Happy Summer Solstice!!

I guess technically it started yesterday, and depending on who you ask, either yesterday or today is the officially first day of summer! But when the first day of summer is really doesn’t matter to me. What does matter, however, is that yesterday and today were the longest day’s of the year! Which basically just means that on those two days we get the most hours of daylight compared to another day of the year. And after that, we get a just a little bit less daylight everyday!

Grant it, that doesn’t mean it’s going to start cooling off outside. Here in the Midwest we still haven’t made it to the hottest days of the year. Those don’t usually come until July and August. But a just a tiny bit less daylight everyday just makes that just a little more bearable, if you ask me. Plus now we’re just that much closer to Fall!! Haha can you tell I’m very much ready for summer to be over? πŸ˜‰

Anyway, almost every single day of this month, I’ve regretted participating in challengeville’s Tinman challenge. I’m running more than I’ve ever run in the summer and I hate it haha. But at the same time I’m really glad that I’m doing it! I’ve run more than I’ve ever run in the summer (I know I already said that, but it needed said again πŸ˜‰ ) and it’s really keeping me motivated to push through the discomfort of being hot and sweaty and tired. It’s also taught me that I’m capable of a lot more than I thought I was, and that’s a great lesson to learn! I’m just kinda learning it the hard way haha.

So I’ve kinda stopped following the daily running guide that accompanies this challenge. It wasn’t exactly working for me, so I started kinda doing my own thing and that’s been working a lot better for me. πŸ™‚

This morning I did 6 miles. Not gonna lie, I had set out to do 7 (which was a mile more than any of the runs on the daily running guide). But I was hot, sweaty/salty, tired, and very close to home by mile 6, so that’s where I stopped. I’m not too upset about that though, 6 miles is still no joke! Especially when it’s 71 degrees and 82% humidity outside…

Now that my run is done and I’m showered and have eaten a snack, I need to stretch, water the garden, take care of the rabbits, walk the dogs, clean the house, and once all that is done maybe take a nice little nap? Haha sounds like a good plan to me anyway!

I hope you have a happy hump and a great first (or second) day of summer! πŸ™‚

Weekly Recap: June 12th-18th, 2017

I’ve kinda had a little mantra that I’ve been reciting to myself all week and it goes like this; a tight athlete is an inefficient athlete. Because, well, I’ve just been tight all over. Mostly in my calves and hamstrings, but also in my quads, shoulders, arms, and even my neck. That’s no bueno and it’s probably altering my running form enough to make me less efficient. Hence my mantra!

Along with the tightness and most likely altered running form, whenever my quads and calves get tight my shins start to ache, and nothing good ever comes from achy shins. So I’ve been reciting my mantra over and over again to remind me that I need to stretch. A lot. And so I have been! πŸ™‚

I found this nifty video on YouTube for shin splints and I’ve been incorporating it into almost every yoga session I’ve done each day. Now it hasn’t completely solved my problem, but it’s definitely made a very big improvement!

Now if only I was this dedicated to strength training! Then I’d be all set haha!

Monday:Β

  • 6 miles
  • 10 minutes of stretching/foam rolling

This week I kinda veered off of the daily running plan that goes along with the Tinman challenge and decided to work down my weekly mileage instead of working it up. So I started out the week with a “long” run, insead of the 5k that the plan calls for, and I gotta say, that ended up working out a lot better for me!!

Processed with Rookie Cam

Tuesday:

  • 5 miles in the morning
  • 30 minutes of yoga
  • 2 miles in the evening

All of that tiredness and heaviness that I felt in my legs last week was pretty much gone by this point! I had a lot of fun on my 5 miler on Tuesday and I felt so good that evening that I decided I needed to do a few more easy miles. That was the first time I’ve doubled in quite a long time! It was totally worth it!!

Wednesday:Β

  • 1.78 miles, got caught in a thunderstorm and had to run home and wait it out for a while, then did 2 more miles
  • 10 minutes of yoga

Haha yeah, things got a little crazy on Wednesday. I talk all about what went down that day here, if you want to know all of the details, but basically, my run got interrupted by a severe thunderstorm…

Thursday:

  • rest day

After Wednesday’s escapades I decided that I could use a day off from running. And not gonna lie, I didn’t want to wake up at 5 am again and used this rest day as an opportunity to sleep in a little bit. It was glorious! And I mean, I felt pretty shitty during part 2 of my run on Wednesday, so I figured a rest day was in order. πŸ™‚

Friday:

  • 5 miles
  • 20 minutes of hoeing in the garden
  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike

This run ended up being a lot of fun!! We got more thunderstorms last night so they cooled everything off a little bit. I was worried that the humidity would be terrible, but it was only at 77% this morning. Not bad!! πŸ™‚

Saturday:

  • 2 miles

We got another really bad thunderstorm the night before, so it was crazy humid and muggy and miserable outside on Saturday. I had planned on doing 3 miles, but I stopped at 2 because I was basically dying haha. On the bright side, I had a lot of fun dodging and hurdling all of the leaves and tree branches that had been knocked down by the storm. πŸ˜‰

Sunday:

  • Active Rest Day

Yay no running for me today! Haha I actually feel pretty darn good today, but we had ANOTHER thunderstorm last night, so yet again it’s humid and gross outside. But Luke and I are going to the dog park a little bit later today, and I’m going to work on some stretching as well. πŸ™‚

Also, happy Father’s Day to all the dad’s out there! You probably are and or have a super cool dad, but my dad is definitely the coolest!! πŸ˜‰

Me, my dad, and my baby brother. πŸ™‚

Total Weekly Mileage: 24 miles

Went over my weekly goal by a whole mile! Go me!! πŸ˜‰

Total Monthly Mileage: 48.62

So, I’m definitely hanging in there on this challenge! I’m a little bit behind, but I’m not too worried about it. Even if I don’t hit the total monthly mileage goal for this challenge I’m still going to be super proud of myself! So far I’ve hung in there when things have gotten tough, I’ve hardcore upped my mileage which I’ve been trying to do for a while now (and in the summer too! I never accomplish much in the summer, running wise), ran more miles than I ran in the entire month of May, and I’ve definitely learned that I’m capable of much more than I thought! I think all of that is much more important that hitting some arbitrary number of miles anyway. πŸ™‚

I hope you’ve had a great week!

Weekly Recap: June 5th-11th, 2017

The week was the first full week of the challengevilleΒ challenge that I’m doing this month. Not gonna lie, it’s been really rough. Between the increase in mileage and the rising temps and crazy humidity, I’ve had my ass handed to me many different times this week. At this point I’m just barely hanging in there, and I’ve fallen a little bit behind on my challenge.

So this is what the daily run guide looks like for this particular challenge;

img_3755

I started out following this guide perfectly, but by Friday all of my momentum from earlier in the week came crashing down around me and I really really started to struggle and ended up finishing this week on a really weak note. Oh well, there’s always next week I suppose.

But anyway, here’s what this weeks workouts looked like;

Monday:

  • 5k
  • 20 minutes of yoga
  • about 10 minutes of working in the garden (watering plants, pulling weeds, and a little bit of hoeing. It totally counts as a strength workout. πŸ˜‰ ).
  • 10 minutes of foam rolling/stretching

Accidentally slept through my alarm on Monday. Oops. That ended up making this run a little more difficult, as it was really starting to warm up, the sun was out and the pavement was reflecting that heat right back at me, and the humidity was at 99%. Fun times…I had to keep reminding myself that summer miles bring fall smiles, and all this hard, grinding work that I’m putting in now is going to hardcore pay off once the cooler months roll around.

Tuesday:

  • 4.5 miles
  • 40 minutes working in the garden

Got up with my alarm this morning, got out on the road just as the sun was coming up, and the humidity was only at 75% during my run on Tuesday. Yeah, this run was definitely better than Monday’s. πŸ™‚

Wednesday:Β

  • Rest Day
  • 25 minutes of yoga

I was feeling absolutely beat on Wednesday, so I decided to switch things around a little bit and take a rest day. I think that was a very good decision. I was just crazy tired all day, so rest day was probably necessary.

Thursday:

  • 5 Miles
  • 10 mintues of stretching/foam rolling

I’m really glad I ended up taking a rest day on Wednesday! Thursday’s run ended up being a lot of fun because of that, I think! Plus Revolution Radio makes every run better. πŸ˜‰

Friday:

  • 1 hour working in the garden

So this is when things started getting away from me a little bit…I was super tired Thursday night, so I ended up sleeping in until 7 on Friday, and by then it was super hot and sunny and I definitely did not want to run in that. So I thought maybe I’d try to get in a few miles in the evening.

That didn’t end up happening though. Luke and I spent most of Friday running around getting errands done, shopping, and working in the yard/garden. So by the time 7-8 pm rolled around I was too tired to even think about running. Even though I probably should have…oh well.

Saturday:

On Saturday my right shin, which is the shin that sometimes gives me trouble, was feeling sore and achy. Well that was no good. I didn’t want to risk running on it because there was once a time when I tried that and then ended up having to take a whole month off from running. So I spent my Saturday resting and icing my shin.

Sunday:

  • 1 mile
  • 40 minutes of yoga

My shin was feeling much better when I woke up this morning, so I decided to try out a short easy run. It felt great, but the rest of me well, not so much…I haven’t been sleeping very well lately but I’ve still been trying to wake up early, so I’m just tired. Despite all of my yoga, foam rolling, and compression sock wearing, my legs are still crazy sore and very heavy. I think they’re having some issues recovering since I’m not sleeping well. And don’t even get me started on the heat. The summer just isn’t a good time for me.

Anyway, since I am feeling tired and wore down in general, I only did an easy mile today and then followed that up with 40 minutes of deep yoga stretches. Hopefully that will help my legs feel a little better.

Processed with Rookie Cam

So since I’ve embarked on this challenge, I’ve really been trying to focusing on recovery and I Β guess I’m not doing enough because my legs are still crazy tired. I’ve been making sure I’m drinking enough water, replacing electrolytes (I sweat super salty), trying to eat a little bit better and at the correct times, napping when I can, doing lots of yoga, stretching, and foam rolling, and wearing my compression socks religiously.

But I guess all of that isn’t going to actually make much of a difference if I’m not sleeping well. I’m totally convinced that is my biggest issue right now. Unfortunately it’s really hard for me to get a really restful night of sleep when I’m hot, and my bedroom gets pretty darn hot in the summer. Haha the summer months just never go well for me it seems.

Total Weekly Mileage: 13.62

Total Monthly Mileage: 24.62

So I guess that puts me about 10 miles behind for the Tinman challenge. All things considered I guess that’s notΒ tooΒ bad. I’m thinking next week I’m just going to focus on sticking to the daily running plan and then worry about making up those 10 miles later (and I may never even get to that point, but I’m ok with that).

I hope your training has gone well this week!

Tinman Challenge Day 8

Taking the day off from running yesterday was exactly what I needed! Aside from my legs feeling really heavy (and I have a feeling they’re going to stay that way for another week or so, since I’m upping my weekly/monthly mileage with this challenge) I felt great!!

Not gonna lie though, I’m definitely not enjoying the fact that I have to wake up at 5 am. I’d probably feel a little better about it if I actually went to bed a little bit earlier haha. And in all fairness, I really do want to get to bed earlier, but Luke likes to stay up until 10 pm and then wont stop talking until 10:30-11 pm. And when he finally shuts up it takes me like half an hour to finally fall asleep. Basically what I’m saying is that it’s all Luke’s fault that I don’t get enough sleep. πŸ˜‰ But I’m lucky enough to be able to nap in the afternoon, so I’ll definitely be doing that later today. πŸ™‚

Anyway, my run this morning went pretty darn well. The daily running guide for the Tinman Challenge called for 5 miles today, so I ran those 5 miles and had fun doing it!

As much as I complain about having to wake up early in the summer, it does have it’s benefits. During my run it was about 57 degrees, the humidity was only around 76%, and there was a nice little breeze going on. So there was no drowning in my own sweat or dying of heat exhaustion today, which is always a bonus when it comes to summer running. And being able to watch the sunrise is pretty neat too, I will admit, but I still prefer fall/winter running over summer running. πŸ˜‰

Listening to Revolution Radio was another reason why this run was so much fun. Hahaha this album came out in October and I’m still not over how good it is!

So today’s run brings me up to 12.61 miles for the week so far and 23.61 miles for the month! I believe I am right on track to hit 93.3 which is the goal of this challenge that I’ve embarked on. I already knew I could accomplish this goal if I really worked toward it, and so far all I’ve done is confirmed that fact. So while this challenge is pretty difficult, i’m totally crushing it so far, and that’s super exciting. πŸ™‚

Anyway, like I had mentioned before, my legs were feeling really heavy and a little bit tight, but after about 2 miles they finally loosened up a little bit. Now that I’m done running though they are feeling a little bit worse than when I had started, so I’m definitely going to have to do some stretching and foam rolling today, because I’ve got another 5 miler tomorrow, and then a 6 mile run on Sunday. Fun fun fun!

But before I do any of that, I need a snack and another cup of coffee!

Wishing you lots of fun, safe, and happy summer miles!

~Ashley

The Tinman Challenge Day 6

This is the first full week of of the challengeville Tinman challenge that I’m participating in this month, and so far, so good I think. πŸ™‚

Yesterday I accidentally slept through my alarm, so I got up and out on the road a little later than I would have liked. It was warming up fast, the sun was out and the pavement was reflecting the light/heat right back at me, and the humidity was at 99%. Talk about a tough run…I got it done though! The daily run plan for the Tinman challenge calls for a 5k on Monday, so that’s exactly what I did even though there were plenty of times that I wanted to call it quits, cut this workout short, and walk home.

Processed with Rookie Cam

Monday’s run was hot, sticky, slow, and absolutely no fun…but I got it done!

Anyway, this morning and day 6 of the challenge went a little bit better. At the very least I got up with my alarm this morning haha. I kinda spent the night tossing and turning though. My bedroom gets super hot with me, Luke, 3 dogs, and a cat that had to be on my pillow all night, and I don’t really sleep well when I’m hot. I kept waking up all sweaty and gross, trying to find a more comfortable position to fall back asleep in. It was no fun and obviously it really made me dread my 5 am alarm.

img_3819

Once that alarm when off though, I was up and moving. πŸ™‚

So, have you ever woken up so hungry that your stomach hurt? And you know that the smoothie that you prepared the night before is just going to make it worse unless you eat something to soothe your stomach first? Because that’s exactly what happened to me this morning. I woke up with my stomach growling and gurgling so much that it was kinda painful, and the smoothie I had made last night had orange juice in it, so I knew that wasn’t going to help unless I ate something else first. Thank goodness for my stash of Honey Stinger waffles! One of those was easy enough to grab and eat quickly enough for me to not really lose any time, but still settle my stomach enough that I could drink my smoothie afterwards. Plus yesterday I realized just how well they pair with coffee (bonus points if you had the coffee maker ready the night before and just needed to press one button to get it going, like I did πŸ˜‰ )! Seriously though, dip your Honey Stinger waffles in coffee. It’s great! πŸ™‚

img_3812

Anyway, on the bright side, it was much less humid this morning than it was yesterday and since I got out just as the sun was starting to come up it didn’t feel as hot and gross out. That made this run a lot more pleasant than yesterday’s. Some cloud cover would have made it even better, but beggar’s can’t be choosers, I suppose. I’m just glad I didn’t feel like I was drowning in my own sweat like I did yesterday haha.

img_3821

For the most part I got 4.5 miles done without too many issues. I think I may have been a little dehydrated because my throat was super dry and I felt incredibly thirsty for almost the entire workout and near the end my legs were feeling a little heavy, but other than that my legs felt surprisingly fresh (probably because I actually foam rolled last night haha) and I had a decent amount of fun. Well, as much fun as I can have in the summer anyway. I’m already ready for the colder months haha.

Processed with Rookie Cam

After I got my run done I spent around 40 minutes working in my garden. Mostly just watering my plants, weeding, and hoeing. Fun times. But it would seem all of my hard work is paying off! My plants are getting huge!!

Anyway, I’ve showered, eaten a quick snack, and am currently considering napping. And it’s not quite 9 am yet! Hahah that’s one of the benefits of summer running; I tend to get A LOT done before 9 am.

Now then, about that nap… πŸ˜‰
