Tomorrow is the last day of the year and I can still hardly wrap my head around that. It seems like 2016 just started, but now here we are on the second to last day of December.
Yesterday I looked back on some of the fun things that happened in my life this year, so today I wanted to take a second to remember some of the fun running related things that happened as well.
Cows are my favorite animal, so when I heard about this race I knew I wanted to do it! Unfortunately I didn’t get to do it the year I found out about it, but the wait was totally worth it! The course was very rural and super scenic. I didn’t get to see as many cows as I would have hoped, I guess they were in other parts of the fields that day, but I did see some, and there was a calf at the starting line, and that was pretty neat!
After the race there was literally a huge feast! There were pancakes, cinnamon rolls, bagels, pizza, sandwiches from Chick Fil A, fruit, oatmeal, cereal, pasta, the list seriously goes on and on. I wasn’t all that hungry though, plus I only ran the 5k, so I only grabbed a bagel, banana, and chocolate milk. Maybe next time I’ll run the half marathon and then eat as much as humanly possible! 😉 Seriously, there was so much tasty looking food.
Surviving The Summer Heat Wave
So by now you probably know that I absolutely abhor anything and everything to do with the heat. I hate hate hate hate it. I am literally the biggest wimp when it comes to running in hot weather, and this year we had a pretty crazy heat wave…but I survived! I don’t think I actually improved on anything during the summer, but I ran consistently and once the cool weather finally graced me with it’s presences I immediately started improving. That definitely wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t stick with it over the summer.
Running In Colorado
Even though it was all done on a really crappy motel treadmill, running at elevation was definitely an interesting experience! Hopefully next time I visit Colorado I’ll be able to run some trails!
Half Marathon Training Round Two
This training cycle was definitely an interesting one! I kicked off my second round of half marathon training on July 24th with a rest day. Haha that’s always a great way to start a training plan, in my opinion.:) 16 weeks later I wrapped up this training cycle by crossing the finish line of a 13.1 race in 2:52:42, but I’ll get to that later.
Training has had it’s ups and downs, I suppose it always does, but this year definitely went better than when I was training for my first half last year. First and foremost, I already had a pretty good idea of what I was doing, since I have done this once before. Plus I was a lot more confident in myself this time around. And I wasn’t plagued with injuries this year. Last year I was having IT Band issues, my right hip was always sore/in pain, and my shin started giving my trouble at some point as well. This year I had a toe incident which had absolutely nothing to do with running, and I was back running at full force a week or so later. 🙂 So I’d say everything went a lot better this year!
Looking back I think I had a lot of fun training for my second half. Although if you were to ask during a few of those weeks I would have told you that I hate running and that I never wanted to do it again. But I suppose that’s the nature of the sport. 😉
Oh man, I still can’t get over how well this race went compared to last year! I ran a little over a minute faster! That’s just crazy!! Plus I felt a lot better through out the race and finished a little bit stronger. I’ve still got a lot of random thoughts about this race floating around in my head, and right now I’m finding it kind of difficult to organize them, so you can click on the link above to read the full race recap. It’s a little more well thought out there.
Anyway, not gonna lie, I kinda want to keep up this streak and do the Longview half next year haha. We shall see though, maybe I’ll find another fun half to do instead. 🙂
My goals for 2016 were as follows;
- Run 500 Miles
- 1 mile: 9:45
- 5k: 35
- 10k: 1:20:00
- Half Marathon: 2:59:00
Here’s how I did;
- 564.87 miles run in 2016 (unless I decide to run tomorrow, that is)
- 1 mile: 10:32
- 5k: 37:41
- 10k: 1:20:00
- Half Marathon: 2:52:42
So I didn’t quite hit all of my goals, but I’m quite happy with what I did! Once half marathon training started I really focused on my longer PR’s, and I kinda stopped trying to meet my mile and 5k goal. But I mean, I exceeded my yearly mile goal, hit my 10k goal right on the nose, and ran my second half marathon more than a minute per mile faster than I did last year! I think that’s pretty darn impressive and I’m very proud of myself!
