Weekly Recap: May 28th-June 3rd, 2018

Monday:

On Monday Luke and I had a little Memorial Day party. Him, my brother-in-law, and one of my neighbor’s all smoked ribs and made it into a competition to see who’s were the best. Although I don’t think they ever came to a conclusion haha. But we spent the whole day outside hanging out and playing with the dogs and all of the small children that were running back and forth between our two yards. It was a fun day!

Tuesday:

  • Rest Day

Tuesday was not a fun day… First, my other neighbor’s dog killed my chickens, then I had to go to the dentist. Yuck. But I got temporary crowns put on both teeth that have had root canals and in about another week or so I should get the permanent ones put on. So at least those teeth have been taken care of.

Wednesday:

  • 2 miles

I always know its a weird week when my first run doesn’t happen until Wednesday. Haha but life happens and sometimes running kinda falls to the wayside. And that’s ok every once in a while! Anyway, did 2 hot and muggy miles on Wednesday. My gums got really irritated during the whole crown process thing the day before and I was told that they might take a while to calm down again. So my whole mouth was kinda achy and throbbed with every step I took, So 2 miles was all I had in me. But that was a whole lot better than nothing!!

img_2120

Thursday:

  • 3 miles
  • a few minutes of Pilates

I was actually feeling really good on Thursday! I slept in a little bit (mostly because I figured a little extra sleep might help my tooth situation heal a little faster 😉 ) and thought that getting out later to run was going to suck. Once the sun comes out and heats up the asphalt things can get slightly miserable haha. But surprisingly enough it wasn’t too bad and I had a lot of fun! Followed my run with some weeding in the garden and a short blogilates video. 🙂

Friday:

  • rest day

Feeling kinda tired on Friday. Probably from all of the craziness earlier this week. So, rest day. But 4 of our new chicks made in on Friday! Luke had ordered new ones from a hatchery online the day Ozzy killed our other ones. We were supposed to get 8 but 4 of them didn’t make it. But the rest should be here by next Wednesday. I’m still super duper pissed that we were soooo freaking close to getting eggs and now we’re all the way back to square one, but oh my gosh little 2 day old chicks are just too adorable!!

Saturday:

  • 4.36 miles
  • 20 minutes of yoga

I wanted to do 10, so obviously that didn’t go as planned…

I was so ready to do a long run on Saturday! I had everything prepped any laid out the night before, woke up at 5 am to try to beat the heat, ate, had my coffee, and then had to spend an extra hour and a half waiting out a thunderstorm… Don’t get me wrong, I love thunderstorms and have a really bad habit of running during them haha. But this one looked pretty bad, so I waited it out. And I’m glad I did. There were a bunch of downed tree limbs on the roads and I saw once house that had its shutters ripped off and another that had a window screen get broken by the storm. So obviously waiting was a good idea, but that meant I ate two and a half hours before my run instead of my usual one. That kinda had me feeling off. I shouldn’t have gone out feeling kinda hungry (that never ends well for me) but I did… And for some reason my gums were starting to hurt again during this run. I mean, they’ve been kinda achy ever since I got the crowns put on, like the dentist said they would, but it was just bothering me more on Saturday. Haha I usually do better when dealing with pain and discomfort, but mouth pain is the worst!!

So I ended up stopping waaay short of my goal, but I’m just gonna chalk it up to this whole week being weird and hectic and off, and hope that next week is better!

img_2224-1

Sunday:

  • 30 minutes of yoga

Not gonna lie, I was kinda super stoked that I didn’t have to run today haha. I mean, I guess I could have, but typically Sunday’s are my rest days and I like to keep it that way. Did a little bit of easy yoga though. That felt pretty good. 🙂

Total Weekly Mileage: 9.37

Meh, it was a weird week. I’m glad I did amount of running at all haha. 😉

Anyway happy Sunday, everyone! Here’s to a new week and a fresh start at things. 🙂

Well, Yesterday Was A Shit Day

It finally happened. We tried so fucking hard go prevent it. But obviously it wasn’t enough. So much time, money, and effort just got flushed down the toilet in what was probably a few short minutes. Yesterday Ozzy massacred our chickens.

Yup, after all of that extra work we did building that dog kennel around their coop he still found a way in and killed every single one. My poor chickens….

So that was just a terrible thing to find out first thing in the morning. Apparently he had slipped through the tiniest hole where the chain-link met the base of the kennel. And we had used fencing wire to attach the chain-link to the base. A lot of it. So he really had to squish himself to get in there, and honestly I kinda hope he hurt himself in the process. And of course this happened in the early morning before my dogs were outside or at the very least they would have been barking and maybe we could have done something. But nope. Around 6:30 ish my other neighbors saw that damn dog in our chicken coop because he figured out how to get in, but couldn’t figure out how to get back out again. But by then all of the chickens were dead anyway. So when Luke was getting into his truck to go to work and they stopped him and told him what happened. Luke went out there, let Ozzy out and made him go home, then came and told me.

It’s a good thing it was him to go do that and not me. I would have killed that damn dog. I grew up on  a farm and dogs that kill livestock become a huge problem. It’s a hard habit to break and most of the time if the dog cost you a shit ton of time, effort, and money then it doesn’t get to live. Especially knowing that it might keep doing it. That’s just the way things are. Hahaha and the neighbors who found him in my coop told me the same thing yesterday. I heard “that dog needs shot” by so many people yesterday. But I mean, it’s kinda true.

But that didn’t happen. Mostly because we do live in town and discharging a firearm inside of city limits is illegal. And for good reason. So he’s lucky. Although he was really pushing that luck because I had to chase him out of my yard 3 more times that morning, because he kept fucking coming back…Ugh so that was really annoying.

But anyway, I also had to go to the dentist to get temporary crowns put on a couple of my teeth yesterday. So yeah, it just wasn’t a fun day all around. But Luke took a partial sick day from work so he could take me because I hate the scientist and didn’t want to go alone. So he came back from work at about 11 am and we buried the chickens before we left. I was told specifically not to go out there that morning because it was just going to piss me off even more when I saw it and Luke new it. And it was pretty bad. He broke all of their necks, probably just one right after another. So I mean, it was kinda lucky that he didn’t rip them to pieces, so we didn’t have a huge bloody mess to clean up, but it still sucked.

We finished that job just in time to leave and go to my dentist appointment. It was a long one too. Haha felt like I was there forever! But I got the temporary crowns put on the two teeth I’ve had root canals done on and the more permanent crowns are being made. So that’s a step in the right direction and I’m glad that I was able to keep well, parts of those 2 teeth anyway. But that whole process irritated my gums and now today my mouth just kinda hurts. My jaw is also super stiff and sore from having to keep my mouth open for so long.

img_2106

So yeah, yesterday just really sucked. But to make me feel a little bit better Luke went to Barnes and Noble and got me Stephen King’s latest book while I was getting my teeth worked on. He’s the best!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 He also ordered more chicks online and they should be here at some point later this week. Fun fact; did you know the deliver chicks in the mail? That’s how my dad used to get his and how we had to do it this time, since Tractor Supply only sells them in the early spring. And that is great and all, but now we’re all the way back to square one an that really fucking sucks. We were getting so close to ours starting to lay eggs. Now we’ve got to start the whole process all over again.

img_2140

New reading material from Stephen King did cheer me up a little though. 🙂

Once we got home from my dental appointment Luke started keeping an eye out for Ozzy’s owner so he could go talk to him. He got home a little later than he usually does, but Luke finally caught him and told him what happened. Apparently he was pretty upset and offered to give Luke money for them, but Luke said he didn’t want money, told him he had already bough more chicks, so now he just wants Ozzy to stay where he belongs so that it doesn’t happen again. So now he’s really going to get to work on the fence between our yards that him and his cousin have been working to replace and now he doesn’t want Luke to cover half of the expenses anymore. We’ll still probably help him build it though. But hopefully a new fence will solve the problem. If not our neighbor said he’s also thinking about putting in one of those invisible dog fences just to be on the safe side. But no matter what we still have a few months to get it done, because the new chicks wont be able to be put outside until they’re older anyway.

So at least that’s getting taken care of now. It just really sucks that it took all 5 of our chickens being brutally killed for it to happen. I cannot even begin to express how mad I am about that. When you domesticate an animal like that and keep them locked up so they can’t get away and then end up using things they produce or even killing and eating them it’s your responsibility to keep them safe, happy, and healthy. It’s basically a mutual agreement you make with the animal; I keep you safe from predators. Provide you with comfortable shelter. Food and fresh, clean, water will always be available. If you get sick or injured, I’ll take care of it and give it proper medical attention. And in return, I get to use your products to feed myself and my family. And maybe that means you’ll die, but its my job to make sure you have a good life and everything you need before that happens.

For real, I take that shit really seriously and I couldn’t do it and I’m pissed. I let those poor chickens down and they paid for it by dying a terrifying and probably very painful death. I’m going to do better with the new chicks though. Luke feels the same way, so we’re going to be fortifying that chicken coop until is basically Fort Knox. And my neighbor is going to make sure that Ozzy doesn’t come back in our yard ever again. He also grew up on a farm type situation, so he knows and understands how devastating this loss was. I noticed that today he left Ozzy inside while he was at work, instead of in the back yard like he usually does.

Anyway, I’ve been trying to clean up the aftermath of the party that we had on Memorial Day. Our backyard is pretty trashed and the house is a mess too. But my mouth is currently unhappy and that’s making it difficult for me to want to do much. I can usually handle pain, but mouth pains is just awful. But today I got the Green Day mug and tank top that I had bough online last week in the mail today, and that did make me feel a little bit better. 😉

img_2139-2

I suppose that’s all for today.

I hope everyone had a good Memorial Day Weekend!

Lets play a fun little game!!

My dog.

My dog.

My dog.

img_1863

Not my dog. 😆

img_1867

Now in the morning whenever I let my dogs out, Ozzy comes right over. Haha I guess he gets bored and lonely while my neighbor (his owner) is at work. But this morning after he hung out in my yard for a little bit and bothering my chickens, he hopped my fence and was running around the easement….So I spent 15 minutes trying to get him back into my yard so at the very least he’d be safe and wouldn’t get hurt or lost. So eventually I got him back into my yard, made all of my dogs go inside, so he got bored in my yard and went back home. Oh man, this is getting a little annoying. I’m not about to keep an eye on that dog all day everyday. I like him, and he’s very sweet, but he’s not my dog (although he seems to think he is whenever my neighbor isn’t home, because he tries to come into my house when I let my dogs in), and not my responsibility. I’d feel terrible if something were to happen to him, but I can’t spend all day checking up on him and making sure he’s where he should be. Hopefully once the new fence gets built between our two yards his escape artist antic will stop.

Since I had to spend some time wrangling a dog that doesn’t belong to me, I got out on the road a little later than I would have liked. But luckily I had only planned on doing 2 easy miles today, so it wasn’t too big of a deal. It’s not like the weather would have really been much better anyway. It was 73 degrees, 85% humidity, and sunny. Yuck. That on top of the fact that I’m still kinda red and itchy from the antibiotics that I took one whole dose of for my root canal made today’s run not so fun. But I did it and that’s all that matters. 😉

img_1886

Seriously though, penicillin and cindamycin give hives, and azithromycin gave me a rash similar to what the other two antibiotics do, but it was much more mild. So when the dentists office called to check up on me yesterday (which I though was really nice) I told them about it and was told to stop taking the azithromycin. So, totally not sure what kind of antibiotics I would take if I had an actual infection. I guess I’d just have to tough it out. But luckily the last time I actually had an infection that needed treated with antibiotics was when I was 13 and had an appendectomy. I don’t remember a lot from my time in the hospital for that. I was on a lot of morphine haha. But I think they might have just continued to give me penicillin and just kept an eye on the hives it gave me. Because I remember being itchy the whole time I was there and don’t remember ever getting a different antibiotic. Like I said though, I was on a lot of morphine so I could be totally wrong about that haha.

img_1851

It’s kinda hard to see in this photo. Especially if you don’t know what you’re looking for. But I’m still a little red, bumpy, and itchy from the azithromycin I took 2 days ago.

Luckily a benadryl helped with the itching on Monday, but they make me so tired that I haven’t taken another since then haha. But the rash is definitely going away and not as bad as it was on Monday, so that’s good. 🙂

My mouth/tooth area is feeling a little bit more sore today that it did after I got the root canal on Monday and yesterday. It got to the point where it woke me up a few times last night. I think I might have bit down on it weird at some point. Maybe even while I was sleeping. That and I haven’t been doing a good job of taking the pain medication the dentist gave me. He told me it would probably be a good idea to take one in the morning for the next few days as a preventive thing and then one every 6-8 hours after that as needed. But I only took one before I went to bed last night. Woops haha. I just don’t like taking medication, especially pain medication before I run. It’s only an 800 mg ibuprofen, but still… Hahaha and the endorphins from my run seemed to help with the discomfort I was having this morning anyway! 🙂 Probably going to take another one before bed tonight though and hopefully I’ll be able to sleep a little better tonight than I did last night.

So since I had the root canal on Monday, I’ve been trying to stick with soft, easy to eat food. That meant that yesterday pretty much all I ate was 2 muffins and some rice and guacamole. Yeah, that wasn’t all that great…Easy to eat though haha! So today I made a point to eat some stuff that was a little more nutritious, including a berry/oatmeal smoothie, more rice and guacamole (this is one of my favorite combinations right now haha. Trust me, it’s delicious) with a fried egg this time, and a pint of ice cream. Oh and Luke made hamburgers for dinner so I had to had to have one of those. They were delicious! 🙂 But at the very least I got a little more nutritious than yesterday haha.

But anyway. Other than my tooth being a little bit sore and it being hot in general, my day has been really good! I plan on running a little further tomorrow, so I’m gonna have to wake up earlier tomorrow, so hopefully I’ll sleep a little bit better tonight.

But anyway, I suppose that’s all for today!

Happy hump day!

Another Root Canal Done

Finally got another tooth taken care of yesterday!

img_1843

I went to a different dentist this time and it was a lot cheaper haha. Plus this guy was a lot faster and is actually willing to work with Luke and I because of our insurance. So now my two worst teeth have been mostly fixed. Now they just need crowns. The one that got a root canal in February still doesn’t have a crown on it because the other dentist was waaaay over charging and it was just too expensive. But this guy that I’m going to now is going to do it for less money, so next Tuesday both of those teeth will be completely taken care of. And then we’re going to start talking about fillings for my other teeth. That’s probably not going to be cheap. Especially since we’re officially out of dental insurance until next year and any more dental work that either Luke and I need done will have to come out of pocket. So hopefully neither of us need anything crazy done in the next year…

But so far I’m feeling pretty good today! My mouth doesn’t really hurt at all! The spot where I got Novocaine shots is a little sore, but other than that its fine which is great! The only problem is that, yet again, I had a bad reaction to the antibiotics they gave me. I’m allergic to penicillin and clindamycin so they gave me azithomycin. But last night that made my stomach hurt pretty bad and this morning I woke up with a rash. Luckily it wasn’t as bad and the hives that penicillin and clindamycin give me, but still. It sucks…So I took a benadryl and that seemed to help. But yeah, not sure what’s up with my body and antibiotic, but it sure doesn’t like them.

Since I had to get more dental work done I didn’t run yesterday or today. Honestly I probably could have today, but the antibiotics just made me feel gross and I didn’t feel like doing it haha. But hopefully I’ll feel better tomorrow.

But anyway, that’s what’s currently going on with me. Well that and the fact that my neighbor’s dog Ozzy just spends most of the day in our yard now. Luckily Luke and I have yelled at him enough that he mostly leaves the chickens alone now, and he just come’s over and hangs out usually until my neighbor gets home. Haha that’s kinda weird, but at least he’s not really causing problems anymore. Still though, I can’t wait for them to finish replacing the fence and he can’t get over here anymore. I still worry about him hurting the chickens and Finn puts up with him now, but I still don’t think he’s a fan of Ozzy being in his yard.

Alrighty then, that’s all for today! Happy Tuesday everyone!

First Root Canal Is Done!

Good new! Yesterday the specialist that I was referred to had a cancellation yesterday, and was able to get one of the root canals I needed done! Whew, I’m glad that’s taken care of. But it literally took ALL of the available money we had through our dental insurance, so I’ve just gotta hope the other tooth that needs one holds up for another year without any issues. Because there is no way I’ll be able to get it done without the insurance money. But oh well. At least one is done. And in a week or two I’ll have to get a crown on it and it should hopefully be good to go for a while!

img_9670

I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy to get a medical procedure done haha.

Anyway, the whole process was super easy. The only thing I felt were the Novocaine shots, and even those weren’t bad. We waited a few minutes for those to kick in, and then the dentist was in and out in about an hour. Not bad!! So, I told him about the allergic reaction I was having to the clindamycin the other dentist gave me for the infection I had because of the tooth. He was kinda surprised about that, apparently not many people are allergic to that particular antibiotic. But he said since the root canal removed all of the infected tissue I should be fine not taking any more antibiotics. So that’s good! Now I don’t have to experiment anymore with antibiotics. Haha apparently my body just doesn’t like them.

img_9673

Can you tell that the right side of my face was super numb in this photo?

Also, can we talk about how dentists just hand out hydrocodone like it’s candy? The first dentist I saw gave me a script for 20, to hold me over until I could see the specialist because no one was really sure when that was going to happen. I had that one filled and took one because I had been having trouble eating, but that was it. Then after the root canal the specialist gave me another script for 16 more, even though I had filled out on one of their forms that I already had some. Like, there is no way in hell that I need that many pain pills! So I’m not having the other script filled, but jeez, no wonder there’s an opioid crisis in this country. They’re just being handed out like its no big deal. I just thought that was crazy…

But anyway, happy Valentine’s Day! I hope you have a wonderful Wednesday!

My First Dental Appointment In 10 Years, Game Plan For My Teeth, And A Toe Update

Yup. You read that right. Until yesterday I hadn’t been to the dentist in 10 years. I got my bottom set of wisdom teeth removed when I was 16, and that was it. Mostly because dental work is freaking expensive. Actually healthcare in general here in the USA is freaking expensive and the whole system, including insurance, can be pretty dumb. Hence the reason I haven’t been to a dentist in 10 years or to a GP in 4 years. I do got to the gynecologist once a year though. That is 100% covered by my insurance, including birth control (as long as I get the generic brand. I’m pretty sure I’d have to pay a little bit to get the name brand. But the generic works for me, so I’m gonna continue having my insurance pay for it). So at least there’s that!

Anyway, my teeth are kinda bad haha. When I was a teenager I didn’t exactly take care of them…I try to take better care of them now, but maybe it’s just too little, too late. My mom’s also told me that my dad’s teeth aren’t so great either, so I might have inherited that from him. Either way, they aren’t great and I’ve had a few (one in particular) that are getting particularly bad. Bad enough that I absolutely had to get them looked at. So finally got a dentist appointment set up to look and the problem, assess what needs to be done, and then refer me to a specialist. Good thing that got set up when it did, because a few days later things really started going downhill for me.

The particularly bad tooth was definitely infected. That was something I was almost positive of. And then on Saturday I got a fever and the pain in that tooth was so bad that I couldn’t really eat much. But since I had a fever I didn’t really feel like eating anyway. Luckily it wasn’t a high fever or anything, although I had terrible body aches. I think they might have been the worst I’ve ever had! My temperature finally came down to my normal of 97.5 on Sunday, so thank goodness that was short lived, but I still couldn’t really eat much. Sad face…

img_9613-1.jpg

My fever on Sunday only got up to 101.7. So not too bad. Haha as a kid I was notorious for getting super high fevers (I’m talking 104, 105 degrees) and I was worried about it getting super high and that would have been terrible.

On Monday I was still having trouble eating, but I saw the dentist at 2 pm and he solved that problem for me haha! But first I got a few x-rays taken of my problem teeth, he look at those and at the teeth themselves and told me what was up and what my options were. After much discussion about what our insurance will or will not cover, and how much money our insurance will actually pay, we finally had a game plan. So, I need two root canals, one extraction, and some other minor work. But I cannot afford to get that all done at once. So for now I’m going to get a root canal and then a crown done in the tooth that’s really causing me problems, then wait a year until our insurance will reset and we’ll have more money available through them, and then get the second root canal done, and then just go from there. So at least we have a plan! 🙂

So the dentist has referred me to a specialist to get the root canal done, so I need to set that up, but for now he’s put me on antibiotics and pain meds. Specifically, I’m supposed to be taking clidamycin once every 8 hours, and a hydrocodone every 4-6 hours as needed. First off, I didn’t realize he was gonna prescribe me pain meds! I figured he’d tell me to just keep taking ibuprofen. Although, the problem with pain meds is that I don’t like taking them haha. Back when I was 13 and had an appendectomy the hospital sent me home with codeine that I took maybe once or twice. I just didn’t like the way it made me feel. And when I was 16 I had my wisdom teeth they sent me home with Vicodin. I took that twice. It made me puke both times, and I hate puking more than anything in the world, so after that I stopped taking it and just suffered through the pain. That was kinda terrible, but I lived haha. So at first I was kinda skeptical about taking the hydrocodone, but I really wanted to eat, so I took one last night and holy cow did it work!!

Initally right after I took it I was kinda freaking out (hello anxiety) thanks to all of the issues pain meds have given me before. But after about half an hour I felt pretty darn great!! Hydrocodone makes one of my sisters really loopy (she had to take it for her hip dysplasia) so I was wondering if I was going to get the same affect. I didn’t though. I was just felt super float-y and calm and kinda dizzy. But not bad dizzy. It was the dizzy feeling you get when you’re drunk, but without all the grossness that comes after that hahaha. Not gonna lie, it was a fun experience. I think mostly because it did kinda shut my anxiety up for a little bit. Oh and I was finally able to eat, so that was fucking great!! It also made my probably broken toe feel really good too, so that was a nice little benefit. 🙂 But so far I just took the one at around 3:40 pm yesterday and I’m still pretty much pain free in my tooth, so that’s pretty freaking great. But I’m sure the antibiotics are kicking in and helping that situation as well.

But unfortunalty, I had to stop taking the antibiotics after 2 whole doses (one last night and one this morning). So, I’m allergic to penicillin. I learned that when I was in the hospital after my appendectomy. It made me break out into hives. Which of course I informed the dentist of, hence the clindamycin. But it turns out I’m allergic to that too. A few hours after taking my second dose this morning I started breaking out in a rash. It’s not too bad, but it itches and is super annoying… So I called the pharmacist and then the dentist earlier and they both put me down as allergic to it in their records and now the dentist is calling the pharmacist to try to figure out what I should take, and I guess one of them will call be back when they do. Damn…I was so prepared too! I’ve got this gross probiotic supplement that I’ve taken twice now, and  also have some greek yogurt on the ready too. Haha oh well, at least I’ll be prepared for when they figure out another kind of antibiotic to give me.

img_9654

Finn thought he wanted some of this gross probiotic supplement. Finn was wrong.

And on top of all of that, my toe is probably broken. Well, I’m thinking I probably just fractured it, but either way, I’m just having all sorts of fun right now…So the toe thing happened last Wednesday, when I slipped, fell, and hit it on the edge of my couch. Oh and then ran 4 miles on it because initially it only hurt a little bit and wasn’t bruised or swollen or anything. That was probably a bad idea and I haven’t run since. I have been able to stationary bike a bit though, so at least there’s that. 🙂 Today most of the swelling has gone down, but it’s still really really bruised. Haha but it doesn’t hurt at all this morning. Thanks hydrocodone!! I’ve been doing my best to stay off of it, icing it, keeping it elevated, and taping it to the toe next to it. So hopefully it’ll heal quickly. But so far it seems to be taking it’s sweet time…

img_9658-1

Haha see that purple line going down my toe? I’m pretty sure that’s the exact spot my poor toe hit the couch. 🙂

So in hopes to speed up the healing process I made some bone broth over the weekend, using the recipe from Run Fast Eat Slow. I’ve just been drinking it by it’s self, and it is really really good!! Not sure if it’s actually going to help speed up the healing process or not, but it’s suppsed to be full of calcium, magnesium, collagen, and all sorts of other good stuff, so I figure it just might help. 😉

img_9563

So yeah, that’s my life currently. I’ve got a probably fractured toe, a definitely infected tooth (which is getting taken care of soon), and now I’m having an allergic reaction to my antibiotics, which I’ve had to stop taking. Oh man I’m having a hell of a time right now…

I suppose now I’m gonna go slather myself in topical benadryl because I don’t have the oral kind, and cannot go obtain any because my husband and I only have one car, and he’s at work. And wait and see what kind of antibiotic they’re planning on trying on me next…Hopefully they’ll find one that works for me.

I hope you’re Tuesday is fantastic!
