Long Run Ramblings

I’m in a rambling type of mood, and therefore, have a lot to say about today’s 5 miler. So buckle your seatbelts boy and girls, because this is probably going to be a wild ride! 😉

Alrighty then! Now that you’ve been warned, let’s start off with music since that’s usually the first thing I plan for longer runs.

Now I know a lot of people don’t particularly like listening to music while on the run, and I actually really get that! Sometimes all you need is the sound of your breathing and your feet hitting the pavement. But I listen to music on most of my runs.

Usually I like to make super long playlists and just put them on shuffle (check out my spring playlist here!) That way they’re a little bit different every time and I don’t get tired of them as fast. But I wasn’t feeling my playlist today and my fall back plan is always to turn on a Green Day album.

I don’t think I’ve really mentioned my love for Green Day here before. I’m a little bit of a fan girl…

Yup. Just a little bit. 😉

So without getting too far into my Fan girl-ness, Insomniac and Dos were the sound track to my run. Insomniac is one of my favorite albums ever and Dos is just a lot of fun, so that made for a good time. Plus I finished my run right in the middle of the last song on Dos, so that was kinda neat that those two albums alone were just long enough for me to get 5 miles in. 😁

Although I had a kickass playlist, this 5 miler didn’t go as well as last week’s. But it was rainy this morning so that was to be expected. I actually kinda like running in the rain, but after a while those wet clothes start to wear you down!

It wasn’t all that bad though. I had a lot of fun for the most part! I think proper fueling is really helping with that. I mean, I usually eat a good breakfast before I run. But I’ve been experimenting with fueling on the run. Obviously I don’t actually need to eat anything during a 5 mile run, but a granola bar halfway in has been helping me finish the last half of my run a little bit stronger. At least I think it is. More experimenting needs to be done.

One of these days I’m going to learn how to eat while running. Today is not that day, though. I had to walk while I downed this bad boy.

This is actually something I really need to work on, and I think trying out new this while my long runs aren’t all that “long” is a really good idea. I did a horrible job with properly fueling for my first half marathon and I think it ended up hurting my performance. So I want to be a little more prepared and knowledgeable in this aspect so that next time is a little better.

I’m also working on post-run snacks. For the most part my stomach is pretty good about pretty much anything before a run, and it’s handled sport beans and fiber one bars really well while on the run, but afterwards it gets a little picky. Especially if the run was particularly difficult. Then I usually don’t feel like eating at all, but if I don’t I end up feeling really shitty for the rest of the day. I’ve recently discovered honey stinger waffles  and they’ve been working really well for me! Haha I really need to get me a box of them. And probably a box of sport beans too!

Went to Dick’s after my run and I couldn’t decide on one, so I got both! I kinda wish I would have had the sport beans during my run, but they’re good for after as well. 😄

So yeah, back to the actual running part of my run. Like I said before, last week’s 5 miler was better, but I anticipated that and I’m still definitely improving!

 5 miles is no where near as daunting as it used to be. Actually, even 10 doesn’t even seem so scary anymore. Obviously I’d have to work back up to that point, but I know I can do it. After training for, and then completing a half marathon in last November I’ve become much more mentally tough. I’ve found that even though most runs have really tough parts, if you stick with it and keep going it will eventually get better. 

My overall time and mile splits are nothing to write home about, and between the wind and wet/heavy clothes, negative splits just weren’t going to happen. But I’m still happy with how today went. I mean, we can’t PR every day. 😉

 

So…I guess that’s it! If you actually stuck with me through this whole post I sincerely thank you! I feel like this post is a little scattered/random, but sometimes you just need to get it all out there, ya know?

    Hey, I did 5 too (after work) and at pretty close to the same pace. I’d love to know what you think of the Sport Beans. I’m looking for some new half-marathon energizers and those were mentioned in a book I read recently, so I’ve been wanting to try them.

      Dude, I LOVE sport beans!! They’re super tasty, easy to eat (some energy snacks are kinda tough to chew…), and they really give you energy and pretty quickly too. I definitely recommend them. 😄

    First, awesome looking run! Second, as I’ve been hitting the 5-6 mile mark, I’m finding myself feeling droopy for the last mile or two. I’ve been wondering if it’s a sign that I need to start fueling during my run. I feel silly taking a snack, since it’s “only” 5 miles, but it takes me over an hour! I think I’m going to try it next weekend and see what happens!

      Thanks!! I feel kinda silly taking snacks on such “short” long runs as well, but I really think it’s making a big difference in my energy level during the last few miles.
