Weekly Recap: May 7th-13th, 2018

This week was a good week. I’ve been having a little bit of trouble with my neighbor’s dog, Ozzy, but other than that, I’ve really got nothing to complain about! Well, except for the warm weather maybe, but we all know I’m never going to stop complaining about that. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Had some good runs, got my monthly StrideBox, my garden is growing and doing well, as are my chickens, and did one of my favorite races ever on Saturday. Like I said, it’s been a good week. ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday:

  • 4 miles

Kicked off the week with 4 hot and sunny miles! Obviously that’s not my favorite kind of weather, but I still had some fun.

Tuesday:

  • 5 miles
  • 10 minutes of yoga

Tuesday was the day I had the most issues with Ozzy. When I woke up that morning I let the chickens out as usual, then went to eat breakfast. About a half an hour later I happened to look in my backyard and there was Ozzy, bothering the poor chickens. So I caught him, put him in his yard, fixed some of the bricks that were covering the holes next to the fence we share with this neighbor (we’re currently in the process of replacing it, so it’s in terrible shape right now), then headed out for my run. After about 3 miles I happened to run by my house and saw that Ozzy was in my yard again. So I had to stop, repeat the whole process again, and then went out and finished my last 2 miles. But of course when I finished that Ozzy was back in my yard again. So this time I put even more bricks in the holes by the fence and lined the outside of my chicken coop with them. He’s been trying to dig under it, so I’m hoping at the very least the bricks will slow him down enough for someone to realize he’s not where he’s suppose to be before he can hurt my chickens.

But anyway, at least I got my run in, and got some strength training done because dead lifting a 30 pound dog over a fence multiple times has to count for something, and moving all of those bricks around was hard haha.

 

 

Wednesday:ย 

  • 4 miles

Another easy 4 miler on Wednesday. This time Ozzy stayed in his yard and Dean was waiting to great me when I got back! Nothing is better than getting ALL OF THE PUPPY LOVIN’ when you get back from a run. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thursday:

  • rest day

I had 2 easy miles planned for Thursday but oh man was I tired! So I figured taking a rest day was probably a good plan. I actually ended up spending most of the day reading/finishing Cujo. Can you believe this was legit the first time I’ve ever read Cujo?!? Stephen King is my all time favorite author and it took me this long to read one of his most iconic books? That’s just nuts! Haha and I talk about that more here, if you’re interested. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thursday was one of the packet pick up days for Running With The Cows, so I went to get mine that evening. How super neat is this t-shirt?!?

 

 

Friday:

  • 15 minutes of stretching

So, Friday’s tend to be the day Luke and I run around and do a bunch of errands, and this Friday was no different. In the morning we had to meet with our insurance agent to go over all of our policies. Fun Stuff. Then the rest of the day was actually spent getting the truck titled. First we had to take it to get inspected since Luke bought it in Missouri, then we had to wait at the DMV for 8 million years haha. We ended up getting so bored that we wandered around the building, found a blood pressure machine,so obviously we had to play with that. Good news is we both have good blood pressure!

When we finally got home that evening I did some stretching and got all of my stuff ready for Running With The Cows. ๐Ÿ™‚

Saturday:

  • Running With The Cows 5k

I had so much fun at this race!!!

I had a goal time of 38 minutes for it, but it was hot, humid, and this course is a bit hilly, so I ended up running it in 38:51. Not bad though! I’m very happy with how it went!! I’ll be posting a full recap on Monday, so stay tuned for that. ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜„

 

 

Sunday:

  • rest day

I actually thought about doing a few easy miles today, but running in the heat yesterday really took it out of me! Plus my legs were a little sore from running hard on those hills. So I figured I could use a day off from running. I did spent some time cleaning out the rabbit cages today, cleaning out the chicken coop, and pulling a few weeds out of the garden, so at least I got a little bit of something done. ๐Ÿ™‚

Total Weekly Mileage: 16.15

Considering the fact that I didn’t do a long run this week I’m pretty happy with that! Definitely not what I want to be and should be running, but still not bad. All in all I’m quite happy with how this week is gone and how well Running With The Cows went. But now that I’ve got that done it’s time to really kick into gear my “pre half marathon” training. I’m going to be focusing on more miles and strength training. I feel like being stronger and more resilient is going to help with the whole two half marathons in two days thing that’s going down in November. So bring it on!!

Oh and happy Mother’s Day you all of you awesome moms out there! You guys are true superheros!!

Thursday Things

Woke up early this morning, briefly considered doing my run, very quickly decided โ€œfuck thatโ€, and went back to bed. Haha I was just really tired. ๐Ÿ˜‰ But I only had an easy 2 mile run planned for today, so I figured skipping it wasnโ€™t a big deal.

Once I did finally get up I ended up spend way too much time scrolling through all of my social media. Jeez that is a really good way to lose a good chunk of your time haha. But I did get to see a few of the cows that are going to be hanging out at the Running With The Cows starting line area and I was pretty excited about that! How adorable are these two?!? Iโ€™m very excited about seeing them on Saturday!

Luckily I didnโ€™t end up wasting my whole day on the social media. Thatโ€™s crazy easy to do haha! Eventually I got up and got some stuff done. I cleaned the ferret cage while they ran around for a while, and then did some stuff in the garden. Mostly just watered it, but I pulled out a few weeds too haha. Everything out there is looking pretty good right now though! Before too long weโ€™re gonna have a bunch of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, eggs, and all sorts of other good stuff. ๐Ÿ™‚ Iโ€™m very excited about that!

After the ferret cage was clean and the garden was watered I took Lily and then Dean for a walk, worked on a few blog posts, started some laundry and general tiding of the house, and then I sat down with another cup of coffee and the book Cujo. Can you believe this is legit the first time Iโ€™ve read Cujo?!? Stephen King is my all time favorite Author and he has been since I was in like, 7th grade. The first ever โ€œgrown upโ€ book I read was The Stand. 2 whole shelves on my huge book shelf are dedicated to and are absolutely overflowing with his books. But still, this is the first time Iโ€™ve read Cujo haha. But I mean, Iโ€™ve seen the movie about 8 billion times so I always reached for anther one of his books whenever I would go to get one. Iโ€™ve also never read Carrie or Pet Sematary. Pretty crazy, right? But again, Iโ€™ve seen both of those movies about 8 billion times as well. But since Iโ€™ve finally gotten around to Cujo Iโ€™ll eventually get to Carrie and Pet Sematary as well. I mean, the book is always better than the movie anyway. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The Adventures of Half Marathon Training: Day 5

My hair situation is a whole lot better, in case you were wondering. ๐Ÿ˜„ Took me a little over 3 hours yesterday, but my chunk of hair is as close to bleach blonde as it will ever get and my roots aren’t showing! Even more surprising they aren’t orange, which’ll happen sometimes when I let them get really bad.

But enough about hair, let’s talk about running!! Today was a fartlek fartlek fartlek! Hahaha not only do I love saying it, I usually enjoy doing them as well.

For those of you who may not know, “fartlek” (seriously, who doesn’t smile when they it?!) is the Swedish word for “speed play”. Basically, it’s a super unstructured workout in which you literally play with speed.

For example; after warming up, I could decide to run hard to that mail box, run (or walk) at a recovery pace to the next light pole, run at a moderate pace up this hill, then sprint up the next hill, and then run at an easy pace until the end of this street, and so on and so forth.

So with that in mind, I set out to do a 25 minute fartlek while doing some Pokemon hunting. I figured I need to slow down to catch them, so that should work, right?

It turns out that it worked out really well!! I caught a few Pokemon, hit some Pokestops, hatched an egg, and most important, I finished my workout. Which actually ended up being 25:40 minutes long, but I just had to hit 2 miles. Haha I’m sure all of my fellow runners know the feeling. I mean, it just feels wrong to stop at 1.8 miles. Plus I felt pretty great the whole time, which is always a good thing!

Anyway, I’m trying to get into the habit of weeding the garden for 20-30 minutes after I run (which is exactly what I did today). Things are doing great out there, but it’s kinda becoming overrun with grass.So instead of trying to do it all at once, realizing I wont be able to do that, getting discouraged, and giving up on the whole thing, I’m going to do a little bit at a time and systematically get rid of the grass. At least that way I’ll be getting a little bit done almost everyday. Actually, I got quite a bit done in 20 minutes today! ๐Ÿ™‚

Like I said though, everything is doing really well out there. We’ve gotten a whole bunch of cucumbers which Luke has pickled. I think we’ve had something like 5 jars so far? I don’t remember exactly, but it’s been a lot and they are super good! I’ve also had a few HUGE zucchini! Unfortunately though, the squash bugs have found them and are killing my plants. I’m working on combating them, but last year they killed all of my squash plants. This year they’ve already killed my spaghetti squash…

Our tomatoes are probably our best plants right now! Our pear tomato plants have been kicking off perfectly sweet tomatoes for about a week now. These things are seriously like candy, they are so freaking good! And our beef steak tomatoes are just now starting to ripen! We’ve had 4-5 already (and of course Luke had to jar them ๐Ÿ˜‰ ), but i’m thinking in the next week or so we’re going to have more tomatoes than we know what to do with. ๐Ÿ™‚

On a very, very unrelated note, it’s Friday Friday Friday YAY! That means only 2 days until Harry Potter and the Cursed Child comes out and I absolutely cannot wait!!!!!! I’m so so so excited about this book and I really hope it’s as good as the other Harry Potter books. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

Friday Fives: 5 Things I’m Currently Super Into

1. Pokemon Go

I’m super obsessed with this app. I mean, it’s basically made all of my childhood dreams come true. I get to venture out into the world on my very own Pokemon adventure. Collecting them and battling gyms as I go. It’s pretty awesome!

2. Coffee

Once upon a time, I was addicted to caffeine (that was waaay back when I was in high school). I got my caffeine fix from sodas and energy drinks and gross stuff like that. But I broke that habit in 2012.

I think I’m hooked on it again though. With all this waking up early that running requires I’ve been heavily relying on coffee to get me going. Add some soy milk and honey. Perfect! ๐Ÿ™‚

Haha at least coffee is better than soda.

I’m just now getting around to watching this. I LOVED the first Avatar series so I figured I needed to watch this one too. So far, this one is a lot more heart wrenching than the first one, and I love it!
