January 12th, 2018

This morning I woke up tired, sore, and unmotivated to do pretty much anything. Initially I was super frustrated with myself. I mean, it wasn’t all that long ago when I could do an easy 4 miler like I did yesterday, and wake up feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to take on the day and tackle another run. But I took a minute to take a step back and really look at what’s going on. I did kind of do a lot yesterday! I braved the elements and did an almost 4 mile run (it was 3.89, but that’s freaking close enough hahaha) with ice under my feet and pretty harsh wind gusts which where sometimes at my back and sometimes at my face. It was slow going (it was more slipping, sliding, walking over really bad patches of ice, and stopping for cars), hard work, and most importantly, a lot of fun!

And then later in the day I did a 30 minute yoga sequence and spend 30 minutes on my stationary bike (and it wasn’t 30 minutes of me just fucking around on the bike like I sometimes do, I was actually putting in some work hahaha! πŸ˜‰ ). And that was all on top of me being sick last week, and being crazy busy with Christmas stuff the week before that, so no freaking wonder I don’t feel like doing anything today!

Sure maybe at one point I could have done a hard workout after everything I did yesterday. And yes, compared to what some people can do/are currently doing, I did hardly anything yesterday. But comparing myself to other people or to what I could do at another point and time is literally going to get me nowhere. It doesn’t getΒ anyoneΒ anywhere.

So, this is where I’m at right now and that’s ok. I’ve got some really big goals I want to accomplish and I’m going to have to work really hard to make them happen. But right now I need to focus on even getting to the point of being able to work towards them. I can’t just jump right back into what I was doing several months ago and think that will work. It won’t. More likely than not I’ll just end up burnt out or hurt, and I’m already super injury prone haha. I need to work back up to where I was and then build from there. And if that means having to skip out on a run here or there to rest, then so be it. For me today, not running is a win. πŸ™‚

I know this post is kinda just one big “note to self” thing. But if you take anything away from it, let it be the fact that it’s ok to be where you’re at right now and to work with that instead of comparing yourself to someone else or to your past self (something that I’m super guilty of), and then trying to do too much, or getting frustrated and giving up on whatever your goal happens to be. You’ve got this. I believe in you. Which is also a good “note to self”. πŸ™‚

I hope you have a fantastic Friday!!

Ice Ice Baby

Yesterday the high was 51 degrees and my backyard was a huge, gross, muddy mess. Which means my dogs turned into nasty mud monsters, and were literally covered head to toe in mud. Fun times. πŸ˜‰

img_8851.jpg

You can’t really tell in the photo, but trust me Finn (pictured here) and Dean are so bad that they’ve been sleeping in the computer room to keep mud out of our bedroom. Lily doesn’t spend as much time outside as them, so she’s not really that bad. πŸ™‚

This morning when I woke up, it was pouring down rain, which gradually turned into snow/ice. Ah the joy’s of living in the Midwest haha. But on the bright side, all of the mud in my backyard is frozen, so at least that’s something.

Now, I know it sounds like I’m complaining but I’m kinda not hahaha. Well, I am complaining about the mud, but that’s beside the point. πŸ˜‰ But if you’ve been following me for a while now you probably know that I’m actually a big fan of winter weather. But the problem is ice tends to be a little more dangerous than snow. So with that in mind I tried to get out and get a run done before the rain really turned into ice and before the roads started to freeze over. I was not successful haha.

img_8869

I also realized that most of my winter running gear is super dark. That’s not really a big deal if it’s sunny and clear out, but it was super grey and rainy/icy today. So I had to wear my blaze orange hat over my winter hat. Haha I’m probablyΒ  the coolest runner you”ll see today. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, after I got geared up I spent 10 minutes on my stationary bike just to warm up a little bit, got out the door and immediately slipped on the ice on my front porch. That was when I knew I was in for an interesting run! If you can really call it a run that is! I spent most of my time slipping and sliding all over the place, walking over really icy spots, and stopping for cars. Haha it was kinda fun though, battling the ice and eventually the crazy gusts of wind. AlthoughΒ  thanks to the wind a basketball hoop that’s at the end of a street and therefore right next to the road almost fell right on top of me. That could have been bad. Luckily I got out of the way in time. πŸ™‚ And the whole time I was out there the temperture kept dropping and the road just got worse and worse, so by the time I made it to my driveway I called it good and quit, instead of making a point to hit exactly 4 miles like I usually would. Haha but I mean, that’s close enough. πŸ˜‰

img_8868

After my run I warmed up with some coffee, quickly cleaned my bathroom, and then warmed up even more with a nice, hot shower. I swear nothing beats a really hot shower after a cold, wet run. It felt amazing. πŸ™‚ After that I enjoyed a delicious bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, and now here we are! Feeling like a total bad ass for braving the ice, cold, and wind. Super cozy in a pair of fuzzy socks and my Longview Half hoodie. And just feeling all together awesome. Today is a good day. πŸ™‚

If you’re experiencing ice/snow/crazy winter weather, have fun but stay safe out there! Ice is no joke!!

Happy Thursday!

Weekly Recap: January 1st-7th, 2018

Welp, the new year has kinda gotten off to a rough start for me. I’ve been sick (again πŸ˜‘) and unable to do much running. Mostly because we’ve been stuck in single/negative temperatures and attempting to run in that with a sore throat is pretty freaking miserable. So I’ve mostly been focusing on rest this week, which is probably exactly what I need after all of the craziness, running around, alcohol, and super late nights that our Christmas adventures brought last week. But resting has been kinda nice. Luke took most of this week off from work, so we’ve been hanging out, playing video games, and cooking a few things from Run Fast Eat Slow. So that’s been fun!

Not gonna lie, watching everyone else getting to work on their goals for the new year has been a little bit torturous. I’ve got big goals that I want to start working on too! πŸ˜‚ But first I gotta get over this illness…

Monday (New Year’s Day):

  • 2 miles

I attempted to get a decent run in on Monday. But like I said, the super cold temps were not mixing well with my sore throat, so I had to call it at 2 miles. Haha I probably shouldn’t have even done that, but oh well. πŸ˜‰

img_8712

Tuesday:

  • Β Rest Day

Yeah, I woke up feeling even worse on Tuesday. Basically conferming the fact that I should have not run on Monday. But I mean, I had to start off 2018 with a run! πŸ˜‰ Anyway, Luke and I spent most of Tuesday at home, doing a whole lot of nothing, which is probably what I needed. I also spent a lot of time drinking apple cider vinegar and raw honey in warm water, because it’s good for colds/sore throats.

img_8723

Wednesday:Β

  • Walked around the dog park

Started to feel a little bit better on Wednesday! Plus it was a little bit warmer (and by that I mean it was in the 20’s πŸ˜‰ ), so we took the dogs to the park so they could run around a little bit. And then for dinner we made the herb chicken, and miso soup from Run Fast Eat Slow! Haha I had to make a few changes to the soup; I couldn’t find any red miso at the store so I used white, and I used some nori sheets I had instead of having to buy wakame. It still ended up tasting really good though! I added some soba noodles and it ended up being the perfect dinner on a cold winter’s night. Oh and the chicken turned out really well too!! I just don’t have a photo of it. πŸ˜‰

img_8738-1

Thursday:

  • Rest Day

My throat was still sore on Thursday, but I was starting to feel like I was finally starting to get well again. I wonder if my delicious soup had something to do with that? πŸ˜‰ I didn’t want to push it though, so no running. But I did make some of the superhero muffins from Run Fast Eat Slow. Those turned out really well!!!

Friday:

  • 3 miles

Was feeling much better by Friday, so I decided to get a nice 3 miler done. It was about 18 degrees out and by the end of it my throat was starting to hurt a little bit again. But when I was about a mile in some guy wearing a veteran hat, while walking a Chihuahua that was wearing a pink sweater called me tough. So I mean, that was great. πŸ™‚

img_8759

Saturday:

  • Easy peasy 20 minute run (1.5 miles)
  • 10 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 20 minutes of yoga

Still sniffling and sneezing on Saturday, but as a whole I was feeling a lot better! Haha tired, but better. πŸ™‚ Almost didn’t run though. Like I said, I was tired, and it was still pretty cold out and I was worried about my throat starting to hurt again…But when I checked the weather I saw that we were supposed to get some freezing rain on Sunday, so I decided I needed to get a short run in since I probably wouldn’t be able to the next day. I’m glad I did it. πŸ™‚

img_8777

Sunday:

  • Rest Day

Basically just trying to get back into my usual scheduled, which means taking Sunday as a rest day. πŸ™‚ The freezing rain actually just turned out to be a really really cold rain, so the roads weren’t at all bad like I was worried they’d end up being. So I ended up taking all of the dogs for walks in the rain. Haha not like they mind! Probably not the best decision for me, since I’m attempting to get over this cold, but I love me some rainy weather!! πŸ™‚

So yeah, it’s definitely been an interesting week haha. Glad I’m finallly feeling better and I’m super excited to really get started on my goals for this month and this year!

I hope everyone had a good week!

Weekly Recap: April 10th-16th, 2017

Monday:

  • Rest Day

Tuesday:

  • Intervals
  • 30 minutes of yoga

Ugh the run was no fun on Tuesday, but the yoga I did afterwards totally made up for it. πŸ™‚

img_2773

Wednesday:

  • 25 minutes on the stationary bike

Well that’s a little bit sad for a cross training day haha. I probably should have spent a little more time on my stationary bike or at least done some yoga or something. But I didn’t so oh well. πŸ˜‰

Thursday:

  • 1.5 miles
  • 30 minutes of yoga
  • 5 minutes of foam rolling

Thursday’s run was actually supposed to be more around 5 miles, so obviously that didn’t exactly go as planned. I was just feeling dehydrated, and tired, and my legs were super tight, so I cut the run super short and did a bunch of yoga and water drinking instead. πŸ™‚

Friday:

  • rest day

Well, sort of. Luke and I spent most of Friday running around all over the place. We had to take Finn to the vet, go to the DMV, go grocery shopping, and take all of the dogs to the park. It was a bit chaotic, but it ended up being a pretty fun day. I also got a super spiffy new shirt, so that totally made all of the chaos worth it. πŸ˜‰

img_2890

Saturday:

  • 3.51 miles
  • 1 hour on the stationary bike

So I’m not entirely sure what possessed me to do an hour on the stationary after doing an interval workout in the morning and the night before a long run, but I totally did and it actually ended up working out just fine! I even ended up sleeping pretty well and I woke up feeling great this morning!

img_2904

Sunday:

  • 9 miles
  • 45 minutes of yoga

Happy Easter everyone! 🐣🐰 Started my day out with 9 a super slow, super humid miles. Oh man, it was absolutely torture! But I got it done!! My only goal for my run was to do at least 7 miles, so even though I was miserably slow, I went over my goal and I’m very happy about that. πŸ˜„

Total Weekly Mileage: 17.11

If I would have actually finished that run on Thursday I would have been exactly at the weekly mileage that I had planned on doing every week in order to run 1,000 miles this year. I haven’t exactly given up on that goal yet, but I’m going to have ridiculously hard from this point on if I wanna get anywhere near that goal. Oh well I’m still going to keep trying for now. 😊

Rest Day Ramblings

I am very veryΒ very glad that today was a rest day! I guess the combination of a new puppy, weird sleep scheduled, attempting to stick with my training plan, but not really being able to do as much recovery stuff as I’d like to has all caught up with me today. Well, yesterday actually. For my long run yesterday I wanted to go for 7-9 ish miles, but I quickly realized that wasn’t going to happen. So I went for 5 and called it good. πŸ™‚ And it was pretty good. I felt tired and my legs didn’t want to move, but they weren’t bad miles by any means. I did, however, wake up with super sore legs and that kinda sucks, but oh well.

How pretty is my peach tree! I can’t wait for fresh peaches this summer!

Anyway, for the last two or three days, Finn’s been waking up and crying at around 1 in the morning. He doesn’t have to pee or anything, trust me I’ve tried. He just wants to wake up and play. So I’ve been ignoring him when he does it. Luckily he doesn’t cry for very long, but it still sucks having your sleep interrupted like that. Especially for a few days in a row…He’s lucky he’s so cute or else I’d be mad at him haha. I’m really hoping he picks up on our scheduled soon though. I’d also be really happy if he’d finally get on board with the whole crate training thing. He’s not a fan of the crate and cries every time he gets put in it, even when he’s super tired. I’ve never had a little puppy like him fight crate training so hard, but Luke and I are being super persistent. He needs to learn.

img_2486

He prefers sleeping on people’s laps.

Staying on the subject of dogs, well kind of at least. We’ve had some very much needed rain over the weekend! And it’s supposed to be pretty rainy for most of this week as well, which is great! It’s been super duper dry here in Kansas and we really need the rain. Plus it’s great for our garden! I’m hoping by the end of the week some of the seeds we planted will germinate and then start coming up. The only problem with all of the rain is mud. Lots and lots of mud. And when you have 3 border collies, 2 of which have super hairy feet and are basically impossible to get all of the mud out unless they get a full blown bath, 1 puppy who likes to roll around in the mud, and 1 dog that doesn’t belong to you but lives in your house and also likes to roll around in the mud, well I think you get where I’m going with this. My floors are basically just made of mud at this point. There’s dirt everywhere. I feel like my house is never going to be clean ever again.

img_2506

Dean is well aware of how dirty he is and how unhappy I am about it. Ah the joys of dog ownership. πŸ˜‰

So along with all of the muddy nastiness, our Β front loading washing machine has been completely fucked up. A while back Luke and I had to take it all apart just to clean out a filter that was super hard to get to. After we did that it started working perfectly fine again. For about a week…After that it started reading all sorts of weird error codes, the door wouldn’t unlock unless you unplugged it for an hour and then plugged it back in, it would just randomly fill with water so I had to start turning it off, and eventually it stopped draining and so for about a week it was just full of nasty, mildew-y water and it smelled terrible. Needless to say, I haven’t really been able to get much laundry done.

Yesterday Luke and I were completely fed up with it and didn’t want to take it apart again, so we went out and bought a top loading washing machine. While we were at the store, we figured we might as well get a new vacuum as well. Ours is pretty old, and is constantly getting clogged with dog hair, because my brother-in-law’s dog sheds like freaking crazy (I really need to start brushing him every day…). So we talked to a sales associate, and he recommended a Dyson. He has the exact model that we bought, along with 2 Irish Setters (which he showed us pictures of haha). That’s actually why we ended up buying this vacuum. He said he’s had his for two years and it’s never gotten clogged, but even if it did get clogged this vacuum has a bunch of ways to clear anything out without having to take the whole thing apart, which totally sold me! I’m very much tired of having to take apart my old vacuum. It was a little more expensive then we would have liked, but we’re hoping that means we wont have to replace it anytime soon.

img_2516

You know you’re an adult when you get excited about a new vacuum and washing machine haha.

Most of my rest day has been spent doing laundry and battling the invasion of the mud and dirt with my fancy new vacuum. It’s pretty much a loosing battle, but hey, I can try! I’m just excited that I can finally do laundry again! Between being a runner, having a husband (he can be kinda messy and doesn’t know how to do laundry πŸ˜‰ ), and having so many pets means that our laundry piles up very quickly! Plus the house smells sooo much better now that we’ve got the old washing machine that was full of gross water out of the house. It’s currently sitting in the garage, and I’m not sure what we’re going to do with it now, but at least we’ve got one problem solved!

So anyways, I ate like total shit last week. Too much junk, too much sugar, not enough vegetables, not enough water. It wasn’t pretty…So when I stepped onto the scale this morning I thought that I had probably gained a pound or two, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that I didn’t gain anything! I weighed in at 158.5 pounds, which is what I weighed last week. I have absolutely no idea how they heck that happened, but I’m sure not complaining! I also ate pretty darn well today, drank enough water, and am feeling pretty good! I’m definitely feeling like I’m back on track, have my food intake back under control, and hopefully I’ll start loosing some weight again. πŸ™‚ I really want to not hate the way I look in a swimsuit while we’re in Florida in July, I wanna look awesome for the Green Day concert in August, I want to be a better, more efficient runner, and I want to be an all around healthier person. I’ve gotta keep reminding myself of those things whenever I make food choices.

I hope your week is off to a great start! Happy Monday everyone!

What I Ate Wednesday: 3/15/17

I’ve been doing a lot better food-wise since my last “What I Ate Wednesday” post. I did have a bunch of pizza and a few beers one night, but other than that things have been pretty good! I’ve even lost 2 pounds! Not bad, if you ask me. πŸ™‚ I’m definitely headed in the right direction in setting healthier eating habits.

Breakfast:

  • Sausage/egg sandwich (breakfast sausage and 1 scrambled egg on 2 slices of whole wheat bread).
  • Coffee with 1/2 cup soy milk, 2 tbs honey, and 1 tbs coconut oil.

Post-run/Pre-strength workout snack:

  • 1 chocolate Honey Stinger Waffle

This was my last chocolate flavored waffle. Sad face. Oh well, I still have a bunch of honey flavored waffles, and those are really good too! πŸ™‚

Processed with Rookie Cam

Lunch:

  • Cabbage and cauliflower roasted with 1 tbs olive oil, and some chicken.

img_2247

Afternoon Snack:

  • Peanut butter/honey sandwich (2 tbs peanut butter and 1 tbs honey on 2 slices of whole wheat bread).

img_2224

Dinner:

  • 1 cup of plain Cheerios with 1/2 cup plain greek yogurt, 1 tbs chia seeds, and 1 tbs honey.

Ok, but yogurt mixed with cereal is sooo good!!

img_2249

Evening Snack:

  • Another cup of Cheerios
  • A couple of clementines

I don’t have a picture of either, but whatever. πŸ˜‰

Ok so I eat a lot of honey haha. But I have a horrible sweet tooth, and I figure honey is a much better alternative to excessive amounts of sugar, or high fructose corn syrup, or any of those artificial sweeteners. I mean, at least it’s good for you. Plus I usually get raw, local honey (the stuff I currently have is local, but not raw unfortunately), so at the very very least I’m helping to support my local bee keepers! And I’m seriously all about that life! I keep telling Luke we need to plant all sort of bee friendly flowers in our landscaping, but we just haven’t gotten around to it yet..Anyway, all in all I’d say I made some good choices today. πŸ™‚

Edit:

So like 5 minutes after I typed the sentence about us not getting around to planting bee friendly plants in our landscaping, my mother in law sent me a message on Facebook about the neat thing Cheerios is currently doing. They are giving away  wildflower seed packets for free (seriously, they are 100% free, I didn’t even have to pay for shipping)! So I officially don’t have an excuse to not have bee friendly flowers in my garden anymore. I love bees and I love Cheerios, so I’m so freaking stoked about this right now! Go get your free seed packet here and help #bringbackthebees! 🐝

What I Ate Wednesday: 3/8/2017

I haven’t really talked about food for a while. Kinda crazy, considering food is one of my favorite things ever, and not too long ago I was talking all about how I was going eat more clean and be more accountable with myself, and stuff like that.

As far as clean eating goes, well, I’m not doing terrible. I haven’t exactly been doing great with it either though. Like, I just haven’t been making very good decisions with food, but that’s usually my problem. That and lack of self control…but I’m not going to get into that right now. Anyway, Luke’s been hardcore overhauling his diet, so I figure now would be a good time for me to do the same!  Especially since we have that Florida vacation coming up. I want to be able to wear a swim suit and hang out on the beach without feeling like a fat tub of lard.

So here’s the accountability part of all of that! It’s a lot easier to make good food decisions when you know you’re going to post what you ate on the internet, for all the world to see. πŸ˜‰

Breakfast:

  • Coffee with 1/2 cup vanilla soy milk, 1 tbs coconut oil, and 2 tbs honey.
  • 1 hard boiled egg, 1 banana, and 1 clementine.

I swear putting coconut oil into coffee is actually really really tasty! Also, I’m way to lazy to actually make a half decent breakfast. Haha at least I got some protein, fat, and carbs first thing in the morning. πŸ™‚

Processed with Rookie Cam

Morning Snack:

  • A handful of yellow cherry tomatoes.

img_2107

Lunch:

  • cabbage and cauliflower roasted in 1 tbs olive oil, and some turkey sausage.

img_2109

Snack:

  • Peanut butter/banana/honey sandwich

img_2110

Dinner:

  • Chocolate-y, pretzel-y goodness

See this shit right here (well below)? This is literally crack. It’s basically chocolate bark with pretzels, M&Ms, and graham crackers. So. Freaking. Delicious.

Not a very good food choice on my part though. But I was having a really bad day and I wouldn’t shut up about it. So I guess Luke thought some chocolate would help, and picked me up this glorious treat on his way home from work. He was totally right, the chocolate did make me feel better, well, except for the fact that I ate the whole container and got a stomachache, but whatever. Totally worth it!

img_2113

So yeah, this wasn’t exactly a great day of eating, I definitely need to reign it in a little if I want to lose a little bit of weight before the Florida trip happens, but it also wasn’t a disastrous day. Lots of plants were had, which is really good! And a good amount of healthy fats with the olive and coconut oils. I definitely need to work on my protein intake though. I can never seem to get enough of that in. I also need to learn to control my sweet tooth just a little bit. Obviously chocolate for dinner was a bad idea, but other than that, I’m thinking I did alright. I know what I need to work on and I feel like I’m definitely headed back in the right direction with my food choices. πŸ™‚
