Thursday Things

Hi, my name is Ashley and I’m a little bit obsessed with a band called Green Day. But we all already knew that, right? 😉

This is relevant, I swear!!

Tuesday (May 15th) was the 9th anniversary of the release of 21st Century Breakdown. That is just absolutely crazy!! This album (along with Hollywood Undead’s Swan Songs) was basically the soundtrack to my junior and senior years of high school. So today I wanted to share with you the story of what I did the day 21st Century Breakdown came out 9 years ago. It’s not a long or a particularly exciting story, but it is kind of ridiculous! And if I could go back, I’d totally do it again!!

img_1685

So, May 15th, 2009. It was the end of my junior year of high school and the day Green Day’s much anticipated follow up to American Idiot came out. I couldn’t tell you what day of the week it was (although I’m sure I could figure it out after a few minutes of googling haha), but I knew I totally wasn’t going to school that day! You see Green Day was (and still is) my favorite. At that point everyone knew it. And I was just as intrigued, interested, and excited to see how the hell they were going to follow up the masterpiece that is American Idiot. I’m pretty sure I hadn’t shut up about it since we knew that they had started recording a new album. Haha some things never change…

Anyway, I have no idea how this happened. I don’t remember even asking, but on that day my mom let me skip school so we could go to the mall and buy the CD at Hot Topic. Which was insane! I had already pre-orderd the album on Itunes with a gift card I had, but now I had a chance to get a physical copy on the day it came out?! There was no way I was gonna pass up on that! So after my sisters took our younger brother to grade school and then went to high school themselves, my mom and I went to the mall. So just a little side note, I had to get the CD at Hot Topic because at Hot Topic you got a free t-shirt when you bough the CD, and obviously I needed that free shirt! 😉

So yeah, other than that the day was relatively uneventful. I got the CD and the free shirt, then spent the rest of the day listening to the album on repeat. After that day that CD ended up living in Luke’s old, shitty Beretta because my old, shitty Saturn didn’t have a CD player haha. And we always listened to either 21st Century Breakdown or Swan Songs while we did little shithead teenager things. And that’s the story of the time I skipped school because of Green Day.

And continuing in the spirit of Throwback Thursday, here’s a photo of me from around that time period. I had to have been 17 or 18 in this photo. I thought I was such hot shit back then haha. And note all of that 21st Century Breakdown artwork on my wall. I do kinda miss having all sorts of neat stuff on my wall like that. 😉

img_1751

So in celebration of the album that was often playing in the background of my late teenage years, I had to listen to it during my run today. Haha for as much as I listened to it back in high school, it’s been a while since I’ve listened to 21st Century Breakdown all the way through. I got a little bit too excited, went out too fast, and was absolutely dead at 3 miles. So I stopped right about then and went to work in the garden.

Luckily I didn’t have to do too much work in the garden today. Mostly just did some watering and weeding. But everything is looking really good out there! The warm sunny day’s we’ve been having are making my tomatoes grow like crazy, which is awesome! And my peach tree is covered in little tiny peaches! I’m really hoping that this is the year we actually get a few to grow big enough to get ripe! We’ve had this tree for going on 3 years now and we’ve yet to get a single peach from it!

But anyway, summer running is hard. The heat and humidity do me in every time. It’s not fun but I know struggling through it makes me a better runner and will make me stronger in the fall. That being said, I believe I’m done with races until the fall. Running With The Cows was a lot of fun, and I got really close to my goal, but the humidity that day was awful and I felt pretty terrible for a few days afterwards. So my goal for this summer, just like every summer, is just to survive haha. Oh man I’m already ready for fall!

And last but not least for today, I’ve got another coupon code for StrideBox!! Yay!

You can use the code ASHLEY10OFF at checkout to get $10 off of one box. The code is only good through May 31st, so if you were looking to give StrideBox a try now might be a good chance to go for it! But that code doesn’t last long, so you’ll have to do it fast! 🙂

img_0205

Now for the sake of all transparency, I am a StrideBox ambassador and I get my StrideBoxes for free. But I only ever represent brands and company’s that I actually use and love, and I really do love StrideBox. Getting a box full of fun running goodies once a month is pretty freaking awesome! And I’ve never been disappointed in what came in a box. There’s always stuff in there that I could use or have wanted to try. And don’t even get me started on the yummy snacks!! 🙂

img_1517

I hope that didn’t sound too much like an ad. I’m not exactly trying to sell you guys stuff. It’s more like I’m recommending things that I like, and if I have a code or know of a sale that I can share, then heck yes I’m gonna share it for anyone who may be interested in it after hearing me talking about it!! Or at least, that’s what I’m trying to go for anyway. 😉

Anyways, that’s all for today!

Until next time,

~Ashley

Friday Fives: Songs I Like To Sing Loudly And Badly When No One Is Around

Guys! Jeez!! Why haven’t I done a Friday Fives in about 8 billion years?!?!?

Ok, maybe it hasn’t been 8 billion years, but it’s been a while and that’s kinda no fun. Sometimes coming up with topics, or 5 different things I want to talk about can be hard, but I still enjoy doing this posts. Especially since I like to keep it super broad, instead of just limited myself to “Friday Favorites” like a lot of other people like to do. Haha it gives me a little more wiggle room to talk about pretty much anything I want. 😉 I like to ramble about random things, if you haven’t noticed. Haha but that’s more exciting than only talking about running all the time. Or at least I think so.

Anyways, instead of running I wanted to talk about another one of my favorite subjects; music!! Specifically, songs that I like to sing loudly and badly to myself. I know there’s no way I’m the only one who likes to do this!!! I mean, sometimes when I’m home alone I just can’t help but belt out some of my favorite songs. And really the only reason that it’s bad is because I have absolutely no talent for singing whatsoever. 😂 But dammit if I don’t enjoy doing it!!

So, here are 5 songs that I just can’t help singing along to, loudly and badly, when no one is around. Sometimes awful dance moves may or may not accompany this little hobby of mine. But that’s something that’s gonna stay between me, myself, and I. 😉

1. Saturday Night –  Misfits

OOOOOOOO OOOOOO Whoaaaaaaoooooooooo noooooooo oooooooooh THERE’S 52 WAYS TO MURDER ANYONE, ONE OR TWO ARE THE SAME, AND THEY BOTH WORK AS WELL. I’M COMING CLEAN FOR AMY, JULIE DOESN’T SCREAM AS WELL……I WAS THINKING ABOUT YOU, THERE WAS SOMETHING I FORGOT TO SAY, I WAS CRYING ON A SATURDAY NIGHT…….

I desperately want to put this song on one of my running playlists, but I don’t trust myself…the second those oooooo’s start I can’t help but sing along. And I’m not entirely sure that this is a good song to be belting out in public. I don’t think all of the very friendly, but a little bit older, and kinda old fashioned people who live in my neighborhood would appreciate me yelling “there’s 52 ways to murder anyone” or “now I’m watching, watching you die”. Especially the ladies at the Baptist church that I often run by. I get disproving looks from them sometimes. My guess is it’s the tattoo’s, facial piercing, and dyed hair. So I’m thinking they wouldn’t appreciate this song….

(I feel like I need to mention that I’m actually on really friendly terms with a lot of the people I see on a regular basis when I’m out running/walking dogs/whatever. A good majority of the people I live near really are older and kind of old fashioned (I live in a small town in a kinda rural part of Kansas, so that’s unsurprising), but they’re all super nice and I enjoy talking to a lot of them. I just don’t think they’d appreciate the Misfits like I do hahaha.)

2. Sugar We’re Going Down – Fall Out Boy

I was 14 years old when this song came out. Jeez Louise I can’t believe this song is so old… Do you guys remember back in the day when punk/pop punk/emo/that basic genre was super cool. Everyone loved it and was super into everything that went with it. Like, everyone I went to grade school with wore skateboard shoes (guilty! I has a sweet pair of Etnies.). Safety pins. So many safety pins. Every girl had a crush on Billie Joe Armstrong, Brendon Urie, Pete Wentz, and that dude from Sum 41. We all watched Jackass and every guy wanted to be Johnny Knoxville or Bam Margera. We all argued about who’s music tastes were better and adamantly denied that we liked country music (even though we were all brought up on it). We brought our GameBoys and Pokemon cards to school (my class actually got all of that banned from my school hahaha) and battled/traded Pokemon at recess. Our school had skate nights at a local roller rink where we all showed off our sick roller blade moves, played wipe out and did the Cha Cha Slide, and ate frozen pickle juice (it was a thing at this roller rink!). We all thought we were a bunch of bad ass 8th graders, but really we were just a bunch of Midwestern kids who went to a private, Lutheran school in Illinois and didn’t know shit about the world. Those were the days…

So yeah, this song brings out the 14 year old girl in me, and I love it. Also, I like to think that my 14 year old self would think that me now at 26 is pretty freaking cool. 😉

3. Come On Eileen – Dexys Midnight Runners

How can you now?!?!? That’s literally all I’ve got for this one. How can you not?!? Such a good song. 🙂

4. She’s Out Of Her Mind – Blink-182

Fun fact; I’ve literally never listened to an entire Blink -182 album. Actually, as a general rule, I don’t exactly like Blink-182. Now, you might be wondering “But Ashley, doesn’t Blink-182 sound a lot like Green Day??”. Yeah, I guess, kinda. And that’s kinda part of my problem with them. Mostly it’s just that I’ve seen a few interviews with Tom Delonge and I don’t know man, there’s just something about him that I find ridiculously off putting. I don’t know, I’m just not a fan…

That being said, I listen to quite a few Blink-182 songs for someone who doesn’t exactly like them haha. And when there new album came out in 2016 I found this song and was pretty much hooked. Now I can’t stop listening to it. It gets stuck in my head all the time. I find myself singing it a lot. I’m not supposed to like Blink-182! Send help!!! 😉

(I know that my bias against them is kind of unfair and a little bit ridiculous, but dammit there’s just something about this band that I absolutely hate and I’ve yet to take the time to figure out what)

5. Oh Sherry -Steve Perry

*lots of dramatic arm flailing* OH SHERRY OUR LOVE HOOOOOLDS ON HOOOOOLDS ON!!!

Haha I find most 80’s music to be super cliche and over dramatic. But that’s what makes it so much fun right? 😉 But seriously, how can you hear the refrain of this song and not want to sing along? Because I find it to be very necessary hahah.

Ok seriously though, I know I can’t be the only one who does stuff like this. What songs do you absolutely have to sing along to when you’re alone??

Friday Fives: Current Favorite Running Songs

It’s been a while since I’ve talked music, which is kinda crazy because it’s one of my all time favorite things to talk about haha. Anyways, I do most of my running with music because I think it makes running more enjoyable. I know there’s like, a whole debate about whether or not you should run with music and that some people take a really hard stance on one side or the other, but obviously I’m not one of those people. 😉 Can I run without music? Absolutely! I even opt to do it sometimes!! But I do most of my running with music because I think it’s more fun. So here are 5 of my current favorite songs to run to!

1. If There Was Ever A Time – Armstrongs

Ok but for real, if Tim Armstrong (from Rancid) and Billie Joe Armstrong (from Green Day) could just do a whole album together, that’d be great! That’s probably not going to happen though. Sad face…haha but at least we have this song. I love it. And I think anything by Rancid or Green Day is great to run to, and this song is no exception. 🙂

2. The Sky Is A Neighborhood – Foo Fighters

Holy cow! This song! This song is AMAZING!!!

Not gonna lie, I’ve never been a huge fan of the Foo Fighters. I mean, I’ve never disliked them or anything, but I’ve always just kinda been “meh” about them. I think this song has kinda changed my mind though. Every time I listen to it I tell myself I need to listen to the whole album all the way through and maybe one day I actually will! Anyway, I really like the place this song takes me whenever I run. It’s like a dreamy rhythm zone thing and it’s great!

3. Fabuless – Stone Sour

I’ve been listening to this song a lot ever since Luke and I saw Stone Sour in September. Actually, I’ve been listening to several Stone Sour songs since Luke and I saw them. But I think this one is my favorite! I especially like it for running because it’s nice and angry  haha. Angry songs are pretty fun to run to, in my opinion. Especially for intervals or hill work.

4. Police On My Back – The Clash

This is one of my all time favorite running songs!! I think the rhythm is perfect for running and it’s a lot of fun to sing along to. Plus I mean, it’s The Clash! What’s not to like?!?!

5. Somewhere Now – Green Day

This song instantly became one of my favorites the first time I listened to it last October. And holy cow can we just talk about how crazy it is that Revolution Radio came out a year ago?! Anyway, I listen to this whole album a whole lot during the time I spend running and I tend to repeat Somewhere now once or twice because I just love it so much haha.

So there you have it! 5 of my current favorite running songs! What are some of you’re favorite songs to run to? I’m always looking for new to me music, so I’d absolutely love to hear what you like to listen to!!!

Anyways, that’s all for this Friday Fives. I hope you have a fantastic Friday!

Halloween Playlist 2017

It’s that time of year again!!! Time to break out my Halloween playlist!

So if you’ve been following my blog for a while, you probably know I take my running playlists very seriously. 😉 But to be honest with you, I haven’t really been making very many playlists for running lately. I’ve been in a very “I have to listen to the WHOLE album” kinda mood for a while now. And if I don’t feel like doing that, I just find a playlist on the RockMyRun app that seems intriguing and listen to that. But there are two times during the year that I absolutely have to make my own playlists; the beginning of spring and Halloween season! Haha and in my opinion, the Halloween season starts in September and I may or may not have been listening to this playlist since then. 😉 But hey, if the Christmas season can basically start in November I feel like Halloween can have two whole months too!

So my Halloween playlist is pretty much the same thing every year, I just keep adding new songs to it. But that totally works for me! I mean, I only listen to this playlist for a two-ish months every year so I don’t exactly get bored with it and I like super long playlists so I can just shuffle it and it will end up being different every time.

So yeah, here’s my Halloween playlist for 2017! 🙂

Friday Fives: Things I’m Super Into Right Now

1. Zensah FeatherWeight Compression Leg Sleeves

Ok so not gonna lie, I’ve only worn these things a few times now, but I already love them! Zensah sure wasn’t kidding, they really are feather light! They also provide a good amount of compression without feeling too tight or uncomfortable like other pairs of compression socks (this is my first pair of sleeves haha) have made me feel. Oh and the bra is pretty nice too. 🙂

img_6502

2. Sleepy Time Tea

This stuff is a life saver! I am very bad at falling asleep, and I’ve experimented with a few things over the years, but this stuff works the best for me! The herbs in this tea calm me down, make me relax, and help me fall asleep a little bit faster. 🙂

3. Steel Panther

Oh my gosh I’m so in love with this band! Haha Luke have just been recently getting into them, but we saw them play before Stone Sour on Tuesday and it was amazing! Seriously, go check them out. They are fucking great.

4. Bob’s Burgers

Luke and I recently started using Hulu because Netfilx alone just wasn’t cutting it hahaha (we don’t have cable). So yeah, I’ve been watching a lot of Bob’s Burgers since we started using it and it’s been great. I don’t care what anyone says, this show is great and I’ve been very much enjoying watching an episode while drinking my coffee every morning. 😉

5. Oatmeal

Oatmeal used to be one of my all time favorite foods. Like, it was one of my go to foods and I could eat it for every meal of the day. But then I kinda fell off of the healthy eating bandwagon for a while, but now that I’m getting back into it I’m really loving oatmeal again. Right now my favorite it oatmeal topped with bananas and walnuts. Yum! So good!! 🙂

Cherry Bombs, Steel Panther, And Stone Sour Live at the Midland in Kansas City, 9/26/2017

Oh man, this show! This show was….something. And I mean that in a really really good way!

So last week I got an email from the app I used to by Green Day tickets on earlier this year, about bands that were going to be playing in the area. I saw that Stone Sour was going to be playing at The Midland in Kansas City, so I mentioned it to Luke, since Stone Sour is his favorite band and because it’s been a while since they’ve been here, and the last time they were we had a chance to go, but Luke passed up on it! But after I told him he said he wasn’t sure if he wanted to go, because live shows just don’t seem all that exciting to him.

I guess he got curious about it though, because the next day he looked up ticket prices, saw that Steel Panther (a band that we’ve both been very into lately) was opening for them, and that sold him on going. Well, that and the fact that he figured out that he could get pretty sweet seats for pretty cheap! 😉 So long story short, that’s how we ended up going to this show. 🙂

img_6571

So yesterday was the day of the show! Yay! The nice thing about finding out about this show a week beforehand was that we didn’t have to wait very long for it haha.

After Luke got off of work yesterday he drove home, changed and got me, we stopped at Sonic for dinner, and then drove 40 minutes to Kansas City. And I just need to say, the roads in KC are super weird and don’t make a lot of sense. Luke and I also think downtown Saint Louis is much more exciting than downtown KC, but I think we might be a little bit biased, considering we’re originally from the STL area 😉

Anyway, so we got into KC and had to drive around for a little bit to find a parking garage. Funnily enough, we accidentally ended up in the same garage that we parked in for the Green Day concert. It was a little bit farther away from the venue we were going to that night than a few other garages, but it was also less crowded. So we parked, walked two blocks to The Midland, and got in line at around 5:50 pm which was 10 minutes before the doors were supposed to open, and then we waited. 6:00 pm rolled around, the line was getting pretty long, and the doors sill weren’t open. 5 minutes went by and still nothing. And then 10. By then people were getting a little bit antsy. But finally they opened the doors 15 minutes late and everyone started filing in.

Luke and I had seat tickets in the balcony, so we didn’t have to rush in to get a good spot in the pit which was nice. Haha we’re not exactly pit people. It can get a little bit rowdy in there and by the end of the night we were really glad that we weren’t involved with all of that. Anyway, we went up to the balcony, bought some drinks, found our seats, and settled in to wait for the show to start.

img_6680

The Cherry Bombs were the first act of the show and neither Luke or I had ever heard of them before. We both just kind of assumed that they were just some new band or something. But since we had some time to kill I looked them up and we were very wrong. Turns out they’re a group of professional dancers, aerialists, fire artists, hoopers, pole dancers, and singers. And boy were they awesome! Haha that was definitely an interesting was to start off a show! I didn’t get any photos of them, unfortunately.

img_6670

After Cherry Bombs performance Steel Panther came on stage to a crowed who was very ready to rock! If you don’t know who Steel Panther is, they’re a comedic band that basically makes fun of everything 80’s glam rock, metal, and pretty much anyone who takes themselves too seriously. Oh and they’re actually really fucking good. Like, aside from being hilarious, they can actually sing and play their instruments and its great! Luke and I were super stoked to see them play live, because we’ve been watching them a lot on YouTube lately, so it was pretty awesome to actually experience them for ourselves!

So for the most part it seems like opening bands only get to play a half an hour-ish set before the main act comes out, but they got to play for an hour and it was sooo much fun! Haha so it turns out Cory Taylor (the lead singer of Stone Sour) is a huge Steel Panther fan and has been supporting them since their first album. So that’s probably why they got a little more time, but everyone there was very into it. 🙂 And I mean, how could you not be? They have some very lewd/sexual/drug filled lyrics, they told some really funny stories, and pulled a bunch of girls up on stage and several of them flashed the crowd. Like I said, it was a lot of fun. 🙂

Luke and I decided that the place really filled during and right after Steel Panther’s set. I’ve never really understood why so many people don’t show up for the opening band, but the people who did last night missed out on a great time! But anyway, by the time Stone Sour came out the pit was packed and the balcony where we were sitting was pretty full as well. Honestly I was surprised that the show didn’t sell out, this was a pretty small venue, and small shows usually sell out really fast, but apparently Stone Sour isn’t as big of a band as I thought they were. Apparently Slipknot (Cory Taylor’s other band) is much more well known than Stone Sour is and I was just unaware of that until Luke told me last night. Haha but in my defense, this isn’t exactly the type of music I’m really into or follow, so I really don’t know much about it. 😉

img_6701

Anyway, once most of the band made their way out onto stage the crowed went wild, Corey Taylor ran out last, but once he did, everyone lost their damn minds haha. But I mean, he is a very impressive singer, song writer, and front man, so I guess it was no surprise that people were excited to see him!

img_6710

So like I said, this isn’t the type of music or a band that I really pay a lot of attention to, so I’m not gonna go into a detailed song-by-song thing like I did for Green Day. Mostly because I didn’t know all of the songs hahaha. And there were a few songs that I knew, but didn’t know the names of. 😉 It’s all good though. It was still a great time! Stone Sour is great live! They were energetic, had a good stage presence, and looked like they were having a great time too! Corey Taylor shot a confetti canon several times, threw lots of water bottles into the crowd, almost got into the pit at one point (his security guard didn’t look too happy about that), and encouraged people to sing along, not take themselves too seriously, and kinda egged the pit on when it started getting really rowdy.

img_6712

And oh boy did the pit get rowdy! It took them a little bit to get warmed up, but eventually they were all getting very much into it. It was very interesting to actually see people pushing and shoving each other (and I’m pretty sure they’re were some punches thrown to), but then pick each other up when they fell down. Haha and I mean, I have been in a semi rowdy pit before, but I’ve never got to witness it from above.

Anyway, they played a few older songs, and some songs that Cory Taylor said they hadn’t played in a long time. But like I said, I wouldn’t really know haha. But Luke seemed pretty impressed with their set list and was surprised about a few of the songs they played. 🙂 So they ended up playing for a little over 2 hours I think? So this was a super long show! But we still managed to get out of the venue, to the parking garage, in the car, and all the way home in a pretty decent amount of time. It was about 11:45 pm by the time we got home. Not bad! On the way home Luke said that he was physically and emotionally exhausted, and went on about how awesome it was that he got to see Corey Taylor in person, be in the same room as his favorite band, and how close we actually were to them. So yeah, now he understands how I felt about seeing Green Day. 😉

img_6717

Haha so we came home to some pretty pissed off dogs and cats. They get fed at 8 pm on the dot every night, but every once in a while whenever we do things like this, we just wait to do that until we get home and they hate it. Oh well, they got over it. 😉 And yeah, that was our night last night. It was great!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

And that’s all I’ve got for today, so happy hump day everyone!

~Ashley

img_6720

Yay! Exciting Things!!!

Little girl ferret still has no name (check out this post if you have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about 😉 ), but I’ve loved all of the suggestions so far! Keep them coming guys!! At some point Luke and I are gonna make a list and narrow it down from there.

Anyways, on Tuesday I found out that Stone Sour, which just so happens to be Luke’s favorite band, will be in Kansas City on the 26th. So obviously I told him about it. But he wasn’t sure about going because it’s on a Tuesday night and he has to be up pretty early the next day for work. But then on Thursday while he was at work he texted me, saying he had something important to talk about and that he’d been thinking about it for a while. Haha because you know, he has to be super dramatic about it instead of just coming right out and saying what he has to say. 😉 So I asked him what and he sent me a picture of he’s online receipt thingy for the tickets he bought.

img_6571

So that’s super duper exciting!! I mean, I like Stone Sour and all but they’re definitely not my favorite (we all know who my favorite is and we just saw them in August. You can read about that here and here. 🙂 🙂 🙂 ). I just love going to concerts! Plus I’m so freaking stoked for Luke! This will be the first time that he’s seen his favorite band live and I’m ridiculously happy for him!! Plus it looks like Steel Panther will be opening for them! If you don’t know who Steel Panther is, go look them up right now! They are fucking amazing!!! So yeah, it should be a pretty awesome show! Not as good as Green Day’s concert obviously, but I’m sure Luke will disagree with me. 😉

Yeah, I’m literally never going to get over how awesome my second experience of seeing Green Day live, in concert was, so here are some photos! For like, the 8th billion time! I CAN’T HELP IT THEY”RE MY FAVORITE!!! 😉

Anyways, I know a decent amount of Stone Sour songs, but I figured I should probably listen to their new album all the way through, since we are seeing them live and all. 😉 So, I did that yesterday morning and then again today while I picked up around the house and then while I used my stationary bike. 🙂

img_6595

Anyway, I probably definitely should have run this morning but I was up until around 1 am last night, ended up waking up late, and by then the sun was up and it was pretty hot/humid. Any you know me, I’m the biggest wimp in the world when it comes it the heat. 😉 Oh well, at least I biked for a little bit. And next week I’m going to make a point to work on getting back into my running routine and hopefully start working on building back up enough fitness to be able to run the Longview half marathon in November! Well, that’s assuming that my knee is even healed enough for that, but it’s been feeling pretty great so I think it just may be. 🙂

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got for today! Happy second day of fall! I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
