Half Marathon Training Officially Begins Today!

But also not-so-yay. The last past couple of months haven’t been great for me running-wise. Between having my brother in staying with us since the end of May, then my sister in law also staying here for a week, traveling, the heat wave, and all of my other responsibilities, we’ve just been super busy and I haven’t been very motivated. Obviously I enjoy having my family stay with me, but oh boy does it throw me off! I’m a very routine oriented person and when my routine gets thrown off my whole being feels kinda thrown off. πŸ˜‚ I have GAD, so routines and having well laid out plans is something that I find very comforting. πŸ˜‚

But, I really need to get my ass into gear because come the second weekend of November, I’m tackling two half marathons in two days!!

Anyway, things around here are starting to slow down and go back to normal again. One of my sister in laws came and picked up my brother in law and is taking him back home to Minnesota until next summer, probably. It kinda sucks that our fun has come to an end, but not gonna lie, I am a little bit excited about being able to not have to tip toe around in the mornings, and actually do my running warm ups. I haven’t really been doing that because he’s been sleeping on our couch and I didn’t want to wake him up with all of my shenanigans. Especially not on the days where I had to wake up at 5 am. πŸ˜‚

Now all we’ve got left for the summer is a trip to Illinois this weekend and then things will be back to normal! Almost just in time for half marathon training. πŸ˜‰ Since we are going to be traveling this weekend I’m going to have to switch some things around on my training plan, but then after that it should be relatively smooth sailing in the schedule department, at least.

So, Week 1 Day 1 of half marathon training. I kicked things off with an easy 3.5 mile run!

We’ve been experiencing the horrible heat wave that’s been affecting a good portion of the US here in Kansas, but yesterday we got a good amount of rain and that cooled things off quite a bit! When I started my run it was 66 degrees out. It m. Was. Glorious!! The only thing that could have made it better was a little bit of cloud cover, but after the weather we’ve been having, I’ll gladly take the 66 degrees!!

That was a pretty great way to kick off training! Although my quads were still crazy sore from a kettlebell workout I did on Saturday. πŸ˜‚ Hopefully this run helped flush them out a little bit, but really I guess I’ll just have to wait and see how they feel tomorrow.

Anyway, I guess that’s where I am right now. Dreaming of fall. Officially in my next training cycle. And desperately trying to get my shit together. πŸ˜‚ I’ll get there eventually though. πŸ˜‰

Happy Monday and good luck to everyone who are also starting training plans today!

Wishing you many happy miles,

Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days: Take Two is Officially A-go!!

Woohoo!! As of Saturday I am officially registered for the Gobbler Grind half marathon! That means Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days: Take Two is officially a-go!! 😱

Apparently hanging up my fliers at the Indian Creek Trail and at the office where Luke works really worked! So far I’ve had 8 people sign up for the Gobbler Grind using my ambassador discount code which means I got to register for free (I only needed 5 for that. πŸ˜‰). Sweet!!!

Some ambassador programs are definitely better than others! 😁 Some just give you a discount, but others (usually ones that you have to work a little bit harder for) have better benefits like this! And I’m not trying to brag or anything like that! Just keeping it real and everything in full disclosure! I am an ambassador for this race (and several brands) so I do get some perks from all of that. But I do strive to keep everything I post in here 100% real. I would never promote or become involved with a brand or race that I didn’t believe in or love.

Hahaha and I know I always say something like that whenever I talk about any of that ambassador programs I’m in, but like I said, just trying to keep it real on my little corner of the interwebs! πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

So anyway, Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days: Take Two is officially official! Yay!!

And right before I “officially” kick off my half marathon training cycle too!! Hahaha I say “officially” because my training plan actually starts next week, but I’ve been training with Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days: Take Two in mind since the beginning of this year, really.

I would be a lot more stoked about the start of my half marathon training plan if the last week of June and first week of July didn’t have so little running in them… Those weeks I only totaled 11 mile and the 7 miles respectively. Oops. But I mean, it’s been a busy summer and life just kinda happened. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Really though I was doing pretty well, at least mileage wise, up until that point though and I really got my shit together last week and got in 18 miles. Not what I’ve been aiming for, but not terrible. And I’m really focusing on making this week even better, so I should be ok in that department. I won’t be going into this training cycle ridiculously out of shape at least! πŸ˜‚

The real issue here is that I haven’t really done any speed work since this spring. Yikes. Since I’m tackling two half’s in two days I don’t really have a time goal for either. Especially since I’m running both races with my dad. But really, I should still be doing some speedier things…

Oh man the first few speed sessions of half marathon training are really going to hurt. 🀣

But all in all I am pretty excited to “officially” start training for this thing next week! Hopefully it’ll all go smoothly! Or as smoothly as summer running can ever go for me. Hahaha I am not a fan. πŸ₯΅ But summer miles bring fall smiles! So I’m going to do my best to stick with it!

And doing my best apparently means waking up at 5 am so I can get out the door before the sun comes up and slogging through 3 very slow, slightly painful miles. At least, that was my “best” this morning. Really I wanted to get in 5 miles today, but my legs are shot from walking around the zoo in Doc Martens all day on Saturday. My sparkle boots (Doc Martens 1460 Pascal Glitter πŸ˜‰) are very pretty and SUPER comfortable! But they are a lot heavier than the shoes that I have been wearing lately.

I actually experienced this every fall when I got from wearing mostly tennis shoes and flip flops to wearing heavier boots. My legs always feel a little heavy when I start my footwear transition. πŸ˜‚

Worth it! I got several compliments on my boots that day. 😊

So, 3 miles today! I think my slow slogging (in my super light Nike Free’s! πŸ˜‰) helped shake out my legs a little bit though. So hopefully tomorrow’s run will go a little bit better! Either way, still got in 3 miles before the sun had a chance to rise and really heat up the road, so I’ll take that as a win!!

After I finished my slow slog run I spent about an hour and a half tending to my chickens and my garden. I had quite a bit of weeding to do. πŸ˜‚ But my tomato plants are finally starting to go off!! They’ve had a bunch of green tomatoes on them for a while now but they’re starting to get ripe! Plus I’ve got these HUGE green tomatoes out there and I absolutely cannot wait for them to to finally turn red!!

Our garden is much smaller than it’s been in previous years. This year we’ve only got tomato plants, pepper plants (which I’ve already gotten one huge, green pepper from, cantaloupe plants, and cucumber plants (which are just now starting to grow little tiny cucumbers!!!). But it’s doing MUCH better than last year. Last summer was absolutely BRUTAL. It was crazy hot and sunny pretty much every day and I’m not even exaggerating when I say we went two whole months without a drop of rain. It was crazy! But this year has been sooo much better and we’re definitely going to get a much better produce yield, which means we’ll actually have some stuff to can! Yay!!

Anyways, that’s all for today!!

Happy Monday! I hope you have a fantastic week!

Until next time,

Weekly Recap: July 8th-14th, 2019

So having two teenagers (my brother and sister in law) living in my house this week has been an interesting endeavor. Not that it was bad or anything! It’s just that…they’re teenagers. So they sleep in a lot later than I do. So a lot of tip toeing around the house happened in the mornings. πŸ˜‚

Especially the early mornings when I had to get up at 5 am if I wanted to run before it got too terribly hot out. There were a few of those days. I sure hate having to wake up that early, but I always regret it when I don’t. The sun is not my friend in the summer…

Not gonna lie, I legit have a countdown on my phone for the Autumn Equinox and the first day of October. My body is ready!!! πŸŽƒπŸ‚

  • 4 easy miles

I’d say I’m just trying to get back into the swing of things, but the swing of things has still been a little bit off this week, obviously! πŸ˜‰ So really I’m just trying to squeeze it in when I can.

So on Monday I was up at 5 am to get my run done! I’m not a fan of having to wake up that early, but at least I was treated to a nice sunrise. After my run I had to take care of a bunch of stuff around the house before my sister in laws got here. One of them left after a few minutes. She still had about a 5 hour drive to St. Louis. But obviously the other one stayed here with us. 😊 She and I, plus her brother spent the rest of the day hanging out and kinda picking on each other. Because what else are siblings supposed to do?? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  • 2 treadmill miles
  • 20 minutes of yoga

Hahaha oh boy, I was tired from my early wake up and then later bedtime on Monday, so I ended up sleeping in till 8 on Tuesday. That’s definitely not a great thing to do in the summer. When I woke up the sun was out and it was HOT. So I decided I was going to do my run on the treadmill instead. I’m a huge wimp when it comes to the heat. πŸ₯΅πŸ€£

So I had to waited until about 11 to do this 2 mile run. My brother in law has been sleeping on an air up mattress in our spare bedroom, which is really our “exercise room” because that’s where my treadmill, stationary bike, yoga mats, foam rollers, and running shoes now reside. But yet again the problem with teenagers is they like to sleep in late. And I get it. I was a teenager once too. But I’m a morning runner and an inpatient person so I git tired of waiting. So I ended up running outside anyway. πŸ˜‚

Oh man that was miserable! I wanted to do a little bit of speed work today but that wasn’t going to happen in the mid-morning heat! So I just did two slow miles. Hahaha but that’s better than nothing! Afterwards I enjoyed some nice, cold watermelon, because literally nothing is better after a hot run. πŸ‰πŸ˜‹

  • 5 miles
  • 30 minutes on the stationary bike

77 degrees. 94% humidity. At least that’s what the weather was like when I started my run on Wednesday morning at 5:30 I’m the morning.

Not exactly fun times, but I got it done!! Doing my very best to get back on track after 3 not so great running weeks. So far so good! 😊 Even though getting back into it is hard as hell and kinda hurts. πŸ˜‚ But I also know that it won’t be that way for long and that definitely helps!

  • Rest day

My legs were starting to feel HEAVY by Wednesday! πŸ˜‚ So a rest day definitely felt good on Thursday!

Hahaha originally I wanted it to be a cross training day, but I was tired so πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

  • Zoo day

So Friday didn’t end up going as I had planned, but it was a fun day! Luke kinda decided at the last minute that he wanted to take his brother and sister to the Kansas City Zoo and art museum so that’s what we did!

It was a long, hot day, but still lots of fun. You can read more about it here if you’re interested! 😁

  • 7 miles on the treadmill

So this was a weird run. Actually it just felt like a weird day in general! πŸ˜‚

So usually I run in the morning, but I woke up late on Saturday (our zoo adventures kinda sapped everyone’s energy, I think!) and decided I was going to run on the treadmill. But I had to wait until 1:20 pm when my brother in law finally woke up because he’s been sleeping on an air mattress in our spare bedroom, which is where my treadmill is. So that was all just weird.

Then about 4 miles into my run my dad called me and we talked for about an hour. But since I couldn’t really hear with the treadmill going I had to stop. So yeah, my 7 miles weren’t exactly consecutive. But at least I finished them after I got off of the phone with my dad. πŸ˜‚

Then I did some stretching, showered, ate, and all of a sudden it was 4 pm but it felt like it should have only be 11 am (because I usually do all of this in the morning) and my whole perception of time was off for the rest of the day. But at least I got 7 miles done. πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚

  • Rest day

Happy anniversary to us!

7 years married. 11 years (almost πŸ˜‰) together. And 13 years of knowing each other. We’re still the coolest people I know. πŸ˜ŽπŸ–€πŸ˜‚

Total Weekly Mileage: 18

Not exactly what I’ve been aiming for, but after everything we’ve had going on I’ll definitely take it!! 😊

My sister in law left today, and while I really enjoyed having another girl around here, that’s one less person I have to worry about which means I’ll have a little more time on my hands next week. πŸ˜‰ So maybe I’ll be able to squeeze in a few more miles. But I am happy with what I was able to get done this week. πŸ˜„

Happy Sunday! I hope you had a great week!

Zoo Day

Fact: literally everything in St. Louis is better than anything in Kansas City.

Hahaha I’m only a little biased considering I’m originally from the STL area, but it’s still true. πŸ˜‰

View from Busch Stadium, October 2014

But since we’ve been living in the Kansas City area for almost 7 years now, we’ve learned to get by. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

Yesterday Luke wanted to take his brother and sister into KC yesterday to kinda show them around and do some stuff. Especially since his sister is leaving tomorrow and then his brother is going back home next week. So we went to the Kansas City Zoo and then the art museum.

Not gonna lie, growing up near St. Louis, which has one of the best zoos in the United States, might have ruined most other zoos for me and probably anyone else who ever got to go there on the regular for school field trips, birthday parties, or just on a regular weekend with your family. The St. Louis Zoo is AMAZING!

The Kansas City Zoo is, well… not so much. They don’t have nearly the amount of animals and there is a ridiculous amount of walking that you have to do that contains absolutely no exhibits. That’s no fun. Plus, the STL Zoo is free! Sure, the zoo parking costs like $20, but you can park anywhere else is Forest Park for free, which we always did. The KC Zoo is $16 a head. Which just makes me feel even worse about their whole situation. πŸ˜‚

Hahaha so I know I’ve complained a lot, but we did have a pretty decent day yesterday. I’ve just always got to tell people how much better the STL Zoo is compared to the KC zoo.

Anyway, we woke up at 7 am yesterday so we could get everyone ready and get to the zoo relatively early. It opens at 8 am and we got there a little before 9 which worked out pretty well because we got into the zoo super fast since there was no line! Nice!!

One of the first exhibits you see entering into the KC zoo are the sea otters! I love them! They are just so cute!! This one was swimming all around and playing with it’s pink dish which was fun to watch!

The next exhibit and probably one of the most popular is the Polar Bear habitat, but he wasn’t out at that point, so we continued onto see some monkeys, birds, the orangutans, and orange panda, and the tigers.

After walking around for a while and seeing all of those animals we stopped in the little kiddy area to feed the goats! None of us cared that that was a little kid thing, we all had fun petting and feeding the goats!

And Obviously the goats knew where the little food dispensers were, so the bigger ones would climb up on the fence and get as close as possible to it while you collected the goat treats. It was pretty funny!

We moved on from the goats to the “Discovery Barn”. Another little kid area, but there are tortoise, meerkats, and Macaw parrots there and we wanted to see them. πŸ˜‰ After we did we went to pet some stingrays! That’s always fun! Plus getting to stick your hand in cool water was super nice! Especially since it was starting to get pretty hot at that point.

After the stingrays we moved on the the penguins. One of our all time favorites! And also probably the second biggest attraction at the KC zoo. And I do have to admit that their penguin exhibit is pretty cool! It’s two different levels so you can see the penguins on “land” but then you can also watch them dive into and swim through the water. And a lot of times it looks like they’re swimming right above you which is awesome!

Plus this building is super cold (I mean, it kinda has to be) so it’s a nice place to stop and take a break from the heat.

After the penguins we moved onto “Africa”. Now this is the part of the zoo that has the ridiculously long walk with no animals. You even have to cross over a bridge that goes over a river and train tracks. Hahaha every time we do this Luke and I end up complaining about how poorly this zoo is set up. πŸ˜‚ And I mean, you can take a tram over this part, but we already paid $16 dollars to get in, plus a ridiculous amount of money for food and drinks, plus we wanted to ride the ski lift thing, so we’re just not about that tram life. πŸ˜‚

At this point is when we got to see the elephants which I was super excited about! Elephants are definitely one of my favorites! They are such intelligent, amazing, beautiful creatures! Plus if what that rumor circulating the internet is true, elephants think we’re cute (the same part of their brain lights up when the see us as the part of our braid does when it sees cute puppies or something like that, supposedly). And I just think that’s awesome!

After the elephants we road the sky tram thing. Basically it’s just a ski lift that goes over the ostriches, zebras, giraffes, and other herd animals so you can see them from above. I don’t have any pictures from that because I was terrified of dropping my phone. πŸ˜‚ But my sister in law and I road it together and we had a lot of fun! πŸ˜ƒ

Once we got off of the sky tram we walked aback around so we could get an on the ground view of all of the animals we saw from above.

And then yet again we made it to another portion of the zoo that had a ridiculous amount of walking with no animals in it. Boring…Hahaha we also spent $20 on a very small amount of snacks. That was a little bit depressing.

But we ate and drank as we walked. By this point the 4 of us were hot and tired, but we wanted to see the gorillas before we left and we actually got really lucky because two of them were right up near the glass of the viewing area.

This guy was just hanging out and watching all of the people eating him. 🦍

Then we got really lucky again and got to see the leopard walking across the part of his habitat that goes over the waking path. That was super neat!! Luke and I have been to this zoo quite a few time actually, but this was the first time we ever got to see that!

Like I said, at this point we were all hot and tired so we started making our way to the exit. After the ridiculously long walk back from “Africa”, over the bridge with no animals we were all a little bit miserable. So we stopped at the penguin exhibit again so we could cool off in the air conditioning a little bit. Then when we left there we found a snow-cone truck and we all absolutely NEEDED a snow-cone, so we spent another $20 on 4 small snow-cones. That was a little bit ridiculous, but I wasn’t kidding when I said we needed them. We ate them while we walked out of the zoo and to the truck and we all perked up quite a bit after getting some icy, sugary goodness into us. πŸ˜‚

That was probably the perfect way to wrap up our zoo trip.

It was around 12:30 pm that we left the zoo, so we went from there to the art museum.

We walked in, went to look at all of the paintings, and then Luke and his brother ran off because they are boring and don’t enjoy art. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‰ So my sister in law and I took our time looking at everything. She particularly liked the paintings since she’s a painter herself. I loved the Egyptian and Greek art. They have some pretty cool sculptures there. Plus a real mummy!! I also like all of the pottery stuff they have. I particularly like all of the teapots. 😁

So we went around the whole museum and apparently while we did that so did Luke and his brother. Ironically they ended up going through the whole museum as well and did actually look at the art while also looking for us. It was pretty funny actually. And once my sister in law and I finally spotted them the tried to get away again. But I took off running across the museum lobby because I don’t give a single fuck and I caught them. I got some weird looks from all of the fancy, sophisticated people there. It was hilarious. πŸ˜‚

That was the end of our art museum adventure though, Which was probably a good thing. I don’t think the security people were too fond of us at that point, considering I sprinted across their lobby. Hahaha plus my sister in law and I got yelled at for standing too close to a Van Gogh painting. We weren’t touching! Just admiring! But apparently you can only get so close to the art. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Our day of adventuring ended at a Panera at around 3:30 that afternoon for a super later/early lunch/dinner. We were STARVING after waking around the zoo and only eating snacks. So it was basically the best meal we’d ever had. πŸ˜‚

Then we drove back home and just kinda hung out for the rest of the evening. My sister in law showed me a bunch of her art on her phone and I showed her some of my photography stuff from back in the day. It was a nice evening after a fun but long day. 😊

So, I didn’t get a run in yesterday, but after all of the waking at the zoo I did go a little over my step goal, so I mean, I’ll take it! Hahaha at the very least walking around in the hot sun was definitely something! πŸ˜‚ But I have been doing better at actually squeezing runs in this week compared to the 3 previous weeks, so I am making some progress on that front! We’ve definitely had a fun and eventful summer, but I’m ready to get back to that running grind! And I’m definitely getting there! πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜„

Anyway, I just wanted to share the fun day we had yesterday. Even though the St. Louis Zoo is better than the Kansas City Zoo. πŸ˜‰

Happy Saturday!

There Ain’t No Cure For The Summertime Blues

Hahaha I don’t actually have the summertime blues! I just couldn’t think of a title for this post and it seemed almost fitting. πŸ˜‰ We’ve been super busy here lately!! And unfortunately the past three-ish weeks have just not been good for me running-wise.

Between summer weather finally hitting us HARD (it was actually relatively mild up until the last week of June), a weird little niggle in my hip (which is gone now, thankfully!), one of my brother in laws staying with us (which isn’t a bad thing! I’m just a very routine oriented person and being out of my usual routine is a little difficult for me), preparing for and then celebrating Independence Day and Luke’s birthday, lots of treats and yummy, greasy, comfort/party food, alcohol consumption, and getting less sleep than usual, running has just kinda fallen to the back burner.

But I mean, these strawberry margaritas were definitely worth it. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚

I’m definitely not super stoked about that, but sometimes life happens and you’ve just gotta roll with it. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ And I’ve definitely been rolling with it! πŸ˜‚

But this week I really want to buckle down and get some shit done! There hasn’t been enough suffering in my life lately and boy do I miss it!! (Hahaha my fellow runners know what I’m talking about! πŸ˜‰). And obviously I’ve just missed running in general, even though I have been doing some! It’s just not been enough.

I’ve still got a few more interesting weeks ahead of me before things calm down around here though! Later today two of my sister in laws will be arriving here and then the younger one will be staying with us for the week along with her brother. Not gonna lie, I have no idea what I’m going to do with two teenagers in my house! My brother in law is pretty chill and we get along fine. But like a lot of brothers and sisters, these two don’t exactly get along great all of the time. I’m sure we’ll all be fine! It’s just going to be an interesting week! πŸ˜‚

We didn’t have a flag, so on the 4th we played the national anthem and all faced my brother in law’s shorts. πŸ˜‚

Then next weekend Luke and I are driving to Illinois to visit some other family (this will be after my brother and sister and law will be back home in Minnesota). Obviously that will be more fun, but I can never seem to fit in any running while we’re there. Not a big deal, at the very least I know it’s coming so I’ll be able to fit in my long run (which is the run I’m always the most worried about missing) in earlier that week.

So anyways, that’s what’s been going on with me! Lots of fun, but very little running. Hahaha I really need to get my ass back into gear though! Half marathon training officially (because I already feel like I’ve been training πŸ˜‰) starts this month and I am PUMPED! I’m going to be trying to tackle two half marathons in two days again this year (it didn’t end up happening last year, bummer). And this year my dad will be joining me for BOTH half’s!

Hahaha he’s going to have to get his ass into gear as well! He hasn’t been doing much running lately. He has been mountain biking quite a bit though, but obviously that’s not the same thing. Either way, I don’t think a time goal is going to be in place for either of these half’s for that very reason. But either way, we’ll still have fun!

Hahahaha I stole this photo from his Instagram without asking. But I’m pretty sure he won’t care. πŸ˜‰

But speaking of Operation Two Half Marathons In Two Days: Take Two, I finally got around to hanging up some fliers with my ambassador discount code on them!

I’ve had my fliers for a while now, but I’ve been slacking a little bit. πŸ˜‚ But now I’ve got some hung up in several of the break rooms at the office Luke works at, the break room of the warehouse one of my brother in laws works at, a Panera, a dog park, and several on the Indian Creek Trail in Overland Park, KS! Yay!!

I’ve still got plenty more to hang up though. I need to hang some up around my town as well! I know there are several runners around here who also like to do local races (hahaha I’ve heard their names and the city their from announced at some of the local races I’ve been to!).

In full disclosure, if I get 5 people to use my code I get to do the half marathon for free! And obviously I’d love that! So far I know I’ve got two people registered with it. Possibly even all 5 already. One of my local Instagram friends posted a photo of one of my fliers on her running groups Facebook page and she said at least 4 people want to register for this race as a prep race for a marathon they’re trying for! So hopefully they do! Hahaha that would work out pretty well for several people, I think. Myself included obviously. πŸ˜‰

But more importantly, I’ve got training that I need to get done! And I’m definitely ready to get back to work! Getting back into it is probably going to suck pretty hard considering the general lack of any substance the small amount of running these last three weeks have had. But I feel very eager to get back to it, so bring it on!!

Anyway, that’s what’s going on with me right now!

I did wake up early (5 am. Ew. 🀒) and got 4 miles done this morning! So I’m off to a good start! Now I’ve got some stuff to do before my sister in laws get here this afternoon!

Happy Monday! I hope you have a fantastic week!
