My Break From Being A Runner

Just in case anyone wanted to know how my Sunday morning went; I tried to brew coffee without the coffee. πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Honestly, that pretty much sums up my week. I ran a grand total of one time this week and that was a whopping two miles. Mostly because I’ve been sick and for a while there anytime I attempted to do anything physically active that seemed to make it worse. So on Thursday after my one very short run this week I decided that I was done for this week and I was going to take a break from being s runner. If that makes any sense? Hahaha it made sense to me anyway.

(Which is why there is no weekly recap this week. I really don’t have much to recap. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ)

So on Friday Luke and o did our usual every-other-Friday routine. He played 18 holes of golf in the morning and I road along with him in the golf cart (which was the fastest cart on this side of the Mississippi! πŸ˜‰). Then we went grocery shopping, ran some errands, and other random boring adult stuff, then we went to a second golf course. πŸ˜‚

The second course we went to is a walking course, which is a lot less fun after riding around in the fastest cart on this side of the Mississippi all morning, and I actually played at this one! We only did 9 holes though. I was hoping the physical activity would help clear out my nose and chest and make me feel a little better, but honestly I ended up feeling worse by the time we were done. But I did get a SpongeBob ball that day, so obviously that made things a little better. πŸ˜‰

At this point I was just so done. I was tired of being sick, tired of not running. But also tired of always being worried about running and training for races and trying to improve my fitness and all of that fun stuff. Stressed about the job search and kinda bummed about the fact that I’m probably going to end up working at the Clorox plant here in town. Which in and of itself isn’t bad. But the having to work 12 hour shifts overnight is going to be a tough transition for me.

So I did something that I rarely ever do anymore. I got two bottles of wine and drank on on Friday night and the other last night. That’s two evenings in a row that I spent pleasantly buzzed on wine stuffing my face with whatever I wanted and just completely ignoring all of the things that have been causing me stress lately. It was kind of nice, actually.

There was definitely wine in that mug. πŸŽƒπŸ˜‚

Honestly I couldn’t tell you the last time I drank two nights in a row. I don’t drink very often anymore and especially not a couple of nights in a row like that. Mostly because I just don’t feel great afterwards and that makes running hard. That or I just don’t run after a night of drinking. But like I said before, I was taking a break from being a runner. πŸ˜‰

So I spent my weekend attempting to read the last book in Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series. I say attempting because finishing a series is always hard. Especially when you’ve already read it many many times and you know stuff that’s about to happen and how it’s ends. I kind of hate how this series ends. Mostly because it’s not the ending I wanted. πŸ˜‚ The problem is the ending makes so much sense and it’s kind of perfect. So I guess that’s what makes it so good. I’m not ready for it to end for the 19th (anyone see what I did there πŸ˜‰) time yet so I’ve been slowly making su way through it. πŸ˜‚

In my procrastination of finishing this book series I’ve fallen waaay into a Weezer and Fall Out Boy rabbit hole. Two bands I haven’t really exploded much since high school. Except I do often get nostalgic and listen to their songs that I liked from way back when, but now I’ve been listening to their “new to me” stuff. Hahaha ever since the Hella Mega tour with Weezer, Fall Out Boy, and Green Day was announced all I’ve been listening to has been those three bands. πŸ˜‚

Ah man, I’d love too see a show on the Hella Mega tour, but at this point it’s looking like the closest they’re actually coming to me is Chicago which is like 8 and a half hours away from me. Under other circumstances and if I had the money I’d be willing to travel farther than that to see show on this tour, but I kinda hate Chicago (been there once and I never want to go back πŸ˜‚) and don’t really want to go there. Plus it’s at Wrigley Field and as a person from the St. Louis area and therefore and obligated Cardinals fan, I feel like I’m not allowed to get there unless it’s to see the Cards play against the Cubs. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚ (That is a joke my friends! For real though I just wouldn’t want to travel to Chicago. πŸ˜‰)

So for now I guess I’m just going to have to be content with YouTube videos and people live streaming shows on Instagram. Hahaha that’s always better than nothing!

Anyway, back to what I was originally talking about, my weekend was spent putting more time and energy into the other things that I love and not worrying about the fact that I only ran two miles this week, or that in 8 weeks I’m running two half marathons in two days (yikes!), and how poorly I feel like this whole training cycle has gone so far. I took a break from all of that and I think it was much needed!!

Today I focused on eating better and re-hydrating. I definitely needed to do that! But for the most part I spent my day listening to the And That’s Why We Drink podcast and cleaning, doing chores around the house, and just kinda reveling in the last day I’m giving myself to not be a runner. Tomorrow I’ll go back to being a runner and attempting to salvage my training somehow (and worrying about getting a job and all of that fun stuff) but not today. Today was a chill, kick back and relax while occasionally cleaning stuff kinda day. A good way to wrap up my little break from everything, I think. 😊

Happy Sunday, everyone!

New PR, Baby!!

I ran 8 freaking miles on the treadmill today! That’s the farthest I’ve ever gone on a treadmill!!! Hahaha that totally counts as a PR, right?? πŸ˜‰

Honestly though I didn’t actually plan on running 8 miles on the treadmill today, although I did plan to do my run inside. It’s heating up here in Kansas! It was hot and sunny today and I didn’t want to deal with that! Especially since I stayed up late last night, so I really didn’t want to have to wake up super early. And that, my friends, is why having a treadmill is nice! I was able to sleep in and run farther that I would have if I would have run outside. Probably.

Anyway, like I said, this wasn’t planned at all! Originally I was aiming for 4-5 miles for today. Being on the treadmill for extended periods of time is kind of a mind fuck for me. After about 3 miles I have to start playing some weird mind games with myself. Especially since for whatever reason, I can’t run as fast as I normally would be able to on the treadmill. It completely messes with my form and I basically slow down to a crawl, and I’m already a slow runner to begin with! So. Weird mental games have to happen. But I mean, whatever works, right? πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚

Luckily for me though I only had to do that a little bit near the end. Broadway Idiot was able to hold my attention and keep my mind from melting from boredom for the most part.

After I had hit about 5 miles I decided why not aim for 6? Then not even half way into my 6th mile I thought to myself “why not aim for 8? That’s only 2 more miles. And I’ve definitely got two more miles in me.” Hahaha yeah, that’s a nice little mind trick. πŸ˜‰ But it worked so I’ll take it!!

Also, having a very cute spectator definitely helped. Lily hung out with me while I got this one done. πŸΆπŸ’œ

So, 8 miles done and dusted! Which means my long run for the week is actually done, because 8 was the plan for this weeks long run. Not gonna lie, that’s kind of a nice feeling.

I feel like everything actually ended up working out so well because I ate pizza for dinner last night and for breakfast this morning, and I swear every time I do a run fueled on pizza it ends up being a really good one! Or ya know, at least decent. I wouldn’t call running on the treadmill “really good” because I always feel like I’m going to die if boredom, but at least my body felt good. πŸ˜‚ Hahaha anyway, apparently pizza is the perfect ratio of carbs and fat for me. It’s never not worked. So basically what I’m saying is I should eat more pizza. πŸ•πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‰

After this run I was exhausted! I think know it was more mental than physical. Don’t get me wrong, I still felt like I ran 8 miles (because I did πŸ˜‰) but man, being on the treadmill always feels harder that actually running outside. Which is kinda funny, because running on the treadmill is supposed to be easier than running outside. But again, I think it’s just a mental thing.

Anyway, the rest of my day was kinda chill. I spent a good portion of my afternoon reading, actually. I’ve been re-reading Stephen Kong’s Dark Tower series for like, the 5th or 6th time, and I always forget how much I get pulled into these books! I mean, Stephen Kong’s work always really draws me in. I’ve been a huge fan of his since I was a lowly 7th grader in desperate need of something more challenging that what we were reading in school. Hahaha Stephen Kings The Stand was obviously the right choice for a 13 year old. πŸ˜‰

But ever since then I’ve absolutely devoured his books, particularly the Dark Tower series. It’s just So. Good! I can’t recommend it’s enough!! it’s definitely my favorite book series ever!

After spending several hours with Roland and his Ka-tet I finally got my butt in gear and got a bunch of stuff done around the house. Nothing as exciting as running 8 miles on the treadmill though and I feel like that’s kinda saying something. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚

Anyway, I just wanted to share my little achievement with you today! I don’t like running on the treadmill so I’m kinda weirdly proud of myself right now.

But that’s all for now!

Until next time,

~Ashley πŸ‘½

Weekly Recap: May 7th-13th, 2018

This week was a good week. I’ve been having a little bit of trouble with my neighbor’s dog, Ozzy, but other than that, I’ve really got nothing to complain about! Well, except for the warm weather maybe, but we all know I’m never going to stop complaining about that. πŸ˜‰

Had some good runs, got my monthly StrideBox, my garden is growing and doing well, as are my chickens, and did one of my favorite races ever on Saturday. Like I said, it’s been a good week. πŸ™‚

Monday:

  • 4 miles

Kicked off the week with 4 hot and sunny miles! Obviously that’s not my favorite kind of weather, but I still had some fun.

img_1510-1

Tuesday:

  • 5 miles
  • 10 minutes of yoga

Tuesday was the day I had the most issues with Ozzy. When I woke up that morning I let the chickens out as usual, then went to eat breakfast. About a half an hour later I happened to look in my backyard and there was Ozzy, bothering the poor chickens. So I caught him, put him in his yard, fixed some of the bricks that were covering the holes next to the fence we share with this neighbor (we’re currently in the process of replacing it, so it’s in terrible shape right now), then headed out for my run. After about 3 miles I happened to run by my house and saw that Ozzy was in my yard again. So I had to stop, repeat the whole process again, and then went out and finished my last 2 miles. But of course when I finished that Ozzy was back in my yard again. So this time I put even more bricks in the holes by the fence and lined the outside of my chicken coop with them. He’s been trying to dig under it, so I’m hoping at the very least the bricks will slow him down enough for someone to realize he’s not where he’s suppose to be before he can hurt my chickens.

But anyway, at least I got my run in, and got some strength training done because dead lifting a 30 pound dog over a fence multiple times has to count for something, and moving all of those bricks around was hard haha.

Wednesday:Β

  • 4 miles

Another easy 4 miler on Wednesday. This time Ozzy stayed in his yard and Dean was waiting to great me when I got back! Nothing is better than getting ALL OF THE PUPPY LOVIN’ when you get back from a run. πŸ™‚

img_1553

Thursday:

  • rest day

I had 2 easy miles planned for Thursday but oh man was I tired! So I figured taking a rest day was probably a good plan. I actually ended up spending most of the day reading/finishing Cujo. Can you believe this was legit the first time I’ve ever read Cujo?!? Stephen King is my all time favorite author and it took me this long to read one of his most iconic books? That’s just nuts! Haha and I talk about that more here, if you’re interested. πŸ˜‰

Thursday was one of the packet pick up days for Running With The Cows, so I went to get mine that evening. How super neat is this t-shirt?!?

Friday:

  • 15 minutes of stretching

So, Friday’s tend to be the day Luke and I run around and do a bunch of errands, and this Friday was no different. In the morning we had to meet with our insurance agent to go over all of our policies. Fun Stuff. Then the rest of the day was actually spent getting the truck titled. First we had to take it to get inspected since Luke bought it in Missouri, then we had to wait at the DMV for 8 million years haha. We ended up getting so bored that we wandered around the building, found a blood pressure machine,so obviously we had to play with that. Good news is we both have good blood pressure!

When we finally got home that evening I did some stretching and got all of my stuff ready for Running With The Cows. πŸ™‚

Saturday:

  • Running With The Cows 5k

I had so much fun at this race!!!

I had a goal time of 38 minutes for it, but it was hot, humid, and this course is a bit hilly, so I ended up running it in 38:51. Not bad though! I’m very happy with how it went!! I’ll be posting a full recap on Monday, so stay tuned for that. πŸ„πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜„

Sunday:

  • rest day

I actually thought about doing a few easy miles today, but running in the heat yesterday really took it out of me! Plus my legs were a little sore from running hard on those hills. So I figured I could use a day off from running. I did spent some time cleaning out the rabbit cages today, cleaning out the chicken coop, and pulling a few weeds out of the garden, so at least I got a little bit of something done. πŸ™‚

img_1648

Total Weekly Mileage: 16.15

Considering the fact that I didn’t do a long run this week I’m pretty happy with that! Definitely not what I want to be and should be running, but still not bad. All in all I’m quite happy with how this week is gone and how well Running With The Cows went. But now that I’ve got that done it’s time to really kick into gear my “pre half marathon” training. I’m going to be focusing on more miles and strength training. I feel like being stronger and more resilient is going to help with the whole two half marathons in two days thing that’s going down in November. So bring it on!!

Oh and happy Mother’s Day you all of you awesome moms out there! You guys are true superheros!!

Until next time,

Thursday Things

Woke up early this morning, briefly considered doing my run, very quickly decided β€œfuck that”, and went back to bed. Haha I was just really tired. πŸ˜‰ But I only had an easy 2 mile run planned for today, so I figured skipping it wasn’t a big deal.

Once I did finally get up I ended up spend way too much time scrolling through all of my social media. Jeez that is a really good way to lose a good chunk of your time haha. But I did get to see a few of the cows that are going to be hanging out at the Running With The Cows starting line area and I was pretty excited about that! How adorable are these two?!? I’m very excited about seeing them on Saturday!

img_1572

Obviously this isn’t my photo. I screen shot it from the Running With The Cows facebook page.Β

Luckily I didn’t end up wasting my whole day on the social media. That’s crazy easy to do haha! Eventually I got up and got some stuff done. I cleaned the ferret cage while they ran around for a while, and then did some stuff in the garden. Mostly just watered it, but I pulled out a few weeds too haha. Everything out there is looking pretty good right now though! Before too long we’re gonna have a bunch of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, eggs, and all sorts of other good stuff. πŸ™‚ I’m very excited about that!

After the ferret cage was clean and the garden was watered I took Lily and then Dean for a walk, worked on a few blog posts, started some laundry and general tiding of the house, and then I sat down with another cup of coffee and the book Cujo. Can you believe this is legit the first time I’ve read Cujo?!? Stephen King is my all time favorite Author and he has been since I was in like, 7th grade. The first ever β€œgrown up” book I read was The Stand. 2 whole shelves on my huge book shelf are dedicated to and are absolutely overflowing with his books. But still, this is the first time I’ve read Cujo haha. But I mean, I’ve seen the movie about 8 billion times so I always reached for anther one of his books whenever I would go to get one. I’ve also never read Carrie or Pet Sematary. Pretty crazy, right? But again, I’ve seen both of those movies about 8 billion times as well. But since I’ve finally gotten around to Cujo I’ll eventually get to Carrie and Pet Sematary as well. I mean, the book is always better than the movie anyway. πŸ˜‰

Happy (Late) Birthday To Me!!

Well, not that late. Hahaha it was only yesterday. πŸ˜‰ I definitely felt an outpouring of love yesterday from all of my family and friends, both in real life and here on the interwebs. πŸ™‚

Anyways, I had a great day! I started it with a run! Yay! Haha I wasn’t sure if running 4 days after running a half marathon was going to be a good idea for me. After my previous 2 half marathons I took about 2 weeks of running to rest and recover and it was great! But this time around I didn’t feel like waiting that long. So I figured my birthday would be a good day to test out how my legs felt! So I ran for about 30 minutes (which ended up being around 2.2 miles). My legs felt a little stiff, sore, and tired, but it wasn’t too bad. Plus I had a lot of fun and that’s really all that matters. πŸ™‚

Processed with Rookie Cam

After my run I showered/bathed Finn. That’s always a fun time…He’s 10 months old, so he’s a whole lot of young, dumb, impatient, and whiny, in a full grown dogs body. So what I’m saying is that I had to hold his wiggly ass in between my knees (luckily I’ve got strong, runner’s legs πŸ˜‰ ), while I scrubbed him down and rinsed him off, because he can’t just stand there and take it, he actively tries to escape the shower. I also had to scrub mud off of his penis and testicles because he was just coated in it. Haha I definitely didn’t plan on getting all up in that dogs business that day, but hey, it happens. πŸ˜‰

img_7652

He was not happy with me after his bath.

I guess that was a little bit of a side tangent, so lets get back to birthday stuff! Luke’s dad and step-mom sent me the BEST birthday card ever. Seriously, I love it! The cat on it looks just like Bubbles and who doesn’t want a cat with lazer eyes lighting their birthday candles?

img_7654

I also got quite a few texts and a call from my grandma, so I actually spent most of the afternoon talking to my family. It was nice. πŸ™‚ One of my sisters is doing very well at her new nursing job and has already been offered a better position along with a raise. My other sister is currently in the process of buying aΒ crazyΒ nice house with her husband, who just recently got back from deployment. If she didn’t live 10 hours away I’d definitely be at that house all the time hahaha. πŸ˜‰ And my dad, who is legit the coolest, most awesome, and funnest dad ever, is gonna run a 5k with me on Thanksgiving!! Originally I asked him if he’d do a mile with me to kick off the Runner’s World Run Streak and he’s the one who suggested we do a 5k instead! My dad’s not really a runner so I was super surprised about that, but obviously I told him that would be even better! We looked online for a turkey trot to sign up for, but every turkey trot that was actually on Thanksgiving day was over an hour away from where they live, so we didn’t want to spend that much time driving on Thanksgiving, so were just gonna run around the lake near his apartment instead. It’s still gonna be lots of fun though and I’m so super excited!!! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

img_7687

I like to think that my dad and I are very similar people. πŸ™‚Β

So while I was talking to my family Luke had asked me where I wanted to go to eat for dinner. Haha he said originally he wanted to surprise me, but he wanted to tell me we were going out so that I didn’t make dinner and because he wanted to make sure I got exactly what I wanted. I appreciated that because I was literally about to start cooking hahah. Anyways, all I wanted was tiramisu (which is a weird thing to want I guess, but I’ve been thinking about tiramisu all week haha), so we ended up going to a nice Italian restaurant for dinner. I got an amazing order of eggplant Parmesan that came with really good herb pasta, and of course I got my tiramisu and it was fantastic! After we ate Luke set me loose in a bookstore. Luckily for him (because that could have takenΒ forever) I already knew exactly what I wanted, and it didn’t take me long to find it. πŸ™‚

img_7686

I’m so excited to read this!!!Β

After our dinner and bookstore adventure, we stopped at the liquor store to get drinks and then we went home and spent the rest of the night sipping our drinks and watching Who’s Line Is It Anyway? Well, Luke sipped his drink, I ended up drinking a whole bottle of wine hahaha. In all fairness though, Luke egged me on! He kept telling me it’s my birthday and I might as well, and asked me a few times if I was gonna finish the damn thing. So I did.

And last but not least, at some point yesterday morning, I learned that Victoria’s Secret’s Pink isΒ finallyΒ selling leggings with pocket!! As a person who never wears “real” pants and for real lives in leggings and yoga pants, this was legit the best discovery ever! So Luke ordered me a pair as a birthday gift, and they’ll be here later this month. I seriously can’t wait! I could absolutely use more pockets in my life!!!

img_7655

Oh man, it was such a good day! πŸ™‚ Although I’m definitely paying the price for drinking all of that wine! Woke up with a headache and dry mouth, but it’s all good and was totally worth it. πŸ˜‰

So many exciting things have already happened this month and we’ve still got Thanksgiving too look forward to! This is why I love the month of November, there’s just always a bunch of fun stuff going on.

Anyways, happy Friday eve everyone! I hope you all have a great day!!

Friday Fives: Things I’m Super Into Right Now

1. Green Day

Maybe it’s not exactly fair to say that I’m super into Green Day right now. I’mΒ alwaysΒ super into Green Day. Hence the tattoo pictured below. πŸ˜‰ But I mean, I kinda have to mention them, since Luke and I are seeing them for the second time a week from today! I seriously cannot wait!! Let super duper fan girl mode commence!!! πŸ™‚

2. The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King

Again, I’m not entirely sure this one counts as Stephen King is my favorite author and the Dark Tower Series is my all time favorite book series. But since the Dark Tower movie is coming out well, today actually haha, Mr. King has been tweeting/Facebook-ing quite a bit about it and that made me want to re-re-re-re-re-re read the series haha. And at some point I’d like to go see the movie, but I’ll probably just end up watching it on Netflix/dvd whenever it ends up getting released on one of those.

img_5283

3. My Homegrown Tomatoes

Yeah, I’m into my own thing right now. What of it? πŸ˜‰ Seriously though, my tomatoes are all starting to get ripe and I’ve been picking at least 5-6 everyday, so obviously I’ve been eating a lot of tomatoes. I’m not complaining though, they’re sooooo good!! πŸ™‚

img_5211

4. The Run, Selfie, Repeat, PodcastΒ

I guess I’m jumping onto the Kelly Roberts bandwagon a little late, but I have kind of a bad habit of resisting getting into things that are super popular. But I’ve been binge listening (that’s a thing, right? haha) to her podcast and I can see why she’s so popular in the running world. She’s super motivating and real and I can definitely get on board with that! If you’re looking for a new podcast I definitely recommend checking this one out (if you haven’t already, that is. πŸ˜‰ ).

img_5291

5. StrideBox

So at this point I’ve only gotten 2 StrideBoxes at this point (and in the sake of total transparency, StrideBox sent them to me for free), but I absolutely love this subscription box!

So I think I’ve said it here before, but I was always a little unsure about subscription boxes. I mean, I was kinda worried that they wouldn’t live up to all of the hype but StrideBox definitely has! It comes packed with products from well established brands along with products from new or not as well known brands, which I think is fantastic! I’m all for supporting small/new companies so this is a great way to learn about them! It’s also a great way for me to try out new things. I’m kind of aΒ creature of habit and don’t tend to stray from things I know, so that means I don’t often try new things haha. Also, I really like the sticker that comes in every box and the little card that contains a recipe and workout. I think that’s pretty spiffy!!

May 9th, 2017

Never in my life has a cold fucked me up the way this one has. It’s seriously beenΒ terrible. My voice is still really hoarse (I’ll add the link to my vlog from today below, if you want to hear how bad it is), my chest is still really congested, I’m coughing and hacking, my nose is still stuffy, and I still don’t feel all that great…

https://vid.me/pjV9

On the bright side, I do feel quite a lot better today! Much better than I felt over the weekend! I’m still doing my best to rest, eat lots off fruits and veggies, and hydrate. Which is actually going a lot better than it was over the weekend, because now I actually want to eat and drink. πŸ™‚

I also got in another short, slow “run” (there was quite a bit of walking done, for only doing a mile) this morning. These short easy runs have really helped clear out my nose and chest, but I’m still not up for doing much more than a mile yet and the warm weather sure isn’t helping. It was a little over 70 degrees when I finally hit the pavement today. I do need to start waking up before the sun gets up. That will make running feel a little better, but right now I’m just focusing on getting enough rest so that I can get over this damn cold. Then I’ll start worrying about waking up at 5 am, and getting back to a more normal running scheduled.

Processed with Rookie Cam

Anyway now that I’ve run and showered I guess I’m going to continue resting. All this sitting around is kinda driving me stir crazy, but I know it’s what my body needs right now, so I’m going to do it. I’ve started re-reading The Stand for the 8 billionth time, so that should help keep me busy. Yesterday I spent some time outside on my back porch reading, trying to get rid of my terrible running shoe tan lines, and soaking up some vitamin D. So I think I’m off to do do that again. I feel like helped a bit. And the ridiculous amount of blueberries that I ate yesterday probably helped a little bit too haha. Yay vitamin C and antioxidants!! πŸ˜‰

Wishing you a terrific Tuesday!!!
