My Most Important Pieces Of Running Gear

Alrighty my friends! Do me a favor; quickly scroll through this list and then come back here…

Done?

Ok. πŸ˜„

Notice anything missing from this list? Running shoes, right? I mean, aren’t those literally the most important piece of running gear after all? And then after that a good sports bra, right?

Both of those things are super important, but here’s the thing, we all know that at this point! I mean, look at Runner’s World. At this point the magazine is 90% shoe ads. I stopped subscribing after they got a new editor and chief, but I’ve heard it’s just been going downhill ever since. But they aren’t the only company constantly telling us that we need shoes. Shoes shoes shoes shoes. Runners need their running shoes! Alright. We get it!

But I personally believe that finding the right running shoe for yourself is a very personal thing. Everyone’s feet, body, running stride, etc, are different. Therefore the perfect running shoe for someone else might be an injury waiting to happen for you!

So yes, maybe do a little bit of research before buying a pair of running shoes, but the best possible thing you can do is try on a variety of brands and styles. Run around in them a little bit at the store, and then just kinda hope that they’ll end up working for you. And if not, try again. I know that sounds like a lot of trial and error, but I really believe that’s the best way to figure out what’s going to work the best for you. You can also go to a reputable and trustworthy running specialty store, but take whatever they tell you with a grain of salt. Yes, they want to help you, but at the end of the day no one knows your feet and your body like you do.

Also if you have a particular shoe that works for you, don’t let anyone convince you that you’re wrong! I’m looking at you, people who say you can’t run long distances in Nike Frees!!

And don’t even get me started on sports bras. There is a lot wrong with that particular part of the athletic wear industry right now. I can’t find anything that isn’t super heavy duty that feels like you’re clipping yourself into a straight jacket, that has no pads or underwire (I get why some people like padded sports bras, but I hate them), or that had a bottom band that digs into and chafes the rib cage. I’ve seen women who end up bleeding pretty badly from these terrible sports bra bands. Nike used to make THE PERFECT sports bra for me, but they don’t anymore and I’m so freaking pissed! It’s been YEARS since I’ve had a sports bra that was actually comfortable…

But anyway. That’s why sports bras are also not on this list.

Hahaha oh wow. I really didn’t mean for that to turn into a rant like that. It just kinda happened. πŸ˜‚ But really I think someone needed to say it.

So, let’s get into a more positive track, shall we?

Obviously I’ve got a bone to pick with certain areas of the running gear/athletic wear industry, but there are actually quite a few brands and products out there that I love, trust, and believe in! Which is great because obviously running gear is fun! But it can also make or break your workout (I’m looking at you, terrible sports bras!), help you keep track of your training, progress, time, mileage, mile splits, or whatever, keep you comfortable in certain weather conditions, help keep you safe, provide you with a little extra piece of mind, or just make you feel like a total badass. Which is also super important!

So, today I wanted to share what I would consider to be my most important pieces of running gear. Obviously if asked, most runners would give you different answers as to what their most important gear is because we’re all different and need and want different things! How awesome is that?! 😊 But for me, these are a few of the things I just can’t live without when it comes to running.

ROAD iD

Safety first, my friends!!

My ROAD iD contains my name, birth year, blood type, and emergency contact. All things that could definitely come in handy in case of an emergency. Plus having all of that right on my wrist means I don’t have to carry my ID or anything else with me while I run, which is nice. πŸ˜„

At this point I WILL NOT run without my ROAD iD. Heck, I rarely ever take it off! It just gives me so much peace of mind knowing that if something were to ever happen to me my husband would be contacted right away. I seriously think everyone should have one!

(PS if you don’t have one yet, you can follow my special link to get you one and save 20% on your order. πŸ˜‰)

Garmin Fenix 5

I am a run by feel kinda gal, so I actually don’t pay a lot of attention to or get distracted by the paces that my Garmin is constantly providing me. Which is a problem that some people run into on occasion and something that can become a bit of an issue.

But, since it’s not a problem for me I always run wearing my Garmin Fenix 5. It’s a super fancy GPS watch and I do enjoy all of the data it can provide me, the biggest thing I’m looking for is my mileage. Yup, I’m the kind of person who can’t end a run at 4.8 miles even if I’m standing right in front of my house (and even though I know that GPS watches aren’t 100% accurate). But keeping track of my mileage is super important to me. It’s how I know if I’m being consistent and actually working hard instead of just phoning it in. Some people can measure that with time, but I prefer miles. Everything else that my Fenix 5 can do is just an added bonus. πŸ˜„

Oiselle Pocket Jogger Capris

You guys, the pants CHANGED MY LIFE!!!!!

I know that’s a little dramatic. πŸ˜‚ But seriously, the amount of pockets on running gear is too damn low!! I don’t need to carry much with me on my runs, but at the very least I like a pocket that my phone will fit in along with a few other pockets that I can keep fuel and chapstick in. But I literally never had that until these pants came into my life. I LOVE them. Now I just need to get the Pocket Jogger Shorts! Not one pair of my running shorts contains enough pockets.

I do have photos of my pair of pocket jogger capris, but they aren’t as good as this one from Oiselle’s website. πŸ˜‰

Trucker Hats

Oh trucker hats! Where would I be without you?!?

Gagging and choking on my hair, and constantly trying to keep my bangs out of my eyes, probably. πŸ˜‚

Trucker hats are an absolute MUST for me during the warmer months. I have what I affectionately refer to as a “choppy hair cut”. There are multiple layers, bangs, it’s kinda long, messy, and nothing is the same length. It can be hard to contain. πŸ˜‚ Even braids and headbands can’t keep it all out of my way. But trucker hats help without holding in too much heat thanks to their mesh backs. Plus I like to have some kind of brimmed hat anyway to keep the sun/wind/rain/who knows what out of my eyes if need be. πŸ˜„

Moisture Wicking Socks

Honestly the brand and style don’t matter much to me. Sometimes I wear compression socks. Sometimes I don’t. As long as my socks keep me feet from getting too sweaty and gross then I’m good to go!

The thing is, one time in my early days as a runner I forgot to switch into moisture wicking socks. It was a miserable experience for my poor, sweaty feet and I have never and probably will never make that same mistake again. I always double check my feet before I hit the pavement, just to be sure that I did indeed put on a pair of my running socks. πŸ˜‚

I’m a simple girl with simple needs. Aside from my Garmin I really don’t have any super duper fancy gear. Obviously there is nothing wrong with having the latest/expensive/technologically advanced/super spiffy gear. But I like to remind people that while all of that stuff can be fun, you really don’t need much to start running. That’s one of the cool things about this sport! It really doesn’t take fancy equipment. You just need a pair of shoes that work for you and whatever allows you to move comfortably over however many miles you want to cover.

Alrighty! That’s all from me for now!

What running gear can’t you live without? I’d love to hear your answers!

But for now I’ll wish you happy Monday and a wonderful new week!!

Training For β€œOperation Two Half Marathons In Two Days” Begins Today!

img_3519

I’ve been trying to figure out just exactly what I wanted to call this training cycle. Haha is that weird? Last year I went with “Half Marathon Training Round Three” but that wasn’t exactly going to work this time around, so after some thinking I figuredΒ β€œOperation Two Half Marathons In Two Days” worked just fine! πŸ˜‰

But yeah, my training plan officially begins today! I am Kicking off this training cycle with a rest day, as is pretty usual with the Garmin training plans that I use haha. I’m ok with that though. Mostly because I basically forgot this was coming up until some point yesterday evening. That’s my bad. πŸ˜‚ I guess being in vacation mode for most of the week kinda threw me off but it’s all good! At least I’ve got today to start to mentally prepare for all of the training that’s coming my way. πŸ˜‰ Especially since I did absolutely no running while we were in Branson. The little town our cabins were in seemed super sketchy and I didn’t feel safe going anywhere alone, let alone running several miles by myself. And it turns out it was a super sketchy place because we ended up getting some fishing gear (along with a leatherman’s tool that my grandpa gave me…) stolen. So it was probably a good decision not to run there.

But while we were there I did get a new pair of running shoes at the Nike outlet store, so at least there’s that! The pair of Free’s that I had been running in were getting super worn out and were pretty much at the end of their running life, so they’ve officially become my new everyday shoes. And the pair of Free’s that were my everyday shoes got thrown away. They served my very well, first as running shoes and then as everyday shoes, but they were basically ripping to shreds and it was long past time to get rid of them.

img_3513

From left to right; my new running shoes, my now everyday shoes, and the shoes I finally threw away. Haha it’s hard to tell in this photo, but they were in rough shape.

I think it’s pretty exciting to kick off a new training cycle with a new pair of shoes! And of course I’ve still got my Nike Pegasus to run in as well. I like to have at least two pairs of shoes to rotate between. So now I’m all set on that front!

Anyway, getting into half marathon training mode should be interesting, considering that I haven’t done a whole lot of running this month. Between the heatwave and our family vacation I just haven’t really been feeling it. But the weather has gotten a little less hot, our vacation is done, and I’m feeling ready to get this show on the road! So things are kicking off with an easy 3 miler tomorrow and we’ll just see how that goes! πŸ™‚ I’ve learned a lot training for and then completing my first 3 half’s, so now that I’m armed with that knowledge I’m pretty confident for this training cycle. Well, I’m also a bit terrified because I’m running two half’s in two days, and I’d be very confident if I was just doing one, orΒ  a couple a few months or weeks apart. But all in all I’m pretty exciting to see how this all goes!

Okey dokey then! Getting back into the swing of things and back into running. I’m ready to go! Bring it on!

~Ashley

Weekly Recap: April 16th-22nd, 2018

I was still sick for a good portion of this week, but I definitely started to feel better and was pretty much recovered from this illness by the end of the week which was awesome! And bonus, I was able to do pretty much all of the running I wanted to accomplish. It was mostly slow and kinda boring stuff and some of it got cut a little shorter than I wanted, but hey, it was a vast improvement over last week and I will gladly take that! πŸ™‚

Monday:

  • 3 easy miles

Marathon Monday. Wow! Still can’t get over Des Linden’s win at the Boston Marathon! That was just incredible!

So since I spent the whole morning watching the Elite coverage of the Boston Marathon, I didn’t end up running until around 12:30 that afternoon. That wasn’t a big deal, but it felt kinda weird haha. I like to get my running done and out of the way first thing in the morning that way I don’t have to worry about it throughout the day. Anyway, just did an uneventful 3 miles on Monday. After that I had to take care of all of the things I neglected to do since I spent so much time watching TV haha.

Tuesday:

  • 5 miles

I was still feeling kinda bleh on Tuesday and had originally only planned to do 2-3 miles because I sill wasn’t feeling great. But it seemed like the more I ran the better I felt, so I ended up doing 5 haha. It wasn’t exactly fun and I spent a lot of time coughing and wiping my nose, but I’m glad I did it. πŸ™‚

img_1100

Wednesday:Β

  • 3 miles with a couple strides thrown in for fun
  • 20 minutes of yoga/foam rolling

I was finally starting to feel better by Wednesday! Not at 100% but still, I was very happy with the improvement and it showed during my run! It was hard, but fun hard and not I’m still sick and feel like I’m dying, which I will gladly take! After my run I spent over 2 hours cleaning out our spare bedroom where the chickens had lived until Tuesday night when we finally moved them into the coop. That was an adventure in and of itself! Wednesday was a good day and you can read more about it here. πŸ˜‰

img_1123

Thursday:

  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 30 minutes of yoga

Cross training is a necessary evil as far as I’m concerned. I don’t particularly enjoy doing it, I usually find it to be boring, but I know it’s good for me. So I do it. Sometimes hahaha. But by Thursday I was feeling sooooo much better! Still probably not 100% better, I still had a cough, but for the most part I was feeling pretty good! πŸ™‚

Friday:

  • 2.5 miles

Friday was an interesting day. Started off with a run as usual. I warmed up with what was supposed to be a nice and easy mile, but my new favorite band finally released their new album the night before so obviously I had to listen to that while I ran. I new that was a bad idea but I did it anyway haha. New music makes me a happy camper. But it also makes me go out waaaay too fast during my warm up and then that tends to make the rest of the workout a huge suffer fest. Luckily it was a short on on Friday though haha. After my “warm up” I did some cadence drills (about a mile of ’em πŸ™‚ ) and then cooled down with a little more easy running. Like I said, it was kinda a huge suffer fest, but it was also pretty fun!

And just for some clarification; I’ve been joking about The Longshot being my new favorite band for a while now (if you know me then you know I’m the biggest Green Day fangirl in ALL THE LAND!). But the thing is, it’s literally just another side band that the front man for Green Day has come up with. So its pretty much just Green Day with a few different people. Haha I still thing it’s fucking great though and I absolutely love their album. Hence the going out too fast during my warm up on Friday. πŸ˜‰

Anyways, on Friday evening my brother-in-law, his girlfriend, and her two kids came over to our house to hang out. And so did one of my neighbor’s and her kid (the one who likes to come over and hang out with me). So for some reason all of the small children (they were 7, 4, and 3 years old) all flocked to me, fought for my attention, and over who got to sit in my lap. Small children terrify me. Haha so not sure why they all wanted to be my friend (well, except for my neighbor, like I said, she likes hanging out with me). So that went on for several hours and was exhausting. I passed out right away when I finally went to bed that night.

img_1157

Saturday:

  • 5.58 miles

Saturday’s are usually my long run day. So the original plan was to do 8 miles. But between getting over an illness, going a little too hard during my workout on Friday, and then having 3 young children all over me the night before I was kinda worn out and just not feeling it. After about 2 miles I just started laughing at myself and was like “yeah, 8 miles definitely isn’t gonna happen today.” Then at about 3 miles I got chased to two little demon dogs that were running around unleashed in a non-fenced in front yard. Once the took off after me the followed my for a little bit, so I stopped and looked back to their house to see if their owner was out. She was, but she was just throwing her hands in the air, then covering her face, and I’m pretty sure she started crying… Like, I get that your dogs running off is a frustrating situation, but freaking out like that isn’t going to do anyone any good. Plus those little assholes were trying to bite at my ankles and I wasn’t about to try to catch them and bring them back to her. As far as I’m concerned that’s not my problem (and remember this is coming from the person who has caught and returned several dogs to their owners while out running). Ugh, I’ve grown to despise people who let their dogs run after people like that, then act like it’s the person who the dogs are chasing’s fault. Like, I’m on a public road. The law says that I can be here. And the law also says that your dogs can’t be out in public like that without a leash. Therefore, not my problem.

As someone who goes to great lengths to train her dogs not to do shit like that, and follow all the laws that pertain to dogs, I find it super frustrating when other people don’t. And then throw a fit whenever they let their dogs get into a potentially dangerous situation and are chasing/trying to bite a random passerby.

Anyway, I was in a standoff with those two dogs for several minutes, and had to resort to growling at them to keep them from coming close enough to bite me (usually a firm “no!” does the trick, but that didn’t work this time). Eventually some kid in a truck drove by and that distracted them long enough for me to get away. I’m not sure what happened to them after that, but again, not my problem.

After that it took me another 2 ish miles to loop back around to my house and once I got there I was just done. That was enough excitement for me that day. Oh well, aside from being chased by 2 little dogs (and can we just take a second to acknowledge that smaller dogs breeds are much more aggressive than most medium/large dog breeds?), I was happy with what I got done on Saturday. πŸ™‚

img_1183

Sunday:

  • rest day

And a well earned one, I think!!

Total Weekly Mileage: 19.20

Between getting over an illness and all of the shenanigans that happened this week, I still got shit done!! All things considered, I got a decent amount of miles in and got a tiny bit of cross training and stretching done. All in all, I felt like I had a productive week. And my Garmin is telling me that I’ve been productive, so go me!! πŸ™‚

I hope you’ve had a good week and a fun weekend!

Until next time,

Totally Rad Wednesday

Is anyone else a little bit obsessed with all of the gifs for the stories on Instagram? Because I kinda am. πŸ˜‚

It has in fact, been a totally rad day though! I got so much done!! Haha I still have a piss ton of other stuff I need to do though. My brother-in-law, his girlfriend, and her kids are coming over at some point this weekend (and fingers crossed my brother-in-law will finally take all of the shit that he left in our spare bedroom when he moved out 9 months ago. Oh did I mention he never told us he was moving out? He didn’t even pack up his shit or anything. Just left a huge mess for Luke and I to clean up. Which we did. We even boxed up his stuff for him.), and my house is kinda of a disaster haha. I’ve got a pretty decent start on things though! But before I got to any of that, of course I had to get my run in. πŸ˜‰

Spring has finally made it’s way back to Kansas, so oh boy is it windy! That made running a little more difficult than it normally would have been, but holy cow did I have fun! I basically did a quality workout with a couple of strides thrown in at the end and it was a lot of fun! It was pretty hard too, but in a good way and not in the I’m still sick and feel like I’m dying way, which was nice. And I am still kinda sick, but today has been a vast improvement and I could definitely tell during my run. πŸ™‚

img_1123

My peach tree is blooming and looks super pretty right now, so obviously I had to take my very Instagram-y post-run Garmin photo with it in the back ground. πŸ˜‰

It was a really good run! Afterwards I was full of energy and ready to tackle my big project of the day; cleaning out the spare bedroom. That’s where the rabbits, ferrets (although they had to be temporarily moved) live, and where we had been keeping the chickens in their brood box. The thing is, they had not been staying in the brood box. They’ve basically had full run of that room for about two weeks now. Luke and I wanted to move them out of the house and into their coop when that started happening but it was still really cold out and they were still to young to be out in the cold like that without a heat lamp or something, but if we had done that they wouldn’t of had much room in their nesting area and it probably would have ended up getting too hot for them anyway. But anyway, it’s finally starting to warm up again but more importantly they have all of their feathers now, so last night the chickens graduated to their coop.

At night they have to be locked in the nesting area (so they’ll be quite and for their own safety), so that’s where they spent the night and then this morning when we woke up Luke opened the door to the outside portion of their coop but they didn’t make their way down there until a little after 2 pm haha. But once they got down there they pecked and scratched and the dirt to their little chicken heart’s content, and once they got tired of that (and probably a little bit cold in the wind) they made their way back into the nesting area. So this transition has gone just about as well as it could have and they seem pretty happy to be outside! But that still left the spare bedroom to be cleaned…

Oh man, was is a mess in there! There was wood shavings, chicken feed, feathers, and poop everywhere. And I’m pretty sure the poor rabbits were getting annoyed with the chickens just roaming around that room. The last couple of days they had taken to roosting on top of poor Runes cage. I’m sure she wasn’t a fan of that.

Anyway, I swept, mopped, scrubbed, vacuumed, and mopped the floor again in there. I also cleaned both rabbit cages while I was at it, because why not. Haha plus Rune likes to chase the broom while I’m sweeping and weirdly enough likes the vacuum. Daisy is not a fan of either of those things though, so she stayed safely in her cage while Rune got to run around and help me clean for 2 hours hahaha.

Yeah, that first photo isn’t even a “before” photo. It was a “I’m almost done” photo. It was bad… Rune was having fun though haha. There is still some chicken poop stuck to the floor. Kinda gross, I know, but I’m gonna need a putty knife or something to scrape it off with, so Luke’s gonna get me one on his way home from work. Still though, its a vast improvement! πŸ™‚ I’m very glad that the chickens are finally outside in their coop. Won’t have to worry about having a huge mess like that anymore. Also, just ignore those blinds. My brother-in-law’s dog tore them up, along with the screen in the other window, because my brother-in-law just left him behind and didn’t even come get him until 4 months after he’d moved out and Luke told him he had to take him. Apparently after he abandoned his dog a bunch of people were telling him that was a shitty thing to do, but it still took him 4 freaking months to come get him…I’m just he’s finally gone. My dogs did not like my brother-in-law’s dog at all.

And just for the record, I don’t just leave the rabbits in dog crates without any sort of bedding. I keep several old sheets in their cages and the both like to dig and tunnel in them. They were just in the washer when I took this photo haha.

Another project Luke and I want to start is fixing up our rabbit hutch (it’s in bad shape so I can’t use it) and maybe even building another one. Our rabbits don’t get along so they can’t be housed together… I like being able to leave them outside in the hutch when the weather is nice, but can’t really do that at the moment. So for now the rabbits are stuck inside. Hahaha luckily they aren’t as messy as the chickens though!

Whew! After doing all of that I was pretty beat! Cleaning up the chicken mess was a lot of work and I had done a relatively hard workout before hand! So once I was done cleaning I showered, ate lunch, and took and hour long nap. That was nice. πŸ™‚

After that I worked on a few blog posts, did a little bit of yoga, and then got some more cleaning done. Not a lot, but hey, it was something. πŸ˜‰

I’m just feeling pretty great all-in-all. We’re (hopefully) finally getting my brother-in-law’s shit out of our house and finally moving on from the whole all around terrible experience of him living with us for 2 years, I got a lot done today, my peach tree is blooming,Β  I’m finally starting to get over this cold/upper respiratory thing both Luke and I have had for a week now, he says he’s starting to feel better too πŸ™‚ , and I had a great run.

Weekly Recap: September 18th-24th, 2017

Monday:

  • Rest day

I was feeling kinda off on Monday. It was kinda weird, I was just feeling super tired and run down. Haha weird because I haven’t been doing much running, but whatever. My body was telling my to rest, so rest I did. πŸ™‚ Also, my Zensah gear got here on Monday! Yay!! I’ve only worn the compression sleeves a few times but I already love them! And the bra is pretty comfortable too. πŸ™‚

img_6502

Tuesday:

  • 40 minutes on the stationary bike

Ugh I probably should have tried another short run on Tuesday, but I just wasn’t feeling it. Haha I wasn’t really feeling that either but I needed to do something and the bike just seemed more convenient. Plus I could watch Green Day stuff on YouTube while biking so ya know, that basically helped me make my decision. πŸ˜‰

Wednesday:

  • 1 mile run
  • 10 minute strength routine

Yay! I ran!! Granted it wasn’t a very long run haha. It was 80 degrees out and since I’m the worlds biggest wimp when it comes to the heat I just kinda quit. It’s all good though, because 1 mile is better than no miles. πŸ˜‰ Followed my short run with some strength stuff that also had a tiny bit of stretching in it. It was nice.

Processed with Rookie Cam

Thursday:

  • 15 minutes on the stationary bike

Nothing too exciting on Thursday. Spent a short amount of time on my bike then cleaned the house. Fun fun fun. πŸ˜‰

Friday:

  • Rest day

Yet another boring day. πŸ˜‰ Just needed another day off.

Saturday:

  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 15 minutes of yoga

Yeah, I probably should have run on Saturday. But I had stayed up pretty late the night before, woke up late, and by then it was super hot/humid and the sun was all the way up, and you know how big of a wimp I am when it comes to the heat haha. Oh well, at least I did something involving cardiovascular fitness. πŸ™‚

img_6624

Sunday:

  • 40 minutes of yoga

Oh man this yoga practice was exactly what I needed today! I feel so so so great now! 😁

Anyways, my knee is feeling a lot better and I’m feeling good in general, so I plan on dedicating next week to getting back into running!

Happy Sunday everyone!

~Ashley

Weekly Recap: August 7th-13th, 2017

Monday:

  • Easy 2 miles
  • 15 minutes on the stationary bike

My asthma was acting up on Monday, so instead of doing a 30 minute run followed by 30 minutes of cross training like my training plan called for, I did 2 easy miles followed by 15 minutes on the stationary bike. At least I got something done!! πŸ™‚

Processed with Rookie Cam

Tuesday:

  • Intervals
  • 1 hour of working in the garden

My lungs were feeling much better on Tuesday! So I actually got the workout that was scheduled done!! πŸ™‚ Warmed up with an easy mile, ran hard for 5 minutes while pushing a little harder up the hills, recovered for 1:30 minutes, repeated 3 more times, cooled down with a few minutes of walking. This workout felt pretty good and accoridng to the data my spiffy Garmin Fenix 5 gives me, I improved my fitness with the workout!

After my run I spent around an hour working in the garden. Mostly cutting down weeds and harvesting tomatoes.

Wednesday:

  • Easy 2 miles

My training plan actually called for a 45 minute easy run for Wednesday, but I did something a little different. So I think I’ve mentioned before that this summer I’ve been making a point to get out and run a little later in the morning, so that the sun is up and it’s a bit warmer out. So that’s exactly what I did! I figure running in the heat will make me stronger physically and mentally. And I think it’s working, earlier in the summer I could only make it a mile before I would “have” to call it quits (I’m a huge wimp when it comes to the heat haha), but I made it 2 miles on Wednesday, so, progress!! πŸ˜‰

Processed with Rookie Cam

Thursday:

  • 30 minutes of yoga

Thursday was my rest day so I didn’t do anything exciting. Just 30 minutes of easy, great feeling yoga! πŸ™‚

Friday:

  • Green Day concert!!

First and foremost, this totally counts as exercise!! Haha I was on my feet dancing and singing for 2 and a half hours and I was absolutely exausted by the time it was over. It was sooooo much fun though. πŸ™‚

Anyway, the original plan was to do my long run on Friday, but obviously that didn’t happen. Friday is trash day in my neighborhood, so first thing in the morning I went to put the trashcan and recycle bins out on the street, no big deal. Well, it shouldn’t have been. But when I went to move on of the recycle bins this big pane of glass that we had propped up against the wall behind the recycle bin (the people we bought the house from left it here and we aren’t entirely sure what to do with it) started falling and my first instinct was to catch it. Of course once I did it broke into 3 or 4 smaller pieces and I ended up cutting my pointer finger on my left hand pretty badly. Like, not badly enough to need medical attention (at least I didn’t think so), but bad enough that I couldn’t get it to stop bleeding for a while and it seemed like whenever I let my hand hand down by my side it would start bleeding all over again. So running 9 miles was kinda out of the question unless I wanted to bleed even more from my finger and probably interfere with the healing process….I swear my klutzy-ness had prevented me from running a lot hahaha.

I think I did get pretty lucky though. If I didn’t catch that pane of glass it probably would have fallen/broken on my feet and I can only imagine that would have been worse.

Saturday:Β

  • Rest Day

So I was absolutely exhausted after seeing Green Day on Friday. Haha I felt hungover, even though I didn’t drink any alchohol. I guess I must have been a little dehydrated or something…So I spent the day resting and re hydrating. I thought about doing a few easy miles in the evening, but oh man, I was just too tired haha…

Sunday:

  • 3 easy miles

So I guess I fucked my shin up at the Green Day concert?? Probably because I was an idiot and wore shoes that I know always end up hurting my feet, and obviously I was on them for quite a while…Anyway, I hobbled my way through 3 miles before I quit being stubborn and stopped. Haha I never realized how often I actually end up hurting myself until I started documenting and sharing my stuff on the internet…Ah well. I’m gonna go stretch and hope I can workout whatever this is. πŸ˜‰

Half Marathon Training Day 17 and A Garden Update

So you know how right before a big event you have planned how you just don’t feel like doing anything? That’s definitely what I’ve had going on today. It was also one of those days where you realize it’s already 2:00 pm and you really haven’t done anything all day…

Well, I suppose that’s actually kind of a lie though. I did run this morning (although I did a lot of procrastinating before hand) and I also did a pretty decent amount of work in the garden after my run, so I suppose I did doΒ something.Β Haha I guess it just doesn’t feel like a lot after sitting around for most of the afternoon. I don’t know, I’m just in a weird mood at this exact moment I guess.

But anyways, my run did actually go pretty well! Especially considering that I didn’t get it done until after 9 am and it was getting pretty hot out haha. So the game plan for today’s workout was to warm up for a mile and then do 5 minutes of hard running, 1:30 minutes of rest, repeat 3 more times, then cool down with another mile. And I mostly accomplished that haha. I mean, I did everything but the last mile to cool down. At that point it was super hot, I tired, drained, and felt like it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to skip that last mile. Especially since I did all of the hard stuff, anyway. πŸ˜‰

Nimrod is a great album to run to! Especially if you’re a pissed off at someone haha.

So even though I did skip that last mile I’m quite happy with how this workout went! Since the half marathon I’m training for has some pretty killer hills, I decided to push it just a little bit up the hills. I’m going to be ready to tackle those crazy rolling hills come November!! Haha but anyway, I didn’t do anything too crazy or intentionally seek out the bigger hills in my neighborhood, but I did tell myself to “run strong” up the hills I did encounter, instead of slowing down because it was hard and hot and uncomfortable. I’m quite proud of myself for handling the hills the way I did today. πŸ™‚

After inspecting my Fenix 5 and Garmin Connect, it would appear that I’m doing something right at the moment! According to my fancy Fenix (seriously though, all of the feedback you get from this thing is pretty impressive!) my training load is currently optimal! Yay!! And according to Garmin Connect (and my Fenix, I suppose) my run today should improve my anaerobic fitness and my VO2 max! Pretty exciting stuff!!

Hahaha honestly at this point I’m not sure what I should be doing with all of this information. But I have a feeling that just maybe I can use it to start training more effectively and efficiently. I mean, following training plan is one thing, but knowing if you’re working too much, just enough, or not enough kinda takes things to a whole new level!

So I’m very pleased with how my run went this morning. I’m also very pleased with how my garden is doing!! I’m still a bit upset that my zucchini plants have died and my lettuce went to seed and is now all just weird stalk-y things (but hopefully that means I won’t actually have to plant lettuce next year, it’ll just start growing all by itself), but everything is doing quite well!! Especially my tomatoes. One could possibly argue that they’re doing a little bit too well. The plants got quite big and we didn’t space them out enough, so the bigger, stronger plants are killing a few of the weaker plants… It’s not really that bad though. I mean, I’m still getting a piss ton of tomatoes every day, so I pulled out two of the plants that were dying this morning. So now my bigger stronger plants wont have to fight for water/nutrients anymore, and hopefully that means they’ll produce even more tomatoes! Hahaha not that I need more or anything though.

This is everything I picked this morning. There are 18 tomatoes there. I definitely don’t have a shortage of those!

The bigger watermelon that I had growing split a little bit before it was ripe because of all the rain we had gotten on Sunday. Sad face…I gave it to the rabbits though and they seemed to enjoy it! They ate the whole thing, rind and all! There’s still a smaller one (although it’s getting a little bit bigger everyday!) out there that’s doing really well, so hopefully that one will be able to grow, ripen, and be able to be picked before we get another day full of rain. And as you can see in the photo above, I’ve also got some good looking cucumbers and a few banana peppers as well! I think We’ve got enough cucumbers to make another jar of pickles! We’re definitely not going to have as many cucumbers/pickles as we did last year. Then we had 3 or 4 cucumber plants, now we only have one. But we’ve already got 5 jars of pickles made and growing season isn’t over yet! So it’s not like we’re suffering there either haha.

I think last year our garden definitely did a little better, but we also didn’t leave it unattended for 10 days last year…Plus everyone has an off year, but all in all I’m still quite happy with what we’ve got going on. I mean, I’ve got over 30 tomatoes sitting on my counter right now haha! Luke definitely need to get to canning them! πŸ˜‰

So yeah, gardening and running. That’s what my day has consisted of. Other than that I can’t really tell you what else I’ve done, because honestly even I’m not entirely sure haha.

This evening Luke and I are going to drive 30 minutes to go grocery shopping when he gets home from work. We had planned on getting that done yesterday and drove to the Aldi that’s 15 minutes from our house, but it turns out that they’ve closed for remodeling. So weΒ triedΒ to shop at Walmart, but that didn’t go well. First off, their produce is super expensive! And second off, we just didn’t know what else to get. Obviously they didn’t have the usually stuff we would get at Aldi and it just seemed like everything else was just boxed/frozen stuff that wasn’t all that great for you. I mean, I’m sure they have better options if you know what you’re looking for, but we did not. Hahaha it’s been quite a while since we’ve grocery shopped at Walmart…

So long story short, we ended up getting cherries, potatoes, bananas, and dinner for last night before we gave up and decided to go to the other Aldi tonight.

Oh, and hey! Look how close we’re getting!!! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Β I’m soooo freaking stoked for Friday!!!!

Green Day shirt of the Day! πŸ˜‰ Haha I get a lot of weird looks when I wear this one, because I have one of those skulls tattooed on my shoulder (but in black because white wouldn’t have worked well haha).Β

So yeah, that’s what’s going on with me. What’s going on with you? πŸ™‚ I hope everyone is having a good Tuesday!!
