Friday Fives: Stocking Stuffers For The Runner In Your Life

It’s that time of year again! Stressing over making sure you have a little something to give to your friends, family, coworkers, etc. It can be tough! But worry not my friends, you’re friendly neighborhood runner is here to give you some stocking stuffer ideas for the runner in your life. 🙂

1. Their Favorite On The Run Fuel

I’m always up for trying new things, so personally I don’t mind getting something that’s not my favorite or that I’ve never tried before, but if your runner is a little bit more picky you might have to ask if you don’t already know. But some really popular brands are GU, Jelly Belly Sport’s Beans, and Honey Stinger.

Anyway, I know I never mind getting on the run fuel! It’s something that I could always use, and it’s relatively inexpensive to buy one or two gels, or waffles, or whatever, and you can usually find them at any local sporting good’s store.

Honey Stinger waffles are my personal favorite. 🙂

2. Gloves

If there’s one piece of running gear that I could consistently use more of, it would probably be cheap, throwaway gloves. Now, there are some fancier gloves out there; touch screen gloves, wind resistant gloves, moisture wicking gloves, etc. And those are all super neat! But honestly I’d rather receive a pair of gloves I could ditch at the starting line of a Turkey Trot, Santa Shuffle, or a Hangover Half Marathon (don’t let me lie to you, the only holiday themed running event I’ve ever done was a “run with Santa 5k” in my town haha. But I’d like to participate in others eventually. 😉 ). Also, I have a bad habit of blowing my nose into my hand (and I know I’m not the only runner who does this!!) and I don’t think I’d want to do that into a pair of $40 gloves haha.

3. Custom Race Bib Ornament

Did your runner crush a new PR, finish a big goal race, or just has a race bib that they particularly like? I think these race bib ornaments are super neat and a great way to remember a big race!! Also, shout out to my family and friends who might be reading this, looking for gift ideas for me. I think these are super duper neat and I don’t have one hahahaha. 😉 😉 😉

Goneforarun.com actually has a bunch of cool custom race bib stuff, I just think the ornaments are particularly neat. 🙂

4. Runner Nation Coffee Mug

Fact; runners love coffee. Also fact; I’m not entirely sure how true that first “fact” is hahaha. 😉 But for real though, in my experience, a lot of runners do enjoy a nice cup of coffee. Especially on a day when they have to wake up particularly early or before a long run when a little bit of caffeine is definitely appreciated. And here’s another “fact” for ya, coffee tastes better when it’s in a neat mug. 😉

5. A StrideBox Gift Subscription

Now a-days there’s a subscription box for everyone and everything, right? Well running is no exception!! StrideBox is a subscription box that comes full of lots of fun goodies for before, during, and after a run!!

So I’m not gonna lie, I was always a bit hesitant about subscription boxes because I was worried that after a few months the products that come in the box would get kinda lame after a while, but that hasn’t been my experience with StrideBox! It always comes full of all sorts of neat stuff to try! And good news!! If you use the code RunningRebel10, which is good until 12/24/17, you can get 10% off of a 3 or 6 month gift subscription for the runner in your life! Or for yourself, because you deserve a gift too, and I swear the day StrideBox comes in the mail is basically like Christmas morning. 😉

Again, you can use the code RunningRebel10 to get 10% off of a 3 or 6 month gift subscription!! 🙂 Good until 12/14/17.

So there you have it! Some nifty gift ideas for the runner in your life! Or at least I think they are. Fellow runners, what are some gift ideas that you’d like to receive or give during this holiday season? 🙂

July 12th, 2017

I’m trying to get back into my usual summer routine, but that’s kinda hard to do after vacation. Especially since I wasn’t exactly into my summer routine before we left haha. Oh  well, It was a little rough getting up at 5 am and then getting stuff done, but I managed. 🙂

So I began my morning with a run, of course! It was a super short, super slow 2 miles, but still better than nothing. 😉 I kinda wanted to go farther than that, but we’re still under a heat adviory here in Kansas, so I needed to get all three dogs walked before it started to get too hot outside. But this was the first time I’ve run since July 3rd, so I’m just happy that I did something. Even if it was short and slow.

img_4642

After my run I got to work walking the dogs. I would probably save myself a lot of time and effort if I would walk at least 2 of them at the same time (there’s absolute no way I’d be able to walk all 3 at the same time haha), but I prefer to walk them by themselves because it gives me a chance to spend a little one on one time with each of them and that’s definitely good for them. Plus whenever I try walking 2 of them at a time, no matter what combination, they gang up on me and end up dragging me down the street haha. That usually doesn’t happen whenever I take them one at a time. So I walked Lily, then Finn, and last but not least Dean. So they all got out and got a little bit of exercise before it got too hot and I think they’re all happy about that. I don’t think they got walked at all while Luke and I were in Florida and that tends to make them go a little crazy.

img_4651

Dean and Finn were very happy to see Lily and I after we got done with our walk (probably because they knew it would be their turn soon).

After the dogs were taken care of I got to work on the garden. I had done some weeding yesterday, but I’ve still got sooo much to do…Luckily I got my weed eater working today so that made my life a little bit easier. 🙂 But first I had to water everything. Luckily my plants are all starting to perk up a little bit after I watered them yesterday and this morning, so I’m thinking the plants that are left are going to be just fine. 🙂 After that I did a bit of hoeing, weed pulling, and then I basically mowed around my tomato plants with the weed eater. I didn’t quite finish weed eating the whole garden plot though. I guess the battery that’s on the weed eater isn’t the best, so it dies pretty quickly. I had time to let it charge a little and then continue on once, but after that it was just starting to get too hot for me to stay outside much longer, so after it died a second time I decided to call it a day. I still feel like I got a pretty decent amount of work done and hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to get even more accomplished. 🙂

img_4656

My tomato plants (left) are huge and looking good! My banana pepper plants (right) are super small, but they’re growing decent sized peppers so I guess it’s all good. 🙂

img_4659

Finn is terrified of the weed eater, but every time I turned it off he had to come make sure I was alright haha.

So yeah, I got a run done, the dogs walked, and the garden tended to. I’ve showered, cleaned both of my new tattoos (which are itchy, but healing nicely), eaten breakfast twice (before and after my run/gardening adventures 😉 ), and wrote this blog post. Now I need to clean the rabbit cage, probably record a vlog since it’s been a while since I’ve done that, and then after that I’m thinking a nap is going to be necessary! But so far I’m having a very productive day and I’m very happy about that!

The itching/peeling phase is seriously the worst part about getting a new tattoo.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

My Name Is Ashley And I’m Addicted To Caffeine

Processed with Rookie Cam

No seriously, it’s bad…

Back in high school I used to have a hardcore soda problem. During my freshman and sophomore years, on normal day, I’d drink one to two, or sometimes 3 bottles of soda a day. Wild cherry Pepsi was my drink of choice. Ugh just thinking about that shit now kinda makes me want to puke haha, but I guess we all make bad decisions sometimes. Especially as teenagers/young adults, because it only got worse from their.

Around my junior and senior year of high school energy drinks started getting really popular. Before school my friends and I would stop at quick trip to get 32 ounce cups full of “Rooster Booster”, it wasn’t unusual to see someone with a can Red Bull or Full Throttle (my personal favorite) at lunch, and of course all of these energy drinks would get mixed with alcohol over the weekends (dangerous and stupid, but like I said, we all make bad decisions). And so the addiction to caffeine began.

Obviously I didn’t really care too much about my health back then, and it’s no wonder I ended up almost hitting 180 pounds after high school. But after I graduated and started working at a Walgreen’s I started becoming a little more health conscious. At one point we had a mini weight watchers challenge that we could buy into, and whoever lost the biggest percentage of weight got the pot. I guess my participation in that is actually what got me started on my whole “weight loss journey” which eventually got me into running, but that’s a story for another day. Because I was participating in that weight loss challenge I looked for any places I could cut out extra calories and soda was the first thing to go. I couldn’t give up the energy drinks though, I’m was very much addicted to caffiene at this point, so I switched to those huge cans of Monster that we’re low carb and would drink 2 of them a day.

Eventually I ended up getting married and moving to an apartment Kansas and that’s when I really started to look at what I was putting into my body. I knew those energy drinks we’re pretty bad for me, even if they were low in calories. I wasn’t a fan of coffee back then though, so I decided to kick caffeine for good. After being kinda tired and grumpy for a few days, and along with drinking a lot of low caffeine/caffeine free tea, I officially kicked my caffeine habit.

And then I started getting really serious about running. Serious enough that I quite using the treadmill at the apartment complexes fitness center and started running on the trail that literally went right behind the apartments. And then serious enough that I started getting up at 5 in the morning during the summer so that I could run before it got to hot. So I started drinking coffee on days that I got up super early, but back then I only ran 3-4 times a week so it wasn’t really a big deal.

Almost 2 years ago now, we moved into our house and I started running more. That meant more early mornings and more coffee. Eventually that slowly lead to me drinking coffee every morning and now here we are.

Honestly I don’t even think it’s that big of a deal. I mean, I only drink 1 cup of (strong) coffee every morning. And occasionally after a long run on a cold day I’ll have another cup. So it’s not like I’m drinking obscene amounts of caffeine or anything, but on Monday I decided to cut back on my coffee intake a little bit, and that’s pretty much when I realized that I’m addicted to caffeine again haha. Actually, on Monday I just skipped my morning coffee all together and I kinda felt like shit all day but I didn’t really think much of it. On Tuesday I forgot my resolve to cut back on the coffee and had a cup in the morning and I felt perfectly fine that day. Then today I remembered, didn’t have any, and have been ridiculously tired and grouchy all day and I couldn’t figure out why.

Until it clicked that the two days I skipped out on my morning coffee are the day’s I’ve felt like crap and that there is a very good chance that I was having caffeine withdraws. So at like 2:30 pm I made a cup of coffee and I’ve felt perfectly fine ever since. So yeah, I’m definitely addicted to caffeine again.

I’m not that worried about it though. I mean, there are a lot worse things out there that a person can be addicted to, I don’t drink soda or energy drinks anymore, and I it’s not like I consume so much coffee that it’s going to have adverse effects to my heath. I guess it’s just a little bit inconvenient haha. But I’ve decided I’m not quite ready to give up on the caffeine yet. Especially with summer and 5 am wake up calls right around the corner. But maybe I’ll start cutting back just a little bit. I’m definitely not going to try to go cold turkey with it, because that was just awful!

Anyway, that was really random. I hope your Wednesday has been better than mine! Haha I have a feeling tomorrow is going to be a lot better though, because I’m definitely not skipping out on my coffee!

Race Week Is Here!!

Note to self; Drinking a shit ton of coffee without eating breakfast or drinking water and then trying to run is a terrible idea.

Seriously, I couldn’t find my easy pace, I just wanted to go go go. Then I started getting a little dizzy and shaky, which tends to happen when I consume too much caffeine without eating anything. Oh well, you live and you learn. Even if it does take a few times of you making the same mistakes before you actually learn from them haha. 😉

Anyway, I was supposed to do 30 easy minutes of running today, but I stopped at 20 when I started getting dizzy. I’m not worried about it though, a little extra rest on race week never hurts. I mean, I’m already going crazy with the lack of running and amount of rest days on my scheduled this week. I know it’s all part of the training plan and on race day it’s going to be totally worth it, but holy shit I just want to run!! Like, a nice interval workout or a hard hill session would be so awesome right now (well, after a nice big breakfast, that is). But I guess the fact that I’m so revved up and ready to go is a good thing. Now I just have to wait (very impatiently I might add) 5 more days before I can let all of my pent up energy out.

img_9658

So good news! According to weather bug, the temperature for Saturday has been dropping and now the high is only 56 degrees! So it should probably be in the high 30’s and mid 40’s while I’m running. Freaking sweet!! As it is going to be a little more cold I’ve decided to add a long sleeved t-shirt to my race day attire. This presents me with a whole new dilemma though; Do I put my bib on the long sleeved shirt, or on my tank top? Because I’m most likely going to get hot and take the t-shirt off, but I definitely need my bib to be visible at the start and finish of the race. Hmmm I don’t know, I guess I’ll figure that all out later when I have a better idea of what the weather will be like. For all I know, I may be able to finish without having to take off the long sleeved t-shirt.

img_9655

Oh man, I could go on and on about all the things I’ve got going on in my head right now, but I really do need to go make breakfast, so I won’t bore you with all of that right now. 😉

Happy Monday!

Friday Fives: 5 Things I’m Currently Super Into

1. Pokemon Go

I’m super obsessed with this app. I mean, it’s basically made all of my childhood dreams come true. I get to venture out into the world on my very own Pokemon adventure. Collecting them and battling gyms as I go. It’s pretty awesome!

img_7587

2. Coffee

Once upon a time, I was addicted to caffeine (that was waaay back when I was in high school). I got my caffeine fix from sodas and energy drinks and gross stuff like that. But I broke that habit in 2012.

I think I’m hooked on it again though. With all this waking up early that running requires I’ve been heavily relying on coffee to get me going. Add some soy milk and honey. Perfect! 🙂

Haha at least coffee is better than soda.

3. Death of a Bachelor

I am absolutely in love with every song on this album! I’ve always liked Panic! At the Disco, but I’ve never been this super into them until now.

5. Avatar: The Legened of Korra

I’m just now getting around to watching this. I LOVED the first Avatar series so I figured I needed to watch this one too. So far, this one is a lot more heart wrenching than the first one, and I love it!
