Hey Everyone! I Need Your Help!!

Remember how Luke just showed up with a new ferret last week?Β Well Luke had been calling “him” a “he” ever since he brought “him” home, so I figured he’d been told that our new furry friend was a boy. That wasn’t the case though. For whatever reason he just assumed it was a boy and didn’t even bother to check…Well I did, and it turns our our new pet is actually a she hahaha!

img_6368-1

So the problem is now we have no idea what to call her! Originally we were going to name her Alfred to stick with the Batman thing we had going on with our first ferret (his name is Bruce πŸ˜‰ ). But Luke and I don’t exactly want to call her that now that we know she’s a girl. Also, we both really suck at coming up with names hahaha. I mean, we have some very interesting names for our animals; the dogs are Lily (she came named though), Dean, and Finn. The cats are Bubbles (she also came named, and no, it’s not after the Power Puff Girl) and Winchester. The rabbits are Daisy and Rune. And the Leopard gecko is Sandile (it’s a pokemon haha). So yeah, coming up with names is hard and we don’t think we’re very good at it haha.

We thought about going withΒ Selina Β (because Catwoman) but eh, I’m not a fan of that name haha. So do any of you have any idea’s as to what we could call this little cutie?? She’s a bit of a spaz, but she’s so much fun and full of personality! So seriously? Got any suggestions? It’s been a week and she still doesn’t have a name, but she really needs one!

And before anyone asks because I’m sure someone will, yes, Bruce is neutered and she’s spayed, so there’s nothing to worry about on that front. They do love each other very much already though. πŸ˜‰

Fall Is Almost Here, Two Short Runs, An Injury Update, Compression Gear, and Another Furry Friend

First and foremost, #ThrowbackThursday anyone? πŸ˜‰ Ah man, throwback Thursday never ceases to amuse me. I just think it’s fun to take a look back at past life experiences, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they might be.

So, since fall is almost here and I’m so super duper excited about that, I went perusing through the camera roll on my phone this morning looking for the photos of my jack-o-lanterns from last year, because they were pretty darn spiffy if you ask me!!

I was so super excited about how the 13.1 pumpkin turned out! I was kinda worried about it because I thought it was going to be hard to tell what it was, but once it was lit up it looked pretty good! And look at all the hair I used to have!! Haha not gonna lie, looking back I kinda regret cutting it all off. But it was sooo much nicer not having to deal with all of that hot hair over the summer. But anyways, now I’ve got to figure out what I want to do with this years pumpkins! Haha obviously I’ve still got some time, but I take this stuff very seriously! πŸ˜‰ We’re starting to get close to my favorite time of year and I’m so super stoked!!

TRUE!!!!!

So now that we’re into the middle of September we’re starting to experience a bit of fall like weather in the morning/evening. The highs in the afternoon have been in the 80’s though so that still kinda sucks, but we’ll get to the colder weather eventually. πŸ™‚ But anyways, the nice weather in the morning is really reallyΒ reallyΒ making me miss running. Fall running is the best running (except once winter rolls around, then I’ll spend all season telling you that winter running is the best πŸ˜‰ ) and right now I definitely feel like I’m missing out!!

I have managed to do two very short runs this week. 2 miles on Monday and 2 more miles on Wednesday. That’s definitely not the kind of running I should be doing considering that I’m supposed to be training for my 3rd half marathon, but at the moment it’s the only kind of running I can do. And it’s still totally better than not running at all!!

Unfortunately the 4 miles that I’ve run this week were not pain free miles. During both runs my knee started to ache a bit during the second mile and on Wednesday I felt it a little bit in my shin as well. That was no bueno…but it’s still not as bad as it was last month and I like to think it’s finally starting to get better. Healing this whole situation has definitely been a slow process, but I’m glad that it seems to be getting better without the help of a doctor. Because IΒ reallyΒ didn’t want to have to go see one haha.

So I think I’ve mentioned before that I’ve been taking R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation) very seriously in order to get this thing taken care of. Obviously the rest has come in the form of not running, but I’ve also been trying to take it easy and walk a little less if it starts bothering me. I was icing it for a while but that doesn’t seem to be doing anything for it anymore. And honestly I’m pretty sure icing is really only effective for the first like, 48 hours or something like that after you’ve been injured (I’m not entirely sure about that though, so don’t quote me on it. πŸ˜‰ ). So that brings me to compression and elevation. As far as elevation goes, I’ve just been propping my leg up with a pillow in the evening whenever i’m sitting down watching TV, but my compression game has definitely been VERY strong!

img_6164

I’m sporting a very old compression sock and a very new compression knee sleeve in this photo.

So Luke’s just as determined to get me healthy again as quickly as possible so he’s been making me experiment with some new gear haha. First he got me the knee sleeve pictured above. Oh boy does that thing work! I didn’t realize that my knee was actually hurting while I was walking until I started wearing this thing around haha (this right here is why I have to be super careful when it comes to injures. I have a ridiculous pain tolerance and sometimes I don’t notice that anythings going on until after it goes away and I start feeling normal again…). And after wearing it for about a week I was able to do my two short runs this week, which was obviously a huge improvement over not being able to run at all. πŸ™‚ So because I had quite a bit of success with the knee brace, Luke thought hey, if a little bit of compression worked, why not go with EVEN MORE compression. So he came home with a pair of full on compression tights for me the other day haha. I kinda wish he hadn’t spent so much money on me for this stuff, compression gear (especially these tights, holy shit) isn’t cheap…but I mean, they are some super spiffy looking tights. πŸ™‚

I’ve only worn them once, so at this point there’s really no telling if they made a difference, but they’re still super spiffy. πŸ™‚

So all of that actually came about because I had ordered myself a new pair of Zensah compression calf sleeves (like I said, my compression socks are really old, and I’ve had to cut the toes off of both pairs that I have because they make my toes uncomfortable, so I figured sleeves were the way to go. πŸ˜‰ ) and a sports bra at some point last week, I think? The only problem with that is that Zensah’s warehouse is located in southern Florida so they had to close up shop and evacuate because of hurricane Irma, so I guess they’re not entirely sure when they’ll be able to ship out anything. And like, obviously that’s totally understandable and I don’t mind waiting, but Luke is not a patient person and apparently that applies to me as well, and that’s how I ended up with even more compression gear hahahahaha.

So like, I know compression gear is one of those things that some people absolutely swear by and other people just think is a placebo kinda thing, but it’s always seemed to work for me so I’m just gonna roll with it! πŸ™‚

Whew, alrighty then! Last on my agenda of this to talk about today is our newest furry friend! Everyone, meet Alfred!

img_6368

So kind of on a whim I guess, Luke decided that our other ferret, Bruce, needed a friend. So he went and got him one last night. Hahaha if you haven’t noticed, once Luke sets his mind on something he just goes and does it. And that’s how we ended up with another ferret. It’s really funny because everyone thinks all of the animals were my idea (because I’m the huge animal lover who was raised on a farm), but aside from the cats and Lily, Luke’s the one who went out and got the rest of them haha. I mean, I’m not complaining though. πŸ˜‰

At first we were both a little wary about introducing them to each other. Luckily we have two ferret cages so if it didn’t go well we could have kept them separate, but it looks like that’s not going to be a problem. They pretty much liked each other right off the bat and are already becoming fast friends. So I guess Luke was right, getting Bruce a friend was a good idea. And I mean, what good is Bruce Wayne without Alfred Pennyworth? πŸ˜‰

img_6385

Okey dokey then! That’s all I’ve got to talk about for today! I’ve been doing a terrible job at keeping up with everyone lately, so what’s going on with you? Are you excited about fall? Any up coming races, spiffy new gear, new furry friends, new PR’s, or are you sidelined with an injury as well?

Anyways, I hope everyone has a happy Friday eve, a great Friday tomorrow, and an even better weekend!

Green Day Concerts, A Rainy Run, And More Puppy Stuff

Yesterday one of my friends from grade school (yup, I still keep in touch with a few of my grade school classmates πŸ˜‰) saw Green Day live in Champaing, IL. I may or may not have stalked his Facebook page all night waiting for updates on the show haha.

Obviously I screen shot this from Billie Joe Armstrong’s Instagram account. πŸ˜‰

At first I was super duper jealous because I was not there. Then I remembered that I’m seeing them in Kansas City in August so that made it a little better, until I remembered that I’m going to be in the nosebleed seats and my friend had really really awesome seats! Then I was kinda jealous all over again. His seats were actually really similar to where Luke and I sat in the Scot Trade Center back when we saw Green Day in 2009. Jeez that was a really good time…Anyway, then I got over myself by reminding myself that I’m seeing my ALL TIME FAVORITE BAND EVER this summer and I’d much rather sit in the worst seats in the stadium versus not seeing them at all. So it’s all good and I seriously can’t wait for August. 😁

So just for fun, here’s a photo of me before the Green Day concert in 2009. I was a senior in high school and 17 years old. First off, I cropped Luke out because I didn’t think he’d appreciate his emo kid hair cut being posted onto the interwebs for all to see. I on the other hand, have no shame! Look at those freaking bangs! Not gonna lie though, I’m currently trying to grow them out like that again and I’m getting pretty darn close. Β And you can’t really tell from this picture, but my eyeliner skills have come aΒ long way. Thank goodness for that! πŸ˜‰Β I’m also super glad that I’m not that pudgy anymore. Jeez my face as really round and I had a gross belly…but whatever.

img_8616

Also, I just realized that the first time I saw Green Day was August 11th, 2009 and now I’m seeing them again on August 11th, 2017. That’s kinda neat right?! Anyways, I think that’s enough about Green Day…for now…

At around 2 o’clock this morning Luke and I were both woken up buy aΒ huge crash of thunder! That’s when I decided that today was going to be a fun day because, yay I love thunder storms!! I quickly feel back asleep after that, but it was still raining when I woke up at 7 am. Or I guess I should just say that it was raining when I woke up. I have no idea if it actually rained all night or not. But anyway, once I got up I let my herd of dogs out into the rain so that they could pee, then let them right back in because I don’t like leaving them outside in the rain, even though none of them seem to mind. Then I had some coffee and water, started writing this post, cleaned up some broken glass because Finn chased Winchester onto a table and he knocked down a candle (yeah, Finn is trying to herd the cats now…), then started gearing up for the interval workout that was on the scheduled for today.

I got out the door at around 8:30 am and by then it had stopped raining. Only for a little bit though. I ended up getting rained on off and on during this workout. That and splashing through every single puddle that I could made this run a lot more fun than I though it was going to be! It was a long interval workout which I absolutely hate! Long intervals seriously kill me every single time…Which is probably why I need to do them more often.

I actually feel like this was a pretty solid workout though! The wind and rain definitely slowed me down a bit, especially during my last 8 minute running interval, which I spent going up hill and against the wind. That’s always a great combination haha. But I felt really good and I definitely pushed myself without going too far and ending up completely destroyed by the time I finished, so yay me!

After my run I peeled off my soaking wet clothes, changed into sweats, had a quick snack, then took a super long (well long for me, I don’t tend to take long showers), super hot shower. It was fantastic! At that point in the day it was still pouring down rain, so me and all three dogs kinda hung out in our bedroom for a while. The dogs all napped while I laid in bed and perused Instagram and Pinterest for a while. Before too long I got bored and hungry so I made myself some lunch then I decided to introduce Finn to Bruce.

Haha poor Finn has never seen a ferret before, so he wasn’t quite sure what to think of him. Eventually he decided that herding him was probably the best course of action, so that’s what he tried to do. He quickly learned that the border collie stare doesn’t work on ferrets and that they have sharp teeth. Luckily Bruce was a good sport about the whole thing. He likes dogs and has dealt with puppies before, so this wasn’t anything new for him. He didn’t get to stay out for too long though, Finn was starting to get kinda nippy (he comes from a cattle dog bloodline, so that’s pretty typical. They have to be a lot more aggressive than sheepdogs and nipping and barking is all part of that.) and I didn’t want anyone to get hurt. We’ll keep working on it though. It shouldn’t take him long to learn that Bruce is a friend and not something to herd. πŸ™‚

Eventually I would like to introduce him to some cows or sheep or something (probably cows or maybe even goats. The more I think about it, the more I foresee things going very badly for the sheep…). He has a very strong herding instinct and I think he’d be really good at it. Unfortunately I don’t have anywhere to take him anymore. My grandma’s farm was sold in February and she’s getting all settled into her new house, and I don’t really know anyone else with a farm or livestock. I guess we could take him to get a few herding lessons. We did that for Lily back in the day and she was really good! She ended up being very helpful back when my dad had cows. But I suppose we still have a while to figure that all out. You don’t typically start introducing them to livestock until they’re around a year old anyway.

img_5689

Lily is seriously a hardcore farm dogs. She’ll square up with a 1 ton bull who’s acting aggressive and pawing at the ground. She doesn’t give a shit. She’ll look him dead in the eye and then bite his face if he tries anything. (Yeah, that whole scenario has happened a few times haha).

Anyway, Lily and Dean have been walked earlier in the day, so I suppose I need to go take Finn out now. Plus I’ve got other stuff I need to do, but I keep procrastinating by adding more to this post every time I think about getting up to do something. But I swear I’m gonna go be productive now!

Happy Hump Day!

Sister, Snow, Social Media, and Other Saturday Stuff

I’m just all about “S”‘s today, apparently.

My sister Sarah (another “s”, go figure πŸ˜‰), her husband, and their two dogs drove from Colorado to Illinois today, and of course they stopped here in Kansas on they way.

Sarah’s husband is in the army and is going to be deployed soon, so I guess they decided to spent his Christmas leave with his family in Illinois. Not that it’s a big deal or anything, our parents live like an hour and a half away from them in Colorado, so they can basically see each other anytime, and Sarah’s twin, and our brother, and grandma are still in Illinois, so she’ll get to see them while they are there. Actually, depending how long they stay in Illinois, I may get to hang out with all of my siblings at Christmas! Luke and I may be going there for a few days. That’s a big “may” though. He’s still not sure what he wants to do.

Anyway, my sister was super excited about stopping here, because I finally got to meet her 5 month old German Shepherd puppy, Moose! He is adorable, but kinda awkward. Haha he’s at that stage in life though, he’ll grow out of it eventually (oh man, you’d swear o was talking about a kid!).

I’m really glad she finally got a German Shepherd puppy. She’s wanted on for as long as I’ve wanted a border collie (so, pretty much her whole life).

Our grandma actually used to breed German Shepherds, so when we were really little we had a few of them around. I specifically remember the female, Sugar Baby, or Babe for short. She lived outside in a dog house in the corner of their yard because she hated being inside. She was an amazing dog though, my grandma and grandpa used to tell people they could leave us kids alone with her and not have to worry about us. They were probably right! She was super protective of us and wouldn’t let anyone she didn’t know near us, but we could climb all over her, grab her tail, ears, mouth, it didn’t matter, she would let us do whatever we wanted.

My grandma and “Miracle” a pup she bred, back in 1982.

German Shepherds are amazing dogs; smart, loyal, and protective. If they weren’t so prone to cancer and hip problems, and of it was easier to find one that didn’t have an American Kennel Club bloodline (that’s a whole other thing though, you definitely don’t want to get me started on that), Luke and I would probably end up with one at some point. But they are prone to heath problems, and most pure bred dogs have bloodlines tied to the AKC, so we are just going to stick with border collies (it’s actually still relatively easy to find border collies that aren’t associated with the AKC if you know what you’re looking for).
I’ve gone way off track here, I could seriously talk about dogs and border collies until my face turns blue, so I’m going to reel it back in before I get too deep into all that stuff.

Sarah and I have been texting each other all day about the weather. It started snowing in Colorado around midnight last night, so the road were pretty nasty, and their drive was slow going. We were hoping that eventually they’d be able to get in front of all the snow, but that never happened. Here in Kansas it was already kinda icy from the little bit of rain last night, and then we started to get some snow flurries around 10:30 am and by noon it was coming down pretty steadily.

I’m not complaining though! I love the snow!! It sucks that they had to drive through all of this, but they lived in Alaska for 3 years, so they should be used to it haha.

So I was originally going to wait to run until around 6 pm because that’s when the majority of the snow was supposed to hit, but I started getting super impatient so I went after lunch.

I had no plan going into this run. I was just gonna see how bad the roads were and go until it stopped being fun haha. The roads actually weren’t too bad, our town salted the roads last night and this morning, so while there were some slick spots it wasn’t too bad. I ended up going 4 miles. I briefly considered going another, but I was starving and a Honey Stinger waffle was calling my name!

After my run and waffle, I took a nice hot shower and then had a big glass of orange juice. I’m feeling a little sniffly again, so I figure I might as well load up on some vitamin C before and pray that I don’t end up with an actual cold (plus orange juice just sounded good 😬). So far this cold and flue season I’ve gotten a little sniffly but have yet to get a full blow cold, and I’m hoping to keep it that way!

So at this point in the day, the snow slowed down and then eventually stopped. Luke and I both started obsessively checking the weather, watching to see if the next wave of snow was still going to hit us. For once he actually wants the snow to hit us! But only because he wants the dogs to be able to play in it. I just like snow in general. ❄❄❄

On a slightly unrelated note, lately whenever I go to get our mail, I do it with Bruce in my hoodie. He enjoys going outside for a little bit. Yeah, my neighbors have to think I’m fucking nuts. I run in any and every weather condition, I’ve been running without shoes on, I talk to my dogs like they’re people while we’re out walking, and now I’m carting a ferret around. Yup, I’m definitely the crazy neighbor. πŸ˜‚

Around 5pm I had to take Lily and Dean for quick walks. By then it was snowing again and they love snow, so who am I to deny them time in their favorite weather. I mean it’s not like it was -12 with the windchill or anything (it totally was though πŸ˜‚). They were very short walks, but we had fun and got to see some Christmas lights.

The Civics Center’s tree is really pretty πŸ˜„

My sister, brother in law, and their two dogs finally made it to our house around 6:30 pm They said that for the most part the highways weren’t too bad until it started snowing again in Kansa. Then they started getting kinda gross. Their drive through Missouri will probably be even worse, unfortunately. The St. Louis area has been getting an icy mix since yesterday and MOdot has said multiple times that people should avoid traveling if possible. As long as they are careful they should be ok though.

Anyway, their dogs were super excited to get out of the car and run around. They got to play in the snow with Lily and Dean, and then they got to get lots of pets from Luke and I after we all ate dinner. They are very sweet dogs. πŸ˜„

They only stayed for about 1/2 an hour. They want to make it to Illinois before midnight, so the didn’t want to dawdled. It was nice to see them though, it’s been a while since I’ve seen Sarah.

So yeah, now that those shenanigans are over, I got pretty good run in, and the dogs got to play in the snow a little bit, I’m thinking it’s time for a pot of tea and to continue reading Game of Thrones.

But first I just wanted to take a quick moment to say that I’ve been pretty active on social media lately, so if you’re at all interested in the little weird, random things that go on in my life you should check me out here;

And if you follow me there’s a really good chance I’ll follow you! The only thing I won’t do is add you on Facebook. I kinda reserve that for close friends and family. πŸ˜„

Alrighty, I know this post is kinda long and rambly, so thanks for sticking with me for this long! I’m kinda thinking I should be doing some longer, more detailed posts, so I figure this had been good practice, even though I was all over the place. But that’s pretty much all I’ve got for today.

Happy snow day! ❄⛄️
