Fact: literally everything in St. Louis is better than anything in Kansas City.
Hahaha I’m only a little biased considering I’m originally from the STL area, but it’s still true. 😉
But since we’ve been living in the Kansas City area for almost 7 years now, we’ve learned to get by. 😉😉
Yesterday Luke wanted to take his brother and sister into KC yesterday to kinda show them around and do some stuff. Especially since his sister is leaving tomorrow and then his brother is going back home next week. So we went to the Kansas City Zoo and then the art museum.
Not gonna lie, growing up near St. Louis, which has one of the best zoos in the United States, might have ruined most other zoos for me and probably anyone else who ever got to go there on the regular for school field trips, birthday parties, or just on a regular weekend with your family. The St. Louis Zoo is AMAZING!
The Kansas City Zoo is, well… not so much. They don’t have nearly the amount of animals and there is a ridiculous amount of walking that you have to do that contains absolutely no exhibits. That’s no fun. Plus, the STL Zoo is free! Sure, the zoo parking costs like $20, but you can park anywhere else is Forest Park for free, which we always did. The KC Zoo is $16 a head. Which just makes me feel even worse about their whole situation. 😂
Hahaha so I know I’ve complained a lot, but we did have a pretty decent day yesterday. I’ve just always got to tell people how much better the STL Zoo is compared to the KC zoo.
Anyway, we woke up at 7 am yesterday so we could get everyone ready and get to the zoo relatively early. It opens at 8 am and we got there a little before 9 which worked out pretty well because we got into the zoo super fast since there was no line! Nice!!
One of the first exhibits you see entering into the KC zoo are the sea otters! I love them! They are just so cute!! This one was swimming all around and playing with it’s pink dish which was fun to watch!
The next exhibit and probably one of the most popular is the Polar Bear habitat, but he wasn’t out at that point, so we continued onto see some monkeys, birds, the orangutans, and orange panda, and the tigers.
After walking around for a while and seeing all of those animals we stopped in the little kiddy area to feed the goats! None of us cared that that was a little kid thing, we all had fun petting and feeding the goats!
And Obviously the goats knew where the little food dispensers were, so the bigger ones would climb up on the fence and get as close as possible to it while you collected the goat treats. It was pretty funny!
We moved on from the goats to the “Discovery Barn”. Another little kid area, but there are tortoise, meerkats, and Macaw parrots there and we wanted to see them. 😉 After we did we went to pet some stingrays! That’s always fun! Plus getting to stick your hand in cool water was super nice! Especially since it was starting to get pretty hot at that point.
After the stingrays we moved on the the penguins. One of our all time favorites! And also probably the second biggest attraction at the KC zoo. And I do have to admit that their penguin exhibit is pretty cool! It’s two different levels so you can see the penguins on “land” but then you can also watch them dive into and swim through the water. And a lot of times it looks like they’re swimming right above you which is awesome!
Plus this building is super cold (I mean, it kinda has to be) so it’s a nice place to stop and take a break from the heat.
After the penguins we moved onto “Africa”. Now this is the part of the zoo that has the ridiculously long walk with no animals. You even have to cross over a bridge that goes over a river and train tracks. Hahaha every time we do this Luke and I end up complaining about how poorly this zoo is set up. 😂 And I mean, you can take a tram over this part, but we already paid $16 dollars to get in, plus a ridiculous amount of money for food and drinks, plus we wanted to ride the ski lift thing, so we’re just not about that tram life. 😂
At this point is when we got to see the elephants which I was super excited about! Elephants are definitely one of my favorites! They are such intelligent, amazing, beautiful creatures! Plus if what that rumor circulating the internet is true, elephants think we’re cute (the same part of their brain lights up when the see us as the part of our braid does when it sees cute puppies or something like that, supposedly). And I just think that’s awesome!
After the elephants we road the sky tram thing. Basically it’s just a ski lift that goes over the ostriches, zebras, giraffes, and other herd animals so you can see them from above. I don’t have any pictures from that because I was terrified of dropping my phone. 😂 But my sister in law and I road it together and we had a lot of fun! 😃
Once we got off of the sky tram we walked aback around so we could get an on the ground view of all of the animals we saw from above.
And then yet again we made it to another portion of the zoo that had a ridiculous amount of walking with no animals in it. Boring…Hahaha we also spent $20 on a very small amount of snacks. That was a little bit depressing.
But we ate and drank as we walked. By this point the 4 of us were hot and tired, but we wanted to see the gorillas before we left and we actually got really lucky because two of them were right up near the glass of the viewing area.
Then we got really lucky again and got to see the leopard walking across the part of his habitat that goes over the waking path. That was super neat!! Luke and I have been to this zoo quite a few time actually, but this was the first time we ever got to see that!
Like I said, at this point we were all hot and tired so we started making our way to the exit. After the ridiculously long walk back from “Africa”, over the bridge with no animals we were all a little bit miserable. So we stopped at the penguin exhibit again so we could cool off in the air conditioning a little bit. Then when we left there we found a snow-cone truck and we all absolutely NEEDED a snow-cone, so we spent another $20 on 4 small snow-cones. That was a little bit ridiculous, but I wasn’t kidding when I said we needed them. We ate them while we walked out of the zoo and to the truck and we all perked up quite a bit after getting some icy, sugary goodness into us. 😂
That was probably the perfect way to wrap up our zoo trip.
It was around 12:30 pm that we left the zoo, so we went from there to the art museum.
We walked in, went to look at all of the paintings, and then Luke and his brother ran off because they are boring and don’t enjoy art. 😂😉 So my sister in law and I took our time looking at everything. She particularly liked the paintings since she’s a painter herself. I loved the Egyptian and Greek art. They have some pretty cool sculptures there. Plus a real mummy!! I also like all of the pottery stuff they have. I particularly like all of the teapots. 😁
So we went around the whole museum and apparently while we did that so did Luke and his brother. Ironically they ended up going through the whole museum as well and did actually look at the art while also looking for us. It was pretty funny actually. And once my sister in law and I finally spotted them the tried to get away again. But I took off running across the museum lobby because I don’t give a single fuck and I caught them. I got some weird looks from all of the fancy, sophisticated people there. It was hilarious. 😂
That was the end of our art museum adventure though, Which was probably a good thing. I don’t think the security people were too fond of us at that point, considering I sprinted across their lobby. Hahaha plus my sister in law and I got yelled at for standing too close to a Van Gogh painting. We weren’t touching! Just admiring! But apparently you can only get so close to the art. 🤷🏻♀️
Our day of adventuring ended at a Panera at around 3:30 that afternoon for a super later/early lunch/dinner. We were STARVING after waking around the zoo and only eating snacks. So it was basically the best meal we’d ever had. 😂
Then we drove back home and just kinda hung out for the rest of the evening. My sister in law showed me a bunch of her art on her phone and I showed her some of my photography stuff from back in the day. It was a nice evening after a fun but long day. 😊
So, I didn’t get a run in yesterday, but after all of the waking at the zoo I did go a little over my step goal, so I mean, I’ll take it! Hahaha at the very least walking around in the hot sun was definitely something! 😂 But I have been doing better at actually squeezing runs in this week compared to the 3 previous weeks, so I am making some progress on that front! We’ve definitely had a fun and eventful summer, but I’m ready to get back to that running grind! And I’m definitely getting there! 🏃🏻♀️😄
Anyway, I just wanted to share the fun day we had yesterday. Even though the St. Louis Zoo is better than the Kansas City Zoo. 😉
