Weekly Recap: April 2nd-8th, 2018

I managed to impress myself this week! I did pretty good running-wise, considering we weren’t home for most of Monday and had a hand injury that kinda slowed me down earlier in the week, but I still got a decent amount of running done! πŸ™‚ Thanks to that hand injury I didn’t really get any strength work or stretching done. I just haven’t been able to use it very much and that makes doing most things more difficult. Still though, I’m happy with how this week went.

Monday:

Monday was an interesting day! It was our last day in Illinois so we squeezed in quite a few things before we had to go home! Luke, two of his brother’s, me, and my brother spent a lot of time doing all sorts of fun things together, before we had to start heading back home. I talk about all of that stuff here, if you’re interested.

Tuesday:

  • Rest Day

After all of the excitement on Monday I needed a rest day! So I took one. πŸ˜‰ I spent most of Tuesday drinking water because I was feeling dehydrate, resting, and tending to my hand. Haha on Monday I got bit by a dog. It wasn’t that big of a deal, but my hand was sore, swollen, and I pretty much couldn’t do anything with it.

Wednesday:Β

  • 2.5 miles easy miles

Yay! I finally got to wear my super spiffy new Zensah compression socks!! Haha they were actually delivered on Monday, but obviously I didn’t do any running until Wednesday. πŸ˜‰ It’s not really feeling much like spring anymore, here in Kansas. It was pretty cold on Wednesday. But I’m already looking forward to all of the watermelon that will be devoured this summer! So obviously I needed socks to represent that haha.

Thursday:

  • 3 miles

Thursday ended up being the one warm day this week. In the afternoon it ended up being in the 60’s! It was kinda nice running in the warm sunny weather, but I still prefer the cold. πŸ˜‰ Anyway, I’m hoping my peach tree hold up during this wacky weather! It’s getting ready to bloom and I really want to get some peaches this year!!

Friday:

  • 2.27 miles

Another chilly day on Friday. I wasn’t complaining though. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, I’ve been reading Jeff Galloway’s book β€œThe Run Walk Run Method”, so on Friday I decided to try out the cadence drill in that’s in this book, because oh man, my cadence could use all the help it can get! I did modify it a little bit though, since I was doing it on its own instead of as a warm up for a speed workout (as the book suggests you can do this drill for). So I warmed up with a mile of easy running instead of 10 minutes (I’m slow. It’s a fact.) and did 10 reps instead of the recommended 3-7 lol. And then did another 1/2 a mile of easy running for a cool down. But like I said, I’m slow and I wanted to hit at least 2 miles today, so mission accomplished on that front! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ˜„ It was a fun little drill sequence though! And I’ll probably end up using the actual recommendations as a warm up for a speed session every once in a while. πŸ˜„πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Also, this was my lunch, and it was delicious as always. 🍞πŸ₯‘πŸ…πŸ³πŸ˜‹

Saturday:

  • 8 miles

You know how not all runs are rainbows and sunshine? Well actually, for me most of theΒ  running I do is super hard. Sometimes it’s fun and I usually like the way I feel when the run is done, but those rainbows and sunshine runs are very few and far in between. Saturday’s 8 miler though was the rare exception! Nothing but rainbows, sunshine, happy thoughts and feelings, even though it was a cold, cloudy, and windy day. It was fucking great!

Sunday:

  • Rest Day

Yay! Yesterday’s run was fun, but boy am I tired today! Totally worth it though. πŸ˜‰ Spent the morning throwing together some crock pot chili, did a little bit of cleaning in the afternoon, and spent the rest of the afternoon reading Alex Hutchinson’s new book Endure. My hand was feeling almost back to normal today and I probably should have done some stretching, but meh, I was tired and didn’t feel like doing it haha. That’s not a good excuse, but oh well. Today was still a good day. πŸ™‚

Total Weekly Mileage: 15.78

Not bad all things considered! Need to keep that number moving up though! My main running goal for the year is to build up to 40-50 miles per week. Obviously I’ve still got a way to go and I’m a little farther behind than I would like to be thanks to some setbacks earlier this year, but this week was definitely a step in the right direction! πŸ™‚

Happy Sunday everyone!

Fall Is Almost Here, Two Short Runs, An Injury Update, Compression Gear, and Another Furry Friend

First and foremost, #ThrowbackThursday anyone? πŸ˜‰ Ah man, throwback Thursday never ceases to amuse me. I just think it’s fun to take a look back at past life experiences, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they might be.

So, since fall is almost here and I’m so super duper excited about that, I went perusing through the camera roll on my phone this morning looking for the photos of my jack-o-lanterns from last year, because they were pretty darn spiffy if you ask me!!

I was so super excited about how the 13.1 pumpkin turned out! I was kinda worried about it because I thought it was going to be hard to tell what it was, but once it was lit up it looked pretty good! And look at all the hair I used to have!! Haha not gonna lie, looking back I kinda regret cutting it all off. But it was sooo much nicer not having to deal with all of that hot hair over the summer. But anyways, now I’ve got to figure out what I want to do with this years pumpkins! Haha obviously I’ve still got some time, but I take this stuff very seriously! πŸ˜‰ We’re starting to get close to my favorite time of year and I’m so super stoked!!

TRUE!!!!!

So now that we’re into the middle of September we’re starting to experience a bit of fall like weather in the morning/evening. The highs in the afternoon have been in the 80’s though so that still kinda sucks, but we’ll get to the colder weather eventually. πŸ™‚ But anyways, the nice weather in the morning is really reallyΒ reallyΒ making me miss running. Fall running is the best running (except once winter rolls around, then I’ll spend all season telling you that winter running is the best πŸ˜‰ ) and right now I definitely feel like I’m missing out!!

I have managed to do two very short runs this week. 2 miles on Monday and 2 more miles on Wednesday. That’s definitely not the kind of running I should be doing considering that I’m supposed to be training for my 3rd half marathon, but at the moment it’s the only kind of running I can do. And it’s still totally better than not running at all!!

Unfortunately the 4 miles that I’ve run this week were not pain free miles. During both runs my knee started to ache a bit during the second mile and on Wednesday I felt it a little bit in my shin as well. That was no bueno…but it’s still not as bad as it was last month and I like to think it’s finally starting to get better. Healing this whole situation has definitely been a slow process, but I’m glad that it seems to be getting better without the help of a doctor. Because IΒ reallyΒ didn’t want to have to go see one haha.

So I think I’ve mentioned before that I’ve been taking R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation) very seriously in order to get this thing taken care of. Obviously the rest has come in the form of not running, but I’ve also been trying to take it easy and walk a little less if it starts bothering me. I was icing it for a while but that doesn’t seem to be doing anything for it anymore. And honestly I’m pretty sure icing is really only effective for the first like, 48 hours or something like that after you’ve been injured (I’m not entirely sure about that though, so don’t quote me on it. πŸ˜‰ ). So that brings me to compression and elevation. As far as elevation goes, I’ve just been propping my leg up with a pillow in the evening whenever i’m sitting down watching TV, but my compression game has definitely been VERY strong!

I’m sporting a very old compression sock and a very new compression knee sleeve in this photo.

So Luke’s just as determined to get me healthy again as quickly as possible so he’s been making me experiment with some new gear haha. First he got me the knee sleeve pictured above. Oh boy does that thing work! I didn’t realize that my knee was actually hurting while I was walking until I started wearing this thing around haha (this right here is why I have to be super careful when it comes to injures. I have a ridiculous pain tolerance and sometimes I don’t notice that anythings going on until after it goes away and I start feeling normal again…). And after wearing it for about a week I was able to do my two short runs this week, which was obviously a huge improvement over not being able to run at all. πŸ™‚ So because I had quite a bit of success with the knee brace, Luke thought hey, if a little bit of compression worked, why not go with EVEN MORE compression. So he came home with a pair of full on compression tights for me the other day haha. I kinda wish he hadn’t spent so much money on me for this stuff, compression gear (especially these tights, holy shit) isn’t cheap…but I mean, they are some super spiffy looking tights. πŸ™‚

I’ve only worn them once, so at this point there’s really no telling if they made a difference, but they’re still super spiffy. πŸ™‚

So all of that actually came about because I had ordered myself a new pair of Zensah compression calf sleeves (like I said, my compression socks are really old, and I’ve had to cut the toes off of both pairs that I have because they make my toes uncomfortable, so I figured sleeves were the way to go. πŸ˜‰ ) and a sports bra at some point last week, I think? The only problem with that is that Zensah’s warehouse is located in southern Florida so they had to close up shop and evacuate because of hurricane Irma, so I guess they’re not entirely sure when they’ll be able to ship out anything. And like, obviously that’s totally understandable and I don’t mind waiting, but Luke is not a patient person and apparently that applies to me as well, and that’s how I ended up with even more compression gear hahahahaha.

So like, I know compression gear is one of those things that some people absolutely swear by and other people just think is a placebo kinda thing, but it’s always seemed to work for me so I’m just gonna roll with it! πŸ™‚

Whew, alrighty then! Last on my agenda of this to talk about today is our newest furry friend! Everyone, meet Alfred!

img_6368

So kind of on a whim I guess, Luke decided that our other ferret, Bruce, needed a friend. So he went and got him one last night. Hahaha if you haven’t noticed, once Luke sets his mind on something he just goes and does it. And that’s how we ended up with another ferret. It’s really funny because everyone thinks all of the animals were my idea (because I’m the huge animal lover who was raised on a farm), but aside from the cats and Lily, Luke’s the one who went out and got the rest of them haha. I mean, I’m not complaining though. πŸ˜‰

At first we were both a little wary about introducing them to each other. Luckily we have two ferret cages so if it didn’t go well we could have kept them separate, but it looks like that’s not going to be a problem. They pretty much liked each other right off the bat and are already becoming fast friends. So I guess Luke was right, getting Bruce a friend was a good idea. And I mean, what good is Bruce Wayne without Alfred Pennyworth? πŸ˜‰

img_6385

Okey dokey then! That’s all I’ve got to talk about for today! I’ve been doing a terrible job at keeping up with everyone lately, so what’s going on with you? Are you excited about fall? Any up coming races, spiffy new gear, new furry friends, new PR’s, or are you sidelined with an injury as well?

Anyways, I hope everyone has a happy Friday eve, a great Friday tomorrow, and an even better weekend!

Friday Fives: Running Gear Wishlist

Ah running gear. It’s one of my all time favorite things. From technical materials, GPS watches that can calculate your VO2 max, feather-light shoes, headphones that are absolutely guaranteed not to fall out of your ears, compression garments, and t-shirts with sarcastic sayings; I love it all! Now if only it weren’t all so darn expensive…

Haha I’ll admit it, I can go a little bit overboard when it comes to gear. But come on, I absolutely need 3 more pairs of running shorts. You can never have too many pairs of running shorts! Oh and while we’re at it, I could definitely use 5 more pairs of brightly colored compression socks. I want to be able to mix and match them. Ooooh and look at this tank top! I know I already have 8 million of them shoved into my closet, but this one is purple! And race shirts totally count as gear right? Yeah, so I’m going to need to run ALL of the races in order to obtain ALL of the t-shirts.

All right, all right. That may have been a little bit of an over-exaggeration. But there have been a few times when I went shopping specifically for “real” clothes, and came back with more running gear. πŸ˜‰

That being said, there are a few things out there that super spiffy, I totally want, and a few of them are even functional!!

1. FlipBelt

I seriously need one of these!! Or at least something similar, because I can never find running gear with sufficient pockets!!! Seriously, every pair of running shorts/tights I have has one itsy bitsy pocket that I can barely fit a gel packet in, or they just completely lack pockets, which is no bueno. I want to be able to carry my phone, fuel, house key, chapstick, and other essentials without having to resort to shoving them in interesting place likes my socks. I’ve seriously gotten back from a run with scratches all over my shins because I kept a packet of Honey Stinger chews in my compression sock. It wasn’t pretty…

2. Zensa Compression ankle/calf sleeves

I for real want these so bad!! Ever pair of compression socks I’ve ever worn has made my toes fall asleep or just super uncomfortable. I’ve thought about getting just the calf sleeves, but sometimes me heels get sore and compression socks tend to help, so I’ve resorted to cutting the toes off of my regular compression socks. That way my calves/heels are still getting some compression but my toes aren’t uncomfortable. The only problem with that is that now the parts that I cut bunch up whenever I put shoes on and it’s super annoying. These would totally solve all of my issues.

3. World’s Okayest Runner Tank

I need this because reasons. πŸ˜‰

4. Oiselle Black Widow Sports Bra

I literally only want this bra because I think it looks nifty! And I kinda really need some new sports bras haha. I’ve had one of mine for going on 3 years now and that’s just waaaay too long to have any kind of bra, really.

5. Nike Free Run

Because no one can have too many pairs of running shoes, right? Plus Nike Free’s are my preferred running shoe, and this particular pair is pretty badass!

Do you have your eye on any awesome running gear?
