What I Ate Wednesday: 4/26/17

Surprisingly enough, I actually ate pretty well on Monday, considered I went to a live event at the Sprint Center, and obviously those are always full of all sorts of delicious snacks. I mean, I did eat a cookie, a piece of a pretzel, and drank half of a 20 ounce beer, but all things considered that’s really not bad! Especially since I are pretty clean leading up to said event.

Making good food choices tends to be my biggest downfall when it comes to eating well. Especially when I’m out and about doing stuff, so I’m quite proud of how I did on Monday. πŸ™‚

And I ate pretty well yesterday too! I had coffee for breakfast (I’m currently going through a “I don’t like eating breakfast” phase), a bunch of roasted veggies with some turkey sausage for lunch, and French toast for dinner (I have recently learned that as long as you use whole wheat bread and don’t completely drench it in syrup, French toast isn’t all that bad!). And for snacks I had a nature valley granola bar and a bunch of grapes.

So I’ve definitely had a drawn out, rocky start getting back on the clean eating wagon, but these last few days have definitely proven to me that I can in fact do it!

With that being said, let’s take a closer look at what I ate today. πŸ™‚

Breakfast: 303 calories 

  • Coffee with 1/2 cup vanilla soy milk, 2 tbs honey, and 1 tbs coconut oil

I know the concept of adding coconut oil to coffee can sound kind of weird, especially if you’ve never done it before, but it’s actually really really good! Like I mentioned before, I’m currently going through a phase in which I do not like to eat breakfast, but I gotta have my morning caffeine fix. πŸ˜‰ So I’ve been kind of making a meal out of it. At the very least it’s got plenty of calories to fuel my workouts, and the coconut oil actually helps keep me full for quite a while, so it’s been working for me. πŸ™‚

After my “breakfast” I went for a short run, did a little bit of yoga, and then showered. I still felt pretty good and really didn’t start to feel hungry until around 10:30 am. At that point a snack just didn’t sound like it was going to cut it though, so I actually started making my lunch. I know that’s like, crazy early for lunch, but I had to cook rice and defrost ground beef, so I didn’t end up eating until around 11:20 am. So that’s a little bit more acceptable lunch time haha.

Lunch: 715 calories 

  • 1 cup cooked white rice, about 4 ounces of ground beef seasoned with taco seasoning, 1/4 cup guacamole, and about 5 yellow cherry tomatoes.
  • A mug of mint tea

Snack: 410 calories

  • 1 nature valley granola bar
  • 2 cups of grapes

Plot twist; I actually ended up doing my threshold run this afternoon and PRing my mile time. πŸ™‚ I wasn’t expecting to do either of those things today, but hey, I’ll take it! Haha my legs are feeling a little bit shot now, but it would appear that I am getting to be a little bit faster, and sore legs are totally worth that!

Dinner: 600 calories 

  • Chicken breast with a little bit of olive oil, salt, pepper, and chili powder
  • A glass of wine because I totally earned it today! 

Yeah I kinda scarfed it down before I could take a picture of it haha. 

Snack: 190 calories 

  • Another nature valley granola bar

Calories burned: 906

 (Well, according to my Garmin Forerunner 235 anyway. But it does have a HR monitor that is constantly tracking my HR, so I adujme it has to be relatively accurate)

Net calories: 1,309

So yeah, I’ve tracking calories again. Mostly because I really want to lose some weight before our Florida trip and I wasn’t really losing anything while I was eating intuitively. I didn’t gain anything though, so that’s good, but still I think losing a little bit of weight would be a healthy thing for me. I also think my running would improve a little bit if I wasn’t carrying some extra weight.

So this time around, instead of focusing solely on calories like I have in the past, I’ve been trying to focus more on nutrients and eating “clean”. So far it’s been working pretty well. πŸ™‚ I weighed in at 157.5 pounds this morning, which is about a pound more than I was last time I weighed in, but I’m kinda sore from my workout yesterday (which means my muscles are full of lactic acid and probably retaining a little bit of water), so I think that’s what that was all about. But even if it’s not, I’m still down about 3 pounds overall, so I’m pretty happy about that. πŸ™‚

What I Ate Wednesday: 4/12/15

Fucking Finn decided to wake up at 4:30 in the morning…and then proceed to whine and cry until 6. He didn’t want to eat or drink or go outside. He just wanted to get up and for everyone else to be up with him. Around 6:30 I finally got him to quit being needy and go outside and play with Dean while I made and ate breakfast, and then around 8 am he came back inside and all he wanted to do was cuddle and sleep. Little bastard.

On top of Finn waking everyone up super early, I spent most of the night tossing and turning so that really sucks. I tend to over eat and eat a bunch of junk the day after a not so great night’s sleep. And unfortunately that tends to happen to me a lot. For the most part, if I can fall asleep I’m usually good (although that’s not always true), but falling asleep tends to be really hard for me. Both of my sisters have the same problem and I think my mom does too, so maybe its a genetic thing. Does anyone have any tips on how to make falling asleep easier that doesn’t involve medication? I’ve tried melatonin supplements before but they didn’t really do much for me. Chamomile tea definitely helps me relax, but it’s never really helped me sleep. Same with pretty much every “bed time yoga” video there is on YouTube. It just really sucks that something so necessary and important is so hard to accomplish.

Anyways, I figured a “what I ate Wednesday” post would be a good idea. At the very least it helped me stay accountable and not go completely off the wall with my eating just because I’m tired.

Breakfast:

  • french toast (2 slices of whole wheat bread, 1 egg, 1/4 cup soy milk, 1/4 cup brown sugar, and some cinnamon, fried in 1 tbs coconut oil)
  • black coffee

I figured a little treat was in order for this morning, so I made myself some french toast. All things considered though, french toast really isn’t all that bad. I mean, obviously mine had a good amount of sugar in it, but it had a little bit of protein, whole grains, and healthy fats, so all in all, not a bad way to start the day!

Lunch:

  • tri colored rotini with tomato/basil/garlic pasta sauce

I probably should have added some veggies to that, but I didn’t so whatever.

After lunch I walked all 3 dogs then spent 25 minutes on my stationary bike. According to my training scheduled, I was supposed to cross train for an hour but I got super bored around 23 minutes so I quit at 25 haha. Oh well, at least I crossed trained for a little bit. πŸ™‚

Snack:

  • fresh pineapple
  • A nature valley oats and honey bar

  • protein shake (1 frozen banana, scoop chocolate protein powder, 1 cup vanilla soy milk)

I kinda forgot how good a nice cold protein shake could be on a warm day. Honestly a smoothie would have been better, but aside from frozen bananas I don’t have any smoothie fixing. So I guess that’s just going to have to wait for my next grocery trip. 

I am literally the world’s worst selfier. πŸ˜‚

I suppose all in all that’s not too bad for a day of eating! As usual eating enough vegetables is my biggest downfall. But veggies are just no fun! I’d rather eat fruit or French toast haha. Oh well, at least I didn’t eat a bunch of junk or anything. πŸ˜ƒ
 

 

What I Ate Wednesday: 3/15/17

I’ve been doing a lot better food-wise since my last “What I Ate Wednesday” post. I did have a bunch of pizza and a few beers one night, but other than that things have been pretty good! I’ve even lost 2 pounds! Not bad, if you ask me. πŸ™‚ I’m definitely headed in the right direction in setting healthier eating habits.

Breakfast:

  • Sausage/egg sandwich (breakfast sausage and 1 scrambled egg on 2 slices of whole wheat bread).
  • Coffee with 1/2 cup soy milk, 2 tbs honey, and 1 tbs coconut oil.

Post-run/Pre-strength workout snack:

  • 1 chocolate Honey Stinger Waffle

This was my last chocolate flavored waffle. Sad face. Oh well, I still have a bunch of honey flavored waffles, and those are really good too! πŸ™‚

Lunch:

  • Cabbage and cauliflower roasted with 1 tbs olive oil, and some chicken.

Afternoon Snack:

  • Peanut butter/honey sandwich (2 tbs peanut butter and 1 tbs honey on 2 slices of whole wheat bread).

Dinner:

  • 1 cup of plain Cheerios with 1/2 cup plain greek yogurt, 1 tbs chia seeds, and 1 tbs honey.

Ok, but yogurt mixed with cereal is sooo good!!

Evening Snack:

  • Another cup of Cheerios 
  • A couple of clementines 

I don’t have a picture of either, but whatever. πŸ˜‰

Ok so I eat a lot of honey haha. But I have a horrible sweet tooth, and I figure honey is a much better alternative to excessive amounts of sugar, or high fructose corn syrup, or any of those artificial sweeteners. I mean, at least it’s good for you. Plus I usually get raw, local honey (the stuff I currently have is local, but not raw unfortunately), so at the very very least I’m helping to support my local bee keepers! And I’m seriously all about that life! I keep telling Luke we need to plant all sort of bee friendly flowers in our landscaping, but we just haven’t gotten around to it yet..Anyway, all in all I’d say I made some good choices today. πŸ™‚

So like 5 minutes after I typed the sentence about us not getting around to planting bee friendly plants in our landscaping, my mother in law sent me a message on Facebook about the neat thing Cheerios is currently doing. They are giving away  wildflower seed packets for free (seriously, they are 100% free, I didn’t even have to pay for shipping)! So I officially don’t have an excuse to not have bee friendly flowers in my garden anymore. I love bees and I love Cheerios, so I’m so freaking stoked about this right now! Go get your free seed packet here and help #bringbackthebees! 🐝


 

What I Ate Wednesday: 3/8/2017

I haven’t really talked about food for a while. Kinda crazy, considering food is one of my favorite things ever, and not too long ago I was talking all about how I was going eat more clean and be more accountable with myself, and stuff like that.

As far as clean eating goes, well, I’m not doing terrible. I haven’t exactly been doing great with it either though. Like, I just haven’t been making very good decisions with food, but that’s usually my problem. That and lack of self control…but I’m not going to get into that right now. Anyway, Luke’s been hardcore overhauling his diet, so I figure now would be a good time for me to do the same!  Especially since we have that Florida vacation coming up. I want to be able to wear a swim suit and hang out on the beach without feeling like a fat tub of lard.

So here’s the accountability part of all of that! It’s a lot easier to make good food decisions when you know you’re going to post what you ate on the internet, for all the world to see. πŸ˜‰

Breakfast:

  • Coffee with 1/2 cup vanilla soy milk, 1 tbs coconut oil, and 2 tbs honey.
  • 1 hard boiled egg, 1 banana, and 1 clementine.

I swear putting coconut oil into coffee is actually really really tasty! Also, I’m way to lazy to actually make a half decent breakfast. Haha at least I got some protein, fat, and carbs first thing in the morning. πŸ™‚

See this shit right here (well below)? This is literally crack. It’s basically chocolate bark with pretzels, M&Ms, and graham crackers. So. Freaking. Delicious.

Not a very good food choice on my part though. But I was having a really bad day and I wouldn’t shut up about it. So I guess Luke thought some chocolate would help, and picked me up this glorious treat on his way home from work. He was totally right, the chocolate did make me feel better, well, except for the fact that I ate the whole container and got a stomachache, but whatever. Totally worth it!

So yeah, this wasn’t exactly a great day of eating, I definitely need to reign it in a little if I want to lose a little bit of weight before the Florida trip happens, but it also wasn’t a disastrous day. Lots of plants were had, which is really good! And a good amount of healthy fats with the olive and coconut oils. I definitely need to work on my protein intake though. I can never seem to get enough of that in. I also need to learn to control my sweet tooth just a little bit. Obviously chocolate for dinner was a bad idea, but other than that, I’m thinking I did alright. I know what I need to work on and I feel like I’m definitely headed back in the right direction with my food choices. πŸ™‚

 

Operation Florida Is Offically A-Go

Luke’s mom has officially rented a 1.2 million dollar house for our trip to Florida in July. Yeah let me repeat that, Luke’s mom rented a 1.2 MILLION DOLLAR HOUSE for our vacation this summer. It’s got like 6 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms (I don’t remember exactly, but it’s close to that), a 40 foot pool in a screened in patio, and all sorts of other neat stuff. How freaking crazy is that?!?Β Oh and the rent is like, $350 a night and there are all sorts of weird rules and a crazy home owner’s association, because along with other rentals, people actually live in the subdivision (ew I hate subdivisions) that this house is in. Since these are million dollar homes and some of them are lake front property, I can only assume that most of the people who live there are doctors, lawyers, CEO’s, and a bunch of them are probably older. That would definitely explain all the crazy rules and home owners association.

I feel like all the of the doctors, lawyers, and CEO people aren’t going to like us very much haha. We’re going to be one big ass group of people, all originally from the Midwest, all from working class families, with a little bit of ghetto and a little bit of redneck/hick-ness all mixed. Yeah they are definitely going to hate us and it’s going to be so much fun!

And I suppose it’s a good thing we are going to be in a subdivision surrounded by other vacationers and rich people. I looked up this house on google maps and it looks like I’ll be able to run around the area without any problems, so that’s one thing I wont have to worry about. There’s also a lake within walking distance, and where there are lakes there are usually walking paths. Not sure how willing I am to run super close to a lake that’s probably filled with alligators though haha.

So, if anything this whole Florida trip has given me motivation to start eating better. I still haven’t managed to reign that in ever since I stopped counting calories. I’m not exactly saying that I want to lose some weight (even though I really do), but what I really want is to be able to feel confident enough to wear a swimming suit while we’re in Florida. I actually really love swimming, but last year I only went once because I felt like I looked fat and gross in a swimming suit. Whether that was actually true or not isn’t exactly the point though. I just want to be able to hang out in the pool or go to the beach this summer and not be constantly worrying about how I look or comparing myself to all of the other girls there. Yeah, chaining that mindset isn’t going to be hard at all…But I feel like it’s all going to start with what I’m eating, so that’s what I spent a lot of time focusing on today.

I’m actually kind of glad that I had something to really start working on today, as it was a rest day and those can get kinda boring. Plus it’s a lot easier to start eating a little better when you can’t justify eating 6 oreos because you ran 6 miles that day (because obviously it only makes sense to eat one oreo per mile you ran. Duh!). That’s another thing, Luke and I didn’t even buy those oreos that I totally ate more than 6 of yesterday! My brother in law did. It seems like every few days he brings home some kind of junk food specifically for me. One day it was a bag of mini twix bars, then a package of oreos, then yesterday it was a little bag of brownie brittle. I’m not entirely sure what his angle is, but I really wish he’d stop because I have no self control. I even told him that I did’t want to eat junk food anymore, but when he brought me the brownie brittle he said “I know you don’t want any more junk food, but I know you like brownie brittle so I got you some”. Whatever though, if he keeps doing this I’m just going to start throwing it all away. I mean, I already told him I don’t want it, and he wont eat anything he specifically bought for someone else, so that seems like the best course of action to me. Don’t get me wrong, I really hate the idea of wasting food like that, but when you really think about it, oreos barely count as food anyway.

I didn’t eat super clean today or anything, but I did make a point to include more plants into my meals. I had a humus sandwich for breakfast (I can’t be the only person who loves nothing but humus on whole wheat toast!) and a cup of coffee with soy milk and sugar (I’m out of honey sad face). Lunch was a sweet potato, sliced and roasted with some olive oil along with some ground beef, seasoned with taco seasoning. Later in the afternoon I had a snack of whole wheat crackers and a glass of orange juice with some chia seeds mixed in. For dinner I made pasta, it had a little bit of pasta sauce and a decent amount of sauteed zucchini, cauliflower,and onions in it. Yum!! It wasn’t exactly the best day of eating, but I adding more plants into my usual diet is definitely a good place to start!

As for what I did today well, I rested and re hydrated. I definitely didn’t drink enough water yesterday and I was totally feeling it today. Actually, I don’t think I’ve been drinking enough water in general as of late. I guess that’s just one more thing I need to work on. Anyway, I finished the book Shoe Dog, worked on a few blog posts, and other than taking the dogs for a quick walk I hardly left the couch at all today. I think that was a little bit warranted though. Every once in a while everyone needs a day spent sitting around doing nothing. At least I think so. Plus at the very least I feel like I at least did something productive by doing a bit of writing.

Oh and I finally got around to updating my Goals and PR’s page! I’m only about a month late with coming up with goals for the year, but whatever. πŸ˜‰ I don’t have any time goals for this year anyway. Obviously I won’t mind if I can run certain distances a little faster, but my main goal is to hardcore up my mileage and run 1,000 miles this year! That’s a pretty big jump considering I only ranΒ 567.03 miles last year, but I think as long as I really make a point to hit my weekly and monthly mileage goals I can at the very least get close to 1,000 miles. I’m definitely aiming to hit 1,000 miles right on the head though, so we’re just going to have to wait and see how that goes! So far I’m falling just a little bit behind, but as long as I get back on track and make up those 11 miles that I didn’t do last month I should be good!

On a super duper unrelated note (but lets be real here, when have I ever been able to keep a blog post on a single subject? That’s just not my jam), my sister just started her own website! How super neat-o is that? You should totally go check it out! She doesn’t have a lot going on there yet, but I’m sure she’ll be posting about all sorts of fun adventures that she has with our other sister. Plus all the links to her social media sites are on there and if you’re into adorable animals you’ll want to check those out! You may even see a few guest appearances of some of my critters. πŸ˜‰

Jeez I’ve just been in a super ramble-y mood lately. I’m sorry if I’m being super boring with these long posts about life, upcoming events, and whatnot. That’s just all I’ve got to talk about at the moment. At the very least I’m not currently in super crazy Green Day fangirl mode. But be warned, it’s coming. The closer we get to August the more I’m going to start freaking out about seeing them in concert again. Remember that post that started off with me “Jumping up and down wildly while screamingΒ incoherently”? That for real happened. I, a 25 year old “adult” momentarily reverted back to being a 15 year old girl again after purchasing Green Day tickets. Probably not one of my finer moments, but hey, it happens. πŸ˜‰

Motivation Monday, Weekend Indulgences, Back To The Grind, And What I Ate In A Day

I guess it’s kinda late in the day to be sharing Motivation Monday stuff, but this is one of my all time favorite quotes and every time I see it I want to share it haha.

Being a very slow runner myself, I’ve often felt like I wasn’t a “real” runner. So I guess it’s just nice to be reminded that us slow runners work just as hard and are just as legit as the faster runners. And the fact that the mayor of running himself said that there are no fake runners means it has to be true! πŸ˜‰

Anyway, I’ve been enjoying this whole not calorie counting thing! Although I went a little crazy with food over the weekend. That’s not really surprising though, I tend to do that whenever I stop counting. I suppose after restricting what I eat for so long that’s bound to happen. Saturday wasn’t all that bad, but yesterday my brother in law made a bunch of food for the Royal Rumble payperview last night, and I went waaay overboard. Not a big deal though, I figured it was going to happen and I’ve reined it in today.

All of the heavy food I ate made my run this morning a little but uncomfortable. And I guess my huge breakfast didn’t help either haha. But French toast just sounded sooo good. I added some cocoa powder into the egg/milk mixture and topped it with banana slices and some table syrup. Mmmm it was amazing! And of course I needed a big cup of coffee to go with my breakfast. πŸ˜„

Yeah, after all of that I had to wait two hours (instead of my usual one) before I could run, and I still felt a little too full. So my stomach wasn’t exactly happy during my run, but everything else was! After upping my protein intake and taking two rest days in a row my legs felt soooo much better. I only did two easy miles though. But that’s what I had scheduled, and if Ifollow what I have planned for this week I should hit 25 miles. So as of right now I’m back to my usual schedule, but we’ll just have to wait and see how that goes. πŸ™‚

After my run, I did 30 minutes of yoga sculpt. Oh man, I never knew how intense yoga could really be! It was fun though, I really liked the instructor in the video and the music was really nice too. One of these days I’m going to have to go to an actual yoga class, but for now I’m quite happy with how my at home practice is going.

After my workout I took a quick shower and then made THE BEST lunch ever. It was a bowl of rice, some garbanzo beans, mashed avocado, ground beef seasoned with taco seasoning, and a little bit of sour cream. So. Freaking. Good. Oh and not pictured; two fun sized twix bars, because chocolate. πŸ™‚

Once I finished my delicious lunch, I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to reduce the amount of dog hair in my house. Since the weather’s been pretty warm Lily has already started shedding her winter coat. And my brother in law’s dog sheds two dogs worth of fur every day. It’s super annoying…I also did a bunch of other chores. Super boring stuff.  But the one thing I didn’t do today but totally should have was check the mail. Luke did when he got home though, and it turns out my Green Day tickets got here today!!!πŸ˜±πŸ˜­πŸ˜„

Yeah, I’m just a little bit excited.


I definitely wasn’t expecting that! The website said that tickets usually don’t get printed until 21 days before the show. Not that I’m complaining or anything. πŸ˜‰

I got a little lazy for dinner. I didn’t feel like actually cooking, so I ended up having a peanut butter and banana sandwich, some whole wheat crackers, and a couple more fun sized Twix bars. Haha this is exactly why I don’t usually keep junk food in the house. I literally have no self control. 

Anyway, I guess having a little bit of protein with each meal really helped, because I didn’t feel like doing the constant snacking that I tend to do in the evenings. I’m having a cup of tea right now and I’m totally good! 

So I guess all in all, I kinda ate a lot of bread and sugar today. But I don’t think it’s a bad place to start, especially after all of the over indulging I did over the weekend.

A Rest Day? On Saturday?!

What kind of madness is this?!? Saturday is my long run day and long runs are the most important workout of the week, right?!

Well, I sure tend to think so if you’re training for a half or full marathon. But as I’m not currently training for anything, I figured skipping one long run won’t do me any harm. Don’t get me wrong, I still felt a little weird not following my usual schedule, but I also felt pretty darn great because a rest day was super necessary for a few reasons.

First and foremost, my sleeping scheduled has changed! Last weekend I started getting up at 5:45 in the morning with Luke. Usually I get up around 7-7:30, so I’m missing out on about an hour to an hour and a half of sleep that I’d normally get. Who would have thought an hour of sleep would make such a big difference! I feel like that’s definitely a big contributor as to why I haven’t felt like I’ve actually recovered from any of my workouts this week, but I know that the lack of protein (and probably iron) in my diet isn’t helping this whole situation. I’m kind of terrible about eating enough protein, I’m all about that carb life! Especially during certain times of the month. Like when I’m on my period the thought of eating meat, beans, and or even a protein shake makes me want to barf. Which is why I’m thinking along with protein, I could use some iron. I can’t remember the last time I had red meat, which is definitely not a good thing. I tend to feel a little better around this time of the month if I eat a little bit of red meat. And I know there are a lot of non meat sources of protein/iron out there and vegetarians/vegans are probably going to hate me for this, but I really couldn’t survive on a diet without animal protein. Whenever I go long periods of time without it I really start feeling like crap and can’t seem to recover from my workouts.

Anyways, so instead attempting to run 8 or 9 miles, I decided to catch up on my sleep a little bit. I still woke up at 5:45 this morning, but I ended up going back to bed around 6 and then sleeping until about 7:40. Then I ate breakfast and had a big cup of coffee without feeling like I needed to rush so I could get dressed and out the door to get a run done. It was great. πŸ™‚

I ended up being really glad I didn’t run this morning, because Lily had a seizure around the time I would have been a mile or two into my run. They actually aren’t a big deal or anything, she only has them every once in a while and they never last longer than a few minutes, but she always gets kinda freaked out when they happen, so I like to be there to hold her until it’s over and then sit with her and pet her while she recovers. And that never takes very long. About 20 minutes later I ended up taking her for a nice 2 mile walk.

After our walk I did a little bit of cleaning. Just a little bit though, the Royal Rumble is on tomorrow and the boys are planning on making a bunch of food for that, so I didn’t bother doing much. Haha I don’t know if anyone else has the problem, but every time a man cooks in my kitchen, he leaves it an absolute wreck. πŸ˜‰ Anyways, then I let Bruce out so he could run around and wreak havoc for a while, fed the bunnies, and made a bunch of ground beef (seasoned with taco seasoning) and brussle sprouts for lunch. 

I swear there are more brussle sprouts under the meat.


Oh man did I need that! I stared feeling a little better almost immediately, I’m in going to assume my guess about lacking protein/iron was correct. Good thing too, because that’s easy enough to fix. 😁

Later in the afternoon Luke and I finally took down the Christmas lights! Luke’s been saying he was going to do that for a month now haha (he wouldn’t let me get on the roof to do it. Something about me being a klutz and didn’t want me falling off the roof. πŸ™„), and once we were done with that we cleaned the garage. Oh man, that was an ordeal, but it needed done. Plus it looks a lot better out there now.
