Weekly a Recap: August 27th – September 2nd, 2018

I definitely got over the “bleh” feeling I was experiencing last week! So that’s good!! Spent most of this week just chugging along and getting my runs done. Or at least most of them. I skipped the one I had planned for Sunday, but I felt like that was necessary.Β  But we’ll get to that in a minute. πŸ˜‰

Monday:

  • 4 easy miles
  • 15 minutes of strength work

Started off the week with 4 sunny, hot, and humid miles. Hot and humid has pretty much been the theme of this week. It hasn’t exactly been fun, but like I said, I’m still chugging along. Just a little more slowly than I’d like. Haha well, at lot more slowly, but hey, the heat does that to me and I’m well aware of that. I can’t wait for the cold weather just so I can start speeding up a little bit haha.

img_4426

Tuesday:Β

  • 3 miles, intervals
  • 15 minutes of foam rolling

I slept in and then procrastinated my run on Tuesday. I did get it done though! Ended up doing my interval workout on the treadmill. Honestly I’m kind of glad I procrastinated doing this run. I feel like it went a lot better than it would have if I ran first thing in the morning like I often do. Aside from doing it on the treadmill I felt pretty good doing this workout! πŸ™‚

img_4457

Wednesday:Β

  • 5 miles

Got some cloud cover on Wednesday!! That was pretty nice! Still hot and humid though…

Anyway, I like running in my town’s cemetery. It’s nice, quite, usually no traffic or other people. It’s very peaceful. The only problem is small town = small cemetery. Following the road all the way around is only about .3 of a mile. Still find myself running there all the time though.

img_4479

Thursday:

  • rest day

The plan on Thursday was a cross training day. Stationary bike, strength work, all of that. But somehow I managed to hurt my back in my sleep on Wednesday night? Like seriously, I somehow fucked it up so bad that just moving hurt in. Haha I guess I must be getting old. I never understood the whole hurt back thing before, but oh boy do I get it now! πŸ˜‰ Anyway, since I somehow hurt it I decided to let it rest on Thursday.

img_4483

Friday:

  • rest day

My back was still a little achy on Friday. Not as bad as Thursday though. But Friday was a scheduled rest day anyway, so that kinda worked out for me. πŸ™‚

Anyway, on Friday Luke and I had planned to do some errands, grocery shopping, and whatnot. Our usual every-other-Friday routine. Our plans got a little thrown off while we were getting into the truck and getting ready to go. As we were pulling out of the driveway two dogs ran into our yard. A black lab and some kind of lab mix. So we got out and managed to grab on of the dogs, but the other took off down the street. Luke went after him while I held on to the other dog but every time Luke got close to the other dog he took off running. So I put the other dog inside in our spare bedroom and we got into the truck and went after the other dog. We couldn’t get close to him though. We gave up on him after 10 minutes or so. The dog we caught had a collar but no tags. The other dog had tags, but I wasn’t exactly convinced that they came from the same place. I think they just kinda found each other while they were both out running.

Anyway, after we gave up on catching the second dog we drove around our neighborhood looking for anyone who looked like they were out looking for a dog, but we didn’t find anyone. So we went back home and I convinced Luke to surrender the dog to animal control (which is legit just the k9 unit in our town haha. The police force in deals with stray dogs.).Β  Luke felt bad sending the poor guy to some kennel, but I told him at least he’d be safe there and all his owner would have to do was call animal control and they’d be able to get him back. So that’s what we did. Called animal control and a cop came to our house to pick him up and bring him to the kennel. I sure hope the poor guy got picked up by his owner later that day. But at the very least Luke and I got him somewhere safe where he wouldn’t get hit by a car or attacked by another dog or something.

After he was taken care of we finally set off to get our errands done. πŸ™‚

img_4505

Poor guy was older, exhausted, and stressed out. He was very friendly and cooperative though. I hope he made it back home!Β

Saturday:

  • 11 miles

Woke up at 5 am, got out on the road while it was still dark out, but it was still really hot out…I even saw some heat lighting. It was in the mid 70’s, 92% humidity, and just gross in general out. Not fun at all. But still better than last weeks long run! Haha last week I didn’t fuel or hydrate properly and that ended up being my downfall. So I made absolutely sure to do just that this week and obviously that ended up working! The plan was 11 miles and mission accomplished! But I did the first 9 miles outside, but the humidity was abolutely killing me, so I finished the last 2 miles on the treadmill. But I got it done and that’s all that matters!

Spent the rest of the day trying to recover from those 11 miles. Haha like I said, that humidity was killer! I felt absolutely drained afterwards.

img_4529

Sunday:

  • rest day

Alrighty! Finally made it to Sunday!

So the plan on Sunday was 5 miles. Trying to do a few back to back long/medium long (because at this point 5 miles is basically a medium long run for me) because of the whole two half marathons in two days thing. But I woke up feeling super duper dehydrated and very drained. Physically and mentally. I thought I had done enough hydrating yesterday, but obviously not. Oh man and that heat and humidity yesterday! It gets me every time…

So while I would have really liked to have done my back to back runs, I just didn’t think it would have been a good idea for me this week. Not while I’m feeling like this. But I am happy with getting my long run done this week! So at least there’s that! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

img_4536-1

Total Weekly Mileage: 23 miles

Not too bad!! Would have liked to get to the 28 miles that I had planned on, but still happy with how the week went. I’m very much looking forward to cooler weather though. I always feel so much better during the cooler months. But summer running is making me stronger and more tough. Or at least I sure hope it is! πŸ˜‰

Anyway, wishing everyone a safe and happy Labor Day tomorrow!

Happy First Day Of Spring!!

Hahaha flowers like that don’t bloom this time of year here in the Midwest. I just really like this photo (I took it during our family vacation in Florida last July). There are a bunch of daffodils popping up around my neighborhood though, and some of them have started to bloom!

Anyway, we are starting to get some spring-like weather in my part of Kansas. The air is starting to warm up and it rained pretty much all day yesterday. That’s typical spring time weather. We really needed it though. Things were really dry here. Haha and I was pretty excited about that because I love rainy days and think that running in the rain is a lot of fun! πŸ™‚ And yesterday’s 3 miler did not disappoint! I got soaked pretty fast. I also got frostnip on my legs because it was in the low 40’s when I ran. I probably should have put on my wind pants over my running tights. They’re usually pretty good at keeping me relatively dry. But oh well, it really wasn’t that bad and the redness, itchiness, and irritation that came with that was all gone by this morning. That was still totally worth all the fun I had in the rain yesterday.

img_0458-1

This morning’s run was nowhere near as fun though. I actually procrastinated doing it by making myself an actual decent breakfast. Who does that?!? Me apparently…

Usually in the morning I can’t be bothered to make anything exciting for breakfast. Sometimes I throw a few frozen, whole wheat waffles in the toaster and then slather them with peanut butter and honey. Other days I’ll just grab a piece of fruit and a cheese stick. Or on really lazy day’s I’ll just eat a Honey Stinger waffle along with my coffee. But I knew running wasn’t going to be very exciting today, so I took a little bit of extra time with my breakfast. I toasted some bread, spread some avocado on it, topped that with sliced, cherry tomatoes, and then fried an egg to go on that as well. Hahaha I know that doesn’t sound too difficult, but in the morning I never feel like putting that much effort into what I’m eating. πŸ˜‰

img_0467-1

I did eventually go out and get my run done, though. My 5k training plan called for 2 easy miles followed by a couple of strides, but those 2 miles sure didn’t feel easy… It actually seems to me that most of the “easy” runs I do don’t actually feel easy. They tend to feel more like I’m running through cold molasses. Oh well, I still did it though! Well, the 2 miles. I kinda sorta skipped the strides. I just wasn’t feeling it enough to do those.

img_0469

But on the bright side, running seems to be going a lot better this week than it did last week! I know it’s only Tuesday, but I’m thinking the rest of the week is going to go pretty well. But maybe I’m only saying that because tomorrow is a rest day and then for Thursday my training plan calls for 30 minutes of cross training, so I wont actually have to run again until Friday. πŸ˜‰ But still, I’m a lot happier about running this week than I was last week, so at least that’s something. πŸ™‚

But anyway, now that spring is here I really need to start thinking about what I want to plant in my garden and I’m going to have to start tilling and preparing my soil here before too long. So far I know I’m definitely going to be growing my staples; tomatoes, banana peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, lettuce, and watermelon. I actually want to grow my vine plants on some kind of structure this year to help make weeding and harvesting a little bit easier. I’ve got a few ideas for that and Luke and I will be starting work on those soon. I also really wish I could get root vegetables to grow a little easier here, but they never do well because the soil here is so full of clay. A lot needs to be done to remedy that…Or you can do raised beds filled with good quality soil but those are kind of expensive to make. Maybe one day though. But for now we’re planning on sticking with plants that we know do well here.

img_6329.jpg

A small harvest from last summer. That watermelon was sooooo good!! Haha I’m on a mission to grow several really good watermelons this year! It seems like each year I’ve grown them I’ve gotten bigger, better melons. And usually a few more than the year before. So I guess I must be learning something! And hopefully if that trend keeps up, I should end up with 5 or 6 really good watermelons this year! πŸ™‚

Now with the addition of our 5 chickens, we should end up getting a pretty decent amount of food from our backyard this year! I’m so freaking excited about having fresh eggs! I can’t wait for my chickens to start laying!! They’ve still got a while to go before they get to that point though. They are doing very well and growing bigger and getting more feathers every day! And as it starts getting even warmer they’re going to be able to spend a little bit more time outside. So far they’ve only been out twice for about 10-15 minutes at a time, just to make sure they didn’t get too cold. But in maybe two or three weeks, as long as it’s warm enough, we’ll be able to move them outside permanently. Haha I have a feeling we wont get that lucky though, it’s probably still going to be pretty chilly in April. If they were fully grown the cold wouldn’t be much of an issue, but when they’re young it’s very important that they’re kept warm.

Oh man, between my garden, the chickens, training for my 5k in May, training for my half marathon in November, the dogs, rabbits, and all of my other critters, plus another vacation we’re going to be going on with Luke’s family, I’m going to be crazy busy this spring and summer! It should be fun though! And besides, I’d much rather be busy than bored. πŸ˜‰

That’s all I’ve got for today! But what about you?

What are you looking forward to this spring? Any exciting plans?

Do you grow a garden? What’s you’re favorite thing to grow?

Does your city allow you to keep chickens? Would you if you could?Β (Technically my city doesn’t allow you to do it without a permit, but when have I ever let rules stop me?!? Luckily my neighbors are cool with it though, so it should be fine. πŸ˜‰ )

Β I hope you’ve had a terrific Tuesday!

~Ashley

Thursday Things

Hello, people of earth and any potential space aliens reading this! Haha hey, you never know! πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰

img_9008

First and foremost, can we talk about how freaking true the above photo is? Especially when you decide to chug two Not Your Father’s Root Beer Beer’s on a Wednesday night. I know that’s not a lot, but I don’t exactly drink often and chugging them in a short amount of time may or may not have gotten me a little bit tipsy and I woke up a little more tired than I probably should have and very thirsty. Oh well, that was an easy enough fix. πŸ™‚

Anyways, yesterday was Dean’s birthday!!!!!! My favorite running buddy turned 3 years old yesterday! We didn’t make him a cake like we did for Finn, but he did get a pretty good amount of raw, ground beef all to himself. So I think that more than makes up for it.

img_9018

I say he’s my favorite running buddy, but I actually haven’t run with him for a while haha. I need to though. He really enjoys running with me. I’ll have to do that after all of the salt washes off of the roads. I don’t like walking my dogs on all of that stuff. It’s got chemicals in it that I don’t want them getting on their feet.

And speaking of running (my segues on these “Thursday Things” posts are so freakin good, I know. πŸ˜‰ ), I didn’t do any one Tuesday or yesterday haha. After running on snow and ice on MondayΒ my legs were completely trashed and my left knee was a little bit sore. I suppose that’s not too surprising though. Running on snow is hard! So I took a rest day on Tuesday and spent a little bit of time on my stationary bike on Wednesday. Haha and actually, part of the reason why I didn’t run yesterday was because it felt like -12 degrees outside and I didn’t feel like dealing with that kind of cold. It just didn’t sound like fun.

It’s looking like we’re not gonna have to worry about the crazy cold for much longer though! I mean, look at Sunday. That’s basically shorts weather at this point!!

img_9073

It was still pretty chilly this morning though. It felt like 7Β  degrees when I woke up, which not gonna lie, felt a little bit toasty after -12 the day before hahaha. But since it was a tad bit warmer out and my legs felt a lot better, I figured I’d better do some running today. So I went out and did 20 easy minutes. I still had a bit of a niggle going on in my knee, so I figured short and sweet was a good idea for today. Plus there were still some icy patches on the road and that’s what more likely than not made my knee sore in the first place haha.

img_9080-2

So, Death Of A Bachelor kept me entertained during my warm up and run this morning, but I need some new albums to listen to while I run. Suggestions?? Please! I’m getting really bored with most of my music lately haha. I need some new tunes!

img_9079

Alrighty then! This is kinda super random, but aren’t all of my “Thursday Things” posts? Anyway, so a couple of months ago I saw an ad for this app called Achievement on Facebook. The ad basically claimed that you could earn a little bit of extra cash by being active. Of course I initially thought it was bullshit, but I did a little bit of research, downloaded the app, and discovered that it’s actually legit! Or at least it seems that way so far. So basically, you earn points by syncing apps like myfitnesspal, Strava, Garmin Connect, the FitBit app, Apple health and other apps like that, and basically just using them haha. It seems like you earn the most points by just logging steps but you still get a few by logging your meals, activities and what not. Then once you earn 10,000 they supposedly send you $10, either through PayPal or direct depostit. I haven’t gotten that far yet (I’m getting close though!) but I’ll let you know if I actually get $10!

img_9072

So obviously it’s not a lot of money, but hey, it’s something! And basically all you have to do is use health/fitness apps that you already use! And I’m not getting any kind of compensation or rewards, or anything like that for talking about this app. I just thought it was pretty spiffy and wanted to share it with you guys! πŸ™‚ If you’re at all interested, here’s Achievement’s website!

Anyway, I believe that’s all I’ve got to talk about for today! Haha now that the holiday’s are over it feels like I’ve just got nothing going on and very little to talk about at the moment. Especially since I’m just slowly working back into running and whatnot, so nothing very exciting is really happening right now. But I do have one race on the schedule in May and a few others that I want to do this year, along with all of my other running goals/plans. So hopefully before too long things will start picking up again! Haha but I just feel like I’m being kinda boring at the moment. Oh well, can’t do much about that except keeping up with what I’m doing. Which like I said, isn’t much, especially running-wise, but I do feel like I’m making some progress on that front. Slow progress. But progress nonetheless!

Happy Friday eve everyone! I hope everyone’s had a great week so far!!

~Ashley

img_9071

Oh yeah, and I’m bringing back the blonde hair streak thingy!! I don’t remember if I mentioned that on here yet haha. I’m kinda over the whole black hair thing, so I’m just letting that fade and working on bringing the blonde thing back. Right now it’s kinda orange, but hopefully it’ll only take one more round of bleaching to turn all the way blonde again. Like everything I’ve got going on right now, it’s a slow process.

Ok, now I’m done. πŸ˜‰

January 16th, 2018

Winter is going above and beyond the typical cold weather here in Kansas. We’ve spent a lot of time dealing with negative temperatures. Now, I’m definitely a fan of cold weather, but things definitely stop being fun once the temperatures start getting into the negatives.

We did get some snow on Sunday/Monday. Now snow makes everything more fun. πŸ˜‰ Hahaha I know a lot of people don’t necessarily agree with me on that one, but I love it!!

Since snow makes everything more fun, obviously I had to go for a run on Monday. As you can see in the photo above, the roads weren’t plowed (and actually for the most part they still aren’t! At least around my town they aren’t.) and it was really pretty outside! It was, however, -9 degrees. That coupled with the wind was not so fun. So I went out with the plan to figure out how far I could go before I wanted to die. Turns out, the answer to that question was 4.35 miles. But with all that snow on the roads it felt a lot farther than that haha. Aaaand of course this run was fueled by Honey Stinger! But let me tell ya, when those waffles get cold, they are incredibly hard to eat! πŸ˜‚

So in summery, Monday’s run included snow, -9 degree temperatures, wind, unplowed roads, Honey Stinger, and was incredibly fun!!! 😁😁😁 But I was pretty much down for the count afterwards. Running in snow is freaking hard!! So I took a super hot shower, attempted to nap (it really just turned into me laying in bed for half an hour), and later in the afternoon my next door neighbor who was apparently off from school yesterday wanted to come over to play with the ferrets, so I downed a second cup of coffee and she came over and hung out for a while. Oh and did I mention that she’s only 4? Haha she’s a lot of fun though. We usually play with the ferrets, watch cartoons, and play with the Barbies she brings over.

And that was pretty much my whole day, yesterday. 😁

Today is going to be nowhere near as exciting though. I’m actually probably going to be stuck inside all day, because it currently feels like -20 outside…

img_8999.jpg

Yeah, that’s too much even for me haha. Luke had to call off work because we our car’s heat doesn’t work, and he didn’t want to drive half an hour in -20 degrees with no heat. I don’t blame him. That would definitely not be a fun drive.

Apparently the crazy cold won’t be sticking around for much longer though. The high for Friday is 44 degrees, the high for Saturday is 50, and then after that it’s supposed to stay in the mid to high 40’s. For a few more days. Weather is weird here in the Midwest.

But for now it’s looking like Luke, the dogs, and I are going to be holed up inside for at least today.

Happy Tuesday!

Friday Fives: Stocking Stuffers For The Runner In Your Life

It’s that time of year again! Stressing over making sure you have a little something to give to your friends, family, coworkers, etc. It can be tough! But worry not my friends, you’re friendly neighborhood runner is here to give you some stocking stuffer ideas for the runner in your life. πŸ™‚

1. Their Favorite On The Run FuelΒ

I’m always up for trying new things, so personally I don’t mind getting something that’s not my favorite or that I’ve never tried before, but if your runner is a little bit more picky you might have to ask if you don’t already know. But some really popular brands are GU, Jelly Belly Sport’s Beans, and Honey Stinger.

Anyway, I know I never mind getting on the run fuel! It’s something that I could always use, and it’s relatively inexpensive to buy one or two gels, or waffles, or whatever, and you can usually find them at any local sporting good’s store.

img_1905

Honey Stinger waffles are my personal favorite. πŸ™‚

2. GlovesΒ

If there’s one piece of running gear that I could consistently use more of, it would probably be cheap, throwaway gloves. Now, there are some fancier gloves out there; touch screen gloves, wind resistant gloves, moisture wicking gloves, etc. And those are all super neat! But honestly I’d rather receive a pair of gloves I could ditch at the starting line of a Turkey Trot, Santa Shuffle, or a Hangover Half Marathon (don’t let me lie to you, the only holiday themed running event I’ve ever done was a “run with Santa 5k” in my town haha. But I’d like to participate in others eventually. πŸ˜‰ ). Also, I have a bad habit of blowing my nose into my hand (and I know I’m not the only runner who does this!!) and I don’t think I’d want to do that into a pair of $40 gloves haha.

img_7569-2

3. Custom Race Bib OrnamentΒ

Did your runner crush a new PR, finish a big goal race, or just has a race bib that they particularly like? I think these race bib ornaments are super neat and a great way to remember a big race!! Also, shout out to my family and friends who might be reading this, looking for gift ideas for me. I think these are super duper neat and I don’t have one hahahaha. πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰

tr-biborn-bs-4

Goneforarun.com actually has a bunch of cool custom race bib stuff, I just think the ornaments are particularly neat. πŸ™‚

4. Runner Nation Coffee Mug

Fact; runners love coffee. Also fact; I’m not entirely sure how true that first “fact” is hahaha. πŸ˜‰ But for real though, in my experience, a lot of runners do enjoy a nice cup of coffee. Especially on a day when they have to wake up particularly early or before a long run when a little bit of caffeine is definitely appreciated. And here’s another “fact” for ya, coffee tastes better when it’s in a neat mug. πŸ˜‰

5. A StrideBox Gift Subscription

Now a-days there’s a subscription box for everyone and everything, right? Well running is no exception!! StrideBox is a subscription box that comes full of lots of fun goodies for before, during, and after a run!!

So I’m not gonna lie, I was always a bit hesitant about subscription boxes because I was worried that after a few months the products that come in the box would get kinda lame after a while, but that hasn’t been my experience with StrideBox! It always comes full of all sorts of neat stuff to try! And good news!! If you use the codeΒ RunningRebel10, which isΒ good until 12/24/17, you can get 10% off of a 3 or 6 month gift subscription for the runner in your life! Or for yourself, because you deserve a gift too, and I swear the day StrideBox comes in the mail is basically like Christmas morning. πŸ˜‰

Processed with Rookie Cam

Again, you can use the code RunningRebel10 to get 10% off of a 3 or 6 month gift subscription!! πŸ™‚ Good until 12/14/17.

So there you have it! Some nifty gift ideas for the runner in your life! Or at least I think they are. Fellow runners, what are some gift ideas that you’d like to receive or give during this holiday season? πŸ™‚

July 12th, 2017

I’m trying to get back into my usual summer routine, but that’s kinda hard to do after vacation. Especially since I wasn’t exactly into my summer routine before we left haha. Oh  well, It was a little rough getting up at 5 am and then getting stuff done, but I managed. πŸ™‚

So I began my morning with a run, of course! It was a super short, super slow 2 miles, but still better than nothing. πŸ˜‰ I kinda wanted to go farther than that, but we’re still under a heat adviory here in Kansas, so I needed to get all three dogs walked before it started to get too hot outside. But this was the first time I’ve run since July 3rd, so I’m just happy that I did something. Even if it was short and slow.

img_4642

After my run I got to work walking the dogs. I would probably save myself a lot of time and effort if I would walk at least 2 of them at the same time (there’s absolute no way I’d be able to walk all 3 at the same time haha), but I prefer to walk them by themselves because it gives me a chance to spend a little one on one time with each of them and that’s definitely good for them. Plus whenever I try walking 2 of them at a time, no matter what combination, they gang up on me and end up dragging me down the street haha. That usually doesn’t happen whenever I take them one at a time. So I walked Lily, then Finn, and last but not least Dean. So they all got out and got a little bit of exercise before it got too hot and I think they’re all happy about that. I don’t think they got walked at all while Luke and I were in Florida and that tends to make them go a little crazy.

img_4651

Dean and Finn were very happy to see Lily and I after we got done with our walk (probably because they knew it would be their turn soon).

After the dogs were taken care of I got to work on the garden. I had done some weeding yesterday, but I’ve still got sooo much to do…Luckily I got my weed eater working today so that made my life a little bit easier. πŸ™‚ But first I had to water everything. Luckily my plants are all starting to perk up a little bit after I watered them yesterday and this morning, so I’m thinking the plants that are left are going to be just fine. πŸ™‚ After that I did a bit of hoeing, weed pulling, and then I basically mowed around my tomato plants with the weed eater. I didn’t quite finish weed eating the whole garden plot though. I guess the battery that’s on the weed eater isn’t the best, so it dies pretty quickly. I had time to let it charge a little and then continue on once, but after that it was just starting to get too hot for me to stay outside much longer, so after it died a second time I decided to call it a day. I still feel like I got a pretty decent amount of work done and hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to get even more accomplished. πŸ™‚

img_4656

My tomato plants (left) are huge and looking good! My banana pepper plants (right) are super small, but they’re growing decent sized peppers so I guess it’s all good. πŸ™‚

img_4659

Finn is terrified of the weed eater, but every time I turned it off he had to come make sure I was alright haha.

So yeah, I got a run done, the dogs walked, and the garden tended to. I’ve showered, cleaned both of my new tattoos (which are itchy, but healing nicely), eaten breakfast twice (before and after my run/gardening adventures πŸ˜‰ ), and wrote this blog post. Now I need to clean the rabbit cage, probably record a vlog since it’s been a while since I’ve done that, and then after that I’m thinking a nap is going to be necessary! But so far I’m having a very productive day and I’m very happy about that!

The itching/peeling phase is seriously the worst part about getting a new tattoo.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

My Name Is Ashley And I’m Addicted To Caffeine

Processed with Rookie Cam

No seriously, it’s bad…

Back in high school I used to have a hardcore soda problem. During my freshman and sophomore years, on normal day, I’d drink one to two, or sometimes 3 bottles of soda a day. Wild cherry Pepsi was my drink of choice. Ugh just thinking about that shit now kinda makes me want to puke haha, but I guess we all make bad decisions sometimes. Especially as teenagers/young adults, because it only got worse from their.

Around my junior and senior year of high school energy drinks started getting really popular. Before school my friends and I would stop at quick trip to get 32 ounce cups full of “Rooster Booster”, it wasn’t unusual to see someone with a can Red Bull or Full Throttle (my personal favorite) at lunch, and of course all of these energy drinks would get mixed with alcohol over the weekends (dangerous and stupid, but like I said, we all make bad decisions).Β And so the addiction to caffeine began.

Obviously I didn’t really care too much about my health back then, and it’s no wonder I ended up almost hitting 180 pounds after high school. But after I graduated and started working at a Walgreen’s I started becoming a little more health conscious. At one point we had a mini weight watchers challenge that we could buy into, and whoever lost the biggest percentage of weight got the pot. I guess my participation in that is actually what got me started on my whole “weight loss journey” which eventually got me into running, but that’s a story for another day. Because I was participating in that weight loss challenge I looked for any places I could cut out extra calories and soda was the first thing to go. I couldn’t give up the energy drinks though, I’m was very much addicted to caffiene at this point, so I switched to those huge cans of Monster that we’re low carb and would drink 2 of them a day.

Eventually I ended up getting married and moving to an apartment Kansas and that’s when IΒ reallyΒ started to look at what I was putting into my body. I knew those energy drinks we’re pretty bad for me, even if they were low in calories. I wasn’t a fan of coffee back then though, so I decided to kick caffeine for good. After being kinda tired and grumpy for a few days, and along with drinking a lot of low caffeine/caffeine free tea, I officially kicked my caffeine habit.

And then I started getting really serious about running. Serious enough that I quite using the treadmill at the apartment complexes fitness center and started running on the trail that literally went right behind the apartments. And then serious enough that I started getting up at 5 in the morning during the summer so that I could run before it got to hot. So I started drinking coffee on days that I got up super early, but back then I only ran 3-4 times a week so it wasn’t really a big deal.

Almost 2 years ago now, we moved into our house and I started running more. That meant more early mornings and more coffee. Eventually that slowly lead to me drinking coffee every morning and now here we are.

Honestly I don’t even think it’s that big of a deal. I mean, I only drink 1 cup of (strong) coffee every morning. And occasionally after a long run on a cold day I’ll have another cup. So it’s not like I’m drinking obscene amounts of caffeine or anything, but on Monday I decided to cut back on my coffee intake a little bit, and that’s pretty much when I realized that I’m addicted to caffeine again haha. Actually, on Monday I just skipped my morning coffee all together and I kinda felt like shit all day but I didn’t really think much of it. On Tuesday I forgot my resolve to cut back on the coffee and had a cup in the morning and I felt perfectly fine that day. Then today I remembered, didn’t have any, and have been ridiculously tired and grouchy all day and I couldn’t figure out why.

Until it clicked that the two days I skipped out on my morning coffee are the day’s I’ve felt like crap and that there is a very good chance that I was having caffeine withdraws. So at like 2:30 pm I made a cup of coffee and I’ve felt perfectly fine ever since. So yeah, I’m definitely addicted to caffeine again.

I’m not that worried about it though. I mean, there are a lot worse things out there that a person can be addicted to, I don’t drink soda or energy drinks anymore, and I it’s not like I consume so much coffee that it’s going to have adverse effects to my heath. I guess it’s just a little bit inconvenient haha. But I’ve decided I’m not quite ready to give up on the caffeine yet. Especially with summer and 5 am wake up calls right around the corner. But maybe I’ll start cutting back just a little bit. I’m definitely not going to try to go cold turkey with it, because that was just awful!

Anyway, that was really random. I hope your Wednesday has been better than mine! Haha I have a feeling tomorrow is going to be a lot better though, because I’m definitely not skipping out on my coffee!
