Oh Shit, It’s Race Week!

I guess that means I should start being a little more positive and stop worrying about the things I can’t control, or the training I didn’t get to do because of an injury, or the fact that I got sick last week and am still getting over that virus. But I do like to complain, so I promise nothing! 😉

So, things that I can control, do, and that I plan on taking very seriously this week are as follow;

  • Get enough sleep. I’ve been doing pretty well with sleep, so I’ve just gotta keep that up!
  • Drink enough water. I haven’t been doing so great with this one. Like, I know you need to drink more when you’re sick, by it’s so hard to do when you don’t feel like drinking or even eating much.
  • Eat a little better. Since I’ve been sick I’ve been living off of canned soup and Halloween candy, because same as the above with water. Not ideal, but hey, what are you gonna do? 😉
  • Make a kick ass playlist. Because if I’m gonna suffer I’m gonna have fun doing it, damn it!
  • Visualize my fueling strategy for the race. So, 1 Honey Stinger waffles at the starting line, maybe half an hour before the gun goes off. 1 cup of water at every aid station and water AND Gatorade at every other aid station (the aid stations are about every 2 miles which is exactly what I trained for! Go me!). Along with 1/2 of a Honey Stinger waffles around miles 4, 6, 8, and 10. And maybe a cup of beer around mile 11 if they’re handing it out again. 😉 Hahaha my fuel plan is literally the only plan I’ve worked out for this half, so I’m hardcore clinging to it!

Whew, alrighty then! I’m not anywhere near the realm of prepared for this half marathon, but I’ve covered the distance twice before and I know I can make it to that finish line again. And that’s my only goal; crossing the finish line.

I’m coming for you half marathon number 3!!

10 Miles In Struggleville

Look out half marathon number 3! I’m coming for you!! I feel like it’s gonna suck and I’m not going to be having much fun, but now I know I can do it!!

My long run this morning, it was pretty terrible. I’m not at all surprised by that though. This was the longest run I’ve done since August, so I kinda figured it was going to suck. Honestly most of my problem was probably mental. I didn’t sleep well last night and running 10 miles was literally the last thing I wanted to do. But I knew that if I didn’t get it done this morning that I probably never would, so I went out and did it. It sucked. It was slow. I had to fight for every single step that I took. But I did it and I’m probably better for it. Maybe I didn’t improve my fitness at all, but I think I made huge strides with my metal toughness today.

After my run I decided I needed to continue torturing myself and take an ice bath haha. Ice baths are usually a pretty miserable experience, but my legs always end up feeling a lot better in the hours and days following a long run and ice bath, so I suck it up and I do it. Haha the only problem with that was that I didn’t have any ice!

The ice maker in my freezer has been broken for quite some time now and I keep forgetting to get a bag of ice whenever I’m out and about. So when I had about 2 miles left in my run I texted Luke and asked him if he could get me some, and some chocolate milk too. 😉 He was at work, but I could have stopped by and picked it up once I was done. So he did get me what I asked for, but thanks to my awesome next door neighbor I didn’t have to go get it! She had gone there to talk to Luke to see if I could baby sit her daughter today, because she’s not feeling well and wants some time to just relax. So he told her I could (after he texted me and asked me first haha) and he sent my milk and ice with her, so by the time I got home it was sitting on my front porch. So yeah, my husband’s awesome, my neighbor’s awesome, and I was reminded that running really is a team sport. 🙂 Haha and I’m also baby sititng a 3 year old by myself today, which is waaay out of my comfort zone (I just don’t feel like I’m good with small children), but she’s a good kid and enjoys hanging out here.

Anyways, my excitement of not having to go get my stuff was very short lived, because I mean, I had to go spend 20 minutes sitting in a tub full of ice cold water. Fun times…Haha luckily Winchester decided to keep my company during that little adventure. Honestly he seemed very confused about the fact that I was fully clothed in a bathtub full of freezing cold water. And thanks to my wonderful husband I had many options as to what I was drinking while I was in there; I had my hot coffee to make the experience a little less terrible, my favorite flavor of Gatorade that he had picked up for me the other day and that I’d been sipping on during my run, and the chocolate milk that I’d asked for. 🙂

After my ice bath I ate a little snack and waited for about 30 minutes before I took a nice hot shower (I think I read somewhere that you’re supposed to wait a little bit after ice baths before you get into a hot shower, to let your core temperature get closer to normal by itself. I have no idea if that was long enough, but oh well. 😉 ), then attempted to nap. After laying down for a few minutes I knew that wasn’t going to happen. It seems like no matter how tired I am after a long run I can never seem to nap. Does anyone else have this problem?

Anyway, it’s 1:26 pm as I type this, and my neighbor is supposed to be here around 2 or 3 ish, so I need to go pick up the house and do a little bit of stretching before she gets here.

Happy Saturday!
