better and that’s all that matters. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have made one slight adjustment to my diet though. I’ve been making myself oatmeal for breakfast for about the last week now! That’s kind of a big deal for me. I’m not all that big into making myself a decent meal for breakfast. That just takes extra effort that I don’t feel like putting into my food first thing in the morning. But breakfast is the most important meal of the day, as they say. So I figure I should be eating a little something more than just a piece of fruit, a cheese stick, a Honey Stinger waffle, or even worse, just coffee. Eating a bowl of oatmeal every morning seems to be doing me quite a bit of good though! I’m not absolutely starving about halfway through the morning and usually just need a small snack a few hours before lunch. So actually taking the time to make a decent breakfast seems to be a good habit for me to be in.

img_0625

Yay oatmeal!

My oatmeal for breakfast habit might be a little difficult to keep up with this weekend though. On Saturday night Luke and I are going to be driving to St. Louis, so he can spend Easter with his dad, step mom, and two of his brothers. And I’ll get to spend at my grandma’s house with my mom, brother, and uncle. So my grandma is going to have a pretty full house for Easter. I’m sure that’ll make her really happy! ๐Ÿ™‚ It’ll be fun for all of us though. I believe on Monday Luke plans on taking his brothers, my brother, and obviously myself to the St. Louis zoo! I sure hope we get to do that! the St. Louis zoo is so much fun!! I’m pretty sure it’s one of the best zoos in the country (at the very least it’s about 100 times better than the Kansas City zoo). And if you’re willing to walk a little bit there are plenty of places to park for free in Forest Park, so you don’t have to pay for parking and entry to the zoo is free. Pretty awesome. ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, not sure what my family will be doing for Easter. We used to go to Church every Easter (and every Sunday really), but I’m not sure that’s what we will be doing. But I’m sure my grandma and Uncle will make a bunch of yummy food! You can always count on them to cook on holidays! I wonder if my grandma will have her Easter tree out (or even if she still has it). Did you guys have an Easter tree? Haha I’ve just recently learned that’s something that not everyone does! Apparently it’s a German tradition, which does make a lot of sense. My mom’s side of my family is super German. My late grandpa’s parents immigrated here before he was born. Pretty neat! So I’ve grown up doing a lot of German things without even really knowing it. That also explains why my family is of the Lutheran denomination haha. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So here’s a photo of me (I’m the one standing up) and my sisters (yes they’re twins) on Easter in 1997. So that would be the year before my brother was born. It’s not a great photo, but you can kinda see our Easter tree on the table. ๐Ÿ˜‰

img_0627-1

Here’s a better photo of one from Google. ๐Ÿ™‚

A few people in my neighborhood have decorated trees and bushes in there front yards for Easter, so that’s pretty neat!

Anyway,ย  it’s been a super muddy mess outside because it’s been pretty rainy and wet out. My backyard is basically a giant mud pit and Dean and Finn are both super gross. They’re gonna have to be bathed before we got to St. Louis on Saturday. They’re not gonna be happy about that, because after they’re clean, the won’t be able to go back outside and that’s where they both prefer to be pretty much all day, every day.

img_0628

So. Much. Mud…

So, remember almost 2 weeks ago when I ordered a pair of running tights from Oiselle? The ones with all of the pockets that I was so super excited about?? Yeah, they still haven’t gotten here yet…

img_0429-1

So. Many. Pockets!!

It’s the UPS’s fault. Every time I order something online and it ships via the UPS it always ends up getting delayed. Never for this long before though… So on Tuesday I emailed Oiselle to if they knew anything about the situation with my order. All they could tell me was that it’s delayed with the carrier (but I’m hoping they’ve contacted the UPS and they’re working on getting my package to me), but they were kind enough to refund me the $8 I paid for 3 day shipping. I really appreciate how quickly Oiselle got back to me and that they were kind enough to refund my shipping charge. That was great! This morning I reported it to the UPS as a lost package, so hopefully they’ll be able to find it and finally get it to me. I was so excited about all of those pockets and I really want to put them to use!!!

img_0631

So semi related, but when my feet were feeling a little bit sore last week I realized that the only compression gear I have for my feet are holiday themed (Thanksgiving and Christmas to be exact). Really that’s not a big deal and obviously that’s not gonna stop me from wearing them when I need them, but I still thought that was boring, so I spent some time waiting for Zensah’s watermelon socks to be restocked and yesterday they finally were, so I bought myself a pair! ๐Ÿ™‚ Luckily those are coming through the USPS so at least I know they’ll get here when they’re supposed to and I wont have to wait who know’s how long for them to get here.

Anyway, I’m thinking that’s all I’ve got for today!

Happy Thursday!

~Ashley
