Alright alright, I’ll be the very first to admit that unless you are at a race or other organized event, the activity that is running really doesn’t have any “rules”. That’s actually one of the reasons I really enjoy running. I like being able to do whatever I want, whenever I want, without anyone telling me what I can or cannot do, dammit!! 😉 I kinda get the feeling that that’s why a lot of people enjoy running, actually. It’s very freeing.
While heading out your front door and setting out to pound pavement doesn’t have any set rules, there are quite a few really strong suggestions from people who really know what they’re talking about, or things that you probably should do to become the best runner that you can be, or things that should be avoided for your own safety, but those just aren’t catchy enough for a title. 😉
1. I wear cotton.
That’s right, I commit the cardinal sin of donning cotton while I run!
Now give me a chance to explain! I hate the way moisture wicking material feels. Especially the really cheap, lower quality kind. *shudders* Ewww, that stuff is just awful…Although it’s not so bad whenever I’m sweating. Then I’m not as bothered by it, so in the summer I never wear cotton. Then it’s just waaay to uncomfortable.
But in the winter, I wear a lot of cotton. I have a purple long sleeved shirt that I usually wear as a base layer for my colder weather runs. I also wear a cotton hat, gloves, and jackets. Yeah, I don’t even care, I’d much rather be comfortable.
2. I hold my phone in my hand.
I actually thing a lot of people do this. I personally don’t think it’s that big of a deal, but I’ve heard that holding things in your had can mess with your form, and obviously it can be distracting. But I like being able to take pictures and mess with the volume of my music whenever I want.
3. I listen to my music way too loud.
This one is definitely more of a problem. I have a really bad habit of gradually turning my music up as I run, and then I end up listening to it at a volume that’s probably not safe. I’m gonna go ahead and try to justify it by saying that I don’t really run anywhere that’s super busy. Most of the time I’m in my neighborhood. I live in a super small town and I don’t usually venture onto the main road that goes through town, so I tend to feel kinda safe turning my music up.
I’ve never done this in the few times I’ve raced though. Then I had my music turned way down low, or I didn’t have it playing at all.
4. I don’t switch up the surface that I run on.
I’ve read this in pretty much every running book, magazine, and online article; running on different surfaces is good for your legs. I rarely ever run on anything but asphalt though, because I usually only run in my neighborhood or on a paved trail. I always say I’m going to try running on a track or a dirt trail, but running around in circles seems really boring, and starting my workout the second I step out my door is just so darn convenient. But hey, maybe one day I’ll get around to trying something different. 😉
5. I’ve never been properly fitted for a pair of shoes.
This is something else that I’ve read everywhere. The first thing most people suggest for new runners is to get fitted for the right pair of shoes. I’ve been running for around 4 years now, and I’ve never had my feet/stride assessed. Hell, I’ve only ever stepped into an actual running store twice, and the only reason I did those two times was to pick up race packets. 😉
Through a little bit of trial and error, I’ve figured out what kind of shoes work for me and I’m very happy with the shoes I currently wear. 🙂
