Thursday Things

Buckle in my friends, I have quite a bit of stuff to talk about today! Mostly involving fun fall stuff, but some running stuff too! πŸ˜‰ Including a fantastic #throwbackthursday photo from the start of the Longview Half last year. So, let’s get started!

Processed with Rookie Cam

I don’t think Luke really understands why I love this season, or really just the last few months of the year, so much. And honestly sometimes I’m not sure either. Well, aside from the fact that the best holidays happen in October, November, and December, my birthday is in November, the weather is fantastic, and everything just feels all warm and cozy and festive. So never mind, I’m totally sure! πŸ˜‰ But he’s a wonderful husband and is always making sure I get to experience all of the fun fall/winter related activities! Even if they seem ridiculously small and almost meaningless. Like baking pre-cut, Halloween sugar cookies (for real though, I think we can all admit that these are some of the best cookies ever!).

img_5406

So yeah, I’m not sure that he gets it. But he’ll still randomly show up after he gets home from work with things like this, and it makes me so ridiculously happy. It really is the little things in life you guys. πŸ™‚ Haha he also knows me incredibly well! While I was making them he asked how many raw cookies I ate. πŸ˜‚ The answer was 4. But come on, cookie dough is delicious and has anyone actually ever gotten salmonella from cookie dough anyway. πŸ˜‰

He also lets me decorate ALL OF THE THINGS!! Haha inside and outside! Although this is the first year we’ve actually had inside Halloween decorations. He even helps me pick out new ones and put them up! Haha but I’m not allowed on ladders (worlds biggest klutzs here!), so he kinda has to. πŸ˜‰ Anyway, so far our yard is looking pretty spooky! We’ve got a nice little graveyard set up (pictured below), spooky spider webs all over our trees, and several bats hanging around. We had ghosts hung up too, but the wind blew them down haha. We’re gonna fix that though. And Luke wants to figure out a better way to set up our lights. His mom sent us some really cool ones, but our house has no outdoor outlets, so setting up lights is always a pain in the ass. Good thing Luke’s got a degree in electrical design. πŸ˜‰

img_5328

He also tolerates me sending him ALL of the Halloween memes and our neighbor’s Halloween decorations. And by the way, some of my neighbors are totally KILLING it with their decorations! I love it! I also love that I’m not the only one who likes to go all out for Halloween. πŸ™‚ So far these are a few of my favorite houses. Haha actually, I talk to the guy who lives in the red/white house all of the time. He’s a really cool guy! He has two black labs that are always excited to see me and he always goes all out with Halloween and Christmas decorations. Obviously his blowups aren’t currently inflated, but they’re still really neat!

So yeah, I’m currently having ALL of the fall fun and my husband is THE BEST! πŸ‚πŸŽƒπŸ–€

Okey dokey then, lets talk about running stuff!

So, today’s run should have been fantastic! The weather was great, the leaves in my neighborhood are starting to change, everyone is starting to put up their Halloween decorations (haha the two photos above are actually from my run this morning), and I felt pretty great! Well, except for my right shin actually.

I am what most people would refer to as an β€œinjury prone runner”. A lot of that actually has to do with my klutzy-ness, but I also have notoriously weak hips. Which has caused me problems with my IT bands and shins. I’ve also had plantar facial issues, but that was from running in a pair of shoes that were waaay too supportive for my very high arches in my feet. πŸ™ƒ

Anyway, I was just beginning to think I might make it through this training cycle unscathed. I’ve been working on my hips and doing a pretty good job of keeping up with my recovery activities, but this morning my right shin/knee was feeling kind of off this morning… That’s actually super weird because it’s usually my left leg that’s the problem, but whatever. πŸ˜‚ So at first my stubborn ass thought I was just going to run through it and finish my 5 mile run as planned. I have a ridiculously high pain tolerance, so that was something I could have easily done. But the more I thought about it the more I realized I needed to stop. I’m obviously going to be better off taking care of what’s hopefully just a niggle and not a full blown injury before it gets any worse. I’m actually really good at being a lot more hurt than I think I am because of my crazy pain tolerance. So yeah, I made it 2.5 miles before I decided that those last 2.5 miles weren’t going to be worth it. πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Honestly though, I think whatever it is that I’ve done to myself happened on the treadmill yesterday. I legit can’t run properly on a treadmill. I thought that maybe I was starting to figure it out, but apparently not. I’m beginning to think treadmill running is actually a hazard to my health.

Processed with Rookie Cam

So I’ve spent the rest of the day resting my leg. I’m wearing my compression gear and did a bunch of stretching and foam rolling this afternoon. And I plan on taking tomorrow off too. I’m hoping that if I rest it and give it a little extra TLC that it will feel good enough to do my long run on Saturday. Possibly Sunday if it’s still feeling off on Saturday. But anyway, hopefully it’s just a little niggle from running weird on the treadmill.

Moving on, I’m super duper excited to announce that I get to be a part of the Honey Stinger Hive for the 3rd year in a row! πŸπŸ―πŸ’œ

img_5404

I’m sure by now a lot of you know that Honey Stinger waffles are my go-to running fuel! They’ve gotten me through 3 half marathons and most of my training! Along with their chews and new cracker and nut butter bars. Those things are amazing!

Of course I love the product, but what I really love is the community that Honey Stinger has created. Some of us are runners, cyclists, swimmers, hikers, surfers, snowboarders, golfers, the list goes on and on and on! But no matter how fast or slow, what sport or activity you participate in, what walk of life you’re in, whether you’re a stay at home mom, 9-5er, or a professional adventurer, you’re a complete beginner or are going pro, everyone is here for each other. Always positive. Always supportive. No one gets left out. And I just think that’s the bee’s knees. (See what I did there. πŸπŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚). So I’m very stoked that I have the privilege of representing this brand for another year. πŸ™‚

img_5047

Alrighty, as promised, the fantastic #throwbackthursday photo from last year…

Have you ever looked back through old race photos and thought to yourself “wow, I’m super photogenic!” Yeah, me neither. In all fairness though, getting your headphone placement just right is super important. Especially at the start of a race.

img_5384

I couldn’t remember if I’ve actually shared this photo on here or not, but I figure it’s too good not to. Haha I find candid race photos to be very amusing. And why not? It’s hard to look good for a camera when you’re focused on the task ahead. It makes for fun photos to look back on. At least I think so. πŸ˜‰

Whew! Alright! I’m pretty sure that covers everything for today!

I hope you have a great Thursday and the MOST fantastic fall!

Yesterday Was A Good Day

And I think today is going to be a good day as well, but first we need to talk about how a easy 2 mile run turned into a “long” run. πŸ˜‰

So Luke and I have been waking up around the same time for the past couple of days and that’s been really nice. That means he’s been sleeping in a little bit and I’ve been waking up a little bit earlier, but I think it’s been worth it. πŸ™‚ Anyway, we woke up to a chilly, cloudy, slightly drizzly day yesterday! My favorite!!

img_6956

So we got up, Luke got dressed and was off to work, and I let the dogs out, made myself some super yummy oatmeal and coffee, ate, checked the weather (it was 47 yesterday morning and felt like 42 πŸ™‚ ), and got dressed and ready to run in some of my favorite weather!

img_6961

So my original plan was just to do 2 or 3 easy miles, nothing too exciting. But once I stepped outside I knew that wasn’t gonna happen. Especially since the temperature dropped a little bit more while I was out and I just couldn’t waste such a nice, chilly day on such a short easy run, so I did 8 instead. Hahaha because that’s the obvious solution. But in all fairness, that means I’ve knocked out my “long” run for the week so now I wont have to worry about that anymore. Plus I had quite a bit of fun! The colder weather tends to do that to me. πŸ™‚

img_6969

So yeah, I did have fun but I also did a little bit of struggling haha. I suppose that’s to be expected though, this was the first long run I’ve done in 2 ish months so I kinda saw that coming. Actually, the first 2 miles were absolute hell but they got progressively better after that, up until the last mile and a half ish. That was also pretty awful. By then my legs were hurting a little bit and I was super tired, but hey, still made it 8 miles! πŸ™‚

Processed with Rookie Cam

After spending that much time out in the cold yesterday morning (which don’t get me wrong, I very much enjoyed!) I wanted to get myself warmed up again, so I had some hot apple cider, which was absolutely heavenly, and took a long, super hot shower. That was a also really really nice. πŸ™‚ Then I put on my comfiest sweat pants, warm winter socks, and a flannel shirt over a t-shirt and cuddled on the couch with the dogs while I watched Netflix and did some blogging. So those were pretty much the best post run activities ever. πŸ™‚ I also tried to nap a little bit, but that just wasn’t going to happen. Does anyone else have this problem? Where you’ll be absolutely exhausted after a run but just can’t fall asleep? Because I seem to have that problem often haha. Oh well, that’s alright though because I ended up sleeping crazy well last night.

img_6976

Haha this photo was taken pre-shower. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, I ended up doing a whole lot of nothing for the rest of the day because I was so freaking tired after not really running longer like that for a while. But I am a little bit more confident about the half marathon in November so that’s good. πŸ™‚

So like I said, I slept pretty darn well last night, but I’m still kinda tired haha, so I guess today is going to be a rest day. πŸ™‚ It’s looking like it’s going to be another chilly, dreary day though so I’m sure I’m going to spend quite a bit of time walking the dogs out in the nice weather. πŸ˜‰

Happy Hump Day!

Friday Fives: Reasons Why I’m Super Duper Excited About Fall

All right, all right, I know that most of you guys probably know that I absolute love everything about fall (and winter, but lets focus one one season at a time πŸ˜‰ ). But I can’t help it! I am a cold weather person, I do not do well in the heat/summer time, and lets be honest, October through December is pretty much the most exciting and beautiful time of year!! πŸ™‚

img_6444

1.Β Fall RunningΒ

I guess this may be a bit obvious, but hey, this is a running blog after all! And besides, fall is probably the best season for running! The temperature is usually pretty close to perfect, the scenery is beautiful, there are an abundance of races, you don’t have to wake up super early to hit the road before the sun comes up, getting to see everyone’s Halloween decorations, being able to drink a nice warm drink when you get home, I could probably go on an on and on haha.

Now unfortunately I’m still injured and unable to do much running right now, but I’m still dreaming about long, tough, beautiful autumn runs.

2. Halloween!!Β

I mean come on, who doesn’t love Halloween? You get to dress up, watch scary movies, and eat obscene amounts of candy. What’s not to love? πŸ˜‰ Oh and not to mention all of the fun, Halloween themed races that I swear one day I’m going to participate in.

cropped-img_2987.jpg

3. PumpkinΒ Picking Adventures

Luke and I kind of have this tradition of going pumpkin picking. We’ve done it every year since we’ve moved to Kansas. Hahaha I think it’s so much fun and just about the best thing ever to search through a field for the perfect pumpkin, picking it yourself, and then taking it home and carving it. Unfortunately for Luke, he doesn’t find any of that as enthralling as I do, but he puts up with it because he knows it makes me happy.

4. Fall Food

Chili, baked apples, homemade applesauce, soups, squash, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin EVERYTHING! Oh and not to mention every food ever served at Thanksgiving ever (well, exept for things that contain pecans. I hate pecans haha πŸ˜‰ )! I think it’s all great haha! It seems like both Luke and I get into a super duper cooking mood once fall rolls around, so we always end up making lots of super yummy stuff! Fresh squash soups, chili with our home grown tomatoes and peppers, pies, cookies, bread, and anything that involves pumpkin, both Luke and I end up making from scratch, It’s lots of fun!! πŸ™‚

554bf1ca-59b1-4e96-a562-c6a64c805015

Last year we went apple picking and ended up with a piss ton of apples, so we made applesauce! Here’s the recipe if you’re interested!

5. Fall FoliageΒ

I don’t care what anyone says, fall is the prettiest season ever. That is all. πŸ˜‰

Fall Is Almost Here, Two Short Runs, An Injury Update, Compression Gear, and Another Furry Friend

First and foremost, #ThrowbackThursday anyone? πŸ˜‰ Ah man, throwback Thursday never ceases to amuse me. I just think it’s fun to take a look back at past life experiences, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they might be.

So, since fall is almost here and I’m so super duper excited about that, I went perusing through the camera roll on my phone this morning looking for the photos of my jack-o-lanterns from last year, because they were pretty darn spiffy if you ask me!!

I was so super excited about how the 13.1 pumpkin turned out! I was kinda worried about it because I thought it was going to be hard to tell what it was, but once it was lit up it looked pretty good! And look at all the hair I used to have!! Haha not gonna lie, looking back I kinda regret cutting it all off. But it was sooo much nicer not having to deal with all of that hot hair over the summer. But anyways, now I’ve got to figure out what I want to do with this years pumpkins! Haha obviously I’ve still got some time, but I take this stuff very seriously! πŸ˜‰ We’re starting to get close to my favorite time of year and I’m so super stoked!!

img_6248

TRUE!!!!!

So now that we’re into the middle of September we’re starting to experience a bit of fall like weather in the morning/evening. The highs in the afternoon have been in the 80’s though so that still kinda sucks, but we’ll get to the colder weather eventually. πŸ™‚ But anyways, the nice weather in the morning is really reallyΒ reallyΒ making me miss running. Fall running is the best running (except once winter rolls around, then I’ll spend all season telling you that winter running is the best πŸ˜‰ ) and right now I definitely feel like I’m missing out!!

I have managed to do two very short runs this week. 2 miles on Monday and 2 more miles on Wednesday. That’s definitely not the kind of running I should be doing considering that I’m supposed to be training for my 3rd half marathon, but at the moment it’s the only kind of running I can do. And it’s still totally better than not running at all!!

Unfortunately the 4 miles that I’ve run this week were not pain free miles. During both runs my knee started to ache a bit during the second mile and on Wednesday I felt it a little bit in my shin as well. That was no bueno…but it’s still not as bad as it was last month and I like to think it’s finally starting to get better. Healing this whole situation has definitely been a slow process, but I’m glad that it seems to be getting better without the help of a doctor. Because IΒ reallyΒ didn’t want to have to go see one haha.

So I think I’ve mentioned before that I’ve been taking R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation) very seriously in order to get this thing taken care of. Obviously the rest has come in the form of not running, but I’ve also been trying to take it easy and walk a little less if it starts bothering me. I was icing it for a while but that doesn’t seem to be doing anything for it anymore. And honestly I’m pretty sure icing is really only effective for the first like, 48 hours or something like that after you’ve been injured (I’m not entirely sure about that though, so don’t quote me on it. πŸ˜‰ ). So that brings me to compression and elevation. As far as elevation goes, I’ve just been propping my leg up with a pillow in the evening whenever i’m sitting down watching TV, but my compression game has definitely been VERY strong!

img_6164

I’m sporting a very old compression sock and a very new compression knee sleeve in this photo.

So Luke’s just as determined to get me healthy again as quickly as possible so he’s been making me experiment with some new gear haha. First he got me the knee sleeve pictured above. Oh boy does that thing work! I didn’t realize that my knee was actually hurting while I was walking until I started wearing this thing around haha (this right here is why I have to be super careful when it comes to injures. I have a ridiculous pain tolerance and sometimes I don’t notice that anythings going on until after it goes away and I start feeling normal again…). And after wearing it for about a week I was able to do my two short runs this week, which was obviously a huge improvement over not being able to run at all. πŸ™‚ So because I had quite a bit of success with the knee brace, Luke thought hey, if a little bit of compression worked, why not go with EVEN MORE compression. So he came home with a pair of full on compression tights for me the other day haha. I kinda wish he hadn’t spent so much money on me for this stuff, compression gear (especially these tights, holy shit) isn’t cheap…but I mean, they are some super spiffy looking tights. πŸ™‚

Processed with Rookie Cam

I’ve only worn them once, so at this point there’s really no telling if they made a difference, but they’re still super spiffy. πŸ™‚

So all of that actually came about because I had ordered myself a new pair of Zensah compression calf sleeves (like I said, my compression socks are really old, and I’ve had to cut the toes off of both pairs that I have because they make my toes uncomfortable, so I figured sleeves were the way to go. πŸ˜‰ ) and a sports bra at some point last week, I think? The only problem with that is that Zensah’s warehouse is located in southern Florida so they had to close up shop and evacuate because of hurricane Irma, so I guess they’re not entirely sure when they’ll be able to ship out anything. And like, obviously that’s totally understandable and I don’t mind waiting, but Luke is not a patient person and apparently that applies to me as well, and that’s how I ended up with even more compression gear hahahahaha.

So like, I know compression gear is one of those things that some people absolutely swear by and other people just think is a placebo kinda thing, but it’s always seemed to work for me so I’m just gonna roll with it! πŸ™‚

Whew, alrighty then! Last on my agenda of this to talk about today is our newest furry friend! Everyone, meet Alfred!

img_6368

So kind of on a whim I guess, Luke decided that our other ferret, Bruce, needed a friend. So he went and got him one last night. Hahaha if you haven’t noticed, once Luke sets his mind on something he just goes and does it. And that’s how we ended up with another ferret. It’s really funny because everyone thinks all of the animals were my idea (because I’m the huge animal lover who was raised on a farm), but aside from the cats and Lily, Luke’s the one who went out and got the rest of them haha. I mean, I’m not complaining though. πŸ˜‰

At first we were both a little wary about introducing them to each other. Luckily we have two ferret cages so if it didn’t go well we could have kept them separate, but it looks like that’s not going to be a problem. They pretty much liked each other right off the bat and are already becoming fast friends. So I guess Luke was right, getting Bruce a friend was a good idea. And I mean, what good is Bruce Wayne without Alfred Pennyworth? πŸ˜‰

img_6385

Okey dokey then! That’s all I’ve got to talk about for today! I’ve been doing a terrible job at keeping up with everyone lately, so what’s going on with you? Are you excited about fall? Any up coming races, spiffy new gear, new furry friends, new PR’s, or are you sidelined with an injury as well?

Anyways, I hope everyone has a happy Friday eve, a great Friday tomorrow, and an even better weekend!

Weekend ShenanigansΒ

Oh man, we’ve had a fun filled weekend here at the Dailey homestead! I think one could argue that a little too much fun was had on Saturday, but I’ll get to that in a moment.

Luke had Friday off from work, so it was a long weekend for us. That’s always a good time! Unfortunately for me, I only got 3 hours of sleep on Thursday night (well, I guess technically it was Friday morning), so I was kinda running on fumes and in a semi dazed state all day. Good times.

In all honesty it actually wasn’t all that bad. I think mostly because I still ran in the morning and it was slightly wet and chilly outside. That’s pretty much guaranteed to wake you up! How I stayed awake all day, I’m not sure. I guess because we stayed pretty busy. After my run Luke and I ran a few errands, stocked up on food, and then decorated the house for Halloween.

Processed with Rookie Cam

Friday’s run was supposed to be a fartlek. That didn’t happen, but it still ended up being a decent run. πŸ™‚

Our neighbors probably think we’re crazy with all the holiday decorating we do. Especially since we don’t have kids or anything…well, most of them already know I’m a little nuts. They see me out running all the time in the snow, rain, heat, and gloom. I’m like a mailman in that regard. πŸ˜‰ Anyway, we are just three full grown adults who take holidays very seriously hahaha.

We definitely upped our Halloween game this year! We currently have lights, spider webs, ghosts, bats, a mini grave yard, and a scarecrow. It’s pretty freaking sweet.

img_9199

Like I said earlier, Saturday was when things got a little out of control. At least they did for me. I started the day off with a long run, as usual. I really didn’t want to get up and do this run. Sleeping in and taking the day easy peasy sounded like a lot more fun, but I’m training for a half marathon and I want to do well, so I got up and did it anyway. I’m really glad I did, too. I ended up having fun and I PR’d my 10k time! Go me!

img_9234

The day before Luke bought a whole turkey and a bottle of sweet red wine during our grocery shopping adventures. The turkey because he’s smoked/grilled/cooked pretty much every other kind of meat already, so he wanted to try his hand at a whole turkey, and the wine because we have a small fruit fly infestation in our kitchen right now, and leaving out a small glass of wine is usually a good remedy for that issue. Plus Luke knows I like me some sweet red wine. That kinda ended up being my downfall.

After I got back from my run, Luke got the turkey going on the smoker. Since he had to baste it every hour or so we ended up spending a good majority of the day sitting in the backyard, listening to music. Around 5 pm he said something about not thinking I could drink almost a whole bottle of wine, so of course I had to prove him wrong. Which I totally did, by the way. Then I had a few beers, then a few sips of whisky. Not the best decision on my part.

Drinking large quantities of alcohol is just something I don’t do anymore. At least not often. I enjoy the healthy lifestyle I’ve adopted, I like being clear headed, and waking up bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning, so alcohol doesn’t exactly fit into that equation and that’s fine by me. But after all that wine, I thought a few Sam Adams Oktoberfest’s would go really well with the turkey (which turned out super tasty, by the way!). Then after we ate we walked to the park because playing on the swing set sounded like the most exciting thing ever, which it totally was. While walking to/from the park I had a few sips of whisky and kinda felt like a teenager again haha.

Once we got back from the park Luke noticed that I looked really red, so he made me eat and drink a bottle of water. That probably saved me from feeling too awful this morning, so I’m super grateful for that. After we ate we baked a pumpkin pie, because who the heck doesn’t want a pumpkin pie at 10:30 at night?!? πŸ˜‰

Oh man, good times…I still felt kinda gross this morning though, so today became a hardcore recovery day. First we took the dogs to the dog park, though. They really needed that today, plus a little walking around was probably good for us humans too. Ever since then we’ve just been kinda chillin and I’ve been chugging water. That’s definitely helped a lot me feel better, but hey, at least I had fun. 😁

So at some point this weekend (Friday, I think?) the KC running company posted a picture of the Longview Half’s shirt/finisher medals on their Facebook page.

How freaking awesome are they?! Last year I just got a long sleeved tshirt (it’s still a really nice shirt, this years just looks more exciting) and this years finisher medal is different, which I think is pretty neat, although last years medal was super spiffy too. πŸ˜„

Last years tshirt/finisher medal

On a completely unrelated note, I kinda wish my hair was still that long, but I also kinda want to cut it all off…Anyway, as of today there are only 27 more days until I run my second half and I’m super stoked and crazy nervous! I can’t wait for November 12 to get here, but at the same time I wish I still had more time. It’s a strange feeling.

Welp, I think that’s everything I wanted to talk about today, so I’ll leave you with Bouncing Off The Wall, because I said I was going to post every song from Revolution Radio on here, and I really mean to do it! 😁

Halloween Playlist

IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR!!!

You’re probably going to be see me saying that all fall/winter. October-January is my favorite time of the year!! πŸ™‚

Since it’s my most favorite time of year, I have some pretty awesome playlists put together. Well, I think they’re awesome anyway. This one has been a few years in the making and I still don’t feel like it’s quite done yet. Halloween specific songs (or at least songs that are sorta Halloween-y) that I actually like seem kinda hard to find. I am, however, quite happy with what I have so far! This playlist is super fun, whether you’re running or decorating for Halloween, it’ll definitely get you in a spooky mood.

Goodbye September!Β

And Hello October!! I’ve waiting for like, 10 months. Glad the wait is finally over! πŸ˜‰

Anyway, Luke and I had a very fun filled, fall day!

I started the day with a quick and easy 2 mile run. I was supposed to do a long interval session but my toe is still a bit swollen, and it got worse after I did a short interval session earlier this week, so I figured it was best to keep things easy. Especially since I’m doing a 10 miler tomorrow!

It would have been nice to be able to add 10 miles to the month of September. Since I had to take a week off because of the whole toe incident I was about 18 miles under last months total milage. Oh well, at least I’ll be starting October off with a bang! πŸ˜„

After my run and a quick shower, we went to Dick’s Sporting Goods to get some fuel for my run tomorrow and next week’s long run.

After that, Luke took me apple picking! We had kind of a dry summer followed by some crazy thunderstorms not too long ago, so a lot of the apples were split and mushy. Even so, we still found 20 pounds worth of good apples! Mostly Jonathan, but we also got some gala and Granny Smith apples. We plan on using them to make apple butter, more jam, apple sauce, and possibly a pie! So that should be fun!

Once we had our 20 pounds of apples, we took to the pumpkin patch to find us some big pumpkins. Which we did! We got two nice jack o lantern pumpkins and a cute little guy. πŸ˜„

We’re both very happy with our haul! 😁 Once we got home we ordered a shit ton of pizza and have been eating that and watching Netflix ever since haha.

I hope you’ve had a Good Friday as well!
