Gobbler Grind 10k 11/10/19

Yes you read that correctly. 10k. Not half marathon. Hahaha I’ll get there, but first let’s start where we left off yesterday. πŸ˜‰

So after we finished the Longview half (which you can read all about here), Luke drove us to Garry Gribble’s so we could get our race packets since that running store is relatively close to the start/finish area of the Longview half. Well, it’s closer to there than it is to our house anyway. πŸ˜‚ So we went there, got our stuff, and then went to 5 Guys to eat because that’s our post-race tradition now!

After that we went back home, hung out at my house for a little bit, went to bed, and then got up at 5:30 am to do it all over again.

Except when we got up and started getting ready I wasn’t sure if we’d be able to do it all again. My hamstrings were tight and hurting but I do think of I would have paced myself properly I could have done it! But my dad is a less experienced runner and isn’t a good pacer. πŸ˜‚. But he said he was hurting 3 steps into the Longview half and the last 3 ish miles were a struggle for him. So I started thinking we needed to drop down to the 10k. Which I told him. But as we were getting ready he was adamant that we signed up for two half marathons so we were going to do two half marathons.

On the drive to the starting line (which Luke so graciously did again so we wouldn’t have to worry about it) I was still trying to convince him that this was a bad idea, but he wasn’t having it. So, we arrived at the starting area, parked, and walked (well my dad limped) to the port-o-potties.

Now, I absolutely love everything about this race, but my only real issue with it is that there are no where near enough port-o-potties for the amount of people who participate. We got there over and hour early so there was no line yet, but we knew from our experience last year that the line would get RIDICULOUSLY long and span most of the parking lot. So we used the facilities early and while we still could.

Anyway, once we were done I put my foot down and told my dad we were dropping to the 10k. I thought that one or even both of us would end up getting hurt if we attempted another 13.1 miles. So I walked to the packet pick up area and switched distances, so he kinda had to as well. πŸ˜‚ I think it was for the best though.

After getting our new bibs we walked back to the truck and hung out in there for a while since it was a chilly morning and we had arrived so early. By then the line for the port-o-potties was already super long and getting worse by the minute. There was no way we’d be able to use them again and actually start the race on time. And yet we continued to drink water and coffee. πŸ˜‚

With about 10 minutes until the race started we walked out to the starting corral but I had to pee REALLY bad. I decided I couldn’t wait so I walked into the woods, found a big tree off of the trail a ways, and peed there. I used to run on this particular trail EVERYDAY when I lived in an apartment near by, and I still go there to run every once in an while, so this definitely wasn’t the first time I’ve peed in that woods. πŸ˜‚ A few minutes later my dad did the same thing and THEN we went to line up in the starting corral.

A few minutes later we were off!! Not gonna lie, I was super stoked that we were only going 6 miles that day instead of 13. Plus I was very excited to be at another race! Especially since I don’t race very often. I mean, look at that smile! I was loving it!!

After the initial excitement of starting wore off we slowed down quite a bit. We were both feeling that half marathon from the day before. πŸ˜‚ Several spectators and race volunteers recognized us from the day before though so that was pretty cool!!

So the first few miles of this 10k were on the roads around Corporate Woods Park. So obviously there are big corporate buildings, some side walks and parking lots, and we were on the road and not the trail (yet) but it was still very pretty. Especially because of all of the fall colors!

After about 2.5 miles we turned onto the trail though. And this is the section of trail that I really did run or walk on every single day for 3 years and still often one back to. It’s not like being out in the woods somewhere secluded or anything like that, but it’s about as close as you can get in Overland Park, which is a huge city, so I’ve always been very fond of this trail and I very much enjoyed getting to do a race on it!

Anyway, for the second half of this 10k we finally settled into a good rhythm and what felt like a very consistent pace. We cheered on the other runners going the opposite direction and at this point and until the very end we never passed anyone but we were also never overtaken by anyone else. So that was just interesting.

At about mile 4.5 we turned around and started heading back the way we came, making our way closer and closer to the finish line! I think at that point my dad was very ready to be done, but I was in super high spirits and enjoying myself very much!

Finally the finish line was in sight! We sped up a little bit and finished with smiles on our faces! We got our medals and some post race cinnamon rolls and then wandered around a little bit to see what goodies they had to offer at all of the booths set up out there.

We got free bananas, chocolate milk, a mini ice pack, among a few other things. We also met the social media manager of the race which was super cool! She saw us out on the 10k course and cheered for us which of course we returned, but we didn’t know who she was. I thought it sounded like she recognized us and of course it turns out that she did! We interact quite often on instagram! I just didn’t know what she looked like because she runs the race’s Instagram page. But anyway we talked for a little bit and that was pretty cool!

Hahaha and one of the race photographers at the finish area also got several photos of of which I thought was neat! They even got Luke in one of them! πŸ˜„

And that was pretty much it! A little less exciting than the half marathon I guess, but I thought it was a lot more fun.

After we were done hanging out at the race we went to 5 Guys of course! It’s our post-race tradition after all!!

Then we headed back home. Luke headed out to go golfing but I stayed behind this time because my dad wanted to leave after he showered. So he did that, we packed up his truck, and he headed off to Illinois where he was going to meet my brother who had left in their camper that morning before we went of to our race. Our busy and fun filled weekend was officially over. Not gonna lie, after my dad left I spend a lot of time laying on my couch like this before I finally got up to shower and collect myself. πŸ˜‚

And thus ends the adventure of two races in two days. They weren’t both half marathons, but I think we made the right decision switching to the 10k. Plus back to back races are impressive no matter what the distances are!

Well, that’s that on that!

I’ve got a 5k coming up on Thanksgiving that in doing by myself and I think that’s gonna wrap up my racing for this year. It was a good one as far as race experiences go, I think!

An Update

It’s race week!!!

On Saturday my dad and I will be running the Longview Half in Grandview, Mo and then in Sunday we’ll be tackling the Gobbler Grind Half in Overland Park, KS!!

I am completely and overwhelming underprepared…πŸ˜‚

For the past 6 weeks I was hardly able to do any running let alone any actual training. My new job was absolutely beating the hell out of me and I got to the point where I wasn’t healing or recovering at all. My body was bruised and beaten down and every week just seemed to add more fatigue on top of it all. I was really hoping that I would end up adjusting to it all, but things just got progressively worse and worse and never really improved.

Cuts, scrapes, and bruises that just never seemed to go away.

At this point my wrist and hands have been red, swollen, and painful for weeks now. My hands and wrists are small, delicate, and have always been the weakest point of my body. And having to rip apart cat litter boxes ever 15 minutes just completely did them in. They even got to the point that they would throb with every step that I take when I’m running.

Instead of adjusting to the work the fatigue just seemed to pile up week after week. I literally couldn’t function when I would get home from my 12 hour shifts and on my days off I could barely get anything done. I tried to keep up with running, but mostly I just ended up cutting every run super short. Oh and my hair started falling out in clumps, so that’s cool.

Plus all of the dust in that place was just killing my asthmatic lungs. Your cat litter might say that it’s “low dust” but I can assure you that it’s not… Oh and we can’t forget this gem!

I know I probably sound like a whiny, ungrateful bitch right now but this was my reality for the past 6 weeks.

But last night I broke down and I quit my job at the cat litter factory. I just couldn’t do it anymore. I feel like I had to do it for my own physical and mental well being.

Honestly I don’t like having to admit that o couldn’t handle it. I’m not proud of how badly this job beat me down. I really did want it to work out. It was the best paying job that o could ever get, being uneducated and unskilled as I am. But the reality is that I just couldn’t handle it.

Plus on top of all of the physical stuff the blatant sexism and…I’m not sure what to call the “compliments” were really starting to get to me. I think it’s a little obvious that it’s mostly men who work jobs like this so it was mostly men that I worked with. The amount of times I got called a “pretty girl” was irritating, but what really pissed me off we’re comments like “you can’t stand around and look pretty all day when you work here” and “you can’t be pretty AND run the line at the same time”. Those were real, actual things that were said to me! They were meant to be jokes, I guess, but they sure didn’t feel that way. Ugh.

And yesterday a woman who works there who kind of took me under her wing told me the best thing I could do was keep my head down, do my job, and be careful what I say and who I say it to because the men there really do treat women differently. I really do appreciate her looking out for me, but hearing that was just a huge bummer on top of everything else…

So there you have it. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ I’m still looking for another job and hopefully I’ll end up working again soon, but at this point I’m just glad that I never have to step foot in that place again.

Anyway, back to race week stuff!!

So I’m hoping that I can get enough rest and recover enough that these half marathons don’t go too poorly. Although at this point I’ve accepted that they’re going to be very painful and we’re definitely going to be the party in the back for both half’s. Hahaha but at least my dad will be right there with me for them both, so I won’t be suffering alone! He’s been going through some shit as well and he hasn’t done any training either. πŸ˜‚ Oh well, we always have a lot of fun together, no matter what we’re doing. Like running a 10k in the mountains that I also was not prepared for. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Aaand to top it all off, I’m a little bit ill. Cool! πŸ™ƒ But I don’t feel as bad as I usually do when I’m sick so I’m hoping that continues to be the case! Or that I just start feeling better by this weekend! I’ve been chugging water with Nuun immunity tablets in it though and I like to think that’s helping! Even if it is just a placebo effect (which I don’t think it is. At least not entirely). My shitty immune system needs all of the help it can get, so hopefully between the Nuun, the no longer working at the cat litter factory, and all of the rest I plan on doing over the next few days help me get over this thing quickly!

Anyway, today I’ve been resting and relaxing and doing some light house work. Just trying to slowly catch up on all of the things that have fallen to the wayside over the past 6 weeks, ya dig? It was a good day, but my favorite part was not having to wake up at 4 am and getting to sleep in until 8, and then waking up to Finn laying on my feet and Dean cuddled up to my back. I think the dogs have missed me as much as I’ve missed spending time with them. They’re the best.

Alrighty, that’s all for today! But I can promise you I’ll be keeping this blog more up to date now that I’m not killing my self slowly by working at the Clorox plant anymore.

There Ain’t No Cure For The Summertime Blues

Hahaha I don’t actually have the summertime blues! I just couldn’t think of a title for this post and it seemed almost fitting. πŸ˜‰ We’ve been super busy here lately!! And unfortunately the past three-ish weeks have just not been good for me running-wise.

Between summer weather finally hitting us HARD (it was actually relatively mild up until the last week of June), a weird little niggle in my hip (which is gone now, thankfully!), one of my brother in laws staying with us (which isn’t a bad thing! I’m just a very routine oriented person and being out of my usual routine is a little difficult for me), preparing for and then celebrating Independence Day and Luke’s birthday, lots of treats and yummy, greasy, comfort/party food, alcohol consumption, and getting less sleep than usual, running has just kinda fallen to the back burner.

But I mean, these strawberry margaritas were definitely worth it. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚

I’m definitely not super stoked about that, but sometimes life happens and you’ve just gotta roll with it. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ And I’ve definitely been rolling with it! πŸ˜‚

But this week I really want to buckle down and get some shit done! There hasn’t been enough suffering in my life lately and boy do I miss it!! (Hahaha my fellow runners know what I’m talking about! πŸ˜‰). And obviously I’ve just missed running in general, even though I have been doing some! It’s just not been enough.

I’ve still got a few more interesting weeks ahead of me before things calm down around here though! Later today two of my sister in laws will be arriving here and then the younger one will be staying with us for the week along with her brother. Not gonna lie, I have no idea what I’m going to do with two teenagers in my house! My brother in law is pretty chill and we get along fine. But like a lot of brothers and sisters, these two don’t exactly get along great all of the time. I’m sure we’ll all be fine! It’s just going to be an interesting week! πŸ˜‚

We didn’t have a flag, so on the 4th we played the national anthem and all faced my brother in law’s shorts. πŸ˜‚

Then next weekend Luke and I are driving to Illinois to visit some other family (this will be after my brother and sister and law will be back home in Minnesota). Obviously that will be more fun, but I can never seem to fit in any running while we’re there. Not a big deal, at the very least I know it’s coming so I’ll be able to fit in my long run (which is the run I’m always the most worried about missing) in earlier that week.

So anyways, that’s what’s been going on with me! Lots of fun, but very little running. Hahaha I really need to get my ass back into gear though! Half marathon training officially (because I already feel like I’ve been training πŸ˜‰) starts this month and I am PUMPED! I’m going to be trying to tackle two half marathons in two days again this year (it didn’t end up happening last year, bummer). And this year my dad will be joining me for BOTH half’s!

Hahaha he’s going to have to get his ass into gear as well! He hasn’t been doing much running lately. He has been mountain biking quite a bit though, but obviously that’s not the same thing. Either way, I don’t think a time goal is going to be in place for either of these half’s for that very reason. But either way, we’ll still have fun!

But speaking of Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days: Take Two, I finally got around to hanging up some fliers with my ambassador discount code on them!

I’ve had my fliers for a while now, but I’ve been slacking a little bit. πŸ˜‚ But now I’ve got some hung up in several of the break rooms at the office Luke works at, the break room of the warehouse one of my brother in laws works at, a Panera, a dog park, and several on the Indian Creek Trail in Overland Park, KS! Yay!!

I’ve still got plenty more to hang up though. I need to hang some up around my town as well! I know there are several runners around here who also like to do local races (hahaha I’ve heard their names and the city their from announced at some of the local races I’ve been to!).

In full disclosure, if I get 5 people to use my code I get to do the half marathon for free! And obviously I’d love that! So far I know I’ve got two people registered with it. Possibly even all 5 already. One of my local Instagram friends posted a photo of one of my fliers on her running groups Facebook page and she said at least 4 people want to register for this race as a prep race for a marathon they’re trying for! So hopefully they do! Hahaha that would work out pretty well for several people, I think. Myself included obviously. πŸ˜‰

But more importantly, I’ve got training that I need to get done! And I’m definitely ready to get back to work! Getting back into it is probably going to suck pretty hard considering the general lack of any substance the small amount of running these last three weeks have had. But I feel very eager to get back to it, so bring it on!!

Anyway, that’s what’s going on with me right now!

I did wake up early (5 am. Ew. 🀒) and got 4 miles done this morning! So I’m off to a good start! Now I’ve got some stuff to do before my sister in laws get here this afternoon!

Happy Mail Day To Me!!

I’ve been watching this documentary series thing about the 90’s on Netflix and it’s been super entertaining/slightly nostalgia (I was born in ’91 so I only really remember the later 90’s). I’ve really been enjoying it aside from the fact that they barely even included Green Day their music episode. Dookie was literally one of the biggest albums of the 90’s. Especially coming out the year Kurt Cobain does. But whatever…I guess they almost made up for it by the amount of time they spent on Nirvana. Almost. And of course they ended the episode with Good Riddance playing in the background. ClichΓ©, but my little fan-girl heart was still happy to hear it. πŸ˜‚

Hi my name is Ashley and I’m the world’s biggest Green Day fan. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚

Oh man, anyway. This series has done exactly what it was probably meant to do, I suppose. It’s gotten me thinking of just how far we’ve come (and how far we haven’t come) as the human race. Like, 30 years ago the internet was barely even a thing but now we have access to it 24/7 via these relatively tiny devices that we carry with us in our pockets. Really it’s kinda mind blowing when you think of it!

At this point we can purchase basically anything we could possibly dream of and have it delivered to our front doors in just a few days. And once it is delivered we snap a photo with the small devices that give us access to the internet at all times and post about it on our social media accounts. And thus, the whole “mail day” social media thing began. Pretty crazy, right?! πŸ˜‚

So I revived two packages today! The first one came via the good ol’ USPS this morning and I wasn’t exactly expecting it. That’s always a good feeling, right?! 😁 The second was delivered via FedEx (dude, don’t even get me started on all of the delivery options we have today! And how much that’s grown, especially with Amazon and drones and people renting out vans just to deliver stuff. Holy moly!!πŸ˜‚). That one I was expecting, tracking, and highly anticipating! πŸ˜‰

So, our regular mail actually comes super duper early in the morning. Around 8-9 am, which has always kinda blown my mind. Back when I lived in Illinois it always came around 3-4 pm. But I guess that’s the difference between living in town, almost across the street from the post office and on a farm in the middle of nowhere. πŸ˜‚ Anyway, today I got the mail as usual, whatever. But there was a package in there addressed to me from a local running store! Yay!! I wasn’t really expecting it (even though I was promised this stuff) but I knew exactly what it was and was pretty stoked about it!

My ambassador stuff from the Gobbler Grind Half finally came!! Hahaha back in February I was accepted as an ambassador for the Gobbler Grind and was promised some apparel and flyers basically in exchange for free advertising (which really is all any ambassador program is πŸ˜‰). They said “a few weeks” but I guess that turned into “a few months”. I’m not complaining or anything though. I’ve never organized a race so I have no idea what all goes into that, but I’m sure the race director and everyone is is pretty busy all year. Planning this race and more likely than not a few others. Really all that waiting did was turn it into a pleasant surprise because I had almost forgotten about it. πŸ˜‚

But anyway, now I’ve got a sweet Gobbler Grind t-shirt, some flyers to hand out, and another buff! It’s so funny actually, I’ve been saying I needed a buff for a while but I never ended up getting myself one. But now I’ve gotten two for “free”. One at the Desert Rats 10k earlier this month and now this one that came with my Gobbler Grind stuff! Pretty sweet! Also just a weird coincidence that I’ve been talking about wanting one and now I’ve got two. πŸ˜‚

Now that I’ve got some flyers I need to figure out what to do with them! In all transparency, if I get 5 people to register for this race using my code (GG19AD) I get a free entry! I’ve already got one person to use it so only 4 more to go! Anyone wanna help a girl out? πŸ˜‰ It’s a super fun race!! Plus I’m really hoping to meet some of my online friends there! How super cool would that be?!? 😁

But anyway, for now I’m going to give a couple to my husband to hang up at his work. Apparently a bunch of people there are runners so that’s probably a good place to start! I’m also thinking my local grocery store? I live in a super small town so basically everyone who lives here shops there, even if it’s just occasionally. And I know there are some runners around here. I mean, I see them while I’m out running! πŸ˜„

I really do love this race though. That was the whole reason I even applied to be an ambassador for it. So far it’s probably one of the best races I’ve ever done! So even if I can’t get 4 more people to register I’m still going to do it! I still can’t get over how awesome the aid station volunteers were last year. They were literally THE BEST! So I’m very excited to be doing this half marathon again this year! And with my dad, too! 😁

Anyway, at around 12:30 pm a very nice FedEx driver dropped off my Honey Stinger order! Yay!! A couple of days ago I did some restocking of my running fuel! Of course that meant Honey Stinger waffles!! They are my go-to running fuel. They also make good snacks. πŸ˜‰ So I got a box of my favorite flavor; chocolate. I’ve also been enjoying the lemon flavored waffles as well, so I got a box of those too. Plus a box of cracker n’ nut butter bars because yum!! πŸ˜‹ And a “variety pack” which is just a box of different flavors of waffles, a few chews, bars, and cracker n’ nut butter bars.

Now I’ll be set on that front for a while. 😁 Probably for at least most of the summer. Training for Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days: Take Two officially starts in a few months and I definitely want to be ready for that! πŸ˜„

And speaking of that, guess who I’ve officially convinced to take on this challenge with me?!?!

Hahaha yup! It’s official! My dad is signed up for both races and is going to tackle them with me! Yay!! We have lots of fun racing together! Actually, at this point everything single race I’m doing this year I’ll be doing with him. That is unless I end up registering for another race, but right now that’s kinda unlikely. It’s all good though! Two half marathons, one 10k, and one 5k is more than I’ve done in other years.πŸ˜„

Upcoming Adventures

Things have been kinda quite around here lately! Aside from some chicken drama we haven’t really had much going on since Christmas time. That’s going to change here very shortly though! This spring is going to be a busy one and I’m pretty excited about sone of the things that are going to go down and the adventures that are going to be had!

First on my list is my upcoming trip to Colorado! That’s this week actually!

So currently, the plan is my brother is driving here from Illinois to pick me up and bring me to Colorado with him (Luke and I only have one vehicle and obviously he’ll need that to go to and from work, so this was the option that worked best for everyone). I’m not sure what my dad has planned for the week, but on Saturday we’re going to be driving from Longmont to Fruita (about a 5 hour drive) and then do some hiking there. Then we’re going to stay at a motel there and then on Sunday is the Desert Rats 10k trail race that we’re doing together. After that my dad and I will head back to Kansas where obviously I live and he might stay the night, and then he needs to to take care of some stuff in Illinois so that kinda works out well for him.

We’re planning on squeezing in as much fun as possible in the short amount of time I’m there and I’m sure we will! I’m very much looking forward to spending some more time in Colorado. 😊

Next on the agenda is the Running With The Cows 5k! I’ve done this race twice now and I absolutely love it! One day I’ll end up doing the half marathon. Once I get over my fear of racing in warm weather. πŸ˜‚

So this is coming up on May 11th and my dad is doing this one with me as well!

I’m not sure when he plans on coming here from Colorado for that, but no matter when he does I’m sure we’ll end up having lots of fun! 😊

Running With The Cows 5k, 2018

Later in May one of my brother-in-laws graduates from high school so Luke and I will be driving to Minnesota for that! We’ve been going on vacations in the summer with Luke’s mom’s side of the family so we actually haven’t even been up to Minnesota since 2015! Crazy stuff!!

So aside from celebrating the new high school grad I’m not sure what all is going down while we’re there but I’m sure it will involve some fun stuff! Last time we were there we went to Itasca State Park. That was super cool! Especially for a group of people who all used to (and a couple still do) live near the Mississippi in Illinois!

Unfortunately no running events will be taking place while we’re in Minnesota. Hahahaha that would have been fun though! Maybe I’ll look up some races and see if I can swing one while we’re there. πŸ˜‰ honestly though there probably won’t be time for that.

Itasca State Park, October 2015

Alrighty, so those are the big ones coming up soon! Of course we’ve got all sorts of smaller adventures along the way. Like starting our garden for instance. Now that spring is finally here we’ll be getting that started soon! I’m very excited about that. I wanna grow ALL OF THE THINGS! πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯¬πŸ“πŸ₯¦πŸ‘πŸŽƒ

And I’m sure at some point we’ll be making our way back to Illinois again. Another of my brother-in-laws girlfriend just had their baby on March 19th. That’s kind of a whole thing, but I’m sure Luke’s dad will convince him to come meet her before too long. I mean, she is our first…”official” (for lack of a better term.) niece.

Hahaha Luke’s whole side of the family is a little bit confusing and I’m not about to get into all of that here. But we do already have a couple of nephews and a niece on his mom’s side. They just aren’t directly related to Luke. But this new baby is like for reals related to him. So “official” sure. But not our first niece or nephew or relative of that sort. πŸ˜‚

Anyway, right now that covers the majority of the races I’m doing this year. For now. There’s always the possibility that more might be added to the schedule though. πŸ˜‰

But for now there are only two other races on tap for 2019; the Longview Half and the Gobbler Grind Half, which I’ll be doing with my dad again. Jeez I’m beginning to think he likes this whole racing thing! 😁 I’m currently trying to convince him to do Longview with me too, but that one is the day before the Gobbler Grind. Yeah, I’m trying that again. πŸ˜‚ But anyway, he’ll be coming back to Kansas again for that. We had an absolute blast running it last year!

So, will I be seeing any of you guys there on November 10th?!?

This is such a fun race held in Overland Park Kansas! I can’t say that the whole course is super pretty because it is in a pretty big city and I ain’t a about that life, but a lot of the course is on a super pretty paved trail that follows a nice little creek. I actually used to run on parts of the course all of the time back when Luke and I lived in an apartment in Overland Park so I thought that was super cool!!

And don’t even get me started on the volunteers! They were the best!!

Thursday Things

Hello friends!!

I’ve been kinda slacking on the whole blogging thing, I know. Honestly I’ve been super focused on growing my Instagram account lately. Instagram sure isn’t making that easy thanks to it’s weird algorithms. But I have been making some progress on that front! 😁

Instagram is lots of fun. And if you do it right it can also become a community of some really awesome and supportive people! I love the community I’ve become apart of on Instagram! But story telling, sharing thoughts, ideas, even just random ramblings is a lot easier to do on a blog! I mean, people come to blogs expecting to read! That’s not exactly the case on Instagram. A lot of people are there just to look at pretty pictures. Which is totally fine! It can just be a little bit limiting sometimes.

So I definitely want to get more back into blogging!! I know I’m not the best writer out there or anything, but lately I’ve been writing down these little…well I’m bot sure what to call them exactly. Poems? I don’t think that’s right… Anyway, I’ve shared a few of them on Instagram and I’ve gotten some very positive feedback from them and that’s just made me want to start writing and sharing more again on my blog! 😊

So I figured I’d start easy and go for a “Thursday Things” post. I like to ramble and my “Thursday Things” posts are usually a pretty good place for me to do that! 😊

So let’s get right into it!

Team ROAD iD!

Obviously I’ve already talked about being an ambassador for ROAD iD his year (which you can read about here. πŸ˜‰). I’m super duper excited to be working with a brand that I love and believe in the way I do ROAD iD. I’ve been wearing mine since 2015 and at this point I rarely ever take it off.

Last weekend I received my welcome package for team ROAD iD. They sent all of their Team ROAD iD members a bunch of fun goodies! And check this out! How awesome is the box it all came in! πŸ˜„

I was very excited about that hahaha. I’m also very excited about the neat-o things said box contained; more bands for my ROAD iD and a new badge for it, a t-shirt, stickers, a super sweet Thule backpack (I’ve needed a new backpack for a while now!), and a bunch of gift cards! I used one of the gift cards to get my dad a new faceplate fit his ROAD iD since the info on his wasn’t up to date, but the rest of then will be used in giveaways!! Probably on Instagram, but I might do one on here as well. I’m still trying to figure out how I wanna do all of that. But it’s coming soon so be on the lookout for that!

I’m very excited about the prospects of hosting a giveaway! I’ve never done one before but I’ve always wanted to, and now I’ve got the perfect opportunity to host one! 😊 Like I said though, I’m still working out the details, but I expect to be doing one next month!

Okey dokey, enough about that! Let’s talk about running!

Last week I had an AMAZING week of running! It was soooo good! Like, most of my runs felt great and I had so much fun! It’s been a while since I’ve had a whole week like that. where most of it just felt fun and carefree even though I was putting in some hard work.

Unfortunately all of that fun came to an end this week…

I almost did it. I almost made it through cold and flu season without getting sick. Almost. On Monday I felt a little bit tired and my body was kinda heavy feeling, but I thought that maybe I was just tired from the work I’d put in last week. I did a super slow 3 mile slog on the treadmill (because it felt like -15 and I didn’t feel like dealing with that. πŸ˜‚), in hopes that I would feel better afterwards, but nope.

I woke up on Tuesday and my whole body felt sore. At that point I was at a loss as to why. So I skipped my run and spent an hour on my stationary bike instead and then followed that up with about 30 minutes of yoga. I was hoping that would help with the soreness, but honestly I felt worse afterwards than I did before, which I thought was weird.

But then I woke up actually feeling sick yesterday and it all kinda made sense after that. πŸ˜‚ So yeah, that sucks, but at least I know why I’ve felt off all week. I took a rest day yesterday and woke up feeling a little bit better today, but not 100%, so I took today off as well. I was doing so well and being super consistent with my running since the beginning of this year, so it’s kind of a bummer to have to stop that for now, but I also know that it’s definitely for the best and the thing I need most right now is rest.

But if I was gonna get sick now wasn’t the worst time to do it. πŸ˜‚ My first race of the year, a trail 10k in Colorado, is next month and I obviously want to be healthy for that!!

I’m doing that one with my dad who hasn’t really been able to train due to work, and since it’s in Colorado near the mountains the elevation change is gonna kick my ass. It always does. So it’s going to be a tough day for us and we aren’t exactly going to be “racing”. Especially since I’ve done exactly 0 trail runs in preparation for this.πŸ˜‚ Honestly I’m hoping to rely on the skills I’ve built in the first 20 years of my life tracking around the woods and family farm. So at the very least I’m not a complete stranger to a little bit of off road terrain! Hahaha but we’ll see how that actually goes!

Honestly while it’s probably going to be slow and painful, it should still be a lot of fun! My dad and I have had lots of fun during the two other races we’ve done together so far, so I don’t think this one will be any different. 😊

Then in May my dad is coming to Kansas to do Running With The Cows 5k (one of my all time favorite races!) with me, and he’ll be doing the Gobbler Grind Half with me again in November! 😊 So far that’s all of the racing I’ll be doing this year. Although I would like to register for another 5k or two later this year, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to make that happen yet. Mostly I want to because I’ve got done time goals I’m aiming for and I won’t be able to go after then running with my dad. Which is totally fine! I’d much rather get to spend more time with him that hit a PR. But I’d still like to end up with a shiny new PR this year. πŸ˜‚

Honestly I can do a fast 5k anytime I want on my usual running routes. That should be easy enough and I’m not the kind of person who only counts PR’s if they happen within a race. But the half marathon time I’m shooting for might be a little more difficult. Depending on how things go during the Gobbler Grind this fall, that might have to wait until next spring. Assuming I can get in another half then that is. We shall see.

But to back track a little bit, I’m currently nursing a cold and haven’t run in 3 days. πŸ˜‚ But really 3 days off isn’t too bad. I’ll be able to jump back into the swing of things pretty easily if that’s all I end up missing. Which I’m thinking it will be. I’m gonna test out my legs and lungs tomorrow with 2 or 3 easy miles just to see how I feel and then go from there!

But I think that’s enough for today!
