August 21st, 2018

Hey guys! Sorry about the lack of posts lately. Our wifi was going in and out and it was a whole thing…It’s fixed now though, so we’re back in business! πŸ™‚

Anyway, we had two whole days of rain on Sunday and Monday and that’s really cooled things off here in Kansas! It’s been great!! Running is so much more pleasant when the temperatures are in the 60’s. πŸ™‚ Yesterday’s easy 3 miler was great! And I wish I could say the same about today’s 4 mile interval workout. That didn’t go as well. My quads were just absolutely dead today. Not sure why but I figured that was a pretty good indication that I needed to spends some quality time with my foam roller today. So I cut my run short halfway through at 2 miles. I really didn’t want to, but man my legs just weren’t feeling right, so it was probably a good decision. Just one that I wasn’t exactly happy to have to make.

img_4259

While short, this run was still kinda interesting! Since the weather has been really nice there are a lot of people outside mowing their yards, working on roofs, putting in new windows, and there is a little bit of construction going on in my neighborhood. So trying to stay out of other people’s way and not get run over by heavy machinery is a great way to spice up any run! πŸ˜‰ Plus I saw two loose chickens in someone’s front yard this morning. I have a feeling they weren’t supposed to be there and I hope they eventually got put where they should be.

img_4251-1

That’s one very amusing thing about living in a very small, semi-rural town. Our city ordinary specifically says we can’t keep chickens, but there are at least four other people in my neighborhood, aside from myself, who definitely have chickens. And honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if there weren’t more! Haha one guy even has geese, doves, and other kinds of birds, along with his chickens. At one point he even had a peacock and he also breeds his basset hounds occasionally. So obviously these city ordinances aren’t being enforced. But I feel like as long as it’s not causing any problems nobody really cares. They joys of small town living! πŸ™‚

Before we even got our chickens we actually asked several of our neighbors if they would mind and they were all fine with it, which was super cool. And so far we haven’t had any issues with them. Hens are usually pretty quite unless they are upset about something or are laying an egg, and even then they aren’t too terribly loud. Plus we don’t have a rooster so we don’t have to worry about that. Really the only potential issue we would have with them is the smell. Chickens aren’t exactly cleanly animals and their poop smells (but in all fairness, who’s poop doesn’t smell?) and their feed can smell too if it gets wet and starts to mold. So we just have to keep their coop nice and clean, which isn’t an issue because that’s something I’d do anyway. Healthy chickens are happy chickens, and happy chickens lay better eggs. πŸ™‚

So after my run I washed all of their stuff and cleaned out the coop. I shared a lot of that process on Instagram so I figured I might as well share that here as well. πŸ™‚

First I washed all of their “dishes” and their pool. Haha I had several different containers out there for snacks and ice water from when it was super hot out, so usually I wouldn’t have this much to wash, but either way it needed done.

So mud and chicken poop got scrubbed off of all of that stuff. Including the pool. Then most of that stuff went back in the house where it got washed again, and then run through the dishwasher. But their water thing and the pool got filled with clean water with a little bit of apple cider vinegar mixed in with it. I swear ACV hasΒ  a use for just about everything! In this case it helps keep the pool from growing a bunch of algae and keeps their water container from getting really slimy and gross. Plus it can help keep the chickens from getting internal parasites, so it’s just very useful all around!

img_4267

Yeah, this will stay clean for about a day…

After that was all taken care of, I moved on to the inside of the coop. Luckily it usually doesn’t get too gross in there, since they usually only sleep up there. So I scooped out their old straw, poop, and what not and then put new straw in their nesting area. Fun fact; chickens create a lot of dust! Between their poop drying up and old straw and feed breaking down, it gets really dusty in there! So I have to wear a mask thingy because I have asthma and that shit irritates my lungs haha. But the mask really does help.

The chicken pictured above is my smallest one. But she’s my little buddy. She follows me around and lets me pick her up. I’m not sure if she actually likes being picked up, but she tolerates it better than the other 7 haha. As of yet she doesn’t have a name, but I’m thinking she’s gonna need one! Well, as long as she’s distinguishable from the other 5 Rhode Island Red’s. They’re all kinda hard to tell apart. She’s just easy because she’s smaller than the rest of them.

Anyway, after the inside of the coop is clean then I clean up the outside area. That usually just involves cleaning up more poop and old feed. I actually didn’t have much to do in that department today. It was a little muddy in there from the rain so there really wasn’t much to clean up. The tarp we have over the outer coop keeps the chickens relatively dry when it rains. At least dry enough that they don’t want to go inside haha. But some water does drip down and it seeps in from the ground outside of the coop. It’s not too crazy muddy in there though. Just muddy enough to keep me from having to clean up a bunch of poop haha. πŸ˜‰

It does take a little bit of work to keep them all clean, but honestly it’s really not bad. I’d imagine if I just let it all go and not keep up with it for a while it would get pretty gross in there though. But anyway, that’s what I do to keep my coop clean and my chickens happy. πŸ™‚

Now then, I really need to go foam roll. I’ve been putting it off all day…

Weekly Recap: July 30th – August 5th, 2018

Another great week of training is in the bag!

I did my last run of the week today and that officially wraps up week two of training for Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days. Obviously I’m not very far into my training, but at this point I’m feeling great physically and mentally! So lets get right into this week’s recap! πŸ™‚

Monday:

  • 3 easy miles

Kicked off the week with a nice and easy 3 miler. We had some pretty nice weather earlier this week and it was in the high 60’s when I did this run on Monday morning. It was pretty darn nice!

img_3874

Tuesday:

  • 3 miles, intervals
  • 20 minutes of Pilates

Intervals! Yay!! Haha so it’s actually been a hot minute since I’ve done a real, actual interval workout so this one was pretty tough! My paces were a little slower than I would have liked, but like I said, it’s been a while. Plus by Tuesday it was starting to get a little more hot out again, so I’m not too worried about it. I’m still happy with what I got done! Followed my run with 20 minutes of Pilates because I’m working on that strength! All in all pretty happy with the work I put in on Tuesday.

img_3761

WednesdayΒ

  • 30 minutes of strength training

Day off from running but still put in some work! During my little strength session I kinda came to grips with the fact that I avoid push ups at all costs. They’re hard and I hate them haha. But since I’m trying to build strength through my entire body I figured maybe I should work on some of my weaknesses and this seemed like a good place to start, especially since it was the first day of August. So I decided to do a push up challenge thing for the month of August. Just to force myself to do them and hopefully at least get a little bit better at them. So we shall see how that goes.

img_3778

Thursday:

  • 3 easy miles

Just another easy 3 miler followed by day two of my push up challenge! Haha like I said, I’m really bad at push ups. I can’t really go down all that far, but I still accomplished 4 push ups on my toes instead of on my knees, so I’ll take it!

img_3797

Friday:

  • rest day

Luke and I had a pretty busy day on Friday! We had errands to run, groceries to buy, and then we made a jar of tomato sauce, 2 jars of strawberry jam, and a jar of blueberry jam. That was a lot of fun. You can read more about that here, if you’re interested! πŸ™‚

img_3842

Saturday:

  • 8 miles
  • 30 minutes of yoga

Longer run #1 done for the weekend!!! Since I’m going to be running back to back half’s I figure that means I need to do at least a few back to back long-ish runs. So that was my plan for this weekend. πŸ™‚

Saturday’s long run was relatively uneventful. It wasn’t great but it wasn’t terrible. I was treated to a really pretty sunrise though, so that was nice. πŸ™‚ Afterwards I spent a good majority of the day resting, re-hydrating, and mentally preparing to go again on Sunday. I don’t think I’ve ever run the day after a long run before, so this is a brand new experience for me.

img_3861

Sunday:

  • 5 miles

Well, mission accomplished!! I followed yesterday’s long run with a medium long run today and I didn’t die! πŸ˜‰ Haha my legs were kinda tired, but other than that I felt pretty great! During the first mile-ish I was viciously assaulted with lots of love by a black lab who snuck out of the door while his owner was walking outside. I didn’t see it but all of a sudden I heard the unmistakable sound of a dog running at full speed right at me, so I turned to look, saw him coming, and had time to say “oh shit,” before he was right on me. Luckily he was just friendly and wanted love. But had he not been that could have ended badly for me. I had very little time to react before he got to me. Haha he was a very speedy boy. But his owner ran after him and apologized and since nothing bad happened I told him it was all good and that I love dogs. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like to stop during my runs to pet dogs, haha this one just kinda scared me at first!

Anyway, after my run I watered the garden, fed the chickens and cleaned up around their coop, and then did a few more chores around the house. After that I was pretty tired and spent most of the day focusing on re-hydrating and resting. Luckily tomorrow is a rest day. I’m really looking forward to that haha.

img_3896

Total Weekly Mileage: 22Β

Starting to move onward and upward! So far my half marathon training is going really well and I hope that continues! I’m currently feeling very positive about training and my upcoming half’s!! πŸ™‚ Oh and I’ve also been doing a pretty good job of keeping up with this push up challenge so far! I can’t actually go down very far yet, but I’ve been doing them all on my toes and that’s a total win for me! Pretty stoked about that haha.

img_3897.jpg

Anyway, I hope you’ve had a great weekend!!

Until next time,

~Ashley

Canning Season, A Long Run, and August’s StrideBox

It’s officially one of my favorite times of year! It’s canning season!! Yay!

Unfortunately we’ve had a pretty bad growing season. It’s been hot, the sun has been intense, and we haven’t had nearly enough rain, and my garden is suffering. My zucchini plants died, one of my berry bushes died, my cucumber plants aren’t doing so well, my watermelon plants haven’t even grown new flowers for at least two weeks, and my tomato plants are looking really sad. But they have started producing enough tomatoes for us to start doing some stuff with them, so yesterday Luke and I made a jar of tomato sauce. πŸ™‚

img_3823

It is kind of a long process for one little jar of sauce, but we thing it’s totally worth it! First you have to blanch the tomatoes, then peel the skin off and then cut off the stems, quarter them, and then let them boil in a sauce pan until they’re completely broken down and add in salt and lemon juice. While all of that’s happening you have to sterilize your jar (boiling it for about a minute works pretty well πŸ™‚ ) and once your sauce and jar are ready you pour the sauce into your now sterile jar, put the lid on nice and tight, and then boil it for another 45 minutes or so. Then you let the jar sit on your counter until the lid seals (hearing it pop shut is a very rewarding experience haha) and then store it for future chilly or pasta sauce, or whatever. Aside from the salt and lemon juice we don’t season it at all. That just makes it more versatile when you go to use it! Obviously this is just a super simplified version of what happens. Maybe once I feel like we’ve perfected the art of canning I’ll share our step by step instructions. πŸ˜‰

After our single jar of tomato sauce was done we moved on to making a few jars of berry jam, just for fun. We had to use store bought berries though. At this point none of our berry plants are producing enough fruit for us to do anything other than eat right away haha. But I have pretty high hopes for my strawberry plant! It did fantastic this year and it should do even better next year! Anyway, making the jam was pretty similar to making the tomato sauce. We just had to smash the berries before boiling them to break them down even more and then adding lots of sugar haha. So I mean, it’s not very healthy in that regard, but at least we know exactly what went into it (berries, sugar, lemon juice) and it doesn’t have any corn syrup, artificial sweetener, or weird food dyes in it. So I think that’s a plus! And it’s just a lot of fun to make! πŸ™‚

So now we have one jar of tomato sauce, two jars of strawberry jam, and one jar of blueberry jam. Not Bad! And I’m sure come fall we will have added more to our little store of homemade canned goods. πŸ™‚ Growing, processing, and cooking your own food is such a fun and rewarding experience! I think everyone should do at least a little bit of it! I personally thing those are all very useful skills to have. πŸ™‚

img_3842

Our tomato sauce and two jars of strawberry jam. Haha the blueberry wasn’t quite done when I took this photo. πŸ˜‰Β

So Luke and I were pretty busy yesterday! In the morning we had to go grocery shopping and then took care of a few other things while we were out. Then we had to fix the tarp on the chicken coop (the wind keeps blowing it around and messing it all up) and then just kinda played with the chickens for a while. We did all of our canning and then cleaned up the kitchen (both of which took a while haha) and we still managed to get to be around 10 pm last night! Good thing too, because I needed to wake up at 5:00 this morning so I could do this week’s long run before it got too hot outside.

img_3850

We actually got a nice little break from the intense heat and at this point it’s looking like we wont be going back to having all sorts of heat and air quality warnings like we were having in June and July, but the hotter weather is back and that means I have to wake up super early to get out before the sun. Yuck. Waking up at 5 am is not my favorite thing to do, and I totally got spoiled from our little break from the heat so I’m not used to doing it anymore haha. I did it this morning though and was treated to a very nice sunrise.

All of those pretty colors didn’t actually last very long. The sky was pink for maybe 5 minutes, then it turned more yellow/orange for a few minutes, and then it turned to more normal daytime colors. I guess that’s what makes sunrises so special though. They don’t last very long and in the summer you have to get up pretty early to see them.

Anyway, had yet another uneventful long run. I wasn’t feeling too great today, but I also didn’t feel too terrible either haha. Tomorrow might be a lot more interesting though. Since I’m training for two half marathons in two days I plan on doing some back to back long-ish runs. So the plan for this weekend was to do 8 miles today, which I did. πŸ™‚ And then do 5 miles tomorrow. I don’t think I’ve ever run the day after a long run before and if I ever have it was probably a super short one. Maybe like 1 or 2 miles. So tomorrow will be a brand new experience for me! I feel like my legs are going to be super tired, but that’s pretty much the whole point of doing it haha! We shall see though. Hopefully it wont be too bad.

img_3861

I’m only two weeks into my training plan but I’m currently just trying to take it one day, one run, and one mile at a time, and not think too much about what I have coming in the future or what I did in the past. I’m hoping getting into and then staying in that mindset will help me get through the rest of this training cycle (because it’s gonna be a big one for me!) and then my two half marathons. I don’t think overthinking is going to help me so I’m just gonna try to do the exact opposite. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, not long after I finished my run the mail came and my August StrideBox did too!! That was a pleasant surprise, because last time I had checked the tracker for it, it said it wasn’t going to get here until Monday. πŸ™‚ This months box came with all sorts of fun snack like things, which is pretty much my favorite thing to get in my StrideBoxes. It also came with another cooling towel which is awesome because I lost mine haha. I’m not sure where or how my old one got away from me, but at least now I have a new one! πŸ˜‰ I’m also pretty excitied the protein gummy’s that came in it. I didn’t even know protein gummy’s were a thing, but I love me some gummy candy and have a slight issue with consuming enough protein on a daily basis, so I enjoy finding tasty things that help with that.

img_3869

Also, I just need to take a second to express how awkward it is for me to see the word “daily” spelled out properly. Ever since I got married my last name has been Dailey (pronounced the same way as “daily”) so the normal word just looks weird to me now every time I see it. Haha I know that’s kinda weird, but these are the things I experience in my life. πŸ˜‰

Okey Dokey then! That is all for today! I’ll let you know how my 5 miler tomorrow goes in my weekly recap that will be up tomorrow evening. πŸ™‚

Happy Saturday!

~Ashley

Weekly Recap: July 23rd-29th, 2018

The first week of training for Operation Two Half Marathons in Two Days is done!! I think it went really well and all-in-all it was a great way to kick off this training cycle! Now hopefully the next 15 weeks will go just as well. πŸ˜‰ We’ll just have to wait and see about that, but at this point I’m super stoked and motivated to be training and working towards a new goal! πŸ™‚

Monday:

  • 3 easy miles
  • 30 minutes of strength work

Started off the week with 3 easy miles, followed by 30 minutes of strength work! Right now I really want to focus on getting stronger! I think that’s going to be really important to help get me across both finish lines on November 10th and 11th and will hopefully help reduce my likely hood of getting injured. I feel like I’m going to need all of the help I can get in that department haha. But anyway, for the most part Monday’s run was good, but uneventful. πŸ™‚

img_3560

Tuesday:

  • 2 “steady” miles

In the past when my training plans have called for steady runs, I usually just ignore the steady part haha. I’m not very good at holding a steady pace. In fact, that’s probably one of my biggest weaknesses as a runner. But instead of ignoring that this time, I took my run onto the treadmill instead! Because as long as you don’t mess with the speed on the treadmill too much, it pretty much forces you to run at a steady pace haha. But the thing is, I usually do interval stuff on the treadmill because constantly changing up the pace helps fight off the boredom of running on a treadmill. But I did manage to make this run a steady one and hopefully got a little bit stronger mentally by sticking it out at one pace on the treadmill haha. πŸ™‚

img_3574

Wednesday:

  • 5 easy miles
  • 30 minutes of yoga

So on Tuesday night I went to Luke’s softball games and ended up staying up a little too late, so I wasn’t too thrilled about having to wake up early on Wednesday morning. Getting out of bed and eating breakfast was hard. Getting dressed and getting out of the door was hard. But once I managed that things got considerably more easy. πŸ˜‰ Then later in the afternoon I did a really nice yoga session. I didn’t realize how tight my body actually was until I got onto my yoga mat haha. But at least I did something about it and I ended up feeling pretty good afterward!

img_3593

Thursday:

  • rest day

Thursday was actually supposed to be another strength day, but I was sore and tired and kinda had a feeling that if I did do a workout that my run the next day wouldn’t go as well. So I ended up sleeping in a little bit, I got to slow down and really enjoy my breakfast that morning. Then I worked on some blog posts, cleaned up around the house a little bit, did a little more yoga in the afternoon, and spent the rest of my day reading and relaxing. πŸ™‚ There was a time when I would feel kind of guilty for not doing much of anything for a day, but rest is most definitely part of the program!! Not too long ago Alexi Pappas did a live stream on her Instagram account and said something to the affect of “days off are like allowing your body to marinate in you’re hard work”, and compared it to letting a steak marinate in the fridge for a day. For some reason that really got through to me and now I’m trying to take my off days more seriously and giving my training seep into my body a little bit more and not feel guilty that I “didn’t do anything that day” or didn’t hit my step goal or whatever.

img_3614

Friday:

  • 2 easy miles
  • about 10 minutes of strength work

My training plan called for a fartlek on Friday, but I didn’t really feel like doing a fartlek. That just didn’t sound like fun. So instead I just did a couple of easy miles. Noting fancy but it felt good! Followed that with a very very small amount of strength work, but I figure a little bit is better than nothing at all!

Then on Friday night we helped some friends move (more strength work? πŸ˜‰ ) and then went out to dinner with them. We ended up staying out later than we’d planned, but it was a good time. πŸ™‚

img_3660

Saturday:

  • 8 miles

Getting out of bed on Saturday morning was hard. It seems like no one in my life understands my need for sleep haha. I just don’t feel great if I don’t sleep for 8 hours a night. Luke thinks I’m just being a baby, but damn it I need to sleep! Haha anyway, I ended up getting up a little bit later that I would have liked, butΒ it was cloudy and in the 70’s today, so I wasn’t too worried about it. It did start warming up more towards the end of my run, but at least I didn’t end up having to run in 80 or 90 degrees. That would have sucked! But all in all it was a pretty decent run and I had a pretty decent time doing it. πŸ™‚

img_3692

Sunday:

  • rest day

Since Sunday was a day off of running I took all three dogs out for walks. One at a time though haha. If I take more than one at a time they gang up on me and will drag me around town, chasing every squirrel we see! So while walking the dogs I was also playing Pokemon Go. Mostly catching pokemon, but I also battled and took over a gym. Now this has been kind of an ongoing thing, but there’s this guy in my town who always goes around taking over the gyms. He’s super annoying and a higher level than pretty much everyone else in my town, so today I made it my mission in life to keep him out of the gym closest to my house. Every time he’d take it over, I’d go over there and take it back. 3 times I took that gym from him. It was great hahaha! Luke even helped me take over a few gyms from him when he got home from work, but my main objective was to keep that one from him and I feel I was very successful that that. So yeah, that’s how I spent most of my day. πŸ˜‰

img_3726

Total Weekly Mileage: 20.12

Not exactly where I wanted to be at this point in the year, but I’ll take it! I feel like I’m off to a pretty good start for my training! This week was a good one, but there’s still a lot more work to be done! I’m excited to see what I can get done next week and throughout this entire training cycle!

Your currently very motivated runner friend,

Half Marathon Training W1D3

Oh man, this morning was rough!

Luke plays softball on his company’s league on Tuesday’s. They’re always double headers and each game lasts about an hour. Which is no big deal. But last night his first game started at 8:30 pm, so we were at the softball fields until 10:30 and didn’t get to bed until well after 11 that night. That’s really not that big of an issue. I just turn into a big baby when I don’t get enough sleep, and I’m still getting up earlier than usual to beat the summer heat.

Plus I’m just feeling kinda worn out from my runs on Monday and Tuesday. But I knew that was coming and that this week would be kinda tough. I’m hoping if I just stick it out that next week will be better. It anyway, getting out of bed this morning was hard. Eating breakfast and getting dressed was hard. Stepping out the door and starting my Garmin was hard. But after that things got considerably easier. πŸ˜‰

The plan for today was 5 easy miles and that’s what I did! Nothing all too exciting to report from this run either, but honestly that’s not a bad thing! I’d rather have a decent, uneventful run, than a bad, exciting run haha. But this run did get my blood moving, my muscles working, and woke me up a little, which I definitely needed! So far this week I’ve felt tired before my runs and then awake and energized afterwards, so that’s been a nice little bonus. πŸ™‚

Oh and during today’s run I notice that my legs are looking more and more like “runner’s” legs. They’re definitely getting slimmer, more muscle definition, and my quads are getting pretty big! I wish I would have thought to take a “before” photo of them, because obviously I can see the changes, but otherwise it’s kind of hard to know that anythings different. But I’ll definitely be saving the photo above so I’ll have something to compare to if I notice any more changes. I know I’ve been getting stronger, but I just think it’s cool to actually be able toΒ see the physical changes in my body. For many years I was very focused on just losing weight and nothing else. I didn’t care how strong I was, that I could run a half marathon, or that my body was capable of all sorts of amazing things. Now I’m not all too concerned about what the scale says and am more exciting to see and feel that I’m getting stronger, more capable, and hopefully more injury resistant haha. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, who else runs for second breakfast?!? I know I sure do!! It’s like, 90% of the reason why I’m willing to wake up early and go run. #breakfastfoodisthebestfood πŸ˜‰ Basically I’m just a hobbit. I’m always eating haha. I mean, I legit eat two breakfasts on most day’s that I run and its great. I usually also always have food on me. Last night before Luke’s softball games I was kind of upset that I had forgotten to wash my grapes earlier in the day, so the only snack I had out there at the softball fields for like 2 hours was a banana. That was a bummer and I was pretty hungry by the time we got home. And it’s not like I didn’t have a filling dinner or anything. I’m just always hungry. πŸ˜‚

So after I was satisfied with my second breakfast I took Lily for a short little walk, watered the garden and picked some more tomatoes, along with a little watermelon. Then I did some laundry, loaded, ran, and unloaded the dishwasher, vacuumed and just picked up the house in general, and then finally showered, ate lunch, and then sat down to work on a few blog posts.

Later in the afternoon I did about 30 minutes of yoga, and holy cow I didn’t realize how tight I was until I did! Haha it was pretty bad! But at least I took the time to do something about it and I ended up feeling pretty great afterwards so yay for that! πŸ™‚ After that I just kinda spent the rest of the afternoon hanging out and waiting for Luke to get home from work. He should be home in about half an hour and we might go out hunting for Pokemon when he does. πŸ˜‰

But that’s all for now! I feel like I’ve had a very successful day half marathon training, but I’m pretty darn excited that tomorrow is a cross training day so I don’t have to get up early to run haha.

Happy hump day!!

~Ashley

Half Marathon Training W1D2

First run of half marathon training for Operation Two Half Marathons in Two days is done!! πŸ™‚

Not gonna lie, I felt kind of out of shape today, but I suppose that’s bound to happen when you do little to no running for 2 weeks in a month. Oops. I’m not too worried about that though, these first few weeks might be a little tough but I’m sure I’ll start feeling better after that. Haha and then the real work will begin! πŸ˜‰

Now that being said, I actually felt really good on today’s run! I did an easy 3 miler, followed by 30 minutes of strength training. The run was uneventful, but a lot of fun! Last night I was so super stoked about it while I was getting all of my gear ready and I was even pretty excited to wake up early and get it done! It’s been a while since I’ve felt that way, so maybe those 2 weeks of little to no running were actually a good thing. πŸ˜‰ But I was super excited for this run and to start half marathon training! Plus it was like 68 degrees when I ran thisΒ  morning and that certainly helped! I’m hoping the crazy heat we’ve been having is finally done and being outside will actually be an option again!

img_3560

After my run I did about 30 minutes of strength work, which was not as fun. Haha it never is though. πŸ˜‰ But building a little more strength is something I really want to focus on right now. I feel like I’m gonna need it to make it across the finish line of both half marathons. Especially the second one.

So that really wasn’t too bad, but the whole out of shape feeling came after my run and my workout. After I did both of those things I went out and tended to the garden. Unfortunately my zucchini plants died while we were in Branson, so that sucks, but I’ve still got 4 watermelons growing on my watermelon vines, my strawberry plant is still kicking off a few berries ever now and then (although at this point I’m pretty sure it’s close to being done for the year), and my tomatoes, while very sad looking, are producing quite a bit of fruit! I picked a bunch of cherry tomatoes yesterday and a pretty decent amount today, as well as a few regular tomatoes. They crazy heatwave we had earlier this summer definitely didn’t go our garden any favors and we’re not having a good harvest because of it, but at least we’re getting something.

img_3561

Got a little off track there haha, but anyway, after my garden was tended to I took a shower and then felt absolutely starving (even though I had a good post run/workout snack) and exhausted! And that’s why I was feeling out of shape haha. I usually don’t feel that way unless I’m deep into training and just finished a hard workout. Nothing I did this morning was particularly hard and it definitely didn’t warrant me feeling like that haha. Oh man, it’s all good though. I ateΒ anotherΒ snack and the promptly passed out in my bed for about an hour and 20 minutes. The fact that I was able to get dressed and eat before I did that was a feat in and of itself. Along with actually being able to nap. Usually that’s a difficult thing for me to do for some reason. It was pretty great though! It was one of those naps that you wake up feeling kinda disoriented and totally out of it when you wake up. That’s how I know I napped hard. πŸ˜‰ But I felt fine, albeit still a little worn out feeling after a bottle of water and lunch. So that’s good.

I feel like I’m not going to be as excited or feel as good on tomorrows run haha. Oh well, it’s still going to happen. πŸ™‚

Anyways, that’s all for today! Wishing you a happy Monday and a great week!

Weekly Recap: July 9th-15th, 2018

Woohoo!! I was back at it this week! πŸ™‚

Well, kinda haha. I didn’t get as much done as I probably should have, but I still ran, and did a little bit of strength training, and stretching, and that’s much better than nothing!

And Good thing too! Because this week was the last week before our little family trip to Branson, Mo. I’m not sure how much running I’m going to be able to get done while we’re there. Luckily we won’t be gone for long. We’re leaving tomorrow morning and will be driving back home by Friday, so it’s nothing too crazy.

Monday:

  • 4 treadmill miles
  • 13 minutes of yoga

Kicked off the week with 4 miles on the treadmill! We had anther air quality alert from Sunday-Monday evening, so I figured it was best to do my run indoors. Had a little fun with this run and did kind of a ladder workout. Increased my pace incrementallyΒ  going up and then back down. It was actually a lot of fun!

Is it just me, or has this summer been particularly brutal?!? We’ve been getting heat and air quality warning like crazy here in Kansas. Hopefully the next 3 months wont end up as more of the same…

Tuesday:

  • 3 more treadmill miles
  • 15 minutes of strength work

Tuesday brought another heat and air quality advisory with it. So another treadmill run was had. Haha Luckily Luke and I have been going for short little walks in the evening. Obviously that’s not gonna be the same as the pounding I’d do while running on the asphalt, but at least I’m still spending a little bit of time out on the roads. Photo is from the night before on one of our walks, because running on the treadmill doesn’t exactly come with very exciting views. πŸ˜‰

Wednesday:Β

  • 15 minutes of pilates
  • 10 minutes of stretching

The heat warning continues!! I didn’t think it was safe for me to run outside and IΒ reallyΒ didn’t want to get on the treadmill again, so no run for me on Wednesday. Did a few other things in place of running though, so there’s that!

Haha so, since it’s been so hot out I’ve been having to keep ice in the chicken coop to keep them cool! They do not like being so hot, so it’s been kinda hard on them. But they’re doing ok. Every couple of hours I have to run out there, change their water, and give them more ice.

Thursday:Β

  • 3.33 treadmill miles

More time on the treadmill. Fun! πŸ˜‰ I just kinda hopped on with the intent to see just how long I could stay on. Apparently the answer was 3.33 miles. About then I was absolutely dying of boredom. Haha but at least it was something! Thursday night Luke and I went on yet anther little walk around the neighborhood. It was hot, humid, and gross, but still kinda nice. At least the sunset was pretty. πŸ™‚

Friday:

  • Did lots of work in the garden

So, yet another day without a run, but I was still pretty busy!! I spent quite a bit of time weed eating in and around the garden, pulling weeds, watering the plants, pruning back my tomatoes a little bit, and then picking and washing tomatoes and a few zucchini. Oh and did I mention it was another crazy hot day? Haha because of course it was! We are in desperate need of some rain and a break from all of this heat…

Saturday:

  • 3 miles

Oh hey! I ran outside on Saturday!! It was the first day in like, 3 weeks I think, that we haven’t had a air or heat warning and the first day in forever where the high was only 85. Crazy stuff, man! So obviously I had to get out while the weather was a little more decent! Unfortunately it was still pretty humid and I only ended up making it 3 miles before I felt like death and had to quit. Haha the humidity and heat just saps everything out of me…But I ran outside and I was still very happy about that! Even if it wasn’t a good run.

And then FINALLY, Saturday afternoon we had a little thunderstorm roll through! It rained for a little over an hour and then stayed cloudy for pretty much the rest of the day which was great! WeΒ reallyΒ needed the rain and a little break from the sun. It was fantastic!! But unfortunately it’s not looking like we’ve got much of a chance of that happening again anytime soon. There’s supposedly a few chances for more rain next week, but they’re really low; 30 and 40%. But hopefully that will change and we’ll get more rain. It’s been terribly dry and hot here and we need as much rain as we can get! Even if it does make the air more humid. πŸ˜‰

Sunday:

  • 2 miles

On Sunday my mother-in-law, her two kids (haha obviously Luke is her kid, and so is my brother-in-law. And obviously they are my brother and sister in law as well, but really I just consider them to be more of my brother and sister. Haha it’s just that our family, especially Luke’s side, is really big and gets kinda confusing and I don’t want to have to go over all of that on here. That is a lot of long stories that are not mine to tell. So, for all intents and purposes, this is what I’m going with hahaha), and her boyfriend stopped here on their way from Minnesota, which is where they live now, to Branson, MO. They didn’t stay long, they just wanted to take a little pit stop on their way there, and we’re gonna be there on Monday anyway, so it’s not like we’re not going to see each other again for a while. So they just kinda hung out for an hour or so and then hit the road again.

And once they left I did too! But on foot. πŸ˜‰ It was yet another super hot, super humid day, but I wanted to run outside again, so I did 2 easy miles. Well, they were slow anyway. Haha they sure didn’t feel easy! But I know it was good for me. Doing tough summer runs like that is only going to make fall running (and hopefully training for and then doing those two half marathons is two days) that much more enjoyable!

Total weekly mileage: 15.36Β

Meh, that’s not that great. But honestly it’s a lot better than I thought I was gonna do, so I’ll take it!

Anyway, I spent a lot of time yesterday packing for our family trip and today I’ve finished that up, gotten all of the animals situated, and took care of everything in the garden that I had wanted to do before we leave. So we should be good to go! Tomorrow morning we’re going to drop the dogs off at the kennel, which is going to be terrible and heart-wrenching and I’m not looking forward to it. Every other time we’ve ever gone anywhere we’ve either been able to bring the dogs with us (can’t do that this time. The owners of the cabins we’re staying in don’t allow pets), they’ve stayed with my mom and dad or Luke’s dad, or someone has been able to stay at home with them. But this time we couldn’t do any of that. So a kennel it is! And my family owned a kennel, I grew up working in it, so I know they’re gonna be fine. It’s just that they’re gonna be so sad and confused because they’ve never been to one before and they’ve never been left alone with people they don’t know (except for Dean who got neutered and had to stay at the vet over night, but that was the only time). They’re probably going to whine, cry, be pitiful, and not eat the whole time they’re there and like, think we’ve abandoned them or something. And that just makes me sad haha.

Obviously it works for some dogs. Sure, they miss their owners, but they’re friendly, like other dogs and people, and think they’re just on some fun adventure. Like I said, I worked in a kennel, I’ve known many, many,Β many,Β dogs like that. I’ve also known dogs like mine who don’t particularly like other dogs or people (it’s just a border collie thing. They have their family and they don’t care about anything else) and don’t understand why they’d ever get left behind. Dogs like that tend to be a pain in the ass at a kennel and don’t eat. I hope they don’t cause too much trouble. My dogs don’t listen to people the don’t know/like, so that could be a problem…but I just kinda foresee them being sad and pathetic the whole time they’re there and that just kinda makes me sad haha.

Like with our Florida trip last year, I’ll probably be posting our adventures here everyday. Not sure how that’s all gonna go down since Luke and I are really tight on cash right now and after gas to get there and back we’ll only have about $200 while we’re there.Β  So we probably won’t be doing much…

Anyway, I hope you had a fantastic week and are staying cool! Happy Sunday!

~Ashley
