A good friend of mine from high school committed suicide yesterday.

Honestly that’s hit me harder than I thought it would. We had grown apart since high school and hadn’t actually talked outside of Facebook for a few years, but back in the day we were pretty close. Me, Luke, him, and his girlfriend at the time (who I’m still friends with), were all very close and spent pretty much every weekend together. We had a lot of fun getting into trouble with each other. And honestly I still can’t wrap my mind around the fact that the goofy, kind hearted kid that I knew back then is gone.

And please don’t get me wrong, I’m not looking for sympathy here. Honestly, I don’t want it. I guess I just want to remind everyone that depression and mental illness are a serious thing and shouldn’t be written off as no big deal. My friend was a great guy and it hurts me to know that he was hurting so bad. My heart goes out to his family and other friends. We’re all going to miss him.

Talk to the people you care about. Tell the you love them and remind them of how awesome they are. Because one day it will be too late and everything that you left unsaid will come back to haunt you.

It is so important! And I think the stigma about not being “strong” enough or whatever is what prevents so many people, especially men, from talking about it or asking for help and that just sucks beyond words.
