That Factory Work Life

My first “week” (because unless you’re working mandatory over-time you work 3 days a week plus every third Sunday) is done! Thank God!!

I’m not going to sugar coat this, trying to adjust to this job/our new life has been fucking hard. For everyone, I think, but obviously me. Obviously.

But my husband is used to coming home to a house with most of the chores done. Haha I can’t say “clean” because we you have 4 dogs, 2 cats, 2 ferrets, a rabbit, and 7 chickens, nothing is truly every spotlessly clean. πŸ˜‚ He’s also used to having his dinner made and breakfast and lunch ready for the next day. And never having to worry if the dishes or laundry is done.

Nope. None of that is happening anymore. At least not when I have to work. I have to be at work before he does and he gets home before I do now.

The poor dogs have to be kept inside for 12 hours on days that I work now. That’s not as big of an issue for Lily as it is for Dean, Finn, and Whiskey. They prefer to spend their days outside. It’s just more exiting out there, running around and burning off energy. But since I’m gone they have to be kept inside. Mostly so they don’t get caught on any bad weather. But also just in case anything else were to ever happen to them.

Daisy (the rabbit) hasn’t been able to be outside in her hutch either for the same reasons. And she hasn’t been able to run freely through the house like she does most days. The chickens have had to be in their inner coop because I can’t keep an eye on them through the day and they haven’t been getting any treats/kitchen scraps. And the cats are being extra needy because they aren’t getting kitty cuddles through the day.

And then there’s me.

I hurt everywhere. My shoulders, arms, abs, and back are all currently throbbing. Mostly because this is a super physical job. My arms and legs are covered with scratches and bruises from loading cat litter boxes into a machine that fills them with litter. My wrists and hands hurt like hell because they’ve always been pathetically weak and delicate. That’s actually been and issues for me in other areas of life that I won’t get into now. I have a bruise on the heal of my hand from I have no fucking clue. My toes are bruised because my steel toed boots are shitty (they were $30 at Walmart. Do big recommend. You get what you pay for. I just didn’t have the money at the time for nicer boots). And since my boots are shitty my feet ache. I’m fucking exhausted and have to be in bed by 8pm on work nights because I have to be up by 4 am and if I go to bed any later than that I’d be even worse off. Since I get off at 5pm that means I have 3 hours off to do anything before I have to go to sleep, wake up, and do it all over again. It’s a fucking grind.

I legit look like I’ve been in a fight.

And sure, it’s only 3 days a week and every third Sunday. Until that mandatory overtime happens. But either way. It’s fucking rough….

I’m not a retail worker anymore (although not gonna lie, I think I’d rather work in retail again, and I don’t drink soda, but I feel this sentiment in my soul right now. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚

Funnily enough though my legs feel alright! A little tired from standing so much and a bit achy, probably from my shitty boots, but they’ve definitely felt worse! Apparently long runs and speed workouts have prepared them to handle this kind of thing. Haha who would have thought?! πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚

And speaking of running; I didn’t get to do that for the first half of this week. Mostly because I’ve just been beyond exhausted by the time I get home. Plus running would severely cut into my time to get anything else done in my 3 hour period of not working/sleeping.

So yeah, I fucking hate it. But for $18.50 an hour it’s worth it, right? That what everyone tells me at least. Plus that’s the most I could hope to get paid, having very little experience and no college education. Oh well. I’ve gotta do it. So I guess I’m going to do it.

Anyway, today I did get a little run in though! It was short and slow because I’m tired, but oh man did it feel good to sleep in until 8 am, put on my running gear, lace up my super comfy and not painful at all running shoes, and hit the road! And I gotta say, asphalt feels like a fucking soft plush surface after having to stand on concrete in uncomfortable boots for 12 hours, 3 days in a row. πŸ˜‚

It was a fantastic run! Somehow running made my feet feel sooo much better! Plus it dropped over 25 degrees over night and was 53 degrees when I started my run. So it literally went from summer to fall over night. I can’t say I’m all that upset about that. πŸ˜‰ The cool, cloudy weather made this run even better!

Unfortunately I’m not sure how much more running or even relaxing I’m going to get to do on my 4 days off. Today I had to clean the house as best as possible because my brother-in-law is getting married on Saturday and a bunch of our family is coming for that. Obviously it’s nice to get to spend time with family, but we’re going to be super busy and not gonna lie, I’m not about that right now. I just wanna….do nothing. πŸ˜‚

Anyway, I know this has been a whiny post and it’s obviously I have a whole lot to be grateful for, but I think it’s good to just get it all out sometimes. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

But yeah, this is my life now I guess. I’m sure things will get easier after a while. Although I don’t think I’ll ever stop getting beat up by the boxes. I bruise very easily. And I’m kinda just an injury prone person in general. Apparently I’m not as hardcore as I like to think I am. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

This has been an update! I hope you’re doing well.

Pumpkin Picking 2019

Woohoo! The tradition continues!!

Every year since Luke and I moved from Illinois to Kansas we’ve gone pumpkin picking in the fall. Not on any specific date. We just go whenever works best for us. Or at a particular place. We’ve gone to a few different cider mills, orchards, and straight up pumpkin patches. But it’s still a tradition that’s still going strong 7 years as of today!

We took Dean with us today because we’ve always wanted to bring a dog with us but we never bothered looking up whether or not we could until today. πŸ˜‚ But they said dogs were allowed so we brought one!!

Hahaha it’s hard picking when you’ve got 4 to choose from. But we chose Dean because he’s the most laid back and chill. Plus he has very little herding drive so he didn’t really bother the goats and chickens and rabbits at the petting zoo area. Lily, Finn, and Whiskey would have wanted to herd all of the critters. πŸ˜‚

Anyway, we went to the Louisburg Cider Mill bright and early this morning! We got there at 8 am, right when they open, so we could beat the heat and the crowds! And we were totally successful!!

First we took Dean through the corn maze. He was very confused about that. He wanted to keep running through the corn. Eventually he figured out that we were staying on the path though and eventually we let him lead the way. He wasn’t very successful about finding his way to the end, but eventually Luke and I figured it out! Hahaha I’m pretty sure that was the first time I’ve actually entered and exited a corn maze in the correct place. πŸ˜‚

After we finished the corn maze we got down to business picking THE PERFECT pumpkin! I think we succeeded in that endeavor! It’s HUGE, and round, and perfect! Hahaha I’m very excited! πŸŽƒπŸŽƒπŸŽƒ

Surprisingly enough I don’t have any photos of it right now. I’m sure I’ll have a whole bunch throughout the rest of spooky season though! But I do have a few photos of the pumpkin patch and Dean dragging me through it. πŸ˜‚

Whew! That was a lot of fun!! After we picked out our perfect (but super expensive) pumpkin we went to the little country store they have there and got some loose tea (they have THE BEST loose tea) and soup mix. Yum!! πŸ˜‹

Now if only the weather would cooperate and cool off! It was super nice out this morning but it got up to 90 by this afternoon. Boo… It is supposed to cool down but next week though and I sure hope it does! I’m looking forward to some fall weather!

Anyway, after our pumpkin picking adventures Luke and I ran some errands, bough groceries, then went to Walmart for some golf balls because Luke wanted to golf today. So we did get his golf balls. But we also ended up with some mini pumpkins as well. πŸ˜‚

And he did get to get in 18 holes of golf. I didn’t feel like playing though so I played the part of caddy/spectator. πŸ˜‰

So I got to go pumpkin picking which is one of my favorite things and Luke got yo go golfing which is one of his favorite things, so everyone was a winner today! πŸŽƒ 🏌️😊

And now that we’re done with all of that fun we’re going to spend our evening just hanging out at home. And I’m going to at least attempt to prepare for my long run tomorrow. Really all I need to do is make sure I have breakfast ready, set my coffee maker, and lay out my clothes. But I don’t feel like doing That right now. I should also probably drink some water because I basically haven’t all day. Oops.🀣

Anyway, happy Friday everyone!!

Fall, FRΓ‰ Skincare, My New Job, and Other Randomness

First off, happy Fall!!!

I’m a little late I know, but I’ve been pretty busy and kinda stressed out lately. But I am super duper excited that fall is finally here!! Now hopefully the weather will start cooperating soon. It’s still hitting near the 80’s in the afternoons here. But it’s looking like that’s finally going to stop by next week! Yay!!

I’m very much looking forward to cooler temps! Cooler weather makes for better running. πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜„

Anyway, I’m super duper excited to announce that I now how my very first affiliate link! Yay!

Now you probably know that I don’t like to work with or promote brands or companies that I don’t personally use or that I don’t believe in and this is no different.

I’ve been using FRΓ‰’s 123 kit for several weeks now and when they invited me to join their ambassador program I jumped at the chance!!

I never actually had a skin care routine before I got my FRΓ‰ 123 kit. My skin isn’t overly oily or dry and while I do get pimples every once in a while I don’t really suffer from acne. So I never thought that I needed to do anything special for my skin, outside of the random face masks I occasionally do. But oh boy was I wrong!

My skin has never felt so clean and fresh and healthy! I know it’s hard to tell in pictures. Especially since everyone edits them (although I can assure you I only ever do slight adjustments to the lighting, color, and add filters to my photos. πŸ˜‰). But it really has made a huge difference!

So, what I do with the 123 FRΓ‰ set is super simple! I use the “Protect Me” product before I run. It’s basically just a fancy sun screen. But it goes on so light and smooth, unlike most sunscreens, plus it smells great! Then in the shower after I run, I use the bottle of “Purify Me”. This stuff is so nice! It cleans out your pores and exfoliates your skin using Jojoba beads instead of plastic micro beads (which is super important! The less plastic we can use in this world the better!). And last but not least and my personal favorite is “Revive me”, which I apply after I get out of the shower. This stuff is super hydrating and strengthens skin barrier to help prevent dehydration. Plus it feels so light and fresh going onto your skin! I LOVE it!

Pre-run skincare!!

So if you’d like to check out the 123 FRΓ‰ set, or any of FRΓ‰’s skincare products please use my referral link;

https://www.freskincare.com/REBEL25

Plus today and TODAY ONLY you can use my code REBEL25 to buy one get one free on ALL FRΓ‰ products! Including sets like the 123 FRΓ‰ set which I absolutely love! 😊

If you miss out on the BOGO sale my code REBEL25 will always get you 15% off of any order on FRΓ‰ Skincare’s website.

Let me know if you use any FRΓ‰ products! I’d like to hear what you think!! All I can say is they’ve definitely made me a believer in a good skincare routine! Even with all of the stress that’s been currently going on in my life my skin looks and feels amazing!

Seriously though! I’ve been so stressed lately because I’ve been looking for a job/trying to get hired onto the Clorox plant here in my town since August. Yeah. That’s been a long, painful process. I also had an interview with Garmin earlier this month, but they “aren’t able to offer me employment at this time”. Bummer. But ya girl is now a temp at the Clorox plant! And as long as I don’t somehow fuck up my 90 day temp period I’ll be hired on as an actual employee with real benefits!

So I started my training yesterday. Me and another girl came in around noon and had to watch a slideshow presentation thing put on by one of the employees there. Then he walked us through the plant, explained what all of the machines do and basic protocol, assigned us lockers, we took a lunch break, and then he turned us over to people who work at the stations we’ll be working at. That was when my new friend and I parted ways for a little bit as we’ll be at different stations (and shifts). Basically all I did was observe for around 2 hours while the other guy explained what I’d be doing. So yeah. It’s not the best or most exciting job ever, but for $18 an hour (which is the most my uneducated ass could ever hope for) I can’t complain too much.

I go back on Monday to start my actual shifts. For my temp time I’ll be working the D1 shift which is Monday – Wednesday, 4:30 am – 5 pm and every third Sunday (everyone works every third Sunday) which is definitely ideal! I was told there was s good chance I’d end up moving to D2 which is the same hours but Wednesday – Saturday. Much less ideal, but still better than having to work overnights. Which I’m sure I’ll end up having to at some point, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Honesty, at this point I’m a little intimidated. It’s a lot of stuff to learn, but apparently it’s pretty easy once you learn it. So hopefully Monday, my first real day, goes well. I guess we’ll see!

Anyway, ITS SPOOKY SEASON BITCHES!!!

I mean, it’s been spooky season in my world for a while now, but you know what I mean. πŸ˜‰

So tomorrow Luke is taking me pumpkin picking! Yay!!!! I’m so freaking stoked!! So stoked in fact, that I went out waaay too fast for my run this morning. That coupled with the fact that I may or may not have CHUGGED three glasses of wine last night made me feel like actually death by about mile 2. πŸ˜‚ So I ended up running home and calling it good. So I made it 2.53 miles which is about 1/2 a mile shorter than I wanted, but I’ll still take it. I might have felt pretty bad, but they were still a fun 2.5 miles! 😁

Okey dokey then! That’s all for today!

Wishing everyone a very happy spooky season!

Running Doesn’t Have To Be Fancy Or Pretty Or Perfect

I shared this on Instagram on Wednesday, but I wanted to share it here as well just in case you don’t follow me there. 😊

How often do you look at a photo of yourself mid run and think to yourself β€œwow I look attractive!” If you’re like me the answer is probably not often. But that’s not the point of running. Despite what those people with perfectly curated Instagram accounts with professionally done photos, wearing the latest and fanciest gear, while hardly breaking a sweat might want you to believe.

Running isn’t supposed to be a pretty sport! That’s part of the fun of it really! It’s a sport quite literally filled with blood, sweat, and tears. Dirt and snot. Messy, windblown hair and crusty, salty skin. I think that’s incredibly freeing. Especially in the world of very photoshopped Instagram models that we live in.

Fuck looking pretty. Fuck having to look a certain way to get likes and engagement. Here I am. Bad angle, double chin, and all. Wearing a 5 year old tank top and leggings that have holes in them (which you can’t see, but I promise they’re there), in a slightly edited (I mean, you HAVE to put a filter on it πŸ˜‰), but not photoshopped photo that I took by screenshotting a video I took on my iPhone. Nothing fancy.

That’s the beauty of it though! Running doesn’t have to be fancy or pretty or perfect. Running can be whatever you want to make it.

My Break From Being A Runner

Just in case anyone wanted to know how my Sunday morning went; I tried to brew coffee without the coffee. πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Honestly, that pretty much sums up my week. I ran a grand total of one time this week and that was a whopping two miles. Mostly because I’ve been sick and for a while there anytime I attempted to do anything physically active that seemed to make it worse. So on Thursday after my one very short run this week I decided that I was done for this week and I was going to take a break from being s runner. If that makes any sense? Hahaha it made sense to me anyway.

(Which is why there is no weekly recap this week. I really don’t have much to recap. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ)

So on Friday Luke and o did our usual every-other-Friday routine. He played 18 holes of golf in the morning and I road along with him in the golf cart (which was the fastest cart on this side of the Mississippi! πŸ˜‰). Then we went grocery shopping, ran some errands, and other random boring adult stuff, then we went to a second golf course. πŸ˜‚

The second course we went to is a walking course, which is a lot less fun after riding around in the fastest cart on this side of the Mississippi all morning, and I actually played at this one! We only did 9 holes though. I was hoping the physical activity would help clear out my nose and chest and make me feel a little better, but honestly I ended up feeling worse by the time we were done. But I did get a SpongeBob ball that day, so obviously that made things a little better. πŸ˜‰

At this point I was just so done. I was tired of being sick, tired of not running. But also tired of always being worried about running and training for races and trying to improve my fitness and all of that fun stuff. Stressed about the job search and kinda bummed about the fact that I’m probably going to end up working at the Clorox plant here in town. Which in and of itself isn’t bad. But the having to work 12 hour shifts overnight is going to be a tough transition for me.

So I did something that I rarely ever do anymore. I got two bottles of wine and drank on on Friday night and the other last night. That’s two evenings in a row that I spent pleasantly buzzed on wine stuffing my face with whatever I wanted and just completely ignoring all of the things that have been causing me stress lately. It was kind of nice, actually.

There was definitely wine in that mug. πŸŽƒπŸ˜‚

Honestly I couldn’t tell you the last time I drank two nights in a row. I don’t drink very often anymore and especially not a couple of nights in a row like that. Mostly because I just don’t feel great afterwards and that makes running hard. That or I just don’t run after a night of drinking. But like I said before, I was taking a break from being a runner. πŸ˜‰

So I spent my weekend attempting to read the last book in Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series. I say attempting because finishing a series is always hard. Especially when you’ve already read it many many times and you know stuff that’s about to happen and how it’s ends. I kind of hate how this series ends. Mostly because it’s not the ending I wanted. πŸ˜‚ The problem is the ending makes so much sense and it’s kind of perfect. So I guess that’s what makes it so good. I’m not ready for it to end for the 19th (anyone see what I did there πŸ˜‰) time yet so I’ve been slowly making su way through it. πŸ˜‚

In my procrastination of finishing this book series I’ve fallen waaay into a Weezer and Fall Out Boy rabbit hole. Two bands I haven’t really exploded much since high school. Except I do often get nostalgic and listen to their songs that I liked from way back when, but now I’ve been listening to their “new to me” stuff. Hahaha ever since the Hella Mega tour with Weezer, Fall Out Boy, and Green Day was announced all I’ve been listening to has been those three bands. πŸ˜‚

Ah man, I’d love too see a show on the Hella Mega tour, but at this point it’s looking like the closest they’re actually coming to me is Chicago which is like 8 and a half hours away from me. Under other circumstances and if I had the money I’d be willing to travel farther than that to see show on this tour, but I kinda hate Chicago (been there once and I never want to go back πŸ˜‚) and don’t really want to go there. Plus it’s at Wrigley Field and as a person from the St. Louis area and therefore and obligated Cardinals fan, I feel like I’m not allowed to get there unless it’s to see the Cards play against the Cubs. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚ (That is a joke my friends! For real though I just wouldn’t want to travel to Chicago. πŸ˜‰)

So for now I guess I’m just going to have to be content with YouTube videos and people live streaming shows on Instagram. Hahaha that’s always better than nothing!

Anyway, back to what I was originally talking about, my weekend was spent putting more time and energy into the other things that I love and not worrying about the fact that I only ran two miles this week, or that in 8 weeks I’m running two half marathons in two days (yikes!), and how poorly I feel like this whole training cycle has gone so far. I took a break from all of that and I think it was much needed!!

Today I focused on eating better and re-hydrating. I definitely needed to do that! But for the most part I spent my day listening to the And That’s Why We Drink podcast and cleaning, doing chores around the house, and just kinda reveling in the last day I’m giving myself to not be a runner. Tomorrow I’ll go back to being a runner and attempting to salvage my training somehow (and worrying about getting a job and all of that fun stuff) but not today. Today was a chill, kick back and relax while occasionally cleaning stuff kinda day. A good way to wrap up my little break from everything, I think. 😊

Happy Sunday, everyone!

~Ashley

September 12th, 2019

I spent my whole morning calling and emailing people today. Fun times.

As I said in my last post, I’m trying to get hired into the local Clorox plant in my town that produces cat litter. Probably not a glamorous job and after the 3 month trial period the hours aren’t great (probably going to be working overnights. Not looking forward to that), but the pay is pretty decent! But most labor Julius like this are. So that’s good!

But it sounding like I’m going to be hired on, so I am grateful for that!

Anyway, I’m finally starting to feel better today! Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday were rough though. I felt terrible and I wasn’t sleeping well because I was constantly coughing. Last night was a lot better though and I was actually able to sleep. So that’s probably part of the reason I’m feeling better today! 😊

Definitely not 100% though. After literally NO running during the first half of this week I finally felt well enough to give it a shot today. So I hopped onto my treadmill and went into things with 0 expectations. Which was definitely a good thing! After 2 miles I was really tired and not in the “I’m having a really good workout” way, ya know? Probably because I am still sick. So I stopped there. Something is always better than nothing though! Plus running is a great way to clear out a snuffy nose and congested chest!

Anyway, I think I made the right decision stopping when I did. According to my Garmin I was working a lot harder than I actually was. Or than I thought I was at least. πŸ˜‚

That’s the thing with being sick or injured though. You’ve kinda got to roll with things and just listen to your body. Even if that means skipping a few runs. Because more likely than not you’ll end up getting back to running faster when you give yourself the rest you need instead of trying to power through it.

But learning to actually listen to your body and know what it needs is hard! I’ve been running for 6 years now and I still get it wrong sometimes! But you do eventually start to learn. The biggest thing I look for is having a kinda sore/scratchy throat. Even if I’m not sick or anything like that. For me personally, that’s always an indication that I need to back off! And once I do the sore/scratchy throat feeling goes away. I just think it’s interesting how connected the WHOLE body really is, and that something as small as a sore throat can be an indication that you’re pushing too hard. Or just need a little bit of extra rest or whatever.

Anyway, just a quick little update for today!

Until next time,

~Ashley
